Is there anyone you wished joined the army but didn't?
Truthfully, there were a few half-bloods I came across during jobs for my father that would've been quite a big help in the war, but they had their reasons not to join our ranks and that's their decision in the end.
Of course, Hades' daughter Bianca di Angelo would've been quite the addition, though I believe Artemis got to her first. Though, she had died by the time Azrael and I found her, so I suppose she wouldn't have been much help.
On the subject of Hades' children, her brother Nico di Angelo would've been a great help as well, but when Torrington found him in the Labyrinth, he seemed more fond of being on his own.
There is also Azara Valverde, though I suppose it would've benefited us more in the sense that she would reign Wyn in more then be aid in the battle, though being a daughter of Bellona she would've done us well. As it is though, many of the legionnaires are too loyal for their own good.
Will Solace would've been another good one, but Lee would probably have our heads if anyone tried to recruit any of his siblings from camp, so he was out of the question from the start,
Isabella Nocturne as well, but Kronos deemed her too loyal to Athena and had her killed. Which was a stupid move if you ask me, but who am I to question the titan lord.

wyn and his mama🥳 (info below the image)
Wyn is Scithe's adopted son in the asylum. As far as anyone knows, Wyn is the only person in the asylum aside from Mr. Lee who Scithe tolerates.
Most of the other patients in the asylum are afraid of Wyn, mostly due to an incident that happened prior to his mouth being sewed shut.
Wyn had himself convinced that the infection, FAc, had genuinely turned him into an angel. He pretty much went around BEGGING the other patients to treat him as if he were one, and when that didn't work, Wyn attacked people.

January took forever and February took days. February also saw robins and single-jacket weather and geese migrations, and now it is also seeing December-grade snowfall? The 21st century is weird.
Anyway, I feel like this was another good reading month, even though I had some decidedly all right books in my list and a few moments of "I have hundreds of unread books, why is there nothing to read?!" I managed to offload five (5!) reading copies and only take two in, though I already know I've got two more coming towards me soon because I just can't say no, apparently.
As for book hauls and the TBR shelf situation: I only bought one book, the latest installment of the Rivers of London comics, which I hadn't realized was out so obviously I had to get it. And then read it a couple days later. Also read off my shelves were Dreadnought by Cherie Priest (which had only been on my shelf for 13 years), The Compleat Discworld Atlas, and Jackalope Wives and Other Stories by T. Kingfisher, which isn't pictured because I have the ebook and I couldn't get a good pic of my phone. (People who do this, please send tips!)
And following on from my Digger update from last month: the books are one step closing to shipping internationally! Hooray!
Oh, and a friend with a book box subscription passed a map from the Daevabad Trilogy on to me, so I have yet another decoration for my shelves. Still finding the optimal place for it, and feeling blessed to have such friends.
No idea what March is going to bring, except I feel like there'll be more dithering about reading material.

MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment
In January 2024, at the height of Brazil’s summer, a group of 20 MIT undergraduates will arrive in São Paulo, Brazil, for the Independent Activities Period (IAP) course WGS.247/21L.592 (Race, Place, and Modernity in the Americas) jointly offered by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences’ programs in Women’s and Gender Studies, Literature, and Writing.
Continuing a program developed in 2019 and launched as a special course in 2020, the three-week course offers students opportunities to study how American and Brazilian Black and Indigenous writers, artists, and filmmakers’ art and cultural activism — particularly women’s — can impact racial justice and environmental issues.
The class will visit historical sites, cultural centers, nature reserves, and museums while also engaging in conversations with local scholars, activists, religious leaders, community organizers, and artists.
By mixing classroom discussions with on-site exploration and cross-cultural exchanges, the course offers innovative pedagogy that is experiential (learning by doing), immersive (learning within an environment), and interdisciplinary (learning across different fields).
An immersive course, years in the making
Joaquin Terrones ’99, a lecturer in literature and women’s and gender studies, was already teaching this material when he considered expanding its scope. “It seemed like the natural next step was to take students to Brazil so they could experience its incredible culture, art, and activism for themselves,” he remembers.
In 2019, he and Wyn Kelley, a senior lecturer in literature, received a Higher Education Innovation grant from the MIT Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) to develop the course and teach it as a special subject the following year.
Generous support from MIT-Brazil, the Office of Minority Education, and MindHandHeart completed its transformation into a full-fledged course in women’s and gender studies, literature, and writing as part of MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) last January.
