i think the thing that makes azula so impressive beyond just her raw skill and power at firebending is that the majority of the time she ensures she's never alone when fighting others. like sure, she'll duel when she needs to and whip ass at it, but more often than not she's strategically placed allies around her. mai and ty lee, the dai li, backup soliders and fire benders - she never refuses assistance on egotistical terms. and she really has every right to, i mean her fire is blue, that puts her in a league that no one else touches. yet that ego doesn't translate to her battle tactics
azula operates with personal arrogance, and tactical humility. i think thats one of the reasons she's such a terrifying opponent

laios and kabru being very explicit narrative and character foils of each other means you're primed to expect some extent of honesty and candor from laios at every turn throughout, even if it's to negative effect, while your impression of kabru means you expect his every action and word to bely ulterior motive or manipulation, even if it's out of good intentions. and how thoroughly this is subverted in the end, when kabru is forced by pressure and circumstance into painfully, awkwardly honest confession and conduct, forced to stand back and spectate instead of trying to pull strings and control. and laios rises up out of nowhere with an underhanded scheme so shocking and thorough it tricks everyone, and suspends them into inaction and speechless disbelief, clearing his path to the throne. i just think it's neat how they're foils and opposites until they embody each other's core traits at some of their most pivotal developmental moments

mike's problem solving skills
as much as we shit on mike for his obliviousness towards romance, its really interesting how good mike is at deciphering the upside down mystery and puzzle solving in general. typically, mike has the best judgement calls when it comes to getting shit done and general intuition. at the top of my head, i can recall several times where he was able to encounter a problem that the entire group was having and fix it instantly. some examples:
understanding that el was the key to finding will in the upside down, thus employing her help for all of s1
first to recognize that will would have died were they to close the gate with the mf still inside him + understanding how the mf worked and knew how to problem solve to overcome it (putting will to sleep so he couldn't spy, knowing that they needed a place that will didn't recognize)
came up with the entire sauna test plan, plus led billy towards the trap
found out that the number was hidden inside a dried up pen from the agent + knowing that they would have needed a hacker to get it done and using suzie's help to do it
a small one, but them overturning the car using the leverage from the linerope holders was mike's idea when they couldn't use el's powers ("told you. physics")
and so on...
i'd also like to point out the fact that in s4, the only times we get mike's POV is when he is being a leader (suzie's house, discovering the pen, etc). when it comes to the romance aspect, specifically his relationship w/ el, we get no clues from himself about how he actually feels about her (only from will and el's povs).
i'm not the most avid follower of nancy's storyline, but i'm pretty sure a lot of her judgement calls are also basically always correct (s1 w/ barb's disappearance, s2 in revealing barb's death, s3 rats, s4 w/ victor creel).
personally, besides the fact these two are smart as hell, i think that its a small way to show that the wheeler siblings were mainly taught to think with their head, and not their heart, which is why their arcs are both tied into ridding themselves of societal expectations and to go with their hearts instead. while nancy's is more tied to her independence and wants as a woman during the 80s, mike's is intrinsically tied to queerness and understanding what he wants, rather than what would make him normal.

