“Tasty,” Haruka blurted without realising as she ate the hoto served in an iron pot.
Packed with lots of vegetables, the dish was rich in flavour, alleviating the exhaustion from her body.
“You’re right,”
Sat across from her, Isshin narrowed his eyes and expressed his agreement.
“Good grief. Finally we can eat a proper meal,” grumbled Gotou who sat beside Isshin as he threw a piece of torimotsu into his mouth, before chugging an entire glass of non-alcoholic beer in one gulp.
Haruka fully understood the feelings of Gotou, to have said that.
Ever since they had arrived in Yamanashi, spiritual cases had kept on coming one after another that they hadn’t been able to eat well.
Even when they had been staying at the hotel, they had only eaten onigiri or sandwiches from the convenience store thanks to the case that had suddenly happened.
It was only when they were about to head home that they eventually visited a restaurant called Yasohachian along the Koshu Kaido road, and had the chance to eat hoto like this.
Feeling content, Haruka shifted her chopsticks, but when she turned to her side, she found Yakumo staring at the pot full of hoto with a sour expression.
His food remained the way they had been served, yet to be touched at all.
“You’re not eating?” asked Haruka.
Yakumo lifted his eyebrow. “Must be nice for all of you to be so carefree,” he said, sighing.
What could be making him so displeased?
“Hoto is essentially a home-cooked dish,” he said, crossing his arms.
“I know.”
“In that case, you should understand how unnatural this hoto is,“ Yakumo glanced at the pot.
“Unnatural in what way?”
“What kind of home-cooked dish would be served in small single-portion pots?”
“That’s…”
Having mentioned that, it was true. A typical household wouldn’t have any single-portion sized pots such as these.
“Hoto should’ve been cooked in a large pot, and then divided into bowls to be served. Serving it in a small iron pot like this is just for show,” said Yakumo blatantly.
“Don’t say unnecessary things. As long as it’s tasty, serving it in any container won’t make a difference.”
“Well, that’s not surprising. A bear with damaged taste buds such as Gotou-san will never understand,” Yakumo immediately replied.
“What did you say–?!”
Isshin calmed Gotou, whose blood began to boil, saying, “Enough, enough.”
“He may be giving all sorts of excuses, but Yakumo simply can’t handle hot food,” said Isshin, throwing a gaze full of smiles towards Yakumo.
What. So that’s how it is.
For Yakumo who was unable to eat hot food, iron pots were his natural enemy as they preserved the heat circulating within the food.
Despite all the arrogant talk, he merely couldn’t eat yet as the food was still hot.
“Can’t eat because of the heat? That’s cute of you,” Gotou said mockingly.
“No. This has nothing to do with heat. I’m talking about the culture surrounding food here.”
“In that case, go ahead and try eating,”
Gotou’s clapback made Yakumo frown and went silent.
How unusual for Yakumo to become like this, who normally would always get back at Gotou.
His figure seemed so adorable that Haruka laughed without realising.
Yakumo’s glare instantly landed at her.
“All of you are so noisy. Just eat already, no? Eat—” said Yakumo in annoyance, lifting up his chopsticks, but his movement stopped.
Haruka knew he was forcing himself.
“What’s wrong? You’re not eating?” said Gotou, riling him up to get back at Yakumo’s treatment of him thus far.
“I’m eating even without you telling me,” Yakumo glared at Gotou, picking up the thick hoto noodles with his chopsticks.
Gazing sharply at the steaming hot noodles for a moment, he made his resolve and put it into his mouth.
The next second—
He spat out the noodles.
While Yakumo hadn’t yelled that it was hot, he immediately drank a glass of water to finish, after which he opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue whilst panting. “Hah, hah.”
Clutching his stomach, Gotou laughed out loud.
Isshin grumbled, “This is all because you were being stubborn,” as he wiped the table that Yakumo dirtied.
For a while, Haruka was able to hold back, but it wasn’t long until she burst into laughter as well.
Yakumo glared at her.
Haruka cleared her throat and tried to suppress her laugh.
“Don’t eat directly out of the iron pot like that,” said Haruka, moving the hoto from Yakumo’s pot into a bowl.
