Rulers Make Bad Lovers
Whumpuary, Day 23 - Prompt: "You're Awake"
Tumblr media
Empress Emily Kaldwin feels caged by her tower. Wyman just wants her to stay.
I felt like writing a dialogue-heavy one today, but it still took me like six hours
AO3 Here
Emily crept silently around the room as she got dressed. The only light she had was a moonbeam seeping through a crack in the curtains, and a lot of her clothes were strewn about the floor with her partners', which made progress slow. Finally, all that was left was the ring on her nightstand, which she slipped onto her middle finger and crossed the room to the false bookcase. As she touched the ring to the secret lock, she heard the sheets rustle behind her and quickly dropped her arm back to her side.
"Emily?" Wyman asked sleepily, rubbing one eye with the heel of their hand.
"You're awake? I was just - "
"Outsider's eyes, you're unbelievable," Wyman interrupted, before Emily could think of an excuse.
"I'm sorry?"
Wyman sat up a little straighter and stopped pretending they only just woke up. "I've been watching since you got out of bed, waiting until I could catch you red handed, and you still try and lie to me!"
"Shh!" Emily hushed, gesturing at the other figure in her bed. "You'll wake Alexi."
Wyman scowled. "She'd sleep through a lightning storm, don't try and deflect."
Emily sighed and took a step back towards Wyman. "I'm sorry," she said.
"So you were sneaking out?"
"I am. And lying about it just comes naturally, I didn't mean anything by it."
Wyman scoffed, and despite the fact that it was true Emily didn't push the matter. Instead she reached out to try and take their hand, but they snatched it away before her fingers could make contact.
"You can't keep running out at all hours, Emily," Wyman warned. There was a hit of chastisement in their tone that made Emily bristle.
"Why not? I'm the Empress, I can do what I like."
Wyman sat forward a little and grabbed her wrists. "That's exactly the point: you are Empress. You're just not acting like it."
"Oh, spare me!" Emily grumbled, forgetting for a moment to keep her voice down. She stood up, tugging her hands out of Wyman's grip as she moved.
"You spend more time gallivanting across the rooftops than you do at court," Wyman pointed out.
"So? My advisors practically run everything for me."
"That might have worked when you were a teenager, but you can't keep abdicating the responsibility."
"'Abdicate responsibility'?" she repeated, waggling her fingers mockingly. "What's got into you, Wyman? You never - " realisation dawned and she folded her arms. "Oh I see. Who put you up to this? Marchand? My father?"
Wyman's eyes darted across the bedsheets to Alexi's sleeping form before they could stop themself, and Emily scowled.
"When she wakes up I'll kill her," she grumbled.
"Okay, so she mentioned she had concerns," Wyman admitted grudgingly. "I think she thought you might listen to me."
Emily shook her head slowly. "I don't listen to people who tell me what to do with my free time, Wyman." It was petulant, she knew, but she was too angry to stop. "Don't become one of those people, and don't pretend you care about me turning up to court."
Wyman collapsed back against their pillows and ground out a frustrated sigh from between clenched teeth. "You're right, I don't care about what happens at court. But I care about Alexi, and I care about you. What you're doing is upsetting her, and it's putting you in danger. Can you at least just… cut down?" Wyman lifted their head a little so they could see Emily, but she looked away from their eyes.
"You don't understand," she said softly.
"No, you're right, I don't," Wyman said.
"Everyone expects so much of me, and this… it's the only way I can be free of that," Emily said. All her life, she had been surrounded by advisors and policy experts and parliament and nobles, and they all wanted something from her that conflicted with something someone else wanted from her, and there was never any time to think any of it through before she was being rushed for a decision.
"Emily, you live in a tower with servants attending to your every whim," Wyman said sharply. "Don't try and tell me life is just too hard for poor little Empress Emily Drexel Lela Kaldwin the first." It was a sore spot for them: Emily knew they had grown up poor in one of the fishing villages in the north of Gristol before they made a name for themself as a playwright. Not many people were privy to that information, but Wyman liked to throw it in her face whenever she got too comfortable with her charmed life.
Emily rolled her eyes, but conceded. "I know. But I'm still trapped in here. Sometimes I just… need some air."
"Sometimes," Wyman said emphatically. "But it's been every night lately. Even I've noticed how poorly you focus during the day now, and people are starting to get suspicious."
Emily laughed sarcastically. "Of what? That you and Alexi are wearing me out every night?"
"Don't joke," Wyman insisted. "This is serious. There are rumours that you're not fit for rule, and if I've heard them that means people aren't worried about it getting back to you."
Emily paused for the first time. "What people?"
"There's a group in parliament that - "
"More Regenters," Emily waved a hand dismissively. "Nobody cares what they think."
"Damn it all Emily!"
Both of them paused as Alexi shifted and mumbled in her sleep, but she didn't wake up and Emily blew out a breath of relief.
"I am trying to help you," Wyman hissed, remembering not to shout this time.
"I don't want help," Emily shot back. "This is my life, and I'll manage my responsibilites the way I see fit."
Wyman's jaw tensed so hard Emily could see the muscles working under their skin. "If that's what you want," they said. "But if you go out that door tonight then you'll have to find somewhere else to sleep when you come back."
"Wyman, come on - "
"No, Emily, I mean it." Their face was set, and seeing the determination in their eyes just made Emily more annoyed.
"That's my bed you're lying in," she pointed out.
Wyman gave her a tight, angry smile. "There's another in your secret room there. You'll pass it on your way out the door."
Emily could just say sorry, shed the tears she was holding back at upsetting her partner, promise to do better, and go back to sleep in two sets of loving arms. At least, she wished she could. But her blood was up now, indignant that her closest confidante could join the campaign to keep her trammeled and proper, and the only thing that could cool her down was the bite of the cold night air. So instead, she turned and jammed her signet ring into the secret lock so hard she thought she might break her finger.
She already knew she'd regret it as the bookcase door slid shut behind her.

