Damian and Melinda Thoughts
One panel of sxf that always confused me was the one where Melinda picks Damian up and immediate starts having these conflicting thoughts. It could just be my stupidity showing but I really don't understand Melinda and her relationship with her family. Only thing I was interested in over the Martha Henderson storyline was getting more info about Damian's family life but I doubt that's coming anytime soon
Anyways here is my person headcanon(?) about them that I intend on using for my fanfics (that will never be posted hehe).
tldr; Melinda never wanted Damian and has a hard time loving him because she associates him with pain.
An obvious guess would be some form of SA from her husband but honestly that perspective is a bit contrived and oddly over done. I am a bit tired of the "woman in loveless abusive marriage" trope so i really tried to come with a more interesting alternative.
I would like to think Melinda is actually interested in her husband and respects him and his ideologies to some extent. I also think a more interesting dynamic would be one where she is actually attracted to him, even if it was an arranged marriage overtime she gained interest in him.
She also does love Demetrius and was very happy to have him. Particularly due to the social response she got from having him (the heir to the Desmond Group). I also do think they are older parents so Demetrius may have came after a lot of suffering and pressure.
But obviously getting pregnant was not an easy process and the same would have been the case for Damian. And in his cases I'm guessing it was a real battle both emotionally and physically. I would also like to think she didn't want a second child and was satisfied with Demetrius alone, she didn't want to have to go though everything again but didn't have a choice.
In the end, Damian was an actual burden to her. A specifically unwanted child. The resent really built up when he was a small child and probably clingy and very needy. I also see him as the sickly type.
Additionally, some people may have caught onto her lack of interest in him and criticized her for it. She's overall seen as a poor mother but no one is actually interested in understanding why she feels the way that she does.
She does make an attempt to love him but she's still conflicted about the whole thing. She lacks that natural maternal connection and it leaves her feeling mixed about him.

Yor worrying that her disappearing because of her job would mean she betrayed the Forgers vs Yor realizing that the risk is worth protecting them.
Grey colours, the Forgers as she first met them having their backs at her with empty, disappointed faces, vs bright, warm colours, the Forgers as she now knows them facing her directly and smiling at her.
She starts the story feeling like an outcast, fearing that no-one, not even her brother, will accept her as she is. That people will turn their back on her, and her life will continue being colourless and lonely.
Then her life fills with colour, with people who will face her head-on and accept her. She develops into confidence that the Forgers care for her and is reminded that even if she ever has to leave because of her job, the knowledge that she protects innocent people...
and that this work of hers will be acknowledged...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... is enough to give her the strength to carry on.

I think what’s interesting to me about Yor is that Yor Briar/Forger isn’t just a front to hide Thorn Princess, that Thorn Princess alone isn’t her “true self,” nor is Yor Briar/Forger alone her “true self.” They both make up her. She’s compassionate. She may be a bit aloof, but she’s also very intelligent and knows the best place to attack someone to kill them as quickly as possible. I think that makes her a very wonderful character.

