*Cries Bitterly in Gothic Romance*
Okay. So. According to the Wuthering Heights Timeline that I use, Cathy and Edgar are married in 1783. The above dress is... not 1780s.
The 1780s looked like this:

If I'm recalling my history correctly, women in that time period didn't often have a Wedding Dress in the same way we think of them today. Most of the time women would wear their best dress to be married in. I get that in a film it's normal to put more emphasis on the wedding costumes and to have them be show stoppers. But the dress Margot Robbie is wearing just... isn't it.
With the off the shoulder neckline and puff sleeves it's giving me a really weird Frumpy Baroque vibe. Or like... Disney Princess Does Undefined Ye Olde Time Period. Where are the layers? Where is the ornamentation? Where's the texture? This thing should be delicious to look at and it just isn't. It's flat and lifeless.
And gosh, the hoop skirt. Okay. So, at this point in the 18th century (1780s) the bell silhouette was achieved by using bum pads that were worn tied around the waist over one's stays.

They didn't use hoops/crinolines until the mid to late 19th century. We absolutely should not be able to see the hoop through her dress because there just shouldn't be one.
Now, historical accuracy aside, this dress just also doesn't look like Cathy Earnshaw. Cathy is a wild and rebellious young person who spent most of her childhood playing out on the Yorkshire Moors with Heathcliff. This dress tells us nothing about her personality or character. Why isn't the dress she's getting married in reflective of her savage love for nature? Or the repressed propriety of the family she's marrying into? She should look like a fox in a dog collar. An untamed thing that's been dressed up to appear docile and domestic. But this dress just looks like nothing. It's empty. And it doesn't tell us a thing about who Cathy is or what her story is about.

I need help reacting to something

I read a couple more books over spring break!
Wrong in all the Right Ways by Tiffany Brownlee was a modern adaptation of Wuthering Heights that I read as part of a project I'm doing for my Bronte class. It's definitely a YA romance and I do appreciate how the characters all felt like they were teens... which also made it a little frustrating to read lol.
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is the third Toni Morrison book I've read. It was her debut novel, but it was just as exquisitely written and devastating as the others I've read. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work!
#book count 2025#I made some good headway with stuff I wanted to read!#next I'm going back to reading bronte we're starting wuthering heights

I had to check IMBD because I thought this a joke?! They really casted a white person as Heathcliff and a person of color as Edgar? And I thought y’all were over-dramatic when you said this adaptation will be a mess…

Day 32/100 days of productivity
I solved and analysed a few questions from the 2021 paper. A few questions from physics and a few from botany. And I wrote the video explanations near the book explanations.
I read Wuthering heights for 15 minutes (only😭).
Finished lec 2 of solids, I guess.
I forgot what else I did. Oh my God, what's happening to me.