Even so, Yakumo still didn’t touch the hoto.
“What now? You want Haruka-chan to blow on the food and feed it to you?” teased Gotou.
Haruka’s face burned from embarrassment. Blowing on them would be fine, but not with feeding.
Realising she was imagining the idea put Haruka at a loss on what face she should make, so she turned her face away.
Huh?
It was at that moment Haruka realised that at the inner part of the tatami room where they were dining, hung a parchment scroll with a piece of painting stuck on it.
She wouldn’t have cared if it was any ordinary painting, but that painting in particular really caught her attention.
“What is it?” asked Isshin.
“That painting—” said Haruka, pointing at the parchment scroll so that everyone’s gaze were all focused there.
Depicted there were two men standing with their backs against each other.
One of the men appeared to be a samurai; carrying a sword on his waist while wearing a stern expression on his face.
The other person was a man clad in white kimono, holding a kongozue, his head lowered with a hint of sadness on his face.
And—
The man in the white kimono had eyes as red as blood.
Perhaps he was the same man that was in the painting they had seen in the sake factory.
“A curious painting, isn’t it?” said the middle-aged restaurant owner, who came to bring some tea.
“Ah, yes.”
“That painting has been handed down for generations. The samurai person’s name was Naitou Hayato. Well, he’s more known as Hijikata Toshizou of Shinsengumi.”
Haruka was stunned at the unexpected mention of a historical figure. “Hijikata Toshizou came to this place before?”
Yakumo sighed in disbelief. “You know nothing, do you.”
“My bad.”
“After the Battle of Toba—Fushimi, Shinsengumi was renamed as the Kouyou Chinbutai, and fought against the Imperial forces in Katsunuma.”
“I see...”
Haruka had no idea.
“According to the legend that was passed down, on his way to Katsunuma, Hijikata Toshizou visited our restaurant. This painting was painted at that time,” the restaurant owner said proudly while serving the tea before leaving.
This trip to Yamanashi had all started because of the painting of the man wearing a white kimono with two red eyes. Haruka never would have guessed that they would encounter a different painting depicting the same person.
Furthermore, he had been painted alongside Hijikata Toshizou, a notable person in history.
This felt like it was fated.
If the person in white kimono had been Yakumo’s ancestor, that would mean Yakumo had some connection to Hijikata Toshizou.
Thinking about it brought Haruka into a sense of wonder.
“How remarkably interesting. Perhaps we could find out more if we look into it in more detail,” said Isshin.
Gotou made a blatantly displeased look.
“Don’t be joking. We’re all the way here and you still want to go around?”
“Well, that’s true. Why don’t we go again next time to look into it?”
Haruka agreed with Isshin’s suggestion.
It would be interesting to come again next time to look into the man in white kimono that might have been Yakumo’s ancestor, with no spiritual case involved.
“Hey, Yakumo-kun. Let’s look into it,” said Haruka, hoping for Yakumo’s approval, but Yakumo responded with a sullen expression.
“That’s not necessary.”
“Why?”
“I don’t care who that person is. Just that…”
“What?”
“Despite living in a more difficult time than today, he accepted his fate nonetheless. Knowing that alone is enough for me.”
Yakumo’s words touched Haruka’s heart.
Based on what they had heard in the sake factory, this man had been a purification expert. He wouldn’t have been able to do it if he hadn’t accepted his own fate.
From Yakumo’s perspective, who had been suffering because of his red left eye, simply knowing that fact could become a support for him.
“Right—” Haruka nodded lightly.
“Well, looking into it or not, I’d like to come here without any spiritual case,” Isshin said cheerfully to wash away the gloomy atmosphere.
“You’re right,” Haruka replied with a smile.
As their trip this time had been overtaken by spiritual cases, even now she hadn’t really felt like she had come to Yamanashi. Next time, she should come without such matters weighing her down and take her time in doing so.
Surely it’ll be fun—thought Haruka, wallowing in emotion as she looked out the window.
The sight of Mount Fuji accompanied by the setting sun signified the end of their trip.

