Twenty-Two 二十二
A few days later, you notice that the background of your iPad has changed to the selfie Donaka took of the two of you at the garden. Your heads are together, his face half obscured in your hair. He is not smiling, per se, but even in the photo you can see that simmering warmth in his eyes that makes you think idiotic thoughts, like maybe he’s not so bad after all, and maybe…he really cares for you.
You can’t help but touch the bite mark on your thigh, the skin now slightly raised but almost smooth under your fingers, the freshly healed mark the color of a candied kiss.
It’s become a tick for you, like touching a talisman.
It doesn’t bother you as much as it should, anymore.
You are reading a book in a lounger on the terrace when Mei pounces on you, grabbing you up in a fierce hug. “Thank you thank you thank you thank you,” she says, a litany of gratitude that ends in a sob and a squeeze that cracks your back.
Though you suddenly dare to hope, you still ask, “For what?”
“Jing had an appointment yesterday with Dr. Thomas Tong. He’s the best children’s oncologist in Hong Kong. Maybe all Asia. He says there’s hope she’ll get better. She starts treatment tomorrow.” Mei bursts into tears of relief, and suddenly you are right there with her. You scoot over on the lounger so she can sit with you, and the two of you hold hands and cry it out for a good five minutes.
“I didn’t do it,” you admit quietly. “Mr. Mark must have arranged everything.”
Mei sniffs and sits back on the lounger, giving you a watery smile like you are being naive. “I know you must have asked.”
“I mentioned it.” Suddenly you feel like a piece of shit, because in fact you hadn’t gotten around to asking again, you’d been so distracted in your absolute besottment…and maybe nervous too, to ask something of him.
For most of your life men have ignored what you say. In one ear and out the other, from your father to handfuls of boyfriends. Yet you say one sentence to that man and he not only remembers, he picks up the context and reads all your footnotes immediately.
Maybe you can’t hide anything from him–but it feels so good, to be heard.
“I am so grateful to both of you.”
“I’ll thank him for you,” you offer, thinking she might be too shy to do it.
Mei nods, wrung out but seemingly happy. The two of you sit together for a while longer, looking out over the fabulous view and thinking similar thoughts about the master of this house. How he seems like a scary man, but like he said to you a few nights before: he takes care of those who he considers his.
You talk quietly, about Jing, and what the doctor said, and then other things. It’s always been easy to talk to Mei, you liked each other from the moment you started working here, but you never really got the chance to sit still together like this because you always had things to do, and your days off never coincided.
It’s possible time slips away from you two, because Mrs. Yeung, the head housekeeper, comes looking for Mei. Afraid that your friend will get into trouble, you address it head on. “I asked Mei to sit with me.”
It’s the first time you've ever tried throwing your weight around with the staff since your change in situation. By the look Mrs. Yeung pays you, crossing her arms, you can tell she doesn't like it. You know she's been judging you since things changed, and you guess you can't really blame her, but none of that is Meis fault.
“Mei has many chores to do today,” says her boss, narrowing her eyes at you, then her. “Not paid to chitchat.”
“I will help her,” you say. “And it will all get done.”
“That's not your job anymore.” She says it snidely with a raised eyebrow, clearly implying that your new job is sucking Donaka Mark’s cock.
Alright. Maybe you can blame her.
Thinking of how Donaka might handle this, you lift your chin and imagine you're seven feet tall, meeting her eyes dead on, not flinching as she tries to stare you down. “I said it will get done. If you have a problem, you can bring it to Mr. Mark. I'm sure he'd love to hear all about it.” Implying quite the opposite, of course, and finally Mrs. Yeung stands down.
“Fine, fine.” With a dismissive wave she stalks off.
“If she makes this a problem for you, tell me,” you say to Mei, who is watching you with a small smile and a mischievous glitter in her eyes.
“Sure thing, tai-tai.”
“Donaka said that to me the other day too.”
Mei’s eyebrows raise high, that glitter in her dark eyes flashing ten-fold. “He did?”
“He told me to ask you what it means?”
She giggles a little, and for some reason that makes you nervous. “Now it’s slang for a spoiled rich housewife. But in the old days, when Chinese men took more than one wife, the first wife was the tai-tai, the Supreme-Supreme. She was the boss.” Mei gives you a meaningful look that for some reason makes your cheeks burn.
“I don’t think I’m the boss of anything,” you say with a snort. “He was just teasing me because I didn’t want to go home yet.”
“Hmm. If you say so.”
“Oh god. Come on, let’s go get the living room clean. I’ll do the vases.” You know they scare her, after she nearly bumped one of them onto the hard floor. She sighs with relief, and the two of you go back into the house. But then you think maybe you shouldn’t be handling the priceless antiques, because a fine tremor has started in your hands, and you can’t get it to stop.
