Ultimately, each of the Gundam meisters is on a quest for identity. Setsuna is from a country that no longer exists and a faith he no longer follows. Krugis was absorbed into Azadistan, and after his experiences as a child soldier, Setsuna no longer believes in a god or higher power. Lockon is from a country that has fought tooth and nail for its independence for centuries, and he has to watch his country slowly fade out of existence. While Neil undeniably cares for the rest of the Ptolemaios crew, he doesn’t know who he is outside his quest for revenge. Lyle steps into the shoes and cockpit of a dead man and every time his crew mates look at him, all they see is the ghost of the brother whose shadow he is trying to escape. Allelujah is perhaps the most obvious case, given his DID. He tries to suppress Hallelujah and keep his alter hidden, but when he accepts his alter he is even stronger than before. Tieria was created by a computer and has to discover who he wants to be aside from his programming, what being an Innovator means for him and how to be walk the line of being both Innovator and human.

MS Mechanical Bust GN-001 "Gundam Exia" Trans-Am ver. Full Set

Another Mechanical Bust! I really enjoyed the first one, and wanted to build another. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the specific gachapon machine anywhere close by. Luckily I found a set of Gundam Exia (Trans-Am version) online, and I was fortunate enough to get all three kits the first time.

Just like the MS Mechanical Bust Gundam Aerial, this kit comes in three potential parts: A clear bust, a solid bust, and a mechanical internal bust with lighting system. Knowing how Aerial went together ahead of time, I knew to mod the lights on the mechanical version ahead of time.

The green LED is super high quality and really makes the GN drive glow, although unfortunately it drowns out the neat writing detail on the trans-green piece.

I chose to put the clear parts (all in a really nice trans-pink) on one of the included extra display busts, which lacks a lot of the detail of the mechanical busts but allows you to build a bust kit no matter which one of the three options you get.

Just like the Aerial, this went together really nicely, although I found I had to glue some pieces to keep them securely in place, unlike with a proper gunpla kit.

The colour quality is really nice, and it sells the red Trans-Am glow pretty well. It also looks great lit up, although unfortunately I wasn't able to get the extra white LED to glow very brightly, making the eyes and other head units a little dull.

Regardless it was a really fun kit to build. I just wish it was a mainline series of model kits like SD Gunpla, rather than relying on gachapon mechanics. If I hadn't gotten lucky in getting one of each, I would've ended up with duplicates or be unable to build a proper bust kit with all the lighting and interior detail I wanted.

"The entire manga is about the mc moving to a new school and getting helped out by Yugami and then being like 'hey who is that guy' and all her classmates are like 'oh that's Yugami. He sucks.' And then she's like 'oh how sad everyone's bullying this guy :( I bet he's actually rlly nice since he helped me out' and then she tries to interact with him and. No actually he just sucks. The title is a reference to the fact that. He flat out refuses to make friends. People try a lot and he just rejects them. He's the ace of the baseball team but everyone hates his guts, INCLUDING his battery partner, who is just. Totally exasperated all the time. Anyways Yugami has a special interest in rakugou and will just. Recite rakugou. He does it in order to calm himself down during baseball games and everyone's like 'what.' He also jumps interests quite a bit? But every time he gets OBSESSED. There was a period where he was obsessed with building furniture. He cannot read social cues and he does not care. Like at all. He really likes structure! He makes a list every day of all the things he has to do and then checks them off. They have a school festival and he goes to every single exhibit. Just to check them off his list. Not even an actual visit. He pops in and immediately leaves. Someone will talk about some relationship issue and he's like 'just like in [rakugou].'"

Yasutora -

"People think he’s intimidating, but he’s one of the kindest characters in the show! He comes across as having a fairly flat affect with few expressions, and he’s often misinterpreted as being scary by others who don’t know him. He used to be aggressive, but chose to never fight unless protecting someone due to his abuelo’s influence, and I think he’s a low empathy flat affect icon!"

Taiyou -

"He befriends the main character through the power of autism (being completely unaware of the social cues telling him to avoid her and being extremely straightforward when complimenting her). He’s able to inadvertently twist any conversation by misinterpreting what people say, often taking things literally. The idea that someone doesn’t like this girl just Does Not Compute in his head. He’s astoundingly hyperempathetic, just the idea that he may have hurt someone made him burst into tears; and yet he seems to have difficulty reading other people’s emotions. And he has no sense of personal space at all. He’s a sweetheart and he makes up for every shitty “neurotypical person proves how nice they are by befriending the autistic person” trope."

Kai -

"I don’t think I can explain this in a convincing manner, but trust me it makes sense. For an (ex)assassin he is so bad a lying, he brings up details no one was talking about and ends up getting himself into trouble because of it. This is a massive spoiler, but I do think it’s really important to the point; during the first main game the cast are discussing the kitchen incident and whether or not Kai actually threatened Nao, causing her to attack Sou. During which they ask the question why? Why would Kai want Nao to do that, what would he get out of it? They eventually come to the conclusion that it’s because he was trying to steal the computer that Sou had found, and this immediately dooms Kai to his unfortunate fate. But the only reason they are able to get there is because Kai himself says ‘to steal something perhaps?’ when being questioned why he’d have it out for Sou. At that point it’s not even being bad a lying, there was no attempt to lie there he just said what happens in front of everyone and doomed himself. I love him but he’s not always the wisest. There’s something about even the main character thinking openly that he’s a bit weird. One of his first lines after being introduced is him worrying about the laundry he left hanging outside. They’ve been kidnapped and put in a death game and he’s worried about laundry. There something relatable about his limited facial expressions. His face doesn’t really change much unless he’s showing really big emotions, which makes him come across as really aloof and mysterious. The classic ’are you okay? you look sad’ face. Kai also won the most autistic Yttd character - excluding Gin- poll, so there’s that."

I think that insisting that Setsuna and Marina are love interests devalues a lot of the important aspects of their characters, actually.

A major theme of 00 is counterparts. Neil and Lyle Dylandy, Allelujah and Hallelujah, Tieria and Regene. Setsuna’s counterpart is Marina. They’re both young people who’ve seen the horrors of war and are fighting to change the world in whatever ways they can. Marina fights as a diplomat, trying to make people understand and by believing the best of people. Setsuna fights physically, because that’s all he knows how to do. They both believe humanity can be better than all the horrors, and they both seek an end to the fighting, but the way they seek that end is what sets them apart.

To some extent, Marina cares about Setsuna because his past is a future she is trying to avoid. He was thrown headlong into war and his country was absorbed by another, a fate she is fighting to keep from happening to Azadistan. A part of his suffering is because the government at that time was not speedy enough in finding a diplomatic solution. She feels responsible for the decision of the previous rulers of Azadistan, and Setsuna is a reminder of that responsibility.

To Setsuna, Marina is part of a hope for a brighter future. She is a way to undo some of the twistedness of the world. He reminds her that while she and the rest of the world’s governments were being diplomatic, his people were dying. He helps her in her peace efforts, and he frequently protects her. She protects the children at the Katharon base from experiencing the same horrors he experienced. He knows she’s fighting in a way he can’t.

Part of the beauty of their dynamic is that there isn’t anything romantic to it. To insist that they have the dynamic they do because they’re in love is to diminish the importance of all that. They both outright deny being partners when Feldt asks, and they don’t act the way any of the 00 couples or even other Gundam couples act. There is mutual respect and admiration, and Marina wishes he didn’t feel the need to fight, but they aren’t in love. And they don’t need to be.
