For Transgender Day of Remembrance, here’s 10 graphic novels with transgender protagonists, are about gender, or are autobiographies from transgender creators.
Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier & Val Wise
Annie is a smart, antisocial lesbian starting her senior year of high school who’s under pressure to join the cheerleader squad to make friends and round out her college applications. Her former friend BeeBee is a people-pleaser—a trans girl who must keep her parents happy with her grades and social life to keep their support of her transition. Through the rigors of squad training and amped up social pressures (not to mention micro aggressions and other queer youth problems), the two girls rekindle a friendship they thought they’d lost and discover there may be other, sweeter feelings springing up between them.
Blackwater by Jeannette Arroyo & Ren Graham
Tony Price is a popular high school track star and occasional delinquent aching for his dad’s attention and approval. Eli Hirsch is a quiet boy with a chronic autoimmune disorder that has ravaged his health and social life. What happens when these two become unlikely friends (and a whole lot more . . .) in the spooky town of Blackwater, Maine? Werewolf curses, unsavory interactions with the quarterback of the football team, a ghostly fisherman haunting the harbor, and tons of high school drama.
The Bride Was a Boy by Chii
The heartwarming transgender love story, based on true events! Drawn in the style of diary comics with an upbeat, adorable flair, this is a charming tale about Chii, a woman assigned male at birth. Her story starts with her childhood and follows the ups and downs of exploring her sexuality, gender, and transition--as well as falling in love with a man who’s head over heels for her. Now they want to get married, so Chii’s about to embark on a new adventure: becoming a bride!
Love Me for Who I Am by Kata Konayama
Non-Binary Maid Reporting for Duty! Mogumo is a cute but lonely non-binary high school student who just wants a few loving friends. As someone who doesn’t identify as a boy or a girl, however, finding people who really understand can be a big challenge. When fellow student Iwaoka Tetsu invites Mogumo to work at an untraditional maid café, Mogumo is hopeful that things are looking up. Will they finally find friends to call their own―or just more misunderstanding?
Super Late Bloomer: My Early Days in Transition by Julia Kaye
A highly personal collection documenting the early months of artist Julia Kaye’s gender transition. Instead of a traditional written diary, Julia Kaye has always turned to art as a means of self-reflection. So when she began her gender transition in 2016, she decided to use her popular webcomic, Up and Out, to process her journey and help others with similar struggles realize they weren’t alone. Julia’s poignant, relatable comics honestly depict her personal ups and downs while dealing with the various issues involved in transitioning—from struggling with self-acceptance and challenging societal expectations, to moments of self-love and joy. Super Late Bloomer both educates and inspires, as Julia faces her difficulties head-on and commits to being wholly, authentically who she was always meant to be
Magical Boy by The Kao
A breathtakingly imaginative fantasy series starring Max—a high schooler chosen to become the next "Magical Girl." There's just one catch . . . he's a trans boy! Although he was assigned female at birth, Max is your average trans man trying to get through high school as himself. With a sassy feline sidekick and loyal gang of friends by his side, can Max take on his destiny, save the world, and become the next Magical Boy? A hilarious and heartfelt riff on the magical girl genre made popular by teen manga series, Magical Boy is a one-of-a-kind fantasy series that comic readers of all ages will love.
Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure by Lewis Hancox
A groundbreaking memoir about being a trans teen, in the vein of FUN HOME and FLAMER... and at the same time entirely its own. Lewis has a few things to say to his younger teen self. He knows she hates her body. He knows she's confused about who to snog. He knows she's really a he and will ultimately realize this... but she's going to go through a whole lot of mess (some of it funny, some of it not funny at all) to get to that point. Lewis is trying to tell her this... but she's refusing to listen.

Girl Haven by Lilah Sturges & Meaghan Carter Three years ago, Ash's mom, Kristin, left home and never came back. Now, Ash lives in the house where Kristin grew up. All of her things are there. Her old room, her old clothes, and the shed, where she spent her childhood creating a fantasy world called Koretris. Ash knows all about Koretris: how it's a haven for girls, with no men or boys allowed, and filled with fanciful landscapes and creatures. When Ash's friends decide to try going to Koretris, using one of Kristin's spellbooks, Ash doesn't think anything will happen. But the spell works, and Ash discovers that the world Kristin created is actually a real place, with real inhabitants and very real danger. But if Koretris is real, why is Ash there? Everyone has always called Ash a boy. Ash uses he/him pronouns. Shouldn't the spell have kept Ash out? And what does it mean if it let Ash in?

Part 1 - Negotiations
Lady Arden
The gates to the courtyard opened and the delegation from the Citadel were welcomed into the keep of my uncle's castle. I watched their arrival from the window of my chambers, as my presence wouldn't be needed until later, after the three men who rode in were formally welcomed by my uncle and legal guardian, Ser Anthony of House Stark. Ever since my parents died of the wasting disease when I was still a child, he had overseen my preparation for life as the lady of a great lord. Unlike some of the fathers and guardians of other young women of my ilk, he had been rather progressive towards my education. Where others had been taught to walk and speak with grace, while learning the arts of needlework, music and art, my uncle had made sure I could do all of those, plus ride a horse, handle a sword, learn foreign languages, read and write more than just my name, and above all else, to carry myself as one who was as capable as any man. It was certainly not the usual life of a young woman.
My uncle had his reasons for my unusual upbringing; some of which he shared with me. Where other young women of my stature were being married off to whomever was politically in favour, in addition to receiving a generous dowry, my uncle was more interested in a particular man to become my husband. Lord James Barnes of the Citadel was his goal; a consummate warrior, well educated, able to speak several languages due to his travels, and the most powerful lord of our region. He had already been sought as husband for any number of simpering brides that didn't interest him. Rumours circulated by the unsuccessful families seeking to install their daughters as his lady said that he was a lover of men, or was damaged in body and spirit by his travels in dangerous lands, but my uncle had heard through unofficial sources that he preferred an accomplished woman to become his consort, as he saw value in intelligence above all else. By promoting my unconventional education, my uncle was certain that word of me would eventually reach the ears of those at the Citadel whose task it was to find a suitable mate for the great lord. That day had finally come.
That's not to say there weren't bumps in the road to this occasion. There are always men who want what they see as different or even exotic. Before I turned 14 my uncle was being offered great wealth for the promise of an engagement with any number of eligible sons. Several great houses in our land, Walker, Rumlow, Pierce, even Dreykov in the Russian region far to the east across the sea, had amped up the pressure for my uncle to accept one of their own as my future husband, but he wouldn't even entertain the offers that came over the years. It was some time before he shared that his goal was to align his house with the Citadel, and nothing less would interest him.
As I approached my 21st birthday, an age considered old for marriage, rumours began of my own shortcomings as a prospective bride. It was said I was vain, unattractive, too heavy, too thin, too unhealthy, defective in mind and spirit, even that I was barren due to the wasting disease that had killed my parents but had spared me. Knowing I was none of those, I always held my head high. At public occasions I was visible, open, and friendly with those around me. I acted as I had been taught; that I had a place in society, and it would be one of influence no matter if I were the wife of a great lord or not.
Thus, the arrival of the three men from the Citadel on that cool autumn afternoon was proof that my uncle had properly read the situation. It was clear that I was of interest to the most powerful lord, seen as an important counsellor for the next king himself. As the three men dismounted, they stood in their travelling cloaks, heads still covered, removing their gloves and, in the way of men of action, taking note of their surroundings. I could see that they assessed the guard complement in the keep, while searching the walls of the castle itself to see if their arrival had been noted. That is when one of them pulled his hood back, revealing a bearded man of dark-hair and eyes of blue like the ocean. He made eye contact with me from his place in the courtyard. A hint of a smile crossed his face then I stepped away from the window when he turned to his companions. His looks matched the description of Lord Barnes, but it was unusual for the head of a great house to personally attend the negotiations for a marriage. Until I was summoned for dinner, I wouldn't find out who he actually was.
My aunt, a strong and confident woman in her own right, sought entry to my chambers shortly after the arrival of the three men. She entered with a complement of maidservants, intent on preparing and dressing me in a way that emphasized my best features. With my tall build and red hair, that I was born with, the colour of which had only deepened over the years of my existence, there wasn't much else to be done to make me more visible. I had drawn attention from many sources my whole life. Even my name, Arden, was different as it meant "little and fiery." Although I was no longer little, I was often referred to as the Flame of the Forest, for I usually took my daily ride there with my hair unencumbered by coverings.