Enzan area in Koshu-city: short trip for beer and wine-tourism
Short trip to Yamanashi, for beer and wine.
ビールとワインを楽しみに、山梨へ小旅行。
午後休からの、お寿司からの、かいじで山梨の方に。 今回は、友人がやっているブルワリーにお邪魔するのが大目的。
東京駅から颯爽とかいじに乗って、1時間半の小旅行。
ちょっと遅めのお昼でたらふくお寿司を食べたので、軽くワインとつまみを買って乗り込みます。(でも結局、1時間半ダラダラしてたらすぐついた)
今回の旅の目的は、ブルワリーに行くことなので、宿のチョイスはとにかく「値段」。寝れればいい、ということで、お安い素泊まりの宿をチョイス。かなり「田舎のおばあちゃんち」感と「合宿所感」があるお部屋でしたw
ゴロゴロして、ちょっとつまみを食べて、やっぱりお腹が空いたので、てくてく山道をローソンまで行ったり。
ダラダラしてからそのまま寝たので、翌日朝に露天風呂を満喫。
大浴場の方はちょっと事情があってやめておいて、鍵をかけて家族風呂として楽しめるほうにお邪魔したんだけど、たっぷりのお湯と深めのお風呂、さらにジェットつき。湯質もアルカリ系でお肌すべすべになるタイプで、夜のうちにも入っておけばよかったなあとちょっと後悔。
お部屋は昭和感満載でしたが、お風呂がとっても良かったので、評価が高い理由もよくわかりました。
さてさて、ここからが旅のメイン。お迎えに来ていただき、早速向かいます。
■ 98BEERs
塩山から山の方へ、坂をぐんぐん登った先にあるのがこちら。
あいにくの雨だ��らこそ、霧がかった山中に佇む「天空のロッジ」。
昨年9月にオープンしたブルワリー「98BEERs」さんです。
タンクが並んでいるところ、壮観だね。
メインバーがこちら。
左にロビー、右には醸造所が上から望めます。
全てのアイテムがおしゃれで、素晴らしい空気感。 床にしつらえられたタイルも素晴らしい。
入口にあるバーは、このブルワリーで作ったビールが楽しめるタップルーム。
定番の4種類と、限定の2種類の計6種類がラインナップ。 私はまずは、全てちょっとずつ楽しめる6種のフライトをいただきます。
ちょっとゆっくり滞在させていただく予定だったので、一気に6種ではなく、少しずつ出していただき、解説をもらいながらいただきます。
左がゴールデンエール、右がセゾン。
「容器内二次発酵」で「ドライホッピングをしない」スタイルをモットーにしているこちら、ゴールデンエールもホップの苦味は落ち着いていて、モルトの甘い香りがほんのり。セゾンのほうもそこまでドライには設計されておらず、さっぱりながらも味わい深い。作っている人の性格とセンスを感じる味わい。
お次はベルジャンレッドエール。色が美しい。しっかりした味わいとボディ感。
ベルジャンレッドエールにあ��せて、鳥のレバパテをいただきます。 パテ〜!パテ大好き〜〜!美味しい。
お次は限定のLEMON GOSE。私は一番これが好き。
ゴーゼは、ドイツの乳酸菌と塩を使ったビアスタイルで、酸味と塩味が特徴。
こちらのブルワリーのゴーゼは、伝統的な「ライプツィヒゴーゼ」というよりはモダンな「コンテンポラリーゴーゼ」のスタイルで、乳酸菌由来の酸味と独特の香りは乳酸モルトをつかってるだけなので控えめ。レモン果汁のクエン酸と、ヒマラヤ岩塩の塩みがバランスがよく、とっても大人な味わい。おいひ...
ボトルでも購入できるので、しっかり買ってきました。
「容器内二次発酵」ということで、きめ細やかな泡と炭酸がここちよい。お腹ぱんぱんにならないタイプ。
オリジナルグラスの底に加工がされているので、ぴちぴちと上がってくる炭酸がとってもかわいいです。
きれいやね...
