Golden Bears Beat Demon Deacons
Cal Moves Closer to Bowl with 46-36 Win
Fernando Mendoza passes for 385 yards, 2 TDs
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The California football team forced four turnovers and quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for a career-high 385 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, and the Golden Bears registered their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory in program history with a 46-36 triumph over host Wake Forest on Friday night at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Placekicker Ryan Coe booted a pair of 54-yard field goals and wide receiver Mikey Matthews notched career-highs of eight catches and 83 yards, as Cal led wire-to-wire and inched closer to bowl eligibility for the second year in a row. The Bears (5-4) need to win one of their final three games of the regular season to become eligible for the post season.
Cal picked off three passes, including a game-clinching interception by linebacker Liam Johnson with 1:54 to play.
"It's really impressive," Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said. "It's hard to win in this conference. We have a ton of respect for Wake Forest. I'm proud of our players."
Mendoza threw touchdown passes to Matthews and fellow wide receiver Tobias Merriweather, a highly touted transfer from Notre Dame who made his Cal debut Friday after missing the first eight games of the season with an injury. Fellow transfer wide receiver Kyion Grayes, a widely heralded athlete from Ohio State, also played his first game for Cal after recovering from injury.
Merriweather had six catches for 52 yards while Grayes added a pair of receptions for 22 yards. Eleven different players caught at least one pass for the Bears. It's clear the Bears will have a lot more offensive weapons late in the season.
"It was great to have (Merriweather) and Kyion Grayes back in the rotation, throwing passes to them and getting back our chemistry," Mendoza said. "Those are two guys I'm going to get the ball to."
Mendoza added a 5-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter.
Cornerback Nohl Williams recorded another interception to extend his national lead to seven this season while safety Craig Woodson also had a pick during the game's waning seconds to polish off the win. The Bears scored their first touchdown of the game on a 16-yard fumble return by Miles Williams on a kickoff.
Coe, who made just 7 of 14 field goal attempts through the first six games and was eventually replaced by Derek Morris as Cal's primary placekicker, maintained his role as the Bears' choice for longer field goals and responded by twice falling 1 yard shy of tying the program record for longest field goal.
"I'm just proud of that guy for continuing to stick with it through some tough times," Wilcox said. "For Ryan to come in and hit two 54-yarders, that's big time. We knew he could do it. We've seen it. It's not surprising. It's really a testament to him."
The Bears got off to a strong start, taking the opening kickoff and registering five first downs on a 64-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard field goal by Morris. Williams pushed Cal's lead to 10-0 on the ensuing kickoff after Hunter Barth forced a fumble during the return. The Bears led 29-14 at the half and never looked back.
The teams traded scores throughout the second half, and the Demon Deacons started a possession from their own 17 trailing 39-36 with 2:17 to play. Johnson registered his interception on the second play of the drive, and running back Jaivian Thomas provided a cushion with an 11-yard touchdown run with 1:10 remaining.
Johnson and Barth split time at inside linebacker after Cade Uluave left the game with an injury in the second quarter. Barth finished with a career-high seven tackles, including a pair of sacks. Xavier Carlton and David Reese also had a pair of sacks for the Bears, who recorded seven overall.
"I just had to be ready when my number was called," Barth said. "That takes watching all the film, taking all the practice reps and paying attention to detail. It felt good to go out there and execute and leave it all out on the field."
Cal returns home next week to host Syracuse on Nov. 16 at Noon. The game will air on the CW.

Texas Tech: 2023 Independence Bowl Champions
SHREVEPORT, La. ― The Texas Tech football team ended with a bowl victory for the third year in a row, beating California 34-14 Saturday night at the Independence Bowl.
Behren Morton threw three first-half touchdown passes and Gino Garcia kicked a 25-yard field goal as Tech built a 24-14 lead by halftime. Tahj Brooks, who recently announced he will stay with the team for 2024 on the Covid-bonus year, tacked on a 7-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Tech finished 7-6, winning for the fourth time in five games since a 3-5 start. The Red Raiders snapped a three-game win streak by Cal (6-7), which became bowl eligible by winning its last three games of the regular season.
The Golden Bears led 7-0 after Tech's Drae McCray fumbled the opening kickoff and Fernando Mendoza flicked a 25-yard touchdown pass to Monroe Young, a brother of Red Raiders' tight end-linebacker Matthew Young. On its next possession, Cal went 79 yards to reach the Tech 5-yard line, but linebacker Ben Roberts threw Jaydn Ott for a loss on fourth-and-2.
Morton threw touchdown passes on Tech's next three possessions, to Coy Eakin for 27 yards, Mason Tharp for 15 yards and Loic Fouonji for 14 yards.
Here's the Red Raiders' report card.
Offense: A This becomes Behren Morton's team in 2024, and he showed what that could look like with a sharp performance. Coy Eakin had a career high in receiving yards, and Eakin, Mason Tharp and Loic Fouonji pitched in with touchdown catches.
Defense: B Any team's first order of business facing Cal is to contain Pac-12 rushing leader Jaydn Ott. The Red Raiders held the FBS's seventh-leading rusher to 42 yards through three quarters and foiled him twice on fourth down in Tech territory.
Special Teams: B Tech ostensibly spotted Cal the game's first touchdown with Drae McCray's fumble on the opening kickoff. Xavier White set up a touchdown with a 24-yard punt return, and Austin McNamara pinned the Golden Bears at their 15-yard line or inside three times.
Coaching: A Golden Bears wobbled the Red Raiders with a first-play touchdown and another long drive on its second possession. Whatever Joey McGuire's staff said worked, because the Red Raiders kept their poise and answered with authority.
Overall: A Any bowl victory over a team from a power-five conference is a good victory. Can the Red Raiders use it as a springboard for a more satisfying 2024 season than their disappointing follow-up to last year's Texas Bowl triumph?

