A student of Class 2-5 in Saebom High School; Han Seo-jun is a handsome and equally-popular student who, despite being tough-looking, is kind and loving under the surface, especially to his mother and sister. He is a former idol trainee at MOVE Entertainment and ex best friends with Su-ho — a tragic incident resulted in him abandoning his path to stardom and severing his friendship with Su-ho, with whom he has since become hostile to.

Seo-jun used to be an idol trainee alongside Yoon Se-yeon. Seo-jun specialized in vocals while Se-yeon specialized in dance. The two met in middle school and also came to know Su-ho. The three were best friends, nicknaming themselves the “Three S’s” — Su-ho supported Se-yeon and Seo-jun’s budding idol careers.

Se-yeon debuted before Seo-jun (he entered an idol competition show alone because Seo-jun had injured his arm at the time) and ended up in a band called N-6IX which rose in fame, their songs topping music charts. Unfortunately, hate also came along with the sudden burst of popularity. Se-yeon’s public image was scrutinized by haters after the show edited him in a bad light to gain a better viewership. There was also a rumor spread by Lee Joo-hun (Su-ho’s father), a famous actor and CEO of MOVE Entertainment that painted Se-yeon as a school bully just so he could cover up his own dating scandal with an actress. Se-yeon was then kicked out of the company. Although Seo-jun encouraged Se-yeon to ignore the negative comments that were spreading online, Se-yeon was unable to open up about his struggles.

One night, Se-yeon phoned Su-ho, who did not pick up; Se-yeon was found dead the next morning after committing suicide. Seo-jun, incapable of coping with his emotions after this tragedy, turned his anger towards Su-ho, believing he was at fault for the suicide because he didn’t pick up the phone. Their friendship collapsed and they fell out of contact. He quit being an idol trainee and hid his singing talent from others.

Seo-jun comes from a relatively poor family. His father died in a car crash, leaving him to care for his mother and younger sister, Go-woon. They faced financial struggle because of this, especially when his mother required a kidney transplant. Seo-jun works part-time as an amateur model to earn money for his family and lessen the burden on his mother. He has also borrowed money from “thugs” at his school before and this means they chase him down to get back what their owed, but Seo-jun isn’t afraid of them.

To help him through his own hardships, he has a “gang” of lovable and silly friends who he has a lot of fondness for. As time goes on and misunderstandings and miscommunications are cleared up with Su-ho (and once Lee Joo-hun stepped down as CEO), he returns to the idol trainee life and eventually debuts with an alternative rock band. He sings a song called “Missing You / Starlight” that Su-ho worked on with Se-yeon.

*- I don’t care for the whole beauty storyline with Ju-kyung because it’s shallow, damaging, boring, and not a message I condone, especially when there was no real pay-off.

A Day of Amity: The Friendly Baseball Game Between the Ruling and Opposition Parties

At the baseball stadium of Baejae High School on the 13th, the friendly baseball game between the ruling and opposition parties drew the curtains with the first pitch ceremony of Lee Gi-bung, the chairman of the National Assembly at 3:30 p.m.

Both ruling party members in light gray baseball uniforms and opposition members in white uniforms entered confidently, showing off their high-end baseball shoes with shiny metal cleats, but they looked nervous on the other hand. Perhaps because of this, the score was 0-0 until the second inning.

The crowd sitting in the high stands cheered whenever the pitcher from the opposition parties pitched strikes, and applauded whenever Kim Young-sam tried to steal bases. On the other hand, they were just cold to the players of the ruling party. Even they were booing the ruling party pitcher, so it seemed that the stands were totally the opposition parties turf(?) on this day.

In one corner of the stands, Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-gab and independent lawmaker Paik Nam-sik showed quite a bit of fairness by not applauding either side of the ruling or opposition parties. But Nam Song-hak of Liberal Party, sitting next to the two men, made an impressive contrast by sighing "Phew-" with a worried look on his face.

In the top of the fifth inning, the opposition parties suddenly began to struggle, and the ruling party team spurred their confidence with the consecutive at-bats. Four players of Liberal Party, Kim Jae-hwang, Choi Yong-geun, Yun Yong-gu and Park Man-won scored four points, outscoring the opposition team 5-1. The ruling party's morale was sky high……and the stands were quiet for a while.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the united team of the opposition parties started to make the desperate offensives, shouting "Lucky Seven." Rep Cho Young-gyu sent Rep Kim Hong-sik to the first base and entered the batter's box. Rep Cho's swing became a home run, which made all the crowd stand up at once. Amid the enthusiastic applause that was pouring into him, he took off his hat and waved it towards the stands like a triumphal general. Meanwhile, the agile young lawmaker Kim Young-sam showed off his own unique stealing technique again. Thus, the score became 5-4.

In this way, the opposition parties team was almost catching up with the ruling party team, but when the seventh inning was over, the ruling party claimed, "We promised to play only the seventh inning with the captain of the opposition parties team." Seo-jun used to be an idol trainee alongside Yoon Se-yeon. Seo-jun specialized in vocals while Se-yeon specialized in dance. The two met in middle school and also came to know Su-ho. The three were best friends, nicknaming themselves the "Three S's" — Su-ho supported Se-yeon and Seo-jun's budding idol careers.

Se-yeon debuted before Seo-jun (he entered an idol competition show alone because Seo-jun had injured his arm at the time) and ended up in a band called N-6IX which rose in fame, their songs topping music charts. Unfortunately, hate also came along with the sudden burst of popularity. Se-yeon's public image was scrutinized by haters after the show edited him in a bad light to gain a better viewership. There was also a rumor spread by Lee Joo-hun (Su-ho's father), a famous actor and CEO of MOVE Entertainment that painted Se-yeon as a school bully just so he could cover up his own dating scandal with an actress. Se-yeon was then kicked out of the company. Although Seo-jun encouraged Se-yeon to ignore the negative comments that were spreading online, Se-yeon was unable to open up about his struggles.

One night, Se-yeon phoned Su-ho, who did not pick up; Se-yeon was found dead the next morning after committing suicide. Seo-jun, incapable of coping with his emotions after this tragedy, turned his anger towards Su-ho, believing he was at fault for the suicide because he didn't pick up the phone. Their friendship collapsed and they fell out of contact. He quit being an idol trainee and hid his singing talent from others.

Seo-jun comes from a relatively poor family. His father died in a car crash, leaving him to care for his mother and younger sister, Go-woon. They faced financial struggle because of this, especially when his mother required a kidney transplant. Seo-jun works part-time as an amateur model to earn money for his family and lessen the burden on his mother. He has also borrowed money from "thugs" at his school before and this means they chase him down to get back what their owed, but Seo-jun isn't afraid of them.

To help him through his own hardships, he has a "gang" of lovable and silly friends who he has a lot of fondness for. As time goes on and misunderstandings and miscommunications are cleared up with Su-ho (and once Lee Joo-hun stepped down as CEO), he returns to the idol trainee life and eventually debuts with an alternative rock band. He sings a song called "Missing You / Starlight" that Su-ho worked on with Se-yeon.

*- please note that I don't ship Seo-jun and Ju-kyung. It's just another case of kdrama (and webtoons) using the love triangle trope while already knowing that the female lead and male lead will get together in the end. It's just another excuse to treat the second male lead like trash and throw him into unnecessary drama. I also don't think they fit together in that way, so my Seo-jun (while he had a minor crush on her for a brief time - mainly just to piss Su-ho off) doesn't have any romantic feelings for Ju-kyung.

*- I also don't care for the whole beauty storyline with Ju-kyung because it's shallow, damaging, boring, and not a message I condone, especially when there was no real pay-off.

I’m a bit surprised that I’m enjoying True Beauty so much. It’s genuinely funny at parts.

I’m not thrilled with the “big, thick glasses + acne + bushy eyebrows = ugly” route they went and that they seemed to have leaned into (those random strangers calling Ju gyeong ugly in the second episode). Personally, I’m sticking with my personal head cannon: Ju Gyeong was never ugly, but she was a bit of an outsider who was bullied and now has internalized that she’s “ugly”.

I also don’t like that they have a second girl, with big, thick glasses, bushy eye brows and acne who’s considered “ugly” (or at least she’s being bullied her her looks). Though Go Woon seems to be there as a contrast to Ju Gyeong. While they have similar experiences, Go Woon is more comfortable in her bare skin than Ju Gyeong.

