Warli lavora sui segni, sui materiali e su come tradurli in superfici tattili e cromatiche contemporanee.
Read the full article

Forged Alliances Part 2: Manaan
Continuing on my replay of SoR with my latest smug...
Part I here
So, itâs been awhile since Tython and Korriban. Originally, in game, T3-G2 reaches out to the player to send them to Manaan. Alas and alack, 7.0 killed the breadcrumb quest, so now you just get a direct âgo to Manaanâ pass from Fleet. I have the video saved on a previous smug playthough and the text commemorated in my fic series.Â
I recently played KOTOR, and the music on Manaan comes from that game; the game map is a clear tribute too. Itâs more pronounced here than it was on Taris. I can see why people were getting super hyped for Shadow of Revan to drop, with all of these references and planets to revisit.Â
Once the player arrives on Manaan, Theron talks about his favorite thing: intel (like father, like son). Or, in this case, why he does not have intel: Darok isnât sharing with SIS as promised. This goes beyond SpecForce tensions with SIS however.
Even as Theron is dealing with the potential traitors in SpecForce, we also have some potential zany activities going on. Although Eva is seeing credits as they speak about infiltrating a lab (hello, kolto!), thereâs also a few ghosts coming back from the dead: namely, Rakata technology.
If one played the planetary quests on Tatooine and on Belsavis Pubside or Impside, they encountered the remnants of world-ending machines and/or prisons built by the Rakata. Now, Darok and Arkous seem to moving this stuff around for unknown reasons. Nice and creepy.Â
At the end of the briefing, Theron mentions meeting a contact and seeing if the information she has is worth the hype.
Eva disapproves.
âShe?â could convey surprise, but whatâs so weird about a female contact? Do only men play spy games in the Old Republic? We know that not to be the case based upon planetary missions for SIS Pubside. Maybe âshe?â is meant to represent the player wanting to know who this person is.
Me personally, I interpret this as sort of a hard push by developers for the Theron romance; this could be read as jealousy. And indeed, the developers did push both the Theron romance and the Lana romance throughout Forged Alliances and SoR, especially in the finale of Rishi. (Are you sure you REALLY want to go to Yavin NOW instead of talking to a SPY?!) There are some opportunities to play on the rivalry and/or potential for a love triangle.
While poking around the scientific horror show (and stealing kolto), Eva runs into Jakarro. This leads to one of the better comedic set-ups in the game:
Theron:Â Their story checks out (....)Â Charges against them both for smuggling, disorderly conduct, assault...
Eva:Â Even the droid?
Theron:Â Yeah, why do you ask?
(screenshot out of order...but you see the âproblemâ with C2-D4 being charged with assault....)
The gag here is somewhat representative of the stronger writing on Pubside Forged Alliances and SoR, honestly. The Imperial side has no parallel to this interaction. Throughout Forged Alliances and SoR, Impside, there are more plotholes and less neat incorporation of prior content -- and more âforcedâ funny bits rather than the well-played visual gag here.Â
Honestly, the writing in Forged Alliances/SOR for the Republic feels like compensation for the Dreadmasters and Oricon. In that case, the Pub sort of just gets plopped into Oricon, while the entire planetary plotline of Belsavis for the Empire was dedicated to the set-up. âHere, itâs your turn for crappy writing,â essentially. Although the Empire has more breadcrumb planets that lead up to this point (Dromund Kaas for the Revanites, Nar Shaddaa for the Starforge, as well as Tatooine and Belsavis for the Rakata tech), itâs nowhere near as well-integrated and well-written out as the Republicâs end of the content; the Republic side clearly conveys the danger of the Revanites, Revan, and even the Emperor -- it makes the player feel how important this operation is. I did not feel that sense of urgency as I played through on my Impside character. It just felt âlighterâ and less serious/significant. Â
We also encounter Lana Beniko, an exceedingly polite Sith Lord. Whatâs interesting here is how the writers handle Jakarro and the playerâs opposing faction operative. If you play Pubside, itâs implied that Lana and Jakarro & D4 team up while Theron continues to be your handler. If you are Imperial, Jakarro & D4 and Theron become bros while you and Lana remain a team. This results in different dialogue and some different dynamics throughout SoR. Still, the five of you are fighting for the same cause, and Lana, as ever, is pragmatic:
We leave off Manaan aware of the potential of an Infinite Army: the Revanites are using Rakata tech to make self-repairing soldiers that could be unstoppable. Weâve thwarted them here, but whatâs not to say theyâve already started exporting this stuff to manufacturing sites around the galaxy? Darok was shopping for smugglers who could handle such merchandise (including Jakarro), and we leave our intrepid friends wondering where the traitors-- and their Rakata tech -- are off to next.Â

2019 ANNUAL FAVORITES
As always, any media that was widely released in the calendar year 2019, that I personally consumed within the calendar year 2019, was eligible. This last was ranked on December 31st, 2019 and unchanged since then (no matter what I end up thinking about it.) Some of the blurbs were written in 2020.
