This is one of those hella complicated, hella melodramatic rollercoaster of a ride historical cdrama’s. It’s so much fun, yet exhausting at times too. It does take a handful of episodes to fully get into, but once you do, if you’re into this type of genre, since this won’t be everyones cup of tea, you’ll be fully hooked. The female lead has the best storyline and character growth throughout even though she’d could be a bit obtuse at times but no more worse then her counterpart. The main male lead I wanted to throttle him and don’t get me started on the ‘brother’. All the torture he put his ‘sister’ through. Ugh. In the end though, with all the tragedies, it made a excellent melodramatic drama.

So I was looking for tags on the cdrama "The Mermaid's Pearl" but could not find one. I wonder why is that?

Admittedly, this one is not on par with most dramas I watch. The rating on the internet is also low. I think I know why.

But if you're looking for cuteness and fluff with scenes that make you smile like hot chocolate and if you don't care much about actresses crying without tears (aka not so great acting) and bad directing skills and cuts, this could be just it.

On to how I found this. So I was looking for a quick cdrama to binge. When too tired afterwork, I have this guilty pleasure of reading through plots, watching the first few eps. Then when I get the gist, I'll leisurely fast forward or move eps looking for cute or fun scenes. You know, like living leisurely through the characters (for the sake of feeling things and pretending you got a life outside work and home).

Plot wise, tbh, I skipped a lot on this one. The plot itself is pretty simple. Mermaid girl (FL) left water to look for her kidnapped father. The ML is a rich young man who is known as a detective. He is also sick and they believe finding a mermaid will help cure him. She agreed because he has a lot of food (being rich and all) and he also might be able to help her find her dad.

Suspecting she's a mermaid (kinda hard not to) when she literally threw her pearls at him when they first met, he decided to keep her by his side.

So murder mysteries happen along the way and the guy has a fangirl/fiancee who wants to marry him. The emperor is also looking for a way to live abnormally long and orders people to go on expeditions to look for mermaids to aid that quest.

That is basically the whole gist of it.

Cuteness wise, can I just say I love and adore how the ML cares for the FL? Like, she's like a fluffy bunny and he's the master who takes care of her. They are so cute together and he also is sensitive to his own feelings so there's not much waiting. Their scenes make me laugh and just smile, thinking I want to be loved the way he loves her. : ) 🩷 Plus, it's comedy XD

At first he was telling her to stay away from him because she has no boundaries. But all too soon, he just came to accept how trusting and comfortable she is with him. He also gets jealous easily lol.

In this scene for instance, she literally just fell asleep using his hand as a pillow (like a cat) and he lets her. #Fluff

Acting wise, the ML actor, Shi An, is actually pretty good. It's just that the cuts and the scenes they were acting in are really like you're watching students' made film where quality is not the focus. So tbh, I blame the director and writer and producers more than the actors. Or maybe, that is indeed their goal? Idk. If it is then they succeeded.

Watch it if you dare, but as I said, a lot of things about it are pretty crappy. So don't expect too much.

But bottomline, I still very much enjoyed the very short cute fluff scenes between the ML and FL. :) I even replay them (just the cute scenes) when I need a pick-me-up. So it isn't so bad. At least not for me.

*Crawling slowly across the floor* Peach.........Peaaachyyyyyyyy. There are so many details that I added to that man that it's hard to tell what I've already said and what I haven't! I have, however, just found a notation thing I did in my free time aaaages ago, which is basically how the other Peak Lords interact with Wei Qingwei! There is some mention of my OC peak lords (Shui Muyang/Qingbo -> Zui Xian, and Jiang Qingbai -> Ku Xing (I've just remembered I never edited that one post I made about her...)), so do with that what you will. (Also these were rough notes directly translated from a piece of paper and I can't be bothered to fix the formatting xoxo)

