Three Reasons Why YOU Should To Join a Writing Group
In the age of the Internet, you can find writing groups everywhere. Though us writers are often introverted and prefer solitude in our activity, it can be helpful, and even heartwarming, to be part of a writing group.
So, here are three reasons why:
It can help you create more like-minded friends ā€“ If you are an adult, this can be particularly helpful. A writing group helps you meet new people who have the craft of writing in common, and who knows? Some of them might also be interested in hobbies like arts and crafts, crocheting, D&D, gardening, and true crime. At the same time, you may not jive with everyone in your group. However, my experience shows that most of us are non-judgmental: weā€™ve all been beginners before, after all.
It can help you focus on the task at hand ā€“ Letā€™s say youā€™re in a writing group and you meet weekly to share something youā€™ve written that week. If you want to attend that meeting and hear everyone else share what theyā€™ve written, you may also feel obliged to write a little bit. External motivation tends to be more impactful than telling yourself that you should write, right?
It can help you receive useful critique ā€“ Chances are, youā€™ll encounter someone whoā€™s been writing for longer than you have, or has more experience in writing than you do. This means they will be able to pick out things you did not notice when reviewing your writing. Plus, youā€™ll be able to meet with people who will be able to find ways you can improve, other than discussing it with friends who either donā€™t care or have less experience in critique. Not all critique is helpful, after all.
As someone who has been in various writing groups over the years, many of them have been tolerant and accepting. Many places, such as Discord servers, have strict policies against being mean and discrimination. Chances are, you will find a place that works for you, whether it is local or online.
Because my two current writing groups are local, I cannot suggest them unless you live in the area. However, they can be found locally in schools, colleges, through the NaNoWriMo website (if you still use it, of course), and in other local groups. Otherwise, you can find them online through platforms like Discord and Slack.
I hope this post was helpful. Being friends with people who write has changed my writing, and my life, and I hope considering joining a writing group does the same for you.

Welcome to @thgwritingclub
Create a safe community where we can share drafts and wips; analyze each other's work; give and ask for advice; share prompts and ideas; write collaborative works with other members and have meetings/events to talk about our progress.
Tumblr media
I know that Tumblr, in a way, already provides all of this. But I want a space that is focused on improving our writing skills and creating bonds between people. A safe place for writers, but also readers and editors. People of any level and everyone has the opportunity to have their texts read and commented on.
Fanfics are about community after all.
Sharing the love we have for the story and the characters we already love with other people and I really think that's beautiful. I was deeply inspired by many friends I made this year all united by the same goal and love for THG. Sharing my ideas, listening to their ideas, discussing the plot, writing together made the writing process for me so much more pleasurable and fun.

the urge to start a little book / film club / writing club on here is very tempting! i donā€™t talk to a lot of people but the ones that i do are the absolute sweetest. i doubt it would be of any interest though ! what i have in mind is (and this would be after discussing everyoneā€™s schedules!) would be a weekly movie night or even a bi-weekly one! weā€™d have a nice little time chatting as we watch and then afterwards we get to dig deeper + get a little silly with it. could be rewatching movies or shows too ! it would mostly just be sharing little a little joy together. we tenderly hunger together ! (plus itā€™ll definitely force me to work more and more on my writing!) you guys can share your fixations and weā€™d all go ā€œexactlyyyyā€ !
i donā€™t know though,,, does the class have any thoughts,, it would be super flexible and not very demanding because i do understand people have a life offline !

Moody Monday I
šŸŒ¹Hello Campers! Here are the responses we got for our first activity for camp NaNoWriMo. Thank you everyone who participated, if you still wanted to submit a response please do so- it's never too late to join in one of our activities. If you're not part of the club and still want to answer these questions, then reblog this post with your answers.
šŸŒ¹Also huge thank you to @caveatscriptor for creating the graphic
šŸŒ¹ Member responses below the cut:
šŸŒ¹ @jay-avian
1. Honestly, a little bit of both. I do a general outline of the main plot, as well as any worldbuilding needed. And once I start writing, I let the pacing flow naturally and the characters flesh themselves out 2. Current WIP - "The Court Magician": Forest man on house arrest must save the world from the fae 3. (not sure, will come back) 4. Fantasy, Adventure 5. Reluctant Chosen One
šŸŒ¹ @mayonayys
1. I'm definitely a planner! I enjoy a bit of chaos, but need structure for most things, and that includes writing. An example of my most extreme planner moment: I was writing up fake advertisements for my in world D&D newspaper, had to give the businesses addresses... So I stopped halfway through and had to plan out most of a market district map, which will probably never be used again 2. Aura Sighted: Gifted-kid burnout syndrome mage has to figure out how to save her sister from a psychotic King, while staying out of the way of the Prince with daddy issues. 3. Keywords: (I'll come back to this one) 4. Genres: Fantasy, Action/Adventure, Eventual Romance 5. Favorite Tropes: Found Family, Eventual Idiots to Lovers, with a hint of Enemies to Lovers Bonus: My Camp goal this year is just to get some writing done; shooting for 15k words!
šŸŒ¹ @becausethecat
1. Planning: Generally it depends. I donā€™t outline Fic usually, or random ideas that just jump out, but I do like having vague-to-solid roadmap on other ideas 2. WIP that i think Iā€™m gonna try to do: A pirate loses his ship and crew to his creditors and makes a drastic attempt to pay them off by promising to produce a rare magical artifactā€”a weather violin that specifically calls moody weather when playedā€”and he isnā€™t prepared for his quest to dump him on a small island, inhabited by one other person; the violinist who found his treasure first. 3. Key Words: Broody Boi, Dislike to Love (think animated Anastasia/Dimitri), reformed pickpocket, identity, violin + The sound of rain on a tin roof while a sad viloin plays, deserted island, survival, persons of debatable charm, BLORBOS 4. Genre is uhhhh.... Pirate Captain on a deserted island with a Moody Violinist ..... idk if it will be humor or romance or survival but itā€™s def Fantasy with Magic and whatnot 5. Tropes: Pirate on Deserted Island, Survival, is Learning to Communicate Effectively a trope? And uhhhh Iā€™m not sure how the Only One Bed will turn out thatā€™s the one I pulled out of a hat (what quantifies Idiots to Lovers bc they might be that too)
šŸŒ¹ @fanged-writer
1. former pantser, trying to plan now. don't think my previous method was working for me, so I'll see how this goes! 2. sentence: an average human is suddenly gifted 'divine' knowledge, transporting them from one dismal situation to another. 3. will need to figure these key words out, i think. 'wasps, red, gods, superstition, summer'. 4. not too sure, but got some fantasy in there... 5. rivals and rivals and more rivals. also deceit.
šŸŒ¹ @inkspellangel
1. A little of both. I plan a bit and then hope I don't pants my way too far away from that vague outline :'D 2. SSP: Grumpy punk with wolf companion has to arrest his childhood friend because of reasons he can't believe. 3. Keywords: Mad scientist, childhood friends to lovers, grumpy/sunshine friend dynamic, cave system, more vibes than plot at this point 4. Subterranean sci-fi, I think 5. 100% sunshine/grumpy friends
šŸŒ¹ @fleurtygurl
1. I think I lean more towards a pantser. Ideas come to me as I write that I would never have thought of in the planning stages of my wip. But I'm doing my best to find a way to give myself more structure. 2. Filipina in San Francisco meets cyborg private investigator, and they solve some murders. 3. Keywords: tomboy, trauma, sapphic, straight people being friends, siblings-centered 4. Sci-fi and mystery? ( i know there are technical differences between mystery and thriller, but i dont want to try and think about it.) 5. my favorite dynamic? Close sisters who can depend on one another