This drama is going to have to walk a careful balance with unrealistic beauty standards and expectations. There’s nothing wrong with wearing makeup but it’s also fine to just be bare faced. I just want Ju Gyeong to be happy and comfortable with who she is.

I’m definitely on team Su Ho. I don’t really like how Su Ho has pushed Ju Gyeong away but it looks like that might be resolved soon. He’s definitely dealing with some severe trauma and guilt surrounding his friend’s death. He’s basically had two panic attacks (when he heard the song and when he heard the ringing phone) and it all ties into Se Yeon’s suicide.  It doesn’t help that he lost his other best friend who now calls him a murderer.

After initially disliking him, I’ve warmed up to Seo Jun. I live for Seo Jun and Ju Gyeong’s bickering. I don’t know what happened yet between Seo Jun, Su Ho and Ju Gyeong but I’m hoping they make up.

A few last thoughts:

I dislike Ju Gyeong’s mom intensely.

I love Soo Jin and despise her father. Her poor hands.

HISTORY:

ELEKTRO is the second act to debut under Tastemaker Inc. and the company's first success. They are known as the overnight sensation of second generation groups, earning their first win after only four days of promotion. Their fanbase grew so quickly not only due to their superhuman dancing abilities, incredible live vocals, and stunning visuals, but because of their variety show appearances. They were able to show their unique, down-to-Earth personalities to the public and were praised for being "real people". They even won the Newbie Award at the 23rd Annual Golden Disk Awards.

In 2009, ELEKTRO released their first full-length album Calm Before The Storm with the title track “나에게 돌아와 (Come Back To Me)”. It became a viral smash hit very much in the way "Gee" had become one only eight months prior. The song was covered by countless singers and groups, parodied on almost every comedy and variety show, and for a while it seemed to topple "Gee" as South Korea's new anthem. That year, ELEKTRO won Album of the Year at the 11th Annual Mnet Asian Music Awards for Calm Before The Storm.

In mid-2010, Young1 and Z.HO both enlisted in the military. It's rumored that the other members were scheduled to take some much needed personal time off, but because of the disaster and eventual disbandment of IN2U the company had to ask members to come back. Whether this is true or not, it led Laser and Yohan to form RAIDEN, a subunit of ELEKTRO. RAIDEN in itself became pretty popular in its own right and helped establish Yohan as a talented vocalist.

Two years later, Young1 and Z.HO were discharged from the military and ELEKTRO immediately started preparing for their comeback as a group. That following year, ELEKTRO finally made their long-awaited comeback with their third mini album 40 Days/40 Nights and the title track “Sunday To Sunday”. Fans welcomed them back with open arms and the lead single achieved a perfect all-kill across the charts. In their promotional period, they earned a record-breaking ten wins. Their next release, Strike!, beat that record with eleven wins. Now that ELEKTRO had finally arrived, they decided they had earned some well-deserved vacation time after promotions for the repackage of Strike! ended.

ELEKTRO made their comeback in 2016 with their second full-length album, No More Rain, after being on hiatus for almost two years. Two weeks into promotions, leader Young1 was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Fans were devastated by the news of Young1's passing, but then were angered by the rumors that Tastemaker Inc. allegedly strong-armed the members into continuing promotions. CEO Na tried to explain that "the remaining members of ELEKTRO expressed a desire to continue promotions in Young1's memory," but no one bought that. Ten days after Young1's passing, the company finally released a statement announcing ELEKTRO's indefinite hiatus.

In 2017, Laser appeared as a main judge on THE FUN FACTORY. It was the first appearance of an ELEKTRO member since the announced hiatus. Since then, the other members of ELEKTRO as well as Laser have focused on their individual activities; fulfilling their military service, starting YouTube channels, pursuing acting, etc.

January 17th, 2021 marked the five year anniversary of Young1's untimely passing, and surprisingly ELEKTRO came together and released a "memorial" single. It was actually the first time they had all sung together in five years. Later in July, the group came together again to celebrate the group's 14-year anniversary with a Vlive where they sang some of their hits and answered questions. Laser, the de facto leader of the group, did clarify that although they had done these activities together, ELEKTRO was still on hiatus. He did clarify, however, that they were not disbanded and may have a comeback in the future.