***
Donaka does not come home until late late that evening. You catch up with him in his office, frowning at his laptop screen. When you knock quietly he closes the device, rubbing his eyes. He looks exhausted, and your heart squeezes in your chest. “Is everything alright?”
“Just work. You would not believe how careless some of the children of my rich clients can be.”
“Oh?”
Though he seems on edge, you dare take this as an invitation to walk deeper into the room. He’s never really offered you details of what he does, and you find you’re curious.
“I have spent the better part of my day explaining to this young man that the girl in distress he’s been sending thousands of dollars to is not, in fact, Kate Moss, but probably a teenage boy with a fast internet connection in Jakarta. I had to provide a detailed digital trail, and I still don’t think he believes us. And I couldn’t call him a fucking idiot to his face, because his father is a billionaire tycoon who I would very much like to keep on side.”
You cover your mouth to damper a guffaw. “Oh dear. Damn millennials.”
“Aren’t you a millennial?”
You shrug with a little smile. He makes a harsh sound through his teeth, but you can tell he's leaning towards amused.
You feel it, when this man’s gaze sharpens upon you, raking up and down your figure. It’s late; you are in a nightie and a silk robe printed with flowers and little birds. “You look good enough to eat. Come here.” He doesn’t frame it as a request.
Maybe you are getting too used to that. You go without a thought, folding yourself into his lap. “So…is that what your company does?” you ask. “Track down digital predators?”
“We handle digital and physical security for our clients,” he answers, winding a tendril of your hair around his finger, pulling you into a kiss.
“Huh.”
He smiles against your mouth. “You’d really convinced yourself it was something far more nefarious, hadn’t you?”
You shrug, your robe slipping down your shoulder. “From the evidence placed in front of me…”
He chuckles darkly, helping your robe along on its way with a slow caress from the backs of his fingers. You shudder, closing your eyes, your nipples pebbling almost painfully in response to his touch. With his eyes fixed like lasers on your chest he says, “Don’t worry, bunny. I can still be a bad man for you.”
“I was just thinking…how much I like it…when you’re good,” you admit breathily, his long fingers sliding into your hair.
“Whatever do you mean?” he fishes with a smirk.
“For what you did…for Mei. Thank you.”
You don't think you imagine it, when he seems to soften, a nearly microscopic bit.
“I did it for you.”
You tilt your head, studying him. “Not for a four year old girl who needs serious help?”
“There are a lot of children in the world who need help, y/n. A man could go broke and mad before he saved them all.”
“I know. But doesn’t it feel good to have done this one good deed?” You study him, genuinely curious.
“It feels good to make you happy,” he answers, and you believe he’s being honest with you, rather than trotting out the right answer for decorum’s sake. “I told you I’d find the thing you like to spend money on. Turns out it’s not clothes or handbags. I think I like that about you, bunny.”
Your heart thumps in your chest. You feel like you’ve walked into one of his traps, somehow.
“But…what about taking care of those who are yours?”
He lifts an eyebrow at you. “Is little Jing mine?”
“Mei is your loyal employee?”
“Of course. But Mei’s not the one who’s sick. Do you know how many relatives she has?”
You get the feeling he’s trying to tell you something. Perhaps that you’re not changing him, that he’s not a good man, deep down, and he’s not going to pretend to be one. But you might act as something of a moral compass–so long as you do not displease him.
Or maybe he would have done it anyway, but he saw the opportunity to sink his claws even deeper into you.
Fine. If that’s the way he wants to play it…you’re game. If this is the price for a fighting chance for Jing…you’ll keep doing your part, gladly.
“What are you thinking, bunny? Have I disappointed you?” He twists your hair around his fist, not hurting you, but holding you fast.
“No,” you answer breathily. “I don’t care why you did it. I’m still grateful.”
One of his eyebrows quirks at this, but you can tell he’s pleased. “How grateful?”
Slowly you slide from his lap, going to your knees between his long legs. You’re gratified when he looks down at you with those fathomless black eyes, a heat in them that could burn down the world.
“Very,” you say coyly, looking up at him from beneath your lashes as you graze the taut muscles of his thighs with your nails. He says nothing else, just watches you with parted lips as you unbuckle his belt and free his erect manhood into your hand.
You suppose Mrs. Yeung was right about you, you muse, before you take him into your mouth, swirling your tongue over his sensitive head before burying him in the back of your throat. He is not mean about it, as he has been in the past, his fingers tangled in your hair as you work him with your lips and tongue. When you gag on his length it's your own doing, though the moan it wins you is its own reward. Though he’s barely touched you, you are still soaking wet between your legs, your treacherous cunt loving the thrill of being in this man’s clutches, of belonging to him.
You absolutely need your head checked, but that echoes in your mind as you take him inside you, and swallow him down. His. Body and soul, you’re his.
Afterwards you rest with your cheek on his thigh, practically purring as he strokes your hair lightly, sated for now. “Would you like a hospital wing next time?” he teases you, winning a shaky laugh.
