A Dumb Draft Exercise
It's a Friday night and we're all locked in so I decided to do something a touch different. I took the current NFL draft order and then looked up the last five NFL drafts (2015-2019) to see who was picked at spots. Using the teams as they stand after one long (and it feels it) week of free agency, I picked ONE player selected at that set position to try and do a retro draft. Each team picked ONE player picked over the last five years at that specific spot (so at 1 overall, you could only draft 1st overall). How different would your favorite team look? Welll.....
1. Cincinnati- QB Kyler Murray (2019)
The first round picks of the past five years consist of four QBs (Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield and Murray) alongside premiere edge rusher Myles Garrett. As is often the case with top pick QBs tasked with saving bad franchises, each becomes less and less attractive as the years go by and they hit the ceiling of "damn good but not quite franchise saver" over and over. I went with Murray because while I think Goff is vastly underrated by most fans, Murray's got the ability and personality to drastically change an organization that feels like it's been hankering for a chance over the past five years. Murray was one of the NFL's brightest stars last year and figures to only improve, especially if you put him under the watchful gaze of an offensive guru (of sorts) in Zac Taylor.
2. Washington- DE Nick Bosa (2019)
Was REALLY torn with Carson Wentz and Nick Bosa for the Redskins. There's a lot of dead-ish weight here with Mitch Trubisky and Marcus Mariota and while Saquon may be the best player in theory, no team needs to take a running back in the top 5 (or in the first round at all). Assuming the Redskins are truly comfortable with Dwayne Haskins then taking Nick Bosa and pairing him up in the front four along with the likes of Montez Sweat, Matt Ionidis and Daron Payne would probably be a formidable ass crew. Basically the Chase Young strategy.
3. Detroit- DE Joey Bosa (2016)
How about the Bosa Bros going back to back! One would assume tht if the Lions wanted a QB, they're GOING to have their pick of the proverbial litter on the back end. After all after Cincy, they'll have Tua, Herbert and Love at their disposal if taking a QB so amuses them. Instead operating under the belief that the Lions feel comfortable with Stafford for MAYBE one more year, it leaves us to choose from Joey Bosa, Solomon Thomas and Dante Fowler. Bosa is likely on his way to a multiple pro bowl career while Thomas may just grade out as average and Fowler is on his third team now. Easy choice if ya ask me.
4. NY Giants- WR Amari Cooper (2015)
The Giants would be picking from a variety of offensive players; two of which are current Dallas Cowboys. You have Amari Cooper, Zeke Elliott, Leonard Fournette on offense and then Denzel Ward at cornerback as pretty much your only other option. Give me Amari Cooper as he'd immediately step in and make an offense consisting of Daniel Jones, Barkley, Golden Tate and a two tight end threat of Evan Engram and Kaden Smith a pretty damn formidable one.
5. Miami- OLB Bradley Chubb (2018)
This WOULD be easy in theory. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey would've been a FINE choice here but the Dolphins have Xavien Howard and Byron Jones on the back end. With Jalen Ramsey out of the picture, you have an interesting linebacker in Devin White, a superb guard in Brandon Scherff and my selection Bradley Chubb. With so much locked in on the defense, Chubb (if healthy) steps in as an immediate premiere pass rusher. Barely edges out Brandon Scherff. BARELY.
6. LA Chargers- OG Quinton Nelson (2018)
Man! The Chargers would have their glut of talent to choose from if they so desired. Want an elite strong safety? Jamal Adams was picked 6th in 2018. Want a QB to groom and develop? Daniel Jones went here in 2019. If you want a flexible havoc inducing DL piece? Leonard Williams in 2015 went 6th overall. Ronnie Stanley is a pretty damn good tackle as well. Quinton Nelson is a top 3 guard in just two seasons and figures to continue to improve. It's not a premiere position for a lot of people but Nelson bucks the trend.
7. Carolina- QB Josh Allen (2018)
Funny bit? We have two Josh Allens here as Josh Allen from Wyoming and Josh Allen from Kentucky both went 7th overall. Both would be tremendous picks given the Panthers needs (an elite edge or a QB). Deforest Buckner finally hit on his potential and got paid paid for it as well, fitting in interestingly here as a potential flexible front line piece. The Panthers just paid Teddy Bridgewater relatively big time money but if you have the chance to take a really athletic strong armed QB who has shown strides in two seasons, you should do it. Imagine Allen throwing it to the likes of DJ Moore and Christian McCaffery.
8. Arizona- RB Christian McCaffery (2017)
THIS one was hard given the lack of obvious options. Do you need more receiving options? If so TE TJ Hockenson was picked 8th. Christian McCaffery is probably the best player at this spot but again, running backs and top 10s and etc etc etc. Nuke Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk are on paper a superb trio of WRs and you also have Kenyan Drake at RB. Vic Beasley is a good pass rusher who has sort of lost his way as a player (hence the one year prove it deal). Give me McCaffery I guess. I think he'd do wonders in Kingbsury's offense and I suppose you can make he and Drake work together. That's why head coaches get paid.
9. Jacksonville- OT Mike McGlinchey (2018)
There's not a lot of obvious fits for a tanking team like the Jaguars. DT Ed Oliver would be intriguing but I have no idea how he fits in with the Jaguars defense. The likes of Leonard Floyd (recently released), Ereck Flowers (failed tackle turned kinda failed guard), John Ross (oft injured speedster) are other options. Lastly there's Mike McGlinchey who was starting at right tackle for the Super Bowl 49ers. The Jaguars have spent picks at both tackle spots but McGlinchey is better.
10. Cleveland- QB Patrick Mahomes (2017)
Fuck. Would the Browns even with Baker Mayfield flirt with taking Patrick Mahomes? Who cares. Mayfield can be traded. If you have the chance to grab the best QB in the NFL, you do it. Easy peasy.
11. NY Jets- CB Marshon Lattimore (2016)
This one came down to Lattimore or Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick can do so much across a secondary and his swiss army knife toolset was amplified in a Pittsburgh secondary that left to his devices where he could roam free and fuck shit up. On the other hand, Marshon Lattimore represents one of the NFL's rare commodities; a star shutdown cornerback. Plus with Marcus Maye and Jamal Adams tie up the safety spots pretty well.
12. Las Vegas- QB Deshaun Watson (2017)
The Raiders are openly flirtatious with moving on from Derek Carr. Deshaun Watson would step in and be a massive upgrade. There's also not much here either given how 90% of the players are DL and the Raiders have plenty of names and faces they like there. Maxx Crosby, Maliek Collins, John Hankins and Clelin Ferrell to name a few.
13. San Francisco f/IND- OG Laremy Tunsil (2016)
Take the 49ers OL with Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey and Laken Tomlinson and then slide in Laremy Tunsil at RG. That's an absurd OL. There also weren't many options to really delve into either depending on how you feel about Da'Ron Payne and Vita Vea.
14. Tampa Bay- DE Marcus Davenport (2018)
Pick 14 over the past five years is a bit of a dry spell unfortunately. The best player on the list is DeVante Parker and the Bucs clearly have a collection of damn good WRs. Shaq Barrett and JPP are in place for 2020 but could the Bucs use Davenport as a third rusher and move him inside on pass rush downs. Not a lot of good ideas here unfortunately.
15. Denver- RB Melvin Gordon (2015)
Easy peasy! I mean Denver just signed him! That's a bit of a cheapie but let's keep with it. Gordon fitshere (and nobody else does).
16. Atlanta- LB Tremaine Edmunds (2018)
Edmunds with Deion Jones? Sign me up! The only other option that makes sense here is Marlon Humphrey at corner which would be an equally fine pick.
17. Dallas- S Derwin James (2018)
Given that Arik Armstead and John Allen would be 3-technique types in this defense, it makes sense we would ONCE again look at the safety market! Yay! The Cowboys scheme in 2018 apparently didn't like Derwin James as much as the media thought they did but this is a brand new scheme and a new way to play. Derwin James would edge out Keanu Neal (who BTW when healthy is an amazing safety) by virtue of being more of the chess piece the Cowboys need.
18. Miami f/PIT- C Ryan Kelly (2017)
Again there's a glut of corners here but the Dolphins have their fair share. As such, turn your attention over to a glut of centers---who they also just signed a guy for. Ryan Kelly is a pro bowl center though and you can make exceptions for that.
19. Las Vegas f/CHI- LB Leighton Vander-Esch (2018)
One of the better linebackers in the NFL prior to his neck injury, LVE was a friggin' elite athlete who could still redefine what NFL linebackers look like. His defensive coordinator is there as well (as the DL coach) and I bet Gruden would love his leadership and his ability as an off ball linebacker. This one is easy enough.
20. Jacksonville f/LAR- TE Noah Fant (2019)
The Jaguars are in the midst of a rebuild of sorts but unfortunately there's no immediate building block pieces at 20. It came down to Frank Ragnow (a versatile OL with upside) or Noah Fant and I opted for tight end Noah Fant since Minshew could use a reliable safety blanket. Assuming Fant can control his drops of course.
21. Philadelphia- WR Will Fuller (2016)
The Eagles could REALLY use some targets for Carson Wentz. Last year in clutch games they were relying on JJ Arceaga-Whiteside and Boston Scott for targets outside of their tight ends. Wouldn't have a problem going with FS Darnell Savage either who also went at 21.
22. Minnesota f/BUF- DE Bud Dupree (2015)
I don't know if the Vikings NEED an edge but even if they don't, there's really no options here. Josh Doctson was a flop in Washington, Charles Harris was a flop in Miami, Rashaan Evans plays the same spot as their glut of damn good linebackers and Andre Dillard is an unproven tackle for Philly to this point. Hit or miss here.