Want to join my writing club?
Iā€™m looking for other writers to start an online writing club with. What do I have in mind?
The goals are mutual mentorship and motivation. We celebrate each otherā€™s successes and support each other. A rising tide lifts all the boats.
Iā€™m specifically looking for prolific writers. No offence to the people whoā€™ve been working on their book for ten years, but thatā€™s just not what Iā€™m looking for. Published or not doesnā€™t matter, Iā€™m just looking for people who finish their stories.
The meetings will be held online, through Discord or Zoom or some other platform for facetiming. This means the meetings will be live, in person, with your real face and your real name.
Weā€™ll discuss our stories, successes, and setbacks and do writing sprints. Iā€™m not interested in feedbacking each otherā€™s stories, so you donā€™t necessarily need to write in English.
The meetings will take place at 8 pm mid-European time (the Amsterdam-Paris time zone), once a month on a weekday. Iā€™ll put up a poll to decide on the day.
About me
Iā€™m a woman in my late thirties, Iā€™m a professional writer and editor, and Iā€™m a mom of one.
People describe me as kind, supportive, and funny.
Iā€™m currently writing a romance series set in a supernatural world. None of my books have been published, but I plan to.
My writing pace is about one book in two years and I usually write once or twice a week. I fell out of rhythm because Iā€™m recovering from a serious illness, but I feel Iā€™m getting ready to get back in the saddle.
Interested?
Send me a message (not an ask) and tell me a few things about yourself and your writing. Iā€™m looking forward to hearing from you!
Sharing is caring!

quick question (i need this for my fic)
what's something dorcas and barty would argue about? like....a petty argument (if u want, u can add in who's on what side of the argument. not really needed, but it'd be cool :))
~šŸ“
i feel like dorcas and barty bicker in a very casual bestie way. unlike with others, barty never get upset with dorcas, itā€™s always very breezy bc theyā€™re besties like that. kind of similar to lily and siriusā€™ dynamic maybe.
so it would for example be who actually won a game of cards (ā€œyou totally cheated, juniorā€) or maybe the otherā€™s response to a shag marry avada game lmao (ā€œyou are literally just shagging anyone who looks like youā€)
i also feel like they would both tease the other about their crushes on marlene and evan.

Launch of the Igniting Writing ā€˜Mealtimeā€™ Contest 2024
Igniting Writing, Wokingham Libraryā€™s teen creative writing club, is launching our latest creative writing competition! The contest theme is ā€˜Mealtimeā€™ and itā€™s open to all Igniting Writing members, along with any Year 6-13 pupils across Berkshire that also want to join in. The competition is kindly supported by the publishing companies we have teamed up with, including the Emma Press (https://theemmapress.com/), Sweet Cherry Publishing (https://sweetcherrypublishing.com/),Ā Candy Jar Books (https://www.candy-jar.co.uk/books/), Hachette Children's Group (https://www.hachettechildrens.co.uk/), ZunTold (https://www.zuntold.com/), Faber and Faber (https://www.faber.co.uk/), Hashtag Press (https://www.hashtagpress.co.uk/), Neem Tree Press (https://neemtreepress.com/), Bloomsbury Children's Books (https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/childrens/) and Tiny Ghost Press (https://www.tinyghostpress.com/). The rules to enter are listed below:
1) All entries must centre around the contest theme of ā€˜Mealtimeā€™. You can interpret the theme however you like, but all entries must link back to it in some way.
2) All entries must be 2,000 words or less. This includes the title and any subtitles you decide to use.
3) All entries must be fiction. You can, however, submit any kind of fictional writing you like (a short story, a poem, a play, an extract from a longer story, anything else that catches your fancy - itā€™s entirely up to you).
4) All entries must be PG. This means no swearing, nudity, overly graphic gore and that sort of thing.
5) All entries must be your own original work - in other words, no plagiarism or ripping off another writer. Sadly this also means no fanfiction, but if you want to do something loosely inspired by an existing series thatā€™s fine so long as you make an effort to keep it separate from the characters and settings of the series youā€™re drawing from.
6) All entries must be submitted before the contest end date. The end date is Sunday 1 September 2024, 11:00pm UK time. There might be a day or two extra if several of the group need a little more time, but donā€™t rely on that.
7) To submit your entry, all you need to do is follow the above rules and send it through by email or direct message so that it can be shared with everyone else.
The winners will be announced at our first Igniting Writing sessions back after the summer break and there are some brilliant prizes up for grabs, so it's well worth entering. Until then, best of luck with writing your entry!