FAVORITE FILMS
10. The King
9. Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw
Hobbs and Shaw is finally David Leitch's follow-up to Atomic Blonde that we were promised: a stylish Saturday morning cartoon on the big screen from a director who actually knows how to shoot action. These latterday Fast and Furious movies are made to be shared with family and friends, to splendor in their ridiculous excess, and this spinoff somehow manages to raise the bar once again. The Rock and Jason Statham's chemistry is undeniable, but it's Idris Elba's gentleman villain who very nearly steals the show. By the time he looked straight into the camera and said "Genocide, schmenocide," this entry has forcefully secured a spot on my top ten list.
8. Knives Out
Rian Johnson's whodunnit bucks the genre send-up trend by making a faithful Agatha Christie lookalike set in modern times instead of a subversive digression. It is elevated and gloriously derailed by Daniel Craig's Southern sleuth Benoit Blanc, and supported by a murderer's row of major actors all treating minor roles like they're Shakespeare summer stock. Its twists and turns play fair and work even better on a second viewing. It's not common for an old fashioned mystery to be this much of an old fashioned good time.
7. Marriage Story
6. Jojo Rabbit
5. Us
4. Ready or Not
3. Little Women
2. Booksmart
1. The Lighthouse
FAVORITE RECORDS
10. The World is Yours 2 - Rich the Kid
9. CLARITY - Kim Petras
8. Fine Line - Harry Styles
Harry Styles achieved near The Black Keys status of "your-dad-thinks-this-might-be-real-music" with his eponymous 2017 debut, trading gang vocals for 1970's The Who style ballads. In the interim he became a queer fashion icon, and with his sophomore record Fine Line, he trades the trim Britrock for zany British Invasion escapades. The songs are more lush and spacey, and nearly everyone is a standout - the claustrophobic jungle beat of "Lights Up," the Discover Weekly campfire singalong "To Be So Lonely," or "She," which apes all the atmosphere of "Eleanor Rigby" that scarred me as a child. My favorite is "Canyon Moon," an optimistic road trip anthem seemingly ripped straight out of An Extremely Goofy Movie. That a pop album of this grand scale can have this much of a unique voice behind it is a small miracle in 2019.
7. Norman Fucking Rockwell! - Lana Del Rey
6. WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? - Billie Eilish
5. Solutions - K.Flay
4. Hot Pink - Doja Cat
3. Heard It in a Past Life - Maggie Rogers
2. Father of the Bride - Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend ditch the high stakes and Ivy League angst to deliver a double serving of '90's "world music" about environmentalism. The pitch is, at best, disappointing, along with their Kacey-Musgraves-inspired stance of dumbing down their lyrics for festival singalongs. But once you get over yourself - which Ezra Koenig is so passionately telling you he's done - there's a rich, lush soundscape of country, folk, and scat that features some of the bands most comforting ("Harmony Hall," "Flower Moon") and adventurous ("Sympathy," "Bambina") music yet. The standout is "Stranger," a catchy spring jam about letting your partner's family break you out of your social anxiety. Wherever Vampire Weekend go from here, it's clear it'll be where they want to be.
1. Dedicated - Carly Rae Jepsen
How do you follow up a classic? Make another one.
FAVORITE SONGS
As always, any song featured on one of my ten favorite records of the year is not eligible to also appear on my favorite songs list.
10. "Panini" - Lil' Nas X
By any tangible measure other than personal preference, Lil' Nas X's "Old Town Road" is the song of 2019. However, it's his follow-up "Panini" that proved he wasn't a one trick pony. "Panini" is a fun, short sing-songy lamentation on losing your fanbase as you get famous: "Thought you wanted me to go up/Why you tryna keep me teeny?" It's notable for being another entry from the young memelord in rap music clean enough for kids and still hard enough for older ears.
9. "Shake It" - Charli XCX with Big Freedia and CupcakKe and Brooke Candy and Pablo Vittar
Charli XCX's sublime "Shake It" plays like a twerk anthem from the year 3019 being used as a stereo test for Bose surround sound. The British party girl/sad fembot invites a who's who of queercore rap to get down with her, and they all come to party. From a record and a year blessed with great Charli singles, this is a few lightyears ahead of anything else she or any other pop star was doing.
8. "SeĂąorita" - Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes
7. "Alligator" - Of Monsters and Men
What I didn't expect from Of Monsters and Men, the "Little Talks" outfit that managed to smooth over some of their Mumford and Sons aping smaltz by mixing it with the kitchen sink jam appeal of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, was an absolute barn-burner. "Alligator" is hard as nails, roaring to life with its metalcore double-drums and electric (!) guitar riffs. Lead singer Nanna BryndĂs lifts the chorus into the stratosphere, boldly crying "I'm fever dreaming!" It's like they've never sounded before, and tragically never did again on the rest of the record.
6. "A Thousand Bad Times" - Post Malone
5. "Gloria" - The Lumineers
4. "Apple" - Julia Michaels
3. "Who Hurt You?" - Daniel Caesar
2. "Zanies and Fools" - Chance the Rapper with Nicki Minaj
Chance the Rapper's The Big Day was fun, a fitting tribute to his wedding reception, but all the dance-centric odes to young monogamy felt a little low stakes in comparision to his previous records. Then comes the final track "Zanies and Fools," with its list of grievances spanning the personal, historical, and political. It all starts with an interpolation of Rodger and Hammerstein's "Impossible/It's Possible," recalling most specifically Brandy and Whitney Houston's unbelievable rendition in the neo-woke 1997 Cinderella. Then Chance comes to life, starting with an admission of failure ("I had a bunch of midlife crises before I turned twenty-five") before telling the charming story of meeting his future wife for the first time as a child at his mother's office party. His third verse argues, as the whole record does, for the remaining importance of marriage, before careening through the brutal truth of American history, arriving on revelations universal ("For every small increment liberated, our women waited") and personal ("Sometimes love come with its own barricade.") It's a beautiful, stunning conclusion to a record full of quiet revolution.
And then Nicki Minaj comes on, to close out the record and bookend the decade by delivering her best verse since 2010's career defining Kanye West assist on "Monster." She follows Chance's lead and tells the story of her rise alongside the meeting of her future husband. She chronicles her career, her reconciliation with her convicted lover, and looks forward to an upcoming wedding of her own, all with the hunger and technical prowess of a rapper far less rich. She finds time to drop one of the best brags of the year ("I'm in your top two/And I ain't number two/Conquered rap, then the pop too") before singing along to the sample: "It's possible/It's possible to me." In a record concerned primarily with challenging modern norms, "Zanies and Fools" places romance as being as historically important as everything else, merging worlds until you lay astounded by Chance's conviction that maybe it is possible.
1. "Cruel Summer" - Taylor Swift
The best part of any Taylor Swift song is her dramatic, sarcastic, conversationalist writing style, and the best thing she writes are bridges. Her absolute best ones - "Love Story," "Mine," "All Too Well" - serve as legitimate climaxes to the song, exploding the building tension of the verses as we follow characters getting down on one knee or chasing another into the street. That unique songwriting voice was almost entirely absent on 2017's imposed exile experiment reputation, so Lover arrived onto my phone with impossibly low expectations. I shouldn't have counted a good writer out.
"Cruel Summer," Lover's orienting call to arms, arrives fully formed as a sepiatone soaked August waste instant classic. She sets the scene in the verses, exacting the experience of being infatuated with someone before the breaking point. "Hang your head low/In the glow of the vending machine," she coos. The chorus is evervescent, flightly and transcendent all at once: "It's new/The shape of your body/It's blue/The feeling I've got." And then comes the bridge, roaring to life, and all of a sudden you're right back there in 2008, dancing in a storm in your best dress. We're there with her as she lies to her friends, cries in the back of Ubers, and gives up on secrets as soon as she makes them. "And I snuck in through the garden gate," she screams, "Every night that summer just to seal my fate!" It's a singalong of epic proportions, a bridge to rival the best of her immense catalog, and a perfect enscapsulation of the beautiful brutality of summer love.
FAVORITE VIDEO GAMES
I played less games this year than any other since the Switch came out. I'd like to change my personal attitude about time management to play more next year. Most of what I spent time on this year was the Smash Ultimate DLC, but here are the five games I played this year that actually came out in 2019.
5. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
I've realized I'm kind of a junkie for a good racing game, although I never think of it as one of my favorite genres. I put a lot of time into this game's story mode and it's ingenius Battle Pass. It served as a good companion to the N. Sane Trilogy I played last year.
4. Sayonara Wild Hearts
This game to me was pitched as "Carly Rez Jepsen," which is maybe too perfect to ever live up to its hype. I think the music and the style are better than the gameplay, but I think it's constant experimentation and brief length are major selling points.
3. Mortal Kombat 11
The story mode of Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the best things I've ever watched/played. It's got the tone of Fast and Furious with the scale of Avengers: Endgame, and all the great character connection that's available to a thirty-year-old franchise. The gameplay may look like hot garbage on Switch, but it plays excellently and the cut scenes looked incredible.
2. Cadence of Hyrule
A wonderful game that is maybe better paced than any other I've ever played. It gives you just enough of everything you want and then doesn't overstay its welcome. The music is great, it looks gorgeous, the gameplay is wonderful and the basic conceit of moving in time felt way less foreign to me than I thought it would. With its open world and fast travel slates, this is the perfect "second Zelda" to play after Breath of the Wild.
1. Ape Out
The title screen of Ape Out made me gasp out loud at how excellent its font choice was. This is a game with style to spare, slick gameplay, and the amazing hook of timing jazz drums out with your action to the music. The structure of being several old jazz cassettes telling a surprisingly moving and subliminal story worked like gangbusters to me, and led to the most satisfying climax in any game this year.
FAVORITE EPISODES OF THE MANDALORIAN
The Mandalorian gave me new Star Wars to share weekly with my roommates, partner, and family, and I watched it (and Baby Yoda) bring all kinds of people closer this year. It felt frustratingly small at times compared to the films, but when it was at its best, it was some of the best Star Wars ever made. Plus, it gave us Ludwig Goransson's absolutely incredible industrial drill/triumphant trumpet score. Here's how I would rank the episodes.
8. âChapter One: The Mandalorianâ
Dave Filoni's pilot mostly fails because it can't figure out what it's pretending to be before it finally reveals what it actually is. It finds its groove in the last ten minutes, and the reveal absolutely killed me the first time.
7. âChapter Five: The Gunslingerâ
Dave Filoni's Tatooine side story was real rough, and it had nothing to do with "fan service." It had to do with the boy band level acting ability of certain featured side characters.
6. âChapter Seven: The Reckoningâ
It's a testament to the rest of the series that this episode is so low. This one finally ties everything together in a way that is so satisfying and leads perfectly into the finale.
5. âChapter Three: The Sinâ
Deborah Chow's brutal and desply satisfying Star Wars via John Wick revenge tale. This episode was the point where the show solidified as something really special.
5. âChapter Two: The Childâ
Rick Famuyiwa's action-packed first episode mines the comedic potential of Jawas in a way that nothing else has since 1977's A New Hope. An absolute banger.
3. âChapter Four: Sanctuaryâ
Bryce Dallas Howard's standalone episode wins big by turning up the sweet, sweet romance in some beautiful forest vistas. It manages to make chicken walkers terrifying for the first time maybe ever?
2.â Chapter Six: The Prisonerâ
Rick Famuyiwa's horror flairs make this dark episode a series high. Give this man a Star Wars movie already.
1. âChapter Eight: Redemptionâ
Taika Waititi's finale starts with an extended comedic beat from a Saturday Night Live guest star, a staple of this series - only this time, it's actually funny. The final episode lived up to the hype, paying off the plot threads that had been building all season and featuring the best action and character development we got to see on the show. It was a fitting end to this season and an exciting set-up to the next one.
OTHER
Stranger Things 3
This faster, more intense season of Stranger Things was maybe the most satisfying genre work of the entire year. The scope of it was absolutely insane - these kids with slingshots are going to fight the Russian army??? The newfound confidence in pacing, camera work, and comedy make sure that there are almost no low points. This plays like a six hour movie that's right next to Return of the King and Toy Story 3 as a third entry that really gets it all right.
Halsey
Halsey somewhat quietly had a killer year, especially for one where she didn't release a new record. She had one of the best guest features of the year on her remix of "Without Me" - Juice WRLD, rest in peace - and dropped another one of her own on Post Malone's "Die For Me," where she "Went through your phone/And called the girls in your DMs/And took all them home." Her summer stomper "Nightmare" took the best side of radio rock, her music videos and SNL live performances showed an impressive control of visual storytelling, and she ended the year with "Graveyard," the best Jon Bellion track of 2019. I'm excited to see how she pays off all of the pent up good will in 2020.
It's Still Nothing Personal - All Time Low
An approach to the album anniversary that I found way more satisfying than the standard remastered rerelease or tour - a live studio rerecording of the entire record as all the songs exist ten years later. This record was a huge part of being in high school ten years ago, and it was so much fun to revisit it this year right alongside the band.
K.K. Slider Covers
These things are a hoot. I prefer Overspace 2 on SoundCloud and Clay Kramer on YouTube.
TOP TEN DEFINING MUSICAL ARTISTS OF THE 2010s (IN MY LIFE)
This is a little bonus for you - not my favorites, but an attempt to think about the whole last decade and rank which artists had the largest influence on my life personally (for better or worse.) There are so many more waiting in the wings. My life changed an incredible amount in these last ten years, which is oddly comforting when I think about feeling like things never change anymore.
10. Taylor Swift
9. Frank Ocean
8. Kendrick Lamar
7. Lana Del Rey
6. Chance the Rapper
5. Kanye West
4. Fall Out Boy
3. Carly Rae Jepsen
2. Lorde
The poet laureate of my generation.
1. The 1975
Maybe beating out Lorde not necessarily in preference but just virtue of having three records that hit me so hard in the last decade instead of two.
Thanks everyone for a great five years! See you in the new decade!

Today, I saw Jupiter Ascending for the first time. It was everything I was warned it would be. I loved it.
If youâre looking for an utterly unselfconscious outre sci-fi âfantasy kitchen sinkâ that looks like if someone involved in David Lynchâs Dune decided âwhat this needs is more raver outfits, gothic art deco architecture, and hover heeliesâ romp, with delightfully entertaining... everything ...then give this film a watch.Â
Most of the actors take to their parts with either deeply earnest reads of outrageous lines, or desperately hammy takes. Both are entirely excellent in their own way.
Iâve seen it described as âbasically lifted directly from Lana Wachowskiâs middle school notebookâ if she had one, and I donât disagree. I mean, if you took my theoretical middle school notebook and made a zany movie out of it, itâd be chockablock with wizards and dragons and lightsabers, instead of hybrid people and dragons and blasters, but the principle is the same. Itâs just good fun.

