Doggust 2023 -Day: 3 -Breed: Xolo -Name: Myth -Story: Myth escaped from an animal testing laboratory. She stays in the shadows and avoids humans at all costs. She is calm and collected but always calculating her next move. Myth was an old character I created on August 10, 2012. SHE IS 11 YEARS OLD!?! Can you tell a teenager wrote her broody story? ;)
This year for Doggust I am making one dog character a day (or reviving an old character) from the official Doggust prompts. Dogs have always been one of my biggest inspirations. From the vastness of the breeds, the expressive features and their amazing antics, they are the perfect subject to draw as a cartoon! Pet portrait commissions are open!

#repost @cruizberman-blog @cruizberman Christian Ruiz Berman (New York City, USA, b. Mexico City, 1982-). First image is Double Xolotl, Acrylic on panel, 16”x20”, 2021. Second image is Old dogs rarely change their spots, Acrylic on panel, 16”x20”, 2022. I am a fan of the animal representation, particularly of canines, in this artist's work. Thanks to @clementsauvoy for the tip.

I'm happy to ramble about xolos! The short answer is yes, they have many primitive traits. Xolo's are athletic dogs and they do need to have some space to get that energy out. Walks may not be required if you're creative or have property, but exercise is required.
Xolo dogs absolutely retain a lot of "primitive" traits. Even with the selective breeding measures that had to take place to bring the breed back from the brink of extinction, they don't have any specific breed purpose in them like a shepherd, pointer, LGD, etc. Nor do they have a biddable, super affectionate temperament like your average companion breed. Xolos, in general, are dogs with a high prey drive, low biddability, and an aloofness to strangers. They are very alert and prone to alert barking. They are quite vocal in general and make a lot of various vocalizations to communicate their feelings. They learn patterns very quickly and will absolutely try to take advantage of a perceived pattern in a way that is energetically advantageous for them (e.g. skipping steps in a training routine to reach the end behavior faster and therefore reinforcement faster.) Xolos in general have a very strong denning drive. My boy will nest on anything. Literally anything is better than his body being directly on the ground, including a trash bag or my work papers. He has nested on them before. And he displays very long, elaborate nesting behaviors of completely shifting blankets, manipulating them with his mouth, etc to make a perfect nest. Xolos also love to self soothe by rubbing on things way more than any other breed I've seen. Like they love to rub on furniture and stairs even though they don't seem to have any signs of itching or allergies. They just... Like to rub their bodies all along things. While xolos form incredibly deep bonds with their people, they also... Really care only about their own interests. They're not biddable dogs. Tzapo definitely has times where he does not give a crap about me or my existence. I make sure he gets his needs met and he maintains being a good service dog. But his needs are his priority way above mine in a way I've never seen in any other dog I've worked with. He adores me to no end but his needs come first. Once those are met then he works for me. It's simple and it works because when his needs are met he's a laser focused adoring little dog who takes excellent care of me. He makes me a better dog handler and trainer by being his sassy little unbiddable self.
One of those needs is physical movement. While xolos can be content to be snuggly couch potatoes, this comes after their needs are met. Tzapo, if he doesn't meet his needs, will make trouble. He will find something naughty to run off with like a shoe to get my attention. Or he will suddenly be on the nightstand. Or he makes weird little huffing groaning complaining sounds at me. He needs to move. And the problem is... Xolos are good escape artists. He has never even tried to escape from my yard but he apparently escaped twice from his breeder. He climbed chain link and took off. This isn't that unusual for xolos due to how dextrous their toes are. So if you don't meet their movement needs you may have an escapee problem.
However, if you have a big enough yard with a good fence you might be able to meet a xolos movement needs especially with an older dog. Older xolos are definitely more inclined to bask and lounge with you. A well fenced and good sized yard may suffice for a smaller and/or older dog. If you use the yard smartly and put further enrichment in it, like hiding food for them to find or adding a sniff garden etc, you could probably manage a toy xolo's activity needs without having to do lots of walks. Additionally, you could use a longline so you don't have to do as much walking about in a safe open area while your dog explores relatively freely. If you can manage one or both of these, you might be just fine especially if you provide a lot in the way of training and other mental stimulation. In any case, I would definitely recommend a toy Xolo if amount of walking is a concern.
Xolo's are not the easiest dog and not recommended for a lot of people due to their quirky, primitive breed nature combined with being athletic little runners. I love them but they're definitely not a good fit for everyone by a long shot. They can get creatively mischievous very quickly if bored and under exercised. With their alert nature, I really don't recommend them for apartment living (hello noise complaint calls re the alert barking). But they're amazingly sweet and the most attentive friend if you can meet their needs.
Do you know much about Xoloitzcuintli dogs? Such as do they retain a lot of primitive behaviors or if they would be suitable as a companion for an owner with limited physical ability that would limit things such as taking on walks?
Doesn't someone on here have a xolo they use as a service dog?
