Chapter 16 We Take A Zebra To Vegas
I wanted to do chapter illustrations of how I always imagined them in the book leading up to the live action premiere
(And then I will proceed to go nuts drawing the live action trio)

Okay, I don't usually time myself while drawing these pages, but one of my roommates informed me that I spent over 12 hours on just the first panel.
O_O;
So, anyway, background cameos include:
Some fairy beavers (John Dough and the Cherub), the Woozy (The Patchwork Girl of Oz), some Bunnyburians (The Emerald City of Oz), an ork (The Scarecrow of Oz), a kalidah (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), the zebra and the softshell crab (The Emerald City of Oz), a winged monkey (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), Professor Grunter Swyne (The Tin Woodman of Oz), Mickey Mouse (Plane Crazy by Ub Iwerks and some other guy), the siamese cat that Toto chases at the end of the 1939 MGM film, and some field mice (various Oz books).
The alligator, squirrel, king snake, and 7 birds aren't from anything.
If you like this comic, please support me on Patreon! (link in bio)

Devil May Cry Furry AU Pt 1: The Sparda Family
Part of my Devil May Roar series of images. All designs are okay to draw, so long as I'm credited and tagged.
When it comes to drawing Devil May Cry characters as furries, the popular species choices for the Sparda family tend to be carnivorous, especially as canids/felids are the default choice of animals people go to for furry character designs. I, however, am someone who prefers ungulates as my go-to choice of mammalian species.
While Sparda is still a demon, the mortal form he takes on is meant to resemble a red deer, as stags are depicted to be guardians/leaders of the forests. Though, his size and antlers makes him look more like the extinct Irish elk. Eva, meanwhile, is a horse (albeit one without a distinct breed); An animal both quaint and unassuming, yet majestic and prized. And it ties into the Sparda twins being...
Unicorns. A creature long sought after for their elusiveness and the power they hold. (Technically they're actually hippocerfs, but I needed an excuse to make them unicorns.) Them being half-deer ties isn't as important outside of explaining why they have horns, but the horse symbolism reigns (get it) even stronger here so I'll list off how they tie into Dante and Vergil.
Dante:
Travel. Horses are the oldest mode of transportation besides our own two feet, and combined with them being used in myths as passages to and from the underworld, they fit right in with Dante traversing through literal hell and back.
Humanity. Horses and humans have had a long link with each other that almost rivals dogs in terms of just how much love we give to these animals.
Vergil:
Power. Horses are often seen as a commanding animal that demand your attention, from a status symbol by the royal to a vehicle for soldiers in war.
Death and demons. Did you know that the "mare" part of "nightmare" used to be literal? There's also the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and more specifically Death with his pale horse
Going back to Vergil for a bit, let's look at V and Urizen specifically. V is technically a white horse, but the ink grafted onto them from the Nightmare demons they host gives them the appearance of a zebra.
Urizen makes it as obvious as possible that he's a stag through just how monstrous his antlers are. Not only are they representative of the Qilphoth tree he was desperate to seek, but they're also based on "monster" deer antlers that result from either hormonal imbalances or intentional breeding for deer hunting farms to create the ideal trophy. (Don't look that up if you're squeamish btw)
Now as for Nero, he (and by extension, his mother, the Lady in Red) is a roe deer. Though not the same species, he represents the side that his father Vergil most idolizes: The deer side, the demon side, Sparda.
Of course, Nero didn't know this even though he knew he stood out from the rest of his "herd", The Order of the Sword. This is also a reference to Bambi, who lives his life as an ordinary roe deer but eventually realizes that he's the son of the Old Prince. I'm talking about the original book, by the way; The Disney movie throws away half the story and turns Bambi from a European Jewish roe deer into an American whitetail deer of indeterminate religious status.

3 am thoughts on the pjo show. it’s good and i enjoy it. but i think it’s suffering from a certain.. hesitancy that the book didn’t have. i think it’s trying to take itself too seriously. one of the draws of the book is how unserious percy’s pov is except when it matters. he makes fun of everything because it’s Weird! it’s all crazy! but the show isn’t really committed to the wackiness of the universe.
i wanted grover bleating when he laughs and eating tin cans. annabeth arrogantly tossing her hair and casually sharpening her dagger. percy’s narrative snark and sarcasm translated into his dialogue. i wanted to see a flicker of real fire in ares’ eyes and soot on hephaestus’ beard. less expositional conversations and villain monologues and more banter and action scenes. more show less tell.
