A change of perception between ARMY and Jikook?

There was a clip during ITS yesterday between Jimin and Jungkook which caused quite a large reaction. The clip in question was Jungkook asking Jimin “Do you want some ramen?” It’s a known saying in Korea, which is the equivalent of “Netflix and chill.” This clip plus the way both Jimin and Jungkook reacted to it, caused many to raise eyebrows. However, for jikookers, this is not the first time this reference has been made. Keep reading to see what I mean!

During BTS’ vacation in 2019, Jungkook was posting late on Weverse. He posted “if by chance there are any ARMYs eating ramen because of me...please eat deliciously for me.” Later on, Jimin responded with “thanks to you, I am also eating ramen deliciously.” Just like yesterday, K-Army quickly linked the reference (often used in k-dramas) and jikook’s posts. Especially with the timing of them.

However, unlike yesterday, there was a massive outrage by other ARMYs about this being talked about. How dare we suggest that Jimin and Jungkook might be making such a reference? Jimin and Jungkook aren’t together. Stop being delulu. I was requested to make Live Reactions to this moment last year and I had to cancel it because the hate was so bad. Aimed towards Jimin, Jungkook, and the LGBT community. Something which is sometimes forgotten about amongst all this hate. The way this fandom disrespects those who are actually from the community, by using jikook as an excuse to do so.

If we then think back to yesterday, the reaction was very different. Yes, there was still some arguing about it. However, there was an overall response of people joining in with jikookers on social media. In my opinion, there is something else that added to the difference in reactions over the last two years. That is because of a shift in the way people perceive jikook, due to the amount of content we have seen with them both lately. Especially over the last few months, there is an obvious intimate nature between them. To jikookers, this is nothing new. To others that may have tried to ignore it in the past, they cannot avoid what is always in front of them. I have seen this change myself.

I have been doing Live Reactions to jikook moments for over a year now. My very first one was to GCFT. Though I wanted to give full honest reactions, I made the decision very quickly to NOT include hateful comments. I only wanted to focus on the positive and there are plenty of beautiful comments about GCFT that outweigh the hate. Some instantly remembered the old radio segment where Jimin said he wanted to go on a trip with Jungkook. The fact this happened many years later and sounded like it wouldn’t be their first made people very soft. The choice of Jungkook’s editing and music choice, which is perfect for jikook, added to the vibes of this.

After my first Live Reactions thread, I started looking into reactions to older and newer moments. I even found a jikook forum from 2015, which gave insight into how Jikook shippers felt at the time. The most notable moment that caused a massive shockwave was when jikook were slow dancing together during KBS 151230. Especially when it seemed to be backstage and a very private moment between the two of them. As time passed, the members of this forum even started to question what the term “shipping” meant. If calling jikook a ship was a correct term to use or not. It seemed somewhat disrespectful to call their unit “a ship”, as they watched jikook grow with their moments together.

Over the years, we always see jikook together in their own worlds. This includes DVD content, interviews, or fan cams in concerts. However, only certain social media accounts would post these moments, and fan cams were sparse. There was even a time when a fansite got attacked for posting a concert photo of jikook together and they ended up deleting it. Whilst jikookers were debating how to describe jikook, some of the fandoms had already labeled jikook purely as “fanservice” and just seeing Jimin and Jungkook together caused upset. That in itself is very telling, they don’t want to go against what they have already made their minds up to.

During these “fanservice moments”, people made up excuses for the way jikook acted. For example, when Jimin sat on Jungkook’s lap (181020) or Jungkook made Jimin a bigger pancake (Run episode 71). ARMY dissected these moments and tried to put their own spin on it, rather than just accepting it as what it was. That Jimin and Jungkook care about each other and have a great connection on stage. I started to see these types of excuses being made in 2018. After the release of GCFT, it was like jikook was being watched. Was there a difference with jikook? What did it mean? They were being watched, but for the wrong reasons.

Whilst there was an increase of these excuses, there was also an increase of content and jikook within them. The most notably being Memories 2018. There have always been jikook moments in previous Memories DVD’s. As a whole, there aren't a lot of jikook moments in the DVD, but it’s the type of moments that are within Memories that is important. We see them backstage a lot, practicing with each other or giving each other comfort. Their giggles and smiles. Going off to do their own things, they have their own vibes that some like to ignore. With this increase of moments, ARMY may have wanted to turn a blind eye. However, the general public could not.

The Rose Bowl moment with jikook is famous. No doubt about it. When I did a 'Live Reactions’ to it, I was shocked by the amount of people talking about it. ARMY was trying to ignore it and come up with excuses or posting hate under posts about it. Meanwhile, others were talking about it openly. Including other K-pop stans, who are used to K-Pop antics, and were truly shocked by what they were seeing. When researching Memories 2020, it surprised me that some of these people remembered jikook from Rose Bowl. They were rooting for jikook. However, if the general public can show support for jikook, why can’t ARMY and what has changed recently?

Early last year COVID-19 reared its ugly head and made an appearance, causing a massive disruption around the world. This included the devastating idea to cancel the MOTS tour. The way BTS adapted to this is commendable and we still got plenty of content and songs throughout the pandemic. With no concerts, the fanservice narrative for jikook was starting to crumble. ARMY was starting to see what others saw. The increase of social media ARMY helped with this too. We had the Dynamite era, countless Bangtan Bombs featuring jikook. Then award season with MMA 2020, which highlighted their skill and trust perfectly. Fast forward nearly a year later and we have the same type of Bangtan Bomb’s with plenty of DVD content to match.

During the release of Memories 2020, the jikook account Peaches was suspended. It is no secret that the rest of the fandom ignores jikook parts of DVDs. 5th Muster and Season’s Greetings 2021 are prime examples of this. With the removal of Peaches, something interesting happened. Other accounts started uploading jikook clips. The most famous moment being the “near kiss” between jikook. This clip ended up everywhere, not just on stan Twitter but in other fandoms too like anime or gaming. It started trending around social media. There was almost no escape from it and people saw it as something else than fanservice. As I mentioned before, some of these people recognized Jimin and Jungkook from Rose Bowl. This isn’t just one moment being focused on, but they knew other moments build up jikook as who they are.

With the increase of ARMY too, this is how these clips will continue to spread around. People will see all these recent clips and, no matter what they think, they cannot ignore what they see and hear. With that, comes curiosity. And once they start looking more into the history of Jimin and Jungkook, the more they will see just how close they are. Some of the fandom might only just be seeing jikook for how they are for the first time, but this is nothing new and they will eventually experience what we first did. Jimin and Jungkook’s close relationship (however it may be defined) is starting to become accepted more within the fandom. Thank you to @themoonispurple7 for the gifs. Spring 2022 Anime Overview: GIRLS! edition

Watched three anime this season that had an all-female or 99% female cast, so why not review them together!

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls Story

So, in this anime, the main character, Eve, starts out as an underground golfer (yes in this show there is a seedy underground golfing operation) supporting her undocumented found family and thus gets deeply embroiled in the golf mafia. In the first episode she faces off against a lady in a clown mask and hits a golf ball through a moving train and calling it her rainbow bullet. In the fourth episode, she goes up against ‘Vipere the reaper’ in LITERALLY (not metaphorically) underground, ever shifting Yu-gi-oh style golf course to settle a mafia dispute.

Oh and someone dies! I mean recurring character wise. If we’re counting guys who appear only to be blown up by rocket launchers courtesy of the golf mafia, more people than that die.

Meanwhile throughout all that, Eve (who is from a fictional country that was apparently in Madlax?) and a Japanese golfer named Aoi become completely infatuated with each other and meet up for a VR golf date among other things. Then we switch to the golf high school, where Eve continues to seduce Aoi, and in the season finale (which doesn’t even bother to feel like a finale, but just cuts off like it’s going to continue next week, but we’re not getting more until 2023), offers to kiss her if she messes up in her golf game and this makes Aoi EXTEREMELY excited.

So yes, clearly this anime is amazing. I had to watch it week to week just to see what bizarre thing will happen next. Each ridiculous twist hits just right and so do the golf girlfriends, even if they end up backtracking on that (this isn’t my first rodeo).

Granted, the “golf high school” sections of it have been considerably tamer, they are still spiced up by Eve still treating everything like her life is on the line, dressing ridiculously, declaring “I’ll kill you in golf” to her opponents, who have all kinds of ridiculous over-the-top golfing strategies, being really gay, and a lot of soap opera machinations going on in the background. And we can only hope the gold mafia will return next season.

Birdie Wing is A+ camp, and makes up for its low budget (expect a lot of reused footage) with absolute commitment to its bit. Golf has become incredible and ridiculous in a way only anime can manage.

