Hitori-Escape Tour 2019, they're at the halfway point, so time to post reports!
消せます!
Disclaimer: These were all pilfered, ransacked, polished and ravished from my JP Twitter mutuals,,,, Who are all such kind souls,, Not only have they used their memory skills to seed Rie's words, but they even bothered to share the concert's happenings with the world wide web, AND they have urged me forward to keep on translating them... So I'll take the liberty to post them organized here... When you pass by any JP Rie fans on twitter, click hearts...💘 Shinoda’s name is shortened to SND, ygarshy’s to yg(a), and Yumao to Yu(ma) throughout...!
1 Hitorie's Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/3/2019 at Takutaku in Kyoto! Report!
Yumao's tweet "Our tour starts today! I have cut my hair too short."
The first show, the first step….
SND looked back at both of the members to say “Let’s do our best guys.” Yg nodded back. Yuma started it up…
●SND played FAST guitar while singing, yg howled out harmonies on [a] chorus. Yu snickered at one of SND's slips.
SND used Leader’s jaguar on a [very very special song].
They did their best…
●SND “Its hoooot... We always came to Takutaku in the winter so now I’m experiencing Takutaku in it's true form.... Can I take a drink break, fwaaaaah, it's hot y'know? I'm even properly hydrated y'know? This water is gonna churn in my stomach, gehh I feel sick....”
SND: "RAISE THE AIR CONDITIONING!!!!!!!!!! I DON’T GIVE A DAMN IF ALL OF THE POWER IN KYOTO GOES OUT!!!!!! GIVE TAKUTAKU ALL THE ELECTRICITY!!!!!!!!!! LIKE IT'S OPERATION YASHIMA!!!! (*In reference to the wonderful Evangelion episode: https://evangelion.fandom.com/wiki/Episode:06).
●Shinoda’s band introduction was “On bass ygarshy, on drums Yumao, and on guitar and vocals is I Shinoda. Music and lyrics brought to you by wowaka.”
●SND “Umm…We have merch…But the towels? T-shirts? They all sold out… No seriously I’m just…. We really did bring a hefty load of stock…Thank you all… Also what else sold out?” Crowd “The cap! Pens! DVD! Pouch!!” Shinoda “‘OK, whatever..... Thank you…’” ←That is exact verbatim, SND spoke in English. All that Netflix watching is showing.
●SND “By the way ygarshy, did you know they’ve stopped selling HimoQ?" yg: ....... >>>*BWOON*<<< *responds with only the sound of his bass* *HimoQ is an old school gummy candy by the brand Meiji, and-
--yg turned away with a smile that couldn’t be concealed. While behind them Yumao was playing his drums while just repeating “HimoQ.... HimoQ..... Why HimoQ...”
●Lastly there were also many reports on people being showered on by SND’s sweat. Stay hydrated please sensei
●Nishimaki Taichi their cameraman’s comment: I was drenched in the sweat of Takutaku’s splintering heat until just a minute ago, yet now that I’m almost back home, this whole day feels like it could’ve been a dream. Lol
This is the start of a fabulous new year.
●Shinoda’s comment My ears are still pulsing,,, Takutaku of Kyoto, thank you so much. I’m glad I was able to come and be a part of your 45th anniversary, I’m happy I was able to see everybody’s faces. The journey begins. We’ll be in Okayama tomorrow, hope to see you there.
●The setlists I won’t repeat, just to avoid spoilers for any possible goers!
2 Hitorie's Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/4/2019 at CRAZYMAMA 2nd Room in Okayama! Report!
All members have interactions, I'm relieved..
●SND “Yesterday was so hot I thought I was going to puke, I’d only ever been to Takutaku in the winter not the summer… I came to Crazymama today shaking in fear but… Air conditioning is the BEST! The number one necessity for any venue is!!!! heavy-duty!!!! Air-conditioning!!!!!”
●As soon as SND started talking about yesterday, Yumao dashed up front in a rush to talk. He asked to borrow SND’s mic so he could join in on the MC,
The way they were standing next to each other got them called out for looking like a stand-up comedy duo.
●Yu “Yesterday I mouthed the words ‘Were concerts always this painful?’ to ygarsh 5 whole times and he didn’t understand me,” SND “Well of course not (laughing).” Afterwards when Yu did ask him, ygarsh responded with "They aren’t." Yu thought he was the only one dying, ah sweet relief~, he says.
●Yesterday did Yuma really get exhausted enough to collapse against the wall? Did SND slide atop speakers to then stick the landing, singing with his knees against the floor? It's out there...
●Yu and SND bickered with each other over who watches more Netflix. (They both praised the Netflix show The Naked Director etc. on Twitter recently also).
●SND “By the way ygarshy did you know that cicadas actually live longer than 1 week?”
ygarsh “BWOON♪”
(Cicada’s having only a life span of one week is a common myth in Japan. Also this interaction mimics yesterday, is SND subtly taunting yg in new ways the new staple for the Mannequin intro? Amen.)
●SND tweet: "Thank you Okayama, after doing 2 concerts in row, I see that I really am capable of singing. We'll be back,, until then,,"
●Katou Haruhisa, the founder of LUCK'A Inc. who’s produced Rie’s merch for so many tours, QRTed today's official backstage photo and strutted with pride: "They're all wearing great shirts lol #I made this"
3 Hitorie's Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/12/2019 at the five morika in Iwate prefecture! Report!
Yumao's tweet "Tomorrow is Morioka. The next day is Sendai. I hope to see you there!"
●In a small box with but a platform as the stage and a metal bar between the rockstars and the crowd, what happens if a SND sizzles up and sits down on the bar, gets up and gets down on the floor? FAN SERVICE. LOTS OF FAN SERVICE, THAT'S WHAT. SND was poked by fans, clapped by fan, had his head pet by a fan…. Amazing..
●SND praised the drama "Methanol” he watched on Amazon Prime. ●SND blessed the cool air of Morioka and rebuked the weather up in Tokyo. "I've still been walking around in shorts and sandals." *Looks down and checks himself out* "I ate such a ridiculous amount of grilled meat yesterday, I'm worried about my figure" "We all ate a ridiculous amount"
●SND "By the way ygarshy did you know that honeybees' body temperature can go up to 50 degrees celsius?"
yg "....*BWOOON*" (goes into bass intro)
(The series...It's certain.. last time it was SND's provocative tidbits about a snack discontinuing.. then long-living cicadas, now..this.)
4 Hitorie's Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/13/2019 at Sendai darwin in Miyagi prefecture! Report!
●All the effects smoke made Yumao, in the back of the stage, look like a mirage... Yumao got up and called himself a mirage... Yumirage bamboozle... From there the crowd was riled up into cheering: “Yumao~ Yumao~ You’re so cute Yumao~”
Yuma kept posing and hugging his hands against his chest* “Thank you...” SND “You pretty boy...” Yuma “I'm snatched everybody... My wig is like snatched...” SND “Snatched, snatched... What are you a Twitter fangirl.” (*Yumao was using the fujoshi term "尊い".) ●During encore intermission the electric fan next to the stage picked up yga’s shirt and blew it up, exposing yga. Laughter was induced among the crowd, and SND, who missed the whole thing, was left all confused as to why everyone was laughing—. ●SND “By the way ygarshy, it’s Friday the 13th but, did you know that Jason doesn’t actually use a chainsaw?”
yg “*BWOOOON*” ●Someone dived during the last song... As in, a fan started climbing up on other fans and rolling around up there. Staff handled it, and their love for Rie is blazing but... Etiquette and respect for the show space is the best way to enjoy the best show!! Please... SND’s tweet: “Sendai performance complete. Thank you, thank you, thank you”
5 Hitorie’s Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/25/2019 at Koube VARIT in Hyougo prefecture! Report!
Yumao's tweet "Today is Koube, tomorrow shall be Hiroshima. I hope to see you there!"