“Put it on my Christmas list, I guess.”
“I think I’ll take you to work with me,” he muses. “You can sit under my desk when I have to reason with entitled morons.”
Imagining this makes you laugh out loud. At least…you hope he is joking.
“I’d like to see where you work,” you say. “It sounds exciting.”
He huffs with amusement. “It’s not. Ninety-nine percent of security work is watching, and waiting, and being ready in the off chance something happens.”
“Well. You must be the best there is.”
“Are you buttering me up?” he asks with that half smile that makes your belly flutter.
“Me?” You push to your feet slowly, holding out your hands to him.
“What?” he asks, though he takes them, allowing you to pull him out of his chair.
“We’re going to take a warm bath.”
“Ohhh. The mistress has spoken.”
You bite down on the urge to make a tai-tai comment again. That is something you should bury six feet down.
“You've had a long day. It will feel good.” You look him up and down in his slightly rumpled work clothes, biting your lip. “And I’m not done with you yet.”
A low growl is your only warning, before he pounces on you, capturing your mouth and sweeping you up into his arms. You scream and giggle, your heart full as he silences you with his lips on yours.
Maybe you've been trying not to fall in love with this man– but he's really been fucking that up for you lately.

Infraperegrination of the Utter Islands
Want to make or run something in Hingsajagra? Check this out.
First order of business, the state of affairs for Hingsajagra.
The year 11664 is largely parallel to our world's 20th Century, but without the huge advancements into machinery (while industry being important). More importantly, the world is an industrialistic world but industry is forwarded by magick and war. Industrialized magick. The end of the world that follows after World War I vibes.
The world is mostly split into five eras, as reckoned by Shennin scholarship. The modern year is 11,664 of the Lotus Calendar. This puts it at the 243rd Cycle of History.
1 - Burgeoning Era (1000s to 7000s.) The Agricultural Revolution. The time of Chiefdoms, Warbands, roving eras, Naka Kingdoms, Yakka Kingdoms, Siyukuy Kingdoms, etc. This era ended during The Ultimate Cleave. The great apocalypse that split the Great Southern Continent from the Dakmalan Continent and turned it into a fractured archipelago.
2 - The Ancient Era (8000s-9000s). The time of Ancient Shen, Ancient Metoma, and Ancient Razru cultures. Widely accepted that the end of this era was during the Black Meteor Cataclysm, an ancient Metoman prophecy that came true. A meteor slammed into the earth and shattered the Utter Islands even more, into its modern geography.
3 - The Classical Era (9000s-10,000s). A time of great upheaval, but also the rise of classical cultures. The influential Old Razru Empires, the Asitowan Principalities, the Lotus States (filled with the Jing, Rak, Sanun, Si, and Yun ethnic groups, which would eventually coalesce under the Meteorite Emperor to become the Shen people), Utrang kingdoms, the Yagan Kingdom, the Meshiri Kingdom, the Yeung Kingdom, the Natara Kingdom, the Kamitan Communes, the Dakai Tribes, the first few Raga tribes, the Tawun Chiefdoms, and more. It is widely accepted that this time only ended after the victory of Shen and the World Collective against the Devil King Roghan.
4 - The Rebirth Era (10,000s to 11000). The Industrial Revolution. The Smith-Kings and the Merchant Princes created textile factories, weapon factories, and machine tools. Most significant was the invention of the Karma Engine. Surplus yields across all industries, creating industry, as well as machineway of engineering and architecture. This era is said to have ended with the first Uprisings against Kings, spearheaded by humanitarian sages that arose during the time of increasing industry.
5 - The Modern Era (11000s to 11500s). The Bourgeois Revolution. The merchant princes and machine-capitalists seized the means of production and operated from there, hiring and putting laborers to work them. The power of these engines and the strength of free market trade caused even gods (see: Hri Vaizzan the God of Merchantry), spirits, and monsters (yakshas, anjuras, uki, etc.) to be subsumed into the labor force. It is widely believed that this era ended with the overthrow of the monarchies that ruled for 2500 years, represented the most with the First Apocalypse with the consummation of the Heavenly Shennin Kingdom spearheaded by the Invincible Blade Princess the Empress of the Universe. On the Fire Dog Year 11512 Kafeng Masagwa and the Knights of the World set to motion the First World Revolution that shattered all bourgeois and aristocrat rule. It was not to last.