There are caveats- it can go from campy to trashy, and a lot of the issues would have been mitigated if they’d allowed these characters to be adults. One of the weird reoccurring things in the first arc is at least one line of often frankly unnecessary sexual menace per episode, made worse by the fact Eve is 15, which pretty much everyone watching was bowled over by, because she does not remotely come off as that young. Despite this, we’ll have the mafia people threatening to make Eve sell her body to fans, or an adult woman making a bet with her that she’ll “get her body” if she loses this game (Eve responds this will never happen and that she’s only got one girl in her heart which, wow, gay), and then later backstory that implies through dialogue some of the characters were forced into sex work as kids?

The reason this is mostly tolerable for me personally is because the show doesn’t revel in anyone’s discomfort or victimization for the sake of ‘fanservice’. Eve never seems particularly threatened or uncomfortable. We always feel a reassurance she’s not in any real danger, and she’s utterly unflappable and confident in the face of creeps. Vipere, who admittedly falls into every predatory bisexual stereotype, is so over the top with her wiggly tongue and vampire fangs I cannot even be mad about her, especially since after her first appearance, she no longer creeps on Eve and becomes a weird campy ally instead. But! It will be way too much for some people, and personally, I do think a lot of those lines aren’t necessary (and the implied backstory was especially ‘why’).

The golf high school portion of the anime drops the sexual menace bits entirely for typical gay high school shenanigans (unfortunately we find Aoi’s caddy is homophobic, but THAT WILL NOT STOP EVE FROM SEDUCING EVERY GIRL), but I can’t promise it won’t return. But still, I have to watch and enjoy it because this show is an experience that I cannot miss out on. Eve is a great main character, a bullheaded delinquent who treats golf like a shonen fight scene every time, and I love her. She has great chemistry with Aoi. I am braced for them to be revealed to be secret half sisters or something (the show has been dropping a lot of hints about Eve’s mysterious background) but maybe the show will surprise me and not pull such a pedestrian twist. It has definitely surprised me before.

Birdie Wing is a ridiculous show that runs on ridiculous rules, and seems like such a throwback to earlier campy anime. I can’t miss out.

The Executioner and Her Way of Life

You want more weird gay shit? Well, we’ve got more of that in the fantasy action drama yuri that is The Executioner and Her Way of Life. The anime distinguished itself by making every single isekai-loving fanboy mad when it threw the typical self-insert boy aside to focus on a morally imperiled, self-loathing assassin girl, because yes, apparently these fans are so fragile they cannot handle a dark twist preempting their power fantasy!

They’re very normal about it!

But by side-stepping that fantasy, this anime presents an actual interesting world that’s not another video game retread- one where teenagers who stumble upon a new land and become OP aren’t instantly the master of said land, but instead are easily exploited by factions who want to use their powers and only see them as easily discarded pawns, while simultaneously glorifying them to the public. To prevent this, assassins dedicate themselves to killing isekai kids the second they arrive, before they can be used to do real damage. Our main character, Menou, is one of these “executioners”, and she is fully aware how monstrous what she’s doing is and clearly regrets it but knows no other way.

So of course, she meets Akari ,a girl from another world who she can’t kill and it all goes sideways.

It’s a great premise, fraught with moral quandaries and deliciously dark worldbuilding, and it starts with a bang. At first though, it doesn’t seem to follow up on its promise very well- the first arc is entertaining, but drags a bit and settles into a fairly expected plot while giving its antagonist the most generic motivation possible- however, that arc is then saved by an equally predictable but incredibly fun plot twist that means lots of additional complexity for the characters to deal with. It was the plot twist I was rooting for, and from there, the hints of this world’s weird backstory only became more fascinating.

But aside from its premise, the other main draw of the series is the cast is entirely powerful and various-degrees-of-morally-compromised-and-absolutely-brutal women getting in cool fights and forming weird bonds. I like seeing unhinged women do murder, okay.

Even Momo, who at first seemed like she’d be a boring yandere character obsessed with Menou, grew on me. Not because she ISN’T actually obsessed with Menou- she is, but mostly she was allowed to form a very fun contentious relationship with a battle-hungry-meathead princess that could clearly function well as a beta ship and we got to see her strut her bloodthirsty stuff against dragons. Also, unlike most “incorrigibly horny lesbian” characters, the show doesn’t rely on constant groping gags (the part where she loves on Menous leg in the first ep is the worst she ever does, her other physical shows of affection are much milder and Menou seems pretty okay with them ) and Menou isn’t ever disgusted by her crush/antics, at most gently chiding her to focus while still valuing her. Menou also very actively DOESN’T want to take advantage of how Momo will do anything for her. It’s better than Kuroko in A Certain Scientific Railgun basically- a low bar to clear, but still.

Which isn’t to say this is a flawless, high quality series. It’s fun, but not without it’s jarring schlock. While the girls are all drawn surprisingly well to offset their ridiculous outfits (and some are actually less ridic compared to the light novel, believe it or not), there are some occasional scenes of schlocky fanservice, whether it’s Akari making orgasm noises when she connects to Menou in a dire moment and ruining the tension of that scene, or, probably the most hilarious case, some footage where she wiggles her ass at the camera that gets blatantly reused twice to save animation in an episode. I should also mention that there’s a very suddenly upscale in the gore and body horror for the season finale, involving a childlike figure, where the villain responsible literally says she’s indulging in her love of B-movies. This moment feels less like the usual “ha now that I’ve acknowledged the cliche it’s ok to do it” and more the writing level team saying they know this isn’t anything deep and shocking and inviting you along for the fun. (Apparently even this bit is toned down from the original light novel, which was always gory).

The yuri aspect is as slow burn as you would expect from a several volume ongoing light novel series- it’s clear that girls have it bad for Menou and they talk of their love for her, but Menou is unclear about whether she’ll reciprocate, so we get a lot of “she’s my friend!” talk. There an utterly unforgettable kiss in the OP though.

Overall, it’s not going to change the landscape of anime other than hilariously traumatizing a few bros, but I would love to see more of it. It does something different with the isekai formula, it’s a solid, occasionally mildly trashy show that boasts interesting world full of potential and lots of women doing cool magic fighting shit while yearning for each other in tantalizingly unhealthy ways. And I’m the one who’s trash for that stuff. If you’re like me, you might also enjoy this!

Healer Girl

Healer Girl was a very cute series following three girls in training to become “Healers”- people who can literally speed along the healing process with the power of song. As in, they can close up small cuts, cut asthma attacks short or even make the surgery process go a little quicker. It’s sweet, it’s cheesy, and it’s definitely magical girl adjacent. I liked the silly friendship vibe between the main three girls, and especially their relationship to their teacher. Ria’s an adult woman who mentors them and also lives with another woman who likes to dress in suits when they go out. (The series sadly doesn’t canonize them as wives, but they definitely had wife vibes and their chill partnership contrasting the tumultuous relationship between the three girls was nice.) We often don’t really have much focus on a grown woman in a mentorship position in magical girl OR idol series, so that’s what stood out to me. Unfortunately, the show didn’t do as much with that angle as I wanted. Ria was there and she was great, and had a nice connection to all the girls, but it felt like the show was hinting the whole time that her backstory would be something complex and interesting and then it just…wasn’t.

I did enjoy that one of the women she went to college with ended up being a surgical doctor and that they regularly worked together though, and that it was shown ‘healing song’ hadn’t displaced surgery, but was an aid to it. That was a neat aspect.

The series was as a whole unfocused and didn’t have a real plot to speak of- the girls all got to grow a bit as characters and as healers and they were fun to hang around with, but it was a bit disappointing that entire episodes would forget about the “Healer” part of its premise and do a school festival arc where the girls played in a band as catgirl maids like this was a regular idol show. The ending was especially pretty rushed- the girls are separated and one goes to another country but we basically see none of it.

But despite pacing issues, it was a fun, chill, cute time. It’s also a musical (the girls break into song even when it isn’t required for healing or band performances), so that gave it an enjoyable novelty as well!

I’ve actually seen many people talk about this even before i joined the fandom and recently the creators have confirmed that Shego age was between late twenties to early thirties. Even the show points out to this being the case.

And we have the live action movie which casted an age appropriate Kim and Shego and without the stylistic animation, the age difference becomes very jarring to see.

Is just that if there’s such a big age gap between Kim and Shego and has always been, then why would the writers deliberately hype the ship and play up aspects of it? I don’t know about you, but that sounds super weird.

I remember there was someone who had worked in the show (they had a sample of the last episode graduation) an d they had went on record to say that as far as they were concerned there was no delivered intent to make Kigo a thing and that the writes were seemingly against it.