I get anime-only complaining about the lack of assassin Yor screen time after 25 episodes of the anime. However, to downplay her role in the series since, as they say, she only became the "housewife" in the story is to miss the point of Yor's character entirely. She finally has the chance to be "normal" and to be appreciated outside of her just killing people. Loid and Anya are both aware and focused on the mission such that their interactions with others might still be less genuine (Loid with his family and Anya with Damian). For Yor, her every interaction with other people seems to be more sincere since the only thing she hides is her true job but not who she is. She also has no underlying motives. That's why Yor's relationship with Anya as her mother and to Loid as his wife are probably one of the most genuine relationship Anya and Loid have in the series since Yor never pretends or hold back in caring for them. Yor trying to be a mother and a wife is also a start and a step for her to develop and see her own worth as a person and not just a tool for the Garden. This development, of course, is still incomplete but it is one of the development I look forward the most in the story.
Of course, I also want more assassin Yor (can't wait for S2!) but at the end, the assassin and spy part are less important than the central theme of the whole story which is the family itself. It spice things up for sure, but I don't think fans like me stuck around this long in the story just to see Loid and Yor be badass and kick some ass. Yes, it could be part of the reasons but not the main one (at least for me).
I do agree though that Endo could have written more Yor killing scenes in the pre-Cruise arc (there is one with her in the butt-shot date but that didn't make it into the anime). But I also feel like Endo didn't because it will shift the tone of the story and could be harder to support Yor to be a part of this family (especially in the manga with how sketchy and ambiguous the Garden's allegiance and methods seem to be). Of course, he could have written Yor not to be an assassin, that's a valid criticism, but it does take away from the fun and potential angst (and seriously, people will still have the same complaints about Yor being just a housewife). And given that he already written her to be an assassin and the series took off more than he expected, I think Endo might have realized too late the responsibility on his part and the conflict it arises to him in a moral aspect. The thing is, I think Endo does not seem to like killing for the sake of just killing. He could only pass murdering people as comedic and lighthearted for only so long since, afterall, murder does require some moral dilemma to justify it. Even for a comedy series, this might feel gratuitous if he kept Yor killing people and the Japanese audience might seemed less inclined if he took this direction (I remember some Japanese tweets pointing out the way the main mcs in Buddy Daddies just kill people without any moral implications on their part. Perhaps the delivery is too lighthearted for them since there seemed to be less complaints regarding this outside Japan).
Anyway, these are something to think about regarding Endo's choice to not include more Yor assassin scenes pre-Cruise arc. I think the criticisms of assassin Yor in the early part of the series are valid but simply dismissing it as poor character writing on Yor's part is not really seeing the entire picture at all. Moreover, with how Endo is setting up Yor and the Garden in the manga, we might actually explore the gray area of Yor's profession, and its eventual conflict in her role in the Forger family. The manga is not even 100 chapters yet and it is a slow burn in plot and character relationships. Yor is just not there to be stabby stabby. She is a character on her own right and I think people should appreciate her more than just being the hot, assassin mom/wife.

"The incest part of spy x family ruins it" SHUT UP, your wrong, Yuri Briar is a complex character and to put it as a "weird incest thing" is wrong.
First, Yuri has never implied he wanted any sexual relations with his sister, the most he has said is he loves her and wants to marry her, and that isnt weird if you put in the context that Yuri and Yor are both children who suffered from the war. They didnt have parents to take care of them, that burden was put onto Yor as the older sibling. Yuri looks up to her for that and wants to prove to Yor that he can protect them too. Yuri doesnt understand the complexities of love because he was never taught it, he loves his sister and wants to protect her and has gotten his feelings confused for wanting to marry her. "but hes so weird around loid" IN HIS CHILDHOOD IT WAS ONLY HIM AND HIS SISTER HE IS GOING TO HAVE TROUBLE TRUSTING OTHERS.
They grew up in a war, A WAR. Thats going to have a mental toll on your character, Yuri has taken this by wanting to protect who he loves. Yuri doesnt have anyone outside of Yor he is going to be confused on what his love means.
Loid has mentioned how he is jealous of Yors and Yuris relationship because its so close, and they have eachother to rely on, something Loid didnt get as a child. Loid doesnt see Yuri as a threat to him and Yor.
You can see how he grows through the story and accepts that Yor has found another person to trust and rely on and he doesnt have to carry that burden alone. He has slowly been letting go and giving Loid a chance to be there for Yor and Loid has proven he can and will be there for her, and yuri is grateful and even takes up tutoring Anya, it doesnt work out but he still tries to be supportive to his sister.
In conclusion Yuri briar did not ruin the plot of spy x family with a weird incest trope, if you look at the dialoge and think deeper in on the story, you can observe Yuris growth as a person.
apologies if this doesnt make sense i just hate people who missread the story of Yuris character

