This is cribbing from my longass reply to that ask I got a week ago about technology levels in Sorneith but - I am honestly surprised and thrilled that we got a TV vista given how staff keeps saying that Sorneith is at 1920s technology levels. Technically television existed in the 20s but it was pretty crude and definitely not widespread. I guess time is moving on!

In my lore at least television mostly isn't a thing - infrastructure in Sorneith is spotty at best due to a lack of interflight cooperation + lack of intraflight coordination + generally hostile geology where anything that isn't supervised constantly is prone to getting hit by lightning or set aflame by a volcano or stomped by Luminax. Even radio coverage can be unreliable in a lot of areas, and it's common for stations to be run by individuals or small groups with no real oversight or coordination. The SSMC has a broadcast wing with stations in Fire, Lightning, and Ice and they are constantly dealing with yahoos trying to bust in on their frequencies.

Where it does exist, it's used as a tool for public announcements and government news. Monitors are set up in public places and you have to go out to see the broadcast. Only very wealthy or very important dragons would have their own sets. This mostly happens in Arcane territory, which is relatively urbanized/has a semi-functional central government, as well as having high levels of ambient magic to power everything. It is exclusively cable, however - that high magic level also causes crazy interference with any kind of broadcast. Part of the reason they have this system is because local radio gets really messed up.

Which is to say, dragon TV shows are either like "Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Take Cover" or CSPAN (OculusSPAN?). Not that exciting, unfortunately.

Yugo Kochi (29) from the six-member group SixTONES appeared as a studio guest on NTV's special programme 'Bird Man Contest 2023' (Aug 30, 7pm). He watched the romantic flight over Lake Biwa live. We also asked him about their flight as a group and his thoughts on his last year in his twenties.

This year marked the 45th anniversary of this major summer event and we cheered from a special studio by the lake. It was, of course, the first time he had seen the event live. Watching his friends pray from the platform, he said: "It's a very human documentary. I realised that a four-metre headwind is tough. It was a luxury to be able to enjoy it again on air".

He even visited the platform from which the plane took off. Although his name '髙地' means 'highland', he said: "When I see how high it is, I wouldn't dare to run down 10 metres in a glider by myself. I prefer low ground," he said with a wry smile.

Watching the flight of the 28 teams in the Human Powered Propeller Aircraft category, he was impressed by the division of labour in designing, directing and supporting the pilots in their training. The team's performance was also supported by the lighting crew, the choreographer and others, without whom we could not create a single piece of work. That's why we cry when we succeed and feel frustrated when we fail.

When asked if he would form a SixTONES flying team, he replied: "I would be the leader of the cheering squad. I am the leader of the cheering squad! I don't want to be involved in the design (laughs). The pilot could be Tanaka, who is surprisingly agile. He's also light and has guts when he puts his mind to it," he fantasised.

The group took off on six wings in 2015. It also experienced headwinds. "We were said to be in a fierce junior battleground with Snow Man and Travis Japan, who are now doing well in their generation, and there were whispers that we might not be able to make our debut. But I didn't give up and that was a big part of it. I've got a tailwind too: I'm being challenged by a company with the latest technology." [E/N: I think he meant Sony 😭🙏🏻].

His debut came in the middle of the Corona disaster. "I couldn't do the location work properly and my TV time was short... When you jump before you fly, you have to bend your knees. If you look at it like it was time to bend your knees, it wasn't bad." He also sees the flow as a positive: 'I didn't get tired from being busy, I had a good slow start and was able to keep going without strain."　

Of course, the status quo cannot be maintained. "I have to carry more weapons on my back. It's important to sharpen the weapons in my backpack. I certainly don't want people to think I haven't changed since my debut." His appearance on the current show was also well received for his comments. It must have been stimulating.

He is the oldest member of the group and will be 30 next March. "I joke about it on the radio, but I'm thinking of keeping my age a secret when I turn 30 (laughs). I don't want to be limited by my age. If I don't force myself to look young and do my best to do my own thing, I think I will look young naturally. I don't say things like 'I'm already an old man' when I turn 30 (laughs). I want to greet my juniors cheerfully.” As his surname suggests, he is aiming high.

Studio Kitchen

A vast layout of eighteen kitchen islands, all equipped with plenty of workspace, a fridge, freezer, sink, hob, and oven. You will never be short of knives or rolling pins in this place, any tool or cutlery you may desire lives in a drawer or is hanging up somewhere easily accessible. 

The kitchen itself is state-of-the-art and stupidly expensive. Steel-top surfaces, modern stove tops and built-in oven and sink. There are wood accents to provide some contrast to the cold steel look of the kitchenware.

Studio Floor

The studio floor, aka, where all the cameras, sound, and broadcasting equipment can be found. It all seems to be remotely operated and tamper proof. The studio floor is the shadow to the bright lights of the kitchen. Void of people, except the occasional judge checking their cue cards. You never see the cameras switch off. 