The mindset of a perfectionist
Inside the “It’s gotta be perfect” mindset We all have unconscious patterns of behaviours that drive our actions and decisions. It’s a fascinating topic, in fact, and today I’ll focus on one of the 5 drivers that I find quite often in the coaching sessions I have with marketers – the “Be perfect” one. Is Leadership Training a Poor Return on Investment?
“I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion” Alexander the Great.
Tumblr media
Now, you might be thinking about what this has got to do with you, or the relevancy of the above quote under current circumstances might not be resonating with you.
But let me be straight to the point, nowadays, leadership crisis is one of the biggest challenges that corporate across the world are facing in their day-to-day functioning where boardrooms have turned into battlefields. Some have found answers to the above problem in leadership training.
However, others are still faced with the dilemma regarding the return on investment they would get from leadership training. Well, certain things aren’t always measured in terms of money. Why? Let’s delve deeper.
Why Invest in a Leadership Training?
Now, the success or failure of a company depends on various tangents and some people argue that innovative technology is going to rule the future so investing in technology might seem to be a better prospect for many companies.
However, remember it is the man behind the machine who holds the key to the successful deployment of any future endeavors your company might be taking up. Still confused?
Well, you see the Germans had the best armament at their disposal during World War 2, however, still the Allied got an upper hand & won the war. How? This is because of Generals like George S. Patton & Bernard Montgomery and their leadership qualities.
Nowadays, when the competition is going through the roof & your competitors are leaving no stone unturned to outsmart & outperform your organization, you need people with leadership skills like the allied generals at the helm of affairs in your organization to steer your company in the turbulent waters of the corporate world.
Now, leadership skills are not something that someone is born with, you need to hone them with proper guidance & mentorship. This is why investing in today's leadership training will produce tomorrow’s leaders who will lead your company to new highs.
Return on Impact
As stated above certain things cannot be measured in terms of money and when you are investing in leadership training for your employees, you need to measure the return on impact. That’s right the output of leadership training must be measured in terms of the impact it has on your employees.
This is because “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” John C. Maxwell.
The basic purpose of conducting leadership training for managers is to help them upgrade their skills in tune with the present demands & challenges faced by the organization.
Now, whenever your company is faced with a crisis managers who have undergone leadership training should rise to the occasion and take up the mantle. This is when you will be able to judge the impact of leadership training on them based on their decision-making skills & the way they are able to handle the crisis & turn it into an opportunity.
Why People Think Otherwise
The impact or value of leadership training on the working of an organization has been the topic of interesting debates and people on both sides of the spectrum have differed widely on their views. There are instances where companies that have invested heavily in leadership training were disappointed when it didn’t yield the desired results.
It is very important to identify what went wrong in the leadership training of these organizations. Many managers opine that the training was not beneficial because of their outdated approach. This is one of the prominent reasons why these managers were not able to deliver during the nick of time.
Secondly, it was observed that people who underwent leadership training implemented all their learning in the day-to-day functioning of their organization initially, however, in the long run, they returned to their original methods because of a lack of support from the higher echelons of their company.
On the other hand, it was observed that companies, where the higher-ups practiced and believed in the new leadership style of their managers were able to reap the benefits of leadership training. This is because “If you think you can or think you can’t, both are usually right” Henry Ford.
Moreover, you must also focus on changing the system of functioning of your organization which must be in tune with the changing leadership roles because if the system doesn’t change, then it will set people up to fail.
How is it going to Help You?
Leadership training is going to be beneficial in a number of ways for you. Now, you have to take into account two scenarios. The first one prior to imparting leadership training and the second one after leadership training. You will observe that after leadership training the productivity of the manager & his team increases.
This is because they learn to prioritize tasks and focus on output and not just on outlays. Similarly, the communication pattern of managers also undergoes positive changes which help them build good relationships and this, in turn, leads to an individual increase in performance.
In addition to this, as workplaces have become diverse and we are dealing with people belonging to varied cultural backgrounds today’s leadership training programs encompasses ways to bridge this cultural divide and inspire everyone to work in cohesion as a single unit.
Well, taking all these things into account one can infer that leadership training is a vital cog in the wheel of an organization without which it will become nearly impossible for any organization to transform its vision into reality.

If fighter pilots lived in a world of split seconds, bomber boys lived in one of agonizing hours, with too much time to think about their own end, which depended inordinately on Lady Fortune. In its testing and training programs the Air Force looked for different qualities in fighter and bomber pilots: physical strength, judgment, emotional stamina, dependability, team play, discipline, and leadership in bomber pilots; rapid hand-eye co-ordination, aggressiveness, boldness, individuality, and a zest for battle in fighter pilots. In a profile of the ideal bomber pilot, the Air Force noted:
"The attitude of crew members... was that they would gladly let some other crew have the hottest pilot in the group... if they could have the man who, when in a tough spot, where a decision which might mean life or death to them had to be made, would quickly... make the best possible decision." For bomber pilots, "intellectual traits" were more highly prized than sensory-motor skills. "Love of blood sports, cockiness... and lack of high intellectual stature would prove to be good qualifying factors for fighter pilots," said this Air Force study.

A Must-Know Guide for Management and Hiring in the Real World
A Must-Know Guide for Management and Hiring in the RealWorld
A lot of development has been done in business schools of “scientific management” considering the need for educated & trained managers. In reality, you can’t learn to be a competent manager in a classroom—beyond a few simple principles. Management is simple, but not excessively simple. In principle, Management is the act of coordinating a group of people to achieve a specific goal while…