“sanitized” is the wrong word, but i feel like it’s been.. tamed in a way. and also they keep explaining the Themes and Motifs to us like middle schoolers are stupid. i think it’s the disneyification.
all this to say i really do enjoy the show and am besotted with the trio, esp grover. some things they do really well - i was actually scared of medusa and echidna! when the kids do banter, it’s funny! but other things just fall flat - why wasn’t there a zebra? why did we never see the kids eating any burgers at the diner when we know they were hungry? they’re teens and it’s burgers… cmon. little things like that. know what i mean?

yuusona/self insert Rory Queens
“Back home I was deemed a witch but, being here? Why, it’s incredible.”
Voice claim: Lyney-Genshin Impact
Character info
He’s typically pessimistic and sarcastic but he doesn’t mean to be. At least, not to everyone. It’s a defense mechanism for him in a way. When he was first transported to Twisted Wonderland he was pretty mean to a lot of the other students but over time his shell got cracked and he began to actually relax in the strange environment. Staying at Ramshackle before it got cleaned and fixed up caused his health issues to flare up so he more often than not would bunk at Heartslabyul.
He grew up in a strict household with many heavy expectations placed on him as the eldest sibling. Often times he would argue with his parents about what he wants for himself and his future but they only paid attention to the parts they wanted to hear. They were definitely not fans of his “witchy” hobbies. For a long time before coming to Twisted Wonderland he felt an immense feeling of loneliness, he was always around people. Very different types of people ranging from werewolves to vampires to regular humans. But, he never truly felt like he “belonged” so to speak. He was there, a shadow, and as far as he was concerned that’s all he ever would be. Until one very bad night happened and he awoke in a coffin.
Fun facts: The tarot card deck he brought with him was able to be enchanted so he can use them to cast spells. He joined the Pop Music club when Lilia saw him strumming a guitar that was left in the club room, Lilia insisted to hear him play more and soon enough he was a member. He misses his horse so if he’s not busy then he’ll stop by and help at the Equestrian club. He feels immense guilt for preferring Twisted Wonderland over his home world. Sometimes he feels a deep homesickness even though he never wants to return to his world.
Basic info
Age: 17
Height: 166cm, 5’5 (out of platforms)
B-day: June 29th (Cancer)
Dominant hand: Right
Family: Unnamed mother and father, 2 younger sisters, and a younger brother
Nickname: Zebra shark (Floyd)
1st year
Class A
Club: Mainly the Pop Music club but if he’s not too busy he likes stopping by the Equestrian club
Best subject: History
Hobbies: Drawing, creative writing, and studying different types of magic
Pet peeve: Struggling to ignore people who get under his skin
Favorite food: Sweets. He’s a fiend to Trey
Least favorite food: Anything sour
Talent: Observing his surroundings and others reactions
Character dynamics
Grim: Lil stinky guy. Seriously though Grim did get on his nerves at first but now they’re that one Rosa Diaz meme with the puppy.
Riddle: Princess and the Pauper frfr, besides Ace and Deuce, him and Rory became friends quickly after his overblot. It was Riddle who was able to help him get used to school life at NRC.
Cater: An unlikely friendship where they realized how similar they are. Cater helps him become more outgoing and Rory helps him with not hiding his real feelings.
Lilia: That duo that need to be separated. They can’t be left unattended or something bad is bound to happen. They share a lot of common interests and Rory loves hearing about his time as a general.
Vil: Mother hen with an ugly gosling. They first met after Rory had a Mental Breakdown and decided to chop his hair, Vil was not a fan. He fixed his hair himself and they formed an unlikely friendship.
Azul: They did not get along at first, like at all. With the events of Book 3 Rory assumed that he was an egotistical and selfish person but, following Book 4 he started seeing through the charade he puts up. Rory begs to see his merform one day.
No the formatting will never stay the same, it’s impossible for me to make things cohesive and he’s bound to change as time goes on
Edit: He did change as time went on

infodump about how you got into pjo please :)
okay so when i was younger than six i had absolutely no interest in reading. like. at all. i would fight to avoid reading. I wasn't dyslexic i just really couldn't and wouldn't do it.
