En la cosmovisión azteca, el xoloitzcuintle era un perro especial y venerado que desempeñaba un papel fundamental como guía de las almas al Mictlán, el inframundo.

Regalo de Xólotl. Se consideraba que el xoloitzcuintle era un regalo del dios Xólotl, el dios de la muerte, para guiar a las almas de los difuntos.  

Asociación con Xólotl. Los xoloitzcuintles estaban asociados con Xólotl, por lo que se les debía ser bondadosos para tener una muerte agradecida y sin sufrimiento.  

Guardianes de espíritus. Se les veneraba como guardianes de los espíritus de los fallecidos.  

Manchas. Se decía que si el xoloitzcuintle tenía manchas, es que ya había guiado a varias almas.