●SND MC speech "Did you guys have fun today? I think there's a lot of mixed emotions right now. If you didn't have fun, know that we're coming back here again. And then if you still don't have fun again, we're still coming back here again." ●Encore intermission! Crowd as they were walking back out "ygarshy! Yumao! Shinoda!" Yumao, pretending to be a person in the crowd in a scheme for instigation: “Yumao~~!” The crowd “Yumao….?” Yumao “Yumao…? Yumao!!!” Crowd “Yumaooo~~~!” SND “You sound like a Pokemon, crying your own name as if you’re a Pikachu.” Yumao “Yumao!" SND "Can neither of you (or yg) talk normal on mic."
Yumao *Goes and sits down at his drums* Crowd "Yumao~" *Plays a drum trick* “Yumao~~~” *Plays an even more flavorful trick* “Yumaoooo~~~” *EVEN MORE* “YUMAOOO~~~~”
SND “He’ll keep doing that if you keep it up, so keep pampering him.”
●SND “Backstage, they have redbull right, so before the show I couldn’t get over how delicious it was and I kept glugging, and so I was ready to burp throughout the whole first song. SND tweet after: I was in danger of deranging into the wet pants monster. ●Also Shinoda was hopping around playing guitar and he bumped into ygarsh at some point, of who seemed super annoyed—. ●SND “Remember last show, I mentioned Jason, I said there's actually no chainsaw? Well I watched the second movie and, he gets attacked by a chainsaw in that one!” yg *Makes a face as if questioning if that gag was his queue* SND *Nods* yg *>BWWOOON<* (Into the Mannequin intro)
●In the post concert photo Yumao seems to be drinking a Chocola BB, a vitamin B2 supplement to help with acne, mouth sores, and overall exhaustion....
●SND tweet: Koube concert: complete, thank you all. Playing at VARIT is, truly, fantastic,,, I’ll meet y’all in Hiroshima tomorrow. Until then,,,
6 Hitorie’s Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/26/2019 at Second Crutch in Hiroshima prefecture! Reports!
●SND “By the way ygarshy-kun, did you know that Mocomichi Hayami started a youtube channel!”
yga *>BWWOOON<*
(*Mocomichi, dubbed “The olive oil fairy“, is an actor who gained internet fame after his displays on the TV show ‘MOMO’S Kitchen’ where he would dump HUGE AMOUNTS of olive oil over his food, ignore the recipe requested of him, and then praise his cooking like crazy in the end. He was a riot! And he’s truly skilled at cooking! He's won Gourmand cookbook awards, he loves olive oil, he has his own kitchen brand, he was in the Kamen Rider 555 movie where he got killed by monsters halfway through, he loves olive oil- Anyway his channel is here.)
+ SND used wowaka’s red jaguar guitar in today and yesterday's concerts. Introduced (W)HERE with "As Hitorie we only make good songs, we only make God songs. And this is a good one even out of the good ones".
●Crowd “What did you guys eat for lunch!” SND “For lunch I ate soba.” Crowd “Booo! Eat okonomiyaki!” (*Hiroshima is famous for it) “Screw that assholes!!!” “Whyyyy just try it!!!”
THEN YG TALKED
SND “And ygarshy gave Yumao an egg sandwich.” yg “… ...Uhm..” Crowd “!?!?!? Woooahh!!!” yg “Shut up for a second.” Crowd *Still bustling, not listening* yg “Over something so silly…. why are you all excited….” yg “… So uhm I just wanted to say that…. Yumao likes eggs.”
Post show Yumao tweeted “I like eggs.”
●SND tweet “The Hiroshima show: done. A rare event occurred today huh. Y’all were lucky… in a way? That aside I had fun. Thank y’all. I’m off to have a drink.”
7 Hitorie’s Hitori-Escape Tour, 9/26/2019 at Sapporo SPiCE in Hokkaido prefecture! Reports!
Yumao's tweet "Today is Sapporo. I hope to see you there! Ahh the first magnitude stars".
●SND ”Hokkaido, you’re so full of spirit! It’s ‘cause RSR had to cancel the first day, isn’t it!? How many of y’all missed out on seeing Number Girl?” *Hands rising all over* SND “Muahaha!!!! Well I already got to see them!!! Poor you!!!” (*Rocking Sun Festival last month was canceled due to Typhoon 10 hitting Hokkaido).
●Shinoda rued and revered the heat. Said that Sapporo’s been the second sweatiest show after Kyoto. Crowd “Let’s make it the hottest!” SND “No! You can’t beat it. That was a traumatic experience, I thought I was gonna die. But we can still make the excitement levels the hottest!”
●Encore intermission and the usual outfit change: SND “Aren’t you hot in that?” Yumao “Yeah, this sweatshirt is way too big for me. Oh, because it’s Shinoda’s” It was too hot for SND so he made Yumao wear and promo the official merch. SND opened his mouth to make a comment when the crowd slipped in with “Yumao you’re cute wearing that~~ so cute~~!” cheers. SND “Shut up I’m talking!!” SND “….I’m sorry for yelling!” ‘Apologizes before things go downhill’ Crowd kept the spirit high by asking ygarsh if he wanted to eat pizza, yg nodded his head, then scooted towards the mic as if to say something- but turned back... He tricked everybody! Rie weren’t going to let him get away with that, they had to pick on him for revenge!
Crowd “Hello! [At yg]” SND “What?! You’re resorting to teaching him the basics of conversation?” (SND and Yu laughing out loud) SND “He’s not an AI y’know??” (Yuma has his hands on his stomach at this point). yg *Still not talking* SND “Ahh what are we gonna do with him” SND “yga~rshy~kun~, have some fun with me~~!”
yg “*>>>BWOOOOON<<<*
●SND tweet: Sapporo concert: complete!! That was way too fucking hot!! Damn ridiculous! That’s what makes it so good. Thank you.
8 Hitorie’s Hitori-Escape Tour, 10/10/2019 at UMBER in Shizuoka prefecture! Reports!
Yumao's tweet "Today's Shizuoka!"
●A wild cockroach appeared before Yumao and SND backstage during the intermission.
It was a huge one, scurrying across the stage walls throughout the end of the show regardless of its own size.
●yg offered Yuma the rights to his front stage mic for Yuga and SND to be able to talk about it together, so he pulled at his mic in front of him…. Only for the cable to come spiraling out, yanked from the jack, off went the XLR connector, and all. yg's power move left him laughing hysterically. yga laughed!!!!! He laughed as he gave Yumao a powerless mic!!
●With the power move to piston off of, “Professor Yumao” was on the case to give a “lecture” with his cockroach wisdom! He told us about how the ones with the perfect figures come from the outside and live under trees, german cockroaches like to stay inside and come from the inside...
SND “Back when I used to live in a rundown apartment in Nagoya, there was 2 perfect cockroaches always waiting for me in front of my apartment”. Yu “Outside, right!!”
yga *Frozen up and now hiding against the wall*
●Prof. Yumao also gave another lecture about Shampoo from the anime Ranma 1/2, complete with “Ne!” imitations, SND piped in also until he realized something- and then got angry at Yuma because only few will know who he’s talking about....