But then, I got pretty sick-- influenza which kicked off respitory infections and pneumonia and lead to a kick off a bunch of autoimmune issues (which were never actually diagnosed but that's a whole 'nother thing) and anyway, I basically couldn't do anything from october to april. like, was barely in school and when I was, wasn't allowed to do recess or anything.
and I wasn't interested in the television at all, so my parents started telling me to read/write/draw a lot more.
And let me tell you, i've never been an artist. So I wrote a bit, but mainly, I started reading mid october, because my dad would get off work early and read harry potter with me. So he read the philosophers stone with me, and then I read the other six books by myself... in two weeks.
So that's when I started reading. Then, in second grade, I discovered percy Jackson-- and flew through the whole series. I got House of Hades the first day it was released, and kept up with the series for a while.
Genuinely, I just loved the disability portion of the series-- Thalia was my favorite character, since TLT because of this one scene in we ride a zebra to vegas.
Anyway, I was, what, 7 then? And so late second grade, I'd started watching youtube videos-- you know the fan edits with fan art and music in the background? I would annoy my brother by playing them on the youtube tab in the Wii, all afternoon while I would do my homework (or make him do it-- he was three years/grades younger-- so not even in school, but I would make him do my math homework)
anyway so those fan edits were really my introduction to fandom, and I don't know how, but I started reading fics on ffn around then as well. also started writing my own fanfiction. anyway, yeah. Then covid happened and i definitely got super reinterested in the series.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians Season 1 Review (2/3)
Part 1 • Part 3
What I dislike:
The action scenes are lacking. An example is Percy fighting Mrs Dodds: 1rst-Why did it happen in front of everyone? That makes not sense. Yes, the Mist hides stuff but if a woman attacks a teenager everyone will see it! 2nd- It was weirdly paced. Like one second Mrs Dodds was standing and the next she was dead. It took me a second to realize what happened. It was anticlimactic and Percy basically did nothing,he was just lucky Riptide opened up just in time to stop her. Another scene like that was the fight against Ares. To me it was "just fine" yet not epic. I feel it should be a little longer and I wish to see more of Ares using his battle tactics and powers, he is the God of War after all. Again, it is ok for what it is but it definitely could and should have been a bigger moment as a season finale, as Percy's moment to be a hero and prove himself, and as a demonstration of power level and difference between a mortal and a God! Also, it feels kinda insane that a guy with almost no training can defeat Ares so easy. That is a problem that stems from the lack of screen time at Camp in the first episodes, seeing Percy learning how to fight; sadly it backfired in the season finale. And you may say "well, these scenes include kids so is harder to make a bigger, more explosive, more incredible action scene than if they were adults" but it's possible. In House Of The Dragon a scene with five children fighting with only sand,a rock (that is not even used) and a dagger has way more tension than the God of War fighting our hero. The Minotaur scene was fine too. There are some changes like in the book Sally tried her best to distract it but because she is a normal human she could not do much, the whole taunting the Minotaur was Percy's stuff showing his bravery (I like the idea of Sally doing that to protect her baby tho,is cute) and Percy discovered in the process that he has inhuman agility and strength; so what they changed it's fine, my only complaint would be that the scene was super dark (all night scenes are) and it was hard to see what was going on,but I feel that at this point that is a Hollywood problem, so wathever
In the book,at the battle of Percy vs Ares,Kronos himself stops Ares from killing Perseus, but here it did not happen. That moment foreshadows Kronos interest in Percy because he wants to use him as a basel
Percy intelligence is heavily underused. In the books Percy constantly connects the dots and clues to figure out who people/monsters/Gods are; in addition to getting out of situations in creative and fun ways. Here there is none of that . An excellent example is the Lotus Casino. Book Percy figured out people there get trapped while he was talking with two boys who were not from this century. In the show Hermes just told him (which by the way, making Hermes own the place makes him an asshole who traps people for some reason, and as a Hermes fan it makes me angry).