Dressing Room

Pretty much just a glorified cloakroom with a tacky ‘Dress Room’ sign in the shape of a star glued to the door. White brick walls, bright white lights, cold concrete flooring. To the right, the walls are lined shelves and hooks with benches underneath them. Mirrors line the left side of the room with a counter underneath and chairs tucked under it. The very basics of TV make-up is provided. On the back wall, there are lockers for everyone, plus a door that leads to a couple of small but clean bathrooms.

Green Room

A lounge area just off the Studio Floor, meant to host the cast between shoots and challenges. Plush leather couches large enough to seat the entire cast (probably, might be a squeeze) with a TV playing Judge Judy reruns. Sometimes, it shows what Dish to the Death is actually airing.  Time to rewatch all your cringe fails! There’s also a balcony outside designated for smokers.

Craft Corner

Basically just a corner within the green room, where food for the contestants (that’s you!) is served. Little robots prepare a buffet filled with a variety of finger sandwiches, mini pizzas, salads, and fruit for all of you to enjoy. There is also some dining seating where you can enjoy your meals.

Cleaning Closet

Just a random closet. Random supplies for the set are stored here, including janitorial supplies, spare camera lens and wires, and strange props. Also a good place to have a private cry in.

The Control Room

A heavy, soundproof door that remains forever locked is all that you can see of the Master Control Room. It’s where you can assume all the footage is broadcasted from, but you’ve never seen anyone come in or out of it. Weird.

Effects Room

Peering into this room, you will see a green-screen set up. The entire set is green screen. The door has now been unlocked, and contestants are able to access everything it has to offer! Which is mostly just the green screen, the projector, and the small control panel that it’s hooked up to. As for what it’s meant to project, it doesn’t look like there are any film rolls or CD’s around. Weird.

Describe your hometown. What’s it like there? I grew up in a really safe, white, middle class country town lol. It was very pretty and had lots of nice landscaped parks and pedestrianised streets. I found it boring as a child but looking back there was a fair bit to do - we had a couple of cinemas, a bowling alley, a skating rink, bars and clubs and some decent shops and restaurants. It was a good place to raise kids but I’m glad I don’t live there as an adult.

What did you do yesterday evening? Absolutely nothing and it was heaven lol. We ordered chippy for tea and then just chilled on the sofa and watched movies. Are you comfortable with leaving the house without any makeup on? I can’t remember the last time I left the house WITH make-up on.

Do you have any expensive hobbies? Horse-riding - my lessons cost me £35 a week and then beach rides/hacks out are at least £90 a go as well, but my dad VERY kindly gave me money towards riding this year for my birthday so I don’t need to worry so much about the cost anymore.

What length do you like to keep your nails at? Short, otherwise they get caught on leads and stuff at work.

Have you ever felt physical pain in a dream? I don’t think so.

What is the oldest online account that you still use? Probably my Yahoo! e-mail address.

Have you ever had Christmas carolers come to your house and sing for you? Yeah, a few times when I was younger, but it doesn’t really seem to be a “thing” anymore, at least - not since COVID.

What was the last video game you beat? BeatStar - then they released an update for it which is really annoying and now I don’t really play it as much.

What’s something on your to-do list that never actually gets done? Finish decorating the bathroom. It’s been two years since we started it and we’re still not even halfway through hahah. It’s just expensive and a hassle as it’ll involve being without a shower for a few days too.

Have you ever been really passionate about something but then lost interest? If so, what was it? Yeah - reading, for sure. I used to read everyday and would get through several books a week, but then I ended up on medication that killed my concentration span and I just never got back into it. I do read on holiday (like, by a pool or something) but that’s about it. It’s not that I don’t still enjoy it, I just got out of the habit really.

Do you sleep with the TV or the radio on? Not on purpose, but I’ve fallen asleep in front of the TV more than once.

What’s the worst thing about being male/female (whichever you are)? Periods, the pressure to have children and do traditionally female things.

What movie has the best special effects? I don’t really pay attention to that kind of thing.

How many work hours per week is too much for you? I work about 30 hours and that’s fine for me, but I work outdoors in a physical job so it’s much more tiring than working indoors sitting down, lol. I’ve done 40 hour weeks in this job and it nearly killed me, I was so sore and tired hahah.

What habit is essential to your daily life? Getting at least an hour of peace and quiet to myself, every single day.

What is your favorite documentary? Anything by Louis Theroux or David Attenborough.

When did you last have a vision test? Years ago, ha. I’m way overdue an eye test but it’s SO expensive to get new glasses that I keep putting it off lol.

What do you typically eat for breakfast? Lately it’s been peanut butter and sliced banana on toast with a coffee and a glass of fruit juice. I go through phases of eating the same thing for weeks then I switch to something else lol.

What are three things you need to do tomorrow? Go to work, feed the animals, spend time with my mum.

The DMCA and You; or, why Tumblr won’t get sued over Post+

 I keep seeing people saying “doesn’t Tumblr understand they’re inviting an avalanche of lawsuits” and being baffled that people think this, and then I remembered that most of you were not both alive and in fandom in 1998 and therefore probably haven’t spent hours reading through the DMCA trying to figure out exactly how it was going to screw us. (Turns out we were right, but not nearly pessimistic enough.) So gather ‘round, children, it’s time for another bout of fandom history.