Helen Elaine Lee, a professor in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies/Writing program, co-taught the subject in its first full year, sharing her experiences using creative practices to further social justice.
Undergraduates from across MIT’s five schools, particularly Black, Latino, LGBTQ+, and first-generation college students, have enrolled. This outreach is important because some studies have shown students from these groups are underserved by study abroad programs, participating at significantly lower rates.
“Our students want spaces like the one created by this course to think deeply and collectively about the daunting array of crises we face, from catastrophic climate change to entrenched violence against communities of color,” says Terrones.
No day at the beach … well, maybe one or two
Although a few weeks in South America during January might sound like a vacation, the course is rigorous and intense, packing a semester’s worth of material into three weeks. Students spend mornings in seminar-style discussions, head out across the city for field trips in the afternoon, and return to their residences in the early evening for a few hours of readings or screenings.
For Tamea Cobb, a senior double majoring in chemical engineering and literature, the class trip to Rio led to an epiphany. “I remember waking up super early to watch the sunrise on the beach, where we saw a man practicing capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form disguised to look like dancing by enslaved Africans forbidden from practicing martial arts. We had just learned about capoeira the week prior, so it was a beautiful full-circle moment.”
In addition to class outings in São Paulo and Rio, students also organize their own weekend trips within Brazil to places such as Salvador, the unofficial capital of Afro-Brazilian culture, and Inhotim, a vast open-air art museum and botanical garden in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.
Beyond Brazil
The course’s impact continues well after its completion as participants incorporate what they learned into their work and lives.
“The course was a priceless experience that further revealed the interconnectedness of African experiences in the Americas,” says Afura N. Taylor ’21, who double majored in physics and writing. “It has influenced my writing by providing examples of literature and cultural practices that center ancestral memory.”
Educators also see benefits. “I had no idea it would give me a new research project on the presence of Brazil in Black U.S. print culture from the early national period to the present,” says Kelley.
In fact, the course’s success has inspired two new IAP subjects in Brazil this year: 21G.S07 (Language Conversation and Brazilian Culture) by Nilma Dominique from the Global Studies and Languages Section, and 10.496/1.096 (Design of Sustainable Polymer Systems in the Amazon) by Professor Bradley Olsen in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
When asked what makes the course special, Professor Lee describes “[a] unique power [that] derives from rigorous discussions of challenging texts and films that question prevalent assumptions about history and politics, and immersive cultural experiences that open mind and heart, expanding and empowering students who often feel isolated and excluded on MIT’s campus.”
She adds, “In addition to deepening my intellectual and political understanding, this class gave me a profound experience of ancestral recovery that has fed my artistic work. For our Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students, it was a liberatory experience of community. A re-education. A cultural and personal homecoming.”

EEN BOODSCHAP IN ZEVENTIEN LETTERGREPEN
Eigenlijk weten ze daar in het land van de rijzende zon pas echt wat dichten is. Om in een paar lettergrepen en enkele regels neer te schrijven wat leven is. Niet onterecht noemen ze hun land zelf Nippon: de oorsprong van de zon. Japan is het oosterse Eden, de plek waar de wereld is ontstaan. Het beloofde land in het verre oosten. In die bakermat is het zaad ontkiemt, daar ligt de bron, speelt het boek Genesis zich eigenlijk af. Dat is zoals de Jappen zichzelf hoog achten, maar de wens is de vader van de gedachte. En om dat geloof in zichzelf fier te houden, met de vlag in top, wordt de wil in poëtische woorden uitgesproken. En er weinig lettergrepen aan vuil gemaakt, want eenvoud is meervoud.
De tanka is een lyrisch gedicht zonder bedoeld rijm of vastgestelde maat. Het verwoordt hoe een natuurindruk en een eigen beleving elkaar vinden; met elkaar een gedicht vormen. Daaruit is de haiku ontstaan. Deze drukt, in de klassieke vorm, een ogenblikervaring uit, soms gelinkt aan en geïnspireerd door zen. De haiku is een vingerhoed vol emotie, waarin weinig ruimte is voor ontledingen en benaderende omschrijvingen. De Japanner is een meester in het kort verwoorden van een gevoel, het op scherp zetten van een impressie. Hij heeft weinig omhaal nodig om zich spitsvondig uit te drukken. Het is te vergelijken met de westerse light verse. Hoewel de oosterse dichter behagen schept in het opstellen van een tanka of haiku heeft het meer waarde dan ons plezierdichten met die lichte, speelse toon. De haiku mag dan fantasierijk zijn en luchtig lijken, het is een serieuze tak van sport.