While fighting Echidna, she do not have telekinesis powers or something, Percy is being chased by her chihuahua/Chimaera and he, of his own free will, decides to jump to the water showing his bravery and how willing he is to believe his dad has his back, and he is damn right! His father helped him and he learned that he can breathe underwater. All of these if missing
Percy did not speak even once with horses, that was the whole purpose of the Zebra, which also didn't appear in an episode titled "We Take A Zebra To Vegas"
The school acting like Percy is the son of Satan himself and that the best is for Sally to teach him from home. All of this because Percy drawing something so horrible,so despicable,so wicked ...a Pegasus(?) Like WTF! that the stupidest stuff I have ever seen. A kid drawing a Pegasus is not a sign of alarm,is a sign of being a kid, you fucking morons! Its imagination and creativity, and that's it,you are supposed to work with children, how can you be scared of that?! And if a kid is wondering around in the school's rooftop, that's on the school not the child. You supposed to be taking care of him, what is a kid doing there? That's your fault for being irresponsible!
They leaving Crusty free and happy, knowing he is a serial killer, wtf! All that scene was really weird in general. Percy just walked into the store without explaining how and when they found that place, how they know the Underworld is there, and they already knew everything about the store and Crusty,it felt unnatural and unearn. And in the book Crusty doesn't guard the doors to the Underworld, because why the Gods would leave that job to a guy like that? That's Charon's job
Lotus Casino (refering to the inside, the outside is really cool) was kinda boring, and they were trapped there and not go intentionally. It is tempting for children, that is why there are games for them to play. There is a waterslide, an indoor bungee jumping bridge, hundred of videogames. Here almost everything is just gambling and I know it is a casino but in the book is cooler. And there is VR games too, and that's it.
Charon, in both the books and any myth ever, would let you pass if you give him coins,so why did they change that and make him have control over Cerberus? Is a strange decision
The Underworld is supposed to have this kinda silly elements that subvert your expectations of it,like Charon loving suits, there are lines of new people(souls) arriving, and this fun banner that reads "Judgement For Elysium And Eternal Damnation. Welcome, Newly Deceased!" , Percy mentioned he could see Sisyphus at the distance. In the show we don't see the freaking River Styx! No Elysium and seeing Percy deciding that there is where he wants to be once he dies, I think that shows his character. No Persephone's Garden with her pomegranate trees. And the Fields of Asphodel (also known as Asphodel Meadows) are not a forest,are....well,meadows; I know, shocking, kinda hard to figure that out. By the way, that is another strange change because Rick knows what Asphodel looks like, that is why he represented them as an never ending field with the "largest concert crowd" with no electricity and no noise. Ah,also, missed opportunity for a Hazel easter egg
Hades is so TERRIBLE that I almost cried! Disney, we are talking about the King of the Underworld! Do you have idea what kind of creatures live there and they'll respect and fear him? In the books is important that he resents (hardcore) his family. His children inherit that as a fatal flaw. The reason is he had two children with momma di Angelo and he loved them dearly but Zeus wanted to kill them, and finally killed her, Hades only could save the children. Add insult to injury when his 2 brothers had children and received no repercussions for it. It is the reason he did not join the war against his father until the last second (thanks Nico!) . He also feel he got the worst job and he neither lives nor is allowed freely visit the cool, bright Olympus. All of it made him a cold person. Show Hades does not feel like he went through all of that, and if he did, it is like he did not care much. The writers are taking away his complexity and now he is a joke, a boring one.
Zeus was bad too but in a different way. He is just meh, did not make me feel anything in particular. I think it may be because when I imagine Zeus I picture him as a guy with beard, kinda like Santa Claus lmao and Lance Reddick (may he rest in peace, love him) looks nothing like him, so it was hard for me to believe he was Zeus. Maybe is just a me problem to be honest. Also, they made him kinda dumb because when Percy told him his dad is planing a war, he is just like "yeah I know, but right now is more important to fight your dad Poseidon" and that is extremely stupid,to be honest

The last member of the Giraffe family and to my eyes the most beautiful! I must say that when I saw it at the zoo the first time, it didn't strike me as much as now when I draw it. Is clearly the head of a giraffe in the body of a prehistoric animal adorned with the stripes of a zebra running down its legs. If you think of it, is like coming from a fantasy book. Okapi It is a living fossil and contrary to its closest relative, the giraffe, which is mostly found in the savannas, the okapis live in the dense forests of the Congo. It is very elusive and timid making it a really hard specimen to study in the wild. Therefore little is known about it. The poster of the Giraffidae family is coming soon! ___________________________________ Photo Credits: Magda Ehlers ___________________________________

Now that the entirety of season one is out in the world, it's time for me to finally discuss it in great detail:
Percy Jackson & the Olympians TV Series
First off, I want to make it clear that I love this show. As a fan of the books, it was great. But there are a lot of issues.