But again it kinda contradicts what we saw in episode like “stop team go”.

I’m not sure, but all of this is weird.

And yeah I don’t like using words as pedo, but it’s been confirmed that Shego is at least 10 years older than Kim, which makes everything about this and the ship itself super uncomfortable to me

I should redo this and make it more organized, but here's my analysis of a canon-realistic age for Shego. This is the logic my headcanon is based on: Essay: how old is Shego? And yes, I think she starts the series in her late twenties.

I LOVE that the live-action showed a realistic age difference! I think they nailed it, and your description of "jarring" is pretty accurate when one starts to think in shipping terms. But for those of us who have always seen them as the adult and child they are, it's not really any surprise. I wish the live-action had more traction JUST for that reason. (Not to mention...Drakgo were awesome in it!)

@a113cowgirl I'm fairly certain has scans of the original script to Graduation which includes unused material, which definitely pushed Drakgo more as a couple. Now what I've heard unfortunately is that the Drakgo ending was just fanservice and not the writers' intent. What we DO know about the writers' intent, is that Kim/Ron was always endgame. It's been documented many times, and it's extremely clearly built up to in season 3, with So the Drama the always planned ending. It's season 4 that was the weird wild card.

I'll be more clear... During season 4, I don't think the writers were attempting to push the Kigo ship. I think that it was probably just recognized that hot girl on hot girl stuff...sells. The fight at the spa in Mad Dogs and Aliens... Literal mud wrestling with Shego in a bathing suit... That was wholly unnecessary. It's not trying to push the ship, it's trying to use sexuality to sell. To attract viewers. I don't care for that course of action with these characters because it encourages a child/adult ship and that is Wrong.

I feel like Stop Team Go showed a highly exaggerated version of Shego... One that ultimately probably wouldn't last in terms of friendship with Kim, because it wasn't really her and it just...wasn't real. That episode was another...pandering to fandom. A "what if they were friends" thing, clearly. Almost like fanfic onscreen.

In the end, Kim and Ron were always endgame, season four never departed from that, but the writers/animators were happy to pander to fandom a bit since they'd had quite some time to see what was popular. And in the end it's all about drawing in viewers, and thus, money.

So no, still, there was no deliberate attempt by the writers during the series to push Kigo in any way. And label it or don't label it, but Kim being a minor and Shego being a much older adult makes it not okay. If it doesn't sit right with you, it's for a reason... The reason probably being, it's a minor and an adult.

@korblez I'm counting it as close enough to 'you asked', here's a chunk of drell thinks in general xD

And the realization I've had recently that... I think I've unconsciously been developing them as a sort of... foil?? Parallel? to the asari xD Which was probably running with the designer notes of 'this entire species based on creating a single individual of Pure Fanservice'.

But yes there's elements like:

Biotics! I HC Rakhana as an eezo rich planet, and most native life had biotic potential... but it never really developed beyond that. Unlike most contemporary sapient species, drell had no prothean ruins- the most alien tech present on the planet were a handful of discarded Dragon's Teeth style items from cycles long past, knowledge of which only survives in folklore today. Once introduced to the wider galactic community though, all refugees were identified as having biotic potential, and the few who remain on Rakhana do as well. Subsequent generations have markedly lower degrees, but there is a very distinct correlation of biotics born following pilgrimage trips to the homeworld.

Rakhana is actually still inhabited... but yeah it's rough. While there were offerings to try terraforming techniques to restore some of the ecosystem, they were refused- drell are creatures of memory, after all, and future generations must be allowed to see with their own eyes what unchecked progress for progress' sake wrought. Pilgrimage, for them, is mostly a matter of seeing their own ruin: here were once verdant oases teeming with life, now dried into dust, displays of flora and fauna driven to extinction, that sort of thing. The more spiritual/hardcore sorts have a parallel journey that stops at several temples, ruins, and natural formations. Traditionally, it's done on foot with no navigation equipment, following ancient migration paths still passed down through various songs, poems, and family histories.

Drell have an absolutely unmatched oral tradition and no one will ever convince me otherwise, The Oddesy ain't got shit on some of the drell epics xD However, this comes with an unfortunate drawback, especially with the climate crisis- there was a sharp lack of written works, and when communications/storage failed, they lost an enormous amount of information.

Their lifespan being around 80 years is... Flawed. Prior to evac, it was close to current human standards, but got skewed extremely hard once Kepral's became commonplace. It's starting to climb again, thanks to improving treatments, and there are high hopes for a widely available preventative gene therapy soon. (I choose to play it as - oh, it's severe, nasty to treat/prone to reoccurring... but it is treatable, especially with early diagnosis. Also, it's not an important hc, but I imagine Dr. Saleon had a lot of drell patients back when he was active...)

Gender/sex is interesting for drell - the closest Earth analog is a trioecy system, ultimately most drell unions can potentially produce offspring (and there's been around half a dozen known cases of parthenogenesis), but on the whole, birth rates stay fairly low without intervention. Certain environmental conditions (light, temperature, & diet) can have a masculinizing or femininizing effect, but in the current day it's a lot easier to go for direct targeted hormone treatment if you're dead-set on going towards an extreme end. (As far as presentation goes: earthy/warm tones have more of a feminine association, bright/jewel tones more masculine- kind of playing off the alleged bird inspirations lol, and fashion/cultural intricacies are all over the place- if there's much of a divide in the first place. They & the hanar got lucky, neither being a species with a hard binary situation, it was a lot less fun trying to figure out how to get things to translate well with others...)

The most widely practiced branch of polytheism (particularly on Kajhe) is actually more accurately labeled a semi-omnism, drawing deities and spirits from many drell religions; an attempt to preserve as many elements of their cultures as possible and a declaration of unity as a people in the face of a broadened universe and their own near demise. Younger generations haven't held onto that so much, and there's even some who espouse an attitude of 'whatever gods we had, we killed', while others lean towards a pantheistic/siari deal. While practice isn't totally discouraged on Kajhe, it's hard to find more than a household shrine; several high-profile priests died under... questionable circumstances within the last twenty years or so, and funerary procedures are almost exclusively drawn from Enkindler doctrines; a drell enclave on the Citadel is the current hub for the more devout.

There was/still is a serious thing with debt/gratitude in drell culture- there's no convenient 'oh I forgot you did that!' lol. You treat people well, because they will remember! This is partly what led to the Compact- refugees who felt they owed the hanar a genuine life debt, and a few families feel it lingers through subsequent generations- after all, they wouldn't be there otherwise, right? Thane's family were among that group, so as far as he knew, that was just how things worked. He... never entirely reconciled Irikah's pointing out that it was one thing for first generation- or even present adults- to make that choice, something else entirely to give up a child just developing their permanent memory. (But hey, he agreed to keeping Kolyat out of it, so... progress?)

Drell cuisine tends to go wild on flavour/seasoning, and a major part of post-evacuation culture has been food-oriented- learning new dishes, adapting old ones, fusion cuisine is a massive hit, and if you're invited for a visit, you are getting dinner and extra for the next night.

On the whole they lean towards fairly social- multigenerational households are the norm, and especially around Kajhe and the Citadel, you'll often find otherwise unaffiliated single adults meeting at a dinner table. Even the more introverted will tend towards lurking in crowded spots. Ok this one seems to go against a common take I've seen, and it's that drell can handle (relative) temperature extremes either way- I imagine Rakhana tends towards hot days and cold nights, so it takes a fair bit for either cold or heat to get to them. (That said, heat tolerance > cold tolerance, but it's still more than most humans can take xD)

Recently I saw Naruto account official on Twitter, post hinata confession and she talking about her ninja way. People and hinata fans take into too much account and admiration hinata confession in pain war.

When I read that chapter again after a lot of years, I saw how selfish it was, but people see it as a proof of pure love, and they selectively forget for example sasuke sacrifice in war arc.

So, what are the differences between these 2 moments? And how they both impacted on naruto since both moments made him released tails(with hinata one is obvious is not just about her but anyway)?

I think the purpose of these advertising gimmicks is to show how NH is the loveliest canon couple in the entire series to bait new audience or as a fanservice. Couple of days ago, in one of the Twitter Polls... Sakura came out as this popular character as compared to Nami from One Piece... And According to Boruto polls conducted by ViZ Media, Sasuke comes behind Sakura and Hinata in popularity... (***Face Palming Hardly***)... It's best to ignore these Click-Baits altogether.

Sasuke's sacrifice in war arc

Both moments made him release tails

Sasuke’s sacrifice... You mean the Land of the Waves (LoTW) Arc??? And Naruto didn’t release any tails during that Arc... It was only during his battle with Orochimaru in Part 2, he released his 4th Tail.