"De positie van de haiku in onze literatuur is te vergelijken met die van de aquarel in de beeldende kunst", lees ik in het voorwoord van dichter en publicist Maarten Mourik tot de drietalige bundel 'Maren in de wind'. In de bundel met op de haiku gebaseerde poëzie is Duitstalig werk afgedrukt van Hugo Ernst Käufer. In het Nederlands en Fries vertaald door Gerhild Tóth-van Rooij. In de Friese titel komt de strekking van het boek, daterend 1996, het meest tot de verbeelding sprekend uit: De wyn boadskippet. "De Japanse haiku is in hoge mate evocatief", schrijft Mourik verder, "- ook hier ligt een parallel.met de aquarel voor de hand - waarbij zelfs het timbre van de woorden van belang is." De westerse haiku zal nooit kunnen voldoen aan de Japanse traditionele regels, is Mourik van mening, maar hoeft daardoor kwalitatief niet minder te zijn.

Käufer en Mourik zijn inmiddels overleden, maar Tóth-van Rooij is nog springlevend. Zij maakt zich nog voortdurend sterk voor deze vorm van poëzie. Over de kunstenaar werd in 1996 al geschreven dat met haar gelijkgezinde herdichting van het werk van Käufer ze niet alleen haar eigen dichterlijke potentie, maar ook de poëtische legitimatie van de westerse haiku bevestigd. Want het is natuurlijk geen sinecure om het Duits met al zijn taaleigenaardigheden over te zetten in de Nederlandse taal met tegengestelde betekenissen. Niet iedere uitdrukking of elk woord kan een-op-een met dezelfde strekking en betekenis van de ene taal in de andere worden overgezet. Er kan aan inhoud en relevantie verloren gaan. Beeldend kunstenaar en auteur/vertaler Gerhild Tóth weet het echter zo te bewegen dat de betekenis een nieuwe waarde krijgt. De taal als het ware is gerecycled en de haiku opnieuw kan worden beleefd, een eigen gevoel krijgt in de andere taal. In het Fries heeft de poëtische bewoording zelfs nog een dimensie meer.
'Erster Frost mahnt schon / dass die Erde genug hat / von all dern Reifen - Eerste vrieskou maant / dat de aarde genoeg heeft / van al het rijpen - Earste froast moannet / dat de ierde har nocht hat / fan al it rypjen'
In de Duitse moedertaal van Käufer bulderen de woorden uit de roerende regels. Donderend als Bachs koren en gezwollen bij Beethoven en Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. De taal leent zich voor een klassieke barse benadering waarin de herinnering de opmaat is. En omdat deze in de mond van de dichter zijn gelegd, het de spraak is die hij dagelijks bezigt, zijn die woorden gekozen die het meest schurken tegen de emotie. Dat te vertalen in het vlakke Nederlands is bijna als vloeken in de kerk. Tóth weet daar toch alles uit te halen en vanuit het platte vlak de taal naar een hoger plan te schrijven. De emotie is vertaald maar heeft aan kracht nauwelijks een letter verloren. Het Fries heeft dan weer meer energie en dynamiek. Daarin klinkt de ontroering van Käufer beter door. Daar schuurt de bewogenheid met doen en laten het best.

Käufer woont afwisselend in Bochum en Sint Jacobiparochie, en deze aan elkaar ongelijke omgevingen echoën in de verzen. Zit hij in Duitsland tussen de huizen bij de industrie, op het Friese land overziet hij het noorderleech en loopt over de waddendijk. Dat verschil in zijn geeft de haiku een bijzonder persoonlijke tint. Past het Duits perfect aan het Ruhrgebied, de Friese taal is terecht in de Waadhoeke. Het Nederlands staat daar tussenin als overgang en om het doel en de betekenis duidelijk te maken. "Een gedicht is meer dan de som der woorden," schrijft Tóth in de aftiteling van de bundel, "en meer dan de letterlijke betekenis van op zichzelf staande regels. Een gedicht is een geheel, waarin metafoor, ritme en klank van gelijk belang zijn." Het is dus niet alleen de talige vertaling die ertoe doet, het is zeker ook de cadans die van belang is. Meer nog de melodie dan de taal is wat het gedicht zo leesbaar maakt. De strikte schrijfvorm en opbouw van de haiku maakt dat wel van de letterlijke vertaling moet worden afgeweken. Dit om het aantal lettergrepen en de opgeroepen beelden te behouden. En niet iedere uitdrukking heeft in de verschillende talen eenzelfde betekenis. Vertalen is een avontuur vindt Tóth, daar er verschillen in gedachten en beelden zijn tussen het Duits, het Nederlands en het Fries. Deze verschillen benadrukken het unieke en onvervangbare van elke taal. En wist Gerhild Tóth in woorden niet de juiste sfeer te pakken, dan kon zij zich in getekende beelden uitdrukken. Hoewel in abstracte tekeningen gevat wordt er een werkelijk gevoel mee overgebracht.
