Tecklenburg 2015: Yngve Gasoy Romdal as Bustopher, Benjamin Eberling as Jennyanydots, and Stephan Luethy as Skimbleshanks.

A touch of Tecklenburg Bustopher for day 7 of Jellicle ships month. But is it Jennyphershanks, or Bustofood?
Jenny and Skimble are very impressed by his eating technique. Meanwhile, poor Admetus (the green clown who is being the chair) is merely (im)pressed by his and Jenny's combined... gravity.

The priests have reached the limits of their abilities. Time to send the prisoner up the ladder. Time for the first meeting between "Pilate and Christ."
(Note: In the song by song analysis links list, I group this and "Herod's Song" together, because that's how the score has always banded them when licensed. ...yeah, no recording has ever done it like that. So I'll cheat with individual links for each song, while still technically considering them one in the list. 'Kay? 'Kay.)
Today's performance is brought to you by the 2003 Bad Hersfelder Festspiele cast. The late Jimmie Earl Perry brings strength to Pilate in this number that I really enjoy.
Don't be a lump; hit the jump!
The Lyrics
PILATE WHO IS THIS BROKEN MAN CLUTTERING UP MY HALLWAY? WHO IS THIS UNFORTUNATE?
SOLDIER SOMEONE CHRIST KING OF THE JEWS
PILATE OH, SO THIS IS JESUS CHRIST I AM REALLY QUITE SURPRISED YOU LOOK SO SMALL NOT A KING AT ALL WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU ARE NEWS BUT ARE YOU KING, KING OF THE JEWS?
JESUS THAT'S WHAT YOU SAY
PILATE WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? THAT IS NOT AN ANSWER YOU'RE DEEP IN TROUBLE FRIEND SOMEONE CHRIST KING OF THE JEWS
HOW CAN SOMEONE IN YOUR STATE BE SO COOL ABOUT YOUR FATE? AN AMAZING THING THIS SILENT KING
SINCE YOU COME FROM GALILEE THEN YOU NEED NOT COME TO ME YOU'RE HEROD'S RACE! YOU'RE HEROD'S CASE!
CROWD HO-HOSANNA HEYSANNA SANNA SANNA HOSANNA HEYSANNA HO AND HOW HEY J C J C PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME YOU HAD EVERYTHING WHERE IS IT NOW?
The Plot
Good Friday, as it will come to be known, begins with a bang. Jesus is brought in by Roman guards and shoved to his knees before Pilate, who makes a grand entrance and sarcastically comments on Jesus' tattered appearance. However, as Jesus comes from Galilee, Pilate does not feel that he comes under his jurisdiction and instructs the guards to take him to Herod, the puppet "king" of Jesus' home region (more a mid-level local politician, really), while the mob derides him. (He's dodging the issue for a moment. Technically correct, but clearly a dodge.)
The Analysis
We return to an oft-repeated theme here as we move through Act II. Who knows why a crowd will turn on the man whose praises they were singing earlier in the week? Some theorize that they turned on Jesus for not using his power against the Romans. To others, the title of the show represents Judas' point of view: the idea that Jesus had become a "superstar," a shallow, hyped personality worshiped merely for the hype, like many celebrities of the show's time and ours. And anyone who watches the news, even badly, knows how often we build 'em up and tear 'em down. A fickle lot, we are.
This is underlined by Andrew Lloyd Webber's trademark use of irony in the choice of melodic motif, to dramatic effect. Pilate takes over Caiaphas' main theme from "Hosanna," followed by the crowd re-using their music from the same song, this time expressing the exact opposite sentiment from the first time they sang this melody; this time they want him dead.
Later Lyrical Differences
Over the years, minor changes have been made to "Pilate and Christ," none of which have materially affected its state like the more controversial revisions in other places. In the 1973 film, a minor adjustment (in italic) was made to a rhetorical question that Pilate posed to both Jesus and others in the room: "How can someone in your state / Be so cool about his fate?" It's better grammatically, and made its way into the currently licensed score, as did re-assigning the soldier's solo line to Annas, a choice made in either the 1996 London revival or whichever production immediately followed it.
Another adjustment made for the 1973 film -- changing Jesus' response to Pilate's initial question to "Your words, not mine" -- was never formally made part of the show, but many performers, especially Ted Neeley, use it instead of what's there. "That's what you say," while biblically accurate (which, shocking as it may be to its protesters then and now, anything not taking poetic license in JCS basically is, as a few commentators, myself included, point out -- regularly, in my case), has a somewhat flippant tone compared to "Your words, not mine," which says the same thing but more mildly. I don't have a horse in this race, personally; both work for me. You decide what works for you.
Coming Up Next:
There's a surprising amount to say about "Herod's Song," and I'll be the brave bastard to do it!