With all that being said,

Of Course, Yes... There are some noticeable difference between what happened in the Pain Arc & in the LoTW and Sasuke-Sai Arc.

Reason:

For Hinata

She jumped in front of Naruto to propose her love.... That’s all.... It was not out of any Selflessness.... Or if she really wanted to protect her Naruto-kun, She should have become stronger by training herself harder in the past 3 years. Well, She confessed lot of crap shit but ended up doing nothing... What can we expect from this Liar!!!???

For Sasuke

He jumped in front of Naruto because he simply can’t help it.... It’s out of Instinct... It’s out of his uncontrollable desperation to save Naruto at all costs despite having a Personal Goal to achieve.

He already started to love him unconditionally without expecting any reciprocation from Naruto... And that’s why his body moved on it’s own.

She failed to save him as promised... She also failed to die... As she claimed... Another string of lies...

He protected him successfully and died for him... almost....

Kishimoto is not at all holding back.... He went all out with his description about Naruto’s Rage and the source of that rage being Sasuke... Whereas with Hinata, “The Culmination of all negative emotions”

This is Naruto thinking about the people he lost while he met with Pain.... It’s with these people he had strong feelings for.... If he had any strong feelings for Hinata, he must have remembered something.... PLUS HE SHOULD’VE ACCEPTED HER PROPOSAL....

For Sasuke

On my First Watch.... I thought Naruto’s power awakening was kind of Random... I just didn’t know the meaning behind it... But then during the Forest of the Death... Orochimaru gives this interesting information...

“When your emotions are heightened.... The power of nine-tails overflows...”

That’s when I wondering What was the reason behind Naruto’s strong emotion during LoTW Arc.... But then I forgot it... [[Not to mention... Naruto evoked the power of Kyuubi in that Forest of the Death scene... to protect Sasuke... LOL]]

Then only I understood the Reason....

That Naruto knew Sasuke from his childhood... And that’s why he could feel strongly about Sasuke...

Whereas with Hinata there was no reason... She was just some random girl...

Just thought I’d weigh in with something, since I know my posts as of late can come off as kinda anti-SFW, or demonizing the SFW community as a whole. I don’t want to feel like a few bad apples spoil the bunch, since I do have SFW blogs following me that are very pleasant people - and are just as fed up with the Puritanism and denial running rampant in the tk community. If for whatever reason you do feel uncomfortable with me interacting with your blog, I just want to give my two cents: I can assure you, I’m not getting off to your SFW art, writing, reblogs etc. I’m not automatically thinking of tickle scenes in a lewd or NSFW context. If something is very clearly suggestive, then yes, I’m going to view it in a not-so-innocent way. But when it comes down to it, I keep my lewdness to my own OCs, or fav characters that are very clearly fodder for fanservice and lewd content (ex: Ban from Seven Deadly Sins. That man makes me r a b i d ) Personally, there’s a threshold for me where thoughts of tickling start off as the typical flustered, giddy, fight-or-flight excitement. It gives me a warm-fuzzy affectionate cuddly feeling, I can physically feel serotonin/dopamine in my system when I’m tickled. And I don’t want to tickle people with the intent of making them horny; I’m a gremlin revenge-Ler that, at the end of the day, just likes to see people laugh and loosen up. If pushed past that point, then the warm-fuzzies very much become hot-and-bothered. Half of my ticklish spots are erogenous zones. And if placed in front of a hot (and extremely ticklish) bod with exposed midriff and a bratty (or subby) attitude, I ain’t lookin respectfully and I wanna hear more sounds out of them than just laughter. But I’m not going to push that onto any and every character I see. Yes, tickling is still a kink to me, and I’m fully of the mind that the “butterflies” are still a form of arousal. It’s a form of desire for more physically affectionate and intimate attention. IMO it hits the same points of the brain as getting a really good massage, getting gratuitous head scritchies, having a good cuddle session with a lover. And much like how a kiss can escalate into a make-out session and beyond, tickling can be a build-up into something more intimate. But as someone on the ace/demi spectrum, I don’t automatically expect it to take a sexual turn.

I think some people in this community need to remember that SFW at its core does not mean “No lewd or mildly suggestive content whatsoever” or “Sex-repulsed only”. The textbook definition is simply “No graphic or nude content”. You can be SFW and still be kinky. You can like NSFW and not view everything in a kinky context. You can draw nudity and not have any feelings of sexual excitement from it.

If you’re still uncomfortable with interacting with me because I do post some NSFW content or sometimes view tickling in an erotic context, then I understand! I will always try to keep a respectful distance from blogs that are strict about no NSFW content. And you can always unfollow or block me if it’s for the sake of your own comfort. Just please don’t jump to conclusions about people who aren’t sex-repulsed.

I don't know how to explain this but TFATWS reads a lot like “yes Sam and Bucky are romantically involved but this is not a romance so we won't delve into their relationship”.

If you think about it, in Marvel movies, the romance is not at the center of the plot. Even in solo movies, there is usually just one kiss, never more. And it the Avengers, there are usually no kissed between the couples.

I'm trying to stay away my shipper googles but even then, some scenes don't make sense to me. I love watching movies and TV shows and one thing I like is that dialogues are not put there randomly, the script has a meaning, the words have a meaning, and the scenes they decide to keep have a meaning.

And for some of the Sambucky scenes in TFATWS, I’m struggling to find any other meaning than “Sam and Bucky had feelings for eachother at some point”.

You can argue that jokes about the 2 partners being more than just friends is a recurring joke in a lot of buddy cop movies, but in those movies, it is usually a joke, just for laughs. The only scenes that would fall into that category in the FATWS are the rolling in the flower field scene and the therapy lesson scene where Sam and Bucky get so close that there legs are intertwined.

All the other scenes are so emotionally heavy it's difficult to categorize them as only fanservice, or two guys being friends. I'm not saying they aren't any emotional scenes in buddy cop movies, but usually the emotional scenes don't go as deep as what we've seen in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

I tried to look at all their scenes together and split them into different categories, and I stilll end up with some scenes that point to a relationship that goes beyond friendship between Sam and Bucky:

Scenes that fall into the fanservice category and there just for laughs:

The bickering about wizards and sorcerers in episode 2

The rolling in the flower field scene and the beginning of the therapy scene.

Sam asking Bucky to do something when the Dora Milaje are attacking John Walker in episode 4

Scenes that can be seen as purely friendship:

In episode 2:

Bucky deciding to follow Sam because I quote "he doesn't trust Redwing". What is that even supposed to mean? ... He probably meant I don't trust Redwing to protect Sam like he would.

Bucky standing up from the stack where he was sitting on, to go sit next to Sam when they were on the flight back from their mission.

Sam waiting for Bucky in the police station, even though they try to act as if they're not friends

Sam agreeing to go see Zemo with little to no protest

In episode 3:

Sam making sure Bucky is alright and asking him if he's ok

Sam touching Bucky's metal arm when he’s pretending to be the Winter Soldier

In episode 4:

Bucky saying "I'm going with you" when Sam says Karli wants to meet with him alone.

In episode 5:

The shield practice scene when they have a heart-to-heart talk in episode 5 about what the shield meant for Bucky and Bucky finally apologizing for the way he treated Sam and explaining how as a White man he couldn't possibly know what it would mean for Sam to be Captain America

Scenes that make no sense if we see their relations as just friendship:

In episode 2:

The therapist said she heard a lot about Sam, she wants Sam to stay for the therapy for I don't know what reason, she makes them do a couple exercise, and says it explicitly.

Why would the therapist say she heard a lot about about Sam, that she want to do a couples exercise with them? Those scenes alone are alright, but when you take them together it's quite interesting.

The couples therapy trope has been used in a lot of Buddy cop movies or TV shows, but usually they don't delve into sensitive topics like they did in TFATWS, the scene was so emotional for a few seconds, I forgot it was a Marvel show.

In episode 3:

When Bucky tells Sam he helped Zemo escape, Sam was furious, and couldn't stop yelling at Bucky about how insane his plan was, and Sam was right. But the moment Bucky looks him in the eyes and basically says, "please do it for me", Sam agrees right away... Excuse me what??? How does this make sense?

If my friends ask me to work with an international criminal who just escaped from prison, I wouldn't just stop arguing with them just because they looked at me with puppy eyes. I would continue to yell at them until the end of the mission. Sam was like, “ok, ok, I'll do it for you”? I'm sorry but that is not friendship only, it's something else.