'Botschaften im Wind' is een bijzondere bundel, waarin volkse en landseigen eigenaardigheden samenkomen. Waarin talen om elkaar draaien maar zich in het uitdrukken van gevoel kunnen vinden. "Tijdens het vertalen besefte ik," sluit Tóth af, "hoe bijzonder het is om een ander cultuurgoed te benaderen vanuit de taal en de traditie waarmee wij het meest vertrouwd zijn." ʼn Lewendige grys
Die beeld wat my te binne geskiet het toe ek hierdie blog begin konseptualiseer het, is daardie houer borrelende adamantium in die een X-Men-film waar Wolverine en Lady Deathstrike baklei. Meeste mense dink nie aan grys as ʼn kleur wat lewe nie, die meeste assosieer dit met oudword en ʼn tipe stagnasie. Deesdae begin ek daaraan dink as ʼn ruimte waarin potensiaal opgesluit lê – mense praat immers van grys areas wanneer daar nie totale sekerheid oor iets is nie.
My konstante belangstelling in wat mense motiveer het my onlangs op die pad van grys areas gelei. Dit val my deesdae op hoe maklik dit is om op skrille kontraste te fokus – oud teenoor jonk, inskiklik teenoor onbeskof, slim teenoor minder slim. Ander kontraste is waar belange betrokke is: Hoe groter die gaping tussen wat ek wil hê en wat jy wil hê, hoe plofbaarder/interessanter/boeiender die situasie. Dit is ook hierdie groot verskille of kontraste wat die spilpunt van die meeste films of ander tipes vermaak is: Hoe uiteenlopender die hoofkarakters is, hoe meer behoort hulle belange te verskil en hoe lekkerder gaan dit wees om te kyk/lees/hoor hoe hulle letterlik of figuurlik teen mekaar veg (neem ʼn mens aan). Die lewe floreer semi op die beklemtoning van verskille en hoekom ʼn storie kyk of aan die storie van die lewe deelneem as daar nie duidelike konflik is nie? Daarsy, ek het die antwoord!
Is dit so eenvoudig? Natuurlik is dit nie, want dit is nie net groot of klein verskille wat ons laat skree, huil en baklei nie, dit is ook kleiner, gryser dinge. Dalk is dit nie ʼn ding waar jy lynreg met iemand verskil nie, maar genoeg om dinge net effe krapperig te maak. Jy wil ook op vakansie gaan, maar jy wil langs die swembad sit en wyn drink en gedigte lees en nie vir drie dae deur die berge schlep nie. En wat gebeur as hierdie grys areas hulleself binne één mens bevind? Dít is sekerlik die grootste oorsaak van die langdurende en ewige konflik wat die menslike toestand kenmerk. Dis moeilik om ʼn klemverskuiwing te sien as iets wat ʼn mens se lewe kan verander, maar dit is inderdaad nog altyd die geval gewees.
Wat gebeur die dag wanneer jy nie heeltemal ander dinge wil doen/hê/sê nie, net effens anders? Jy wil nog steeds vervuld voel, nog steeds skryf en skep, maar net nie soos wat jy dit tans doen nie. Hoe beweeg jy anders binne dieselfde arena? Die lewe is propvol sulke klein onsekerhede, klein grys areas. Ons soek natuurlik die sekerheid van wit en swart, maar helaas is dit ons nie beskore die dag wat ons die lewe ernstig wil opneem nie. As die dag in jou lewe arriveer wanneer jy besef jy staan nie rotsvas op absolute sekerheid oor enige iets nie, is die dag wat jou ware lewe begin.
My een-ding-red-dalk-ʼn-duisend vir vandag is om met passie en oorgawe na Light it up van Robin Hustin, TobiMorrow en Jex te gaan luister. Voel al die grysheid wat jy kan en wees bereid om die dag daarmee trompop te loop.