Real talk: the fact that Anya expects to read Demetrius’ mind but sees nothing is kind of sad because Demetrius saw his 6yo brother approach and congratulate him, and had zero thoughts in his brain. But that doesn’t mean Demetrius doesn’t care about him. When Damian stutters, Demetrius initiates conversation by talking about Damian’s grades, showing that he indeed pays attention.
Demetrius seems almost resentful by Damian’s insistence to impress Donovan, giving out a snarky, passive aggressive, teen appropriate response: “How would I know? It’s not as if I’m in regular contact with him.” This is like the passive aggressive version of whatever is going on with Melinda. Damian is a relatively innocent 6yo kid seeking his father’s approval, but both his mother and his brother appear to be seriously affected (in a bad way) by Donovan, and they avoid talking about Donovan even as Damian repeatedly mentions him. Demetrius doesn’t understand Damian’s desire for their father’s approval. He also doesn’t understand his father, hinting at some sort of disconnect between them.
What also saddens me a bit is how Demetrius barely acknowledged Damian’s friends talking to him. Like, they’re six year old kids trying to make a good impression. Still, Demetrius didn’t completely ignore them, just gave a meaningless “oh” and decided to stop thinking about people. It’s very much giving “stressed (and depressed) to the point of apathy”. When facing the innocence (ignorance?) and optimism of 6yo kids, Demetrius doesn’t understand. (And maybe he doesn’t understand friendship, which is what Damian has?)
I mentioned before that characters Anya met are probably “good” characters on the side of Forgers or at least are sympathetic to readers. Because if Anya met a “bad” character and read their mind, she would be too OP and the plot could be quickly solved. It’s like how we all thought Melinda was suspicious when she met Yor, but then Anya met Melinda and read her mind to reveal that she cares about Damian (even if it’s in a twisted way). Demetrius is interesting because he subverts what I said above by thinking very little, so Anya cannot really read him. But so far, I think his portrayal is that of a typical middle schooler with middle school angst, and he cares about Damian even if he has zero thoughts on his brain (and doesn’t like the way Damian craves fatherly approval). He is still a child and presumably a victim of his father’s parenting.
The framing is also interesting. Damian telling his friends to go on without him while he waits for Demetrius. The panel of Demetrius towering over a stuttering Damian. Demetrius going away, showing a panel of him as a small figure in an otherwise blank background. That panel when Anya thinks Damian’s relatives are weird has her looking at Damian while he’s some distance away from her (and the rest of his friends). The brothers feel disconnected. Damian is both eager and nervous to talk to Demetrius. Demetrius is nonchalant and apathetic, but not impolite or outwardly wholly dismissive.
Given Damian’s wacky family situation, I’m glad he has friends at Eden. Ewen and Emile of course are steadfast and loyal companions, always eager to back up their beloved boss man. Anya can read his mind and she knows about his insecurities (and also his weird family).
Becky is also good as a friend because she doesn’t care about sucking up to Damian, she often calls him out, but she also supports Damian when he deserves it. A sweet scene here is Damian saying he’s a Desmond so he’s expected to get a star, and Becky adding “it’s still a great achievement. Congrats!”. Becky is validating his success and telling Damian it’s okay to be proud and happy for himself. Even though she’s usually judgemental towards Damian, she’s still kind to him because that’s who she is as a character.
In the end, Damian still wants his father’s attention. He had no idea Demetrius wasn’t that close to their father… I would assume Demetrius spent most of his time at Eden and this is Damian’s first year at Eden, so he actually gets to interact with his brother instead of hearing things about him?
So far, Demetrius seems like a very jaded character in contrast to Damian who feels like a beam of sunshine now. He’s the heir so he’s got more troubles. But it’s nice that he’s finally debuted and no longer in mystery. Can’t wait to see what Endo has in store for him :)

spy x family bad ends are so interesting but something that gives me some comfort is that even if Loid does leave or fake his death after his mission is over….anya still won’t be alone. she has becky, she has damian, and more importantly she has yor.
yor would absolutely raise her and take her in. she loves anya like her own and would never abandon her. that’s her baby. that’s her daughter. she would absolutely raise anya on her own.
and god forbid if yor did die (she’s untouchable tho let’s be fr), becky would not let her best friend be alone for sure. she’d make the blackbells adopt her.
my point is….anya has a supportive system. she has people to fall back on. she has people who love her. and I hope she fully realizes that.