6 - The Revolutionary Era (11500s to 11607s). The Hundred Revolutions Era. With the power of factories, the proletariat of the world fought to consolidate power, but with Kafeng Masagwa's death and growing distrust in the Knights, the world alliance shattered into nation-states. The nation states fought separately for national liberation, explosive uprisings filled the 100 Year Revolution. This caused unprecedented global bloodshed and violence. Wars that ended all wars. Separated into nations, they were easily cowed and beaten into "Peace" through the concerted efforts of the International Bourgeoisie, headed by the Universal Capitalists and the Trillionaires of the Trichiliocosm, which would quickly vanish as they appealed to the people. In the guise of a successful revolution, the revolutionary efforts were cowed. This era ended with the rising of the efforts of the Second World Knights Coalition who tried and failed to bind the people together in the face of unprecedented genocide. This was the Second World Revolution, which failed.
7 - The End Of The World (11608 to modern day). The End of the World. The bloodshed of the revolutionary era ended the world. The international bourgeoisie, headed now by the Central Yavinian Guild of the Ressen-Nalenji Empire, penetrates the world and seeks to join it together under the guise of "After The End" where the world must rise. The revolutionaries have been defeated and stamped down, the majority of the people, tired of war, do not want any more revolutions. Communism and Revolution is seen with contempt, as "mountaineers" and "foresters." As banditry and piracy. As detrimental to human progress. Will you prove them wrong? Or finish the job? You know it deep in your heart that there's only one way for the new world to be born.
The Karma Engine
The most important invention of the Revolutionary Era. It resembles a giant spirit house but with the offering platform replaced with a closed in sacrificial furnace. There, little gods, weaponsouls, ghosts, sacrificial people, and mantra-mandalas are burned upon samadhi fires. Karma Engines are therefore a joint machinist-monk invention (and indeed, the patenter of the technology is widely agreed to have been Vajra Monk Rakan Jesung, who grew up in a working-class machinist family).
In doing their karma is converted into usable energy, often electrical energy or mechanical energy. The study of karma is known as Karmalogy in the world. In Karmalogy, karma is seen as the potential energy of existence and being itself, and many Karmologists posit that the entire current world of Hingsajagra exists because of the Karma of the past world. When sentient beings are sacrificed to the Karma Engine, this is seen as a painful but purificatory ritual, and is deemed ethical by many world faiths as the being that dies from the Karma Engine's samadhi fires is almost always reborn as a human due to the neutralizing of their karma. Many who have surplus good karma do not go through this, and so the majority of criminals and harmful animals are given to the Karma Engine.
Infrakarmalogists, however, put forth that there are abundant amounts of ambient karma that arises from the world itself, surplus karma that emanates from the deeds of the past world, and this can be used to power karma engines without voluntary suicide.
Magnetitologists have been creating Magnetite Engines, which seek to replace Karma Engines. Magnetite is widely believed to be the infrasubstance, the aggregates of atoms. A level above the smallest quantum, where the material dissolves from perception. Magnetite arises from places of intense emotion and thoughts, and so it can be mined from worship, war, joy, and other such sites of powerful explosive emotion. Currently magnetite is being used in socialist Hokou and in Selorong. The bourgeoisie that own Karma Engines (many of them non-religious themselves) have become ardent anti-magnetitians, and have begun slander campaigns against them.
Important Bans
No default fantasy. The major cultural power of this world is China, Thailand, and Indonesia. Use their medieval aesthetics to fluence and inform your End of the World depictions.
No "races." Elves, dwarves, etc. aren't demihuman races, they're completely different magickal beings and spirits. Lean on the folklore.
No automatic rifles. The extent of guns is matchlocks. The chemistry of the world does not allow for automatic weapons. Armamental Technology therefore is focused on blade-and-bow-technologies. Sappers are important industrialists. There are Sword Factories, Bow Factories. Cannons exist but these are few and far between.
No automatic vehicles. Keep the cavalry, the chariot, the dragonriders and the phoenix knights. But no cars. Keep the carriages and the boats.
No tanks. Tanks are replaced by magick mechs called Yakshamachines.
No Latin. If you want to look for a lingua franca that performs the duty of Latin, use either Sanskrit, Old Chinese, or Old Javanese. In the World, they're Ancient Razrunan languages or Ancient Rakeen languages [Rak is where the Meteorite Emperor arose from and he turned it into the Court Language for the First Dynasty]) Yes, you can in fact translate Latin phrases into one of those languages. Such as Shantim Krute, Yuddhaya Sajjah for If you want peace, para bellum. Or bajingan perang for casus belli. Ignore this for prefixes and suffixes (e.g., -istry, -ology, -onomy). Keep it for proper nouns that must come from an in-world language.
Everything else we can justify into a 20th century analog. A kind of perfect ideal is Late Medieval Warfare.
Features
Non-exhaustible list.
Buildings. Large rectangular buildings are a feature of only one world place. Tall multiple-roofed places are still built with either wood or skystone (a stone of colder make) that creates a facsimile of our world.
Expressways. Don't exist. The world is connected together by railways and riverways. Riverboats are cheaper to make and use than karmaboats.
Industry. Industry hinges on the karma engine rather than the steam engine.
