( using written mediums like text/email is also a good safety measure when you have to communicate with abusers outside of work settings - if you don't have that un-editable transcript, it's much easier for them to forget, misremember, or actively lie about what they and you said )

How to Improve Your Written Communication Skills 8 Tips for Success
Tumblr media
Writing is an important and necessary skill, no matter the field of work or industry. It requires practice, focus, and comprehension of your audience. In this article, we will provide helpful tips to boost your written communication abilities. It requires taking the time to evaluate who will be reading the document and what is in it for them, as well as understanding their level of knowledge on the topic. This helps create effective writing by using stylistic devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, and alliteration to grab readers’ attention and specify desired action from them.

"tone indicators are someone already trying to accommodate you if you don't understand then you can ask" I'm the anon who sent that ask. If I have to google or ask what it means, that defeats the purpose.
And I've found that half the time I ask what they mean, I get a real answer, but the other half I'm told I should already know and that they're doing me a favour. If I say that it isn't much of a favour if it's confusing and they won't explain, they call me ableist.
I only see the same few tone indicators used repeatedly. Once I know what they mean, I stop having to google them. If people keep inventing news ones, then they're not helpful. I don't know which ones you run into.
It is more efficient for people to use the same shorthand than for each of thousands of people to type "(yes, I am serious)" or "(this is sarcastic, of course)" over and over and for everyone to have to read those extra words thousands of times. Or for people to just keep misunderstanding each other, which is what happens in my experience, when people don't use them. I can't tell you how many days-long arguments I've seen that could have been prevented by tone indicators.
Tumblr seems to love certain tone indicators. The person I reblogged that from loves "hellsite (affectionate)" or "[something that's usually a compliment] (derogatory)." I wouldn't know that they meant a compliment derogatorily without an indicator. I need it to understand. I am sure that you do not have to google "(affectionate)" every time you run into it and that you would be confused or have trouble interpreting things if people stopped using them and just assumed you would know which are compliments and which are insults. Please correct me if I am wrong.
The ones I see most (outside tumblr) are "/s" and "/gen" which mean sarcastic and genuine, respectively. Those are very helpful for me and I would hate for people to stop using them or for them to be perceived as bad or hostile in some way. Those are an accommodation I need, so when I see someone talking as if they are a bad thing, it bothers me. Please do not advocate for an accommodation (that helps me) to go away just because it does not help you. It's like those people who ask for videos to stop including captions because "I'm not deaf!"
I have linked a guide to tone indicators below. The only ones I can recall ever seeing not on the list are the Tumblr "(affectionate)" type or "/jk" which means just kidding. If you run into one not here, then yeah, I guess you can ignore it because that's too complicated. But I usually only see the same 4 or 5 and the idea that those are bad for people to use because you in particular don't have them memorized is kind of absurd to me.
I'm sorry people have been mean to you. Do you have any screenshots so I can see how the conversations went?
I'm not saying it's ableist to need help interpreting them at all. I can certainly understand how some people would have trouble remembering them. It might be a case of an accommodation that just doesn't help you. It is ableist to suggest that people stop using them or imply that everyone who uses them is hostile or bad in some way, though.

An Inclusive Conference Model for Our Times
Most conferences do not include us Stimpunks as either presenters or attendees. Conferences are sensory and social overwhelm. I’m fairly sure it’s supposed to be a reference to cuneiform or a similar script.

But in a universe where you have interpretative dancing birds, yes this is going to be a thing.
Incidentally, this has been a thing:
Tumblr media
This is an example of Beauchamp-Feuillet notation, devised on the commission of King Loius XIV of France to record dance footwork for the earliest version of ballet,
Now, it’s another matter entirely to recognized what the footprints mean if you’re not practiced in the interpretation of them.
But maybe having Jimmy try to recreate the dance?
(images taken from respective Wikipedia pages, linked below cut)
You never met an informational plaque you didn’t want to read, so of course that’s your first stop.
Huh. It appears to be a clay tablet with the letters stamped into it. Interesting. There are three languages on it—one you know, one you sorta recognize, and one that you can’t even begin to place. The alphabet looks like a bird tap-danced over wet cement.
The plaque reads:
We regret to inform you that this is not a staircase, but an ambush predator known as a stairweight. We strongly advise that you do not touch it. Our best estimates are that it will enter its dormant phase in the Year of the Fanged Moon.
— The Monks of Perdition
You stare at the plaque. You stare at the staircase. Who…what…how…? Even your questions have questions.
Nevertheless, you are a trained adventurer! You believe in experimentation! You kinda want some of those rubies! You pull out a granola bar, break it in half, and toss it onto the first step.
The step splits in half lengthwise, revealing a flash of red gullet, then snaps closed over the granola bar. The central pillar seems to ripple as the red gems blink closed, then re-open. A moment later you hear a very quiet gulping sound.
“Stairweight,” you say to Jimmy.
“So I see, boss.”
Jimmy isn’t a bat so you have to scale the rickety ladder to assuage your curiosity. Halfway up, you can hold the lantern up and give him enough light to circle the top of the stairweight. He returns, shaking his head.
“It just runs straight into the ceiling. And it’s anchored there by these things like big ivory roots. And boss, I think it was watching me.”
You look over at the stairweight. One ruby very slowly blinks at you.
Yeah, that’s not okay. You back out of the room.

Ah, yes. My specialty(not one fucking bit).
The only time I successfully communicate no verbally is when somebody is speaking my same language. Although I constantly attempt proper nonverbal communication I’m always very aggressive and very upset, apparently.
I mean, I can hardly communicate verbally. It takes me ten years to compose what I think to the detail I wish. Otherwise words flow unchecked without my permission and in orders that nobody understands and I’m erratic and confusing.

AACs are important for autistics that deal with communication issues. When your mouth parts don't work (verbal loss/ nonspeaking, semispeaking, selectively mute etc) or hell, you don't want to use verbal communication. And that's valid too.
There are plenty of auties that use both verbal and nonverbal communication. There are plenty of auties that prefer nonverbal communication. And that's okay.
we have semiverbal/speaking and nonverbal/speaking alters, alters who have verbal loss. a little too a lot.
in our life we've been forced to be verbal and that's not okay. our system is full of AAC users.
This is our oc Moon (which we wanna change their name) they're an AAC user and uses a wide range of nonverbal communication: communication cards, a tablet with an AAC app, written communication, printed out communication board, and TTS (text to speech). we project oh them. we mainly use text to speech and AAC apps - Honeylily
please remember it's okay to use AACs