In Episode 5:

Can we talk about Bucky's reaction when Torres arrived in Episode 5?? The annoyed face when Torres walks in and Bucky walking away right after that, without even saying goodbye? Torres is the sweetest soul on earth, how can anybody hate him? Why would Bucky not like him??? This scene make no sense unless they're trying to tell us that Bucky is jealous or something.

Bucky asking a favor to Ayo, when he's not in good terms with the Wakandans. I'm sorry but do you realize how heavy this scene is? Ayo, just told Bucky that he should lay low for a while, and Bucky understands that, but his first thought is "I need to get a gift from Sam" first. Nope nope nope, you can't tell me this is just friendship. Ok, maybe it is, but I don't understand this filming choice. Plotwise, Sam could have asked for a suit or new wings himself. I'm sure Sam is in very good terms with T'Challa and the Wakandans... What does it mean that Bucky was the one to ask for it as a gift to Sam, when Bucky was in a already in a difficult situation with the Wakandans due to him freeing Zemo.

Bucky touching Sam's waist to ask him to move when he starts helping him with the boat repair. And Bucky coming from behind to do so, giving us a very short but intimate scene.

Their conversation about Bucky staying over for the night: Bucky saying he doesn't want to make things weird with Sam and his family by staying over, and Sam saying how the people in the town are so open-minded. Why would they have that conversation if Sam and Bucky are only friends? Sarah knows about Bucky and his past, she know that he and Sam are friends (sort of), why would a friend staying over make things weird between him and his family? Why would Sam need to say that the people in this town are open-minded?

The video montage of them building the boat the day after. Anyone knows why they would show us that if they were only friends, and with THAT music choice?

The extra long handshake at the end of their training scene, when they kept holding hands and looking into eachother’s eyes while talking together, and Bucky basically says he'll be there for Sam whenever he needs him.

I’m sorry but it doesn’t seem to me that they are being portrayed as just friends

Usually in buddy cop movies/ TV Shows, there are always joke but in the FATWS, some scenes are so emotional that I feel like I'm missing something. Bucky has this whole passive agressive behavior with Sam and yet he's unable to let Sam go on a mission on his own. One thing I really can't understand is that Bucky always seems know where to find Sam, as if he had been keeping tabs on him.

So yes, there's definitely chemistry between Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, due to their friendship but it’s not only that. The writers and director have made the choice to keep some scenes and some dialogues ambiguous.

In some of the scenes we can see that there's more to Bucky and Sam's story than we know.

And they're not the first Marvel couple to have a similar treatment: Wanda and Vision's relationships was very subtle at the beginning, same for Natasha and Bruce, we rarely see them together explicitly but we knew they had a relationship.

It's the same for Sam and Bucky, some of the scenes only make sense if there has been a romantic relationship between Sam and Bucky at some point.

To me it's really like Sam and Bucky are set up as a couple or at least two people who have been romantically involved in the past, but the show won't expand on that because this is a superhero show, not a romance.

In an action movie, you would see some couples, or people who are obviously in a relationship or hints that there is something going on between them, but rarely would you see a kiss, that’s what I feel is happening here.

Last point: if Sam and Bucky had kissed in Episode 5 after their talk, it wouldn't have been out of nowhere and it wouldn't have changed anything to the plot. That's how I know my theory isn't that far-fetched.

I would love to hear your thoughts about some or all of these scenes (especially the Torres one, that one is driving me crazy) and see what you think about it?

If you see their relationship being portrayed as pure friendship, I would like to know why. And would also love to hear how you guys interpret their other scenes together and if you have some different point of views about the scenes in the show.

but I just feel too tired to be fighting

this is a follow-up post to what I said in my recap the other day about this arc being the Deku Angst arc, as opposed to the Villain Hunt arc or the Deku SIXQUIRKS Exhibition arc. I feel like the fandom discussion tends to focus on the flashier parts of the chapters -- the sexy villains and the new quirk reveals and the Shindous -- each week, and so the quieter emotional beats sometimes get overlooked, especially since the character arc here is playing out in little bits and pieces over time rather than all at once.

this has always been a very reactionary fandom, and there’s a tendency to judge the chapters week to week without ever going back to look at how they all fit into the big picture. so I figured I would try to attempt that, and basically go chapter by chapter here to look at what exactly Horikoshi is setting up and how it all fits together.

so let’s start with the end of chapter 306, which is when the arc officially kicks off. specifically with the very last page:

this is imo one of the best pages Horikoshi has ever drawn. I got the sense that this was a scene he’d had in his mind’s eye for quite a long time, and that he was excited to finally get to this part of the story. it’s extremely effective as both a chapter-ender, and an arc-opener. like, look at this:

it establishes the initial premise of the new arc -- the world is in chaos, and Deku is now seemingly on his own

it leaves the readers with a number of questions. why did Deku leave U.A.?? is he really on his own now?? why does he look so beat-up and exhausted?? what is he up to?? what is the world like now that all these villains have been unleashed and the heroes have been decimated?? and most importantly of all, what the fuck is going to happen next??

it pays homage to some of Horikoshi’s comic book influences -- Batman in particular

it dramatically hits us with that “THE FINAL ACT BEGINS” and lets us know that shit is getting real now

that’s some good shit. so much so that I think people tended to overlook the other notable thing about this page amidst all of the initial excitement and discussion and speculation about where the series was headed. and that is the fact that the final panel in this chapter is NOT the panel of Deku standing above the city. the very last panel, the one that this chapter actually ends on, is instead the close-up of Deku’s face. his face, which is covered in shadow; and his eyes, which have dark circles under them and are prominently missing the usual flecks of light that give him his signature “sunny optimistic shounen protagonist” look.

not to mention this last line here, which is a call back to the very first time we saw the 14-year-old Deku way back in chapter one.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Horikoshi chose to throw this reference in. nor is it a coincidence that THIS is the scene he actually chose to end the chapter on. what this does is show us the drastic shift in Deku’s emotional state of mind, and his attitude towards being a hero. he’s gone from being thrilled and excited to being jaded and exhausted. he’s matured, but at a great cost. it’s always been his dream to be a hero, but “be careful what you wish for” is a popular adage for a reason. and right now he looks the furthest thing from happy.

and this is the emotional beat that Horikoshi chooses to end the chapter on. this is the panel that closes out the War arc, and begins the final act. to me the message could not be clearer -- this arc will be about the exploration of Deku’s character, and his struggle as he tries to live up to the expectations that have been placed on him as the Last Holder of OFA and quite possibly the World’s Only Hope.

it’s a character arc that builds on a lot of the things we’ve already learned about Deku over the course of the series, such as the fact that he is reckless, and that he focuses on others often at the expense of himself. but more importantly, it’s an arc that finally expands on the dark side of what has up until now been a net positive for Deku -- the power of OFA. up until this point, despite its ups and downs, it’s been a boon for Deku overall and has allowed him to pursue his dream. but now we’re finally reaching the point where the monkey’s paw part of the OFA blessing/curse finally starts to come into play. OFA gives Deku more power than he could have ever dreamed of, but it also comes with a built-in destiny that he can’t opt out of whether he likes it or not. AFO is on the loose and out there trying to destroy the world. and now everyone has pinned their hopes on this sixteen-year-old kid, and the question of whether or not the sixteen-year-old kid is ready is apparently not one that anyone feels inclined to ask (possibly because they’re afraid that the answer might be “no”).

he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. he has to do it, because there’s no one else who can. that’s the kind of pressure that is on Deku now.

and on that note, we begin the Deku Angst arc.

chapter 307

this in hindsight was mostly just a set-up chapter to better establish the current state of the BnHA world at large (spoilers: it’s not good), while also providing an answer for one of the big initial questions of the arc -- namely, “what happened to all of those villains that AFO released from Tartarus?” these are important things to touch on, but the pacing could definitely have been better, and the bulk of the chapter was dedicated to providing fanservice to all of the Shindou fans who spammed the most recent popularity poll (which, whatever lol). anyway, so this was the sole chapter thus far with absolutely no Deku development. thankfully the arc picks up from there.

chapter 308

on to the next one! this was the one and only chapter thus far which I think actually qualifies as an “exhibition fight.” this was definitely all about showing off Deku’s current powerset, as well as introducing us to another of the SIXQUIRKS. however, there was Deku development here as well, most notably in this scene:

this is the scene that got a lot of people speculating that this arc was going to focus on Deku hunting down all of the old villains. but I think people got so caught up in that speculation that they overlooked what this scene tells us about Deku’s mindset. and yes, there is new information being revealed here, and it’s not just a rehash of the stuff we already knew. like yes, we know that Deku was shaken up by the recent encounters with Dabi and Tomura, and we know that made him start questioning why villains become villains in the first place, and all that good stuff, and that’s great. however, there are two additional important things that this scene helps establish for us.

the upcoming battle with TomurAFO is weighing heavily on Deku’s mind. this is something that will become a recurring theme in this arc. Deku is thinking about this constantly. the question of what to do when he finally encounters TomurAFO again is knocking incessantly at the back of his mind, and this won’t be the last time it comes up.

