Wright Brothers Day
Journal of Orville Wright December 17, 1903
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
That is to say, history flew today.
I can hardly find the language to convey the exhilaration and disbelief of what we have done. This morning, under gray skies and with the biting wind whipping at our faces, Wilbur and I made the last refinements to the Flyer. Every bolt, every turn of the chain, and every stroke of the engine had been checked and double-checked. It is time.
The initial attempt was mine. Wilbur held on to the side, steadying the craft on its rail as I climbed aboard. My hands trembled as they gripped the controls. A prayer escaped my lips, not for safety but for success—though I suppose, in this case, they were one and the same.
The mighty engine rumbled, and then the Flyer began its movement as if by a gushing push. And as it went faster, it will cave into space below us. It was deep down in the innermost soul of mine—the miracle of flight! It was short, only 12 seconds and 120 feet, but those moments would have been eternity. For in that fleeting moment, man left the ground and soared into the skies.
This was followed by Wilbur taking the next turn in the flying machine. Our confidence reigned with each successive attempt, the last of which carried him 852 feet in 59 seconds. I could hardly fathom it, despite witnessing it.
No cheering crowds, no bands to herald it. Just the wind and the emptiness of a field of sand to witness the act. But that is enough. After the last flight, Wilbur and I exchanged a look, and in that glance, I could see a reflection of my own thought: today the world changed forever.
The Flyer-Reality all battered within the shed, flung here and there, has been torn by winds. Perfect she is not at all, but she has proved what we long hoped would be possible.
Tonight, as I write with this kerosene lamp on bright, deep within my heart, I sip in gratitude—for trials that taught us patience, for failures that bred resolution, for my brother, one whose partnership has never wavered on this crazed trip.
This dream of flight has been with humanity for a long time: today, it became real.
- Orville

Wright Brothers Day: Celebrating the Birth of Modern Aviation
Every year on December 17, the United States observes Wright Brothers Day to commemorate the first successful powered flight in history. On this day in 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved what many believed to be impossible, changing the course of human history forever. Their groundbreaking flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, marks the beginning of modern aviation and serves as a testament…

December 16, 2016 (Wright Brothers Day):
Conrad (from PBS Kids GO!): And if you look over here, Tommy, you can see the different circular things for stuff like fuel and speed.
Tommy: Interesting...
Tara: So, Conrad, is this supposed to be an actual or plane or something?
Conrad: Well, not really. It's more like a brief glimpse of how it feels to get into a plane and buckle up. I mean, there isn't even a steering wheel on this thing.
Tara: Oh, I guess you're right.
Conrad: Besides, don't you guys still have more footage from Tommy's visit to that Wright Brothers museum thingy?
Tommy: Well, yeah, that's correct, but it's time to get back to tonight's brand new Billy & Mandy.
Conrad: Oh, okay.
Tommy: Yeah, and then we'll continue with the museum footage.
Conrad: I see.

(hey guys, IRL Davis here)
(sorry for not posting anything other than Fridays segments lately; in the Cartoon World, I've been heavily focusing on 2 things...)
(enjoying my annual transformation into the Pokémon known as "Delibird")
(working on these Fridays drawings)
(I'm hoping to get something that isn't Fridays-related out before Christmas, but we'll just have to see)
(anyways...)
(segment-wise, this Fridays show was spent celebrating Wright Brothers Day)
(in the studio, Tommy and Tara were met by Conrad, a character from PBS Kids GO! who is really into flying)
(alongside this was also footage of Tommy visiting different museums and memorial places about the Wright Brothers)
(this would also be the last Fridays show before Christmas 2016; I'll explain further when we get to December 30, 2016)

Something to remember when the climate anxiety and doomerism are coming for you:
We went from inventing flight to landing on the moon in just 66 years
I wouldn't count us out of the climate change fight just yet

Eagles of Mercy
Upon landing in Normandy on D-Day, one of Easy Company’s medics connected with three other medics of the 101st Airborne Division and set up a makeshift aid station in the church of Angoville-au-Plain, a small village a mere 10 miles behind Utah Beach. Medic Edwin Pepping of Easy Company spent hours helping another medic by the name of Willard Moore transport severely wounded soldiers in a jeep to L’église Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien, the Church of Saint Côme and Saint Damien.
Back at the church, Medic Robert Wright began to treat the many wounded while Kenneth Moore, a stretcher bearer with not quite as much medical training, helped unload the men brought to them by jeep. They had lost a majority of their medical supplies on the jump and had to treat the men with anything and everything they could find, all while under heavy artillery fire.

They accepted any and all wounded into their care, regardless of nationality, under the stipulation that all rifles be left outside the church door. Men were laid on the pews with their heads facing the aisle, pews that remain in the church to this day. Those most seriously wounded, the ones they weren’t sure would make it, were placed behind the alter and given morphine.
Tumblr media
Amidst one particularly intense shelling, a mortar fell through the roof of the church and landed in the center aisle. Miraculously, it didn’t explode, and Wright threw the shell out of a window. Pepping eventually moved on to reunite Easy Company, but Wright and Moore remained. They treated 80 seriously wounded American, French, and German soldiers as they worked 72 hours until the village was liberated on June 8, losing only two men.
The locals believe Wright and Moore landing near their village and choosing their church as an aid station to be no accident. Their church, as fate would have it, was named after two saints:
“L'église Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien, takes its name from 4th century martyrs: Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. Saints Cosmas and Damian were physicians and possibly brothers who hailed from ancient Syria, then a province of the Roman Empire. They are widely regarded to be the patron saints of doctors, surgeons, and pharmacists. In fact, the saints were renowned for healing those who were ill or wounded as well as caring for all people regardless of their background, race, or faith.“

A stain glass window was installed in the church paying tribute to these two men and a memorial was lane

A documentary was created telling the story of the Eagles of Mercy featuring interviews with some of the veterans. Watch it for free at the link below:
