So I dragged myself kicking and screaming and, yes, mostly in denial, through the last episodes of A Journey to Love.

My thoughts can be summarized as follows:

Obviously this is mainly due to me being horrifically traumatized by Yuan Lu’s death. After all, they told us from the get go he wouldn’t live to 20. They made it clear he had a deadly heart disease. And then. They had the nerve. They had the audacity. They had the actual fucking bahoonga BALLS to follow through!?

But then I found myself sobbing at literally every good guy death scene, plus all of the mourning scenes. The latter was in large part thanks to Alen Fang's acting - deepest apologies to him for just referring to his character as 'the slutty one' for the majority of the show. Not that I was wrong. Also thanks to strong performances from He Lan Dou for Yuan Lu's death.

Anyway so I need to add this gif x4 for the Liudao Hall babies:

Qian Zhao, da ge, who made mistakes but always did right in the end

Sun Lang, who just wanted to hold something fluffy at the end, dying a hero

Yuan Lu, who died in his princess's arms after running to deliver a letter rendered useless by the Emperor of An's greed.

Yu Shisan, who lived as he lived and had such a happy moment with Chu Yue right before it all became irrevocable.

When they added Yu Shisan to the snowball fight, I just about lost it. Liu Yuning's acting there - having the realization about Shisan's death as he watched them play in real time was so well done. Really hurt.

Plus I'll make a couple of versions with edits.

For the Wu Emperor. I knew it was gonna happen from the spoilers but damn, him genuinely learning the value of friendship and brotherly love made me root for him. Dude did not deserve to go out like that. Thank goodness for the magic of CDramas where he lived just long enough to pass on his will to Ning Yuanzhou, and do one last act of good.

It also ensured Duke of Chu was able to pass on his command to his daughter, Chu Yue, before dying of the same (was not clear if her bro died or not, or if dad was always going to choose her).

And for Deng Hui. Started out thinking he was just a sexist bastard. Turns out he was one of the most principled characters in the show.

Their deaths didn't make me cry, but I respect them.

Also loved Chen Du Ling's (Empress of Wu) small part in this. I may not like all of her characters but she can deliver a scene and hold a room. It was a bit cathartic to see her put every man in their place, and basically decide the fate of two countries, even though her lament that she'd only ever have power through another held true.

Ah Ying, my baby girl. This is a character that could have turned people off from the beginning. Thanks to strong writing and stronger acting, it did not. I was super impressed with He Lan Dou. She can dial it up and dial it down in a single take, and can play big dramatic scenes with a subtlety that some older actors cannot grasp. This was the first thing I've seen her in, though for her and Chen You Wei (Yuan Lu) I might watch Tiger and Crane if someone tells me it's good.

I still think Li Tongguang is a perverted and creepy child, who never managed to learn (except in literally the last ep), but at least I trust that he will treat Ah Ying well. I don't hold it against him for screwing up the battle - he was trying to be benevolent but made a bad choice.

The main couple win it for me this year. What an inspired pairing. They beat out heavy hitters including Bai Lu x Everyone which was near impossible. Something to do with letting Liu Shi Shi use Liu Yuning's height against him at every possible moment. Also the 'if you die, I'll finish the job and then follow you' is my favorite dynamic. I swear when Ruyi threw those bombs, NOT NEEDING TO HAVING ALREADY SUCCEEDED AT KILLING THE KING AND PRINCE, just to join him, y'all I died. Good for whoever posthumously gave her the Marquis title on her own (not just furen) - couldn't tell if it was Li Tongguang acting as regent or Dayang (great shot of those two at the end).

The final episode was one of the best final cdrama episodes I've seen. I might have to make another post about that. In sum, despite losing a large portion of the well-loved cast, the remainder gave a world-class finale. The visuals were incredible (explosions are my favorite). The final scene was beautiful (though I'm a bit surprised they gave it to Chu Yue instead of Ah Ying who knew all 6 of them closely).

I’ll Walk This Life with You

@ruensroad - you had requested a Sizhen wedding scene! Well here it is :D I put it in my arranged marriage au, A Love That is Mine. I wanted it to be different and I hope that you like it! ♥

"All done, Senior Lan." A-Yue informed him cheerfully. A bright smile on his face as he continued to gently cup his foot showing him the painted design on the top of his foot. The golden design glimmered by the candle light. 