SND “So tell me, what time is it?” Yu “Time to talk about things everybody will understand!” SND “No it’s encore time!” Yu " :O "
yg *Still hiding against the wall away from the nerds*
●SND “ygarshy! Ygarshy! Get a good look at this!” yg *Nods at him* SND *Proceeds to pose like the Dragon Ball Z Kamehameha* “Hah!” yga “>>>>*BWOOOOOOOOON*<<<”
●SND tweet: “Shizuoka show: complete, thank you so much. I had a lot of fun. We’ll be back. Nagoya will be tomorrow. Until next time,,,”
9 Hitorie’s Hitori-Escape Tour, 10/11/2019 at SPADE BOX in Aichi prefecture! Reports!
●Hasegawa-san, the drummer of SND’s past past band “Dr. Right” from around 2007 (See video of youngin SND and crew performing: https://nico.ms/sm11604475?ref=share_others_spweb…), he also payed a visit to the show!!!! And took pictures with SND! >See https://twitter.com/toshiya230/status/1182631585230704640
●First song SND immediately messed up the first note and the music halted, Yu and the crowd had to urge him onward-!
●SND “Hitorie is great. Hitorie’s songs are great. Only badass songs. Before I joined, Leader sent me demo versions and said “I want to do songs like this”… Electricity rushed through my veins, this is gonna be a revolution, am I really going to be a part of this?! I thought.”
●The stage at the venue is one that shook like crazy from everyone’s vigor, Rie seemed to enjoy the ride.
●SND “I left Nagoya, went up to Tokyo, and now I’m back in Nagoya, singing nonetheless... I’m not embarrassed carrying the mic to sing non-guitar songs anymore."
●SND "After 9 shows doin’ this, it's really hit me. Hitorie really make great songs! But even among all of them this one is peachy… Wait no one says that? This one’s at the tippy-top. ….Wait no one says these words in Tokyo, nor Nagoya?? Ah whatever let’s go” (The original words were ドンズバ and ダントツ, both old niche words).
●Encore intermission, Yumao came out in front of the mic then… Clenched his fist up into the air and stood stout! SND “You’re not gonna talk, now, what are you doing?” Yu “Freddie Mercury, is in the house!!”
“This move isn’t in Bohemian Rhapsody, b/c once the scene starts he’s already on the piano but, before the show Freddie does the *poses again*!!! SND “So that’s what you were doing? Even though you play drums? Drums aren’t a piano?” Yu *👌* SND “They are a little bit similar huh hahaha”
●Rie wished everyone safe travels home through Typhoon 19! They even cut the MC short to ensure swift departure- SND “I bet y’all would go off tweeting “Their chitchat was so long I couldn’t get home! Fuck them!” Well we’re fortunate, one day later and it would've been cancelled.."
●Then, the usual Thing.... SND “ygarshy, ygarshy! A fly seems to have sorta, landed on your bass over there!” yg *>BWWON*< (Interrupting SND’s sentence with a rushed note).
●SND tweet "Nagoya concert: complete. SPADEBOX shakes like crazy, it's such fun. Thank you so much. Make it home safe y'all. And let's meet again. Until next time."
🍕~~END~~🍕
((((((Shinoda, constantly: "I have a phobia of bugs" Also Shinoda, constantly: *His ways to provoke ygarsh involved cicadas, bees, cockroaches and flies.* + *Advises people dealing with heartbreak to go watch videos of giant hornets VS Japanese honeybees.* + *Draws super detailed cicadas in his manga Chikyuu Monogatari.*
Shinoda you maso.)))))
Ahhhh also! If you're a member Hitori-Atelier!-- (Which you should be!!! Because not only are Hitorie snazzy and there's the upcoming message campaign, but ALSO because Rie is always seeking more vigor which I KNOW YOU GUYS HAVE, I've seen your liberal usage of the almighty exclamation marks and emojis. You can't hide it, so show 'em some more of your energy!!!!!🙌🙌🙌)
--Shinoda has been periodically blogging about backstage tidbits and I've been translating those for fun so, plop: https://privatter.net/u/boat_manju

Sonali Jaffar – The Writer’s Secret
Sonali Jaffar, the essayist turned maker who is understood for the thought of 1 of the longest-running shows on Indian TV Yeh Hai Mohabbatein on Star Plus by Balaji Telefilms. She began her profession as a writer and later became towards story writing and with the assistance of a lover she ended up inferring Ekta Kapoor and from that time onwards, as they call, the remainder is history. As of now, Sonali has three shows on air as a maker that comes with Tujhse Hai Raabta on Zee TV, Papa accidentally on Star Bharat, and Meri Hanikarak Biwi on and television. during a discussion within the interview, she discusses the changing universe of the 'Nitwit Box' and the way it actually proceeds to awaken and fulfill her consistently. Passages from the meeting:
You began your excursion as an essayist for a few notable TV shows. From where you identify this innovativeness and what is the technique of your composing style.
I plan to make thoughts from a real circumstance and afterward weave them around drama. for example, the story of Devanshi on Colors was really a true story that I read during a record, where a touch infant was discovered within the stuff on the brink of a sanctuary. Additionally, I allow my creative wings to fly and consider ideas, which whenever applied to genuine may destroy the tranquility of human beings. Thus, I plan to make harmony between the 2 digressions and continue engaging the gang.
Presently, you're within the shoes of a maker. Which one is additionally energizing and why?
Sonali Jaffar:- being a maker involves such a lot of duty that you simply can't envision as an author. the 2 of them are distinctive inside and out. As an author, you've got the liberty to go away, yet as a maker, you can't. Likewise, as a maker, you ought to make certain about your subject and substance. the 2 of them have their own arrangement of difficulties, and that I love shuffling between the 2 (grins). I plan to be an innovative maker who knows the subtleties of composing and furthermore the difficulties of making a show.
You are a working lady, a spouse, and a mother also. How would you create an equilibrium?
Individuals consider it a craft of adjusting, yet I think it's anything but craftsmanship. it's something all the women are honored with thus do I. I'm a working lady, yet on behalf of me, my family starts things out. So in straightforward words, I'm a full-time mother and low maintenance proficient who loves entertaining the thoughts that she notices while assuming the part of a mother and a spouse.
How would you see the move in Indian TV from everyday cleansers to the important world and chuckling shows?
It is anything but a move. an excessive amount of an equivalent thing will drive an individual crazy that's the thing that the TV crowd requests and therefore the channels are simply serving various assortments as cleansers, chuckling, and unscripted TV dramas. all of them co-territory and help the divert to run easily regarding benefit and costs. Unscripted TV dramas are affected by using plans and no channel can remain just with it.
With regards to gratefulness, TV authors scarcely get their contribution. What does one get to state about it?
Truly, I'm not inspired by grants. I trust in remunerations than grants. Also, thus far as that's concerned, I surmise all the TV essayists are being paid well. it's going to sound unusual however the TV scholars are paid in a way that's better than the film journalists, remembering their diligent effort and time venture. I'm of the sentiment that no TV essayist within the here and now feels sidelined, they're glad seeing their bank balance (giggles).
With the intrusion of digitalization in media outlets, does one think things have changed for the sake of substance?
Indeed, to a huge degree content has changed. I trust TV has taken a secondary lounge for obvious reasons. Regarding content, TV has made a stride back and is investigating the components of heavenly powers, which I surmise the computerized market has not investigated at now.