Casting: I had to start with this because if I didn't include it, idiots would get mad. I love the actors that were casted, particularly the kids. They are incredible actors and have great chemistry with one another. The lines they are given, however, are poor at times.
Script: The writing, imo, is poor because Rick Riordan is a book writer. Script writing and novel writing are two very different arts and his involvement in the script and lack of experience script writing probably didn't mesh. Rick, however, should take this in stride and simply work at it.
Pacing: The show was terribly paced because of, yet again, the writing. But also because they were not given enough episodes to work with. Hopefully, Disney will listen and give the cast & crew more flexibility in the future.
Exposition: Personally, with or without exposition this show would have been lacking because the best way to have handled a world with so much lore would have been an at least partially animated show. If I had creative control over the TV series and unlimited budget, I would have designed the show similarly to Lizzie McGuire with animated Book! Percy showing up and narrating a bit and drawing sketches of myths and other exposition-y stuff.
Immediately Knowing Everything: I have no idea how they can fix this honestly. It was a mistake that changed pacing, characterization, and the plot of every episode poorly and we all have to live with it.
CGI: Once again a victim of the budget. We lost the pink poodle, the zebra, the hell hound, and more to the poor CGI budget that Disney granted this show. I truly hope they get more budget for season two.
Grover: Rick really tried to rewrite Grover's character to be "more important" to the plot, taking away any actual scenes of his characterization, but failed to leave out the jokes. The joke about Grover eating too much not only fell flat but felt icky to me. The nereid giving Percy four pearls only for Grover to be the one to lose one? Made episode seven my least favorite. Percy sort of blaming Grover for them missing the deadline? Not only out of character but angered me.
Gabe: I really had faith that the show would do more with Gabe after the first two episodes and actually make his eventual death earned but his death had no emotional impact because 1) he's not clearly shown as abusive and 2) Sally is not the one who kills him. It not only copied the post credits scene from the movie but also takes away Sally's control of her narrative which should have been emphasized with her characterization in the show.
Crusty's Water Bed: Boring. Should have been cut. They couldn't even bother with CGI enough to make him look like a cyclops.
The Mist and May/Sally: Not everyone who sees through the mist is a seer which is what the show implies and also they never bother to mention that Sally can see through the mist! The May/Sally parallel is extremely important!
Ares's Curse: Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't believe Ares ever curses Percy/Riptide. It's an unfortunate cut that I wish they had kept because imo it is important to the plot of the series.
Killing Alecto: This is very personal to myself and my theories but I always imagined that when Medusa turned someone to stone, their soul was trapped there. I liked that fate for Gabe in the books. Thus, her coming back was disappointing for me.
Aphrodite's Scarf: Sad this didn't make the cut. I know it's not really important but I do miss it.
All in all, I really do hope for more seasons. Hopefully, they can fix the majority of these issues with time 💕

Hello you zestful zebras!
For my painting I want to have a colouring book backdrop in collage. I realised that I don’t really have many colouring books compared to what I thought I had. Instead I traced over pictures of myself and proceeded to draw over them so that they would look like a colouring book.
I think I’ll print these out and paint over them to give a green back drop to my small painting.
I still have a good bit of work to do with this piece but I can do a good bit of it at home.

Episode 7: We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of
Key:
Good — Okay — Nope
My Thoughts:
Episode 4: Probably the only episode with a monster/fight scene I really liked and thought was well done. It was drawn out just enough that tension was raised. Even knowing what was going to happen, my heart was racing the whole time. Loved the Percabeth convo on the train when they should be sleeping. I feel like maybe that will be the callback they make when we get to the stables scene maybe? I really loved the addition of having the Arch as a temple to Athena. Loved the splashing Percy with water scene. Echidna was fabulous. Percy switching with Annabeth? Chefs kiss 😘
Episode 8: Ares fight was good. My only complaint was we never saw Percy develop water powers throughout the whole season so the wave comes out of nowhere without knowing his thought process behind it like we see in the books. I wish we got Ares cursing Percy because I truly believe the moment his sword fails him is end of MoA when he cannot use his sword to save Annabeth and cut the web. I’m sure there’s other ways to show how gut wrenching this is but I’m going to miss this when we get there. Also, disappointed there was no free appliance give away scene on the news but it didn’t seem like Gabe had a job in the show so I guess that wouldn’t have worked out anyway. Luke scene didn’t play out how I hoped but it was still a gut punch and having Annabeth be there was a fantastically angsty decision I’m loving.