High-rises. High-rises are crafted by ancient building-wizards. The majority of high-rises in the world are giant yaksha statues hollowed out and repurposed.
Automata exist but are rare. It requires decades of study for a wizard to reach automata level construction. Automaton wizards are known as automatists.
Industry. Almost everyone has swords, but these swords come not from the artisan but from the worker working the weapon-machines. Wagons and horse bridles, tiger-bridles, clothing... all the mass-produced clothing arise from a Manufactory. The machines here are often created by either wizards, machinists, or gods and made to be owned by capitalists and merchants.
Inspirations and Approximations
Each major region is inspired by the following regions, though they're not exactly those regions. It would be impossible to fully map any of the regions accurately to a real world culture because of the difference in material conditions, but you can use the following for aesthetic, cultural, and religious inspirations.
Temog Ra-Om, the Charnel Isles, Pemi, and the Heavenshards are inspired by Maritime Asian cultures, Southeast Asian cultures, and Pacific cultures. This includes coastal Vietnam and Thailand.
Hiraga Ra-Om's southern coast inspired by inland Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Further up north it is inspired by China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Tibet, and other Central Asian cultures.
Jagged Swordfields people are inspired by Russo-Siberian people.
North Wadzara is inspired by Japan and West Coast America.
South and Eastern Wadzara is inspired by mixing Arabia and Central America.
Southern Nilatpa is inspired by the Indianic cultures.
Western Nilatpa is inspired by Spain, Germany, and France.
Central and Northern Nilatpa is inspired by Italy, England, and Danish cultures.

Summary:
American Born Chinese tells the story of teenager Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), a son of Chinese immigrants, who for the most part is a typical high school kid. He collects manga, tries to join the soccer team, and is on a journey dealing with his own identity as he tries to figure out who he is. One day, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), an exchange student, arrives at Jin's school. Unlike Jin, Wei-Chen didn't grow up in America, is loud and open by nature, and doesn't exhibit Jin's self-doubt and insecurities. At times, this causes Jin to feel embarrassed being associated with Wei-Chen.
Wei-Chen is revealed to be the son of Sun Wukong (portrayed by Daniel Wu), commonly known as the Monkey King, a legendary figure in Chinese literature. Wei-Chen had a dream that the mythical Fourth Scroll can stop an uprising against Heaven. The dream also told him that an ordinary teenager is destined to aid him in his search. So Wei-Chen stole his father's magical staff and is now, disguised as a high schooler, searching for the scroll in earthly California, convinced that Jin is the ordinary teenager from his prophetic dream.

Ip Man’s peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family’s honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San. Set amidst the turbulent times in China that saw the end of the rule of Manchu dynasty, the embryonic republic established and then the Japanese invasion, we meet a man (Tony Leung) who lives peacefully in the small town of Foshan until he meets Wing Chun grand master Gong Yutian (Qingxiang Wang) who is looking for a successor. That is the beginning of a journey that will see him become a grand master of the martial art himself, whilst meeting, marrying and surviving! It’s a superb looking film but for me just a little too over-stylised. The combat scenes are creatively choreographed but the use of the slowed-down visual effects didn’t always work. Leung and the director are clearly on the same wavelength, and the story itself is a fascinating look at the rise of one culture through the wreckage of an ancient one. It’s also clear that women too had their place in this society – and it wasn’t always where stereotype might assume. A strong contribution from the adept and nimble Ziyi Zhang (Gong Er) demonstrates that well as battle lines between the old and new, the powerful and the aspirational are drawn and a good old dose of ancient tribal warfare sets up a proud story of heritage, loyalty and skill. Though a little soporifically scored at times, this is an enjoyable mix of history with touch of romance and plenty of action, and is well worth a couple of hours.

五郎八卦棍 (The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, 1984)

Ambitious in scope and design and featuring#Some incredible choreography‚ not just in the fight scenes but in every scene of people interacting with one another#Original star Alexander Fu was killed in a car accident during production‚ and the film hastily reworked to move the emphasis from his#Character onto Gordon Liu; honestly‚ they did it so well that I'm not sure I would have noticed the rewrites and shuffling around of#Characters if I hadn't read about it before watching. Some incredible setpiece fights and characters that you actually care about..#This is good hong Kong cinema. Kara Wai comes from nowhere to steal the film right out from under her male costars#Opening battle scene is fascinating in its artifice‚ being so clearly performed on stages and sets that seem to have been designed to be#Almost expressionistic rather than realist. Feels like the capturing of a legendary historical event on camera#Good stuff this. But be warned‚ the ending features perhaps the most dental trauma I've ever seen in one film

Sakura let out a sigh. Her face scrunching up before it relaxed. She rested her chin on her forearm as the masseuse kneaded the knots out of her shoulders and neck.
Tobirama sat in the corner of the room. Every once in a while, his eyes lifted toward her. The blue light of the laptop bathed his throat and face. It made his dark circles darker, his cheekbones sharper.
