Literary Canon (from kissgrammar)
The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version [At a minimum, the books of Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, from the Old Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Apocalypse from the New.] Whether or not you are Christian is irrelevant. The civilization in which we live is based on and permeated by the ideas and values expressed in this book. Understanding our civilization, the world in which we live, is probably impossible without having read -- and thought about -- at least the most famous books in the Bible. Historically, the King James Version is considered the most artistic, and thus has probably had the most literary influence.
Homer, The Iliad

Sophocles, Oedipus the King (Oedipus Rex)

When i see Apple White with Raven Queen or even Raven Queen with Madeline Hatter i was stop thinking about Once Upon a Time when i watched only two First seasons because One i see Mary Margaret and Regina Mills since they First meets in the episode 18 from season One and then One episode before we see Regina Mills that She want the help of Mad Hatter to search her father in Wonderland and even She didn't notice that her mother Cora was disguised as Queen of Heart since She sent her in episode 2 from Once Upon a Time season two when She won't to marry Snow White's father After Daniel's death.......
But now i realize that It was Peter Pan's fault because the Blue Fairy see that Rumpelstilskin was taking from his parents Peter Pan and Fiona the Black Fairy and It that because She tried to help Bealfire to convince Rumpelstilskin to return in London. That's Rumpelstilskin did It with the Fairy of Cinderella in the episode 4 from Once Upon a Time, was a truly meaning because of his parents and even that episode predicted the future of Henry Mills that he will marry Cinderella and they will have Lucy and together they will fight against Lady Rapunzel Tremaine and Mother Gothel transforming them into a tree in the Last season of Once Upon a Time. But if Alice was young in Once Upon a Time season One with Henry Mills, and meeting the Mad Hatter and made him compassion without to see the presence of Cora in Wonderland, did Alice and Peter Pan knowed each other before the spells and the events of Once Upon a Time? And because Alice and Peter Pan were from London and Alice in Wonderland was created by Lewis Carroll in 1865 and Peter Pan was created by James Barrie in 1904.

It was intresting to read your opinions about ouat, soo can u maybe do Regina Mills also? 🫶🏻 (+ I gotta say that I agree what you said about hook)
I am glad you asked, Nonny, because I felt sliughtly guilty. I answered the "choose between Emma and Regina" ask and chose Emma, BEFORE I answered the "choose from these three SVU" characters and in that one I did all three.
I was like "Man, I should have done Regina as well". So, Nonny,. great minds think alike. :D
REGINA MILLS:
Tumblr media
Before we start, I had to use this gif, because for over a decade it was my AO3 profile pic "Bitch Fucked With My Apples", until I changed it to Sheryl Crow to match my tumblr pic.
Onto the questions!
--> How I feel about this character:
I do so love Regina. Not as much as Emma, and I am not attracted to Regina the way I am Emma, but I love her just the same.
Her entire story is one of tragedy. All she wanted was to be good, to be left alone with her horse and her stable boy and maybe an apple tree.
And she was used and abused by everyone around her for their own nefarious purposes. Her mother abused her from childhood and then sold her as a young teenager to an uncaring king. Who, let's be real Disney, was not just "looking for a mother for Snow". He wanted a young wife to bed. And she was NOT WILLING.
Rumple came along and twisted her helplessness into vengeance.
And the world called her Evil.
And even then, exactly how evil was she. Okay, sure, if you're Snow White (or one of her friends), she was pretty lethal, and she did slaughter an entire village for hiding Snow. But apart from Snow, she was pretty non chalant. She wanted to be loved as a ruler.
Yes, she did EVIL things, but she was a pawn and she didn't choose that title, nor that life.
The curse? The big Curse to End All Curses?
She bought them to Maine and gave them safety, steady jobs, no inflation at all 80s prices forever more, running water, electricity, medicine, instant college educations.
And all those ungrateful bitches wanted to do was return to shitting in the forest and hunting their dinner amidst dying of dystentery and a random arrow.
Like, come on. If you really want to be evil, don't make Snow a goddamn grade school teacher who builds bird houses. OH LOOK,, there's Mary Margaret the garbage collector. Mary Margaret, the local stripper. The homeless drug addict. Locked up in a nuthouse. A maid. Anything, but a sweet, comfortable, happy, well fed teacher who still smiles and sings.
I said it in the other post, I'll say it here. Emma internalised her pain and sabotaged herself. Regina externalised it and hurt those around her. But it all stems from that lost, lonely little girl that was abused and had all her hopes dashed, that was never loved the way they deserved.
I do love Regina and that is all (Ha!) I am saying until further down.
--> All the people I ship romantically with this character:
(I love how this is worded: 1. "romantically", like... definitely not just "fuck nasty" buddies, but romance. 2. "People" with a "Character", ... can I name just any random person? Like, let's get Regina Mills together with Susan Sarandon. Let's go!)
Ahem.
Emma Swan, obviously. You can't really ask for more. They were perfect for each other. There are so many parallels in their stories, and they helped each other grow. They cared sincerely for each other. This is a no brainer.
But also... let's not rule out all the other ladies, Snow, Ruby, Belle. Maybe a little Jefferson. Daniel (for the hopeless teen romantic Regina). David for a little bit.
Imaginary Regina is quite the machine.
--> My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Is Henry too obvious? Come on.
Snow eventually. Zelena eventually, Kathryn to begin with (you know, before she had her kidnapped and killed and then unkilled, that kinda takes the bloom off the rose a little).
--> My unpopular opinion of this character:
The Lana stans ruined Regina for me*. I can't enjoy her as much as I would like, because... they're very rabid and they oversaturated the internet and a lot of them became Swan Queen fans, but a very specific sort of Swan Queen fan wherein it was obvious they were just there for Regina and they really hated Emma in an ugly way.
I think Lana is really great, everything I have heard about her is good. That said, i just can't... I can't really enjoy anything in terms of Lana because of her fans. So, I just steer well away.
These people and their zealotry ruined the actress and the character and that's tragic all in its own.
(*I am speaking of a very certain sort of fan, I am sure a lot of Lana fans are great, but we all know who I am speaking of).
Fandom overall became very Regina Centric or Hook Centric, to the exclusion of all else. This bled heavily into the viciousness of Swan Queen Vs Captain Swan... but I stayed out of it and just wrote my little fics and read others.
-->One thing I wish would happen/had happened for this character:
I'm not sure I can answer this question, because I still to this day have not finished watches S7 all the way through. I have watched MAYBE three episodes and then have to stop, I just... cannot get into it. So I don't really *know* what happened to her.
I know she got a very short haircut, wore singlet shirts, and ran a bar. That's what I know. So... I mean, maybe that made her happy? Chase your dreams, I guess.
Obviously "I wish Swan Queen became canon".
Oooh, I know. I wish she had gotten some justice, especially against Rumple.
(but, oh no, Rumple was a MAN and had to have a giant redemption arc and become woobified)
My old AO3 pp for reference:

I was probably not gonna talk about my OUAT/DC AU were Emma is adopted by Bruce and becomes his first child/sideckick (witch in retrospect would likely improve Dick and Bruce's relationship at leaat a bit) because I just didn't like what I had planned and didn't have any better ideas. Until today more than one year later and out of nowhere I got two really good ideas:
1. Lilith. The thing is Lilith meeting Emma had to happen, they are soul-bond, is inevitable. And hey Lilith family are rich uncary people and the Waynes are rich. So this time instead of shoplifting Lilith meets Emma at 13, after Emma runs away because she thinks Bruce adopting Dick means he doesn't want her anymore (she knows it is unfair, she saw his parents die at the circus but she was abandoned to many times for the new younger kid).
Now normally Bruce would have found her already but it was the same day 10yo Dick Grayson runned away to kill Tony Zucco. And at least Emma knew how to protect herself. So she asked Babs to find her bestie and went to stop his newly acquired child from dying.