After much fussing over the various dresses, they chose a blue one, trimmed with lace and a brocade border. Its full sleeves ended at a wide brocade cuff. My hair, left long, was brushed until it gleamed, then a portion was twisted and fastened at the back of my head. My colouring was usually high, so no additional applications of powder, charcoal or berries were needed to accentuate my features. By all the accounts of my uncle's inquiries, Lord Barnes was known to prefer a natural appearance. Regardless, as my aunt regarded my appearance she smiled in approval.
"If they don't acknowledge your physical appearance, they are blind," she said, with authority. "You are a vision, Arden."
"Did you see their arrival?" I asked. "There were three and one fit Lord Barnes' description."
"Yes, but I was not presented to them when they entered so I cannot confirm that gentleman was him," she answered. "I will be presented to them in the great hall then you will be sent for."
"May I wait in the library?"
It was my favourite place in the castle. When my uncle first discovered me in there after taking me into his care, he could have sent me away but apparently, I offered him a book and asked that he read it to me. Seeing the title, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, my uncle took it as a sign of my innate intelligence and determined then that I would be educated in the same manner as any young man of high standing. In that sanctuary, I spent many hours reading of far-off lands, great heroes, and tragic loves.
With my aunt's approval, I relocated to the library and pulled out the copy of The Canterbury Tales, one of less than a hundred in existence according to the Bishop, as they were hand lettered and illuminated by monks who spent weeks or even months creating them. The time and effort it took to create a book meant the possession of more than a handful was a sign of great wealth. Our library had hundreds. This book was a favourite of mine and I sat down at a table in the late afternoon sun. I had only been there a brief time when I heard the door open. Assuming it was my aunt, I closed the book and stood up to return it to its proper place. Instead, it was the dark-haired man who entered, dressed in richly brocaded clothing. At his discovery of my presence, he bowed his head briefly.
"I beg your pardon, my Lady." He spoke in a voice that was deep and rich. "Ser Anthony did not say anyone would be in here."
I curtsied to acknowledge him. "He was unaware of my presence here," I answered. "I sought some comfort from Chaucer."
He approached and extended his hand to receive the book, looking fondly at the title.
"Which one is your favourite?" he asked.
"The Wife of Bath's Tale, of course," I smiled then spoke freely. "I have been raised to believe that I am equal to any man but not all men believe the same. It is my hope to be blessed with a husband who freely gives me my sovereignty."
He smiled warmly. "It is one that I enjoy reading as well, although I am not meek, or submissive. I take it that you are the Lady Arden. I am James Barnes, Lord of the Citadel. I am at your service, my Lady. It was you in the window overlooking the courtyard, was it not?"
"It was, sir," I replied. "I was curious about you accompanying your courtiers for the negotiations. That is why you are here, is it not?"
He seemed amused. "You are correct that my travelling companions will undertake the negotiations on my behalf. I accompanied them to meet the Flame of the Forest herself. Word of your beauty has travelled far and contrary to the rumours which swirl around us both, I am pleased to find that the positive reports are quite true." He opened the book and glanced inside. "Your education appears to be superior to other women of your status if you find comfort in a library. Your skills on a horse and with a sword are also based on truth, according to my sources."
I could have been elevated by his declarations, but I wasn't, not completely. Even though it was proof of my uncle's contention that I would be of interest to this handsome and powerful man, there was still a part of me that remained wary. At that moment, the door opened, and a servant announced to Lord Barnes that Ser Anthony wished to present his wife and niece. He then announced that I was to present myself in the Great Hall. Looking at the shelf, Barnes immediately spotted the place where the book belonged and returned it to its spot. Then he bowed graciously to me and left. With a breath to calm myself I exited the space and stood at the top of the stairs for a moment before descending.
Lord Barnes was already at the bottom of the large staircase, with his travelling companions, a man with dark blond hair and a darker beard, and a man of Moorish descent, both dressed as he was, in fine clothing as befit their stations. Although I didn't know who the blond man was, the other was well known as one befriended by Barnes on his journeys in the Spanish peninsula. Taking the Christian name of Samuel Wilson, he had become famous throughout our kingdom for his chivalry. All three men watched me closely as I descended alone down the great stone staircase, no doubt to assess the grace of my movements. As the wife of a powerful lord, I would constantly be looked upon as a symbol of his house. My comportment would be seen as either a benefit to his stature or a hindrance to it. When I reached the bottom, my uncle smiled and extended his hand to me.