Kinktober/Voidtober, Part 2
Theme 1: Knifeplay. Ship: Knifecrow. Warning: Kink, blood, aggressive show of affrection.
Daud spins the knife in his hand, looking at how the light plays on it's sharp edge. Corvo always compares Daud to this instrument. Deadly, elegant, durable. Yet, in the right hands, it can be used for many different things. Cooking, carving wood, even healing. Something that is used to cut those wounds into people can also help to tear the fabric into smaller pieces, making it easy to cover the injury. Ironic, if you consider what has become of Daud in those last few months. New promotion, reputation. Even tittle, along with respect among those who usually despised him for his low place of birth on society. Daud feels like a knife that got a new handle, was sharpened and got the respect it deserves. Daud knows he should feel proud and relieved. But he feels more nervous than anything else. He sighs, puts down his pen and goes towards the window. Hearing somebody entering, he doesn't even react, knowing all too well who this is. — Corvo, you can stop trying to scare me. I know you're here. He turns, but sees nothing. His knife is missing. Daud thinks for a second that he is mistaking, but when his own blade touches his neck, royal spymaster has no doubt. — You are such a dick sometimes. — Come on. You love it, — Corvo presses on the blade, making Daud swallow out of nerve and excitement. Corvo slowly drags the blade upwards, almost cutting through the skin. Daud feels a tiny drop of blood going down his neck and carotid artery. He is not afraid for his life. Attano likes to play with Daud like he is a dog. And Daud lets him. His reasons are his own. But this sense of belonging is too great to give up just yet. Theme 2: Assassin. Ship: Emily/Male!Wyman. Wyman is a trustworthy ally. Emily knows about it well. Too well, infact. Many people also know this, and this is quite natural for them to try and get rid of her lover. He doesn't face any murder attempts until today. Good thing that Emily is prepared for it. When a shadow cases slight movements in candle's flame, Wyman already stands guard. Feeling that someone is stalking him through the halls, he prepared his knife when he enters his room. He knows that he is all alone. Guards have been taken care of. He has to face him alone. Or, that is what he thinks. Wyman sees how the assassins charges, pressing him to the door. The noble is no stranger to combat. He fights back, punching a hired killer in the face. This second is enough for him to gain the upper hand. Assassin flips them over, trying to make the last blow. But he freezes, gasping for air. A scarf, tightly wrapping around killer's neck, gives him almost no chance to fight. He gets one single blow to the head before collapsing. A not-so-mysterious figure ties him up, pushin an unconscious knife for hire aside. — I owe you yet again, your majesty. — Wyman gently holds Emily's hand in his, kissing her wrist that is wrapped in a cloth. — Shut up, mister royal, — young Kaldwin laughs and puts her hand on Wyman's cheek, rubbing it against his soft skin. — How did you know it was me? — Only a deadly assassin can go unnoticed by another deadly assassin.
— You think i'm deadly? — The deadliest woman for me, my little sparrow. Emily smiles, winks at Wyman and leans in for a kiss, wrapping her hands around his strong neck, not forgetting to put away an unsuccessful killer in the heavy wooden closet until morning.

I’m getting the urge to start writing for Dishonored again but I know I need to pace myself and get my Fallout stuff worked on.
Little fun fact though I do have a plan for how Wyman and Michael (humansider) meet.
(Wyman shoots him and then chases him into a room where Michael channels his inner Ted and starts chucking random things at them.)