But these are the details. And details are nice. But the idea itself it's the thing: inspired by Emma by the end of their friendship Lilith decides to run away thinking it is easy. Emma thinks she suceeded in stopping her but after they big fight (in this universe because Lilith putted Dick in danger and if Dick wasn't Robin - I thing Lilith doesn't know, he would have died) Lilith decides to run away because fuck Emma that's why.
Now there is someone who has a soft spot for eager to learn, evil, lonley childrem who terrorize others and my headcannon that Lilith dragon biology makes her resistant to substances like alcohol, smilex... fear toxin. Yeah. Emma is a Wayne and Lilith is a Crane (Jonathan preffers the term apprendice)
Now this creates a new interresting connection between them but also a new flavour for their prexisting one. Can you imagine how complicated Regina and Emma's field trip would be? But more important Maleficent having the extra step of not only having to bond with her now adult lost daugther but learn how to co-parent with the "Master of Fear".
2. My other and favorite hc was: if Emma is raised by Bruce even if she gets pregnant too young, she would not be in jail and would have a support system and money. Now my first idea was to give Emma and Bruce a falling out. But that's a cope out. And I wanted to write "good parent Bruce" and that means that even if they fought Bruce wouldn't let his teen daugther on the streets.
In this timeline Emma still date Neal - Bruce didn't knew - and got pregnant but she kept Henry (except his middle name is Jason instead of Daniel). So who is the kid Regina adopts?
Damian. Now in Damian's debut story Talia did pretend to have had an unplanned abortion and gabe Damian to adoption. I am changing her motives: Jason had just died and Bruce just got Tim and Talia knew he wouldn't stop and Ra keept talking about an heir and Talia might be loyal but she is self aware and she wants the best for her son so she pretends she lost the baby and gave him to adoption. Her plan was to fake her own death, move and adopt her son back (and get money as a mercenary). She had contacts and bribes to stop her kid from being adopted and eyes everwhere to trail him and update her. Bur somehow it wasn't enough.
Someone got her baby and disapeared of the face of earth (Storybrook is hard to find) and after ten years trying to find him and failing. She decides to tell Emma. She doesn't want to tell Bruce that their child isn't dead and she lied and she is afraid one of her father spys pick up on the news about his heir surviving. And since Emma is the best member of the batfam in finding people and a mother herself can help Talia (that at this point only wants to know if her son is happy and well).
Also Damian Mills (Talia named him before giving him to adoption is aware of the fairy tale bs and that he is different than Henry in strategies.

regina mills & unconditional love
no but guys regina mills did not know what it was like to be unconditionally loved until emma swan. i’m not even being dramatic here - i mean maybe this is a reach but it is mostly true whichever way you look at it and i’m going to back myself up.
even if people did love regina unconditionally before, that is not how regina would have felt and understood it.
cora mills could have loved her daughter had she opted to keep her heart, but she did not. she chose power over love, and chose to ‘protect’ herself from her feelings, which could have prevented her from being brutal enough to use regina in the way she always knew she would have to. she did this before regina was even born. (what also hurts me about this is that cora did not have her heart when she was pregnant with regina, so literal fetus regina would not have been soothed by a mothers heartbeat - only silence.)
baby regina knew mothers were supposed to love their children, and she certainly knew her mother said she did - with a stroke of the hair, to manipulate her into doing something. (’you know how much i love you darling, i just want what’s best for you.’) or to excuse her actions after a particularly harsh punishment. (’i only have to hurt you because i love you, regina - it’s a mother’s job to ensure her daughter suceeds.’) what little love regina thought she felt was always conditional. affection - physical, emotional or otherwise - was a reward for obedience, to be withheld and used as cora saw fit. and poor tiny regina only wanted to please her mother, only wanted to be good, and craved those hard-won moments of affection. (what did this teach her? that love was a reward, to be earned through obedience. that to ‘be good’ was to be worthy of love - and she was not inherently either.)
and then we have henry sr, who i believe loved his daughter immensely and in his eyes, probably unconditionally - after all, who else stuck by her side even in the depths of her darkness - but to a young regina whose definition and understanding of love came from cora and her abuse tactics... well, daddy loved her and snuck into her locked room for comfort and cuddles when he could after cora would punish her, but he never stopped the punishment. he made her feel better afterwards, but he stood aside and let every single thing happen to her. so tiny regina once again was taught she deserved it, that it was okay, it was the consequences of her actions. that she needed to be better. if she really was inherently worthy - if she really didn’t deserve it - daddy would protect her, surely. but he never did.
and then we have daniel - sweet, kind, honest daniel who knew nothing dark about love and loved her as freely as he could. loved her for who she was, not what she could do for him. and yes, he probably was the most unconditional love she’d ever known - but it was love between children and he was murdered before long. so then regina has to wonder, once again, if she is worthy of love at all. or if it truly is just weakness.
(nobody protects her from king leopold. he doesn’t love her at all, barely even tolerates her at times, but he enjoys her youth and her beauty and her body and her presence at his events, even if he prefers she stay silent at them. at court, regina is a decoration. friendless, alone.
princess snow white, yes, she loves her. she loved her from the moment she pulled her from her runaway horse, this beautiful heroic girl who taught her about love and magic and courage. but snow is so young, and knows nothing but what her parents told her, and regina is sure she would not love her if she knew everything. regina is sure snow only loves her as a replacement mother, as a living doll for her to play with whenever she wants, to distract her from harsh realities and history lessons, to teach her about horses, to do her hair. if regina were to be herself, to leave, she thinks this poor child would soon hate her.)
rumplestiltskin, well, he has affection for her for sure after some time - and maybe before too, through his visions, through his love for her mother, his paternal instincts and his affinity for broken things - but she is only ever really a tool for him, a means to an end. she is his revenge and his redemption. his curse caster. and if she couldn’t do that, well, he would have to drop her and move on. and regina knows this. deep down, regina has always known this.
maleficent, well - that was something like love once, maybe - lust and comfort escapism and alcohol all wrapped up in one, but they never let themselves be in love, not really, not as much as both of them perhaps could have been. external circumstances were too much.
and then henry - another spanner in the works because of course children love their parents unconditionally - but then one day he doesn’t. one day her little prince, who showed her what pure, real love really was, comes home from school with a book and tells her she’s not his real mom, and then one day he tells her she’s evil and just like everybody else, she herself is not worthy of his love. (of course, he is just a child and doesn’t understand his big conflicting emotions but for regina, this is just another step in a long, solid pattern. and her heart is broken.) as she slowly grows and goes down the long path of redemption, she wins his love back - realises she never really lost it - but of course, that pattern of thinking in her head is confirmed even more if anything. she is good now, she is trying to be a hero, and so her son loves her. if she stops, maybe he won’t again. there are conditions, like there always has been)
even robin, her supposed soulmate, she knows would not love her if she were not the hero, and even then, he has to prioritize his first family over her. snow starts to love her again - she never really stopped, only now she loves her deeply and with understanding and complexity, loves her fully, as a friend, an equal, a human being - and so do the others, but regina deep down knows they love her because she is being ‘good’ or trying hard to be.
because love for her is conditional, always conditional.
and then there is emma swan.
who throws her own soul into the darkness without a second thought, just to save regina’s life.
who protects her, defends her, speaks out for her when nobody else does. when she’s ‘bad’. who believes in her and treats her like an equal even when regina is sure she’s not. regina does not have to earn emma’s friendship and protection - emma guards her and looks out for her beyond all reason. regina could be throwing a fireball or threatening a friend and emma will only pull her away with a whispered word or conjure her own magic to help. emma tries to send her home and protect her from the underworld, even before regina has done anything to help her. emma wakes herself up from a curse and regains all her memories in a split second just to save regina, even when she’s not herself and she thinks regina is just the evil queen.
emma swan is the first person who genuinely looks out for regina with no ulterior motive or exchange of power, the first person who regina cannot rationalise a method of keeping on her side - because emma is just on her side, regardless of what she does, how badly she messes up, how emotional and messy she feels.
regina is shocked by it, she doesn’t understand it. nobody has treated her like emma does. nobody has ever put her first like that. nobody has ever expected nothing from her in return.
but gradually - once they get through all the denial and questioning and yearning and get together - emma begins to show regina just how worthy of love she is, despite everything she’s ever been taught. it shakes regina’s whole view of the world and herself, and some days she finds it hard to believe, but gradually, eventually, she does. because after all, she loves emma unconditionally, too, doesn’t she?
