Born on this day: post-punk No Wave chanteuse Cristina (Cristina Monet Palaci, 17 January 1956 – 1 April 2020) who made precisely two barbed, weird and distinctive albums - released by the cutting edge Ze label - that flopped commercially and then retired from music. Cristina’s trademark is setting scathing observations to perky music, and she mostly sings and writes within the persona of a jaded party girl or gold digger (a tradition that dates to Mae West and Eartha Kitt). Self-titled debut Cristina (1980) (reissued in 2004 as Doll in the Box) is her mutant disco album. Lushly produced by Kid Creole, it’s campy fun with Latin rhythm in its hips (if you like cowbell, this is the album for you!), but I prefer the 1984 follow-up, the tougher, darker and more cutting New Wave pop of Sleep It Off. Cristina’s venomous, spikily funny lyrics work as wry poetry already, but then she enunciates them in an alienated, deadpan can't-be-bothered snarl (she has “resting bitch voice”, occasionally punctuated with a Johnny Rotten sneer). Here’s a sampling of her wit and wisdom: “My life is in a turmoil / My thighs are black and blue / My sheets are stained, so is my brain / What's a girl to do?” from What’s a Girl to Do? is as lacerating as anything found on Lydia Lunch’s 1980 magnum opus Queen of Siam. “Don't tell me that I'm frigid / Don't try to make me think / I'll do just fine without you / Don’t mutilate my mink” from her punk masterpiece “Don’t Mutilate My Mink”. (In their obituary for her, The Guardian describes it as sounding like Audrey Hepburn fronting the Sex Pistols). See also: her icy Christmas classic “Things Fall Apart.” Like many abrasive early eighties New York punk funk musicians (see also: James Chance of The Contortions), she may initially work best in small doses and for many may be an acquired taste. But think of Cristina as analogous to Campari – once you acquire that taste, you wondered how you ever lived without it.

Song of the Day: November 30, 2024
James White and The Blacks: Christmas With Satan Tojo on Amazon Prime Music Saturday is lost classics day and this is a Holiday edition. Arguably the greatest Holiday music compilation of the New Wave period is the 1981 album A Christmas Record on the No Wave label ZE Records. This album is most important for being the original release of the modern holiday classic “Christmas Wrapping” by The…

I had to make some Princess Zeach text posts.
Shout out to Hunter for the banging makeup she did! The whole beginning of the Mario Party video (aka the making of Zeach) is so wholesome and cute.

“Fingers move fingers / My wrists made of satin / Don't be afraid of what's gonna happen / Elbows to ankles my fists out of place / I turn around backwards and off slides my face …” From “Mechanical Flattery” by Lydia Lunch
I Was a Teenage Death Kitten: stark death jazz masterpiece Queen of Siam, the solo debut album by luscious No Wave bad girl Lydia Lunch, was released on this day (9 February 1980) 45 years ago by ZE Records. “Her laconic slur of a voice has never sounded sexier, and her off-key rendition of "Spooky" is so lazily erotic that it nearly sucks the life out of you,” concludes John Dougan of AllMusic guide. “A putrid classic of style and substance.” Is there any higher praise? Even dean of American rock critics Robert Christgau - most definitely not normally an admirer of Lunch’s - begrudgingly admired Queen: “Having walked out on three different bands led by this dame, I have the credentials to certify this funny, sexy, accidental little record. Half the time she exaggerates her flat Cleveland accent into a hickish, dumb-and-dirty come-on or parody of same, and half the rest of the time she plays her foolish nihilist poetry for laughs, which leaves a quarter of the time when she's the nihilist fool I'll walk out on till the day she dies. Pat Irwin's big-band atonalisms suit her city-of-night shtick perfectly. And "Spooky" is the cover of the year.” The striking cover image was snapped by George DuBose. Lunch’s black leather bustier (customized with construction nails) was created by Paul Zone. As DuBose has recalled, “The mirror idea was Lydia's. She showed me a book, Glamour Portraits of the '30s, and in that book there was a portrait of Lucille Ball that she wanted me to copy.” Queen of Siam is a life-changing record!

WE ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY TO TALK ABOUT ONE OF THE BEST CARE TAKING SCENES IVE EVER WITNESSED IN A BL
I’m sorry but I love EVERYTHING about this.
1. Ze Rui saw it was storming and ran to Zongyi’s place b/c he knows Zongyi has negative reactions to storms
2. Zongyi being honest with his feelings. I’m sorry but this is SOOOO refreshing to me. I think he did a lot of what some adults struggle to do. Like yeah he’s injured but he knows this is gonna make him even more down bad than he was before and he’s trying to set up a boundary with Ze Rui. He’s not shying away from the fact that he likes Ze Rui.
3. The lighting and atmosphere, LOVE
4. I must be down bad…down DELUSIONAL. Usually I would never let a man tell me to shut up…but Ze Rui got me twiddling my thumbs and swinging my feet. Just adding in that Ze Rui looks FIONE ASF. In all black, wet hair, beautiful melanated skin, and taking charge?? SIGN ME UP! MY MAN, MY MAN, MY MAN