一通り注文して、ここからは気に入ったものをどしどしおかわり。
いろいろ注いでいただきます。
レモンゴーゼ、ゴールデンエール、ベルジャンビターとスペイン豚の自家製ハム。ハムもサラダもマスタードも美味しい。
こちらのブルワリーは、宿泊施設も備えているので、ちょっとだけそちらも拝見させていただきました。
■ STAY366
ワインとビールが楽しめる宿、とっても素敵。
こちらがレセプション。特製のお香が焚かれているのでとってもいい匂い。
お部屋は3つ。「翠 SUI」「朱 AKE」「玄 GEN」の3部屋は、ブルワリーの定番ビールと合わせたイメージカラーがお部屋に名付けられています。
まずは一番広い「翠 SUI」のお部屋。
ベッドが3つ、広いテラス、まるいバスタブ。どの設えもかわいい...大きな窓からは醸造所が覗けます。
お次は「朱 AKE」のお部屋。
広くてふんわりなベッド、棚とかも全部かわいい。猫足のバスタブと、左側にはこちらも醸造所が見える。一番富士山ビューなお部屋だそう。
最後が「玄 GEN」のお部屋。
シック〜!!ここのお部屋が一番人気だそう。壁の黒がかっこいい。 こちらは森ビューで、落ち着いてステイできる暗さがいい。わたしも泊まるならこのお部屋がいいな〜!
チェックインから18:00までタップルームのフリーフロー、さらにワインとのペアリングディナー、最高の朝ごはん��ついて、お一人様45,000円のお宿です。いつか泊まってみたいなあ。
おみやげにビールを買って行く方も多いみたい。とっても素敵でした。
■ 98WINES
施設の方に送っていただき、少し下った先にあるワイナリー「98WINES」さんへ。
広いお庭があるレストラン+カフェバースペースのあるこちら。 こちらで作っている銘柄「穀 KOKU」をお試しいただきます。
一番���が「穀 KOKU」の甲州の白ワイン。その次がマスカット・ベリー・Aの赤ワイン。
ちょっとずつ出していただきました。
白の方は、少し苦味を感じながらもさっぱりしているタイプ。ぶどうの果汁感もありながらも、少し枝っぽいニュアンスがあって大人な味わい。 赤の方は、タンニン感が柔らかく、フルーティーな仕上がり。赤ワインが苦手な私でもスッキリ飲める味わい。とっても素敵なので、今回は赤の方をお土産に。
ということで、1泊2日の山梨旅は終了。お土産に信玄餅を買ったけど、帰宅路のかいじでは爆睡w
帰ってきてからもバタンキューでものすごい昼寝をかましましたw
今回、前泊は本当に翌日のブルワリー+ワイナリーに行くためだけの前泊だったので、宿にはなにも期待してなかったけど、露天風呂と湯質がすっごくよかったから、もっとお風呂満喫したかったなあ〜。次回の教訓にしよう。

OKITEYABURI / 富士桜高原麦酒(山梨) 香ばしいクローブの香りと飲んだ瞬間のジューシーさが意外な印象の、志賀高原とコラボしたビール。ヴァイツェン?なのか?でもドライで軽やかな印象だ。薫り高いが飲みやすい。後から見たらインディアペールヴァイツェンとのこと。ハイブリッドスタイルだ。

Wakatoshi Ushijima
He isn’t necessarily the type to drink very often -- which of course, is mandatory if one wants to maintain their peak physical health. But in the rare instances in which Wakatoshi decides to treat himself, he can most likely be found at an open bar with a small glass of whiskey, scotch, or bourbon. Surprisingly well dressed, clad in a purple dress shirt and black pants with slicked-back hair, he’s probably the first thing that catches everybody’s eye when they enter the establishment.
A lone man, seemingly waiting for a friend that will never arrive. He sits on a barstool, muscled frame hunched over an amber-filled glass. The watch that is strapped to his wrist gleams underneath an obscure light that casts its rays on the very spot that he is rested upon. The air around him is filled with peculiar reminiscence -- reminiscence of something that cannot be identified. At least, not identified by a bystander’s eye.
(In reality, he’s thinking about his next volleyball match, but what the heck, let a person dream.)