In 2001, shortly after their graduation from the University of Notre Dame, Better World Books founders Christopher Fuchs, Xavier Helgesen and Jeff Kurtzman sold their used college textbooks online.[5][6][7] The three then formulated a business plan using their experience selling books online.[5][6][7] In 2002, Fuchs and Helgesen held a book drive benefiting the Robinson Community Learning Center in South Bend, Indiana.[5][6][7] During the drive, they collected and sold 2,000 books, which raised $10,000.[5][6][7] Half of the drive's proceeds went to support literacy initiatives at the community center.[1] In 2003, the three entered their business plan into the Notre Dame Social Venture Business Plan Competition, which was sponsored by the Gigot Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business.[6] They won the competition, with a grand prize of $7,000 and mentorship from entrepreneur David Murphy.[6] Murphy served as Better World Books president and CEO from 2004 to 2011, before leaving to direct Notre Dame's Master of Entrepreneurship program (ESTEEM).[3][6][8]Sign outside the Better World Books world headquarters in Mishawaka, Indiana. Better World Books acquired a US Small Business Administration-backed credit line in 2004.[5] In April 2008, Better World Books secured an additional $4.5 million in venture capital via Good Capital, LLC and 18 private investors.[9] In 2008, the company opened an operation in Dunfermline, Scotland, and started a UK website in 2010.[10][11][12][13][14] In 2016, the company opened a new distribution center in Reno, Nevada, creating 150 new jobs.[4] The non-profit B Lab has certified "Better World Books" as a "B corporation", meaning it meets certain standards for social welfare, because it donates books or a percentage of its profit to literacy programs around the world.[15] As of 2013, the company had donated an estimated $14 million under this program.[1]

Bears 3-0 With Win Over San Diego State
Jaivian Thomas Rushes For Career-Best 169 Yards
BERKELEY –Jaivian Thomas rushed for a career-high 169 yards and the Golden Bears held San Diego State without a touchdown until "garbage time" late in the fourth quarter (with nearly all starters resting on the bench) in a 31-10 whitewashing of San Diego State on Saturday night at California Memorial Stadium. The score would've been even more lopsided if two more Cal touchdowns had not been negated by (what turned out to be upon review) "phantom" holding penalties.
With the win, Cal is off to its first 3-0 start since 2019 and has won six regular season games in a row for the first time since capturing the final regular season game of the 2006 season and the first five in 2007.
Four different Golden Bears scored touchdowns, including two who reached the end zone for their first time at Cal – running back Kadarius Calloway and tight end Corey Dyches. Wide receiver Nyziah Hunter continued his eye-opening freshman season with his fourth scoring catch of the year.
Calloway finished with 87 yards rushing as the Bears amassed 275 yards on the ground as a team. Jaydn Ott missed the game due to injury.
Cornerback Nohl Williams, who entered the game leading the nation in interceptions, added his fourth of the season in the second quarter. Xavier Carlton had a career-high 2.5 sacks for Cal.
The Aztecs scored first on a 29-yard field goal from Nick Lopez with 5:42 left in the first quarter but the Bears answered immediately with a seven-play, 69-yard drive that culminated in an 8-yard scoring run by Mendoza. The score remained 7-3 at halftime as the teams combined to commit 19 penalties in the first half – including 13 by the Aztecs. One of the penalties against Cal (for holding) negated a touchdown run. Upon review it proved to be incorrect, but holding calls cannot be challenged.
In addition, for the second game in a row the Bears lost a defensive player for "targeting" - safety Craig Woodson was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct when San Diego State's RB ran into him, causing "helmet to helmet" contact. Woodson did not initiate it and simply wrapped the player with his arms as he fell to the ground. The bogus penalty was on a 3rd down play that would have kept the Aztecs out of field goal range. Unfortunately the extra 15 yards they gained and first down allowed them to eventually get all the way down to the Cal 12 yard line where they were able to kick a field goal.
The Bears established some breathing room with two long scoring drives in the third quarter – an 8-play, 85-yard possession that ended with Calloway's 7-yard scoring run, and a 13-play, 90-yard drive that culminated in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Mendoza to Dyches.
A 48-yard field goal by Ryan Coe pushed Cal's advantage to 24-3, and San Diego State finally reached the end zone to make it 24-10 early in the fourth quarter. Hunter capped off the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown catch with 9:48 to play.
The Bears resume play next Saturday when they play their first ACC football game ever at Florida State. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT and the game will air on ESPN2.