SxF headcanon of the day:
Growing up Yuri was interested in world travel. He had a big book that was this overly detail atlas, he can name just about every country in the world and knows all kinds of random facts about them. He actually studied geography as his minor in university (major in foreign affairs). His main goal was that when he grew up he'd be able to take his sister to see all the cool places he saw in the maps except Yor hates travelling so it was impossible to convince her to go so he never really got the chance.
One day he got an offer to go Japan and Yor was already feeling so overstimulated from Anya she could not stomach flying with Yuri to a new country so she convinced him to take Anya so she can be free but he actually ended up having a lot fun with Anya. It was healing for him since he never got the opportunity to travel as a child so seeing Anya do it made he feel wonderful and now he actually wants to take her travel and see all the places he wanted to see.
Now she's like his little travel buddy. Not just going abroad but just doing anything really. Like he took he drag racing, sport games, literally anywhere he's going he just nabs Anya and takes her with him. They fight the entire time but it's still fun

♡ don’t cry baby ♡
word count: 0.7k
pairing: stepbrother anakin x fem reader
WARNINGS: NSFW (18+), stepcest, dryhumping, reader is drunk, stepbrother anakin being soft as fuck, i think that’s it???
plot: stepbrother anakin got mad at his stepsister and feels bad so he tries to cheer her up
a/n: short lil thing to test the waters. this is the first smuttyish thing i’ve posted in three years??? i can’t tell if i like this or hate it. anyways, enjoy. maybe more will come.
Tumblr media
anakin couldn’t stand to see his step sister upset. he’d just chewed her out for the last hour when he caught her sneaking back into her bedroom via window after staying out all night at a frat house party. he lectured her about the clothes she wore or should he say “the clothes she wore that barely covered her fucking body” and the boys she surrounded herself with cause he knew what they were thinking, he could practically hear what they probably thought when she waltzed into that house.
he didn’t mean to make you cry, he would never do that. he cared about you too much and hated seeing you upset. it broke his heart to see your pretty face covered in tears. he pulled you into his lap and wrapped his arms around your waist, planting kisses along your forehead, nose and cheeks trying to get you to cheer up.
“no baby- please don’t cry, you know what it does to me” anakin said softly as he tucked your hair behind your ear and wiped a tear away from your cheek. he studied your face to see if he could see even a glimmer of happiness in your glossy eyes.
he knew the alcohol you consumed was probably a huge contribution as to why you were so upset. you not so gracefully stumbled through your bedroom window smelling like a brewery. but fuck, if he didn’t raise his voice you probably would be peacefully sleeping by now.
“i didn’t mean to make you angry ani” you said in between sobs “please don’t be angry at me” you looked down at your hands anxiously.
“i’m not mad at you baby” he said sounding defeated as he cupped your face, making you look back up at him in his eyes. “you just stress me the fuck out sometimes” he chuckled lightly, wiping another tear away. his thumb went down to your pouty lips, tracing them lightly.
anakin’s hands went down to yor hips, guiding you to grind slowly against him. anakin knew this was something he could always count on to make his step sister feel better. it wasn’t morally wrong because they technically weren’t having sex. but, maybe that was just something he made up in his head to push away his guilt.
“come on baby, i wouldn’t be doing this if i was mad at you” he said softly. you nodded your head in agreement, beginning to rock your hips on your own.
anakin let out a low grunt as your head leaned back in pleasure, biting your bottom lip in the way that drove him crazy in the best way possible. anakin placed his hand on your lower back to support you from falling backwards, his other hand snaked up to under your skirt, cupping your ass and giving it a light squeeze.
“ani- it feels so good” you whined, feeling the familiar sensation growing in your stomach, like you were at the top of a rollercoaster, about to swiftly go down the steep drop. anakin eyes widened at the way your face contorted, the way he’s seen too many times to count. he quickly grabbed you by the back of the head, tangling his fingers in your hair as he crashed your lips together to muffle your moans as your climax took over every sensation in your body, your brain becoming completely empty, the only thoughts being the pleasure washing down on you and anakin. your nails dug into his arms as your hip movements became sloppier against his stiff cock under his sweatpants, the overwhelming feeling fucking up your rhythm. his muffled moans matched yours as your climax pushed him over the edge, making him shoot ropes of cum into his pants. your legs went limp causing you to slow down your movements until you came to a complete stop on top of him, shaky and out of breath you pulled away from his kiss, looking at him with a light, tired smile on your face.
“baby, you know i love the sound of you moaning but shit, imagine if your daddy heard you cumming all over my lap.” he said in a whisper, a smirk growing on his face.
“feeling better?”