You have to understand what the internet looked like in 1998. Most people didn’t have internet access at home, and for those who did, you got a whopping 54 kbps (yes, that’s kilobytes per second) (compare that to 4G wireless, which 14 Mbps, not to mention, you know, wireless) unless you wanted to shell out for ISDN, which was twice the speed and five times the cost. Only 47% of American adults “went online” at all, never mind the two to six hours per day that current internet users are estimated to spend.

And I mean, why would you? There wasn’t that much there. If you wanted to post something online, your first and best option was to pay for web hosting of your own, or mooch off a friend’s. Or you could get a Geocities site, which would be plastered with ads and limited you to such a small amount of storage that you couldn’t have more than a couple dozen low-resolution images at best, or you could post on a message board (which would be essentially mooching off of a friend’s paid web hosting, because most sites that hosted message boards were just some guy who wanted to have a place to chat with his friends that wasn’t a Yahoo! email list), where you might get permission to post three or four images at a time. Music? Rude, takes up too much bandwidth, don’t do that to people. Video? You’re hilarious. (I once left my computer on for a week while I attempted to illegally download a copy of Velvet Goldmine but I finally gave up and got it from the video store instead.)

But still, at the time that was magic, and as more and more stuff found its way online, somebody who held a copyright somewhere (read: music studios and Disney) realized they had to get out in front of things. And into this brave new world came the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which was passed in 1998 and was already skewing the shape of the internet of the future when it came into effect in 2000.

It did a lot of dumb things but the one we’re concerned about is the “safe harbor” provision, which basically says that in the case of an online copyright infringement, there are three parties: the infringer, the copyright holder, and the internet host, and the host is not a part of the copyright dispute.

Prior to this, if Sony or Disney or whoever found an illegal copy of their intellectual property (read: an mp3 or an avi) online, they’d go after whoever owned the server it lived on. Which made sense! If you find stolen TVs in someone’s basement, you go after the guy who owns the basement, and “I didn’t know my deadbeat brother in law was stealing TVs” is something you’ll have to prove in a court of law.

But internet companies like Geocities and Yahoo! and anyone else who offered random users the chance to post things on the internet using a free account said wait a minute, this doesn’t make sense. Because the internet is not like a physical basement; we have no reason to see someone carrying stolen mp3s down the basement stairs, and the scale is such that we couldn’t see all of them if we tried (unless we banned all mp3s, which means goodbye, MySpace, and goodbye indie bands). You wouldn’t go after a landlord in New York because their tenant in New Jersey is stealing TVs, would you?

So the DMCA said fine, we understand that the internet as it currently exists, and as it is attempting to exist (remember this is still the height of the dot.com boom and people are making money hand over fist by just owning websites), can’t operate if we try to do this. So instead of letting big companies sue big companies over copyright law, we’ll let big companies sue individual humans over copyright violations. That’s much more fair.

Of course most of what resulted wasn’t lawsuits at all; it was individuals getting threatening letters from Sony and Disney promising them that they were planning to sue but if you, Joe User, will just delete the thing you posted from the internet, we’re willing to make this all go away. And people did, because fuck, who’s going to duke it out with Disney?

The DMCA is the reason tumblr exists in the first place (not to mention twitter, and facebook, and essentially the entire part of the internet that isn’t either an ad or a news website). Technically, if tumblr was responsible for copyright violations, they’re already a prime target for a lawsuit, because they’re running ads on a website where people post copyright violations on a daily basis. Adding the opportunity for you to make money off your copyright violations doesn’t make them any more liable than they already are, which is not at all.

So here’s what predict will happen with Post+ at the beginning: absolutely nothing. A few people will monetize gifsets or fanfiction or vids and no one will pay attention and no one will care. But some small creators, people who post original fiction, people who post craft patterns, people who post insightful analysis, will start using it as part of their actual revenue stream. Sooner or later someone will be making enough money that it pings someone’s radar, and sooner or later someone making money will slip up and post something that could plausibly be a copyright violation, and they won’t get sued. They’ll get a takedown notice, a threatening letter from whoever owns the thing they infringed upon (...so Disney), and they’ll pull the thing. But it’s hard to pull things from the internet, much harder than it used to be, and nearly impossible the way tumblr works. So they get another takedown notice. Or Disney’s lawyers go through their blog with a fine-toothed comb and they start getting more and more unreasonable takedown notices, but now they’re scared and fuck, who’s going to duke it out with Disney? So they take their blog down entirely, and now that person is a little bit poorer and Disney is out the cost of four or five stamps and envelopes and the time their lawyer spent fifteen years ago drafting the takedown notice template.

I guarantee you that the people who decided to implement this know that this is going to happen, and they do not care. We’ve reached the “we could make this website work if we could just get rid of fandom” stage, which never ends well for the website but they never seem to learn that. So please, please don’t try to monetize fandom content on the assumption that tumblr is going to be the one to get slapped with a lawsuit for it, that’s just not how it works. It never has been and it never will be.