Wei Qingwei -> Makes the cool whip for Shui Muyang, who immediately decides that they must protect him and is there when he goes on his first mission with Yue Qingyuan ↳ Yue Qingyuan is immediately hit with the daddy/gege beam, leaving him flummoxed and trying not to cry for some reason -> Wei Qingwei admires Xuan Su next to a barely functioning Yue Qingyuan while Liu Qingge huffs & puffs in the background because Wei Qingwei is his gege ↳ Of course, they are all older than him, but nobody knows it -> Mu Qingfang's shizun does, but he's utter bollocks at his job so he just doesn't mention it -> Wei Qingwei's shifu knows as well; he thinks it's hilarious

More often than not, there's a fight to the death over who gets to hang out with Wei Qingwei -> Shang Qinghua is often most likely to win this (without participating) because there is so much he needs help with & Wei Qingwei will always help out

Wei Qingwei becomes endeared to Jiang Qingbai when he excitedly yaps to her about the different talismans they could build into weapons to make them stronger, all the while giving time for her to write down her responses and vowing to learn how to do sign language (even if he can't see very well)

Shen Jiu falls to Wei Qingwei's determination to befriend him -> man helps him catch up with the others' combat wise & is the one to lead to the caves where he finds Xiu Ya (also similar senses of crappy humour) ↳ Shen Jiu is also more likely to realise that Wei Qingwei is actually younger than him -> either remains as seeing Wei Qingwei as father/gege or is immediately like 'ah, Wei Qingwei is a kind, helpful didi who looks up to his gege' and then hits Wei Qingwei with the gege beam ↳ I like to think that, instead of Wei Qingwei getting hit with Shen Yuan's wife beam, he hits Shen Yuan with his didi beam because he just doesn't change how he acts around Shen Yuan even if Shen Jiu has changed ↳ When Shen Jiu gets his own body, Wei Qingwei gets two geges

Thinking about Zheng Yang in the Bad End offshoot for the Sword Spirits AU... (this is also assuming Xiu Ya managed to save Liu Qingge in the Lin Xing caves)

In a random town suffering from a plague, your wielder comes back, he's flourishing with a clearly demonic and irate sword, holding you in contempt as a piece of his former life that he failed to erase (both him and the sword spirit also keep glancing at your dad and smirking, WTF).

Turns out your former wielder is now the rising star of Huan Hua Palace and he doesn't even acknowledge you as his past sword and friend.

They incriminate and imprison baba's wielder, leaving you with the rest of Cang Qiong (probably in YQY & XS's hands because Shen Qingqiu distrusts him the least).

A few months pass, the sect leader leaves to 'Confront Huan Hua and retrieve Xiao Jiu.' He doesn't bring you with him, nor does he come back. The Bai Zhan War God plans to go there and avenge him, you manage to bargain with him to bring you alongside Cheng Luan.

When you finally arrive, you see a palace that's been devastated by an ongoing fight. Demonic, spiritual and resentful energies coalesce into two beings. One is Luo Binghe, gleaming at the other combatant, Xin Mo vibrating contently in his hand.

The other is a distorted version of your father, Xiu Ya. His energy twisted in so much anger and anguish that it's palpable from a li away. He's clearly losing, yet still on the offensive, single-minded in his goal to kill Binghe as the other is playfully weaving through every stab your father sends at him.

When the now Palace Master notices the War God, he ends his 'leisure' bout with Xiu Ya, sealing him back through a talisman array, and looks at you (you!! Not Liu Qingge, not Cheng Luan, you!!!!) with a wolfish smile.

Emperor of the Abyss

Focused Pair: Shen Yuan/Luo Binghe

Instead of escaping the Abyss just yet, Luo Binghe stays in the Abyss for 7 years. The extra two being of how he conquered the rest of the Abyss after gaining Xin Mo. (Xin Mo has a sentient form at times but also becomes a voice in Luo Binghe mind along with Meng Mo). After the 7 years are up he comes back into the mortal realm conquering it while being undercover as a Huan Hua disaple.