(she loves most people in her life unconditionally. she always has. so why shouldn’t she receive that in return?)

Note
We’ll be watching Gregory and Hyacinth growing up in this series and whilst I’m excited for their plotline, it’ll be weird, if you know what I mean.
It’s one thing reading it but another thing seeing it.
Oh sweet summer child.
The media also watched Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson grow up on screen in Harry Potter and that didn’t stop cameras and their fans from sexualizing them even before they came of age.
Same with the majority of the underage cast members of Game of Thrones.
Florence is extremely beautiful, so I imagine that like other young actresses on a big budget series, she will take advantage of all the teen roles she can get while she’s in the Young Hollywood age bracket. Hopefully she won’t be sexualized as much as say, Millie Bobby Brown or Emma Watson, but I doubt it. There’s also a possibility that her season will be blended with Gregory’s since their books are the books who will finish the series.
Fun note, in the case of Gregory and Will Tilston. The closest example I can find of watching a boy like him grow up on screen, is Jared Gilmore who began playing Henry Mills in Once Upon a Time when he was around 10. If you want to check out how the progression of Gregory growing up on screen will probably look like, check out Henry Mills trough all the 7 seasons of Once Upon a Time, Right now Jared Gilmore is 21, google his picture. I dare you.
And now that we are touching on child actors I kinda wish that Netflix would cast Scarlett Estevez (Trixie from Lucifer) as Lucy Abernathy, I follow her on TikTok she’s adorable. If it turns out that we don’t get a Gregory season after all. I’d love to see teenage Gregory and Lucy having a mini highschool version of their book’s plotline for two or three eps. Even if we don’t get to see them as adults after all. Scarlett Estevez and Will Tilston are more or less the same age and she looks exactly how I imagine a young Latina Lucy would look.
Unlike ‘it’s in his kiss’ Gregory’s book, had less sexual content and could easily be adapted to a short teenage rom com storyline and I’d love to see it. Or Maybe I just want to see Lucy somewhere around Mayfair! It’s so frustrating I don’t want to wait so much.
And that’s the tea

The Unsolved Murder of Henry “Brute” Hanlon and the Box Boy Killer

I’m back, r/LetsTalkTrueCrime! I really appreciated the questions and discussion under my last write-up, and a few of you really encouraged me to keep working to provide a part two to my Serial Killer Box Boy series, so here it is!
In Part One, we looked at the mysterious death of Nathaniel “Nanda” Benson, who died of cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart defect (and likely head trauma played a part) and was found at the bottom of the stairs inside his California home. The only valuable possession missing from his property was his legally-purchased Box Boy, who fled the city wearing Nathaniel Benson’s shoes and using his money to buy a bus and then train ticket.
The last confirmed sighting of the runaway Box Boy (and Benson’s possible killer?) was in Red Hills, California, a large-ish city a couple hours south of Benson’s house by train.
Questions remain around Benson’s death: did he suffer cardiac arrest and fall down the stairs? Did the Box Boy push him, with the shock of the trauma and injury leading to the heart attack that killed him?
Is the Box Boy merely a witness to a tragic but natural death, or the prime murder suspect?
And most importantly: If he wasn’t guilty, why did he run?
Less than a full calendar year after Benson’s death, the question of where the Boxie went after Benson died was answered… but even that answer only opened up more questions, and the sudden death of a second man places even more uncertainty into the story of a Boxie who might simply be an innocent victim - or who could be a serial killer whose makes a victim out of those who give him shelter.
Which leads us to the story of Henry James Hanlon, known to nearly everyone - including his wife - as “Brute”.
Henry Hanlon was born in a small town in Texas, but moved to Red Hills, California after finishing a stint in the Air Force.
His parents, James Hanlon and Estella Hanlon, maiden name Brickers, had had their first child, Henry’s older brother William “Bill”, right out of high school, born six months after their wedding day. Henry came three years later, and his sister Roberta “Bobbie” one year after that.
Henry was a perfectly normal, cheerful little boy, always toddling after his older brother and trying to join in the games of the older kids in town. His parents recalled him as the quintessential “middle child”, always resolving disputes and quietly getting things done. He received his nickname of “Brute” in fifth grade, when a classroom bully was harassing a female friend of Henry’s and Henry decided to take action. The only information I could really hunt down on this was some old school records that I found on a message board, and I can’t really verify if they’re real, but they suggest that the bully was sent home injured and Henry received a three-day suspension.
After that, it seems, anyone and everyone - even teachers - called Henry Hanlon “Brute”, and he never seemed to mind.
He received perfectly average grades, enlisted in the Air Force, served without distinction but without any significant incidents, and afterwards he moved out to California, where he settled into Red Hills (then a city with a thriving industrial district that was slowly beginning its slide into something rougher) and took a job with a manufacturing company, working in their warehouse.
“Brute” dated around a bit, but it wasn’t until three years after his move that he met the woman he would marry, Ellen Patricia Barry. She was a few years younger than him, and they met at a local bar that both were known to frequent. One of Brute’s former coworkers told police that Brute was big into pool and poker, both of which he would engage in when he went to the bar, and that he met Ellen during one of the poker nights, and that Brute stated that how easily she beat him was one of the reasons he was interested in her romantically.
Ellen claims they first spoke while playing pool, not poker, and also claims she’s never played poker in her life. Why Brute would have told his coworkers a different story is unclear.
They dated for about a year before they wed at Grace Baptist Church on a sunny summer day in 20XX. Ellen’s father gave her away while Brute’s little sister was the maid of honor. A year later, Brute’s daughter Elizabeth was born, and a couple years after that, their son Daniel.
The Hanlons lived a charmed life - they owned a cute three-bedroom cottage home (bought and given to them by Ellen’s parents as a wedding gift) in a good part of town with a little white fence around the property and a yard big enough for the children and dog to play in. Ellen was part of the local PTA and active in her church, and Brute himself had the appearance of a man totally content with everything he had.
But Brute Hanlon had a secret.
Ellen continued to believe he was employed by the manufacturing company, but he actually left his employment there years before his death. Instead, he seems to have transitioned into making his money “under the table”. Ellen wouldn’t discover any of this until after his body was located… in a secret house he’d never told her about, in one of the roughest parts of Red Hills.
Without her knowledge, Brute purchased a two-bedroom home with cash directly from its previous owner that was badly in need of repair in the Pauls Mill neighborhood. Once a “company town” from the 1930’s - 1950’s that was absorbed into Red Hills as it grew in the 60’s, Pauls Mill today is the kind of neighborhood where everyone knows if you belong there, or don’t, and it’s best if you belong.
Brute performed a few very cursory repairs to keep it livable, laid down some new carpet, and then used it as a kind of secret base for the unsavory activities he didn’t want Ellen or the children to know about.
While his family believed he was at work at the factory, Hanlon was in fact hosting poker games, selling illicit narcotics and unlicensed firearms, and generally making quite a bit more money than he had with legal employment entirely under-the-table. He would spend his day making connections (and money) through these activities, then go home right at 5 pm sharp to his loving family, eat dinner at 6 pm, help his kids with their homework and hear about their day, and settle in for an evening playing the loving husband and doting dad.
Somewhere during this time period, Brute told Ellen he was setting up a “poker night” with his friends again, now that the kids were school-aged.
What he did instead was drive down to the corner of Holt and McCormick streets, known to all locals as the Red Hills “red light district”, and pick up prostitutes, usually simply meeting with them in his car, but occasionally taking them to a nearby motel.