"May I present my niece, Lady Arden Worth," he said simply. "Lady Arden, may I introduce you to Lord James Barnes, of the Citadel, his Highness, Steven Rogers, the Duke of Long Isle, and their trusted friend, Ser Samuel Wilson."
The blond man was Steven Rogers, the Duke, grandson of the king and third in line for the throne. No wonder Barnes seemed amused when I described him as a courtier. That alone required a deeper curtsy than what I gave Lord Barnes in the library.
"My Lady," said Barnes, taking my hand to raise me from my lowered position. "The Duke is here as my closest friend and has agreed to act as a negotiator for the marriage arrangement. May I escort you to the dining hall?"
To refuse would have been considered rude so I placed my hand on his forearm and allowed him to lead me to the dining hall. The Duke escorted my aunt, which was puzzling, since he should have led us all, considering he was of the higher echelon of nobility. My uncle and Ser Samuel brought up the rear of the party. Footmen pulled our chairs out, then assisted in pushing them closer to the table as we settled. I noticed the arrangement of cutlery in our places, a knife and fork, specifically. Although I had been exposed to using them it was still surprising as most of the nobility thought that forks were an affectation of the Italians; a sign of hubris that they were too proud to dirty their fingers as they ate. In our nation most of the nobility dispensed with any utensils, other than using a knife to spear a portion of fowl, or roast, then bite into it with their teeth and allow the juices to run over their faces and onto their clothing. It was obvious by how our guests used their utensils to cut the meat into smaller bites, that they were well used to eating in the new fashion.
"You were successful in finding my library, Lord Barnes?" asked my uncle.
"I was Ser Anthony," he replied. "A fine library at that. You must spend many pleasant hours there."
"When I have the time. Lady Arden is there often. She has likely read everything in there at least once, even the texts in French or Latin."
"Is that true?" he asked me in French. "You are fluent in those two languages?"
I answered him in French. "Yes, in Spanish and Italian, also. My uncle invested a lot of money in language tutors."
He said nothing about our meeting in the library, but he looked at my uncle with a degree of surprise and approval. Apparently, four additional languages were more than he was expecting. The look exchanged between Lord Barnes, the Duke, and Ser Samuel was subtle but telling. I had the feeling that even with the reports they had commissioned about my attributes I was still something of a mystery.
After dinner, my uncle disappeared into the library with the Duke and Ser Samuel with the intent of beginning the negotiations. My aunt went up to help settle my cousins for bed. That left me and Lord Barnes alone.
"Is there a garden where we can walk before it gets dark?"
"There is."
I led him out to the formal gardens, walking along the gravelled path between the displays of hyacinths and mums which were still blooming. The trees, which were casting off their green colour, were displaying some yellow, red, and orange hues. As the sun approached the horizon, the golden light it projected lent a soft glow to everything. We stopped at a pond briefly, then the wind came up and I shivered. Although it had warmed slightly since Lord Barnes arrival, I wore only a shawl over my dress, not enough to stay warm as it darkened.
"We should return to the castle," he said. "I wouldn't want you to catch a chill on my account."
"As you wish, my Lord," I answered, mindful of his superior status. "There is a small conservatory in the castle, with a fireplace where we can keep warm and still enjoy the plants around us."
He agreed to go there and by the time we arrived a fire had been lit, and a tray with a decanter of wine and two metal goblets were on a table. As I sat, he poured out some for each of us, then joined me on a padded bench built into the wall near the fireplace.
"To your good health," he said, before sipping his drink
"And to yours," I replied, sipping my own. "You know this is unusual. Allowing us to be alone."
"I requested it. Too many of my peers have arranged their marriages through intermediaries without meeting until the wedding day. Both parties experienced disappointment more often than not. I vowed never to make that mistake." He gazed steadily at me. "If there is anything you wish to ask me, I am open to your inquiries."
"Where have you travelled?" It was something I was genuinely interested in, having never left the country myself.
