Attention Aussie Tumblr Peeps (all 20 of you):
Go watch Queerstralia on ABC iview! It's a three-part documentary about queer history in Australia.
We are often fed narratives from elsewhere in the world, so this is a great way to learn about our unique history. It's funny, entertaining, and doesn't sanitise anything.
I learnt HEAPS.
I was also super impressed about how it is both inclusive yet balanced. It frequently checks its own privelage and also acknowledges the hierarchies within the greater lgbtqi+ community. The white lesbian host (Zoë Coombs Marr - total legend) enlisted another interviewer to discuss first nations topics, and I was FLOORED by the bit above about racial fetishisation. I have never felt so seen on Australian TV before. There was even a whole bit leading up to this about gay Arabs. Like what??
Good on ya Aunty :)

Exclusive Interview: performance artist Krishna Istha on Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda Netflix special "I realized what I was doing was actually stand-up comedy"
London-based performance artist, writer, comedian, and theatre maker Krishna Istha first became interested in stand-up comedy when they saw Zoë Coombs Marr and Hannah Gadsby perform live. Seeing them in action “changed my perspective of what stand-up was and who it is for” recalls Istha, who is part of a lineup of seven genderqueer comedians—including Jes Tom and Mx. Dahlia Belle—in Hannah…

With the staging of the 45th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the fight for equality by the "78ers" — who staged the first march — has been well documented, but Queerstralia has dug much further back in time and explores the experiences of people across the country.
"There's so many interesting stories," says Coombs-Marr.
"Learning about lesbian convict games I found incredible.
"Australia was once known as the 'Sodom of the South Pacific'.
"We've got a gay bushranger, Captain Moonlight, and even before there was a word for transness, people we would now classify as trans were just living their lives, passing as the opposite sex, living out their genders in colonial times.
"Also, a lot of the First Nations' histories and perspectives that I've been lucky enough to be working on are really eye-opening. They're incredible histories and they just haven't been told."

[ID: Screenshots of a conversation between Todd Fernando and Zoë Coombs Marr, subtitled as follows:
How we conceive gender and sexuality today is an import of colonisation. So the evidence that has been passed down orally‚ you know, gives us a clear indication that Aboriginal sexualities were a thing. To unpack what that thing is is very personal and I think very intimate for Aboriginal people. And it’s intimate because it was stripped in such a violent way. Aboriginal forms of sexuality were eroded on this continent while colonial sexuality was evolving. There is evidence of practices of homosexuality, which anthropologists described as barbaric and disgusting and beastly. And that’s the laws coming through of England in, you know, being used as a weapon to describe savages. And so talking about sexuality and gender identity became a closed practice that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people do still to this day.

Todd Fernando, a queer-identified descendant of the Kalarie peoples of the Wiradjuri nation, has been Victoria's Commissioner for the LGBTIQ+ Communities since 2021. He holds a PhD in medical anthropology from the University of Melbourne.
Zoë Coombs Marr, an award-winning comedian and 'professional lesbian,' is the presenter of the Queerstralia documentary series.

It’s The Way I Tell ‘Em (35)
It’s the Edinburgh Fringe once more and time to air some of the (allegedly) best one-liners of 2024. My girlfriend told me she had never seen the film Gaslight. I told her: Yeah you have…we watched it together – Zoë Coombs Marr I recently read 10% of sheep are gay – turns out there’s nowt so queer as flock – Amy Mason My desire to spontaneously sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight is always just a…

Rhys Nicholson mourns twink death in new passport photo
Thoughts and prayers for Rhys Nicholson, who has bravely gone public to raise awareness about twink death, the condition that eventually comes for us all.
The Australian comedian, who used they/them pronouns, recently renewed their passport and on Instagram to share their two passport photos from years apart.
As well as bravely coming out as a US citizen in the post, Rhys also wrote, “Nothing like a new passport to officially announce to yourself you are not a Twink anymore, and haven’t been for quite some time.”
Drag queen Ivory Glaze replied, “Thoughts and prayers… you have now reached twas status.”
“Portrait of dorian GAY,” Etecetera Etcetera added.
“The lady on the right is actually wanted in Estonia for hacking,” another follower joked.
“Rachel Maddow looks different here,” another wrote.