That far-off look in Wakatoshi’s eyes when he drinks doesn’t help his case, though.
Toru Oikawa
He is the most meticulous grape wine freak you will ever meet -- but I don’t mean that in a bad way. Oikawa’s the type of guy to swish the wine in his glass then smell it before he finally sips at it -- everything has to be perfect. He can be found in the same spot every Saturday around seven in the evening with a glass of his favorite Yamanashi wine, or a glass of equally delectable Cabernet Sauvignon White or Red. He enjoys his drink in a pair of dress shoes and long pants (the shirt’s sleeve length will change depending on the weather). He’s not afraid to strike up conversation with the bartenders, who are more amused than annoyed at him, which is probably the only reason why they haven’t grown tired of his incessant chatter.
Nevertheless, he’s one of the more prized bar patrons.
(The women bartenders manage to sneak in an extra ounce or two of wine for him to enjoy, but that’s their little secret.)
Bokuto Koutarou
Every time he hits up a local bar with friends, the staff and company already know they’re in for a party. Bokuto’s laughter always fills the room with a holy amount of joy, spurring even the most reclusive spirits to liven up a little. He normally goes for a casual outfit consisting of a tight shirt and jeans with a nice pair of sneakers -- the perfect compliment for his usual beer and peanuts.
Everybody loves him. The bartenders are ecstatic about his easy-to-complete orders, as well as the mood that he brings along with him. Customers in the building are all friends with the lively male, greeting him on the way in and never missing the chance to talk to him about the latest volleyball games.
And there are times in which the party calms down and Bokuto will order a margarita on the rocks, but hey, where’s the bad in being able to socialize a lot more freely without being swept away by the celebration?
Anyways, moral of the story is that wherever bar Bokuto visits, he always brings his spunk and vigor with him. He’s a people person, after all.
Atsumu Miya
Going to the bar with his brother and a few close friends is probably one of the best pasttimes that he can reflect on. He doesn’t immediately draw attention when entering the establishment, clad in casually formal wear, but seems to garner more attention when the bartenders serve him his beverage choice.
He’s probably the only man in the Inarizaki squad who doesn’t fool around with his alcohol. Though he may seem like the mischievous type that likes to down shot after shot of vodka, it’s actually quite the opposite.
Instead of becoming invested in foreign or fancily sweet liquor, Atsumu Miya enjoys traditional sake out of small, flat dishes.
It’s surprising to any onlooker when they first lock onto him. Judging by the bleached hair and the clear accent, many would think that having a clear preference for specific types of rice wine would be a necessity to him, but it is.
He will legitimately spit out sake that he doesn’t find appetizing, scrunching up his face until the bridge of his nose has just become a lump of skin, a soured expression spreading across his features at every waking moment that the lingering taste of bitterness perfumes his senses.
He’s not as snobby as Oikawa when it comes to drinks, but he’s a very close second.
Yuuji Terushima
Did someone say dance until you drop?
Terushima frequently stops by clubs and orders shots most of the time, but never buys for friends (he doesn’t like favors). He wears loose-fitting clothing, mostly for the purpose of rocking his body to the “untz-untz” beat that thrums through the building. It’s annoying, in his opinion, but he just can’t get enough of that stupid high.
Most of the patrons of the club favor beer, which is fine in his book, but for the elusive bourbon and wine snobs, Yuuji never fails to take a piss at them. He wholeheartedly prefers his old pals, vodka and tequila, as they “go with the mood more.” Outside the club, Terushima never drinks. This is probably why the alcohols he downs in the club are his favorites -- he’s never really tried anything else.
When he was just starting out his drinking journey, he often did keg stands, but found that throwing up for an hour after isn’t the best feeling in the world.
But luckily enough, his acid reflux was just due to being upside down for more than seven minutes -- he’s fine with keeping shots down normally.