Sakura turned her head to the side to look at him. It took him a while. But when he felt her stare, he lifted his chin again. She winked at him. He smiled a little.
“Thankful?” he guessed.
“Let me buy this place from you,” she said instead.
“Hell no,” Tobirama snorted.
"I thought so. Well, I tried,” sighed Sakura, eyes drifting shut.
The candles burning around the room filled it with the scent of lavender. By the time the massage was done, Sakura had nearly fallen asleep. But not quite. Because she could hear the sharp tap of Tobirama’s fingers over the keyboard. The creak of the masseuse’s feet on the floorboards.
At the end of the hour, Sakura sat up. Rolling her shoulders a few times to test them. She twisted from side to side. And then she got to her feet to dress. Tobirama shut his laptop, rested his cheek on his fist. He waited until the masseuse gathered up the used towels and bowed before leaving the room. Only then did he speak again.
“I’m assuming you didn’t just come here for a massage,” he said.
Sakura glanced over her shoulder at him as she clasped her bra. And then she turned to face him as she pulled her blouse on.
“I actually did,” she replied. She took her time with each button, starting from the bottom. When she looked up, Tobirama’s eyes were narrowed. She smiled.
“And, I wanted to let you know that Uncle gave me the okay to kill Fai Tsai,” Sakura then added.
Tobirama let out a sigh. Arms tapping against the armrest. He scratched his thumbnail against the tattoo on his chin.
Sakura stepped into her black heels. The bright red bottoms touching against the floor. She took slow steps toward him. Her shadow fell across him as she leaned forward, hand resting on his shoulder.
“So cough him up, brother,” she whispered.
Tobirama stared up at her. He let out a sigh. His expression made her pause. She slid into his lap, her hands settling against his cheeks. The faint stubble scratching against her palms.
“This won’t be good for any of us, you know,” he warned her.
When their eyes met, Sakura smiled. And it wasn’t filled with any sarcasm or cruelty. Tobirama placed his hand on the back of her head. Twisting into her hair. She let him kiss her.
“I know.”
Sakura remembered the night Sifu Might died. The rain bouncing off the asphalt like millions of little marbles. The stink of tobacco clinging to her fingertips and her jacket as she climbed the stairs to the second floor. She caught herself in the doorway before she stepped into the training hall. Sifu always nagged her about how bad smoking was for her. She had stopped trying to explain that it really wasn’t her. That Orochimaru just insisted on her holding onto his cigarette whenever he needed to free up his hands.
Sakura pushed the door open with her shoulder, squinting against the light. She stood in the entrance, wiping her face dry with her sleeve.
“Hey! I’ve been calling you! Thought you weren’t coming tonight!” Rock called out to her from across the room. He grunted as he caught the punching bag that swung into him. And then flashed a grin at her.
“Sorry. My phone’s broken,” she replied. It had fallen into an industrial meat grinder along with the corpse she had been disposing of the night before.
Rock said something to one of the men standing against the wall. They traded places so that Rock could stop holding the punching bag. He jogged over, as light on his feet as ever. There was always a bounce in his step, a smile on his face.
“If Sifu around?” asked Sakura. She glanced around. Couldn’t see his ripped sleeves or hear his booming voice. Rock shook his head.
“No. Maybe he slipped out to the convenience store or something?” Rock wondered. Sakura nodded. She began shrugging off her coat when something strange blurred past the window. She heard an odd noise from outside. Something louder than the rain that didn’t belong there.
She and Rock walked to the window. She pushed it open to peek out into the rain. Rock leaned out over her to look too. Together they looked around before they examined the streets below. And by the yellow light of the streetlights, they could see a shape sprawled on the concrete. The bright green shirt and matching pants blaring like a traffic light.
“Holy shit!” Rock exclaimed.
People stopped in the middle of their sparring and training. They ran over, also sticking their heads outside.
“Is that Sifu?!”
“Someone call an ambulance!”
“That’s blood!”
“Someone call!”
“Where did he come from?”
Sakura was frozen in place. She stared at the way both Guy’s legs splayed in the wrong direction. His head twisted around, neck broken as he hit the ground.
A sick feeling bubbled up in her gut.
She shoved past Rock and the others, back inside. Ignoring the way Rock called her name. Running as fast as she could towards the stairs that led up to the roof.
The door to the roof flew open. It smashed against the wall. Slamming shut behind her.
There was only one person standing up on the roof. And Sakura didn’t know who she had expected, but it certainly hadn’t been Kabuto. He stood close to the edge, wringing his hands as he stared down at the body.
At the loud noise, he started and turned toward her. His eyes darted toward the door behind her. And he began taking slow steps to the side, slowly curving his way toward the door. His hands held up in front of him.
“...Lan yeung... it was you?” she spat.