Episode 5: This episode was Percabeth perfection honestly. Live laugh love Percabeth. The whole Grover and Ares thing was cool but also threw me off because I honestly don’t think the writers got Grover’s personality right. Aryan’s doing a great job acting what he was given, but book Grover would not be having this conversation. Not a huge fan of having Hephaestus present in this season, but I understand they had to figure out a different storyline because they couldn’t animate the spiders.
Episode 3: Bickering between the trio was great. I liked the consensus song. Loved the Medusa change. One problem. It was very sudden that they switched to trying to kill Medusa after Percy went to all the trouble to defend her and the episode painted her as a victim. It didn’t feel right to me. I think we could have explored that more and worked towards a shift in not trusting her anymore. Y’all could have shown the head too. Like it’s okay. Guarantee, middle schoolers can handle it. Also, we needed longer fight scenes. Draw it out, get my heart pounding because I’m so nervous about what happens next. Please.
Episode 2: Capture the Flag was a great scene. I guess there was one other episode with a well done fight scene. I think Clarisse and Percy’s fight was paced pretty well and it seemed realistic enough. I do wish the scenes with Luke showing Percy how to sword fight were before this because we don’t really get an explanation for why he’s suddenly pretty good at fighting.
Episode 1: It was a good start. I wish we focused more on Yancy and Nancy as Percy and Grover’s bully. I was hyped to see this played out and then Nancy got like a minute of screen time. There was a lot of exposition in this episode which is fine and expected but I feel like there was maybe too much? Some of the explanations could have happened in the next episode. Minotaur and Dodds fights were very anticlimactic. I was getting so hyped for the Minotaur fight and the second my heart started racing the Minotaur was beaten. Like… draw it out more. Build the tension.
Episode 6: We did not need Hermes. Didn’t need him. This episode humanized the gods a little too much and that’s not how this works. The gods are supposed to be deadbeat douchebags. They aren’t coming across that way. Also. Too much telling, not enough showing. Didn’t need to know it was the Lotus Eaters who ran the place. Let it play out please!!! That’s how you get suspense. If you let these scenes play out more then you wouldn’t have to force some tension by making the Solstice pass.
Episode 7: Easily the worst episode. All telling, no showing. Crusty was too easily beaten. Cerberus eating Grover was so stupid and unnecessary. Again, Grover was very ooc (all season but especially this episode). The pearl should have rolled into Tartarus. That would have been much more devastating. They also don’t even name Tartarus? As far as I can remember anyway. Like, obviously I know what that pit is but I read the books. Would you know what the pit was if you hadn’t read them? Hades was not giving god energy. Percy notes in the books that he was the only one to give off a godly vibe. I am coming around to his portrayal but I’m still not totally sold. Percy shouldn’t have figured out Kronos so quickly. Again. All telling, no showing this episode. Let us watch him put the pieces together. It’s not that hard, I promise.
Other Notes:
I wish Hades palace and Mount Olympus actually looked identical like in the books. Sad not to see that.
On the note of Hades being the only one to appear godly to Percy, I wish we could have gotten the gods fire eyes stuff. That was so cool in the books. And I wish the gods were made to look slightly bigger. Like seven foot maybe? Just slightly bigger so they tower taller than the lowly demigods, but also not totally out of proportion of a real human. The gods all appeared so… small. I liked Luke’s small, scary things get crushed speech and it would have been so in line with that to see very tall very big gods. Like, Hades’s throne room should not dwarf him. And it did. He was an ant and Percy and Grover were slightly smaller ants.
Anyway, these are all my thoughts for now. Probably will have to go back through and rewatch again to see if my opinions change.