After his body was found, police showed his picture around to a variety of the individuals who make their living at Holt and McCormick, and more than a dozen locals immediately recognized him.
Some described him as a regular customer who wasn’t particularly special or notable beyond the simple fact that he never tried to renege on payment and could be relied on to always be looking for someone on a particular night of the week… but others, almost entirely male, said he could be violent. A few described being injured enough that they had to seek medical treatment after meeting him. The same individuals stated that he insisted on using dehumanizing and insulting language to speak to them during these encounters, and that he was often unable to perform unless he did so.
One individual, who gave his name as “Mix”, mentioned that the last few times Brute had engaged his services, he had brought along a collar and insisted Mix pretend to be a Box Boy.
During this time period, Brute continued to be an active, involved, and loving parent.
He was home right on time every night except “poker night”, attended his chlidrens’ recitals and baseball games on the weekends. He often took them to the Red Hills Zoo, local parks, and even did a weekend trip to Berras to see the Berras Aquarium, stay overnight in a hotel as a family, and then visit a redwoods park before returning home.
Six months before his death, Brute’s visits to the red light district abruptly stopped. Instead, he apparently met with a local prostitute, engaged his services, and took him home… for good.
The best record we have is that one woman, Needie Brandt, remembered seeing Brute leading a shorter, angular young man to his car one night, and described the young man as “one of those runaway Boxies, collar and all. Poor thing was half-starved”.
Runaways, especially Romantics, are picked up by police from time to time in Red Hills. Most Romantics don’t really know any other way to survive, so prostitution is a common way to make ends meet. Needie said the young man had been seen around the area for a couple of weeks, right alongside the rest of the working people in the red light district, and that after this one night she saw Brute Hanlon lead him into the car, she didn’t see him again.
Asked if she remembered a name, Needie only shrugged and said that even if she did, it wouldn’t be a real one. Which is probably a good point.
Somewhere in here, Brute began to date outside of his marriage while his family believed he was out with friends playing poker. He took dancing lessons with one Susan Krieger, had a serious relationship with a Lucy Graham, and was apparently occasionally taking a Natalie Dorn out for dinner.
Ellen was never informed about these out-of-wedlock interests.
Brute’s family knew nothing. When his eldest son went to state with marching band his freshman year of high school, Brute Hanlon was right there cheering him on.
Then, just two days later, he presumably went right back to brutalizing the Box Boy he was keeping in his secret second home.
We don’t have a record of what exactly transpired within the house after Brute took the runaway Box Boy in. What we do know is what the police found later on.
On October 18th, 20XX, around midnight, Ellen Hanlon called police to report her husband missing after he did not return from his regular poker night. His car was located in the parking lot of an abandoned FoodMart, but a friend of Brute’s came forward to say he often parked there and carpooled with friends when going out.
None of Brute’s possessions were inside, and it didn’t appear the car had been touched by anyone but Brute himself when it was dusted for fingerprints or signs of DNA. Brute’s friends who knew about his secret activities weren’t telling, and Ellen and the children didn’t know anything about their seemingly loving husband and father’s double-life.
At first, the trail seemed like it would go cold, and investigators were frustrated that they had so little to go on.
Then, on October 29th, 20XX, Brute’s neighbor (who apparently asked that his name not be given) called the police department complaining about how the small two-bedroom house next door had begun to smell “like something died in there”, and that he hadn’t seen his neighbor leave or return in days, which was very unusual.
When police arrived, the front door was unlocked. Officer William Keys, the first one inside, later described the smell as “unmistakable. I knew exactly what we’d find the second we walked in that door.”
He was right.
What they found was the bloodied and decomposing body of Henry “Brute” Hanlon, lying on his back in the middle of a small unremarkable living room, on a dirty and stained carpet. He had been viciously stabbed more than fifty times. One even went so far into Brute that there was an exit wound through his back. Medical examiners would later state that at least seven of his wounds would have been directly fatal, but that he had died within the first few and most of the wounds were technically post-mortem.
The murder had been committed by someone who had a very personal reason for the killing. Investigators believe this individual was “absolutely enraged”.
Next to his body was the murder weapon, along with a set of buckles and strips of leather that mystified the officers. These were eventually identified as modified leg braces, but rather than straightening bent or injured legs, they forced the wearer to keep their legs at nearly right angles, which would ensure they had to crawl rather than walk. They appeared to be homemade.
Bloodied smears and footprints led the officers down a hallway and to the bathroom, where there was evidence someone had showered, changed clothes, and then left.
The same neighbor who informed police about the smell also remembered seeing, on October 16th or 17th (later determined that it was likely the 17th, the day that Brute did not return home from “work”), a young man wearing an oversized coat, sweatpants, and a too-large t-shirt walk out of Hanlon’s house and down the street. The young man was on the short side, the neighbor said, had an angular face, and a visible scar at the corner of his mouth and another along the side of his face. He had the collar of the coat flipped up, and the neighbor doesn’t recall if he wore a collar or not.
He had dark eyes, and short but shaggy dark hair that seemed to have been cut hurriedly and unevenly, and he waved at Hanlon’s neighbor without pausing or speaking as he walked past.
Tests on fingerprints and DNA located within Brute Hanlon’s secret second home would reveal that the Box Boy who once ran from Nathaniel Benson after his death was the exact same one who ran from Brute Hanlon after murdering him. The Boxie’s fingerprints were all over the murder weapon… and everywhere else, too.
Within Brute’s home, more knives were found, along with what looked like a badly-crafted homemade whip and some other supplies. A few of the things investigators found appeared to be essentially identical to what was found in Nathaniel Benson’s home. Other things were different (“animalization” was mentioned in some of the reports, but what I’ve been able to find is seriously vague for some reason).
Possibly related, a series of dog leashes purchased from a local pet-supply store were found throughout the home, but there was no evidence of an actual dog. In the home’s main bedroom was a perfectly normal queen-sized bed that was clearly Brute’s, with a small side table, a large dresser, and an attached bathroom.
There was absolutely nothing outwardly out of the ordinary, besides the room being very plain and impersonal. Makes sense, since Brute almost never slept there.
In the second bedroom, however, there was army-style cot with a thin blanket and sheet, three folded shirts on the floor, two sets of bloody metal handcuffs hanging off the cot’s frame at the top and bottom, and a bucket next to the bed. Two metal bowls, clearly of a style meant to be a dog’s food and water bowls, were next to the door. One still had water in it. The window was painted and nailed shut, and bars had been installed over the windows.
Investigators determined the bars were on the house when Brute Hanlon purchased it and had been installed by the previous owner. No reason for that installation was ever given.
Investigation revealed trace amounts of evidence of blood, but nothing much. However, the living room and dining area both showed poorly-cleaned bloodstains that were much older than Hanlon’s murder, including discolored patches on the walls.
A contract for a 24/7 “master/slave” style relationship was found in the top drawer of the dresser, signed ‘Pet’ at the bottom, and with Brute’s name alongside it. However, both signatures match Hanlon’s handwriting, and the Boxie is not believed to have actively signed it, as he would be illiterate at best. Plus, Box Boys are not legally allowed to enter into any contract, anyway, since they can’t understand obligations at that level, so even if he had signed it, it wouldn’t have been considered remotely valid.
I mean, not that those contracts are legal, but... you get my point.
Also located in that drawer were more than one hundred photographs showing the Boxie in a variety of compromising situations and positions. Several of these photos had Brute himself clearly visible in them, and a few had other individuals who have since been identified as Brute’s associates in his more illicit activities.
Interrogations of those associates led to more than seven further arrests for illegal gambling, the production and sale of illicit drugs, and illegal weapons sales. Those interrogations are also how we know about what Brute Hanlon was up to in-between Little League games and Girl Scout meetings.
Those associates claim that Brute kept a “secondhand Box Boy”, muzzled him so he couldn’t speak whenever guests were over, and that often ‘poker night’ simply turned into a game where the assorted guests and Brute himself repeatedly assaulted the Boxie. The associates claimed they thought the entire thing was consensual, but frankly… given the overwhelming evidence that the Boxie had to be kept restrained and was often seriously injured by these assaults... that’s doubtful.