23. New England- Isaiah Wynn (2018)
I mean they drafted him here. Easy enough. Although would they take TE Evan Engram all things being equal?
24. New Orleans- WR DJ Moore (2018)
The Saints did grab Emmanuel Sanders but DJ Moore, Sanders and Michael Thomas is a whole different world of WR depth. There's also pretty much nobody else here worthy of snagging either.
25. Minnesota- WR Marquise Brown (2019)
HOLLYWOOD! The Vikings just traded away Stefon Diggs and could use an infusion of playmaker at their WR spot to help assist their TE room, Dalvin Cook and Adam Thielen. Marquise Brown would give Kirk Cousins a souped up version of Jamison Crowder; a WR-3 he relied heavily on in Washington.
26. Miami f/HOU- DE Montez Sweat (2019)
So the Dolphins have signed a lot of DE and we also gave them Bradley Chubb earlier BUT Montez Sweat is going to terrorize the NFL for the next 5-10 years and so he and Chubb combined? That's big time pass rush. Also, again, not much to really select from here either.
27. Seattle- CB Byron Jones (2015)
If you drew up a make and model for a Seahawks DB? It looks like Byron Jones. Byron just got paid big time money by Miami It's Byron vs Tre White and Byron fits the mold a bit better. Could also see Seattle liking Kenny Clark. Lots of good defensive players at 27.
28. Baltimore- OG Laken Tomlinson (2015)
Let Tomlinson battle it out with the interior OL the Ravens have currently. There's really not much here, it's either Tomlinson or DT Jerry Tillery.
29. Tennessee- TE David Njoku (2017)
Funny story, the 2016 1st round pick here was forfeited via deflategate. With just four names to choose from (and not really much to talk about either way), the Titans take David Njoku. Njoku has struggled with his role in Cleveland and the Titans do have some solid tight ends already in place but Njoku would be a pretty nice flier. Most of the guys here at 29 are just not good unless you're a Taven Bryan truther.
30. Green Bay- LB TJ Watt (2017)
And Cowboys fans across the globe shudder in horror. Yes, the Packers have two really good DEs in the Smith brothers. There's nobody else here who comes remotely close to the pure value TJ Watt has. Let him rush from the left side and rack up the sacks. You can figure it out somehow I figure. Let Preston Smith play 3-tech or something!
31. San Francisco- LB Reuben Foster (2017)
On one hand, the less said about Foster the better. On the other, there's really nobody else here who would come close. Unless you're a Germaine Ifedi fan?
32. Kansas City- DT Malcolm Brown (2015)
For any other team in any other league, this is Lamar Jackson. The Chiefs are really set at QB for the next 10-15 years so we'll have to take a pass. Instead Malcolm Brown is pretty much the only other really good value play. Big thumpy 1-tech/nose tackles are usually found later on in the draft but Brown is a good one and the Chiefs truthfully don't need much else either.

Summertime Sadness - Ch. 17
Word count: 1348
Warnings: None, I don’t think!
Author’s Note: I am drafting this the night before like a proactive human (thanks, Kae!) and as always, I hope you enjoy :)
Song Suggestion: Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves
It took you a while to comprehend that Josh was standing in front of you, speaking to you, after you haven’t seen him for over two weeks. His eyes creased as he tried to give you an apologetic smile.
“Hi, Dun.” You blinked your eyes after what seemed like forever. You wanted to rub them, to make sure that he really was in front of you, but even if you wanted to move you couldn’t.
“Did you enjoy the performance?” He snapped you out of the trance that he had put you in,
“Oh, yeah it was good! I never heard you guys live before!”
“Yeah, we’re really blowing up lately! That last song, Guns for Hands, people love it!”
You rubbed the back of your neck which had little dots of sweat popping up, “Yeah, I liked it.” You didn’t understand why you were so nervous, and why you couldn’t stop staring at his lips while they moved.
“Do you want to go for a walk?”
You wanted to say no to his request, but for some reason but instead, you nodded, “Sure.” You watched Josh rubbed his tattooed arm, meaning that he was also nervous.
You followed Josh a step behind so you weren’t close enough for him to touch you or anything, even though you sort of wanted to grab his hand. The kids running around made it difficult to start a conversation but eventually, it quieted down enough.
“How have you been? I like your hair!” Josh exclaimed, still keeping his steps slow and steady.
You laughed, “I wondered if you were going to say something about it. Thanks, I did it the night after-”
“The night after you dumped me?” Josh interrupted.
“To be fair, you hurt me and it was the right decision.”
Josh stopped midwalk and stared at you, “Was it? Was it the right decision Y/N?”
“What?” His sudden change of tone took you by surprise.
“Y/N, I loved you, I still am in love with you.”
“Josh,” you tried to stop him, not wanting to do this in the middle of the fairgrounds.
“Seriously, listen to me. I’m sorry for not telling you about me moving to Washington, but you literally kept on explaining how excited you were and I didn’t have the guts.”
“Well you had the guts that night, right after getting my hopes up.” You crossed your arms in anger.
“I know that, and I’m so sorry. I know my apologies can’t make it better, but I truly am so sorry.”
“I know you’re sorry, Josh, but do you realize that you talked to me about dates in the fall knowing that you wouldn’t be here?”
“Yes, I do realize. I realize that I made a huge mistake, and I lost one of the most important things in my life. Please, Y/N, I miss you.” Josh’s voice quivered at the end, and you could see his eyes well up with tears.
“Josh,” you whispered. You grabbed his hand, and he looked down at your fingers intertwining. “I’ve missed you too.”
“I want you back, Y/N.”
“When do you leave? Summer is almost over,” you asked, not really wanting to know the answer.
“A week,” you saw Josh suck in a breath, anticipating your response.
“Oh,” your heart felt like it broke again.
“But Y/L/N, I want to spend the entire week with you.”
“I want that too, Dun.” Now it was your turn for you to start crying. “I’m sorry for being dramatic and leaving you, we lost out on time we could have been together.”
Josh wiped a tear off your cheek that had fallen, “Don’t focus on the past, just look forward and we can make this week an amazing one.”
“Can I kiss you?” you asked. Josh nodded, and he leaned down planting his lips on yours. His familiar taste made you realize how much you had missed his kisses.
“God, Y/N, I’ve missed you more than you could have ever imagined,” he leaned his forehead against yours, closing his eyes.
You smiled, “And I’ve missed you too.” You pulled back, looking into his shining dark chocolate eyes. Josh took a strand of your short purple hair and twisted it around his finger.
“You know, I think I should dye my hair too,” he suggested
“Really? You want to?”
“Yeah! Let’s do it tomorrow!” His face lit up, and you couldn’t help to smile with him. You missed Josh so much, and even though this summer hasn’t been what you were expecting, you could now turn it around for the last week at least.
“I’m glad I came to the fair,” you giggled.
“Me too,” Josh grabbed your chin and lifted it up so he could kiss you again. This time it was a long kiss, and your body felt like it could fly away right then and there.
“You guys back together?” A male voice interrupted your guys kiss. You and Josh turned around to see Tyler watching you both.
“I guess so,” Josh chuckled, placing an arm around your shoulder.
“I like your hair Y/N, even though when I left you at Mariah’s that one night it did not look like that,” Tyler mentioned.
“Well, heartbreak can do that to ya,” you joked, giving Josh a little nudge with your elbow. His eyes shifted down to yours and back to Tyler’s with uneasiness. “Josh, I’m joking.”
“I’m glad you guys are back together, but I’m going to suggest that you two not make out in the middle of a family friendly fair,” Tyler slapped his hand down on Josh’s shoulder. “I’ll see you tomorrow for recording?”
“Aw man, is it alright if I hang with Y/N?” Josh looked at Tyler with wide eyes. Tyler looked at you, and then back to Josh before shrugging.
“Yeah, it’s all good! I’m going to get going, nice seeing you Y/N!” Tyler walked away giving you a small wave.
“I was thinking, I want you to meet my family,” you turned to Josh once Tyler was away.
“Like your parents?” Josh stared at you with wide eyes.
“Yes.”
“Y/N! I’ve been looking all over for you!” You turned around to see Bri running up to you. “Oh, hi Josh!”
“Bri!” You looked startled, not knowing what to do. You had been talking to her constantly the past week about how much he hurt you, and she was helping you get over him.
“It’s nice to finally meet the infamous Bri!” Josh held out his hand to your little sister. You watched her light up and shake his hand.
“Are you guys dating again!?” Bri grabbed your arm and started to jump up and down.
“Ow, Bri stop. Yes, I think we are.” You looked over at Josh with a question and he nodded with a smile.
“Yay! As long as you don't hurt her again,” Bri pointed a finger at Josh‘s chest.
“I won’t!” he held his hands up to plead innocent.
“Good because if you do I’m going to have to cut off your-”
“Okay!” You slapped your hand over Bri’s mouth, shoving her into your body. She struggled, trying to get your hand off hers.
“I couldn’t breathe!” she sputtered, finally prying your hand off.
“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt Y/N. I’ve made that mistake once, and I’m never going to repeat it.” Josh held out his pinky. You watched as Bri pinky promised Josh.
“Bri and I should probably be getting home, I’ll call you later tonight?”
“Yeah, of course! Thank you for giving me a second chance,” he leaned in for another kiss, and you responded with a little peck.
“Gross,” Bri mumbled.