Deku is using these villain encounters as test runs. can Tomura be redeemed?? is he just being stupid and naïve?? or is this really something worth attempting?? the interesting thing about this is that Deku’s resolve to save people is usually so strong and unwavering that it’s more than enough to overcome any doubts that he might have. but this time it seems like the repeated objections posed by the Vestiges and Gran Torino have really gotten to him. it’s possible I’m just reading way too much into things, but to me it really feels like Deku’s recent attempts at Talk no Jutsu were meant to do more than just show his growing awareness that the line between heroes and villains is thinner than he once imagined. they’re also serving as trial runs for the real test, when it finally comes. if he can “save” even a villain like Muscular, there’s hope for him being able to save Tomura as well. and so that moment when Muscular rejects him out of hand is all the more disappointing to him, even if it wasn’t really unexpected. basically it wasn’t the answer that he had been hoping for.

aside from those little notes though, like I said, this was unquestionably an exhibition fight first and foremost. which is fine; we needed to establish where Deku is currently in terms of strength, and it was also just fun to see him kick some ass, ngl. in terms of story purpose this chapter was similar to 219, which showed us how Shouto and Katsuki had powered up after getting their provisional licenses. people who don’t care about those characters might argue that these fights weren’t necessary, but as someone who stans all three characters hard, I would disagree! but anyways, moving on.

chapter 309

in contrast to the previous chapter, this chapter focuses more on establishing Deku’s current mental state, as opposed to his physical state. and this is what we learn:

(1) Deku is ~technically~ being shadowed/accompanied by All Might and the Hawksquad (but in practice he’s avoiding them).

(2) it was Deku’s own decision to leave U.A., and he did it because he didn’t want anyone else getting hurt in order to protect him.

and finally, (3) Deku’s game plan is to stop Tomura and All for One before they reach full power.

this last part is very important, because it means there’s a countdown in effect. as far as Deku is concerned, there’s only a finite amount of time before TomurAFO becomes unstoppable. which means that he’s not only under “gotta get stronger” pressure, but time pressure as well. he doesn’t have the luxury of taking his time and training in safety. he’s being rushed now; this is do-or-die.

this chapter is also the first in this arc in which we get to see Deku’s expressions without the hood covering up his face, and what we see is very telling. as previously stated, the light is gone from Deku’s eyes. he keeps his expressions very neutral, and the only time we even see a hint of a smile is when he hugs his mom in the flashback, and it’s clear from the dialogue (“it’s okay, I’ll come home to you”) that he’s doing it for her sake in order to comfort her.

but aside from that, this is very much not the Deku we’ve grown accustomed to. this is the chapter that really establishes his current mental state imo. above all else, he’s afraid that more people will get hurt because of him, and so he’s distancing himself from everyone around him. and he’s also morbidly preoccupied with the inevitability of having to face TomurAFO again, and soon. the chapter ends on the flashback of Gran giving him his cape, and telling Deku that “killing can be another way to save someone.” there’s a lot on this kid’s mind, to say the least.

chapter 310

this chapter opens with a gang of civilians who are trying to open fire on a nice fox lady whose only crime was walking around in the rain at night. Deku intervenes to save her, and it’s the first time in this arc that we see anything close to the “old” Deku, who just wanted to save people with a smile.

but it’s bittersweet, because all the lady can talk about is how scared she was, and how horrible everything is right now. and so Deku, who feels responsible in a lot of ways for everything that’s happened, just feels that much more pressure to somehow make things right again.

there’s also this extra throwaway line which is especially heartbreaking:

“I can’t afford to be around anyone.” fucking ouch. just reinforcing once more how incredibly isolated Deku is right now -- not by choice, but because he feels like it’s not safe to let anyone else get close to him. and so he’s out here running around this dystopian cityscape in the middle of the night in the pouring rain all on his own, and neglecting himself to the point where All Might practically has to force a bento on him.

but does he complain? of course not. because his focus is never on himself. instead, when he settles down to eat, his thoughts immediately drift back to, guess who...

it’s that time pressure once again. “unless I draw out One for All’s full power, I can’t stop any of this.” it’s just nonstop, I have to get stronger, I’m running out of time, I have to do better, and constantly thinking about that inevitable confrontation.

Deku is a thinker, you guys. and when left to his own devices he will overthink, every time. his mind will run in endless loops while he mentally works his way through all of the possibilities. and that’s one of his greatest strengths, don’t get me wrong, but at a time like this it’s also one of his greatest weaknesses. it’s just so fucking easy for him to get stuck in his own head, in his endless rambling thoughts and analyses. and without anyone else there to help distract him, or help him focus, he’s become fixated on his mission, and it’s slowly consuming him.

this, incidentally, is also the chapter in which we finally see Two and Three’s faces, and learn why Two in particular is so reluctant to lend his power to Deku. he appears to be the lone holdout at this point, so stay tuned on that, because I don’t doubt this will wind up being crucial to Deku’s future development, however it winds up playing out.

chapter 311

this chapter flips back to the Hawksquad for the first half, so we get a brief respite from the ongoing Dekuangst. right before we switch back though, we do get confirmation of something we had pretty much already guessed:

like, that much was already apparent based on what we’d seen (the bags under his eyes; the fact that he refused to sit still in any one place for very long even at night), but it’s always nice to get the official confirmation so that people can’t dispute it lol. so yeah, Deku isn’t sleeping much. and not eating much either, if all he’s getting is the occasional bento from Dadmight. so basically not taking care of himself at all, huge shocker there. but this is something that’s important enough to the story that Horikoshi took the time to point it out in the dialogue, in addition to all of the visual clues we’d already gotten.

and just in case we needed to drive that point in any further, this chapter ends with the appearance of Lady Nagant! like yeah, no shit Deku isn’t getting much sleep, what with him having to fend off racist civilians and hired assassins every five fucking minutes. smdh. can he live??

chapter 312

so this is the chapter that properly introduces Lady Nagant, who maaaay or may not be one of the primary antagonists of this arc?? like, it’s really unclear right now tbh, but she gets hyped up by Hawks and AFO, and has a flashback and a mysterious past and a weird trump card (where did you go, Overhaul) and all that good shit, so yeah? one can hope at any rate.

but anyway. so to his credit, Deku’s first thought is to retreat, but he quickly abandons that plan once he figures out Nagant’s location. this is played off like a logical strategic decision at first, but the subsequent chapter quickly makes it clear that Deku’s decision to take the fight to Nagant is less rational than he might have you think.

chapter 313

so yeah. last but not least, the most recent chapter, in which Deku’s real reason for targeting Lady soon becomes apparent:

what’s more, it quickly becomes clear that he miscalculated and probably would have been better off following Hawks’s advice, seeing as he promptly gets himself shot, and subsequently realizes that AFO gave Nagant an extra quirk, something he hadn’t taken into account. but instead of cutting his losses and running at this point, he doubles down instead and not only breaks out Smokescreen, but also the Third’s quirk which he has never even used before.

it’s worth noting that both En and the Third start telling him to chill at this point, and warn him that what he’s attempting is too dangerous. but tbh if they were expecting him to listen, they haven’t been reading the same arc I’ve been reading. once again, Horikoshi makes it clear that Deku has one thing and one thing only on his mind right now.

of course. once again it all comes back to this. hunt down AFO. it doesn’t matter that he’s exhausted. it doesn’t matter that he’s just been shot twice. it doesn’t matter that Hawks, despite knowing what Deku was capable of with his OFA abilities, specifically warned him away from this one person only. it doesn’t matter that even the Vestiges are trying to tell him you’re going too fast and you’re trying to do too much and it’s too dangerous.

he just doesn’t care. long story short, the only thing that matters to Deku right now is tracking down and defeating TomurAFO. and as the person who knows him best once so aptly put it, “he doesn’t take himself into account.” and therein lies the major challenge of this arc.

and so this is where we’re currently at now. and this has been a very long post, but if nothing else, I hope I was able to get this one point across: there is absolutely no way that Deku will be able to defeat TomurAFO as he is now. not a chance in hell. somehow he’s managed the uncommon feat of waging a war of attrition against himself, which is really quite an accomplishment. he’s not taking care of himself, and he’s refusing to listen to sound advice from the people surrounding him, and is trying to skip ahead to the final boss battle before he’s ready, because the guilt and pressure from feeling responsible for the current situation are eating him up. the only way that the world can go back to normal is if he can defeat AFO; therefore he has to do it as soon as possible, because time is running out and everyone is counting on him. this is who Deku is. and this is what inevitably happens when his saving mentality is taken to extremes, and left unchecked.