Snow White and the 1026 Dwarfs
Snow White woke up in the strangest little bed! Â She'd happened upon the small, cozy house deep in the woods, found nobody at home, and promptly crashed in the first bed she'd spotted. Â Sleep claimed her then, dragging her away to a place of relative peace and calm... carefully letting her ignore how tiny all the furnishings were, how oddly low were the ceilings and fixtures. And now, the next morning! Â What odd little men surrounded her! Â Normally she'd be alarmed by close proximity to so many strangers, but the events of the past day had granted her an oddly calm outlook on life. Â Nothing much rattled her anymore. Snow White blinked sleepily, yawned, and stretched. Â The men watched her every movement, transfixed. "Do you talk?" She asked experimentally. One older man -- tiny, rotund, and wiser than the rest with a long white beard -- glanced around at the others and nodded. Â He adjusted his spectacles and stepped forward. "I'm Doc," he explained with a jolly chuckle. Â "And these are my friends: Smarmy, Ragey, Explainy, Glossy, Pookie, Pesty, Grippy, Inebriated, Teary, Swampy, Piggy, Catty, Hitler, Stroky, Zombie, Mooky, Tandy, Fakey, Twinky, Biggie, Munchy, Â I'm ever so sorry for barging in here uninvited, but I don't really have a home any more... would you mind terribly if I stayed for awhile? Â I can cook and clean and--" Doc raised a hand, interrupting her gently. "We'd be honored if you stayed!" All 1026 dwarfs nodded in agreement, and were so thrilled they threw Snow White a party to celebrate their new friendship. Â The party lasted late into the evening, and everyone passed out with full tummies and a happy smile lighting their faces. The next day the dwarfs arose early and prepared for work. Â Snow White cooked them breakfast and when it was time to leave they all lined up at the door to bid her farewell for the day. Oh, how silly of me! Iâm Snow White. ||
Born in a wealth Vietnamese family, little Tuyat was the joy and life of her parents. They had an old hotel chain throughout Asia, having plans to expand the company and reach Europe as well. When her mother died, her father thought that Tuyat needed a motherly figure while growing up, so he married a woman named Ramilda, a German lady that made all men turn their heads to look at her. At the beginning the stepmother tried to conceal her true nature by being loving and caring towards her step daughter, but when her father died on a terrible accident, Ramilda begun to show her true intentions. Tuyat was forced to do the house job, and instead of learning how to manage her familyâs business the little girl was only allowed to study normal subjects, the ones she had on school.
Poor Tuyat was forced to do all her house work, and sometimes she wouldnât even have time for studying. Nonetheless she was still the face of her fatherâs company, so whenever Ramilda had a big reunion she had to be there. Because of it, Tuyat went with her to Germany, there she met a boy named Florian. He was everything Tuyat had dreamed of about, but she couldnât pursue it, she had bigger problems rather than just fall for a boy. Her stepmother tried to poison her, first with comb, then with a dress, but she finally succeed it with an apple pie. Ever since, Tuyat go to a variety of doctors and no one can discover what she did to poison her, they only agree that maybe it had something to do with the zany experiments. Her kidney started to fail along with some other organs.Â
Tuyat ran away from her stepmother, trying to save her life. She was adopted by a German family, with seven sons. They changed her name to Svelda Schenee. Now Svelda and her brothers changed to Portus Cale, sheâs studying to be a doctor and finally be able to discover whatâs wrong with her and how to save herself. She also wants to get back her fatherâs hotel chain once again, but for now, her main concern is not dying from her organs.Â
Make a wish into the well, thatâs all you have to do, and if your hear it echoing, your wish will soon come true. ||
Ramilda Trang --> Mirror mirror on the wall, whoâs the fairest of them all?
Svelda could never find in her any ill-mean to her once stepmother, she only truly wishes to get what is her back.Â
Benjamin âBashfulâ Schenee --> âMy brother is my only best friend.â
Benjamin is her closest brother, she trusts him with everything.Â
Florian Fischer -->Â âOnce day my prince will come.â
Sheâs not sure what she truly feels for him, only that he does make her blush.Â

When I saw the previews for this movie, I knew I had to see it. It was plainly obvious that the writers took the idea of Superman and turned him evil. A whole slew of what-ifâs presented itself in my mind. It was not an easy movie to digest. Weâve had 80+ years of the good alien guy who would never do anything that the protagonist does in this movie. Was this Zodâs spawn instead? Or Clark Kent gone bad, very baaaad?
Superhero Horror, a new thing
If you do love the superhero genre and are not tired of it, this is a must-watch film. Directed by (the Guardians of the Galaxy ) David Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn and Kenneth Huang. Writers Brian and Mark Gunn give us a unique expansion into this genre with âsuperhero horrorâ. Just be forewarned there are jarring moments and extremely gory scenes. The soundtrack aids in hammering home the darkness and a build-up of intensity as Brandon Breyer played by Jackson A. Dunn becomes more emboldened with each step into ultimate villainy.
[Spoilers from here on out!]