“Bye Bri, nice meeting you!” Josh waved, walking away. You watched him turn around and put his hands in his pockets. The sunset hit his tattooed arm so that the colors glistened in the warm, golden light. You were so glad you went to the fair, and you were finally feeling happy again. Maybe everything was looking up.

IT HURTS SO GOOOOOD❣️ Also, I’m having a good laugh that @sherlollydramoine and I submitted the same thing 💞 We know what we need more of and that is JOSH WASHINGTON. Also, thank you❤️
“We can’t do this” kisses with JOSH (PS: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH 💞AND SQUEAKED WHEN I SAW YOU WERE DOING PROMPTS 💞)
@sherlollydramoine you guys sent these in like literally at the same time so I guess great minds think alike! I wanna do more writing for Josh, he needs more love! Set it a world where Hannah and Beth don’t die because he deserves to be happy.
~
It had been a good night.
Everyone had been able to make it; Beth, Hannah, Sam, Ashley, Chris, Michael, Jessica, Emily and Mike. A weekend up in the cottage was just what we all needed. We had done it all, sat around the fire, telling funny stories we somehow haven’t heard yet over the years of our friendships, played a rather tense game of monopoly and of course, the night wouldn’t be complete without a few drinking games. By the end of the night, most people had gone to their assigned bedrooms, preparing for the rough hangovers that were to come to the next morning.
All that’s left by now is Chris, Ashley, Josh and myself. Chris and Ashley are lost in their own world, staring into each other's eyes and being far too oblivious to the other obvious feelings. Josh and I sit on the couch across from them, arms pressed together comfortably as we watch them.
“When do you think they’ll get their heads out of their ass and finally get together?” I ask him quietly, watching as his face blossoms into amusement and he laughs, eyes crinkling and shining against the low propane lights.
“God, Probably never,” he replies. His head rolls to the side to look at me, “I’m really glad you came.” he says softly.
I smile up at him, taking a hand in mine and shaking it playfully, “I’m glad I came too.”
He stares at me for a few more moments before nudging his knee against mine, “c’mon,” he gets up, taking our still interlocked hands to pull me off the couch, only staggering a little when I sway into the solid mass of his body, “I wanna show you something.”
He drags me up the seemingly countless flights of the stairs up to the top floor where the master room is and out onto the balcony.
“Josh, no, c’mon it’s fucking-” I stop short when I see the view that’s laid out in front of us. The balcony overlooks the downward slope of the mountain. It’s a canvas of endless pine trees, all covered in snow. There’s a glimpse of a river here and there, but what strikes me most is the night sky. It's dark, almost black but with the slightest hint of blue. There’s not a cloud in the sky tonight, just the moonlight and the stars, stark bright against the backdrop of the sky without a trace of light pollution. IT’s absolutely gorgeous.
“Wow,” I say softly, taking it all in.
“Pretty huh?” He says, suddenly appearing by my side.
I nod, staring out over the cliff a second longer before looking back at him, “I stand by my point though, it’s still fucking cold out.”
He chuckles, shrugging out of his thick zip-up sweater and draping it over my shoulders. His arm wraps around my shoulder, rubbing my arm and pulling me closer to him in an attempt to warm me up.
“Better?” he asks.
I nod and can’t help but smile, resting my head on his shoulder. There’s always been a part of me that had a crush on Josh. I mean come on, he was tall with dark hair and pretty blue eyes, how could you not? But I’d always ignored it, being best friends with his sisters, it was a moral grey area. But with the alcohol flowing through my system, as warm and fuzzy as the feeling of his body heat slipping into mine, it was harder to ignore.
“Why’d you wanna bring me up here?” I ask softly, trying to distract myself.
He shrugs, “I thought you’d like it,” he says, “You always talk about nature are how good it makes you feel so calm.”
I hum, touched that he remembered that I mentioned the smallest detail like that.
“Wanna know a secret?” I say before I can stop myself.
That perks him up, turning us so we’re face to face, his eyes sparkling with interest, “Of course.”
I bite my lip, trying to hide a shy smile. I know I shouldn’t but the moonlight is reflecting in his eyes and I can’t help myself from taking a step forward and placing my hands on his chest.
“I’ve had a crush on you for years,” I admit.
I watch his face change. Facial expression shifting from a curious excitement to confusion to shock and then to a completely dumbfounded expression, accented by the slightest tug of his lips into a smile, “really?”
I hum again, nodding and looking down at our feet.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asks, a finger coming to my chin to tilt my head back up to look at him.
I sigh, eyes flickering over his face, “Because it’d make things too complicated.” I confess, “With me being so close with your sisters, it would make things weird if it didn’t work out.”
He sighs, “you’re right.” he says, but still he gets closer, “It would make things weird.”
We’re speaking the same language, both of us knowing full well this is wrong but unable to stop ourselves from leaning ever closer together, “Really weird.” I agree breathlessly.
He’s so close to me now. Our noses are touching, eyes flickering from lips to eyes and back again. His hand finds mine, tangling our fingers together. I’m not cold anymore, the heat from our bodies being so close warming me from the outside. I can feel his breath on my lips.
“And yet,” he starts, “I think it’d feel so good.”
Our lips press into each other ever so slightly, and for a moment it’s absolutely wonderful. His lips are soft and warm despite the cold that bites at our skin. It can barely be described as a kiss but it qualifies. I want to keep kissing him, but that rational part of my brain (the sober part) kicks in and breaks away. I lean my forehead against his, keeping my eyes shut as I blow out a frustrated breath.
“That was a mistake,” I whisper, squeezing his fingers in mine.
“Was it?” he asks, nose nudging against mine again.
My eyes flutter open and immediately I’m lost in them. His other hand finds my waist gently tugging me closer ever so slightly.
“We can’t do this,” I try, but my hand is already coming up to grip his bicep.
“We can,” he insists, “if you want to.”
I tilt my head up, letting our lips brush together again, just to feel the pulse of electricity that flows through my body at the contact before I pull away completely. Our hands fall to our sides, both of us staring at each other longingly. Despite every fibre of my being screaming at me not to, I shrug off his sweater and hand it to him.
“Goodnight, Josh.”

E3 2018 Microsoft’s Press Conference thoughts
Then we got Microsoft…
WhoaOn the one hand I was impressed with the number of games, on the other hand…most were games that were coming to other systems and, while I liked the rapid fire way of doing things, I really felt that they should have given time for a few of these so we knew who was making them. The few presenters that we got did a fairly good job of handling the situation.
Regarding the games I was kind of surprised by the choices there, although some have me thinking we’re going to see more online game set ups for these.
Halo Infinite to me seemed rather large for a traditional Halo game, and, while the trailer looks amazing, I have to wonder if this, like Anthem, and Fallout 76 is going to be an online game. Although we’re told that Master Chief is involved, so it’s up in the air if this will be a GAAS game, or a large open world First Person Shooter. Although, given the situation with Fallout 76 and the turn a lot of game companies are doing to have their own, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one.
Ori and the Will of the Whips looked amazing to see and I was really happy to see it. The fact that we see it growing the story from the beginning. It just looks really pretty and strong for a platformer. Not much to say other then Pretty. Something about the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, while looking really interesting, has me less interested in it, but given it’s From Soft, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this turn out to be very Dark Souls like. I was interested in exactly why he’s not dying. Of course it’s From Soft so I’m not not expecting some really dark themes in this game about death and the main being a living dead creature possessed by the death gods for some reason or another. Though the monsters in this look really unpleasant. Probably will end up with Ghost of Tsushima over this one, but I know From Soft fans will be getting this.
Todd Howard came out and talked up Fallout 76, which later got revealed to be an online game, so any interest I had over the idea of this game being something that won’t have weirdos being jerks, got thrown out the window. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit was okay. LiS wasn’t my cup of tea given the whole thing with the endings and that you couldn’t help everyone involved and the prequel never really amazed me either, so this one is low on my radar. Though the animations look a lot smoother than in the first game. Of course we had a Crackdown 3, no surprise there and not much to add on that.
Metro Exodus is intriguing given the location and story it’s telling. I’m going to take a wait and see set on this one as the original stories that the Metro series is based on is really interesting to me from a writing perspective.
The big one was Kingdom Hearts 3, and the surprise twist at the end with Aqua. Although I don’t totally buy that this is Aqua. One thing that got to me was the missing sound effects, and some of the voices, particularly Elsa’s as I don’t know if that’s Idina Menzel or not voicing her, but that is Kristian Bell and Josh Gad voicing Anna and Olaf. One thing of surprise is the fact that Xbox got to premier this over Sony or Square Enix themselves at E3 this year. Also we got the song now that will be the theme of this, and we got to see Lee and Kairie watching the sun, which makes me think that they may play a part in this…at least I hope they do.
Racing game Forza Horizon 4 looks really nice again. Not really surprised by this, and while I would love to play a driving simulation game, really not in the mood to be dealing with a racing game for me.
Now onto something that has me unnerved. Okay so I’m not against the idea of a studio being acquired by a publisher/Manufacture. The issue for me though is that Microsoft is not one that plays fair with their games, and tends to dictate things to the creative teams, less so than EA on it’s own Triple A games, but more so than EA does on it’s idies. What does this mean? Well given that they now have what Sony has with it’s World Wide studios deal, probably, with the Initiative, I really am worried that more games will have to follow a set look or style for Microsoft if they’re under their blanket. That’s not even the fact that they’ve acquired, Undead Labs, Playground Games, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games.