anyway so to wrap up this post now, I do think this arc is a lot more cohesive than it’s gotten credit for thus far, and Deku is the glue holding it all together. I for one am loving the exploration of his character and all the subtle little angsty touches as we build up to the big moment, whenever it finally comes. just keep in mind though that if his decisions right now seem reckless and short-sighted, it’s because they’re supposed to seem that way, because Deku is not in a good mental state right now. the cracks are finally showing in our perfect protagonist, just like everyone has been wanting this whole time. he is just a kid. he is doing his best. he is trying far too hard to do his best, and it is hurting him so badly, but he doesn’t even realize. this arc is not an endorsement of the Angsty Nomad Hero lifestyle, lol. it’s the exact fucking opposite, and I think it’s being wildly misinterpreted with all of the emphasis on “oh look at that, he mastered another quirk with no effort”, as opposed to “oh look at that, he is shutting down emotionally and is a few more missed nights of sleep away from a complete and total breakdown.”

tl;dr the overarching storyline of this arc is all about Deku slowly falling apart due to his trauma from Jakku, and the subsequent pressure that was put on him by the Vestiges with their whole “GUESS WHAT, YOU’RE THE LAST USER OF OFA, THAT’S RIGHT, IT’S ALL ON YOU BUDDY” pep talk. and mark my words, things are not going to go according to plan. something is going to go terribly wrong here. whether it’s something happening to All Might, or AFO setting up a trap for him, either way Deku is being set up to fail in a major way. unless of course, someone (or a group of someones) manages to intervene first, and possibly stage an intervention or something. it’s what he needs right now, but idk if Horikoshi is going to make it that easy.

anyway, but in other words, the point of this arc is not to show how much stronger Deku has gotten and how he doesn’t even need his friends anymore. it’s the exact opposite -- the point of this arc is to show that Deku needs his friends now more than ever. that in spite of OFA and all of its mystical trappings and fancy SIXQUIRKS, Deku can’t do this alone. he needs his friends. that’s the core message. and right now, we are at the “I can get by on my own” part of the story. and the part we are all waiting for, but which is coming -- I guarantee it is coming, you guys -- is “the thing is, you don’t have to.”

and that shit is going to slap hard you guys. and I for one can’t wait. but until then, enjoy the angst.

lol the edits with taeyong and doyoung and rose are so funny i had never seen rose with other neos! i guess people will ship any girl to a guy if they breathe next to each other.

yeah dotae are very platonic to me. that's just how i see them. and when i put dotae and jaeyong next to jaedo, they really pale in comparison to jaedo. i think it comes down to what people want out of their media romance. i gravitate towards a love like jaedo's. the way jaehyun acts with doie is truly unmatched and adorable.

i agree with your point about the rings + taking the focus off jaedo. i think what makes me call it fanservice is how doyoung pushed ring-gate to the forefront of the public eye. it was a calculated move on doyoung's part. lucas and winwin also have friendship rings and no one talks about it. other neos share similar things that dont get noticed or talked about. i dont think 6k is that much, because the og intention was to have nice rings with your bestie.

taeyong wanted friendship rings. taeyong told doyoung in private he wanted them. and doyoung made it public in that famous clip (kiss on the hand). and then he went and got the rings and called taeyong during the vlive telling him to show them lol we get it doyoung you wanna make it an announcement ahahahaha. at the time i didnt even think this, i thought it was super cute, and that it was just because doyoung was jealous of baekhyun. but in retrospect i see things differently. doyoung curates his idol image, didnt he say so himself?

and btw, i think taeyong is gay, or another lgbtqia+ identity, just not plain straight basically. but in love with doyoung? no. especially when doyoung is in love with someone else? that would be hella awkward for the entire 127 and it would bleed into their interactions at least a little. do you think jaehyun shows signs of being jealous of taeyong? i honestly never noticed that.

You are correct, people will ship anyone who stood 10 m from each other. I simply write two random names and google, most of the time I get a return of at least a few manips for any combo. These manips are mostly done for wattpad stories, maybe that's why you didn't come across them on TW. aespa is heavily shipped with Dream, for example.

Jaehyun/Karina is also a thing. I guess it's just the "most popular+most popular" and "most handsome + most beautiful" equation. And whether some particular combo becomes widespread is a chance thing (if an acc with lots of followers starts to post about a certain ship, naturally, it will get advantage over other variants).

I wish I can say that 6k is not much... heh.

Yes, Do used the rings, and Tae didn't like it (instead of the rings he talked too much about Do's new pendant, heh). I must say that I can't know it 100%, but, personally, I'm pretty positive Do called from his holiday with Jae in Guri, that's why Tae was hurt. The rings were supposed to be "their" secret thing, maybe Tae even envisioned some cheap ones bought together in some small store during a walk (or wanted to buy them himself, he did ask for the ring size, afterall), but instead the rings ended to be more as PR and a cover up. Tae even said the rings are DoTae+fans during that vlive.

I think Taeyong is straight, and everyone is lucky it is so, heh. Jae and Tae struggle to share Doyoung as it is.

Yes, Jaehyun was jealous of Taeyong (and practically all other members) before JaeDo started dating. There is an understanding now, though. One should remember that Jae was Tae's maknae before Doyoung even entered SM. JaeYong have their own hyung-dongsaeng history.

My thoughts on What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?

The very title of the episode sends a shiver down my spine. And this is where we’re going to start.

~ long post under the cut ~

A year ago, I wrote this post as an attemp to dive into one of the most important traits in Doctor Strange’s personality: love. Stephen is a being made of love, made to love, no matter which interpretation you have when you watch Infinity War. If you don’t read comic books, you’ll understand the moment you meet Donna. You’ll begin to understand how her death reshaped his entire subjectivity out of fear of failing, being powerless and unable to control everything around him (especially death), thus the arrogant and yet a disaster of a man we all know.

Where do I even start? Stephen loved her sister deeply and felt responsible for her death. And then, slowly, he also lost his parents and his brother. He fell in love with Clea but he also pushed her away. He loved Zelma platonically and lied to her, which was enough for them to break their bond. He felt attracted to Kanna but screwed things up, even though they remain friends. He was forced to kill the Ancient One, the only father figure he had ever since his father died. And lastly, the only person who would never leave his side... also left. Yes, even Wong. Stephen has SO much love to give but he’s also afraid because he’s cursed. He truly believes his love in poison. And would you look at that? What If really delivered a story where this is actually true.

What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?

The level of understanding when it comes to the character is... inconceivable. What could possibly reshape Stephen into following a dark path but love? The very premise of the whole episode. This is so much more than a love letter. This is literally too much, in all senses.

Fine, let’s begin.

What if the best of intentions has very strange consequences?

No. You used the word “strange” for the pun but this is not the word. Nah-ah. I’d go with ATROCIOUS, for starters. Things are gonna escalate so quickly, my friends.

Seriously, tho? Christine is SO SO SO SO beautiful, they’re so cute together. I have this feeling that MCU!Stephen was quite toxic because of his arrogance and this is why they didn’t work out. But WhatIf!Stephen???????? He’s always praising her, teasing her in a healthy way, respecting her and listening to her. HE TRULY LOVES HER, I’M GONNA CRY ALL OVER AGAIN, PLEASE, NOT THE CRÈME BRÛLÉE, PLEASE

I’m going to leave this shot here because we need to go back to it later. Hold that thought.

And bonus points to “Yeah, well, I would call that quite remarkable.” / “Well, I would say the same about you.”

GODS. THE PAIN. STOP THE PAIN.

So in this reality, Stephen didn’t caused the car accident because he was checking his phone while driving. Also it was not the reckless attempt to pass the truck. Well, maybe it was the consequence of this act? The fact is, the car behind them loses control, which makes them crash. Does it matter? We’ll learn later that no, it doesn’t.

And yep... Christine dies. Have you noticed the shattered heart? Ah, the pain only gets better and better.

Again, Stephen blames himself. More than anything, this is so important because Stephen is all about guilt. We still need to meet Donna so we can add yet another layer of guilt. But the feeling exists. This is what corrupts Stephen’s heart and soul in all his iterations. This is what makes him the character I love so much. I love this SO. MUCH. In addition, his stubbornness to accept his condition. Man won’t take a no. This, this is Doctor Strange in character. Stop complaining about NWH Stephen, it’s pathetic.