A collaboration between the Pacific Ocean, Cascade Brewing and Far Yeast Brewing release Kagua Sour

(PORTLAND, Ore. –– March 5, 2020) –– Cascade Brewing, a pioneer of the sour beer renaissance, is set to release Kagua Sour, a collaboration with Far Yeast Brewing Co. of Yamanashi, Japan. The beer will be available in 500ml bottles and on draft at both Cascade Brewing two pubs in Portland and through limited distribution starting Friday, March 13. The brewery is hosting a special release event at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House at 939 SE Belmont St. that evening beginning at 6 p.m.
Kagua Sour is a sour beer interpretation of Far Yeast Brewing Co.’s award-winning Kagua Rouge. Featuring a blend of red ales aged in red wine barrels with Japanese sansho pepper and yuzu peel, Kagua Sour offers complex notes of fresh citrus, spicy green peppercorn and roasted red malt. Richard Leglise, a Cascade alum who now works for Far Yeast Brewing, will be in attendance. The release party will also serve Far Yeast Brewing’s award-winning Kagua Rogue, a Japanese-inspired ale brewed in Belgium that features notes of spicy sansho, roasted malt and hops, with a slightly bitter yet creamy finish.
The event will also feature a live barrel tapping at 6 p.m. and offer two special food pairings that complement the sour beer. Chicken Karaage is a Japanese style fried chicken featuring marinated chicken thigh pieces dredged in seasoned flour and potato starch then fried golden in peanut oil and served with honey kewpie dipping sauce. The kitchen will also be offering a Japanese style pickled vegetable small plate featuring carrots, cucumbers, daikon radish and cabbage, all brined in a sweet/salty rice vinegar mixture and topped with toasted black sesame seeds.

White thin and muddy appearance. About fragrance… The fragrance is calm, but it feels like a refreshing grapefruit-like citrus fruit scent, besides melon-like fruit incense, scent like superb new powder. About taste... The mouth feel is light, the sweetness is mellow, rounded acidity, discreet bitterness, delicious light sake that is light overall. A few tasty beers and snacks as of late: - The full six pack of @karuizawa_brewery beer including the Dark, Alt, Waterfall, Clear, Weiss, and the Karuizawa Ale. Within these Nagano beers, Waterfall was definitely the real stand out. The malty blonde wheat was a delight. - Estrella Damm from Spain, picked up at @setouchisyuhan, is a light pilsner lager that I recommend drinking a very spicy fish dish. It's a nice palate cleanser. - @coedobrewery Ruri Pils is so crisp and a little sweet with orange peel notes and a nice balanced hop mix. Deeeeecent - Voll-damm Märzenbier from Barcelona is a very strong pale lager with major caramel notes. Best drank in winter when you need a sweet punch. - @faryeastbrewing Tokyo IPA (thx @a_z_ele !) From Yamanashi is a Belgian-Style IPA with mad citrusy hop vibes. Yuru Camp△ – 07 – Good Neighbors
The identity of Cool Campin’ Gramps is quickly revealed: he’s Rin’s grandfather, which makes sense as Rin must’ve caught the camping bug from him. It also explains why Rin has a loop-style tent rather than the commercially ubiquitous sleeve-style; we learn it’s a hand-me-down from her gramps. As for camping, she’s been doing it since her first year of middle school.
Rin and Nadeshiko have the lakeside to themselves but for one other couple: a friendly young lad (or possibly lass) with a wealth of fancy cooking gear and a woman in a hoodie surrounded by cans of beer and flanked by twin bottles of rum. While walking around to take some photos, Nadeshiko introduces herself but doesn’t pry too much, assuming they’re a couple couple and repsecting their privacy.
Nadeshiko returns to find Rin surrounded by a dark miasma—she’s used all of her firestarter but has no fire to show for it. Turns out starting her new grill isn’t as easy as the videos indicated. Nadeshiko immediately proves her value and asks the lad she met earlier to help them out. He lends them a couple instant-light briquettes to get the more fussy Binchoutan coals going.
They thank their camping neighbor and start cooking immediately, starting with grilled skewers and haddock hot pot. We learn from their conversation that the woman accompanying the lad is his older sister, who will soon start work as a high school teacher. If it’s at Rin and Nadeshiko’s school, I can see her ending up the Outclub’s faculty advisor…she’s certainly got Laid-Back down!