OK like better to be separated from the association? Clarify.
I am not within the least a bit of the association and that I never want to be. I'm cheerful in my space, where I continue changing myself continually. Change is simply consistent and in my view, that's the simplest thanks to making due during this serious industry.

Sony’s Akiva Goldsman’s Nikolaj Arcel’s Stephen King’s The Dark Tower
When people ask me what are my favorite book(s): Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' series is high on my list. I was introduced into it with obviously, 'The Gunslinger,' around 2008-ish. Didn't finish reading the series until fall 2010. Right after the last sentence of 'The Dark Tower,' I was not only an avid constant reader - but it inspired me to write stories. You see, the series not only opened my eyes to the imaginative world of creating different worlds, but also blending genres together, and mashing up characters from other pieces of work into the mix...building this vast 'verse.
As I was re-reading the books recently, I caught references I didn't notice the first time around. I also kept on picturing a TV show, like 'Game of Thrones,' as adaptation to the series. Unfortunately, the fans [constant readers, like me] will not get such a thing. Instead - we have a film just unleashed to the masses that has earned just under 20% worth of bad reviews, and will most likely bomb at the box office (though I do believe it will earn some income - especially in the state of Maine).
I could be one of those snubs that will bitch about every little detail (Roland isn't black, blah-blah-blah), nitpick about the runtime, or completely write off the movie before making the attempt to actually see it. Instead, I did something I don't normally do. Ready for this?!? I set my expectations real low (but not as low as an low-man, get it - HAHA!) I turned off my brain and my 'what the fuck' radar. And I went into the theater knowing exactly what I was getting myself into. Coincidentally, I had a similar experience last year at this time - when I picked myself up a copy of 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.' I knew it wasn't going to measure up. I knew it wouldn't be as polished. And the end result - very well done fan-fiction for what it was worth.
'The Dark Tower' film is not a straight adaptation of 'The Gunslinger,' or its sequels - but rather a sequel of sorts to the series, while borrowing elements from 'The Gunslinger,' 'The Waste Lands,' and 'Wolves of Calla' - with sprinkled references to other parts of series - on-top of some clever Easter-eggs from King's body of work ('The Shining' being a heavy contributor). That itself will divide what little audience it will get this weekend. Some will hate it. Some will admire it. Some will cringe. I did all three while watching the film.
THE GOOD:
There were some damn great shots scattered throughout the film. The tower itself looked as grand as my imagination of it. The cast was solid (I had no problem with a black Roland - he harnessed the character well). I even enjoyed the 'alright, alright, alright' Lincoln car salesman's approach of the Walkin' Dude, ahem, Man in Black.
THE BAD:
While there were some great looking shots and settings, there were moments in the film that looked real cheap. It's almost as if they went more grander of scale than they could afford. Keep it simple, man. The charm of the first Dark Tower book, 'The Gunslinger,' lies in the simplicity of it. If you are going to introduce an entire universe to the film audience - don't make it anymore complicated than it needs to be. Every studio (and their greedy share-holders) wants to duplicate Marvel/Disney's success of a cinematic 'verse. The beauty of it is nine years ago, the 'verse was introduced to a small-scale (especially these days) 'Iron Man.' It was simple, and it worked.
I can understand the frustration of the critics when it comes to this film - there is so much shit crammed into it, and for no reason whatsoever. And though I admired the efforts of cherry-picking elements through-out the series - it's the main reason why one of my favorites, Steven Spielberg, didn't succeed in winning the heart of J.K. Rowling. The first attempt at a Harry Potter film - he had the idea of combining elements from all the books into one film (similar to 'Mary Poppins.') I am sure going that route, it would have earned some money - maybe some fans. But it would've been a magical cluster-fuck, and wouldn't have been revered like the Potter films that exist today.
And just think, we 'almost' had that with 'The Dark Tower.'
THE UGLY:
The film was supposed to be released January of this year. It was held back to fix some of the CGI. It was later reported that the film had production problems. Watching the film, I don't really sense any continuity issues (which usually is presented quite apparent when there is production issues, i.e. 'Fantastic Four' and 'Suicide Squad.')
But for a film that was held back for eight months - the studio could've polished the CGI a little better. That is my biggest gripe about the film - the CGI looks as phony as a Sci-FI channel original movie. In fact - the show, 'Once Upon a Time' came to my mind as I was dumb-founded over some of the effects.
SOOO...:
Was I disappointed? Was I surprised? Did I enjoy it? Well - a mixture of all of that. I certainly didn't hate it. I also didn't love it. And you know what - I wanted to both hate it for the liberties it took, but I also wanted to love it because I cherish the series it's based off. In the end - wasn't as bad as I was led to believe. Don’t be discouraged, constant readers. It's no 'Shawshank,' 'Green Mile,' 'Carrie,' 'Misery,' 'Shining.' It's also not an 'Lawnmower Man,' 'Riding the Bullet,' 'A Good Marriage,' 'Graveyard Shift,' or 'Under the Dome.'
It's somewhere in the middle, which was probably Ka's doing. We could've gotten an HBO series. Instead - we got this film, that's neither pleasant or evil.

Type: Imagine | One Shot About Anyone of the guys Rating: Rated PG Word Count: 2,310 Enjoy! I tossed and turn in the bed, the sheets wrapping around me. I struggled to get free as I sat up gasping for air. It was just another one of those nightmares, I sighed as I looked around. I removed the sheets from my body as I placed my feet over the edge. The coldness of the floor ran through my body, sending shivers up my spine. I just wanted to crawl back into bed, the sun wasn't even out yet. I knew if I did then the nightmare would come back. I got off of my bed grabbing my robe wrapping it around my body. I made my way into the kitchen, flipping the switch on. I turned on my coffee maker, placing a tea pod in. I looked out the window as the team started to make. Once it's finished I grabbed the cup, holding it with both hands as I sat down at the table. I brought it up to my lip slightly burning my tongue. I placed the mug down on the table as I stared into the darkness outside. I heard the door open and close as my roommate came in. "Why are you up?" He asked as he placed his bag down. "Just a rough night" I turned to look at him. "Nightmares again?" he asked as he leaned against the doorway. "Yeah, " I sighed as I turned my focus back to the window. "What's out there?" he asked as he sat down next to me. "Nothing, just darkness, but it calms me down" I grabbed my mug. "Yeah, it has a way of doing that, " he smiled slightly. "So why are you getting home so late?" I looked at him. "The club kept me late, " he looked up at me. "I hate you being out so late, " I placed my hand on his arm. "Oh, you do?" he smirked. "Of course I do, " I rolled my eyes playfully. He looked down at his phone, calling the pizza place ordering our favorite pizza. He grabbed my hand, leading me to the couch, he sat back pulling me to him. I sat down next to him, resting my head against his chest as he flipped through the channels. The door bell rung he slightly moved me as he got up to get the door. He paid for the pizza as well as tip the guy before bringing the box over to us. I curled back into his arms as we started to eat the pizza. Once we finished eating, he placed a blanket over us. We started to watch a movie but we both ending up falling asleep. I was awaken by the flash of the tv in the morning. I sat up as I looked at him asleep on the couch, I smiled to myself before looking at the tv. I finally found the remote and turned it off as he started to wake up. "Oops, did I wake you?" I asked. "No, " he sat up as he stretched. "What you want for breakfast?" I asked. "Get dressed, I'm taking you out for breakfast, " he smiled slightly. I smiled slightly before making my upstairs. I picked out a pair of jeans