“Okay, listen to me, Jing-Mei. This isn’t what is looks like,” he said.
The very sound of his voice made her tremble with rage.
“I’m going to tear you apart,” she snarled. And he could barely hear her over the rain. He tripped over a pipe on his way to the door. He fell hard onto his side. Elbow banging against the floor. He pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose in time to see Sakura stalking over to him.
Kabuto scrambled away on his hands and feet.
“Jing-Mei! I swear! It was an accident!” he sputtered.
She advanced, splashing through the puddles that had gathered on the rooftop.
“We were arguing and I got angry! I didn’t mean to push him that hard! I just-”
“Diu lei lo mo!” she cursed.
Sakura lunged. Her fist connected with his jaw. And as he reeled from the impact, she grabbed the collar of his jacket. She began hammering her fist into his face over and over again. Pain erupted across her knuckles as her skin split. Her blood mingling with his. Shards of glass digging into her skin as his glasses shattered.
She screamed as she continued to pummel him. Tears spilling down her cheeks as she hit him over and over. Until her arms ached, until she could barely see past her own tears. And she could hear Kabuto sobbing for mercy over and over again.
“Jing-Mei! Please!” he hiccuped. One of his eyes squinted shut against the blood streaming from his forehead. It looked like she had broken his nose from the way both his nostrils gushed blood too. He keened in pain, one of his hands reaching for her shirt.
Fists still dripping blood, Sakura released Kabuto’s jacket. His head smacked against the rooftop. Eyes unfocused. He coughed, wheezing as tried to crawl away from her. And she let him wriggle out from under her. Her arms hung at her sides as she watched him. The pain spreading through her shredded knuckles.
She got to her feet, exhausted. Kabuto lay curled up on his side in the rain. Sobbing to himself, both his hands clutched over his head. The rage welled up hot in her again. She kicked him hard in the side. Relishing the scream of pain that erupted from his mouth before he dissolved back into sobs. She said nothing else to Kabuto as she headed down the stairwell.
Back into the training hall. Some of the students stood inside, huddled close and speaking in low voices. Occasionally, one of them peeked out the window. Like they expected Guy to suddenly stand up and walk back inside, waving both his hands.
Lee started when he saw her dripping water and blood all over the polished floors. He cradled his phone against his shoulder as he ran to meet her.
“Jing-Mei, what-”
“I need your keys,” she interrupted him. Her voice came out a little harsher than she had intended. Some heads swiveled toward her. But they quickly looked away. Even though no one ever brought it up, everyone knew who she was. Knew the rumors of who she worked for. Knew better than to stare.
Rock searched her face.
“He wouldn’t want you to do this,” Rock warned her, his voice low. But as he spoke, he fished into his pocket and pulled out his keys. Sakura snatched them out of the air when he tossed them over.
“I don’t care,” she snapped before she headed out into the rain. Trying not to see Guy’s body sprawled out on the pavement. His blood seeping into the sewers. Arms and legs bent at all the wrong angles. His eyes as blank as soulless as those of a fish.
She drove Rock’s car to where she knew Orochimaru would be. A seedy little nightclub tucked away in Central. Down a winding alley, tucked underneath a strip joint. The smoke and blinking lights made her head throb as she slipped into the club. She weaved through the dancers who gyrated to the beat.
And in the very back, past the VIP section, into the office.
Sakura burst in without knocking. Rainwater dripping down her face. Blood still smearing across her upper lip and staining the collar of her shirt. Panting against the exhaustion and pain that had started to seep into her nerves.
Orochimaru was in the middle of a meeting. His jacket draped over the back of his chair. Dressed in his tailored white shirt and suspenders. All heads turned to her as she doors banged open. Some drew guns on reflex. But when they recognized her, they lowered their firearms. A couple called her name, asked what was wrong. One even rose and took a few steps toward her. It was Dirty Sam. Too many buttons of his shirt opened to show off the tattoo of a snake coiled around a heart in the middle of his chest.
But Sakura ignored them all. Knocked Sam’s hand aside as she crossed the room. Orochimaru was sitting on the edge of his desk, arms folded across his chest. And when she crossed the room, her hands reaching, he opened up his arms. Let her grasp his forearms as a soundless sob rose up her throat.
Orochimaru measured her expression. He then eyed the men over her shoulder. He didn’t need to say anything else when he jerked his chin. They got to their feet and made a swift exit.
Sakura felt something inside her clench up as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Orochimaru,” she whispered. Without honorifics. Without any of the titles.
He didn’t chastise her.
“Sifu Might is dead.”
“...Oh,” Orochimaru replied. And then he slipped out of her grasp. He examined her hands. At where the skin had scraped away from where her knuckles had met Kabuto’s face again and again. His hands were warm as he took her face.
And then she added: “It was Fai Tsai. He killed him.”
“On purpose?” asked Orochimaru.
