Fuji to Hood at Culmination Brewing Company
Press Release
PORTLAND, Ore. … Japanese and Portland collaboration beer festival Fuji to Hood returns to northeast Portland’s Culmination Brewing on Saturday, April 25th, 2020. Tickets are on-sale now for this one-of-a-kind event that will feature 17 collaboration beers, 1 collab cider and 1 collab kombucha. Each craft fermentation team has been tasked with using atleast one Japanese ingredient in their collaborations. Fuji to Hood will also feature Japanese food vendors, sake, DJ’s and more in an expanded outdoor tented space at 2117 NE Oregon St, Portland, OR 97232 from noon - 6pm.
Fuji to Hood promotes industry, cultural, and interpersonal exchange between Oregon and Japan, by exclusively featuring beverages made in collaboration between craftspeople from both regions. Participants spend months jointly planning their beers, ciders, and kombucha, and personally attend the event to share their creations with festival attendees. As in 2018, Culmination Brewing will host this event in front of their taproom, with a VIP session from 11AM to 12PM, and a general admission session from 12PM to 6PM.
Fuji to Hood was first held in Portland in 2018 with 10 brewery collabs and 1 cider collab. The following year the fest jumped to Japan for Hood to Fuji and expanded to 17 collaborations with Oregon brewers making the trip for the event in June. In 2020 Fuji to Hood returns to Portland with 18 collaborations made in Oregon with the Japanese brewers traveling out to attend the festival.
Japanese ingredients expected in this year’s beer and cider menu include a number of citrus fruits, persimmons, koji rice, matcha green tea, peppercorns, dried plums, and even shiitake mushrooms. As an extra offering at Fuji to Hood, an Oregon-Japan collaborative kombucha will also be served.
Collaboration teams include the following well-known breweries, cideries, and kombucha makers from Oregon and Japan:
Boneyard + Heiwa Craft
Breakside + Ise Kadoya
Brew Dr. Kombucha + KOMBUCHA SHIP
Cascade + RISE & WIN
Culmination + Nara Brewing
Ecliptic + Y.MARKET
Ex Novo + Shiga Kogen
Fort George + Black Tide
Gigantic + North Island
Great Notion + Son of the Smith
Hair of the Dog + Yokosuka Beer
Level + Repubrew
Little Beast + Harvest Moon
Modern Times + Minoh Beer
New Hokkaido + Far Yeast
Reverend Nat’s + Hitachino Nest
Ruse + Spring Valley
Upright + Fujisakura Kogen
Von Ebert + Shonan Beer
Free tastings of saké from Oregon’s SakeOne will be available, and vendors will sell Japanese food to accompany the fantastic beverage selection. Fuji to Hood ticket packages will be available for purchase on-line at www.fujitohood.com. The 2018 event sold out, so it is highly recommended to make ticket purchases in advance. Each ticket can be exchanged for a 4 oz. pour of a beverage of choice. A number of ticketing options will be available:
VIP session 10-ticket package = $35
VIP session 20-ticket package = $50
General admission session 10 ticket-package = $25
General admission session 20 ticket-package = $40
Extra tickets = $2 each
Tickets available at https://fujitohood.com/tickets
The festival encourages responsible drinking and urges patrons to take Tri-Met or ride-sharing services. Attendees can take advantage of a special hotel promotion kindly offered by KEX Portland. Use of the promotion code “Fuji2Hood” will discount room rates by 10% for stays during the April 21 to April 29 timeframe.
In celebration of its dedication to fostering relations and exchange between Oregon and Japan, the Japan-America Society of Oregon (JASO) will receive a portion of festival ticket sales.

When you tell people you are visiting Nagano, they will ask you if you’re going to ski or snowboard. After you tell them you aren’t, there is a small chance they will ask if you are going to see the snow monkey park. Every time you see snow monkeys hanging out in hot springs set against a snowy backdrop, there’s a pretty good chance those photos came from Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park about an hour outside of Nagano.
Monkey Business
The park was founded by a Japanese gentleman who wanted to put aside land for the snow monkeys, who were losing habitat due to expansion of human activity. Now, the park is a second home to the snow monkeys. Outside the park itself, on the trail up, you can see signs that inform you of a snow monkey’s typical day: forage for food in the morning, come down to the hot spring during the day (where they are fed copious amounts of food), and then return to the mountains to sleep. They rarely sleep in the same spot twice and usually sleep in difficult to traverse areas, such as mountain faces, to deter predators from attacking them.