As thanks for helping them start their fire, the girls head back to their neighbors to offer some of their completed food, and the lad in turn offers some of his jambalaya, as too much was made for just two. The older sister offers rum, but her brother asks them to ignore her. They’re both pleasantly surprised by the high schoolers cooking skills.
After stuffing themselves on skewers, kalbi, and Hamburg steak, Rin uses the still-glowing coals to start a little wood fire to warm their bones before bed. Rin then learns Nadeshiko is originally from a town near Hamamatsu, where she had a view of Fuji-san, but he was tiny. The day they moved to Yamanashi, she fells asleep in the car and missed a much closer view, which is why she biked up to the campground where she and Rin met.
Now we know that were it not for Nadeshiko’s nodding off, they wouldn’t have met at Lake Motosu and had that lovely first taste of camping together that they’re now fully realizing. The hour grows late, and Rin starts nodding off first, so she heads into her tent, refusing to let Nadeshiko sleep with her as it would be too crowded. I dunno…it looks pretty roomy in there!
After sharing some face lotion with Nadeshiko, knowing from experience what campfire dries out the skin, Rin turns in, but thanks Nadeshiko through the tent for inviting her to go camping. Next time, she���ll be the one to invite her.
Rin wakes up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and is rewarded with a gorgeous and serene view of the lake at night. All of Nadeshiko’s talk about the bull oni that sometimes appears on the lake causes Rin to mistake the drunk, vomiting sister for the oni, causing her to freak out and book it back to the campsite.
And so, even though Rin wouldn’t let Nadeshiko sleep in her tent, a spooked Rin ends up slipping into Nadeshiko’s. The next morning, Nadeshiko wakes up first, notices Rin is there, and rolls herself over so they’re closer together, in what could be the cutest moment of the show to date. Once they’re both up and ready to break camp, Rin elects to go back the way they came, while Nadeshiko rents a boat to get to the other side. To each their own!
Talk of bull oni aside, this was a particularly laid-back and relaxing Yuru Camp. Other than the brief scene with Rin’s mom and granddad it’s just Rin and Nadeshiko plus their amenable camping neighbors. With their chemistry, there was never any doubt that Rin and Nadeshiko would make great camping companions. I also tend to agree with Rin that while all camping locations have their charms, there’s no substitute for the unique coziness of a wooded lakeside.

トロピカルピルスナー / 富士桜高原麦酒(山梨) ピルスナーモルトの薫り高い、ジューシーなフレーバーの漂うピルスナー。フレーバーにかなり強いトロピカルな香りがある。ボディはABV5.0%というほど軽くは感じない。苦味は弱く、モルトの甘さが前面にある印象。富士桜のピルスナーそのものを余り飲んだことがないので比較は難しいが、ツヤツヤな感じより甘味の方が強く感じるかも?

Kofu Beer Festival and New Friends
Today I made the effort to go to the Kofu Beer Festival with some people. This was not as straight forward as it may seem as I have no way of contacting the outside world when I’m not at school yet (currently holed up in my nearest Starbucks). Normally I’m not a beer person but it was an opportunity to meet new people and after some conferring with T-sensei we worked out which bus to take and how to get there!
First thing to understand about Yamanashi, despite popular belief, public transport is not always on time. The bus was late. Then I just tried to out-gaijin1 myself but firstly trying to get on at the wrong door, not taking a ticket and not knowing how to pay. Luckily there was a lovely girl who spoke excellent English who was kind enough to help this gaijin out. When I was finally united at Kofu Station with my YETI2 colleagues, it was revealed that she was a student of one of the other JETs! Bizarrely I was then asked for a photo which to which I happily obliged.
Thus, I met my new friends! J was there as a familiar face but new ones were introduced such as R and T, a lovely Canadian couple. After explaining my plight of the no internets, R kindly offered to collect me on his bicycle tomorrow and show me how to get around Kofu which I gladly accepted. Another girl, B, offered to go yukata shopping with me on Monday before the festival so I can fulfil my dream of going to a real Japanese summer festival appropriately dressed! I met a lot of interesting and lovely people today and have a lot to look forward to in the coming week!