Ellen and her children, who had previously been very visible and spoke often to local news stations about Henry’s disappearance, withdrew after his body was found and his second, secret life revealed - and have never given a single public statement or made a public appearance since.
Ellen moved her children out of Red Hills, moving back in with her own parents, briefly, in northern California. Where they went after that is unknown, but they appear to have left the state and Ellen may have changed her surname. Investigators are firm in their belief that Ellen knew nothing about her husband’s secret life.
I would give my right arm to know what his son and daughter think about it, and if they ever suspected what their devoted dad was up to when he wasn’t at home.
So, what happened to the Boxie after he left the house and disappeared down the block from the witness who saw him?
In short… no one knows for sure.
After murdering Brute Hanlon and cleaning off the evidence that must have been all over him, the Boxie simply fades away. He could have been anywhere, doing anything at all. There is a brief sighting of him on CCTV footage at the local bus station, where he is in line to buy a ticket… and then abruptly looks up, apparently noticing the camera and looking directly into it, then turns and walks quickly away.
The footage is grainy, but the Boxie does appear to be wearing his collar.
He isn’t seen in Red Hills again.
Instead, he reappears one more time before his final murder and disappearance… more than a year later, in a little town right along the border with Nevada.
Part 3 will go into how the investigation into the death of a quiet little oddball named Robert Weber reveals a basement full of skeletal bodies. But our Boxie isn’t the cause.
Instead, Robert Weber’s murder solves a series of related murders police had been stymied by for more than a decade, and a Box Boy who may have been meant to be Weber’s next victim instead turned accidental vigilante with a final killing of his own.
Or maybe I should say, his final killing so far.

AU: Modern Day | part 2
♔ December 5th - January 2nd
Regina Mills Locksley
39 years old
Owner of Mills Real Estate { currently on maternity leave }
Married to Robin Locksley
Mother of Isabella Mills Locksley, Roland Locksley and Sadie Locksley
Zelena Greene & Xaviera Cortez - best friends; Henry Greene - godson; David Nolan - brother in law; Mary Nolan - sister in law; Neal Nolan - nephew
Born and raised in NYC, Regina had to learn how to live and survive on her own as a young single mother after the loss of her unborn baby’s father. It was during these early years that Regina was fortunate enough to find a true friend for life, Zelena Greene, another single mother who became like a sister to her, and together they created a little family of four. After years of casual jobs, a little luck shined on Regina, granting her a position with a successful local real estate company, and after working very hard and closely with Robin Locksley, CEO of one of the top architecture companies, she had an offer to make a progress and open her own business. Robin had soon turned to be everything she could ever ask for without even realizing it. Close friendship slowly turned into romance, and seven years into their unofficial relationship, there was now a ring on her finger, official adoptions of each other’s children, and a newborn girl to cuddle this upcoming holiday season.
Full bio under the cut!
Growing up in New York City to the respectable wealthy Mills family wasn’t easy. With a strict mother as hers, ever since a very young age Regina always had to excel every aspect of her life. Disappointing Mother was never an option or there would be consequences... ones that usually included Regina getting locked away in her room, some days for hours. Freedom was all she ever wanted. The freedom to choose, the freedom to do what she loved, the freedom to grow as her own person without having to fear Mother’s reaction or disapproval - freedom to simply live her life.
Falling in love at seventeen with a boy studying at her fancy private school on a scholarship and being supported by a financial aid program was definitely not something Mother would approve of; which was why Regina had to keep her relationship with Daniel Colter a secret - until it was no longer possible. Regina was pregnant, and she made the difficult decision to leave the place she grew up at and have a fresh start with Daniel, before Mother could make any more lectures about Regina wrecking her own life should she choose to keep that baby. Daniel’s family wasn’t any better. They refused to hear anything about the woman who they claimed destroyed their son’s future or acknowledge their unborn grandchild. It wasn’t long after that her life did wreck. The father of her unborn child and the man Regina loved was dead, and so was any hope for a better future for the little family.
Her father was a solid rock then, during Regina’s early years on her own. He’s been there to secretly support her and her newborn daughter - Isabella Danielle, and despite Regina’s pride not to accept the help, she was grateful and desperate for it. And then Zelena Greene entered her life. A chance meeting between two young, single mothers girls had quickly blossomed into a beautiful friendship until this very day that created a little family of their own. There was no doubt in their hearts that even though the family of four didn’t have much, their two children would grow up with an endless amount of love and support. Nothing else mattered.
After years of casual jobs around the city, a real chance occurred to her. Getting involved with the real estate business was never part of Regina’s plans but it felt like fate was leading her in the direction when the local diner she worked at had to shut down. With debts over the owner’s head and him getting too old to run the place, there was no other option. But when Regina overheard a phone conversation by a costumer she realized was a real estate agent, talking to a client who was looking to find a place to start their restaurant, Regina saw an opportunity to help and pay back to her boss who’s always been kind and understanding to her, and she acted. With a bold, sassy and fearless attitude, she managed to convince the agent to give her boss an offer and help him to sell the place. And not only that, but out of the difficult circumstances, Regina’s biggest business opportunity arose when she got an offer to work for the realtor’s local agency.
This was how she met Robin Locksley - owner of Locksley Architecture. Regina was the one who sealed many deals for the man’s business over the years, and their professional relationship quickly grew into a friendship. Robin trusted her, had faith and confidence in her to a point he fully trusted her to be the sole agent for his properties; full faith and trust that he even offered her a position as her own boss running her own real estate company. Mills Real Estate was soon born, located on a floor of Locksley Architecture‘s headquarters. Neither Regina or Robin was certain when and how exactly their friendship took an unexpected turn into the romantic path; everything happened so naturally. One moment she was a friend an co-worker helping her single-dad friend take care of his young child and the next thing she knew, they slipped into a pattern of a couple; the kind of relationship they both had no doubt was for life. It took them nearly seven years to make it official, but when Robin took it to the next level and proposed, Regina had no other answer to provide other than yes. Robin was her soulmate. Her best friend, and the love of her life. There was not a single doubt about that. He was the only man she’d want to spend the rest of her life with and the one and only father figure she'd ever want for her daughter, who never even got to know her biological father.

MODERN DAY AU
December 5th to January 2nd.
Isabella Danielle Locksley
twenty years old
student at NYU Tisch and perfromer
important connections; daughter of Regina Locksley and Daniel Colter (deceased). adopted daughter of Robin Locksley, sister of Roland and Sadie Wren. niece of David and Mary Nolan. cousin of Neal Nolan. best friend of Samantha Bradshaw. good friend of Henry Greene and Wyatt Benjamin.
things will be tagged [ modern day au ]
Isabella Danielle Mills was born in 2001 to Regina Mills and Daniel Colter. Unfortunately, she never knew her biological father as he passed before her entrance to the world. Despite growing up with a single mother, never did the girl want or need for anything. In Isabella’s mind, it was mother and daughter against the world. Every school conference, birthday, tea party, dance recital, singing lessons; Regina was there. The absence of another parent was rarely felt as an over abundance of love was poured on the child from her mother. The moments of sadness were rare and never spoken of in fear of hurting mom. When daddy daughter dances were mentioned lips stayed sealed, when friends spoke of fathers day gifts lips remained sealed, when others asked about the mans passing nothing was ever said. Daniel was just not something freely spoken about between mother and daughter.
At a young age, Isabella discovered a love for the stage! Singing and dancing quickly became a passion! There wasn’t a dance class the girl didn’t want to try. As she aged, writing songs slid into those passions. Every single emotion was poured into the arts. If sad she wrote. If ecstatic she sang. If conflicted she danced. Music was passion in every form! This very love landed the Mills girl a spot at NYU Tisch. One of the proudest moments in live was receiving the acceptance letter. Of course, being away from mother was not an option so living on campus was quickly shut down.