On the one hand, it’s good for the studios because hey that’s money for them. On the other hand the pull back from creativity and only having it on one system, especially for smaller studios, and particularly Microsoft, it can become a problem over time if those games don’t sell well on that system. Games like NT build that won’t be an issue since a good number of them are more action oriented hack and slash, or dramatic types. But studios like Compulsion which is making We Happy Few this could be a bit bad as Microsoft can be notorious for shuttering companies that don’t produce enough in sales, similar to EA but not as badly. Certain games would, I think, work better on the PS and Switch as both systems tend to have higher numbers, but also both would be good to push a higher number of sales. My main worry with this is that that studios like NT, for example, just got off a strong game after the crash that was DmC, and the issues that came out of that…and let’s be honest Capcom through them under the bus. Given the issues also with recent game, mind it was a well made story, and the bugs either having this deal will help them…or force them to reconsider what they’re doing there. Let’s hope it’s not the later for these companies because we don’t need more shuddered studios.
The Division 2 looks interesting, but it also seems to be an online game. My main issue so far is the story for two big things. 1. The idea that the small pox can be transmitted via dollars seems really weird, and 2, and more importantly, the fall down of the whole system. Unless the state of Virginia and Maryland were blocked off and that area quarantined, the whole thing with the lawlessness doesn’t hold water. You have the CDC, that’s out of Washington DC, that would be on that case like a bad case of the hives, and that’s not to mention you also have Camp David and other locations that the President and congress can go to run things and get things under control. Thirdly, when you have a crisis of this nature, as we’ve seen, people tend to try to help one another. So I have a hard time believing that people would become this lawless and insane. Unless this is some underground militant group it’s hard to see this story holding water. At least it looks better than the first game.
Laura’s back in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and…I have mix feelings. While style wise the game looks very lovely, the colors of the jungle stand out and the story seems to have an interesting idea going on. The game play…is…uninspired. I get that the whole idea is to make Laura out to be badass, but come on, can we please try to show more of the puzzles and less of the killing of random baddies? Also another end of the world story? Really? Come on Crystal Dynamics; give me something more inspired in your overall story telling than that. Please.
Session…pretty much Skate 4. Nice designs but I don’t do well on these games and they’re not normally a game I would play…so not much to say on this.
Devil May Cry 5, on the other hand I have a lot to say about. Let’s start with….holy crap! How did they keep this under wraps! Seriously, I’m kind of surprised the DMC community didn’t dig this out while it was being made. So Capcom may finally be paying attention to what players have been requesting. As for the Trailer, I will say this much, I was at first thinking Nero was DmC Dante, with the haircut. However, fans did get some clues given that Ruben, Johnny and Daniel were tweeting clues that something was going down. So Nero’s over all look, again mixed feelings, I like that the shorter hair gives him his own look outside of Dante’s longer hair look, and makes him stand out more, and the story about the missing arm is going to be something different. Certainly, they’re trying to keep both sides happy giving a slightly darker edge to him, but there’s still the wise cracks going on, which is nice. Nero wasn’t the one that gives a lot of jokes. I will say I should have known it was him given Red Queen.
Nico, I’m pretty sure she’s going to be related to Nina, Dante’s arm’s dealer. Though the connections will have to come in time, but I really like her and I hope she sticks around. Dante’s sudden appearance was a pleasure, and…well he’s riding what looks like a devils arm, so I’m not sure when this story is coming from…though he apparently was missing so, probably after 2. What I want to know is if that’s Vergil as the third character on the cover image. Please let it be Vergil…Please Capcom!
Cuphead DLC: Yay we get to play as Ms. Chalice! That is all!
Jump Force is weird. Okay so I realize that this is going to be a Weekly Shonen Jump game with characters from all sorts of series (and how the hell do you fight Light given his attack would probably an instant kill, given the book and all that) and that the story is going to be all sorts of Camp. While I’m really excited, I’m also worried that it’s going to be something that only Weekly fans will like and people will be annoyed that various characters won’t be in there. For example, are we going to include a JoJo character? Will you have older characters from Japan that fans may not know about, or are we sticking only with American based characters? Like, yes we have Goku, and I’m sure we’ll have My Hero characters in there and Bleach, but are they going to put in Claymore? Kenshin? Allen Walker? The Leads from Claymore? New characters from the newer series that just recently came out? How do they determine who comes in…and more importantly, if Gintama is in there…do I get to break the fourth wall with him? Also can I play as L since you have freaking Light in there? Is L or Near the head of the good guy side? Are we getting female lead characters too, like the ladies of Claymore? I’m just worried this is going to be another Jump Brawl with the same characters as before.
No comment on Dying Light 2 other then, oh look Troy in another game.
BattleToads surprised me though, and I have to wonder if it’s going to be on all systems since the characters were on Nintendo when they first came out. I would think that Switch would get this too given the fact that it’s clearly going to be more of a platform game.
Just Cause 4, alright…so we’re going to Venez…I mean an unknown country in South America. I mean…it’s another Just Cause game. Not much to add here. Nice Trailer?
Gears of War came out with something funny with the Pop version, which I think could be fun to play for people like myself who couldn’t care less about the original Gears series. I will say this much It’s nice to see so many colors in 5’s trailer. This is a departure from what Gears 1 was like and seeing the characters have become far more mature and more like dad’s to our new female lead. Gears of Dad? Actually I kind of like this trend that games are taking with the idea of the insane killer male lead becoming a more mature father figure for the younger character. It shows not only how the company has grown, it also shows how gamers have grown in general. I mean a lot of the Gears fans are now, in some cases, parents of their own and they could understand that worry that the team has for their youngest member and the parental fear that they’re going to face. It’s a nice change. In addition, Gears Tactics could be a useful deal for those who abandon C&C given the mobile game.
So we have a new Xbox being worked on…Grand….Okay….Does that mean another new freaking OS Microsoft? Am I going to have to do a new one of those? Also where’s your Holo thing? Have you abandoned that?
Nier Automata getting on Xbox. I’m expecting them to be also working on an edition for the Switch as well. This really isn’t surprising at all. I was actually waiting to see that release because I have a friend who refused to buy a PS4 to play it even though he loves the game’s director and creator.
Several Collections and Expansions were announced including the whole thing of Sea of Thieves, a New MMORPG –which I can’t remember the name of, Halo –Master Chief Collection (running that thing down to the ground aren’t we MS).
Tunic looks cute, but I have to wonder if it will sell well on this system or work better on the PC for them.
As for We Happy Few…what the hell happened there? This game has changed, dramatically. From what I can remember it was supposed to be more Bioshock like, but now we have a very trippy sort of dramatic story going on. I couldn’t really tell how you play because the trailer didn’t seem to indicate if it was a “hit the crazy people” or more a Tell Tale like story driven adventure game. I’m really confused as to what the whole mystery is or who we are. Are we the guy in the trailer, the woman, or someone else? How did this happen? Who’s behind this? The latter questions are fine to have, but the trailer leaves a lot of confusion as to what this game really is, and it’s kind of disappointing for someone who was hoping for more of a Bioshock experience. On the other hand the game goes boast some lovely visuals, so I’ll give them that.
Then there’s Tales of Vesperia, which is an updated version of the game, and is coming to all systems so I guess Microsoft paid to get the trailer. I’m going to be playing it on the Switch when it comes to that.
Lastly CD Project Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. I don’t really know what to say about it. While it boasts a great deal of visually arresting art, I’m not feeling it. Maybe it’s because when I hear Cyberpunk I’m looking for something different and we’re seeing a sort of Mix of Blade Runner here, and I wish people would knock that off. I get that a lot of people have connections to that series, and love it, but maybe I was hoping for something ala System Shock or maybe something along the lines of Watchdogs –but how it was supposed to be played with you using your phone to act as a trapping device vs. actively shooting and driving around Chicago. Visually it looks nice, but honestly, the world of Good and Evil looks more interesting to me. I hope that Cyberpunk 2077 does well, but I’ll probably watch someone play it rather than me struggle with it. Over all I thought they did a good job, honestly other then Ubisoft, I thought they did the best physically presenting things. So probably a solid B+ from me.

Get Excited! – Ten Takeaways from Eagles 28, Redskins 13
Yay!
The Eagles defeated Mark Sanchez at Lincoln Financial Field.
It’s a huge win for the Birds, who have now beaten:
Matt Ryan at home
a rusty Andrew Luck at home
Blake Bortles on a neutral field
Eli Manning at home
Eli Manning on the road
and Mark Sanchez at home
Talk about murderer’s row.
We should all be jumping for joy after running through that gauntlet. It’s a super impressive Eagles’ resume, featuring thrilling victories over the 6-6 Colts, the 4-8 Falcons, the 4-8 Jaguars, the 4-8 Giants, and now a lame duck Washington team on their third string quarterback.
I’ll be honest with you; I really struggled to find any inspiration to write about this game. I did the sardonic angle last week, so I didn’t want to repeat that again this week, but I just don’t know how else to approach the Eagles right now. They’re a banged-up 6-6 football team that just beat a couple of loser squads at home. They took care of business, as they should have.
The bright side, I suppose, is that they’ve given themselves another chance. It wasn’t long ago that they had a crack at Dallas while sitting at 4-4, a game they choked away on their home field. So you claw your way back to .500 and get another shot at the Cowboys, who have won four games in a row but ain’t exactly the 1985 Chicago Bears. Stranger things have happened in the NFL, and if the Eagles knock off Dallas at Jerry World, then they pull level with the Cowboys at 7-6 and things at least become interesting heading into week 15.