and a top before getting into the shower. I allowed the water to run down my body, allowing the heat to warm me up. I could see him standing at the door from the corner of my eye, I bite my lip as I turned to face him. I could see the smile grow on his face as his eyes wander over my body. I motion for him to join me as I looked at him. He took his shirt off throwing it on the floor before undoing his pants. Allowing them to fall to the floor, stepping out of them as he edges closer. He slipped his boxers off, walking out of them before getting into the shower. He moved behind me as the water ran over him, I turned to face him. He leaned down to kiss me softly, placing his arm around me. "Isn't it the best of both worlds?" I looked at him. "Yes, it is, living with my best friend plus she's an amazing girlfriend" he smiled. "Why thank you" I placed his lips against his. I kissed him softly before pulling away, I washed off his body. He took the soap and started to wash me off, running each other off before getting out of the shower. I wrapped a towel around my body as my stomach started to growl. He also wrapped a towel around his waist as we made our way to the bedroom. Of course he was the quickest one to get ready, but this time I wasn't too far behind him. He walked to the top of the stairs and bend his knees slightly, I smiled as I got onto his back. He walked downstairs and left the apartment as we made our way to the car. He put me down, allowing my feet to touch the ground before letting me go. I got in front of him standing on my tippy toes kissing him softly as he pushed me towards the car. He pulled away slightly as he opened the door for me. I smiled against his lips before getting into the car, making his way to the driver side. I intertwined our fingers together as we drove down the highway. Of course with New York traffic it seemed like it took forever until we parked at our favorite cafe. He waited for me to get out of the car, taking my hand in his as we walked in. We got our favorite place and as always, we order what we normally order. "Have anything planned for today?" he asked. "Not really, just needed to do research" I nodded. "Oh yeah, I forgot to ask how is school going? Plus the magazine?" he asked. "School is going good, I will graduate this summer" I smiled. "I'm really proud of you babe, how about the magazine?" he looked at me. "They are a pain in my ass and always downing my work, but I think it's getting better" I looked up at him. "They will soon realize how amazing your work is and regret not using it soon, " he brushed his thumb against my hand. "Working tonight?" I asked. "Yeah, but today is ours" He smiled. "That's good, what do you have planned?" I asked. "That would ruin the surprise" he smirked. Our food finally came to the table, the conversation fell silent as we ate. I never knew what he had planned or did I really care, as long as I was with him. I knew I needed to do research, but that could wait until he went to work. We finished our food as I gathered my phone and purse, he went and paid for the food. He opened the door for me as we walked out of the cafe and back towards the car. We made our way to the ferry, he parked the car. I didn't ask any questions and got out of the car. He grabbed my hand as he led me onto the boat, the boat that would take us to the statue of liberty. I looked at him in surprise as we took our seats. "What?" he wrapped his arm around my shoulders. "How?" I asked. "Just been planning a special day" He smiled. "I've never been" I looked at him. "Well now you can't say that" he smirked. "You guess not, " I kissed his cheek. "Just wanted to see that smile on your face, " he held me closer to him. "You always put a smile on my face, you don't need to do things like this babe" I held his hand as I cuddled into him. It didn't take long before we were off the boat and standing right next to the statue of liberty. We started to walk the stairs to get to the top and there were a lot of them too. About two hours after we started to climb the stairs we finally made it to the top. "Come here, " he grabbed my hand and lead me to the window. It was a beautiful view as it was breathtaking, but also very scary. I stepped back so I wouldn't feel like I was falling, but it was terrifying. He got behind me wrapping his arms around me, resting his chin on my shoulder. As we stood there taking everything in, I started to feel how lucky I was. I leaned back against him as his grip grew tighter, just looking out towards the water. "Beautiful, " he whispered in my ear. "It is, breathtaking" I smiled. "There is something I wanted to ask you, " he said. "What would that be?" I asked. "I met you over 4 years ago in English class, it's been over a year since we have lived together. I'm the luckiest guy around that gets to wake up to his best friend every morning. You were there for me through the toughest time in my life and the good, I wanted to know would you marry me?" He asked as he got down on one knee. I turned to face him, but realize he was down on one knee with a ring out. I placed my hands over my mouth as I looked at him. I could feel the tears build up in my eyes as he searched for an answer. I quickly nodded my head yes to give him a response since I couldn't find the words. He slipped the ring on my finger as he stood up. Taking me in his arms as everyone around us started to clap. I couldn't believe that he actually planned everything out and it was perfect. I looked down at the ring as he kissed my forehead. I smiled as I looked up at him, he placed his hand against my chin. I leaned towards him allowing my lips to touch his as we kissed softly. We finally started the trip back down the stairs and back onto the boat. I leaned my head against his shoulders as we went back to the shore. We walked back to the car hand and hand, he pushed me against the car. Placing his hands on my cheeks as he pressed his lips against mine. I placed my hand on his sides as I kept the kiss between us. As it started to get more intense I pulled away resting my forehead against him. "It's been a wild day" I bite my lip slightly. "Yeah, but amusing" he smiled as he brushed his thumb against my chin. "Yeah, it has been" I looked up at him. "Want to get something to eat?" he asked. "Just take out so we could cuddle at home, " I said as I placed my hand on his chest. "Sounds like a plan, " he nodded as he opened my door. We both got back into the car and got our favorite take out before making our way back to the apartment. I slipped my shoes off at the door as I made my way upstairs. Switching my outfit for something more comfortable, his baggy tee shirt and just my panties. I made my way back downstairs as he was finding something that we could watch. I sat down next to him as he handed my food before leaning back on the couch. We started to eat as we flipped through the channels finally landing on something to watch. I laid my head against his shoulder as I finished my food, as he placed his arm around me. "I like our nights like this, " he broke the silence. "Yeah, it's nice just to spend time with each other" I smiled as I played with his hand. "Better than being in a club, " he kissed my forehead. "But that is where we meet" I said. "I know that, but now I'm not looking for anything. I have you, " he brushed his thumb against my hand. "You're so sweet" I kissed him softly. "Why thank you, " he smirked. I rolled my eyes slightly as I looked back at the tv. He placed his chin against my chin, turning it back towards him. He leaned down slightly placing his lips against mine. I placed my hand against his neck as I kept the kiss between us. He pulled away slightly as he searched the remote. Turning the TV off before placing his attention back on me. He got up from the couch, turning back to me picking me up. He took me upstairs moving us into the bedroom. He laid me down as he moved over me, leaning down to kiss me softly. I looked up at him as he pulled away, I could feel the tiredness of today creep in. I yawned slightly as I felt my eyes getting heavier. He smiled at me before laying beside me pulling the blanket over us. I snuggled close to him as I started to drift off. He held me close as he also started to drift off. In the morning I woke up without him, I looked down at my hand as I noticed the ring. Nope, it wasn't a dream it actually happens and I was going to marry my best friend. I wanted to have the wedding in central park but I didn't know how that would happen. Nor did I realize how much time and effort that it took to plan a marriage. I had his help, of course, but it was pretty hard, but I knew the end result would be perfect.