Seven years ago, Robin Locksley came into the Mills women’s life. It was strange, at first, to have a man around who was enamored with mother. Never in all her years had Isabella had to share attention. Almost as soon as the man entered came a baby at his hip. It took some getting used to, but soon after Roland Locksley began to walk the girl noticed a change in the adults. There was love in their eyes. From that moment on, Isabella Mills asked the two when they were going to finally get married. Their relationship was perplexing but made Regina happy which made Isabella so as well. Now with a ring on mothers finger, Isabella finds herself wondering if this was the path meant for mother and father - a man she never met. Thoughts were kept private but sometimes screamed so loud music was used to drown them out. Soon after the wedding Robin officially adopted Isabella changing her last name to Locksley and a new addition joined their family; Sadie Wren. The five of them have a wonderful life together! Nothing could take that away, right? She finally had a father, a brother and a surprise sister. Her biggest fear was losing the family she had secretly longed for.
Like any teenager, Isabella posts practically everything on social media. The growing desire to share parts of herself without having to face anyone led to a few of her songs being discovered and blown up from her youtube channel. The next thing Isabella knew she had thousands of followers on every social media platform and was now performing on stages around the city. It looks like she has the perfect life, but underneath it all Isabella is riddled with anxiety over the newfound small level of fame. When she’s not at school, dance, writing or singing, Isabella can be found spending time with her family or fluttering about town with friends. Shopping is a bad hobby no doubt inherited from the very woman who raised her. Yoga is attended several times a week, the gym at least four, in an attempt to stay in shape. Any moment she can steal with Regina is soaked up without a second thought, even if that means cancelling on someone else.

Amoureux - Henry’s Birth Story
A/N I always love birth stories (I swear I would have been a midwife if I wasn’t scared of blood) so I wanted to write another for one of our universes on here. So here is the story of Daniel and Louisa’s first little royal; however born into poverty in the countryside of Virginia.
A/N2 Take a look at that sweet little title strip for what Daniel looks like in this story...sometimes I forget that Daniel and Louisa are so young...must be protected at all costs.
T/W Detailed descriptions of labour and delivery, mentions of death as childbirth in 1821 was dangerous as all heck
W/C: 4.6k words
Tumblr media
Daniel was always a pretty sure young man and not much phased him. It had been like that for as long as he could remember; always the reckless one in his family and getting up to trouble and just living life without thought of the consequences. At sixteen however, this blew up in his face when he was exiled from England and was sent packing to freshly independent America – thankfully with Louisa by his side. Married and soon pregnant but also dealing with the slap in the face that reality brought, Daniel’s personality changed drastically. He wasn’t constantly excitable anymore; he was constantly scared.
Even more scared when his wife went into labour one August evening. Both not much older than seventeen and completely alone on their half of the world, Daniel and Louisa were terrified. They were both clueless to the realities of childbirth; only thinking that one day they would somehow receive a child but not thinking of the pain it might bring along the way.
The few hours of late afternoon on August 6th brought simple discomfort in Louisa as she continued making dinner and milling about their small two room house. Daniel kept watch over her every time she leaned on the table and let out a heavy exhale but neither knew exactly what was happening. Louisa passed it off as stomach cramps and went about her chores. But as the sun started to set, her pain got worse.
“Dani.”
Her voice was so soft and so delicate and Daniel’s head snapped up from the newspaper in his hand to look over at his wife in the doorway to the kitchen. Her hands were holding her up on the frame and a steady flow of clear liquid was falling down her leg from under her long skirt. The fear in her eyes was more than apparent and Daniel’s eyes went wide.
“Dani, what is happening?” Louisa whimpered.
He dropped the newspaper on the table and got to his feet to aide her but just as he reached her side, she let out an uncontrollable wail and grabbed onto his arm. Her grip was tight and Daniel was frozen in shock, watching her hiss through her pain until she faded out of it with a sharp gasp.
“It hurts terribly.” Louisa said shakily, glancing up at him in front of her.
“I should fetch a doctor.” Daniel suggested.
“They will not help us.” Louisa argued as she stood up straighter again, discomfort etched on her face and her hand fell to the large swell of her stomach. “We are far too British for them. You know they dislike that.”
Daniel swore under his breath and leaned in to press a kiss to her head, “Let me at least ask Alice up at the main house if she can offer some assistance.”
Louisa, too weak and pained to argue, nodded. Daniel sat her down on the chair he had stood from and then rushed out of the house. They lived on a small piece of property kindly sold to them by seemingly the only couple in the entire colonial country who gave them a second look, just at the edge of their own large section of land. The main house was up a bit of a hill and past the barn and Daniel rushed over the grass as fast as he could, scrambling up the porch steps and knocked loudly at the door.
Moments later, the housekeeper answered, confused as to who the guest at dinner time was but the panic in Daniel’s face had her surprised.
“I need to speak to Alice please. It’s of dire importance.” Daniel said. The housekeeper nodded and rushed back off down the hallway to find the lady of the house. Daniel waited impatiently on the porch, glancing back towards their small house for a moment, before looking back to meet Alice who was approaching from the parlour quickly.
“What is it, Daniel?” she asked worriedly.
“It’s Louisa. She…she is in a lot of pain and something…she…something…” Daniel flushed red as he tried to explain to the older woman what had happened.
“Sounds like she’s having the baby.” Alice told him as she grabbed her shawl from the rack beside the door and pulled it around her shoulders. “I will come assist you both.”
“But, ma’am, your supper.” The housekeeper called out as she stepped out on the porch.
“Leave it warming for me, Agnes. I will eat it when I return.” Alice waved her off and then followed Daniel back across the grass towards the house.
Daniel could physically feel his heart beating in his chest the whole way back to their small house and neither of them said a word the entire walk. Louisa’s cries of agony could be heard from outside and Daniel rushed in quickly at the sound of her. She was still on the kitchen chair, bent over the table and wailing into her arm, her hand up her skirt as if she was trying to do something to stop the terrible pain.
“We’re here, little girl.” Alice said sweetly, taking off her shawl and draped it around the seventeen-year-old’s shoulders. “Sounds like we’re going to be having a baby tonight.”
“I do not want a baby anymore!” Louisa sobbed, her cheeks flushed red and sweat already pooling at her hairline. Her accent seemed to get thicker through her tears.
“Well, you have no choice in the matter.” Alice said, kneeling on the ground at Louisa’s feet. She paused to look up at Daniel who was stood, frozen in shock, in the doorway. “Go light some candles and lay some linens out on the bed for us please, dear.”
Daniel nodded and rushed across the small hallway to the bedroom.
Alice lifted up Louisa’s skirt to find that her water had broken – what Daniel had been trying to explain up at the house – and she stood up again. Louisa had just finished her contraction and was left panting over the kitchen table, her fingers gripping the edge and her eyes shut tightly.
“Good thing I have delivered children and grandchildren of my own. You are in good hands, little girl.” Alice assured her, petting back Louisa’s frazzled strawberry-blonde hair from her face. She re-tied it for her to keep it back and off her neck as the labouring mother’s body heat rose.
“Is it supposed to hurt this terribly?” Louisa whimpered, rubbing her hand over her large stomach.
“Yes. Women were destined to suffer during childbirth. That is what the Bible has decreed.”
“Oh, mercy.” Louisa whined.
Daniel slunk back into the living space, hands shyly behind his back and his bottom lip stuck between his teeth anxiously.
“All set up?” Alice asked him.
He nodded.
“Lovely. Let’s get her up and get her comfortable.”
“I do not want to move.” Louisa whimpered as Daniel came over to help pull her to her feet and Alice disappeared into the bedroom to make sure everything was ready.
Daniel held his hands out to her and Louisa only slouched over the table again, not wanting to look at him and certainly not wanting to move. He brushed his hand over her hair and over her shoulder and across her back, whispering a lightly encouraging, “Time to stand up, darling.”