But what then? They’ll certainly get squashed by the Rams to fall to 7-7 before coming home for a tough game against the 9-3 Texans. I don’t know if there’s a guaranteed win on the schedule until the season finale in Washington.
I see a lot of Eagles fans on Twitter this morning bending over backwards to convince themselves that this team is somehow gonna go on a miraculous run and rip off a few more victories and win the division at 9-7 and slide into the playoffs. What would make you believe that? Because they beat the Giants and the Redskins at home?
I just don’t see it. If you want to reprise the underdogs theme from last year and play the disrespect card and talk about what can happen on “any given Sunday,” knock yourself out, but my eyes and my brain are telling me that is a .500 football team and nothing more.
1) Opening drives
Really nice drives to start not just the first half, but the second half as well.
This was the first time the Eagles scored on the opening drive since the first Giants game way back in week six, and they did it with this play selection:
pass/run/run/pass/pass/pass/run/run/run/run/run/pass
Five straight runs on that drive, finished off by a Carson Wentz scramble and step-up to pick out Golden Tate in the corner of the end zone for his first Eagles touchdown.
In the second half, it went something like this:
pass/run/pass/pass/run/pass/pass/pass
Wentz threw the interception at the goal line to end that drive, but everything looked pretty up until that point. He hit three different receivers and the Eagles worked both Corey Clement and Josh Adams into the possession.
Some good stuff there, and maybe that assuages some concerns about Doug’s inability to script the opening drive this season. The Eagles put up 436 yards of total offense Monday night, and if it wasn’t for two blown red zone trips, they could have easily scored 40.
2) Carson Wentz
The interception was a big blemish an otherwise solid night for Carson.
He made plays with his feet. He got outside of the pocket. He looked more like the Carson Wentz we saw last season, who was able to extend plays and move around a bit and allow his receivers to reroute back to him.
Carson finished 27-39 for 306 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. His timing seemed to be off on a couple of his throws, but I found this to be the biggest positive from his performance:
Carson Wentz went 6-7 and threw for a career-high 100 yards on passes outside the pocket on Monday.
All of those passes came off play-action. Wentz also set a career-high with 163 play-action passing yards. pic.twitter.com/rG0lDBrzhX
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) December 4, 2018
Yep.
Here’s what he said about that:
“Play-action, boots and nakeds and stuff are something that we always thought kind of our bread and butter, especially on first and second down. Getting the run game going, really opens up those things. Gets me on the edge, gets me a chance to make some plays, and gets some guys down the field and underneath to make some plays down the field. So yes, I think we used it effectively tonight.”
Doug Pederson said that they game-planned to have Carson under center more in this game, so that’s something to look for when we go back and watch the film. They have been primarily a shotgun team dating back to 2016.
3) Runs and screens
The Eagles ran the ball 29 times with Adams, Clement, and Darren Sproles. Wentz finished with 4 rushing attempts in the box score, so the split ended up being 44 to 29 in terms of pass/run. That’s 60/40 on the dot, which is right around where most NFL teams are going to fall.
Adams carried the ball 20 times for 85 yards and Clement had 5 for 27. Sproles went 4 for 22 with the nice touchdown run.
I didn’t see anything super special from Adams or Clement last night, but I thought Corey had a couple of really solid screen plays on the night that essentially functioned as an extension of the run game. On the third touchdown drive specifically, there was a big 23 yard gain that took the Eagles from their own 33 yard line to the Washington 44:
Lovely play, and a really nice design.
I honestly thought this was one of their best-executed plays last night.
They motion a receiver over to the left before sending all three on misdirection routes, which clears out the near side of the field and allows the offensive linemen to rumble downfield:
Clear ’em out, bit of play action, screen left and let the linemen do their thing for a 23 yard gain.
Speaking of which:
4) Put this on the highlight reel
This isn’t really a takeaway, I just want to highlight the best block any Eagles player has laid this season.
Jason Kelce has put together a career’s worth of downfield blocking highlights, but the combination he ripped off last night was maybe one of the best two or three plays I’ve ever seen him make.
Watch this video clip over and over again:
.@DarrenSproles, officially back.#FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/orwZLxSFXh
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 4, 2018
It’s one thing to take Mason Foster and drive him back 10 yards with one arm, but then he carries that into a crushing hit on Ha Ha Clinton-Dix that just puts the safety completely on his back.
Kelce on that sequence:
“It’s been one of our better plays during my tenure here. It’s a good play because it works to one of my strengths and gets me out in space. It also works to one of Darren’s strengths because it gets him out in space. We just caught them and got them in a good situation [for us]. I don’t think they were expecting it, and it was a big play.”
That’s a “football play” if I’ve ever seen one. Whenever Jason Kelce retires, or whenever somebody puts together that Youtube tribute video, this should be one of the first three or four plays on the reel.
5) Zach Ertz
Remember how Josina Anderson’s source felt like the Eagles were targeting Zach Ertz too much?
He again led the team, this time with 10 targets, but Golden Tate actually finished with a few more receiving yards. Carson targeted Tate, Nelson Agholor, and Alshon Jeffery 20 times, so, yeah, I guess it was a little lopsided, with Ertz earning 33% f the targets between those four players.
Whatever the case, Ertz is breaking records and on pace to break a few more. The Eagles PR staff pulled these notes and included them in their recap email:
Zach Ertz established a new single-season franchise record for receptions (currently 93), surpassing the previous mark of 90 set by Brian Westbrook in 2007.
Ertz’s 93 receptions are tied for the 13th-most by a TE in NFL history. He is only 7 receptions shy of becoming just the fourth TE in NFL history to reach 100 in a season, joining Jason Witten in 2012 (110), Tony Gonzalez in 2004 (102) and Dallas Clark in 2009 (100).
Ertz now has 978 receiving yards, which are the 2nd-most by a TE in single-season team history, trailing only Pete Retzlaff in 1965 (1,190).
Ertz surpassed Ozzie Newsome (4,569, 1978-83) for the 8th-most receiving yards by an NFL TE in their first six seasons (currently 4,642). He also moved past Fred Barnett (4,634, 1990-95) for the 11th-most receiving yards in Eagles history (5th-most by a TE).
I’ll give you one more:
Ertz has the most targets out of any tight end this season (121) and the sixth most targets among all NFL players. The only players to be targeted more are Antonio Brown, Adam Thielen, Julio Jones, Davante Adams, and OBJ.
He’s having a special season. No matter how mediocre the Eagles have been in some of these games, it seems like he’s just doing his thing, running the seam and catching everything thrown his way.
For what it’s worth, Ertz was asked about the ESPN report after the game, and said this:
On the ESPN report stating the problems with the offense are due to the fact that Ertz gets too many targets:
“I did hear of it, obviously. Obviously there are things that come out, playing in the NFL for six years, there are things that come out, sources all the time. I don’t feel like, I hope I’m not the problem, I don’t think I’m the problem. I’m just trying to be the best tight end I can be. I’ve said all along, it’s all about efficiency when it comes to targets and catches. I feel like we are efficient in that regard. I am just focusing on trying to put wins on the table, that’s the only thing I try and do. I don’t really focus on whether I get the ball or not. I’ve said it all along whether I get two catches or 10 catches, most important thing to me is winning football games. And I thoroughly believe each and every guy in that locker room feels the same way. There has never been a doubt of selfishness from anyone in that locker room. I don’t want to give it too much merit, just is what it is. Focused on the win tonight. I felt like everyone got the ball. It was a good team win and that’s what I’m focused on.”
On whether he addressed the report with the team or did he just not care for it:
“No, I didn’t care at all. I don’t think there was anything to address. I mean, it was an anonymous source, so if it was one of my teammates, I feel like, I mean I don’t have a motive by any means. I feel like I have a great relationship with all of my teammates. I can’t give too much credit to an anonymous source because I don’t know who it was.”
Pretty diplomatic answers there.
6) what happened here?
Mark Sanchez comes in the game.
The Redskins are back up inside their own 10.
You know they are going to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson.
Yet this happens:
Adrian Peterson couldn’t get a job until August 20th. pic.twitter.com/c0feaP7BDo
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) December 4, 2018
Three things I think happened here:
it’s a power right for the Redskins, so they’ve got two extra blockers on that side of the formation and keep in a receiver to throw a block
it looks like Fletcher Cox is held as Peterson comes through the hole
Kamu Grugier-Hill can’t shed his block and a couple of guys miss their gaps
I tried to freeze it to show all three of these items:
Sidney Jones also misses a tackle there. It looked like Cre’Von LeBlanc was blitzing off the right side.
Here’s Malcolm Jenkins on the play:
“They caught us out of our gaps. It was just a big hole and AP hit it downhill and broke one tackle and showed that he still has those jets. It was just one of those ones where you just chalk it up and move on. Before that play, we were doing good against the run and afterwards we were able to bottle it down. They just caught us.”
And Peterson said this:
“As the play developed, I saw the rotation and the blitz coming off to the right side, and I knew I wanted to be patient and press it and see what presented itself. I kind of predetermined that it would be the cut-back or just straight ahead. For me, once I took my steps, it was about being patient and then seeing how it developed. [Redskins LT] Trent [Williams] and [Redskins LG Jonathan] Cooper, they did a great job backside sealing it off. I was just able to bounce around and once I broke free from the one tackle, it was lights out in my eyes.”
Yeah, it happens every so often. That’ll go into the film session this week at NovaCare.
