So I saw the recent anime anniversary PV that the Digimon Partners Youtube channel put out and was honestly surprised when they breezed past everything after Frontier lol. I know that Toei/Bandai has a bias for the first four series in terms of celebrations and merch (even then that’s debatable for Frontier); but are there any examples of them doing modern merch for the newer series like Savers or Xros Wars (barring the TCG ofc)?

Well, the anniversary in question came with this nice key visual that they're now making merch out of as part of a gachapon lineup with every TV series:

And even putting the 25th anniversary stuff aside, they have. If you go to the Digimon section of the Toei shop and scroll down, you can narrow it down by series. Everything listed in the sections for Savers and after is from 2020 or later. Of course, a lot of this is recent -- it's a byproduct of them getting much better at making efforts to acknowledge non-Adventure ever since there was an overhaul of IP-related direction back in 2020 (it hasn't been super publicized since it's mainly stuff to do with IP management in the background, but it's been a thing).

The problem is, it is a known fact that anything after Frontier does not sell (and even Frontier is on thin ice). The otedama (mini-plushes) for Savers, Xros Wars, and Appmon were the result of a poll held on Digimon Partners for what kind of later-series merch people wanted to see, because they really cannot be certain that they're actually going to be able to make enough to not turn out a loss on these. So in the end, I'll take this over the neverending "Adventure and tri. are the only things that exist" we had during the late 2010s.

They're not snubbing the later series because they don't care, it's just that we're still at the point where most average people don't even know what a Shoutmon is! (Well, except TCG players.) When that aforementioned gachapon was announced, one of the people in my group chat sadly pointed out that since every series shown in it has an equal chance of being pulled, more than 50% of people who play the gacha are going to get something after Frontier and say "I have no idea what this is, I wasted my money on a bad pull." So unless something can be done about the current state of things where you have to forcibly insert later-series stuff into random merch draws to get people to buy them, I can't really expect too much.

Anyway, Savers is over, now onto Xros Wars.

I won't be going over Appmon, since it is own subfranchise. So after Xros Wars, including Hunters, we will move to Adventure reboot.

Xros Wars will take longer, since it is three seasons (a novelty, as other Series have been all single season long), with the third season, Hunters, effectively being its own sub-series. So we will take each season on its own, like the YGO series.

Now for the general things about Xros Wars:

**This is the second major time Digimon TCG was revived, though in Xros Wars, this was in the context of Super Digica Taisen arcade games, which were not released to the West.

**Because of the arcade focus, and TCG revival, as well as overall merchandising, Xros Wars, like Frontier, focuses on the collectible aspect of Digimon, rather than the raising aspect of Digimon.

**As such, in Xros Wars, there are no Evolutionary Levels. Any Digimon can theoretically beat any other Digimon. Evolutions themselves will be reintroduced, for obvious reasons, and retroactively Xros Wars era Digimon will be given Evolutionary Levels (some will be given during the Xros Wars, since many Digimon introduced around the show don't have much to do with the show itself).

**Because of the merch focus, as YouTuber Billiam notes, many Digimon have mechanical looks to them, even if they are bestial. This ties into the Xrossing mechanic, since each Digimon detachable parts that can be recognisable on a DigiXros form.

**The overall artstyle will try to emulate earlier Series, but not have the same character designers, and tropes. Differences, while subtle, are noticeably there.

**Because of the "war" aspect, there are many recurring characters in these seasons, though only a small number of them matter a lot.

**There aren't that many Xros Wars era video games, surprisingly enough. Most of the video games between this era, and Adventure reboot are around Appmon era, and many of the games released during this era focus on Adventure era stuff instead. This is again mostly due to the arcade push.

Xros Wars era would be one of the bigger bumps of Digimon's popularity, bringing back some old fans, and bringing in many new ones due to simplified mechanics, and expanded lore. This era is the favourite of many people, and it is one of the few periods where new concepts could, temporarily, rival Adventure era stuff. Due to the poor reception of Hunters, it didn't last long, but it is notable nonetheless.

Dubbing of this Series apparently had many interesting controversies, but we won't go over the dub. The original had obvious production issues, as more prominently seen in Hunters, but a lot of those come from the new status quo.

Xros Wars manga, despite having most of the same cast, is completely disconnected from the animé, but much like the GX manga, many people prefer it over the animé, and it gets decent amount of promotion by Bandai due to its international popularity. We won't discuss that a lot either.

Love people finding out about the Xros Wars manga through the TCG, questionable writing choices aside, it's like a clear love letter to the franchise, and so many digimon get random evolutions that otherwise wouldn't've

I get that shit isn't coming out every day, and a lot is aimed at children (reasonably, kinda). But we're talking about a franchise who fell out of the Western public consciousness when the abomination that is Frontier was airing (2003 --- 21 years ago! it can drink!), and fell out of the Japanese public consciousness when the abomination that is Xros Wars (2010 --- still 15 years ago) was airing.

The people who made it are, well. RIP Koji Wada. Both Kakudo and Sakamoto (Agumon's voice actress) were born in 1959. 65 years old.

It's literally being kept alive out of love by people who grew up with Adventure as kids. Digimon Comic especially, as a concept, kind of makes me tear up.

The fact that we're still getting what we're getting is a miracle. I'm actually not sure what more you can ask for, other than a currently-airing anime series.

The thing about being a digimon fan is that bandai namco and toei entertainment love hitting you with sticks if you even think they're gonna touch any of the IPs other than adventure or make more games (BANDAI SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OPEN) and if they ever do, the quality of whatever the hell they make will not be ensured (i am so tired)