To get to the park, you need to take a bus from Nagano station (there are plenty of signs in English telling you where to go and the staff will help you out if you’re lost; the name in Japanese sounds just like the English, so fear not!). You can take a train and then a local bus, but the express bus is the way to go. Bonus tip: Get the Snow Monkey day pass. It will cover all of your travel expenses to and from, park admission, and then any additional transport you require in Nagano city for around 3000 yen per person. Once you get off the bus, express or local, you have a 30-minute walk to get to the park. It’s a bit steep at first, but levels out after the first .4 kilometers (first quarter mile). The walk out in winter is beautiful: rushing rivers, perfectly powdered tree branches, and the occasional peeking of the sun through the clouds.
A little guy picking up some food from the snow.
A shot from the bottom of the first set of stairs leading into the park.
Grooming
I think they come down to watch us, too!
The guy on the right was very relaxed.
Monkeying Around
When you enter the park, you go through a main building and then into the area where the monkeys play. You can see them warming up on water pipes, grooming in shallow pools, and soaking in the main spring well in the very back of the park. The sulphur smell is a bit intense, which took my by surprise when I first entered the spring area. The monkeys will run around, darting past you and lounging without many cares. The park gives you all the rules for friendly interactions with the monkeys, so as long as you follow the rules, you’ll have a great time. The humans you’ll be with will mostly be taking photos of the monkeys; large clusters of people lurk about to find that perfect monkey shot.
Bottoms up!
After you visit the park, don’t forget to stop into The Farmhouse, a small restaurant and craft beer establishment less than a minute from the bus stop. They have a tap room for Siga Kogen / Tamamura-Honten Brewery, a sake brewer that start crafting beers in the last 20 years or so. If you want to do a sake tasting, head into town to their small tasting room. Otherwise, get your beers here. My wife and I made the mistake of trying to visit the brewery in town, only to discover that The Farmhouse is the main taproom for the beers. They have great food and it’s a nice way to cap off the day before catching the bus back (make sure you line up early, or the bus may fill up and you’ll have to wait another hour for the next one).
Overall, if you like monkeys and watching them play around, this is the perfect spot for you. It’s a nice trip out there and a very unique experience with the local nature I don’t think you can get many other places. If you’re in Nagano, definitely give it a visit!
Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park When you tell people you are visiting Nagano, they will ask you if you're going to ski or snowboard.

Manimaniでのお料理。
【Think about food @ manimani】 GO SLOW, GO NATURAL. GO SLOW, GO NATURAL. The meal at our lodge is one of the things we are most particular about. Because we want to cherish freshness, we use locally produced ingredients. We want materials that we can trust, so we choose materials that show the faces of the producers. We don't need anything extra, so We’re going to examine the cooking method. All of them are thinking about how to get close to nature. We would like you to relax and enjoy the natural taste in an extraordinary space where time flows slowly, isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The seasoning is modest, and if we use a small amount of the finest seasoning. Everything on the menu at the lodge looks casual and homey. Seasoning is also modest. We don't do anything that looks fancy. From the point of view of a seasoned traveler, it lacks luxury and liveliness. . . It can be thought that. However, we are particular about the ingredients (vegetables, meat, etc.), the cooking method, and the seasonings (salt, soy sauce, miso, oil, etc.) used, and we do our best to ensure that everything is natural. We try to prepare and serve each dish with sincerity, so we often have to wait for a while. Please forgive us. A natural drink for a natural meal. The "natural look" is also perfect for the "wine" and "beer" that make your meal even richer. The wine list includes rare Japanese wines from Obuse Winery, located in Shiga Kogen, as well as natural wines from France, Italy, Spain, and other countries. For beer, we offer Shiga Kogen Beer, the leader of the craft beer world, and especially rare brands that are released on a limited basis in a timely manner. We will continue to stick to “food experiences that can only be found here”

Skiing In Japan- Carmen & Hikari’s Adventure
Be prepared for too much information and even more photos
Carmen flew in on the day flight from Brisbane to Narita. To get from Narita to my hotel [Pearl Hotel Kayabacho], Carmen took the Keisei Ueno Train-SkyLiner not to be confused with the Narita Express!
Hikari took the Access Narita Bus from Narita to Tokyo Station.