Idk I just really like that Twilight's reaction to being told "Your wife used to be a prostitute!" is to go like
Tumblr media
and proceed to say how honourable and worthy of respect her dedication, self-sacrifice and mental fortitude are, and how we're shown he actually means that.
And then my girl Yor sees his reaction and hears his words and for the first time in her life she goes like "This is a man who literally just met me and has no connection to me yet he not only understands my position, he's also willing to bring himself out there and have my back when other people have free bait to judge me" and like damn how important that was to her, to have someone (who doesn't owe his survival to her like Yuri does) actually see her and respect her choices and have the absolute BEST of faiths in her. Like, what Camilla says there has the societal power to make her look like a pariah. Yet this dude comes over and without knowing anything about her, he vouches for her and immediately assumes her reasons were noble and altruistic. And though he doesn't know what profession he's actually vouching for, he's completely right in his assumption about her intentions, and considering how easily the general public judges sex workers, it's no surprise this support gives Yor the courage to believe Loid will understand her and won't think bad of her if she ever disappears on them due to her work, because he's open-minded enough for his first and immediate assumption about her is that she has good intentions.
And I just wanna SCREAM because she has absolutely no idea how little he will judge her about her assassin gig. She already considers herself lucky she's come across someone who is compassionate enough to think the best out of someone who works in a profession that is not considered "morally acceptable" by the public. But she has no idea the actual jackpot she's hit, because his own profession is far more dark and sinister yet he still has the kindness and empathy in his heart to understand people who do the same as he does.
Like, that's it with her character, isn't it? She sacrificed her own youth and morality to help Yuri grow up and be educated, and that caused him to idolize her, and because he was the only family she had left, she has been desperate to not cause any of her ties with him to break. But it also caused her impostor syndrome, and she had no confidence in any of her abilities aside from killing and cleaning up after her work, because she lives in a misogynistic society that is suspicious of unmarried women (like, that judgment alone, considering unmarried men don't experience such scrutiny, can be enough to damage a woman's psyche) and because she has been working under a man cruel enough to hire orphaned teenagers as assassins and nearly kill them in tests of their abilities ever since she was a teenager. For her it was either "I'm either perfect in something or I'm completely useless and I deserve people's judgment". Because if Yuri sees she doesn't have the perfect record, she thinks he will be horrified and she'll lose the ties to her last remaining family. And she will think she deserved that. If her killing skills waver in the slightest, she will be killed, either by enemies or by the Shopkeeper doing his little "tests". And she will think she deserved that. And if she doesn't abide by the society's expectations, she will at best be judged and mocked (for not cooking at home) and at worst get arrested (for being suspected as a spy). And she will think she deserved that.
Yet again, this stranger comes along, is told she's worked a socially shameful profession, knows she's shy and with so few connections that she can't even find someone to act as her pretend boyfriend for a party, and he supports her. And then he finds out how socially unskilled she is, how terrible she is at cooking, how she can't even pretend to kiss him for their mutual benefit, how she has the tendency to get so drunk she accidentally kicks him unconscious... And those things that she considers fatal flaws of her, he says are parts of her that she doesn't need to pretend don't exist. That's who she is, and there's nothing to fix, and she can just accept them without feeling bad or ashamed of it, that pretending she's someone else, someone perfect, will only make her miserable and exhausted.
And like... fuck. How can she not feel glad she got to marry that guy?
Tumblr media
And how much will her heart break when she finds out he's a spy and will immediately doubt all the supportive words he's told her? And how astonishing will it be when she finds out that he actually meant pretty much everything he's told her, and that he really resonates with her and believes in her?
(anime only here, don't spoil me for the manga)

I think other than the family aspect of this series. One thing I really like about this is the idea of two broken individuals who through not their choices but circumstances are now bonding over a little girl. Loid is a broken soldier that lose everything he had, forced into becoming a spy to accomplish a world where kids don’t cry while Yor became a killer to support her brother and get rid of pests that harms the world. And them coming together, healing one another while preventing that tragedy around Anya as best as they can just hits the right buttons. tl;dr I want them to be happy, okay?