From Davos' wife's perspective, Asoiaf is kind of like The Odyssey. She waits at home with the remains of her family after her husband went off to war on foreign shores and presumably died. He has been hanging out with kings, nobles, pirates and an immortal(?) witch. Also he was last seen being sent to an island of cannibals and mythical creatures by a Merman Lord; but not before said lord declared to all the realms that he was dead.
Tell me, O Grrm, of the reliable knight who sailed far and wide...

like people are always whacking george for this and yeah he can be a bit handwavey with like “margaery and her cousins” “this random girl we never hear from again was alysanne’s lady for many years” or whatever, like he doesn’t single out more than two or three girls usually, their families aren’t always as politically active as you’d expect them to be but they are THERE they do EXIST like there’s a FUCKTON of tyrells in that capital, ned himself comments on the sheer number of evil blondes hanging around, All Three Baratheon Brothers Are There For A Long Time, petyr is by himself but he has an ENTIRE SPY NETWORK meanwhile ned just rolls up with nothing but a glorified intern, a mean party nun, and his two young daughters and is like “i can fix the entire government actually politics is easy” NED WHERE ARE YOUR CRONIES. THE ENTIRE NORTH IS LINING UP TO BE YOUR INSANE HENCHMAN AND YOU LEFT THEM ON READ.

i wont lie i hold quite a bit of fondness for house manderly. like wyman manderly's meeting with davos skyrocketed him into being one of my fav schemers in this series. like yesss people in story assume wyman is a craven and an idiot who can be pushed into submission but thats not true!! he uses those expectations against people to disarm them into seeing him as not much of a threat. he even plays into these concepts like the pie scene is one of his most iconic ofc because like what a ballsy move to disappear three frey family members and then appear at a wedding with three massive pies and ask a singer to play the song about a man's son being turned into a pie and served to him. and the whole family playing into the mummer's show in the merman's court is soooo good too like okay his granddaughters are down to perform all this to backstab the people who killed their uncle. literally awesome. anyway merman sigil + "the merman's court" name + the fact all of the guards wield tridents and not spears. chefs kiss they have the pizzazz they know how to perform. definitely a house that resembles the families in the reach but are loyal northmen all the same.

The lineup of our beloved ASOIAF ttrpg campaign characters!⚔️
Our amazing GM @oneirotect has set us in 207 AC between the first and second Blackfyre Rebellions (around 90 years before Game of Thrones and 50 years after the death of the last known dragon). So far we've travelled across the Narrow Sea, partied in Braavos, escaped an assassination attempt by the Golden Company, made some difficult political decisions and started romantic entanglements with likely very dire consequences.