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 2/10/17
Last night, my friend Mike and I went to check out The Lego Batman Movie. Seeing as how we were the only two people in the theater, I’m not quite sure what its weekend box office is gonna look like. I bet John Wick: Chapter 2 takes #1, since that’s where everyone seemed to be heading. Anyway, I LOVED the film. First up, it considers EVERYTHING canon. If you saw it onscreen, then it happened in that universe. The whole thing is kind of surreal, as the movie focuses on Batman’s loner status, while also confronting his complicated relationship with The Joker. On the Batman Beyond cartoon, there’s an episode where old Bruce Wayne and his protege, Terry McGinnis, go to a Batman-themed musical. Bruce can’t get over how goofy the whole thing seems, but I feel like this film is the movie version of that musical. It doesn’t have the camp of the ’66 show, but it’s a movie that never really takes itself seriously. I loved the liberties they took, like making Jim and Barbara Gordon people of color (voiced by Hector Elizondo and Rosario Dawson). It doesn’t hurt the story any, while bringing some diversity to the Lego world. I also liked how it tied in concepts from The Lego Movie, such as the fact that Batman is a Master Builder. I’m not going to spoil the movie for you, but I feel like it’s strong until the middle of the second act, at which point it switches from a Lego Batman movie to a Lego Dimensions movie. Trust me, you’ll understand when you see it, and I think you’ll agree that the story gets a bit weaker at that point. In any case, I can’t wait for it to hit Blu Ray, so I can rewatch it a thousand times to catch all the Easter eggs.
This week, we got a trailer for a new season of Arrow. Wait, what? That was actually for Iron Fist? Huh. Yeah, I was really underwhelmed by that trailer. Finn Jones doesn’t seem like a great actor, there’s not a lot of Kung Fu on display, and it seems like it’s more focused on corporate takeover, as Danny Rand tries to reclaim his family’s business. Since it’s a Netflix Marvel show, there’s also Rosario Dawson and another damn hallway fight. I welcome the former, but I’m SO over the latter. I’ll get around to watching it, but the days of me binge-watching a Marvel season the weekend of its release are long gone. Considering I still need to watch Daredevil season 2 and Luke Cage, I’ll be lucky to get around to it in 2017. That said, I know a lot of y’all will binge it that day, and will tell me if it sucks or not.
In other TV news, it’s rumored that NBC wants to spin Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update segment into a weekly 30-minute show. I guess they looked at John Oliver and Samantha Bee, and realized they might be leaving money on the table. Still, Jost and Che as “polarizing”, at best, and I’m not sure if that segment has the legs to air 30 minutes every week, in the same format. Plus, would it also remain a part of SNL, or would it be excised completely? I think this would’ve been a good idea in an election year, as there’s just so much news to cover, but now that all that is behind us, I’m just not sure this is going to work. And then what happens? If it does leave SNL, would it come crawling back next season, with its tail between its legs? The difference between Last Week Tonight/Full Frontal and Weekend Update is that those cable shows are actually smart, with smart hosts. Plus, they can get away with a bit more because cable. Weekend Update has gotten a lot more biting since Trump was elected, but is it too little, too late? Are the SNL writers up to the task of this project? I just feel like it’s a bad idea that will dilute the Weekend Update and SNL brands.
It was also announced that Viacom will be rebranding Spike TV as the Paramount Network. In my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve witnessed a network go through as many format changes as that one. As far back as I can remember, it was The Nashville Network. Then, to appeal to a wider audience, it became The National Network. Then, to appeal to dudebros, it became Spike TV. Now, I don’t even know who they’re targeting. I also don’t know why they chose this particular name. It’s like they have short memories or something. After all, there’s already been a Paramount Network. Sure, most of us referred to it as UPN and not the United Paramount Network, but that’s what those letters stood for. And it was the definition of “failed experiment”. Sure, it hobbled along for about 10 years, but its legacy is basically Star Trek: Voyager, America’s Next Top Model and Girlfriends. Outside of that, it gave us such critical darlings as Shasta McNasty, Homeboys In Outer Space, and The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer. Hey, let’s see how many shitty (that means all of them) UPN shows I can list without looking them up: DiResta, Legend, Platypus Man, Hitz, Good News, Sparks, Dilbert, Marker, The Watcher, The Sentinel…yeah, that’s enough to make my point, which is you probably don’t remember any of these. UPN did NOTHING for the Paramount brand, and its effects are still being felt 11 years after its demise. So why, WHY would Viacom want to go down this road again? Anyway, the early plans for the rebranding call for the network to be a warehouse for hit Viacom programming from their other networks. It’s basically just gonna be the Now That’s What I Call Viacom Channel, posting the highlights from MTV, Nick, Nick Jr, etc. In fact, there are no concrete plans for the future of other Viacom networks, such as VH1, CMT, and TVLand, but reports say that there’s no immediate push to shut them down.
It was also rumored that there are already talks of an American Idol revival, but this time on NBC. Now, keep in mind the show just ended its run on Fox last year. The idea is that The Voice would be reduced to one cycle a year, and then they would slot Idol in one of its old slots. I feel like NBC sees the value in that show in that it actually creates household names – something The Voice has failed to do after 11 seasons. The focus is too much on the judges, and the winners have gone nowhere. Quick, name a winner of The Voice without looking it up. Hell, I watched the first season, and I can’t even remember that guy (I looked it up: Javier Colon. Who? Right). So, there’s definitely something to be gained from acquiring the franchise. That said, though, I also feel like a network only gets one of those shows. Fox had Idol, NBC had The Voice, ABC had Rising Star, and CBS had some show that got canceled that I forgot. Fox hurt Idol by double-dipping and picking up The X-Factor. That show never caught on in the US, and it hurt the Fox singing competition brand. If NBC picks up Idol, it’s going to do the same to The Voice. I mean, how much longer does America want to see Blake Shelton and Adam Levine bicker at each other? Sure, there’s a new dynamic now that Blake and Gwen Stefani are dating and both judges, but unless the show breaks them up, I don’t know how engaging that’s gonna be. And Miley Cyrus as a coach? Now, let me say that Bangerz was a great album. I’ve written about how awesome it was. But I don’t think Miley is established enough as a singer to be coaching anyone. She’s more known for her antics than her music. Then again, Paula Abdul was a has been, judging the talent of tomorrow, but that was intrinsic to the formula. Ultimately, America chose the Idol, and the show brought in established stars as coaches. The Voice has an unnecessary layer. They have talented judges, but then they also have the coaches, and then America. As Idol showed us, ANYBODY cane a judge, which is going to be an important thing for NBC to remember once it comes to for contracts to be renegotiated. Anyway, I think Idol needs to rest a few more years before they dust it off. It was once a powerhouse, but television AND music changed over time. Let the industry figure out its next steps before trying to reenter it.
I don’t know about you, but I grew up with women, which meant I did a tour of duty with soap operas. I started with Days of Our Lives back in the late 80s, then shifted to The Young and the Restless, and then shifted back to Days in the 00s. And besides Victor Newman, there is no soap villain quite as diabolical as Stefano DiMera. Well, the actor who portrayed him, Joseph Mascolo, died back in December, but his final filmed episode aired yesterday. Although Mascolo had been battling Alzheimers for the past few years, he had portrayed the character for around 30 years. For some reason (I haven’t watched in a while), he was in prison (he’s killed/led to the death of a lot of folks. But they typically come back after contract negotiations), and at the end of the episode, he escapes! What a beautiful ending, knowing that he will be forever “in the wind”, as they can’t really catch him again unless they recast him. Seeing as how the rumor is Days is coming to an end this year, they won’t even have time to do that, with scripts written about 6 months in advance. So, here’s a toast to one of the greatest villains to ever grace the television set. You will be missed, you evil son of a bitch.
