My Hero Academia (Season 7)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
My Hero Academia (Season 7, 2024, Japan)
Directors: Kenji Nagasaki & Naomi Nakayama
Writer: Yosuke Kuroda (based on the manga by Kohei Horikoshi)
Mini-review:
This season was so stressful! Pretty much every episode made it clear that the end is near, and that meant having a ton of climactic battles and cathartic moments. It was all so intense that my tears would slip out of their own accord from time to time. The last few episodes, where some of the longest-running storylines began to wrap up, were particularly breathtaking. I also loved that pretty much all the major characters got their moment to shine at some point of this season-long war arc; it's a testament to the richness of this cast the even the episodes without any of the main characters are still entertaining as hell. The animation wasn't perfect all the way through, but it absolutely delivered in the scenes that needed to be showstopping. And during the weaker stretches, the stunning voice-acting made up for it. Anyway, My Hero Academia has been one of the most important anime series in my life, and while I know I'll be crushed to see it go, I can't wait for the final season next year.

Kuroda interview
Rough TL under the cut
KURODA YOSUKE (screenwriter) INTERVIEW
When I die, I want all the Blu-ray volumes of "Heroaka" to be placed in my coffin.
Q. It seems that you were a fan of the original work, and with the help of our editor, what did you like about it?
A. I was attracted to the setting in which the hero blends into society as a profession. Even if you play an active role as a hero, you won't be able to make a living if you don't earn an income. If you fight an villain and randomly increase the damage, it will lead to compensation issues. Appearing in commercials and earning extra income...I like that kind of naive side. Also, I like classic stories where the main character grows with his friends, and I also love school stories, so HeroAca was full of things I liked. So when I was asked to write a script, I immediately replied, "I'd absolutely love to do it".
Actually, I've never written a proper school story before, so I always admired it. It was a big job and I felt the pressure, but the animation is made by all the staff.
I thought it would work out somehow (lol). I'm an optimist, just like Hawks.
What was particularly memorable about the launch of the first phase?
The most memorable part was deciding whether to do the first episode of the original work as a single anime episode or to split it into two episodes.
I thought the only way to do this was to actually write it and have it decided, so I came up with two versions: one condensed into one story, and the other in which I sat down and fully sketched out the worldview...and expanded it into two stories. We prepared three scripts, and in the end we decided to split them into two episodes. I've never done anything like that with any other work. I think that's because I loved ``Heroaka'' and was so invested in making this anime.
I'm working on it.
Q. What are the difficulties in converting the manga into a script from the 1st-6th seasons?
It was a meeting for the second movie version. When Izuku proposed the idea of transferring OFA to Bakugou, Horikoshi-sensei immediately agreed. When the editor in charge at the time asked, ``Are you sure it's okay?'', the teacher said, ``I'll draw a manga that's more interesting than that idea,'' which literally made me nervous. I thought the teacher was amazing, he was like All Might.
Did you receive any inspiration or hints from Mr. Koshi's words?
Express your true feelings in extreme situations
What is the most memorable episode?
I like the main character Izuku the most. I love the episode ``My Hero'' in the third season. When he was in a big pinch, he said sorry. I like the scene where All Might says this in his heart and thinks about his mother over and over again, more than the scene where he directly defeats the villain. He reveals his true feelings in the extreme situation... ...I think that's the real thrill of fiction.
What are the highlights of the 7th season, which began airing in May?
I guess this is where the conclusion is drawn for each character, the hero and villain. Although I may not be on the same level as Horikoshi-sensei and the editor in charge, I have been involved in writing anime scripts for over eight years, so I am very proud of the work. Ah, the feeling of desolation that it's over, and the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I've written this far.
I really hope they make it into an anime until the final episode...Do you feel the same way, Kuroda-san?
At first, I wanted to write 100 anime scripts and 100 episodes of the anime by myself, and I was able to accomplish that...but now I want to write the anime script until the end. When that happens, and when I die, I want all the Blu-ray volumes of ``Heroaka'' to be in my coffin. Overflowing from the coffin.