Prompt: Write a piece based on a photograph. (Thank you @inkspellangel for the photo inspo ;) )
Time brainstorming: 10 minutes
Time writing: 30 minutes
This is a piece in response to one of the prompts in our book club, Little Red Writing Hoods (@joinourbookclub).
tl;dr: Do I beta read my stuff? Is the earth flat?
I have always loved the sea, there has always been a call of the water to my very essence, that is how I had become a professional diver. I lie. I have become a diver to fulfill the stupid caprice of getting my late fatherā€™s approval. He is dead, has been so since I was seventeen, didnā€™t even send me to college. He couldnā€™t.
I swam nimbly under the old wreckage of an old ship. That wasnā€™t what I was here for; here, the same place where I had had an accident four months ago. There it was, my car, the lightsā€¦ still on? It didnā€™t matter.
My flashlight caught an old familiar face. The lone wooden statue of a cellist, perpetually playing even after it had sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Somehow it was terribly beautiful, between the wooden crevices and the slats created by its inexorable erosion there was new life, corals of every and each color, made for a beautiful net up to the musicianā€™s knee, over the green algae that painted most of his suit and half of his face, and finding purchase on the celloā€™s base it confidently extended the colorful network up to the pegbox of the instrument. This very same statue had somehow been a personal god for me. Stupid, but so is most of hope, just a stupid little thought.
That fateful night the rain was unforgivable and unavoidable, such inclement weather had been my demise, that and sending the car over the guard rails and straight into the ocean. I couldnā€™t even process the moment, it just happened, one moment I was driving slowly through the road, the next I was underwater, no air inside the car, just water everywhere. Trying to remain calm and rational is a perfectly sound saying, but no one is either under the loom of death itself. I tried to take my seatbelt off, I couldnā€™t. I tried to break any of the windows next to me, I also couldnā€™t. I stupidly cried, or tried to, underwater. I remember looking at the only surviving photo of me and my dad together, it hung under the rearview mirror inside a keychain. We were smiling for the camera, ugly Christmas sweaters could be seen, we looked genuinely happy. The rest of the photos I had destroyed, childishly. Off in the distance, that was when I first made out another face, but as my brain was quickly being deprived of oxygen, I had actually thought it was a person, I had thought that I was dying and my dad was coming to get me.
A shimmer caught my eye, the keychain. Instead of going to my poor old car, I neared the statue. Hope was stupid, and yetā€¦ My hand hovered over the uncovered side of it. A gentle expression could be seen, where the algae hadnā€™t reached yet. Playing until the end, and even beyond, how fitting. I pulled my hand down. No need to touch it, wouldnā€™t feel a thing with all the gear that weighed me down as it was, at most I would disturb the little animals that hid in the coral, and even the ones that had managed to sneak inside of it and create a new home.
I finally approached the car and took the keychain out. That had been the sole reason to comeback here, even so, somehow, this had been far more than that. That statue was more than a hallucination now. It felt like a sign. Just like hope is idiotic, signs are the most illogical of nonfactual data. In my brain all of this felt like a reaffirmation, it felt likeā€¦
ā€œAll storms will pass, and there is beauty to be had everywhere.ā€
I tried to hold back the tears. Had my father ever said something like that? Yes, I believe so. He loved self help mottos, this sounded just like it. It was stupidly perfect.

Hello Campers!
It's July, which means camp Camp NaNoWriMo has officially started. If you're looking for fun and relaxing activities to boost your creativity than come join us in our writing adventure.
We have activities planned for every day this month excluding Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some will be writing prompts/sprints, and others will be more artistic like moodboards. If that sounds interesting then please join our server and follow our tumblr posts to see what activities we are doing each day!
If you're not part of the club already and are interested in writing with us, then check out our info post about our discord server here.
Tumblr media
What is Camp NaNoWriMo?
Camp NaNoWriMo is the more laidback version of the November challenge: NaNoWriMo. So instead of shooting for 50k words, you can set whatever word count you want. If you're not into a word count goal that's okay too. You can set any kind of writing goal e.g. writing for ten minutes each day, edit a certain number of pages by the end of the month and so on. The main thing is to get you in the mood to work on your stories.
Divider taken from @sxmmerberries from their post here.