idt we talk enough about how a song of ice and fire is also the song of incest and cannibalism. i mean, sure, obviously both of those subjects are noted as present, but the saga feels much more known for its incest, which idt is fair or accurate to the later materiel. iirc, jaime fucking cersei next to their dead firstborn is the last instance of onpage incest happening in present tl, and after that it's all about the cannibals, baby.
(disclaimer: cw/tw sa, cw/tw rape, and i'm not counting cousincest as that's normal in-world even for non-targaryens and also still legal in many places in our world today, nor counting the faux-incestuous freudian mess that is littlefinger/alayne(sansa)/sweetrobin, nor any dark humor jokes and/or unfulfilled threats wrt forced cannibalism)
in fact pretty much all the active incest during the present tl happens in those first 3 books:
the twincest as a major plot point ofc, kicking action off when bran saw them fucking in a tower
and viserys creeping on dany and twisting her nipple
tyrion relating his backstory to bronn wherein he and tysha were both raped by proxy by his father, tywin (tho tyrion does not use that terminology)
craster still being alive to rape and impregnate his own daughters (resulting in dozens of forced incestuous relationships)
and theon unknowingly groping his own sister while she (knowingly) groped him in return
jaime's early pov recalled how he shut up cersei with kissing when they fought after bran refused to die
bella of stoney sept trying and failing to seduce gendry who is (unbeknownst to them both) her half-brother as both were sired by robert baratheon (only example in these 3 books where incest was averted before any sexual activity or incestuous contact occurred)
the aforementioned sept twincest next to joffrey's corpse
tyrion learning from oberyn about cersei twisting his penis when he was a baby
cersei's failed attempt to seduce jaime in wst, pulling out his dick for either a bj or hj until her talk of tyrion's death made him lose his boner
while incest is not exactly absent from the text after that, it seems to exist in the feastdance only in hypotheticals or past memories:
aeron's trauma flashbacks of his (implied only in published text) csa by euron
jaime still feeling lust when seeing cersei nude
and her fond reminiscing about them fucking behind robert's back/brief dream of them as a married couple before her walk of shame
and cersei remembering another she twisted tyrion's baby penis
victarion misinterpreting asha's offer of partnership as a marriage proposal and suddenly looking at his niece in a new way with "his manhood beginning to stiffen"
jaime's recollection of fucking cersei at darry next to robert as he was passed out drunk before cersei sent him to hunt arya (which would have happened back in agot and the point of this scene is more his failed hunt for a child just to make cersei happy)
arianne's "uneasy" memory of a past fantasy about being seduced by a man whose description is suspiciously similar to her late uncle oberyn
the aborted marital match of aegon/young griff to his purported aunt dany
illyrio saying (the now dead) viserys tried to rape dany the night before her wedding to drogo (another event from agot concerning a guy we already knew was into incest)
and tyrion once saying he wanted to rape as well as murder cersei
conversely, the cannibalism in the earlier books is most often only unproven hypotheticals alluded to as possible cannibalism:
old nan saying the others fed their dead servants the flesh of human children (which we have not yet seen with any wights so far, whether or not one counts walking undead eating human flesh as straight-up cannibalism)
the mystery meat in flea bottom's bowls o' brown which may or may not contain symon silver tongue after tyrion had him killed
renly's recollection that cressen kept stannis from catapulting their old master-at-arms by saying they may need to eat him later (which did not come to pass thanks to davos)
joffrey telling his people to eat their own dead (with no way of knowing if any actually did)
lady hornwood eating her own fingers (though bran's pov only notes them being chewed on, not swallowed. it's only in adwd that people talk of her eating the fingers.)
the mentions of the ice river clans being the cannibals beyond the wall (who are def not among the free folk jon snow gets to know onpage, making it just background detail)
bran's (possibly mythical) story of the rat cook
and biter chewing on people he attacked and other corpses (which seems to be just a side hobby connected to his killing method moreso constituting a snack than a full meal from a person butchered for meat. this tendancy of his is just background detail in acok, with biter chewing a corpse in the background after the weasel soup operation, and the hindsight implication that it could well have been him rather than dogs or wolves who had "been at" the corpses after the skirmish where yoren was killed)
while the feastdance feels much more in your face with cannibalism, having not only more total mentions of the practice but also more confirmed, actual cannibalism (as opposed to the ambiguity of each and every bowl o' brown), for those who know how to look at the evidence:
jaime learned that his father's mad dog aka the mountain fed parts of vargo hoat to all his prisoners (including vargo himself) after recapturing harrenhal
and euron bragged about pulling a similar trick with the warlocks he captured (the only twist being that the warlocks knew what they were being forced to eat, which vargo hoat and wylis manderly etc at harrenhal likely didn't)
the elder brother of the quiet isle told of biter eating all of a woman's breasts at saltpans after she'd been raped and killed (prob the largest amount of flesh biter's confirmed to have eaten from one corpse)
bran and co. ate "pig" supplied by coldhands which had to be long pig aka human meat
brienne felt her face being eaten by biter in her own pov (which is so much worse than him chewing others in the background of the weasel soup scene)
theon was told that two ironmen at moat cailin were found eating their dead comrades
the astapori were said to eat their own dead while under siege by the yunkishmen
and then were said to do so again in refugee camps outside meereen
sam and davos sailed past skagos and remembered stories of skagosi cannibalism
khrazz the pit fighter cut the hearts from his defeated foes to eat them
cotter pyke's last letter to jon snow said the wildlings were eating their own dead at hardhome
4 of stannis's men were executed by burning for butchering and eating other men (with asha wondering how many others had done so without being caught)
and ofc the frey pies with wyman manderly having his 3 former guests killed and serving their meat to their own kin and the other guests at ramsay's wedding while eating some himself too
two of these examples (involving gregor clegane and euron greyjoy) must have actually happened during the course of asos, but grrm chose to give us the gruesome details in affc, which was brand new information about men we already knew were villains but did not know were into that fucked-up shit specifically, unlike being reminded that agot-era jaime and viserys wanted to fuck their sisters. (and not unlike how adwd has the clarification of multiple characters saying lady hornwood ate her own fingers as opposed to bran's acok pov just saying she chewed on them.) it's as if after craster was killed and jc effectively broke up grrm decided cannibalism was the taboo subject matter he would fill the later books with, so we'd really feel the increasing danger of starvation-induced cannibalism with winter's arrival (and have no trouble believing rickon's new home of skagos really is a cannibal island). however, in-universe it feels like there's some sort of environmental balance connection so that the decrease in one formerly common behaviorial abomination just allows another such abomination to fill in the gap with a sharp increase in activity, like deer overpopulation resulting from lack of predators as if all the active incest somehow stopped more people from eating themselves or other people.