7) winning in these categories
A weekly entry:
won time of possession, 39 to 21
0 turnover margin (each team with an interception)
7-13 on third down (53.8%)
0-1 on fourth down
allowed Redskins to go 2-10 on third down (20%)
lost 0 yards on 0 sacks
3 for 5 success rate in red zone
5 penalties for 38 yards
Strong marks across the board. The Redskins couldn’t do jack shit when Sanchez was asked to throw the ball, which is why that TOP number is so incredibly lopsided.
I think the biggest takeaway here is that the Birds allowed zero sacks for the first time in forever, and that’s partly on Carson with some smart scrambles to extend plays, but the line was excellent last night. The penalties were limited across the board and the offense did extremely well moving the sticks on third down. If they can do similar things next week, they really do have a chance to win in Dallas.
8) Doug’s best call?
The two point conversion to make it a two-score game early in the fourth quarter was an obvious analytical call, but smart nonetheless.
Otherwise, I think he did a nice job mixing and matching the run game with some screens, some play action, and some bread and butter passing plays as well. I really want to go back over the film and look at what Carson did under center.
9) Doug’s worst call?
I was not a fan of running Darren Sproles on third and four on the second drive, which resulted in a three and out.
The 4th down play call on the fourth drive, when Josh Adams was stuffed on a goal line – that was another pretty poor call.
That was a “duo” play, which, in most simple terms, features a pair of double team blocks and lets the running back sort of choose where to go. You want to get four legs on two legs at the line of scrimmage and push vertically.
It’s not a horrible concept; the Eagles just completely forgot to block a guy coming off the opposite side, so I don’t know who screwed up or what was the actually design there.
The only other thing that stood out to me didn’t actually involve Doug Pederson, but Jim Schwartz instead. In the first half they took a penalty to move Washington back to something like the 36 yard line and set up a 3rd and 30. Then Schwartz played his soft picket defense, the Eagles allowed a 10 yard gain, and Washington knocked in a 44 yard field goal.
If you’re going to sit there in zone and allow the underneath completion, why accept the penalty in the first place? You can pressure the QB and go for an incompletion, which turns a 44 yard attempt into a 54 yard attempt.
Shrug. I don’t get it. They need to take a look at the picket defense and change the parameters under which it’s deployed.
10) Monday night football crew
I want to give these guys a fair shake and I tried to give them a fair shake, but it’s just not a good broadcast.
First of all, it took us a total of three minutes to get a booing Santa Claus reference from Jason Witten, who still sounds clunky on the broadcast. He’s got a lot of great football knowledge, but I don’t feel like he’s applying it in the best way.
The producers should be keeping it simple with him:
“Jason, just tell me what you see on the field. Tell me what formation that is. Tell me what coverage the defense is playing.”
Things like that, you know? Tony Romo did a nice job with Xs and Os when he began broadcasting, I think the only thing that bothered fans with him was that he tried to be Nostradamus and predict what every play was going to be. Witten has a lot of good stuff locked away in his head, I just feel like it doesn’t come out in a fluid way, if that makes sense.
Beyond that, the second half discussion about Reuben Foster was horrifying and totally out of place. It felt forced and fake, like a public service announcement lacking any kind of sincerity.
First of all, they were talking about this topic in the middle of an interception return, which was ridiculous. Second, you can’t talk about domestic violence without a female voice, right? How can you have a meaningful discussion on domestic violence when the two voices are Booger McFarland and Jason Witten? Third, the placement was poor from a production standpoint. When you have a nuanced and delicate issue like that, you need at least five or six minutes in a proper setting to discuss it. Do it during halftime or before the game. That allows you to give it the requisite attention while not disrupting the game.
Finally, and this doesn’t have anything to do with ESPN, but what the hell was Howard Eskin wearing last night?
Yep. Golden Tate was right. He does look like a banana pudding

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/nfl-overcomes-donald-trumps-anthem-protest-war/
NFL overcomes Donald Trump's anthem protest war
A handful of NFL players and owners met Tuesday to discuss social issues, inequality, and other issues in the United States today, and for the first time ever, it seems like the meeting was extremely productive. What’s the different? Well, for starting, the NFL national anthem protests didn’t come up. Not once. The players and owners were able to have a legitimate, constructive conversation about the issues without it devolving into a petty argument over whether or not the flag is being disrespected. And, as a result, it went well, and it gave everyone some promise for the future—just ask Indianapolis Colts defensive back Darius Butler. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/920606910109356032 “Obviously it’s a different perspective,” said Butler. “I think that’s the most important thing when it comes to these issues, perspective and respect everyone’s right regardless of how they feel. Whether it is peacefully protesting or speaking on these issues. I think it’s important to respect everyone…It’s ongoing; it’s not going to be a resolution overnight. Obviously, these are issues important to the players. That’s what we talked about and some things going forward.” Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was a little more concise in his review of the meeting, but he made the same point that this was a legitimate open discussion. “We heard what they had to say, and they heard us,” said Ross. “It’s open talks, and that’s a good thing.” Even the NFLPA, which is historically difficult to please, especially regarding issues of players’ rights and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard, seemed satisfied with the content and direction of the meeting. “Today owners and players had a productive meeting focused on how we can work together to promote positive social change and address inequality in our communities,” said the NFLPA in a statement. “NFL executives and owners joined NFLPA executives and player leaders to review and discuss plans to utilize our platform to promote equality and effectuate positive change. We agreed that these are common issues and pledged to meet again to continue this work together.” Representing the NFL were commissioner Roger Goodell, head of football operations and former player Troy Vincent, and owners from 11 teams, including Jed York (San Francisco 49ers); John Mara (New York Giants); Robert McNair (Houston Texans); Arthur Blank (Atlanta Falcons); Stephen Ross (Miami Dolphins); Terry Pegula (Buffalo Bills); Michael Bidwill (Arizona Cardinals); Shad Khan (Jacksonville Jaguars); Art Rooney (Pittsburgh Steelers); Jeffery Lurie (Philadelphia Eagles); and Robert Kraft (New England Patriots). Joining Darius Butler on the players’ side were Josh Norman of the Washington Redskins; Kelvin Beachum and Demario Davis of the New York Jets; Malcolm Jenkins and Chris Long of the Philadelphia Eagles; Mark Herzlich of the New York Giants; Russell Okung of the Los Angeles Chargers; Kenny Stills, Julius Thomas, and Michael Thomas of the Miami Dolphins; former player Anquan Boldin; and executive director DeMaurice Smith and president Eric Winston of the NFLPA. Notice any names missing from that list? I’ll give you a hint: he’s the one that started the movement that eventually led to this meeting. That’s right, no Colin Kaepernick. The free agent quarterback was invited (at least by the players’ side), but he chose not to attend the meeting because of, according to his lawyer, push back from the NFL side. “Colin Kaepernick was not invited to attend today’s meeting by any official from the NFL or any team executives,” said Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Geragos. “Other players wanted him present and have asked that he attend the next meeting with the goal of forging a lasting and faithful consensus around these issues. Mr. Kaepernick is open to future participation in these important discussions.” Kaepernick has become a sort of de facto leader of this entire movement simply by starting it. He’s not an active public speaker about discrimination or overly involved in community efforts to address it, but he did get people talking about it, making him the face of the movement. While the national anthem protests didn’t come up and Goodell announced there will be no change to the league’s policy for now (promoting another tweet from President Donald Trump), Kaepernick was discussed. “I did bring up in the meeting how this started with him,” said 49ers safety Eric Reid. “And we need to get the messaging straight surrounding him. They heard me, and they agreed.” While it isn’t clear what exactly the owners and players discussed around Kaepernick, both sides acknowledged that this was only the beginning. One meeting isn’t going to stop the protests, but it’s a step in the right direction of ensuring the players have their grievances heard. “This is a long-term project, if you want to call it that,” said Reid. “There wasn’t much that was going to happen in a two-hour meeting. We are going to continue to meet, continue to have dialogue, and figure out a way to get these issues on track. We started [kneeling] to raise awareness and to effectuate change. We’re on the path to make the change we think we can make; we are just not there yet.” Yay! Real progress! What a time to be alive!

10 Shows to Binge in the Latest Golden Age of TV
.As someone obsessed with TV shows, I was pleased with the winners from last night’s 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards (full winner list here). With that, I have decided to come up with a list of 10 MUST-WATCH shows worth binging. Each show in the list comes with a binge clock from bingeclock.com, which is the site that tells you how many hours you need to binge a particular show.
Binge culture has brought us another golden age of TV. I had a hard time compiling this list because there are a ton of other shows that I have excluded, but if I had to recommend 10 shows that people should religiously watch, it would be these:
1. If you want a less depressing version of politics: Veep (HBO)
Binge Clock: 1 day 5 hours (Season 1 to 6, final season upcoming)
Even if you are not privy to Washington politics, you will love Veep because the jokes are on point. Julia Louis Dreyfus is a powerhouse comedienne, having won Emmys across three shows (Seinfeld, New Adventures for Old Christine, and Veep). Last night’s award set her a record for not only winning the most number of Best Actress trophies (Seven!), but also winning the most Emmys playing the same character (Six in a row!)
As one friend puts it, “Everyone thinks Washington politics is like House of Cards but really everyone over there is fumbling like Veep.” These days, it’s getting harder and harder to differentiate which is the parody of the other – Veep or Trump’s White House.
A bonus you might be interested in: Julia Louis Dreyfus and Joe Biden team up together for a short during the 2014 White House Correspondent’s Dinner.
youtube
2. All-around feel good comedy: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)
Binge Clock: 18 hours 12 minutes (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 upcoming)
You probably have seen Titus gifs around the internet.
