I'm at episode 7 of IBO and I'm really enjoying it! So far it's one of the few Gundam shows where I genuinely have trouble finding something wrong with it (the only other one that I can think of is original MSG, at least around the same episode count), besides the usual in media res dive into a complex geopolitical mess that forced me to read the first episode summary to understand what I just saw.

But what I'm finding most noteworthy and funny is how many characters and elements are just "Gundam 00, but properly this time!". Mikazuki is kind of Setsuna with more personality, a jaded child-soldier who always seems half-aware at most of what's going on, Aina is very reminiscent of princess Marina, privileged lady advocating for the rights of an oppressed population who's forced to witness the horrors of war first-hand, then becomes a parent figure to a bunch of war orphans, there's a blonde ace pilot and his boyfriend from middle-management who see the Gundam thrash the ground level grunts, then bump into the protagonist without knowing his identity...

Plus the earth is divided into large economic blocs, and there's a large military peacekeeping force above it all, though the A-laws from 00 were already basically the Titans from Zeta. I'm already enjoying this more than 00 (review coming soon) but it's fun noticing the inspirations.

Ultimately, each of the Gundam meisters is on a quest for identity. Setsuna is from a country that no longer exists and a faith he no longer follows. Krugis was absorbed into Azadistan, and after his experiences as a child soldier, Setsuna no longer believes in a god or higher power. Lockon is from a country that has fought tooth and nail for its independence for centuries, and he has to watch his country slowly fade out of existence. While Neil undeniably cares for the rest of the Ptolemaios crew, he doesn’t know who he is outside his quest for revenge. Lyle steps into the shoes and cockpit of a dead man and every time his crew mates look at him, all they see is the ghost of the brother whose shadow he is trying to escape. Allelujah is perhaps the most obvious case, given his DID. He tries to suppress Hallelujah and keep his alter hidden, but when he accepts his alter he is even stronger than before. Tieria was created by a computer and has to discover who he wants to be aside from his programming, what being an Innovator means for him and how to be walk the line of being both Innovator and human.