Let’s get a little controversial, shall we? This week, comedian George Lopez got in hot water for kicking a woman out of one of his shows when she objected to a racially-charged joke he told. Basically he said, “There are only two rules in the Latino family: Don’t marry somebody black and don’t park in front of our house.” Apparently, a woman gave him the finger after that joke, to which he began to tell her to “sit [her] fucking ass down or get the fuck out.” Now, comedians are on his side because they say he was just shutting down a heckler. Meanwhile, the general public is on her side because they’re offended by the joke, and don’t see why he had to kick her out for objecting. Here’s my take: First of all, he’s told variations of this joke for years. He used to joke about how his grandmother wouldn’t even want President Obama in her house. If you’re familiar with his material, then his joke the other night shouldn’t surprise you. Now, for the folks offended by the joke: was he wrong? All I know is my own life experience. I dated a Cuban, and as polite and Ivy League-educated as I could be, I was still the Black guy who could only illicit grunts from her father. And I don’t know anyone named Esmeralda Jenkins or Manuela Johnson. Growing up where I did, Black guys didn’t get Latinas or Asian girls. Those girls’ families weren’t gonna stand for that! So, this is one of those jokes that’s grounded in truth. It might rub some folks the wrong way, but it’s not necessarily untrue. Where I stand, I don’t think he really did anything wrong. After all, that’s how comedians handle folks who they feel are interrupting their show, and the joke itself was par for the Lopez course. I wouldn’t say it was “haha funny”, but it wasn’t wrong.
Things You Might Have Missed This Week
An animated series based on the Castlevania video game is coming to Netflix later this year. Hopefully it will star gay Simon Belmont from Captain N: The Game Master.
Kate McKinnon will voice Ms. Frizzle in Netflix’s reboot of The Magic School Bus
Speaking of Netflix, Love, The OA, and Trollhunters have all been renewed by the streaming service.
Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, announced that she’s retiring after her next album is released.
After 25 years over covering the Olympics, Bob Costas announced he’s handing the reins over to Mike Tirico
Entertainment newsmagazine show The Insider has been canceled after 13 seasons.
Formerly of USA’s Satisfaction, Blair Redford has been cast as the first mutant in Fox’s X-Men TV series
Not to be outdone by Beyoncé, it was announced that George and Amal Clooney are expecting twins. Those Hollywood In Vitro clinics are working overtime these days!
Speaking of babies, Jason Statham proved he’s the Transporter of Sperm, as he announced he’s expecting a baby with girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
I don’t like Tom Brady. Don’t like a thing about him. I find it odd that you can be suspended for cheating AND win the Super Bowl in the same damn season. That said, that was a Hell of a comeback during Sunday’s Super Bowl LI. Somehow, the Atlanta Falcons blew a 25-point lead, allowing the New England Patriots to mount an amazing comeback and win their 5th Super Bowl title. It was the first Super Bowl to go into overtime. There was Edelman’s amazing catch. Some are calling it the most exciting game of football ever. But in the end there can only be one winner, and that was the Patriots. So, with that in mind, the New England Patriots had the West Week Ever.

A Prayer Against Depression Anxiety and Panic Attacks ( the spirit heaviness )
Father In Jesus Name Lord Thank You For Dying On The Cross For Me. Please Forgive Me of My Sins.
I Forgive Every One Who Has Hurt Me and Have Done Me Wrong.
Isaiah 61:1 States that "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
I Pray For The Spirit of The Lord God To Rise Up Inside of Me. Lord Please Bind Up My Broken Heart. Give Me Liberty and Set Me Free.
Isaiah 61:2 Says "To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;" God, Let This Be The Year of Your Revenge Against the enemy And Comfort Me and All Who Mourn.
Isaiah 61:3 "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified."
God Give Me Your Spirit of Beauty And Replace The Ashes Of My Broken Heart. Take Away The Mourning And Give Me Your Spirit Of The Oil Of Joy. Lord, Remove the spirit of heaviness And Give Me Your Spirit Of The Garment Of Praise. Make Me A Tree Of Righteousness That Is Planted By You So That You May Be Glorified.
Isaiah 61:4 Says "And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations."
God, Make Me A Brand New Person. Repair Me. Fix Me. Disolve And Break Every Generational Curse That Plagues Me And My Family.
In Jesus Name.
Isaiah 61:5 States "And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers."
Lord I Pray That You Make My Enemies Subject To Me. Confuse, Divide, And Destroy Them. Send Them All Far Beneath My Feet Permanently.
I Give You All Of The Honor, Praise And Glory Forever. Amen

Bong Joon Ho’s Path From Seoul to Oscar Dominance
SEOUL, South Korea — Eom Hang-ki’s pizza parlor in the run-down Noryangjin district of Seoul has attracted unusual customers in recent months: movie fans from Japan and even the United States and Argentina, all coming to pay homage at one of the locations where Bong Joon Ho shot “Parasite.”
“I am so happy that my shop played even a tiny role in the creation of the historic movie,” Ms. Eom, 65, said of the film that has become a worldwide sensation and this week became the first foreign language movie to win the best picture Oscar. “But frankly, I was confused at first when foreigners began showing up at my shop.”
The streets of Seoul are as much a character in “Parasite” as the actors themselves, and they played a formative role in shaping Mr. Bong’s politicized worldview and intense focus on the searing inequality in the pulsing city of 10 million people.
Mr. Bong’s relatives have told the South Korean news media that he showed a keen attention to wealth disparities from an early age, bringing poorer friends from school home to dine with him. When he was at Yonsei University in Seoul, students championed the rights of the poor and underprivileged, often going to rural villages as volunteer farmers and teachers during summer vacations or infiltrating work sites to help organize unions.
Mr. Bong moved to Seoul with his family from the provincial city of Daegu when he was a third grader. His maternal grandfather was Park Tae-won, a novelist who ended up in North Korea during the Korean War in the early 1950s and built a prolific literary career there until his death in 1986.
During the Cold War, studying Mr. Park and other “gone-to-the-North” writers was taboo in the South. People were banned from borrowing his book from libraries, and when parts of his works were cited in books and journals, his name was often partly redacted.
Growing up in Seoul, Mr. Bong as a middle school student was determined to become a film director. While studying sociology at Yonsei University in Seoul, he co-founded a filmmaking club.
He also developed what he called a “morbid obsession” with movies, watching old Hollywood classics broadcast every weekend on South Korean TV stations, as well as more sexually explicit and violent films shown on AFKN, a TV channel for American troops in South Korea. He bought his first video camera with savings from selling doughnuts at a school cafeteria.
“I still remember sleeping at night hugging the Hitachi camera,” he said.
When Mr. Bong enrolled at Yonsei in 1988, the campus was a hotbed of activism over the killing of a student the previous year, and there were protests nearly every day against the brutal military dictatorship. When demonstrators tried to march to the border with North Korea to call for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, the riot police moved in with tear gas.
Protests at Yonsei set off huge protests in downtown Seoul that eventually forced the military strongman, Chun Doo-hwan, to allow a direct presidential election.
Mr. Bong said he was not an activist himself, other than drawing cartoons for the campus newspaper that often championed the protesters’ cause.
But “it’s clear that his worldview shaped during his college days,” which “made him sensitive to social issues,” said Tcha Sung-jai, who was a producer for Mr. Bong’s first two movies and who now teaches filmmaking at Dongguk University in Seoul.