Co-creator Tina Fey originally planned to air the show on NBC as a successor to her critically-acclaimed hit 30 Rock (which you should totally binge by the way), but instead Netflix poached this show. Aside from the tons and tons of references, some of the actors were also from 30 Rock, such as Jane Krakowski (supporting actress) and Tituss Burgess (occasional guest star). Tina Fey herself shows up in some of the episodes as Kimmy’s therapist.
The title of the show explains it all – Kimmy Schmidt is unbreakable because she manages to live life in New York City even after being kidnapped by a cult leader and trapped in a bunk for 10 years. The opening sequence is one of my most favorite sequences of all time, and I never skip it.
youtube
Personal favorite? Season 3 Episode 2. Titus doing Lemonade will make you forget all your problems.
youtube
3. Show some Filipino-American pride: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)
Binge Clock: 1 day 7 hours (Season 1 and 2, Season 3 coming this fall)
Speaking of opening sequences, I also love both Season 1 and 2 opening sequences of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Again, the title of the show explains it all. Rebecca Bunch was a successful lawyer in NYC but decided to move to suburban California after serendipitously meeting her teen flame Josh Chan and spends the rest of the show obsessing over how to get him back. Given that this is California, Josh Chan is played by a Filipino-American actor (Vincent Rodriguez III). The opening sequence pretty much summarizes the premise:
youtube
Because the head writer, Rene Gube, is also Filipino-American, the show is littered with Filipino cultural references. Personal favorite: Season 1 Episode 5. Rebecca is invited to a Filipino thanksgiving and she serves up some dinuguan (pork blood stewed in vinegar) to impress the family (video below). The show is a comedy musical – you will have LSS with songs like “The Sexy Getting Ready Song.” Season 1 finale also features Filipino Broadway pride Lea Salonga.
youtube
4. All-around awesomeness: Master of None (Netflix)
Binge Clock: 10 hours (Season 1 and 2, hopefully Season 3 comes sooner!)
Speaking of Asian Americans, praise Aziz Anzari for this show. I was lukewarm to Aziz on Parks and Recreation (which you should totally binge by the way!) but I am obsessed with him on Master of None. Each episode is a standalone mini-movie: the title of the show is in reference to the phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none.”
Personal favorites (and also both Emmy winners): Season 1 Episode 2 Parents and Season 2 Episode 8 Thanksgiving. In Parents, Aziz’s real life parents make a cameo as the parents of Dev Shah, Aziz’s character, as the episode discusses intergenerational issues in immigrant families. Thanksgiving features the coming out story of Denise, played by Lena Waithe, who is a black queer woman.
Aziz takes time writing these episodes. Season 2, which was released earlier this year, came two years after Season 1. Netflix greenlighted Season 3, but time can only tell when that is coming!
5. The meta-telenovela: Jane the Virgin (The CW)
Binge Clock: 2 days 16 hours (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 coming this fall)
This show is so popular in the Philippines that major network ABS-CBN dubbed the first two seasons and showed it on primetime. The show has this classic telenovela feel, but poignantly makes fun of all of the stereotypes while still coming up with a coherent romantic comedy.
The premise is Jane, who has never had sex in her life being raised strictly as a Catholic in a Hispanic immigrant family, gets accidentally artificially inseminated with Rafael’s sperm during a routine gynecology check-up. By the end of Season 1, you will choose sides, are you Team Baby Daddy (Team Rafael) or Team Boyfriend (Team Michael)?
But beyond the love triangle, this show is psychologically smart. It deals with heartbreak, and various levels of losses in a way that’s endearing while also very educational. My personal favorite episode is when Jane finally loses her virginity in Season 3 – I won’t tell which episode exactly!
6. The news explainer: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
Binge Clock: 2 days 8 hours (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 ongoing)
Jon Stewart has mentored a lot of correspondents on the Daily Show, and they have since starred in their own late night shows, such as Stephen Colbert (who starred in the highly successful Colbert Report on Comedy Central and now succeeds David Letterman on the Late Show at CBS) and Samantha Bee (her show Full Frontal is on TBS). Trevor Noah may have been Jon Stewart’s successor on The Daily Show (I also love Trevor Noah by the way), but the real successor to Jon Stewart is John Oliver.
Every Sunday on late night, John Oliver goes on a 20 or 30-minute rant about an issue that you might not be aware and you will care about it after. The monologues are available for free on the show’s YouTube channel (YAY!) which you can access here.
7. This is too real: Black Mirror (Channel 4, then moved to Netflix)
Binge Clock: 12 hours 21 minutes (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 upcoming)
Black Mirror is an allusion to the black mirrors of our smartphone/laptop/tablet screens. Each episode is a TV movie in itself, dealing with at least one ethical issue on the future of technology. It used to air on Channel 4 in the UK, where 7 episodes were successfully aired, but Netflix picked it up and ordered 6 episodes for Season 3, and another 6 coming soon.
My personal favorite is Season 3 Episode 4 San Junipero – I won’t even spoil you any details, just watch it please. I am so glad it won the two Emmy Awards it was nominated for.
8. The most underrated actress in my lifetime is in this show: Orphan Black (BBC America)
Binge Clock: 2 days 2 hours (5 Seasons, just ended over the summer)
Tatiana Maslany deserves far more recognition than what she is getting now. After getting snubbed at the Emmys for Best Drama Actress during the first three seasons, she got her due last year when she won the award, having only been nominated for the first time that year. She plays more than a dozen characters on the show, as the show revolves around life of clones under codename Project Leda.
The main 6 are shown above. Screengrab from BBC America YouTube channel. Watch the Meet The Clones video here.
The fifth and final season just ended over the summer, so for those who love to binge after the shows end, this is perfect for you.
9. Breakout comedy star: Atlanta (FX)
Binge Clock: 6 hours, 30 minutes (Season 1, Season 2 upcoming)
Donald Glover – I don’t even know where to begin explaining how awesome he is. You may love him as Childish Gambino, his musical alterego, or his character on Community (NBC, then later Yahoo! Screen). Atlanta is primarily Danny’s brainchild, where he stars, directs, and writes most of the episodes, similar to how Aziz Anzari is with Master of None.
The show revolves around Glover’s character, Alfred Miles, an up-and-coming rap artist trying to make his way into the music industry in Atlanta. I personally have not watched it yet as of date, but it is on top of my to-watch list. After winning multiple Emmy awards last night, I better make time for this.
10. Breakout drama star: The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
Binge clock: 10 hours (Season 1, Season 2 upcoming)
Digital platforms are getting more and more savvy when competing with traditional network and cable TV. Netflix has been investing hundreds and millions of dollars producing hundreds of original content (and a lot of good ones as you can see in my list), while Amazon Prime and Hulu are following the same suit. Amazon Prime has Transparent as its centerpiece (which you should totally binge also by the way), while Hulu has found theirs recently with The Handmaid’s Tale. The show bagged a lot of awards in the Emmys this year.
The show is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name. The premise is about a dystopian future where woman are subjected as a slaves in order to address the plummeting birth rate of the human race. Its main competition during the Emmys, Westworld (HBO), also talks about a dystopian future where the rich can live out their most disgusting and illegal desires on humanlike robots on a playground called Westworld (Yes, binge Westworld also please!)
As I have mentioned, there are a ton more shows, and I know a lot of you have them in mind. But these are my personal favorites, the last two of which I cannot wait to binge.

So I have two things to say. First of all I am loving Pushing Daisies again! I stopped at like s2e2 or something and I've started again and I'm enjoying it so much. This show is so awesome. Also it mentioned asexuals and androgynous people so yay! Second somebody teach me to draw Josh Washington he's adorable and I want one. I need to draw all my ideas about him and Chris and his friends because I want Josh to be happy because the ending was horrible and it's not fair. I tried drawing and I did hair and I think I did good on 3/4 because one of them was horrible but the others were nice. I'm gonna try. Not now. Later. But still. If anyone wants to help feel free.

Who Replaces Bryan Colangelo?
It’s over.
Lord have mercy. I’m just glad we’re moving this thing forward.
If you listened to yesterday’s press conference with Brett Brown and Josh Harris, you heard them say that there will be no hard deadline on the hiring of a new general manager. One month? Six weeks? Who knows.
In my mind, I think you give yourself 4-5 weeks to get this done, which would allow Brown to run the draft process, then cede free agency and contract negotiations to the new player-personnel executive, who comes in during the first week of July. I don’t know if there’s enough time to conduct a proper search and make a choice by July 1st, but this is priority number one. You gotta get it started and finished right now, and you bet your arse people are lining up to take a job where you would be overseeing two superstar players with a good chunk of assets and plenty of cap room.
The Sixers’ GM role is very attractive.
Here’s a list of names that come to mind:
David Griffin
Griffin is the former Cleveland GM, the trendy pick because of his relationship with LeBron James. The thought is that you bring him in, he brings LeBron in, and the winning commences.
And before I go any further, I think you have to define what you’re looking for in a GM. Do you want a guy who can lure superstar free agents, someone with connections? Or do you think LeBron and Paul George are making their decisions based solely on the players and the coach? I think it’s the latter, though the former does help. If I’m a free agent looking for a new team, I’m thinking, “hmm.. yes… I would like to earn $25 million playing alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.”
Or – do you look for an assistant GM who is worthy of promotion and keep building for the long term? Do you carry this thing forward with a long view or go for broke right now? It’s something to think about.