While exploring through the library, Luo Binghe finds a journal and learns about the death of his mother. He's anger at the Old Palace Master but can't do anything just yet. (Yet.)

Xin Mo is grinning at him from a mirror. A shadow like verison of himself. But more demonic. Shape fangs, shape nails, and even growing horns out of his head. The red demonic mark glows with qi.

The Ivory Mistress & The Demonic Conqueror (Heavily inspired by CRK)

Luo Binghe & Shen Yuan are reincarnations of Luo Binghe's ancestors; The Ivory Mistress Zhao Zhiyu & The Demonic Conqueror Wang Xing.

The story goes is that the Ivory Mistress lived on a mountain called the Golden Ivory Mountains. A place where life has blossomed for thousands of years. A maiden by the courtsy name of the Ivory Mistress takes care of the mountain. On a trip down the steep and narrow cliffs, the Ivory Mistress stumbles upon a injured person. The Ivory Mistress feels sympathy for the poor soul, taking them into their humble abound.

Unaware of dark red eyes following them.

Puppets Imitate Art

Pili employees are strong contenders for the funniest people on the planet and nowhere is this more apparent than their social media posts where they use Photoshop wizardry to put those puppets in situations. Here are some of my favorites, all referencing/parodying famous works of art:

Rembrandt: The Night Watch (1642)

The gang's all here in this recreation for Mie Tian Hai's birthday, complete with a cake for the birthday warlord. Shout-out to jester!Lin Xue Ya from the first movie as the drummer on the right.

Raphael: Tempi Madonna (1508)

Raphael did so many Madonna and Child paintings, it can be difficult to tell them apart but the castle in the background on the middle right gives this one away. Given what happened in canon, this one's kind of painful, but the parallels are undeniable.

Leonardo da Vinci: The Last Supper (c. 1495–1498)

The cast of Bewitching Melody of the West settles in for a recreation of this iconic piece, with Pili character Baili Binghong, the "father of Thunderbolt Fantasy", standing in for Christ.

me: hold on I gotta look something up real quick me, a few seconds later: yeah this is funny actually

It turns out Baili Binghong was Gen Urobuchi's favorite character from the Pili main series, and when Pili killed him off, Urobuchi was stunned, which in turn led to the creation of Thunderbolt Fantasy. RIP, Baili Binghong; thanks for taking one for the team!

For additional emphasis, Pili originally dropped this one on Thanksgiving, which is why there's turkey and pie... except for Baili Binghong, who has a bento (Pili slang for character death) in preparation for his ascent to Puppet Heaven.

There's so much going on here, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I love that the good guys and bad guys are on opposite sides of the table, and also Lin Xue Ya's pose is especially funny.

Gustav Klimt: The Kiss (c. 1907)

Lou Zhen Jie embraces Seven Blasphemous Deaths with fervent devotion surrounded by gold and flowers. This is less of a direct recreation than a reference, as evidenced by the golden halo around Lou Zhen Jie's head, which would not be out of place in a medieval manuscript (one of Klimt's influences/inspirations for the original piece).

Alphonse Mucha: F. Champenois Imprimeur-Éditeur (1897)

There are a number of different riffs of this Mucha print featuring different characters, all of which are variations on the same basic theme, but I picked this one with Mu Tian Ming because it was originally posted to promote an exhibit on Mucha's influence on Japanese manga artists, thus bringing the conversation full circle.

Michelangelo: The Creation of Adam (c. 1512)

Huo Shi Ming Huang desires god-like powers and here he gets his wish, bringing life to.... Lin Xue Ya?? No way this won't backfire on him, hahaha. Shout out to Xing Hai, Ba Wang Yu, and Hua Wu Zong as the attending "angels".

(As an aside, this is at least the third time this particular painting has been referenced in media originally written by Gen Urobuchi, the first two being Madoka Magica and Rusty Rabbit, where they are mentioned directly in-text as opposed to extracanonical material. I can't decide if it's funnier if Pili did this on purpose or if it's just a coincidence.)