As South Korea began democratizing in the 1990s, phasing out state censorship of movies and books, a new generation of film directors and producers like Mr. Bong and Mr. Tcha — who had lived through the turmoil of the 1980s as students — spawned a renaissance in the South Korean movie industry at the beginning of the new millennium.
Some of these films were megahits, eclipsing Hollywood imports that had for so long dominated local theaters that the government forced them to dedicate some screening time to locally produced movies.
Mr. Bong struggled at the beginning. To make a living, he shot wedding videos. His first full-length movie, “Barking Dogs Never Bite” (2000), sold only 100,000 tickets.
“Did they really agree to make this film?” Mr. Bong later recalled his skeptical wife asking him after reading the script.
His second film, “Memories of Murder” (2003), based on a real-life serial murder case, gave Mr. Bong his first box office hit. Mr. Bong soon became a household name in South Korea, directing several other critically acclaimed blockbusters.
His movies dealt with issues like police incompetence, the danger of genetic engineering and the theme that would bring him worldwide renown: the class strife tearing at South Korean society. And he seasoned these weighty issues with black comedy.
The recipe proved hugely popular.
Mr. Bong wove suspenseful tales involving people whom South Koreans could easily recognize: cynical local cops and ordinary people swept up in impossible situations while the state offered little help. In “Memories of Murder,” a serial killer terrorizes a rural town while the local police are mobilized to Seoul to fight antigovernment demonstrators, as they were in real life in the 1980s and 90s.
“His movies deal with serious social issues but they entertain viewers through humor and unpredictable story lines,” said Kim Hyung-koo, who was the director of photography for two of Mr. Bong’s biggest hits.
But as movies about thinly veiled social and political issues became megahits, conservative politicians grew wary of “left wing” celebrity film directors like Mr. Bong, whom they accused of creating “political propaganda.”
The governments of two past conservative presidents, Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, secretly blacklisted thousands of artists, writers and film directors for their left-leaning ideologies. They denied them government subsidies and kept them and their work off television, and singled out Mr. Bong’s “Memories of Murder,” and his 2006 movie, “The Host.” They accused him of highlighting “government incompetence” and spreading “anti-American” and “left-wing messages.”
In “The Host,” a toxic chemical released from a United States military base in Seoul — an actual incident that occurred in Seoul in 2000 — creates a mutated monster that rises from Seoul’s Han River and massacres innocent citizens. An ordinary family fights the monster while the government provides little help. “The Host” sold 13 million tickets, breaking the record of South Korea’s top-grossing film at the time.
Even after “Parasite” won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, a first for a South Korean movie, many conservative politicians sneered at Mr. Bong, calling his latest film a “commie flick” not worth watching.
But the Oscars changed all that.
Conservative candidates in Daegu, Ms. Bong’s onetime hometown, have proposed building a museum and a statue and renaming streets in honor of Mr. Bong.
“‘Parasite’ has written new history,” said Park Yong-chan, a spokesman of the main conservative opposition Liberty Korea Party. “This is a monumental achievement that spread the power of South Korean movies and culture around the world.”

When it comes to culture wars, the past century was undoubtedly an American century. Coming victorious out of the ruins of World War II, with its economy experiencing momentous growth and influence and power, America was positioned as the global emblem of progress, liberty and modernity. This chimera was largely achieved through the might of American culture, with Hollywood films, television shows, and music that spread far and wide across the world.
Steve McQueen bested the Nazis in The Great Escape, whose film adaptation took notable liberties from the book – such as including Americans among the escapees of the German POW camp; Sylvester Stallone as Rambo single-handedly fought off and defeated a roster of American enemies, civilizing the weaklings of Vietnam, and taught the Soviets a good lesson by thrashing Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, the greatest grossing sports movie for nearly two decades.
Today, however, American soft power faces serious challenges from a slew of Asian countries, increasingly recognized as cultural hegemons themselves. America’s credibility in the world has taken a serious hit, limiting the persuasive effect of its films. Migration and urbanisation have had profound consequences too. In 2015, over one billion people left their homes in search of a better life. Only a small percentage, 244 million, migrated abroad. The majority, some 763 million, moved from rural to urban areas within their own countries. Crammed into urban areas with no support, the many millions coming late to the modern world have found themselves unmoored. The promise of globalisation has been exposed as a lie – not all boats were lifted with the rising tide, rather, the majority of the world is struggling not to drown while only the one percent floats comfortably. Those abandoned by capitalism and globalization have turned their loyalties away from Hollywood. The pop culture being produced out of India, Turkey and South Korea – to say nothing of China, which is a separate story altogether – exposes the twentieth century Western cultural tsunami as receding and revealing the seashore. Its tide has been broken.
South Korean Kpop music videos make up more than half of YouTube’s most watched videos of all time (with 80% of the views coming from outside the Asian peninsula nation) and one of Turkey’s most popular dizi, or television drama, Magnificent Century, has been watched by upwards of 500 million people globally. For comparison, the Guinness World Book of Records estimates that at its height, The Bold and The Beautiful had been seen by a peak of 26 million people around the world. Tuba Büyüküstün, one of Turkey’s most popular stars of Asi and Kara Para Ask – she was even awarded an acting prize by the Vatican in 2015 – says Turkey’s dizi production is important because “we have values but American TV or films doesn’t have anything to do with values or even cultural values.”
Bollywood produces more films than anyone in the world, grows at an astronomical 11.5% and sells more tickets at the box office than Hollywood could dream of. Its muscularity is not limited to the arts, either. After Pakistan and India – two nuclear armed powers – faced off in February 2019, it was Bollywood that beat the war drums for India. Star after star took to Twitter to cheer on their air forces and hashtag patriotic slogans alongside flag emojis. Priyanka Chopra, building a career stateside as a women’s empowerment role model, was unable to account for her online jingoism when recently questioned at Beautycon 2019. But the biggest promoters of pop cultural politics – and movie metaphors – might be the two leaders of the subcontinent.
Narendra Modi, India’s right-wing Prime Minister, campaigned for the May 2019 elections by promising his electorate that the standoff with Pakistan in February was just “the trailer” with the “full movie to come.” He is the subject of a fawning movie biopic – which its makers attempted to release before the Indian elections – and numerous, celebratory mini- series. On the Prime Minister’s birthday, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of classic Bollywood films such as Devdas, marked the occasion by announcing that he too would be making a Modi movie. Few but fans of the hardline government cheered the news.
Most recently, at the UN’s General Assembly in September, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan decried the Indian communications blackout and two-month long curfew of Kashmir, warning that its neighbor was building a case for yet another war with Pakistan over the disputed territory. “We’ve been brought up with films, Western films,” Prime Minister Khan orated. “This good decent guy doesn’t get justice, he decides to pick up a gun and start seeking justice. There was a film made in New York, famous film named Death Wish, this guy gets mugged and his wife gets killed or something and he can’t get justice. He picks up a gun and goes around shooting muggers and the whole cinema cheers him on.” The power of popular culture was very much on PM Khan’s mind and he concluded his trip to the UN by announcing that Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia would be banding together to start a television channel aimed at combating Islamophobia.
Though in his metaphor, it is unclear who is supposed to be Charles Bronson, pushed to the limits of human decency, his ultimate point is clear: politics is no longer fought through ballot boxes alone. The coming battlefield will be cultural, too.