The noise all around has you reeling. You’re not used to so many people. So many voices and smells and sights. The frantic action of it all reminds you of a mid-00s movie about a high school. The coeds are like animals milling about in groups with the odd single body rushing between with a mission stitched between their brows.
You sit with your thermos of tea and try to focus on your schedule. You have a campus map from the Student Support Centre next to it, trying to map out your route for each day. Momma said you should try to get ahead, figure out where you’re going. She’s always right.
You have two classes that day. As you find the buildings on the map, planting a finger on each, you find that they are on completely different ends of the campus. Of course. Well, momma didn’t know that where they would be, did she? She said you have to balance your load; if you’re going to be an English major, make sure you take some math and science for your electives.
You circle the two buildings and put lets beside them denoting which day you need to be there, numbering them in the order the classes occur. A burst of laughter breaks your concentration and you look around, trying to find the source. You almost miss the calm isolation of your childhood living room.
No, you’re grown now and you begged Momma to let you go to college. Not online, but in person. You even worked all summer at the deli so you could live in a dorm. She was proud but worried. She’s never been good at letting go. She’s already called three times today and it’s not even noon.
As the crowd blurs around you, a sudden gust blows over the table as someone sits across from you. You stare back at them with a gasp. They must’ve mistaken you for someone else. You blink as the man tugs on the front of his letterman jacket and smiles. He doesn’t seem mistaken.
“Hey,” he leans forward on an elbow, “you waitin’ for someone? Got some cute girlfriends on their way?”
He’s so forward, he has your brows as high as they can go and your cheeks are on fire. It’s not much of an introduction.
“Excuse me?” You eke out.
“Ah, I’m sorry, hon, I’m getting ahead of myself,” he smirks as he crosses both his arms on the table. “I’m Colin. You looked lonely.”
“Oh, uh, I’m just... figuring out my schedule,” you utter dumbly. Yor brain isn’t clicking. Why is he talking to you?
Your ears tweak and you notice a group in similar jackets, sitting just across the dining area, gabbing loudly, snickering. You wonder why he isn’t over there with them. You wiggle your pen anxiously.
“Ah, you’re not gonna give me a name for that pretty face?” He says.
“Huh?” Your brows drop, “what?”
Your momma’s voice echoes in your head. ‘Be careful of those college boys. They only want one thing.’ You didn’t believe her. They don’t want that from you. You were sure once you saw the other girls in their tight leggings and short tops.
“Your name, baby? Gotta be something sweet, huh?”
Your face ripples as you wade through surprise, confusion, then something else. You’re almost giddy. This man, with his mussed blond hair and bright blue eyes, and his chiseled features, is asking you your name. It’s flattering.
“Mauve,” you can’t help but smile as you answer.
“Oh, yeah? That’s pretty, well, Mauve,” he takes out his phone, “me and my buddies are having a party tonight and we’re supposed to find a hottie to bring with us. I’m having no luck but if I show up alone, well... I might not get to stay in the frat. You get it?”
You stare at him. You're confused. You don’t really understand frats and whatnot. They just seem like clubs people join so they can drink.
“You wanna do me a favour? Come with me?” He asks.
He’s bold. Bolder than any one you’ve ever met. You sputter but can’t come up with any words.
“Please,” he pouts, “promise, I won’t try anything, I just gotta get these guys off my back.”
He looks over his shoulder at the table of rowdy guys. You squirm in your seat, uncertain. You’ve never been to a party. Wow.
“Here, I’ll get your number,” he taps on his phone screen, “I’ll send you the details--”
“Leave her alone,” a grizzly voice undercuts the frat across from you.
A thick man stands behind him. He has a cardboard cup in his hand as he glares down at the coed. His burly figure is swathed in a dark green sweater and grey slacks. He’s older and his dark curls are threaded with subtle twinkles of silver.
“Huh? Who the hell are you?”
“Why don’t you show her those pictures you were snapping of her? The ones you and your pals were laughing about?” The other man growls.
You frown. What? You don’t understand what’s going on. You look from one to the other. The younger man sat across from your sighs and rolls his eyes.
“Fuck it. Whatever. Lots of pigs to go around,” he shakes his head and stands, facing the other man. “You know, bro, just cause you’re too old to get with any ass around here, doesn’t mean you gotta ruin it for others.”
“Get out of here,” the thicker man snarls. The other winces just slightly before puffing up his chest and stomping away.
You remain as you are, aghast and lost. The man with the dark curls looks at you. You shrug at him.
“I’m sorry, sir, did I do something wrong?” You ask.
The harsh angles of his scowl ease and he lets out a long breath, “uh, no, not you. That boy, you know, any one that wears one of those jackets, they’re no good. Just some advice.”
“Oh, right,” you look over at that guy, Colin, “sorry, I didn’t know. He just started talking to me. I was being polite.”
“Seem like a nice girl. Just tryna look out for you.”
“Yeah, thanks,” you chew your lip and sniff. “Are you... are you teacher?”
“I’m a professor,” he confirms as he holds his cup close to his chest. He's one of the biggest men you’ve ever seen. And his eyes are as blue as the ocean. “Professor Marshall but unless you’re a psych student, you can call me Walter.”
“Walter? My neighbour is Walter. At home. He’s eighty-one and he collects baseball cards,” you let yourself smile. You always felt more comfortable around older people. You never had many friends your own age.
“Don’t mind some baseball myself,” he dips his chin. “Well, you look out for yourself and avoid the Greeks.”
“Greeks?” You make a face.
“Fraternities,” he says. “And sororities, if you can help it.”
“Oh, okay. Thank you, sir,” you feel a little better. You think he’s right and he is a professor. He would know. “I’ll do that.”
“Sir? It’s Walter,” he corrects you.
“Oh, sorry, Walter,” you smile. “I’m Mauve.”
He nods and shifts his cup, “Mauve,” he repeats, “well, nice to meet you.”
“You too, sir, er, Walter. Thank you,” you say.
He hesitates then steps back on his heel, “yeah, no problem.”
He slowly retreats and you watch him, your heart playing like a drum. You did it. You spoke to strangers and you didn’t melt. Things are getting easier. If you could get through that, you’re sure you’ll make lots of friends in your classes.