Sorry its so late buf i am in an Edling mood tonight and I will never stop thinking about the idea of how theyre the epitome of right person wrong time.

(obviously in a context of like fandom shenannigans where canon events arent 100% set in stone like edling arent canon but also idc !! they are to me! im ignoring it let me be insane) ANYWAY

Even if they wanted to be together post promised day Ling has all the responsibilities of Xing and his clan and Edward would never hold him back from that for a second. Im of the opinion that brotherhood Edward feels a lot of guilt for wanting love from the people around him particularly those he sees as good (winry, alphonse, etc) especially if hes done things hes perceived as hurting them (maes’ death, the transmutation, etc etc). Which is why I think Edward connects with Ling so well cayse he doesnt carry the weight of a lot if his past mistakes, and then when the stone happens its like goddamn it i roped this guy into my shit again. Like i dont know Edward doesnt really dedicate himself so fully to people outside of winry and ed a lot so its interesting like!!

He cares about a lot of people like the majority of the allied cast and we see him be openly affectionate towards Nina and Hughes pre their deaths but I think Ling is the only person hes ever decided to stick with WITHOUT alphonse? I may be wrong but the whole sure Ill stay with you and trust my brother and Winry to stay safe and follow you around the outskirts of the east for a week till the promised day to protect my new friend is so??? what?? huh???

But anyone my point is post promised day Edward cant really ever see a future with Ling because of all the responsibility Ling holds outside of him and its veyr tragic imo like especially because in a different scenario if Ling didnt have those responsibilities and Edward wasn’t so dedicated to the people around him to a fault of never thinking about his own desires I think they could have the possibility of a future.

Like I have read a lot of fanfiction abiut Ed traveling to Xing and living with him there but?? I realistically cant see him ever doing that just solely because Edward is not the type of person to settle down! like its my one and only criticism of the fma manga is that I cannot see Edward ever being satisfied with a simple life? Like even in Fma 03 which is my favourite interpretation of Edwards character once he gets stranded in our world he learns?? Rocket Science?? For the chance to get back to Amestris but he doesnt really seem to take that goal all that seriously especially considered Alfons ends up getting involved in a lot more aircraft projects than Edward like Edwsrd genuinely enjoys learning!!

Im pretty sure he was the one who dragged Alphonse into Hoenhiems office when they were kids after he left, probably to Al’s reluctance of if they were allowed in there, and started ripping through all of his old books just to learn. Edward never stops and it gets so bad that he never stops to even consider himself constantly worrying about getting his brother back or improving the states of others lives especially when! ya know! the whole country is at stake!!

So in a circumstance post promised day where Ed decides what he wants to do (my personal favourite interpretation is either an alchemical researcher outside of directly performing alchemy, ie revolutionizing the circle matrixes and discovering nee combinations or becoming a professor of some kind) I dont think he would give that up to settle again. And obviously Ling cant exactly up and leave being Emperor unless he decides he doesnt want to, im not the most knowledgable on Lings characterization so I wont speak there but!

They have so much fun together and compliment each other and genuinely care about each other so much but their happiness and fulfillment as people to themselves and others make it so its nearly impossible they would ever realistically end up together and its really doomed and tragic!! idk i think about it a lot.

amusing myself by thinking about how funny it'd be for greedling to show up in xing after everything & just. show off his new immortality to everyone in the palace. like can you imagine being the first born son & thinking "okay, immortality's a stretch, but i'm sure i can get my servants to bring back some healing herbs, and if i play my cards right, i can convince our dad into making me the next king" only for this actual TEENAGER who you have presumably been trying to murder since he was born to show up & be like "ya i did it lol"

so you go, okay, not great, it appears he may be actually immortal, but if i can convince everyone he's LYING, maybe i can humiliate him so badly he exiles himself. only for may to show up with her envy jar & go "dad i brought you a pet he's evil and immortal do you like him" so now you have to deal with that too
