Watching Tecklenburg for the first time was the highlight of an absolutely crazy weekend, and now I kinda wanna spend the next week writing headcanons and fanfictions and making gifs and making myself feel better with circus kitties.

To me it really depends on the production

Warsaw feels like it could be happening anywhere from when it was made aka the mid 2000s up to like now. So like the first quarter of 21th century. It's mostly the costumes being more fashion related but still mostly vague enough it could be whatever year

1998 feels like 90s up to like mid 2000s or so. Looking at them I can imagine that Munk has seen a flip phone and M&R stole a few, but definitely neither know what a smartphone is

Brno and Broadway Revival both feel like they're happening around the time they were made up to like 5 years before, just from the vibes and how they look

I know Il Sistina was going for some nebulous futuristic future or smth but looking at it, to me it feels like it's happening perpetually 2 years from now, idk really why

On the other hand, both Gothenburg and the 2019 movie do feel like they're set in some futuristic, maybe somewhat dystopian future. For Gothenburg it's definitely cuz the costumes, but for the movie mostly cuz sets, especially the milk bar

Oasis in general just feels vaguely modern

And last but not least, Tecklenburg feels like it's set in 2012. I have no explanation for this one, I just feel with ever fibre of my body it's 2012 in there

🎶. Who’s your favorite ensemble cat and why?:

I’m fully in love with Jemima, but I don’t really count her as fully ensemble, just because of her multiple solos, and because of that, Pouncival is my favorite ensemble cat :)

He’s just the silliest ever, and I’m 100% obsessed. I love the way he’s hanging with the girls in skimbelshanks (the girls and pouncival™️), and me and my friends had a running joke for a while that was literally just iterations of “the girls, the gays, and pouncival <3”

🎬. What’s your favorite moment from the show?:

Moments of Happiness, 1998, specifically Jemima’s solo. It’s so perfect, ethereal, emotional, and whimsical. I can play it on the piano, and I can sing it :] it also makes me cry

in Macavity drives me so completely insane. The way she growls zerschlagen makes me so jealous, I WISH my voice had that sort of power.

Madrid 2003: Jemima again. Surprise! This time her solo in the middle of Memory, specifically, the way her actress sings the final “endless masquerading” line. It sounds so strong and gorgeous, I could rant about it forever

Vienna 2019: in the 2021 Ronacher album on Spotify, (WHEN I FIGURED OUT THAT ALBUM WAS VIENNA I FREAKED THE FUCK OUT. ITS SO CRAZY), the white cat solo, and Misto’s subsequent section sound really nice, I’m a big fan

💛. What’s your favorite familial ship?:

I’m not entirely sure what this means, but I’m a huge fan of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer as siblings, PLUS Electra as their kid sister. I came up with it once and I think it’s super cute :D

Monochromatic siblings are a must, they’re also very special to me, along with Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks as brother and sister :)

I finally watched Cats Tecklenburg 2015 and I very much loved it! I loved so much of the costuming, though I do wish that some of the new extras also got names, and I really enjoyed the choreography. This was also the first time in a long time I actually wanted to watch Memory. Normally when it comes on I go to a different tab and do something else, but the younger version of Griz dancing while she sings made me look at the screen. It was genius! Also, Tugger, just Tugger. I loved him so much! I love that they played up the annoying younger brother of Munkustrap thing without making me cringe. Something I've found a lot of performers have trouble pulling off. I also cried twice while watching it. Once at the end of the Jellicle Ball. The only other version that gets to me like that is the 98 jellicle ball. And then the ending. I got so emotional over Old Deuteronomy giving Munkustrap the staff I almost started sobbing!

There's a lot more I could say but I'll just say that even though there were parts I wasn't the biggest fan of (It's Growltiger, I always hate Growltiger) I still loved it. And now I am going to watch it a million times to figure out what everyone's circus role is.

Tecklenburg: in which Munk would like a Great Big Stick too, please dad

Here is Deuteronomy. He has a Great Big Regal Stick, with a cat's head on the end.

@storyweaverofgondor and I talked a bit over here about Munk's 'coming of age' as a leader re. him learning to fight Macavity, but his arc also involves leadership skills within the tribe. Both these aspects of leadership - protecting it from external threats, and managing internal order - are represented by Deuteronomy's staff.

Consider "Pekes and Pollicles" - that number is central in Munk's 'coming of age' arc. We see him in Jenny's song gathering everyone to get the party started and setting the tone, then standing aside to let his cats shine; we see him shoved to the side when Tugger takes over; P&P is the first time we see him really take centre stage for himself.

Except he has all the problems of a replica Munkustrap - plus more, because Tugger isn't the only one who keeps interrupting and stealing his lines! And at the end, the sense that Deuteronomy is disappointed in him for the choice of subject matter is stronger than in most replicas: poor boy looks a bit crushed. :(

But what is he wielding during this song, his first major grappling with practical leadership problems during the show?

His own little staff! More of a cane, really. Not as big and majestic as dad's, but he can swoosh it impressively. Plus, if the Authority Of The Staff isn't enough to keep everyone at a respectful distance, at least he can physically restrain Jerrie with it when he and Pounce are trying to rip each other to shreds. Progress, right?

But he must still learn how to Properly Handle Stick.

This is especially true when we consider that Macavity's power is centred in fire (if you haven't seen the production, he's a fire-breather) and Deut's is centred in his staff. When Macavity captures Deuteronomy he does it by snatching his staff and using it to overpower him:

And what weapon does Macavity wield once he's subdued Deuteronomy?

FIERY STAFF. He combines his own power with Deuteronomy’s, and that’s what poor Munk has to overcome.

(It obviously isn't the same prop because it's a fire staff with the fuel pads on either end and no cat's head, but I think we're meant to see it as Deut's staff, given how the cats handle it...)

In the process of defeating Macavity, Munkustrap takes the from him (and the fire goes out, though it's hard to tell at which point in the fight that's meant to happen, since it's hard to control). So he banishes Macavity and his magic - but where is Deuteronomy? Munk cradles the staff when he sings 'we have to find Old Deuteronomy', before holding it up to show the tribe.

He remains temporary custodian of the staff throughout Misto's song, before surrendering it to Misto to use as part of the trick that brings Deut back. Misto then returns it to Deut with a bow, and in the process of getting back up onto the platform at the back of the set, Deut discreetly replaces the fire staff with his own proper staff.

Deuteronomy’s power and majesty is fully restored! But then, finally, after Grizabella climbs up to the Heavyside Layer: Deuteronomy finally bestows it upon Munkustrap. A Great Big Stick of his Very Own.

And Tugger nuzzles his hand. 😌 Munk now has The Respect of the Tugger. He has made it as a leader.