Anyway, back to Griffin, who spent just three years in Cleveland, coming to Ohio in 2014 after many years in Phoenix, serving as “senior vice president of basketball operations” before taking the Cavs’ gig. They won a title during his time at the helm, though the list of moves he made does have some question marks.
For starters, he fired Mike Brown and brought in David Blatt, who didn’t work out in Cleveland despite starting 30-11 in his second season. Blatt eventually gave way to Tyronn Lue. Griffin drafted Andrew Wiggins, then executed the trade that sent Wiggins to Minnesota and Kevin Love to Cleveland. Philly was a third party in the deal. He later kickstarted a struggling team when he shipped out Dion Waiters, Alex Kirk, Lou Amundson, and a 2nd round pick for Iman Shumpert, JR Smith, and a protected first rounder. He sent that pick and another first rounder to Denver for Timofey Mozgov. Smith and Tristan Thompson later got long term deals.
If you bring Griffin in, and assuming LeBron comes with him, that’s what you’re getting – a “win now” type of mentality with some risk. The timeline shrinks. You’re looking at more dodgy moves to try to get that title sooner rather than later, while possibly jeopardizing long term stability.
So if that’s your thing, a ring at any cost, the Griffin/LeBron strategy is your kind of move.
Sam Hinkie
Here’s the thing with Hinkie – if you want him to come back, is it because you truly feel like he’s the right guy for the job? Or does sentimentality influence the thought process? Does Hinkie’s cult-hero status bring along feelings of nostalgia?
I asked that question on Twitter and here’s a sampling of the response:
I do because I think his whole process was leading to this summer. I don’t think he would have taken fultz. It was about getting the pieces in play and signing 1 or 2 free agents. This was the off-season he did the tank for
— Brian Fioretti (@Instigatorz889) June 8, 2018
If anything, the question might be does he deserve to see it through? For process believers, the answer is yes. There’s no evidence to suggest he will or will not be a good GM for a team developing current talent.
— Vince Piotti (@vincepiotti) June 8, 2018
I think Hinkie is a victim of his success—there are no more Vlade Divac types to fleece, and the Hinkie special contracts alienated agents. And the completion phase of the process requires different skills from the asset-accumulation phase.
— Michael Riccardi (@MAR1962) June 8, 2018
Did Hinkie deserve a chance to see this through? I don’t know. I wasn’t on the beat back then, but the Sixers were compiling talent and turning the corner slowly. I think that was apparent. The knock was always this idea that Hinkie was excellent at tearing it down, acquiring assets, and starting the rebuild, but did he have the skills to negotiate with agents and lure star players to town? Was he enough of a “basketball” guy or was he a corny “data” guy?
I don’t know. I have no clue. I don’t think anybody really knows.
But you can’t just say, “yay Hinkie! let’s complete the process!” You have to remove emotion from it. You have to axe the sentimentality. If the players trust Hinkie and have a good relationship, fine, but so what? Is that going to make Embiid cut down on his turnovers? Probably not.
The gig is different than the one Hinkie left two years ago. We don’t have any proof that he can finish the job, but there’s also nothing suggesting he can’t get it done. Personally, I just feel like the ship has sailed. The Hinkie story is written in stone, and I could see the NBA getting salty and combative again if the Sixers wanted to down that road. I think you’ve just gotta turn the page on Sam and let it be. Bringing him back would just reignite the BS conflict between pro-Process and anti-Process fans, and we’re trying to move this thing forward, not relive all of that.
Marc Eversley
Promote from within?
Eversley is the Sixers’ Vice President of Player Personnel dating back two years now. He held a similar role under Colangelo in Toronto and eventually left that post to take a “Vice President of Scouting” gig with the Wizards.
He held that job from 2013 to 2016 under longtime President Ernie Grunfeld and VP Tommy Sheppard. During that span, Washington drafted Otto Porter and Jerian Grant and Kelly Oubre and hired Scott Brooks as head coach. They assembled a pretty good core that has probably underachieved over the years.
It’s hard to say how much of a role Eversley played in all of that, or with Raptors’ moves from 2006 to 2013. But there’s no lack of experience there. Eversley has been around the league for 12+ seasons now and held significant jobs along the way. I don’t know if people view him as a guy who comes from the “Colangelo tree” per se, since he spent a lot of time with him in Toronto and came to Philly to work with him. I don’t know if there’s a stigma attached, or if people think he learned from Colangelo and would be the same type of executive. I don’t think that’s the case, and I think fans and media would probably create some separation there, but it certainly doesn’t help his case. The Colangelo connection feels like an unfortunate sidebar. I’d hope people wouldn’t lump him in there and just treat him as his own person.
As for the other Sixers’ player-personnel executives, I think Ned Cohen might get an interview, but he doesn’t have as much team-specific experience as Eversley. He was the NBA’s Associate VP of Basketball Operations before coming to Philly, so his resume is more league-oriented, obviously. Alex Rucker, the VP of Analytics and Strategy, would probably be third in line behind Eversley and Cohen. I think some companies do the formal thing where you interview your own people with no intent to promote them, but you go through the process anyway and everybody gets the experience of doing a run through for future interviews.
Gersson Rosas
Rosas is working alongside Daryl Morey as the Rockets’ Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations
He had a brief, three month stint in Dallas with Donnie Nelson but came back to Houston after disputes over his role with the team. Rosas also has GM experience running the Rocket’s G-League affiliate.
From his linkedin page:
“In addition to his duties with the Rockets, Rosas previously served as the General Manager of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, which is Houston’s single-affiliation NBA Development League partner. In his four full seasons as Rio Grande Valley’s GM, the Vipers won NBA D-League Championships in the 2009-10 and 2012-13 seasons, while reaching three D-League Finals in four years.”
Morey is well-respected around the league, so it’s only natural that one of the guys who works closely with him would be a popular name. Rosas was a candidate for the Hornets gig that went to Mitch Kupchak. He also apparently removed himself from consideration for the Pistons’ GM job.
Rosas could have taken a better gig at this point in his career, so it seems like he’s calculated in making the right decision moving forward. The Sixers’ job is attractive, much more than Detroit or Charlotte, yes? When you look at how Morey has assembled that Houston team, and the fact that a Chris Paul injury probably made the difference in a title vs. a game 7 conference finals loss, you’d have to say that there’s a pedigree and a “winning culture” that Rosas is attached to.
Mike Zarren
Danny Ainge fan? How about approaching his assistant general manager?
This would be a very Rosas-esque hiring, bringing in the #2 from a winning club.
Zarren is another “unpaid intern to executive” story. He’s a Boston guy and a former season ticket holder and blah blah blah. So the question is whether dude even has any desire to leave in the first place, or just assume the top dog role when Ainge moves on. When does that happen? How long would Zarren be okay with being second-in-command? What if that goes on and on and on?
He was there when Ainge pulled off the blockbuster move with the Nets in 2013. He was there when Ainge got an extra first rounder out of the Sixers and still wound up with Jayson Tatum. He knows how to build a strong roster and keep things moving forward.
For what it’s worth Zarren reportedly had the Sixers’ gig offered to him back in 2013, but declined:
“I don’t know all the details, but I know there was strong interest in Mike from Philly,” president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told the Boston Herald at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. “I don’t know why (he turned it down). You’ll have to ask him.”
Zarren is an advanced statistics guy with some Hinkie similarities. But he’s also been around the block and probably wouldn’t have any issue with agent relations or contract negotiations or the human side of things.
If he turned down the gig back then, I don’t know if he’d want it now, unless you’re sold on the core of Embiid/Simmons and ready to move out of Ainge’s shadow and into your own spotlight.
Brian Wright
Wright is the Spurs’ assistant GM and has been in the role since 2016.
He didn’t cross paths with Brown there, but the common thought is that anyone related to the Spurs and R.C. Buford is a worthy hire. Wright is in his mid-thirties, a relatively young guy who doesn’t have a ton of experience, so his candidacy would be a long-shot I’d think.
Danny Ferry
I know, I know, the incident with the racist language from a few years back. That might be a total non-starter in and of itself, then you consider that the Sixers are coming off a scandal of their own. It would be terrible optics. (FYI Ferry was eventually cleared).
But there’s a track record of success and a Brett Brown connection dating back to the San Antonio days. There’s this from 2016:
Sources: Sixers have been discussing two possible candidates to share "partnership" with Hinkie: Bryan Colangelo and Danny Ferry.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) April 7, 2016
And this from 2012:
Sources also say that Danny Ferry and the Sixers is very real too… talks on going
— Steve Kyler (@stevekylerNBA) June 16, 2012
There were flirtations with Ferry in the past. I don’t know if the incident from a few years back disqualifies him from the start, but it’s probably a risky road to go down.
Joe Dumars
I’m only listing him here for the sake of conversation. I don’t see him popping up on a lot of other lists. Stephen A. brought up his name this morning on First Take, and after initially laughing, I sort of came back around and said “hmm…”
Here’s the thing, Dumars built the 2004 title-winning Pistons squad, a team that went to the Eastern Conference finals six straight years. They won 73 playoff games during his tenure. I think his name popped up as a candidate for the Hawks’ GM job a year ago, but otherwise you don’t hear a lot about him these days.
He did have a lot of clunkers, too. Darko Milicic? Rodney White? Trading Chauncey Billups? Huge deals for Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva? He also went through coaches in rapid fire fashion.
Not inspiring, but listen, those Pistons teams of the aughts were pretty damn good. It’s something to think about if you’re okay with a “retread” type of hire.
Time’s yours.