moment from holy eternity
i wanted to do some digging into setsuna’s name and its meaning, because it was chosen very deliberately and makes for an interesting subject. for starters: how is setsuna f. seiei written in japanese? 刹那・F・セイエイ interesting right off the bat. we’ve got three writing systems here: kanji, the roman alphabet, and katakana. mixing kanji and katakana is unusual irl (you wouldn’t find that or a middle initial in the average japanese name) but it isn’t necessarily odd by the show’s standards: saji crossroad is written 沙慈・クロスロード, and sumeragi lee noriega is written  スメラギ・李・ノリエガ, for example. katakana is generally used for rendering non-japanese words, and actually contains sounds that don’t normally exist in japanese, like the ‘ti’ in tieria. kind of interesting that actual japanese words like ‘sumeragi’ are written in katakana rather than kanji? i’m mostly mentioning this because trying to verify the meaning of ‘seiei’ drove me slightly insane thanks largely to being written in katakana. put a pin in that. alright. so. 刹那, literally meaning ‘moment’ or ‘instant’. according to wikitionary, “From Middle Chinese 剎那 (MC t͡ʃʰˠɛt̚ nɑ), a transliteration of Sanskrit क्षण (kṣaṇa).[1][2] Originally a Buddhist term meaning the smallest possible moment in time: a split-second. Carries favorable connotations of "precious" from the Buddhist teaching that one should live well even in the shortest moment of time.” now we’ve got the F. this would be impossibly mysterious... if we didn’t have an official answer. yeah, the post title spoils it, but it’s literally ‘From’. thanks to this individual doing a srwux let’s play, we even have a specific source for where this statement originated: Newtype Magazine of September/2008 but as they also mention, setsuna’s name reads as Setsuna From Seiei, meaning Moment From Eternity. it’s correct, but not complete. (again, the title spoils the mystery, but let me have this.) we now move onto seiei. this is where i lost my mind a bit. if you plug ‘seiei meaning in japanese’ into google, you get 精鋭, meaning elite. but wait. that’s wrong. i went into this knowing that the gist of setsuna’s name is ‘moment from eternity’. what do you mean elite?! there has to be another kanji or something it’s referencing. i double check what the japanese word for eternity even is, and it’s 永遠, eien. not seiei. okay, what the hell. at that point i took to the japanese and chinese side of the internet and found multiple references to different characters: 聖永 alrighty, let’s put this into deepl, and... my brother in christ, what do you mean this translates to “Eimei era (1558.2.28-1570.4.23)” and is pronounced ‘seinaga’?!? the alternate translation given is “eternal sun”, which is... close-ish, but still not right. that’s not ringing any bells. this is turning out like one of those math problems where you’re given the quotient first and your job is to determine a corresponding equation. finally, i try kanshudo’s kanji search. and what have we here. what we need to look at is how these kanji are pronounced individually. 聖: セイ sei, meaning holy and  永: エイ ei, meaning long time notice that the ‘ei’ kanji is the same one in eien/eternity 永遠 (fun fact, if unrelated: 永 is made up of the characters for ice 冫 and water 水 . after a long time, ice melts into water! what a clever way of conveying the meaning.) and wouldn’t you know it? plugging 永 into deepl gives me ‘immortality’ and ‘eternity’ as less common meanings. which leaves us with Moment From Holy Eternity. i had heard ‘holy eternity’ before, but had forgotten it until this kanji deep dive. from what i can gather here, series writer yosuke kuroda was the one who came up with setsuna f. seiei and the meaning behind it, but director seiji mizushima seems to have went “this kid’s from the middle east tho” and setsuna f. seiei became a codename. which leads me to the last thing i want to mention. it seems like common knowledge, but it’s worth repeating since we’re on the subject: the name soran ibrahim was taken from the real life actor soran ebrahim who starred in the kurdish war drama ‘turtles can fly’. if ‘setsuna f. seiei’ came from kuroda, it’s reasonable to assume that ‘soran ibrahim’ was mizushima’s choice. THIS WAS AS LONG A POST AS I EXPECTED IT’D BE, HHHH. i hope it was interesting!