Louisa shook her head.
“Yes, it is. Come on now.” Daniel bent down to wrap his arms around her middle to try and hoist her up.
“No, Dani. Daniel. No…please.” Louisa cried, clinging onto his shirt but doing her best to not have to move in fear of triggering another on-set of pain.
“Come on, darling.” Daniel whispered against her ear, “Please get up.”
Louisa finally gave in, letting him lift her up from the chair and she steadied herself with a hand on the tabletop. Daniel exhaled deeply, pressing a kiss to her cheek as his hands slipped down to her waist to keep her steady. Her arms stayed around his shoulders, fingers still gripping onto the back of his shirt as she shut her eyes and leaned into him in her momentary peace.
Alice returned to the kitchen to check on them and she helped Daniel walk Louisa over to the bedroom. Plentiful candles were set up as the sun was setting and thus excess lighting was needed, a few small tables moved to the end of the bed to give Alice plenty of light to work by. She had also set a wash basin on the bedside table with water from the well with a small linen to cool down the mother-to-be as she delivered as well as a glass of water for her to drink from.
Louisa shrieked as another contraction washed over her and she dug her nails into Daniel’s shoulders tightly, her eyes screwing shut and her head falling forward as the pain spread over her hips and through her pelvis. Her agonising groans had Daniel stunned into perfect silence, holding her steady as she worked through it even as tears welled in her eyes.
“Christ almighty.” Louisa swore through her teeth, letting her head fall back and she looked up to the ceiling, her movements now fading into a natural trance as her body took over for her mind. She bit her lip and furrowed her eyebrows and leaned forward, using Daniel’s shoulders as support to lean on as she moaned through the pain of her strong contraction.
Alice had the bed set up properly with the linens that Daniel had put down and as Louisa breathed shakily through her contraction, Alice started unbuttoning her blouse. Louisa wasn’t even phased as the older woman stripped her, mostly glad to get some cool air on her hot skin instead, and soon she was down to nothing, standing bare in Daniel’s arms. Of course he had seen her naked plenty of times but the naïve seventeen-year-old still flushed pink as he held his labouring wife and the half-stranger with them touched her bare skin.
Louisa breathed strongly out of her contraction, her face contorted slightly in pain, and stood up straighter, swaying slightly on her feet to ease the pressure that was being put on her pelvis as the baby dropped lower. Daniel helped her onto the bed, watching in near awe as she somehow just knew to spread her legs even with her eyes closed and her lips pouted, one hand set gently on her large stomach and her other arm draped lazily over her head.
“Good work, dear.” Alice praised softly, rubbing her hands over the mother-to-be’s hips. “Just listen to your body.”
Louisa breathed shakily, trying to keep her inhales and exhales deep and consistent as Alice pressed her hands to her stomach and pressed gently around her skin. It was slightly uncomfortable, and Louisa reached out a hand for Daniel to take to offer her some sort of comfort and he did, standing with her quietly.
“We have a well-behaved baby here. He or she is angled just right.” Alice said reassuringly.
Louisa exhaled deeply, glancing between Alice and her husband at her bedside, her hand still clutching his tightly, anxiously, fearfully. Alice draped a blanket over Louisa to keep her from catching a chill laying bare in the drafty house as nighttime set over the countryside and then turned to Daniel.
“May I have a word with you, dear?”
Daniel hesitated, glancing down at Louisa before nodding and letting his hand fall out of his wife’s as he followed the older woman back into the kitchen. He wiped his clammy palms on his trousers as they fell to a stop by the window.
Alice spoke quietly but seriously to him, “How much do you know about childbirth, Daniel?”
The seventeen-year-old just blinked at her and then shamefully looked to the floor, “Nothing.”
“That’s what I thought. So I’m going to have to prepare you for the realities of what might happen here tonight. You are a grown man now – you’re having a baby – so you should be able to handle the truth.”
Daniel swallowed thickly but nodded her on.
“Childbirth is very dangerous for women and we can’t ignore the fact that it is possible we might lose her tonight.”
Daniel gasped sharply and he looked over his shoulder back towards the bedroom. Alice set her hand on his arm to bring his attention back to her.
“You and I are going to work together to deliver a nice healthy baby and keep Louisa calm and safe and well, but ultimately it is in the hands of God. If she loses too much blood, she will die. If the baby gets stuck, they might both die. We don’t want to call a doctor unless absolutely necessary because the deaths by their hands are way too common; they don’t understand women like women do. Do you understand me, Daniel?”
His eyes were brimming with tears and he took a shaky breath, forcing himself to nod that he understood.
“I have done this many times and it is very good you came to get me. You would not be able to deliver on your own. But you’re going to help me and we’re going to make sure it all goes smoothly.”
Daniel nodded again.
“Do not tell her what I told you here; we do not want her panicking. Just sit with her and hold her and tell her you love her because there is a possibility it might be your last time.”
“I do not want to lose her.” Daniel whimpered.
“Say your prayers, little boy.” was all Alice could comfort him with before she was heading back into the bedroom.
Daniel’s vision was blurred through his forming tears and he rested his hands on the tabletop, taking a few shaking breaths to try and compose himself. There was no way he could live if he lost her. He didn’t even want to think about it. Children were never taught about reproduction and especially not in royal families, so Daniel and Louisa barely even knew how babies came to be when she fell pregnant. They figured it was a miracle by God and all would be well. Daniel didn’t expect to hear that it might have been God punishing them. The sins that Daniel had committed in the pervious year flashed through his mind until he was dropping to his knees right at the kitchen table and prayed for the first time since he was a little boy.
He didn’t dare want to risk anything more than he had to.
A scream from the bedroom tore him from his prayers and he jumped right up to tend to his wife. Louisa was still on the bed, her legs spread, and her bare skin shining in sweat under the candlelight. Her fists were gripping the sheets so tightly her knuckles were turning white and her face was scrunched up in pure agony as she screamed again. Alice was at the foot of the bed and had her hand between the labouring mother’s legs to check her status and Daniel just slunk up to the top of the bed, away from the birthing area at all costs, and leaned down to press a soft kiss to Louisa’s forehead.
She whimpered but leaned into his touch as he shifted onto the bed beside her and tucked his arm around her shoulders. Louisa’s hand found the material of his pants instead of the sheets, gripping her pain out through the fabric as he left a lingering kiss to her temple.
“I love you.” Daniel breathed right up against her ear as if it was a secret just for them.
Louisa only groaned loudly in response, gritting her teeth and curling her toes through the hot pain that radiated over her hips. Daniel ran his fingers through her hair and massaged over her scalp softly as he simply watched her in silence as she writhed in pain.
“Tell me you love me.” Daniel pressed softly.
Louisa groaned loudly, “I really do not particularly love you right now, darling.”
“Give her some space to labour how she wishes.” Alice told Daniel gently.
He shifted away from his wife just a little to give her room to breathe, his wide scared eyes locked on her as she contracted in waves as the minutes ticked by. The minutes turned into hours; hours of torturous labour for the young mother-to-be and torturous for her just as young and just as clueless husband who tried his best to not think that she was going to die in this much pain. Daniel patted her forehead with the damp cloth and held the water glass for her as she sipped but she didn’t want much.
It was nearing eleven at night soon and Alice had just slipped back up to her house for a quick moment to gather a few supplies that might help with the delivery as the time drew closer. Daniel was nearly begging her silently not to leave but Alice assured him she would hurry and then he was watching her rush off across the property to the large house on the hill.
“Daniel!” Louisa shrieked from the bedroom, urging him back down the hallway.
He stood in the doorway, his expression flat and pale as he stared at her on their bed; how her skin was drenched in sweat and her face was flushed pink through her agony, her strawberry blonde hair kept an absolute frazzled mess with how she was writhing over the sheets. Her hand was between her legs as if desperate to somehow relieve some of the painful pressure and her other arm was draped over her face. Daniel hesitated in the doorway.
“Daniel!” she screamed again.