"Well done, A-Yue." Lan Sizhui praised, just as there was a knock on the door. A-Yue's smile now beaming brighter than the sun at his words. He slowly lowered his foot before standing up to answer the door. 

"It's ready now!" A-Fang exclaimed proudly with two of the tailors staff behind him carrying a rather long box. After they were inside, he ushered the staff to remove Lan Sizhui’s outer wedding robe from the box and hang it on the rack for his charge to see. 

Lan Sizhui didn't know what he was expecting but this wasn't it. He knew from the arrangements that this wasn't going to be the gold, white, and red splendor of A-Ling and A-Yi's wedding. That much had been discovered between the wedding preparations. No, their wedding was to be full of vibrant jewel colors. The ones that are seen in the natural beauty that is Baling and with Ouyang Zizhen’s insistence the colors of Gusu Lan. 

He let out a soft gasp as he took in the sight of the beautiful robe before him. The heavy ultramarine dyed silk was embroidered with a tree from the trailing hemline to the middle of the back. Shimmering brown beaded design for the trunk of the tree and different shades of light green to dark for the trees. In between the shoulders is a glistening golden sun with opalescent clouds surrounding it. 

Lan Sizhui stood up, holding himself at the collar of his inner robe as he crossed the room to the rack. His vision blurring from the tears threatening to spill over. He reached out gently running his fingers over the sun. The memories of his childhood coming back to him. His mother's smile and his birth father's laugh. 

Lan Sizhui felt an ache in his chest that was a mixture of sadness and love. His robe was a design that Ouyang Zizhen had come up with himself. It'd meant that he'd wanted them there with them today. Lan Sizhui smiled happily that he was so fortunate to have the man as his future husband. 

"Senior Lan?" A-Yue called to him stepping up beside him. "Are you alright?"

"Yes, I am. I'm sorry." Lan Sizhui answered, giving him a reassuring smile. 

"Then let's get this on you before your, Master Wei or Hanguang-jun come to get you." A-Fang stated as he and A-Yue went to take the robe off the rack. 

Lan Sizhui merely nodded as he allowed for the two disciples to assist him in getting the outer robe on. The silk glided easily over the gold gossamer thin inner robe, fitting him like a glove. A-Fang was working on fixing the golden sash with the tree embroidered on it as well with opalescent threaded clouds when there was a knock on the door.

Lan Sizhui nodded to A-Yue, who went to go answer the door. A-Yue barely had the door open when his baba’s head popped in. Today, Wei Wuxian was wearing his personal set of Lan formal robes that complimented his fuqin’s, along with his marriage ribbon that he only wears on special occasions. 

“My little Radish, are you ready? They are getting-” Wei Wuxian asked, his eyes going wide at the sight of him. His back still facing the doorway allowing his baba to get a good look at his marriage robe. 

“Oh, Radish.” Wei Wuxian muttered as a sappy smile spread across his face. A-Yue moved to allow him to step fully inside. His pristine white robes fluttering around him as he walks towards his son. “Let me look at you.”

As Wei Wuxian circles around him. A-Fang moved out of the way, towards the vanity. On the vanity, a burgundy pillow has two veils: one of gold and the other of ultramarine. He picks up the gold to match the accents of the inner robe. Wei Wuxian comes to a stop in front of his son. The two of them share a look of mutual happiness as A-Fang puts the veil on him. The tree-like design of the head piece makes the soft fabric lay like a mist over him.

“You look ready, Radish.” Wei Wuxian says, offering him his arm. 

“I’m ready.” Lan Sizhui answered with a soft nod, and a small smile at the way his baba was trying not to tear up as he took the offered arm. A-Yue and A-Fang opened the doors revealing a thick layer of lotus leaves with lanterns on the sides outlining the way to his wedding altar.  Lan Sizhui gave his baba one last look before taking the first step towards his future. 

Ouyang Zizhen stood straight with a smile on his face but his eyes were up at the beautiful night’s sky. The moon and the stars, waiting to bear witness to his and Lan Sizhui’s union. That is if the beautiful man would ever come. Ouyang Zizhen was starting to get nervous. His gaze drifting over to his sworn brothers, Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi as almost an hour passed by with them waiting for Lan Sizhui. Now he knew that logically he didn’t need to worry because if something was wrong then they’d have informed him. But that didn’t stop him from giving Jin Ling a look of go see what’s going on. Jin Ling nodded and was about to get up from where he was sitting amongst his family when suddenly the sanxians started playing announcing that Lan Sizhui was now walking the path to their wedding altar. He let out an inaudible sigh of relief as he waited. 