Programming: Nurture vs Nature
The question that first comes up is that despite all the good his adoptive earthly parent do in raising him, he still chooses the dark side. [Spoiler] He kills them without a signal drop of remorse. It is unclear to me whether he was programmed in his DNA towards evil (which would mean he canât help himself) or whether the programming occurred during the journey to Earth and got activated upon him hitting puberty at 12 (which would mean there must be some good in him and he can feasibly be deprogrammed). Iâm thinking if itâs the later, then the original programming is far superior to the earthly programming he got because it clearly takes over in the end.
More Questions
The age factor. Itâs interesting how the writers go with the onslaught of puberty as the trigger for this kid. In the Superman mythos, Clark Kent gets called by holo-dad when heâs in high school and heads north to find out who he is and the reason heâs on Earth.
Brandon on the other hand stays put listening to the voices coming from the hidden spaceship in an alien tongue declaring that he should âTake the world!â. You add his diminutive stature where he looks more like an 8-year old, gets treated as such by constant babying by parents who donât know how to parent it seems, and school bullies who tease his genius level intellect, well itâs a recipe that explodes with disaster for everybody.
You know, twelve year olds arenât really known for maturity or rational responses to stressful situations so having superpowers would just naturally cause him to become conceited quick and reckless. He goes from disobedience to lying to murder to all-out destruction swiftly. He does think of himself superior to all and says so quite casually. The first time he realizes he has powers is during the lawnmower scene where out of frustration in getting the machine to start, he inadvertently flings it sending it flying across the field. When he comes upon the mower, he stares at the blades spinning, daring himself, he sticks his hand in only to see that heâs able to warp the blades.
Secret School Crush
Next up we get introduced to his secret school crush Caitlyn aka the Lana Lang. Unfortunately for her, Brandon pulverizes her hand and breaks her wrist. We see her later with a cast and he stalks her (kinda like Superman Returns all over again). There is no way her hand will ever be normal again. This interaction also brings into the whole âalien superhero romance with earth womanâ conundrum. You know if an older Brandon tries to get romantic physically, that chick is roadkill.
Speaking of roadkill, how Brandon kills his uncle is just gory. So gory. I wonât give away what happens but it was scenes like this one that left a hole in my soul watching them.
Bye Dad, C-Ya Mom!
By the time Brandon Breyer kills his dad, Iâm like somebody needs to take this jerk out. If there is a sequel in the works, Iâd love to see a superhero take BB out preferably Wonder Woman or Supergirl because you know Batman doesnât stand a chance with this 12-year old. There is no Martha to stop the eventual carnage. Heâd be burnt human toast in 5 seconds just like dad.
Kryptonite?
I can hear Nicholas Cage screaming out âKryptoniteâ in his obnoxious, over-the-top manner that I love. Yep, the only other thing to take this monster down is his glowing-red, baby spaceship. De facto Kryptonite. Itâs the only thing that cuts him and makes him bleed as his mom finds out. Unfortunately, she is unable to do the deed herself and gets killed in probably one of THE MOST horrendous ways. Elizabeth Banks does a fantastic job of being the âMartha Kentâ here. She still believes in her âbaby boyâ but baby boy (look at the arrogance in the pic below) gives absolutely zero f*cks.
We come to end of the movie, where we are treated to news clips of Brandonâs destruction and murder of humans around Brightburn, the small town in Kansas where this all takes place. He must have really hated living in that small town. Zany actor, Michael Rooker gives us a nice mock of A-l-e-x-J-o-n-e-s in the YouTube scene at the very end. Hilarious.
There is so much to pick apart and analyze with this but Iâll end it here.
Photoschmotoâs Rating: 5/5. Go see!
Brightburn takes the Superman mythos and flings it into the dark side. When I saw the previews for this movie, I knew I had to see it. It was plainly obvious that the writers took the idea of Superman and turned him evil.

Thank You FilmStruck
As a film lover, I am absolutely distraught that FilmStruckâs swan song is in seven days. The creativity and passion used when putting films on the streaming site was absolutely apparent and for a film lover, it was refreshing.
This streaming service has been great in introducing me to films I would have never even thought of watching. So, as my ode to FilmStruck, I am going to list the top 15 films that I watched on the service that touched me in some way or another (and it was so hard just to pick 15).Â
So here are my top 15 films that I watched on FilmStruck that I think everyone should check out and they are in no particular order:
1. Norma Rae (1979) - Starring Sally Field, Beau Bridges, and Don Leibman
Sally Field plays a single mother who helps unionize the textile factory she works at, even though there is great risk and danger involved.Â
Why you should watch it: Sally Field is so inspiring as Norma Rae! She absolutely deserved the Oscar she won for that role. Also, girl power and unionizing is awesome!!