He shuffled over to her bedside and set his hand on her arm to alert her of his presence. Louisa dropped her arm from her face and reached out to him, tears dripping down her cheeks with how much pain she was in, and he laced their fingers together and brought them up to his lips to kiss her hand.
“Am I going to die?” Louisa asked ever so softly, her voice threaded with fear and exhaustion.
“I…I don’t know.” Daniel said.
Her face scrunched up as yet another quick contraction rolled over her and she let out a strained yell through her sudden sob, her other hand still between her legs. Her sudden silence had Daniel staring at her with wide eyes but she pulled out of it with a shaky gasp before baring down again, squeezing his hand in hers until he was sure she was going to break his fingers.
“What are you doing?” Daniel asked shakily. “You should wait for Alice-”
“Ferme ta gueule, Daniel. Si vous plait.” Louisa said through her teeth, propping herself up on one arm and pushed hard again.
Daniel knew well that she just told him to shut the fuck up but he really thought that she wasn’t supposed to be doing this without Alice there.
“Louisa…” Daniel breathed shakily, trying to pry his fingers out of her fierce grip on his hand.
She finally let him step back, using her hand instead to pull her leg back as she bore down again, letting out a rough strangled groan as her face contorted in desperation and agony. Daniel walked quickly to the door of the bedroom just as Alice came back into the house and he let out a heavy sigh of relief at the sight of her.
The sound of Louisa already starting to push had Alice rushing down the hallway and right past Daniel to tend to her. Daniel stood in the doorway and his eyes went as wide as saucers as he glanced between his wife’s spread legs and saw something pushing its way out of her body.
“Good girl, dear.” Alice praised as she quickly took her position at the foot of the bed. “Very good. This baby is going to be here in mere moments.”
Daniel, his face frozen flat and wide blue eyes seemingly unable to be torn from the foot of the bed, didn’t move an inch from the doorway. Louisa fell back onto the bed through breathless gasps, pushing her hand through her messy hair as she took a moment.
“Push again when you feel the need, little girl.” Alice instructed, pressing her hand down gently on Louisa’s large stomach as if to help coax the baby along.
Only seconds later, Louisa was propping herself up on her forearms again and screaming at the top of her lungs through another hard push.
“Keep going, Louisa. That’s great!” Alice encouraged. She turned to Daniel in the doorway and offered a stern, “What are you waiting for? An invitation? Get over here, little boy.”
Daniel hesitated for a beat but joined Alice at the foot of the bed, swallow thickly at the sight of the shape that was pushing its way out of Louisa’s body, dripped in blood and plentiful other fluids. He was too in shock to feel nauseous, especially as Alice grabbed his wrist in her damp hand and pulled him right into the delivery.
“That’s your baby’s head.” she said, smiling softly at his saucer wide eyes as his hand stayed perfect motionless against the curved shape dotted in thin brown hair.
“Oh my God.” Daniel breathed.
“Pretty incredible, is it not?” Alice smiled before turning back to Louisa. “Let’s get this baby out, Louisa. Give me a nice strong push, dear.”
Daniel tried to step back but Alice pulled him right back in, keeping his hands out as her fingers wiggled around the crown of the baby’s head to stretch out Louisa’s muscles and help her deliver.
It barely phased Louisa who was still propped up on her arms and pushing with everything in her through agonising screams and moans, swearing loudly through her teeth, “Oh, putain de bordel de merde!”
Daniel glanced up at her at her terrible fowl language that he had never heard come out of her mouth before, but there was much more to worry about than how aggressively she was swearing. He looked back down between her legs, watching as Alice helped guide the baby’s head out into the open air and Daniel audibly gasped.
“Good girl, Louisa! One more strong, strong push, dear.” Alice encouraged.
Louisa took a deep breath and as she waited a few moments until he body told her to push, Alice turned to Daniel who was still stood right beside her.
“You’re going to catch your baby.”
His head snapped towards her, “What? No…I…”
“Yes, you are.” Alice took his hands again and guided him forward to cradle the baby’s head. “Natural instinct, little boy. You got it.”
Right then, Louisa scrunched up her nose and shut her eyes and pushed one more time. Daniel’s eyes widened even more as he could feel her body physically squeezing and pushing to birth the baby and sure enough, he didn’t even need to think about it before he stepped right up closer just in time to watch as his son was born right into his hands.
Louisa let out a heavy gasp of relief and fell back onto the bed, heaving with breathlessness, and Daniel stared down at the tiny baby in his two hands as he let out his first cry.
Alice smiled, “A beautiful sound from a beautiful baby boy.”
She stood up and grabbed one of the extra linens to wrap around the baby to keep him warm and she helped Daniel bring him right up to his chest to keep him secure. Louisa smiled through her exhaustion at her husband and her son, already nearly forgetting all the pain she had just endured.
“Hold him right there, dear. We’re not quite done yet.” Alice turned back to Louisa and got her to deliver the placenta but Daniel didn’t even notice, too hung up by the wailing baby in his arms.
“How is he, Dani?” Louisa finally asked when she was all finished and Alice set the placenta in the empty pot she had brought over.
“Perfect.” Daniel breathed, finally looking over at his wife from the foot of the bed.
“Let’s go give Mother a chance to hold him now.” Alice set a hand on Daniel’s shoulder and guided him around the side of the bed, the pot sat on her hip as the baby was still connected to the placenta.
Louisa sat up a little as Daniel carefully set the wrapped-up baby in her open arms. His cries seemed to calm down a little as he laid against her warm skin and Louisa pet his wet brown hair with her gentle palm.
“He is beautiful.” Louisa whispered, leaning down slightly to press a tender kiss to her son’s little nose and she tucked the linen higher around him habitually to keep him warm.
Daniel reached out slightly to hesitantly touch the umbilical chord that was poking out of the linen and fed down into the pot that Alice held. The older woman passed him a knife and instructed him to cut it.
“Does it hurt him?” Daniel asked nervously as he took the knife.
“No, no. He will be fine.” Alice assured him as she pulled the linen open a little and Daniel leaned over with the knife. With a steady hand and a quick slice, the umbilical chord fell and Alice tucked it in the pot as well before she moved across the room to clean up a bit.
The baby quieted down and Daniel tucked the blood stained linen back around his tiny body in Louisa’s arms. Louisa looked up at her husband and they shared small smiles before he leaned down to kiss her once and then climbed up on the bed beside her, both of them looking back at the newborn in perfect silence.
“Mon petit prince.” Louisa whispered happily, leaning her head on Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel smiled and pressed a sweet kiss to her cheek.
Alice cleaned up the new mother and draped a few blankets over her bare body as she came down from the intensity of the labour and delivery and her body was starting to shiver a little. Daniel wrapped his arm around her shoulders too and rested his head against hers, a small content smile on his lips as they stared down at their brand-new baby.
“Let’s get this little boy fed.” Alice suggested, coming over to the bedside again as he had started mewling in Louisa’s arms. The older woman showed her how to hold the baby so he could latch onto her breast and soon the baby was feeding contentedly.
A calm fell over the small two room house as the last minutes of August 6th passed; the young parents tucked up together with their new baby son and nothing but love in their hearts. Daniel reached his hand over to slide his index finger against the newborn’s little hand that was resting against Louisa’s chest as he nursed, but he wrapped his tiny fingers around Daniel’s one instead. Daniel’s soft gasp had Louisa smiling fondly.
Louisa glanced over at Daniel and his awestruck smile and leaned in to push a soft kiss to his lips, “I love you.”
“I love you so much.” Daniel whispered, kissing her lips again before leaving one more to her temple when she turned back to the baby in her arms. He nuzzled right up with her, resting his cheek against hers as he looked down at their son over her shoulder as he rubbed the pad of his thumb over the baby’s fingers that were wrapped around his. “I love you too, our little prince.”
“Prince Henry. Destined for greatness.” Louisa breathed, only hoping her wish could become a reality admits their poverty stricken world.