Rhys Nicholson films Drag Race Down Under in Auckland
In a few months, Rhys Nicholson is returning to season four of the newly-titled Drag Race Down Under, now hosted by Michelle Visage on Stan.
The Australian comedian flies to Auckland each year to judge the Australasian version of the series.
Last year, Rhys recalled that hilariously, they were let on a plane to Australia out of Auckland airport without a passport.
Rhys shared the story on ABC’s The Weekly with Charlie Pickering last April.
“You wanna see a trusting country? Go to New Zealand,” the comedian explained.
“A couple of years ago, I was in Auckland airport to come home when I realised I’d lost my passport.
“I really needed to get on the flight, so I spoke to the guy at the desk, and he simply exclaimed, ‘No worries bro, let’s call Canberra’.
“He got on the phone, and he called Canberra, I guess? Chatted for a few minutes, and he hung up. God as my witness, he said, ‘Well, they said it’s up to us, so I reckon just go.’”

People may have mentioned these resources in the notes already, but here goes:
Zoë Coombes-Marr made a documentary series for the ABC earlier this year called Queerstralia. It's three episodes long, and even she says it's not comprehensive, but given there's nothing else like it out there, it's a good starting point!
The Australian Queer Archives has over 400,000 items of archive, library, museum and gallery material. They organise regular events, exhibitions, and they have a yearly conference.
If you're in Melbourne or Greater Victoria, I'm sure the folks from the Victorian Pride Centre would be happy to have a chat or point to other resources. It's home to organisations like LOTL (Lesbians on the Loose) Media and Alice's Garage, a project recording and empowering the lives of older LGBTQIA+ Australians.
Hello! I was wondering if you jave any resources or places i could lool for queer Australian history specifically? Thank you!
Thank you so much for asking; there are some amazing Australian queer history groups out there; I will say, though, that I haven’t done a huge amount of research into Australian Queer History specific projects, and I don’t feel super comfortable recommending any at this point as I don’t have much experience with most of them. Still, I am sure my fantastic followers will have some suggestions!
In terms of Australian people, we have written about:
Lesbia Harford
Ethel Pedley and Emmeline Wooley
Emmeline Freda Du Faur
Edward De Lacy Evans

Narrative is over-rated, she insists. “People go on about story – everyone loves story. ‘Storytelling – it’s how we understand ourselves.’ I think it’s a way of how people can understand some parts of ourselves, but I don’t think that it’s the be-all and end-all.
“Story gets too much airtime,” she says, then with a Judith Lucy-style inflection, adds: “Fuck story!”
Narrative, she says, is used to justify violence in entertainment and culture, such as the killing of women in theatre and opera, which the trio satirised to visceral effect in Oedipus Schmoedipus, along with audience opprobrium about decontextualised and therefore “gratuitous” violence.
“I think that’s far more offensive, to have violence and [murder] justified by a narrative that precedes it, rather than us just showing the thing that is unjustifiable.”
See Ich Nibber Dibber at the Malthouse if you’re in Melbourne. It’s on ‘til the 23rd. Link
I was in a shitty mood before I went. Nearly stayed home for a cry and a sulk and had to get an uber across town. I came out feeling so enlivened and happy. I’m not saying that experience will be universal. It was brilliant to see three chicks who really know how to put on a show just talk shit for an hour and make it enthralling theatre. But not the kind of enthralling you need 100% brain power for.
This is the kind of... avoidance of narrative and story-telling that you don’t see much, from women. Chat between women, written by women, outside the need of a plot to frame it. It was sharp and funny and original and a salve to my embittered heart.
Having a venue like the Malthouse and proper dramaturgy and sound and lighting gave reverence to the script. Post don’t let deconstructing theatrical convention get in the way of staging the show well. But the ambient music and simple visuals also do a lot to help it not be too much. The niggle you get when you hear something is on at the theatre and like... it’s gonna be a whole thing where you have to prep yourself mentally for engagement with high culture. You’re gonna have to know how to analyse stuff and have your thoughts and emotions spring-loaded.
You don’t have to prepare like that. Understanding theatre or theory has no bearing on enjoying this. It’s just fun. Go! And take a friend, because you will want to talk afterwards.