2. Bicycle Thieves (1948) - Starring Lamberto Maggiorani and Enzo Staiola
A working-class family man has his bicycle stolen, which he needs for the job he finally got in depressed post-War World II Italy. Thus, he takes his son on his journey to find his bicycle.Â
Why you should watch it: This story is such a heartbreakingly beautiful tale. The emotion that both Maggiorani and Staiola convey really help the audience feel their pain. The film also takes you all over the streets of Italy, which is fantastic.Â
3. The Crowd (1928) - Starring James Murray and Eleanor Boardman
The story of a man and woman who fall in love and get married. However, the husbandâs unhappiness with their small apartment, being a small fish in a big pond, and his in-laws disapproval could be the downfall of their marriage.
Why you should watch it: Even though this film is from the 1920s, some of the concepts can be placed in any time period. The situations that the husband and wife go through could happen to any working-class family. Also, King Vidor did some amazing directing and some of the shots he set up are just spectacular.Â
4. La Notte (1961) - Starring Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni, and Monica Vitti
A married coupleâs deteriorating marriage is magnified through one day and one night. The two flirt with other people and have to truly realize their personal problems.
Why you should watch it: Michaelangelo Antonioni does a brilliant job in capturing this couple and their unraveling relationship. Also Mastroianni and Moreau are fantastic as the couple. Not all movies have the happiest of endings, but that is what makes them, and this film, so realistic. Life isnât always happiness.
5. The Nights of Cabiria (1957) - Starring Guiletta Masina, Francois Perrier, and Franca Marzi
A prostitute desperately wants love, but all she gets from men is extreme heartbreak.Â
Why you should watch it: Guiletta Masina is FANTASTIC as Cabiria! Oh my gosh, she is so good at making Cabiria a sympathetic character. Also, who doesnât love a good story about a hooker with a heart of gold?
6. Whatâs Up, Doc? (1972) - Starring Ryan OâNeal, Barbara Streisand, and Madeline Kahn
A zany Screwball Comedy that involves 4 plaid bags that all contain different contents. Each bag is important in its own way and causes so much confusion, itâs hysterical.
Why you should watch it: This movie is so zany. That is the only way to describe it. Barbara Streisand and Ryan OâNeal are great at comedy! And this is Madeline Kahnâs first feature film! I also never realized there were Screwball Comedies made in the â70s.
7. Le Samourai (1967) - Starring Alain Delon, Francois Perier, and Nathalie Delon
A professional hit man makes a hit but has witnesses. He tries his best to make an alibi for himself, but ends up getting entangled in the web of his witnesses.Â
Why you should watch it: This film is badass! Even though it is French, this film has major Japanese Samurai film influences! Also, it was my first introduction to the amazing Alain Delon and he is such a fantastic actor. Â
8. Shadows (1958) - Starring Ben Carruthers, Leila Goldoni, and Hugh Hurd
Itâs the Beat-era in New York! Jazz is used throughout the film to help explore interracial relationships and friendships.Â
Why you should watch it: This is John Cassavetesâs directorial debut and he uses jazz and jump shots to give us a feeling of the fast paced life the characters are living. Also this film was made in the late â50s and was absolutely revolutionary for its time. No one wanted to honestly address racism, and Cassavetes (who is a white man) is very honest about the subject.Â
9. Sunflower (1970) - Starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni
An Italian couple gets married right before WWII. The husband gets drafted and never comes home. The wife goes on a journey to find him and realizes he is still alive, in Russia, living a new life.
Why you should watch it: This film WILL break your heart. But if a film doesnât make you feel any emotion, then whatâs the point of watching it? Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni are magnificent in this film! Also the cinematography is breathtaking. Audiences witness Italy and Russia as if they are there.Â
10. History Is Made at Night (1937) - Starring Jean Arthur, Charles Boyer, and Leo Carillo
A divorcee falls in love with a French man but her insanely jealous ex-husband will spare no measure to keep her from moving on.
Why you should watch it: This film has Charles Boyer at his best. He portrays charm, silliness, and determination so well. Also Colin Clive is so sinister as the ex-husband, he is the best antagonist. Jean Arthur is vulnerable as the woman who wants to be free. There is also a great bit with a hand with a face drawn on it.
11. He Who Gets Slapped (1924) - Starring Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, and John Gilbert
A professor is betrayed by a count and leaves his old life to become a clown. He then tries to save a young woman he loves from falling into the countâs web.
Why you should watch it: Lon Chaney will break your heart. He does such a good job at playing a clown who seems to always be smiling, but in reality is in so much emotional pain. Also Norma Shearer and John Gilbert together are absolutely electric. They are both so young and so good looking.
12. Belle de Jour (1967) - Starring Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, and Michel Piccoli
A frigid housewife takes a daytime job as a prostitute.Â
Why you should watch it: This movie is wild!! The housewife who wonât even touch her husband becoming a prostitute? Thatâs such a randomly satisfying story line. Also, Deneuveâs Severine has very interesting dreams that blur reality and fantasy.Â
13. Cluny Brown (1946) - Starring Jennifer Jones, Charles Boyer, and Peter Lawford
Cluny Brown is a parlor maid who just wants to be a plumber. When she meets Czech refugee Adam Belinski, their zany shenanigans shake up an English village.Â
Why you should watch it: Jennifer Jones is perfect as Cluny! She plays her with a naivety that is just refreshing and funny. Charles Boyer as Professor Belinski is great too because he is a man of great knowledge who isnât afraid to be unconventional. It also hilarious seeing Cluny fix plumbing problems.