They finally made their way to the courtyard of the altar. Lan Sizhui took a shallow breath to try to calm his racing heart as he finally was able to see Ouyang Zizhen for the first time all day. The man looked handsome in his own ultramarine colored robes and his hair pulled up into a high ponytail with the matching tree head piece for the one in Lan Sizhui’s hair. 

“Now, don’t be nervous, radish.” Wei Wuxian whispered low enough that only Lan Sizhui could hear as they now started passing the seated sect leaders and their disciples, Lan Sizhui’s family and their sect disciples, and Ouyang Zizhen’s own family and sect disciples. 

“I’m not baba.” Lan Sizhui replied, trying to reassure the other because it was true. He wasn’t nervous. He was so happy that this moment was finally happening. He was getting the happily ever after he’d wanted as a child all those years ago back in Yiling before his life as a Lan. 

“Raddish, your hand is shaking.” Wei Wuxian countered. 

“I’m just ready to be there with him.” Lan Sizhui explained tightening his grip a bit making Wei Wuxian smile brighter. Out of the corner of his eye he was able to spot the smiles on his uncles faces. He caught the wet look in Lan Xichen’s eyes making his heart swell. 

Lan Jingyi was fairing far worse than his bobo in his seat beside Jin Ling at the sight of him. Thankfully, Jin Ling knew how to keep him from getting dramatic. A wink from Jin Ling let him know that Lan Jingyi was alright. The two of him seeing him get married reminded him of how thrilled he was for them during their own wedding. 

He’d kept his composure together the best until he’d seen the look on his fuqin’s face. It was a look filled with fierce pride and love and he felt his eyes sting from tears threatening to fall. He knew that his fuqin was proud of him and that he was loved but today it just resounded even more in his heart. He slowly let out a sigh of happy relief careful to keep his veil from lifting as they finally approached the altar. The music that’d been playing fading to silence. 

The two of them stopped at the one step up onto the altar as Ouyang Zizhen moved to stand before them. Ouyang Zizhen stretched out his hand for Lan Sizhui’s exposing the edge of  Lan Sizhui’s forehead ribbon that he’d wrapped around that wrist the night before. Wei Wuxian gently raised his son’s hand carefully lifting it from his arm placing the palm in Ouyang Zizhen’s. Lan Sizhui could see his soon to be husband’s lips part slightly as his eyes filled with awe at the sight of him. 

“This night, I give to you my son, Lan Sizhui of Gusu Lan Sect, to walk the rest of this life with you.” Wei Wuxian stated boldly.

“This night, I, Ouyang Zizhen of Baling Ouyang Sect, accept your son, Lan Sizhui of Gusu Lan Sect to join me in starting our walk of life together.” Ouyang Zizhen replied, his dark eyes never leaving Lan Sizhui’s storm colored ones. The sight of the beautiful man in their joined sect colors made him so happy he could barely stand it followed by the wave of want that always flooded his veins at the sight of him. 

Wei Wuxian stepped away as Ouyang Zizhen took a step back helping Lan Sizhui onto the altar. Lan Sizhui took in the sight of the round low table with the golden tiers filled offerings to the heavens to bless their union. The two of them share a look as they begin to walk around the offerings table. 

“I, Ouyang Zizhen of Baling Ouyang Sect, start our walk of life together so that we may always grow and cherish one another. That as we share our lives together that we share our strengths and be of one mind.” Ouyang Zizhen says, leading them in their joint walk. 

“I, Lan Sizhui Gusu Lan Sect, join in our walk of life together so that we may always grow and cherish one another. That as we share our lives together that we share our strengths and be of one mind.”  Lan Sizhui said as they rounded the table again with Lan Sizhui changing to taking the lead. 

“Together as one, we will walk this life and may it be pleasing unto the heavens.” The two of them said in union as they rounded the table side by side. As they finished they walked to the front of the altar where both of their friends, family, fellow sect members, and other sects with their disciples could see them. Behind them Ouyang Zizhen’s father announced them as being married then the two of them took their first step together being married off the altar.