Sakura’s eyes hardened. “It doesn’t matter.”
Orochimaru smirked at that. And then he clicked his tongue when he saw that she had broken several of her nails.
“He pushed him off the roof. I mean... what the fuck?” she croaked.
“Did the police get him?” Orochimaru questioned, ever the pragmatist. She had always hated that cold logic in his tone. But not tonight.
Sakura shook her head. “I don’t know."
Orochimaru sighed, looking up toward the ceiling. “Kabuto’s singular talent is crawling into hiding like a little rat. He’ll be gone by the time cops get there,” he remarked. And then his gaze fell back onto Sakura. At the way her shoulders were shaking.
Tears welled up in her eyes. Dripping down her cheeks where they melted into the rainwater.
“I hate him. I want to kill him,” she whispered.
“Hate him or not, he’s still a Red Pole, Jing-Mei. Or have you forgotten?” Orochimaru reminded her, holding her hands between his. She yanked her hands free, clenching them into fists at her sides.
“I don’t care! I hate him!” Sakura insisted. And then she heard how childish she sounded and fell quiet again. Her forehead fell against his collarbone as he pulled her close. Orochimaru didn’t seem to mind that she was wetting his clothes. Or that her diluted blood dripped all over his pants. Staining the white fabric pink in strange patches as she gripped his shirt.
“You’re very upset right now. It’s best not to make any rash decisions,” Orochimaru warned her as he began stroking her hair. The collar of his shirt smelled a little like incense.
“So you’re taking Fai Tsai’s side,” Sakura stated. Her voice suddenly flat and quite composed.
His hand paused.
“I never said that,” he corrected her.
Sakura drew back a little at that. Her eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“I can’t stand to see my cute subordinate so upset,” he told her. He reached up to wipe her eyes with his thumbs. And then he stared directly at her. A smile curling at his mouth.
“So what do you want to do?” Orochimaru inquired. Like he was asking her what she wanted to eat for dinner. He took her hands in his again. Golden eyes searching her face.
And like so much of what Orochimaru said and did, this was confusing. She had the sense that this wasn’t a normal conversation. That he really was asking what she wanted. So she frowned when she met his gaze again.
“But you like Kabuto. You support him,” Sakura slowly said. Orochimaru nodded.
“I think he’s funny. So, yes, I do. But I’m going to tell you a secret about this world, Jing-Mei.”
And Orochimaru leaned in closer. His smile was terrifying. It turned her blood to ice. But she couldn’t stop herself from leaning in closer. Until her forehead almost touched his.
“There is no neutrality in this world. By not taking action, that is your action. If you want to survive in this life- our life- you need to always choose a side,” Orochimaru whispered.
Sakura felt her lower lip tremble. She bit down on it, nodding. And then Orochimaru’s thumbs stroked over the backs of her hands.
“And right now, I’m choosing you,” Orochimaru added. She averted her gaze. Nodding as the tears burned hot in the corners of her eyes. Threatening to spill over one more time.
“So what do you want to do?” he asked her again.
“I want him to die like the little shit-eating rat he is. But first I want him to suffer,” Sakura whispered.
Orochimaru beamed. He kissed her forehead.
“Wonderful. Don’t let go of that feeling.”
Sakura found Kabuto hiding out on an old oil tanker sitting in Kowloon Bay. The guard at the door let her pass without a word. Inside was a makeshift gambling den. Folding tables set up around the room. Chairs clustered around them.
Red-rimmed eyes darted to her when the door opened and shut.
She stood out like a sore thumb among the men who stank of tobacco and whiskey in her cobalt jumpsuit. The neckline plunged in a thin strip down to her belt, revealing just a sliver of her chest and stomach. Her wine-colored lips smiled when she found Kabuto hunkered down in a corner, cards fanned out in his hand. Smoke twisted out of her mouth as she exhaled.
Sakura said nothing. But she nodded toward Kabuto. Sai and Tenten stepped out from behind her. They advanced on Kabuto. Tenten shoved the chips and cards off the table. The plastic pieces plinking against ground. Sai placed his hand on the back of Kabuto’s chair.
The room fell silent.
The tap of Sakura’s heels rang out. As she took one step. Then the next. The swish of her flowing sleeves whispering from her sides.
And then Sakura stopped just in front of Kabuto. She tucked her thumbs into her pockets. Tilted her head to one side.
“It’s been a while, brother,” she greeted him.
Kabuto didn’t try to run. His face was haggard. Eyes completely bloodshot. The band of his gold watch slid around his bony wrist.
“...Why are you doing this, Jing-Mei?” Kabuto asked. He didn’t sound angry or even desperate. And when he looked up, he looked her right in the eyes. She plucked the cigarette out of her mouth. Let it rest between her fingers. She watched his expression shift. And maybe he realized before she even opened her mouth to respond.
“You know why, Kabuto.”