14. Keep Your Powder Dry (1945) - Starring Lana Turner, Laraine Day, and Susan Peters
Three very different women try to adjust to their lives in the Womenâs Army Corps.Â
Why you should watch it: A lot of WWII films talk about men in the army. This film is one of two that I know of that talk about the women in the army. It is also interesting to see the three different women who have to tolerate each other in such close quarters. Also, I like seeing Lana Turner in a role that is not super dramatic and her being someoneâs love interest the whole film.Â
15. Too Bad Sheâs Bad (1955) - Starring Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio De SicaÂ
A young thief and her accomplices try to steal a cab driverâs cab. However, the cab driver, the thief, and her thieving family just canât seem to stay away from each other.
Why you should watch it: Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in a COMEDY? Yes, I will have seconds. I love their comedic timing together. Also, there are so many shenanigans in this film that are just fantastic to watch unravel.Â
Thank you FilmStruck for introducing me to so many films I wouldnât have had the access to if it werenât for you. Thank you to all of the talented people who worked so hard to create a truly unique experience for film lovers. I will miss FilmStruck so much.Â

When's the album coming out?
Ahh, musical specials. The episodes that *MUSICAL NUMBER* always *MUSICAL NUMBER* has *MUSICAL NUMBER* a song playing *MUSICAL NUMBER* .......every two or three minutes. While the songs are catchy, I find myself worn out by the end of them. Even more so when later episodes incorporate a random musical number just because (lookin at you, Bob's Burgers, as good of a show you are). Anywho, let's begin!
Not even 5 seconds in, and already we get a song. Luna just so happens be recording her own song to upload onto "America's Next Hitmaker" (oh, it's one of "those" shows. That checks out) in hopes of catching her big break in the music world. However, second thoughts begin to cloud her mind as she fears the world isn't gonna like her piece, causing her to back out until she has a song that really hooks people. Suddenly, the music bug infects her as Luna starts hearing the family breaking into songs up and down and all around. Between Lana's simplistic work ditty, Lola's sensational show tune, Lisa busting more rhymes than Parappa the Rappa did in his own anime (yep, that's a thing), Lori and Leni's slow jam duet (complete with a hint of Leni and Chaz shipteasing if I'm not mistaken), Luan's over the top Animaniacs-Tiny Toons-esque zany lyrics, Lucy's somber tones, Lynn's jock jams, the 'rents countrytime romance, and Clincoln McCloud's DDR techno beats, Luna is at a massive crossroads on what kind of song will wow the people. That worry subsides once a catchy and trendy pop song has everyone dancing all over the world (even the Casagrandes couldn't help but shake it), leaving Luna to believe that's what everyone wants to hear............I dunno about that.
*MUSICAL NUMBER*
So........many..........songs! Most of them where actually quite an earworm to me. I'd say Luan's wacky song was my favorite out of all the non-Luna songs. Had me clapping in awe. Of course, this "is" a Luna episode after all, so naturally she's got the spotlight. The songs performed by her were quite the musical treat. Seriously, Nika Futterman has an awesome voice, making each song have lots of passion and energy behind each lyric (can't help but be amazed, right?). I do have to mention Lori and Leni's duet, cause I got caught off guard by how good that was. However, the plot was the low point for me. It wasn't horrible "at all", but it's a standard plot for characters with a love for music. It works, though, and it ends well. All I can say is........this episode rocks alright.
Also, too bad Luna didn't make a Gorillaz reference. Oh well...
Not bad for a Black Friday musical special. Better than going shopping, that's for sure (no way I'm fist-fighting people just to buy stuff. I'll just watch the fights). Can't wait to catch more new episodes later on. I wonder how that "Racing Hearts" episode will turn out when it airs (hopefully it doesn't rush anything). In any case, until next time, Loud Crowd!

I would say Goodwin, Morrison, and Colin have the most star power. Again, just my opinion lol. All my friends who are GA and have caught it from time to time, all know those three. I would also say they have the most ahead of them too. Dallas and Mader are sort of in that mix in regards to tv if their pilots get picked up.
In my opinion, Josh and Bex have good TV series potential.Â
From the blurb I read on Bexâs sitcom, she seems really well cast. If she can keep herself from going âtoo bigâ and zany, I could see her knocking that out of the park (if itâs well written.) Â
Josh has âyears as a cop on a proceduralâ written all over him. (not saying that is what his current pilot is, just, you know, how I visualize his career.)Â
Lana I see playing someone's over-sexed bitchy mother either in a comedy or drama. Though today she was apparently campaigning to play a lawyer on HTGAWM.
RC is a character actor and will always be a character actor.
Emilie... Emilie... Emilie. Iâd say I donât expect to see much of her, but I watched Roswell. And I would have said the same thing after that show, (she was so bad on it) however, after that she continued to book series regular gigs on high profile network shows, so what do I know? Â
