OMG finally a trailer for this I don't loathe!
It's still not going to be anything like the novel, which is amazing but is all about a former noblewoman fallen on hard times being coerced by circumstances to become a mistress of a cold upper class man who doesn't really see her or any other woman as truly human and then has to cope with developing feelings and realizing she sees him as nothing but a wallet and can't stand him, and rightly so. That novel was surprisingly clear eyed about the bleak options and lack of power faced by period women and censors would never let its topics fly. Too bad, it's a great character study tbh, and while I can't say I ever loved either of the protagonists as people, they were really neat, complex characters to read about (ML's painful realization arc is glorious, mmm.)

Something something cycle of revenge lang ying unleashes a horrific curse upon innocent people because of the deaths of his loved ones and he dresses it up as justified and kingly, for his people and a better kingdom, yet holes up in his castle after the war with the trapped resentful spirits of his wife and son, surrounded by accolades and riches, ultimately dying to a mockery of what he truly wanted, his wife and son returned to him
And xie lian, on the verge of continuing the cycle, watches it happen

Pei Ming Week Day 4: Sacrifice
Today I give you 3 drabbles because I went from having no ideas to multiple ideas! xD
Huge thank you to @kefis for the prompts @ococor for cheerleading <3
The first two are sort of related, the last one is not
I.
“I still say we should be helping Xianle,” Pei Ming grumbles. “This is disgraceful.” “Yong’an is the practical choice,” Rong Guang replies. “Xianle’s fall is a given. May as well farm goodwill with the future king.” Xianle has their prince, Pei Ming wants to retort, but the words taste like bile. Once again, his mind is dragged to Yushi, to the beloved queen that won her kingdom a scant few months. Already they don’t speak of her. Is Xianle’s god-pleasing prince doomed to the same fate? Rong Guang pats his shoulder. “There’s nothing praiseworthy about self-sacrifice. You should remember that.”
II.
“For his Highness,” the scrawny excuse of a soldier mutters as he swings his splintered practice sword. So young, head wrapped in bandages, a sword slipping from his grip, and still ready to sacrifice everything for some prince. There are many things Pei Ming wants to say to him. Dozens of scoldings, criticisms of his priorities – “Hey,” he called out despite himself. “Your sword grip is wrong.” Pei Ming gives some pointers and leaves, saluting the soldier in his heart. He doesn’t know why he’s bothering. This child won’t survive the battlefield anyway. His prince will never know his sacrifice.
III.
“How could you do this?” Pei Ming shouts. “This is your future – your divinity! How could you just throw it all away? And for a girl!” Pei Xiu forehead smacks against the ground. “I have no regrets, General,” he pleads, voice quivering with emotion unfelt in two hundred years. “She sacrificed everything for my ambitions. She never deserved her fate. Even if I’m to be a disappointment in your eyes, this path for her freedom is a small price – please understand.” Pei Ming does not understand. Despite being heralded as the God of Love, he’s not much of a romantic.
#tgcf#pei ming#hua cheng#rong guang#pei xiu#peimingweek2023#fortune's fanfics#i'm in love with the idea of xuli politicking in the xianle/yongan conflict#pm & rg there to assess the situation and help organize the soldiers#pm hates it and thinks they should be supporting xianle over a rebellion#rg is taking notes for his future rebellion#meanwhile in regards to pei xiu pm is all for grand gestures of love but not when it's his grand-grand-nephew#and not when its career suicide. he's a practical god of love!

Two eps in and I am adoring this.
It has close to nothing in common with the novel except the character names, but it has that awesome Harlequin romance vibe that I adore.
The visuals are GORGEOUS!!!! They turned ML from a realistic period upper class man (who believes lower classes and women aren't really human and are there only to serve him; the deliciousness of the novel is his slow and painful realization that this is not the case, as least as far as FL is concerned) into a dreamboat tenderly protecting FL from wannabe rapists and FL from weak in a lot of ways but emotionally in terms of whether she likes ML or just uses him for money hard as nails woman but ehhhh...whatever. I never hoped for more than a swoony romance from an adaptation and I get this:
This also joins the growing list of dramas that inexplicably have goofy comedic trailers while being nothing like that in reality. I completely do not get the point of that marketing tbh - don't you want to attract an audience who will actually enjoy what you made? Anyone drawn in by goofy trailers would be mad and peace out and people like me who'd enjoy the drama will pass it by - I almost didn't check it out because I hated the early trailers so.

of course, the catch is that i bet xie lian put fangxin in his parent's tomb, and i already said in fic that he thought it too dangerous to bring wuming's tablet there, so either i own up to forgetting fangxin in chapter 1 or i have to come up with something else. shit.
#pls imagine how xie lian returning to his parents tomb for fangxin#so that he could go be the teacher for the crown prince of yongan went#illuspeaks#ghost marriage au

So I was rewatching Season 2, Episode 6 of TGCF/Heaven Official's Blessing and something that didn't caught my eye the first time around was the look that Feng Xin and Mu Qing has after Xie Lian is escorted to be under house arrest in his palace.
It's like they both know that whatever Xie Lian says about killing the Yongan royal family it's either not entirely true or there is something that's not adding up. They may have their differences but they both know Xie Lian enough to know that he's definitely hiding something. And with the political affairs of the Heavenly court, neither of them could blame him.
Which makes me think that their visit to Xianle palace was to help him and get the truth from Dianxie so that they may assist him once again. It's really telling that Mu Qing is able to see through Xie Lian's act and Feng Xin doesn't deny that he is right. Instead Feng Xin intentionally instigates a fight between him and Mu Qing.
Now, I just want to say that it is entirely possible that they just get caught up in their squabbles and Xie Lian had been out of heaven for 800 years so he wouldn't have noticed how much Feng Xin and Mu Qing changed during that time.
And maybe a part of me is just overthinking this - but in this instance I don't think that their fight was simply because of a squabble but was planned.
Think about it - nobody would question if these two ended up arguing or fighting. The only reason why I find it suspicious was because of Xie Lian's internal monologue saying that it is odd. But had it been anyone else in heaven nobody would think it strange that these two are fighting. As a matter of fact no junior official that was standing guard even bothered to go inside to investigate why it seems there's a commotion because it's common knowledge that Feng Xin and Mu Qing in a confined space would end up in a fight.
And that was the point.
They both know how many spies heaven has and they both know Xie Lian is clearly protecting a secret that would explain everything, but he can't say anything because of a better reason. And the only way they could get him to spill the beans to them while keeping everyone else out of the way is if their fight induced Xie Lian to confess what is really going on. Only the two of them would know the secret and Xie Lian would be safe to share it because it would be masked by the commotion of their fighting.
And then Hua Cheng initiates his abduction of Xie Lian and they immediately stop and work as a team. Their differences in how they report to the rest of the heavenly court on his abduction might just be to keep up appearances.
But maybe that's just me overthinking. But this is my headcanon now.