Okay, “grief-stricken”, Stephen found the Mystic Arts and became a sorcerer. That’s when he learned about the Time Stone, the Eye of Agamotto and Dormammu. Nothing changes, he saves the universe. But time does not heal his deepest wound.

I love Wong so much. Every time Wong does something, the world is healed. Really. We’re going back to him as well but for now I’ll just leave this shot.

BUT STEPHEN, DOING SOMETHING RECKLESS? HE’D NEVAH

Aaaaaaaannnnnnd then he did.

He goes back in time. It’s been two years since he lost Christine. I think he reacted pretty nicely, despite the circumstances. Now let’s go back to that shot I said I was saving for later.

Stephen is so light-hearted here. Also, during the first time he lost Christine, he had no idea what “The Price is Right” was. He knows now, which means he probably tried to learn more about the show because of her, because of grief. HAHAHA MORE PAIN

AND THEN HE

AND THEN SHE DIES AGAIN

AND THEN HE KEEPS GOING BACK IN TIME

AND SHE KEEPS DYING

AND THE MUSIC

AND HIS VOICE

AND HE TRIES TO CHANGE FATE BUT IT CAN’T BE AVERTED

HE EVEN TRIES TO STAY AWAY FROM HER LIFE BUT SHE DIES ALL THE SAME, WHY

AND EVERY TIME THEY CRASH, HE FEELS THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL PAIN AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN, WHY

I’M-- *ugly sobbing noises*

Apparently, not.

And this scene when he simply... closes his eyes before she dies again...?

This is where this episode had me in endless tears. It got me the four times I watched it. I’m dead serious.

Okay, so, next the Ancient One appears to Stephen, explaining that Christine’s death is an Absolute Point in time. It cannot be changed. Stephen needs the accident to become the Sorcerer Supreme and defeat Dormammu.

And this is where Stephen starts his journey into darkness. “Nothing is impossible, you taught me that. I only require more power.” Disobeying the Ancient One, Stephen then travels in time, seeking the Library of Cagliostro. Now, if you’re not aware of that, Cagliostro was a sorcerer who studied time in comics, and later became Sise-Neg (there’s a recent post on this because of the new Defenders run). It’s funny to think that Sise-Neg also destroyed the world when he became a god, however he grew past his pettiness and remade reality. Stephen did not possess such power, as we’re about to see.

PS: “Stop torturing yourself, Stephen.” Naur but he should use this line like a mantra. Especially comics!Stephen.

Not gonna lie, tho. This place reminds me of the Temple of the Vishanti from T&T (of course I was going to insert T&T somewhere, it’s me).

And of course they’d go for a pun with his name haha. I don’t know how to feel about this, tho. I feel like the episode is too heavy and dark for comedy. But it is what it is.

Okay but why some books are in cages??????????? And wow, it seems Cagliostro also gathered knowledge about several fields of magic.

And then Stephen learns that, in order to break an Absolute Point, he needs to absorb more power. This is when I went “oh-oh, here we go”.

And for real, is this Shuma-Gorath? Why are they keeping his name a secret? Is this the same creature from the first episode with Captain Carter, right? RIGHT? It has to be Shuma-Gorath.

Of course he tries to be polite and ends up all hurt haha. O’Bengh warns him about love but he will not listen. “Love can break more than your heart. It can shatter your mind.”/ “Is she worth the pain?”. Please, this is Stephen. He eats pain for breakfast.

Also, also, let’s take a break. We’re finally going to get monsterf0cker tentacle-lover Stephen Strange. It will cost us everything but here we goooooooooooo (yes, I went frame by frame for your more obscure fanservice needs)

Gods, I love this sequence so much it hurts. Okay, here we go.

Fanservice. Fanservice everywhere. (low-key the reason I also waited to write this review, I wanted to enjoy this part so badly but I was too sad for that lmao)

Okay so. O’Bengh is suddenly OLD and DYING, until we realize that Stephen spent CENTURIES absorbing mystic beings. CENTURIES. WTF STEPHEN. He had nothing in mind but the goal to save Christine. And people wonder why he went insane???? I’m sorry, O’Bengh, but I can’t take you serious when you still call Stephen Sorcerer Armani. Oh, and also because you watched him absorb beings for centuries in silence lmao. But I guess I have to because you said that Stephen is split in two since the Ancient One cast a spell on him, splitting the timelines and making them exist in the same reality before he could travel back in time. I know, it’s complex. Anything for the plot.

And now good!Stephen has an evil!twin who wants to absorb him back in order to become whole and break the Absolute Point. Cool.

I said I wanted to talk more about Wong because I think people are not talking about him enough. Wong is so important in this episode. He’s the one who’s trying to heal Stephen after Christine. He’s Stephen’s anchor.

Also, THEY FINALLY USED A SPELL WITH THE NAME OF THE VISHANTI. HOORAAAAY

So, for the sake of our understanding, I’m addressing the characters as evil and good!Stephen. Let’s go. Evil!Stephen summons good!Stephen and gods, he still holds such a strong grasp on me... unbelievable. THE DEEPER VOICE BENEDICT USES???? PLEASE, DIDN’T WE HAVE ENOUGH?

Imagine his strength to hold so many beings inside him, fighting to control him. BRO, THIS IS TOO TOO MUCH

Fine, I’ll not post SS about the fight because I’d be here all night long but I WILL say this: NOT CLOAKIE!!!!! NAAAAAAAAAAUR

Also if you ask me if I recognize any of the spells? Maaaaybe the Flames of Faltine, the not-so-crimson Bands of Cyttorak and a little trick Magik does with her portals. That’s how far I go.

I’ll not comment on the “seducing yourself to stay in the trap”. I will not. I’ll just say that the first person Stephen thought of when “Christine” was talking about the crème brûlée was Wong. That’s it.

And finally evil!Stephen absorbs good!Stephen and releases... UNLIMITED POWER (I love when the stone goes red as if it was bleeding aaaaaaa)

And when Stephen says her name and the other monsters’ voices echo “Christine”, AAAAAACKKKK

AND OF COURSE CHRISTINE WOULD FREAK OUT, BRO. LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE BECOME BECAUSE OF YOUR TWISTED LOVE. I’M NOT DOING FINE.

Oh, but it’s too late anyways because Stephen broke reality haha. This scene is interesting because Stephen is the only one who sensed and/or talked to the Watcher until now. I read an interview that the Watcher kinda showed up but it’s also about Stephen’s keen senses. Bit of both, let’s say. Still, man, 616-Watcher is not that cold. 616-Watcher would watch this and say “how about I intervene anyway?”. WhatIf!Watcher is brutal.

The way Christine looks at Stephen one last time also KILLS ME, DESTROYS ME, BREAK ME INTO A MILLION PIECES.

And this is where my soul left my body.

This is how they end the episode. This is how you leave me speechless and with teary eyes. This is how you give me a whole existential crisis.

This... this was brutal to watch. Really.

What can I say after this? I’m used to reading painful things when it comes to Stephen. Aaron’s and Cates’ runs are heartbreaking on so many levels. Hickman’s New Avengers is not easier. Coincidentally, What If? Magik Became Sorcerer Supreme and The End. And now Death of Doctor Strange. And yet, after everything I’ve been through, I’d never expect to watch something so brilliant, so tragic, so heartbreaking and unexpected in the MCU. Never. This is top tier content and this is my favorite character with SO MANY LAYERS and SO MUCH UNDERSTANDING. I can’t put into words how meaningful this whole episode is to me, or how deep it touched my heart and soul.

I’ve been struggling to find the proper words since then, I still can’t. All I can add is, I cried for the 4th time now. This is too, too much, even for Stephen stans. Even for the ones who are used to pain, regardless of which media you’re into: comic books, live actions or animated movies. This is literally more than I can take and yet I’m so, so grateful. The voice acting, gods, how did Benedict manage to create a better Stephen than the one he’s literally playing in real life???????????? HOW

This episode really took the max potential Stephen had to offer as a character, added tons and tons of layers based on his grief, depression, arrogance and need to control everything and created a tragic masterpiece. In 7 years of being a Doctor Strange fan, I've never read or watch something that could go this deep into the character. The closest I can think of is Mr. Misery and the metaphor of Stephen's depression. This is a whole new level of respect and understanding. This is more than a love letter. This is peak maestry. It’s perfect, it’s heartbreaking, it’s... gods, I can’t.

Sorry for dragging you until this far. Before I wrap up this review, I just wanted to remind you all that Stephen will appear again, he will smile again, he will be surrounded by people again. So this is not the end. It was painful but be brave. We still have a few more steps to take.