The buses come every 10 minutes and it takes about 1 hour to get to Tokyo Station, very easy! The price is 1,000yen :)
Day 0: 25 Feb
Tiny room but perfect for a 1 night stay, easy to take a taxi from station to hotel and then hotel to station in the morning to catch the train
Day 1: 26 Feb
At around 7:00am we met the Famil Group which composed of a member from the Flight Centre Group, Buffalo Tours, Contiki, etc. All in all there would less than 10 of us including the group leaders.
We caught the bullet train from Tokyo Station to Nagano Station
^the above photo, Hakutaka 553 is the recommended rail for when from Australia overnight on Qantas or ANA--this train can go all the way to Iiyama as well. From Iiyama you can go to Nozawa Onsen and Madarao Kogen.
We arrived at Nagano and went straight to the Zenkoji Temple. It is not walking distance from the station so I would catch a taxi.
Trying Oyaki which is a traditional fried food of Nagano. It is made of flour & vegetables and is quite healthy...mainly because it is a vegetarian dish [Carmen tried Marunasu or Eggplant and Hikari had Nozawana] Other types offered were Kinoko-mix/Mushrooms, Kabocha/Pumpkin, Yasai-Mix/Radish & Cabbage, and Tsubaru/Red Bean Jam
Another attraction in Nagano is Matsumoto Castle and the Daio Wasabi Farm.
Say hi Iku!
from the temple, we went to the Jigokudani Monkey Park by tour bus.
From where the bus drops us off, we had to walk about 25 mins..
go back to the town and had a lunch which is close to the entrance of the park [Enza Cafe]
then we moved to Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel. It takes a little over an hour to drive from Nagano to Shiga Kogen.
http://www.princehotels.com/shiga/
The view of a grand natural spectacle from 2,000 meters above sea level that spreads out before you, and snow quality that you won’t forget. We are a snow resort that can cater to every need of the skier. The three Prince Hotels await your arrival at the foot of Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama Ski Area, where, starting with the Olympic Course opened when the 1998 Winter Olympics were held, a variety of courses let you enjoy skiing to the full. The East Building, where the spacious rooms all look out over the ski slopes. The South Building, with its casual atmosphere is where you can board a gondola direct from the hotel. The West Building, a reasonably-priced wing where self-service is the order of the day and families or groups can kick back and relax.”
West Building
The West Building offers reasonably prices accommodation with a self-service slant. There are rooms where your family or friends can take it easy and relax, as well as a number of facilities to help you enjoy your après-ski time.East Building The East Building, in an ideal location width every room a view of the ski slopes, features attentive service and an elegant atmosphere. Spend time relaxing here as you can only at a Prince Hotel.South Building The South Building, with its casual atmosphere, is perfect for active skiers and snowboarders. From the building, you can directly take the No. 2 Gondola.
finishes off day 1!
Now to day 2: 27 Feb
Alllllllll skiing in SHIGA KOGEN <3 YEW, we did not end up going to Gunnma & doing the Kusatsu Onsen. But we did go out for beers at the end of a long hard day ;)

~Last night in Shiga..~
went to beer bar “TEPPA” in the Hotel Chalet Shiga. We were unable to view the rooms so I am unable to recommend this property for your stay in Shiga.
There are not many places for night out in Shiga Kogen, but this place is perfect to enjoy night out ;) You can enjoy Shiga Kogen original beer!
Day 3: 28 Feb
We got to the peak of Mt. Yokote!! and had a coffee at ‘Crumpet Cafe’. This is accessible via the lifts--great for photo taking!
We had lunch at Kamoshika Ethnic Beer House for Indian Curry before departing on to Nozawa Onsen...be ready for lots of Nozawa properties. We went from Shiga Kogen to Nagano and then Nagano to Nozawa Onsen which I DO NOT RECOMMEND. Definitely take a direct transfer from Shiga to Nozawa...it actually makes no sense to do it the way we did.
Nozawa is such a compact village and so easy to get around. The majority of restaurants/bars/hotels are within walking distance of each other
Of course the mountain base area has wide and gentle terrain that is suited to children who are skiing or snowboarding for the first time. Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort has three main entrances: the Hikage Trail, which is accessible from the spa town via Yu-road; the Nagasaka Trail, which is easily accessible by car from the new parking lot; and the Karasawa Trail, which has both medium and gentle terrains.
If you need a rest, you can take a break in the rest houses that are adjacent to each trail.
Additionally, a free rest station for kids called the "Naski Room" has been opened on the 2nd floor of the Hikage Trail Information Center.