Based on my post about how JP fans interpret ch58 to be the “true ending” of the Cruise Arc.
Putting these two scenes side by side really does support the interpretation that Loid’s words for Bond can be seen as a reply to Yor’s resolve. Yor has people that would be heartbroken if she died. It breaks my heart that Yor doesn’t see her worth yet despite vowing to protect the people she loves.
Of course, Loid’s words also applies to himself. He is not just a “war dog” anymore. He’s also part of the Forgers and his family would be sad if something happened to him.

Yor's Wisdom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A significant part of Yor's character is that she's often quite ditzy. Her life as a child assassin dedicated to raising her brother has made her over optimized for violence and little else. Twilight, meanwhile, is dedicated for flexibility. Of being everything and anything. Someone who can do it all. So, quite often, we see Yor's weak spots far more often than Twilight's. It's easy to write her off as nothing but an airhead. A kind, strong airhead, but an airhead nonetheless. So it's these moments of poignant wisdom that really ground her. This, here, is a moment where Twilight deeply needs her support, and it's not undercut by her bumbling around, trying earnestly but still failing. She brings him back down to earth.
I remember the chapter where her coworkers comment on her transformation from a cold robot of a woman, to a far more bright and energetic person as a consequence of this arrangement, and I think this is her way of giving back. Twilight's not a robot either. She might not get people all too well, but there's some emotional intelligence—especially after the Cruise Arc—where she clearly understands the bigger picture. Twilight gets lost in the details and Yor's a woman who often struggles to grasp them. It's easy to see his hypercompetence tower over her, but she truly is the rock he so often needs.