My Hero Academia: 5th Season (2021)
Plot premise: UA Academy's Class 1-A has been the focus of a substantial amount of public attention due to the multiple villain attacks they have faced over the past school year. This attention has left Class 1-A's rivals, Class 1-B, feeling quite bitter. Desiring to prove their skills, they look forward to the opportunity that has been given to them: a set of mock battles between the students of each class.
The classes are split into squads of four, each of which is tasked with capturing the other group members. The winner is the group who first secures all of the opposing team. While this sounds simple, a curveball is thrown into the mix with the inclusion of General Course Student Hitoshi Shinsou, who wishes to transfer into the Hero Course. Despite using his training with Class 1-A's homeroom teacher Shouta "Eraserhead" Aizawa to prove that he's capable of being a real hero, he is still far behind the others due to his lack of experience. However, Shinsou is determined to overcome this challenge.
Thus begins the fiery competition between Class 1-A and 1-B as each tries to prove that they are superior to the other.
Network: JNN Episodes (and episode length): 25 (24 mins) Creator: Horikoshi Kohei (manga), Kuroda Yosuke (anime) Cast: Yamashita Daiki, Kaji Yuuki, Okamoto Nobuhiko, Miyake Kenta, Suwabe Junichi, Sakura Ayane, Inada Tetsu, Nakamura Yuuichi IMDB | RottenTomatoes
± [SPOILERS probably, i'm straight reacting to some anime events] I'm excited to see Shinso's progress. Deku's power and difficulty in controlling it is strating to have a little more explanation, aside form All Might's prodigious grasp --that One for All keeps previous quirks and makes them more potent, maybe even All Might's strength.
Who would've expected that my emotional moment this season would be triggered by feelings for Endeavor?? What is this intense character development?? TT_TT
Hawks is a surprisingly nuanced and complex character. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.
I see why some people would have disliked the My Villain Academia arc (i did miss seeing the kids). It's that it's bad at all, that Shigaraki and co are mirrors of class 1-A is well received, but it's just that the hero storylines and backstories are more interesting and easier to empathize with. Really the only of the League of Villains who i feel desire to empathize with are Twice (who really just had a shit lot in life), and Spinner a bit since he at least has some kind of twisted morality with following Stain. Also, Shigaraki's background, while still traumatic, with its kind of childhood misunderstanding and generational trauma and issues and bad quick manifestation timing, feels like it has less leeway for how evil he becomes in comparison with how decent a person Todoroki Shouto is. :)))
The League of Villains would seem pretty significant a threat from bringing down two larger, well-established villain groups, but really the 5 of them just took advantage of the situations. It was the heroes and police who took down Overhaul's group --still kind of disappointing for me but storywise they did have to resolve Deku and Lemillion's guilt-- with the League of Villains just causing chaos and ambushing an incapacitated Overhaul after the fact. And some fallacy in Re-Destro's overestimation and simultaneous underestimation of the League of Villains both revealed their location and made them possible to beat. He gave them their shonen moments. :)))

My Hero Academia (Season 6)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
My Hero Academia (Season 6, Japan, 2022-23)
Original creator: Kohei Horikoshi
Writer: Yosuke Kuroda
Mini-review:
I have to start this review by saying this has been the best season of My Hero Academia, without a doubt. The action parts were breathtaking and the dramatic parts were just pitch-perfect. It amazes me that, after such a long run, the show is still finding ways to top itself. Most of the action scenes are gorgeously animated, and pretty much all the emotional moments we got (which were many) hit me like a truck. But, as always, the characters are this show's strongest element. There are exceptions, obviously, but most of them are incredibly charming and you can't help but root for them in every situation. Seriously, I would watch absolutely anything that involves this set of characters.
In terms of plot, this season was really eventful, and we got some highly-awaited moments that delivered in every possible way, like Dabi's reveal and the whole Dark Hero arc. The show has been slowly spinning together a lot of fascinating themes and storylines, and I loved the way they all came together during these two arcs. The stakes are higher than ever before and I can't wait to see where it all goes from here. It kinda feels like the show will reach its ending in the near future, and I'm pretty sure it will go out with one hell of a bang. We are certainly in for a ride.