"I have been as far east as Greece, to the northern shore of Africa, Italy, Spain, France and Brittania. There have been journeys north of our kingdom, but it is still mostly wilderness and those who have lived there for eons are not the friendliest, with reason considering how our ancestors first treated them. The Northmen still have settlements there and have a truce with the original inhabitants. We do have trading relationships with the Northmen, as you know. Most of my travels was accompanying the Duke as his Majesty desired to know those who have the closest relationships with our country. We met Ser Samuel in the portion of Spain that had recently thrown off Moorish control. He agreed to stay with us as we found each other's company engaging. Since his Arabic name of Saqr Sama Allayl or Falcon of the Night Sky, was often mispronounced by those who were unfamiliar saying it, he asked for a Christian name to go by while he travelled our lands. The name Samuel in Arabic means prophet and seer. Wilson was suggested as a common last name. It has made his travels here easier. When he returns ... if he returns, he will revert to his given name."
There was a lot of information in his answer, but he obviously found value in knowing about the people in other realms. Placing his goblet down, he picked up the poker and adjusted the wood in the fireplace, as if he were used to taking care of such things himself. He sat next to me again.
"Have you travelled?"
"Alas, no, although I have read many accounts of different journeys, such as those of Marco Polo, The Travels of John Mandeville, and others. I have great admiration for the women who journeyed with Eleanor of Aquitaine to the Holy Lands. I wish someone had thought to document their journey."
"As my wife I would request that you accompany me on my travels," he mentioned. "It would be your choice but the alternative would be spending a significant amount of time apart, which is not conducive to marital harmony."
"What about children? Travelling with an infant would be an issue, wouldn't it?"
"Depends on the destination."
We were quiet again, with only the crackle of the fire to listen to. When the moon's glow appeared through the window, Lord Barnes stood up and turned to me.
"I believe I will retire now. May I request the honour of riding with you tomorrow?"
I stood up. "Of course. I usually ride in the morning an hour after breakfast. If that is acceptable to you."
"It is."
He bowed to me and left, leaving me puzzled to his sudden and arbitrary departure. My aunt arrived shortly after, and we returned to my chambers where she questioned me on what Lord Barnes and I spoke about.
Lord Barnes
As I walked to my chambers, I reflected on the time spent with Lady Arden. Her beauty was unmatched by any other woman I had ever seen. How Ser Anthony had managed to keep her isolated enough to avoid a kidnapping and forced marriage I will never know but it was imperative that we formalize our marriage as soon as possible. Since I first glimpsed her in the window, then spoke with her in the library, I had been unable to think rationally of anything or anyone else. Steven and Samuel were already in my chambers on my arrival, having ceased the negotiations at moonrise, which prompted my departure from the conservatory. They both turned to me as I entered and bolted the door, then checked the hidden passageway for listening servants. Steven handed me a goblet of wine.
"Well?" I looked at both expectantly. Steven answered.
"She is the only survivor of the House of Forrest. Ser Anthony confirmed it. She was brought to him by the housekeeper of the House Forrest, after they were attacked by the forces of House Pierce. Of course, they were not wearing the insignia, but she recognized several faces as Pierce's men. Lady Forrest pressed her daughter into the care of that woman, and they escaped via a secret passage that let them out a mile away. Even in the passageway she could hear as Pierce's men slaughtered the entire family. You know he would have taken her to keep for one of his sons, or his nephews and cement his acquisition of their lands."
"It was he who said he made a social call the following day and found the family dead of the wasting disease. Then he burned their castle to purify it and took their lands for himself, although he calls it a stewardship until the missing heir is found." I was angry at such villainy. "She doesn't know the truth, does she?"
"No, upon the housekeeper's arrival, Stark swore her to secrecy and claimed the child was his orphaned niece. She believes she is the daughter of his sister, Lady Worth and Ser Louis of House Worth from a sudden bout of the wasting disease. His position as godfather to Lady Arden guided him in her upbringing. It was her father's wish she be given every opportunity to be as educated as well as possible. He is aware of the betrothal document which is why he indicated his preference for your favour. That was late in being made known as he was under the impression for some time that you were aligned with House Pierce."
I looked at Samuel for his opinion. "That is understandable. You feel his vow of fealty to House Barnes is now honestly offered?"
"I do. Ser Anthony is a rare individual. He is a man of truth and honour, and both he and Lady Stark love the young woman as much as one of their own. His dowry request is for her benefit, not his, so that she is independently wealthy in the event of your death. Otherwise, he only requests an alliance with the Citadel. It may be that he fears reprisals if Pierce realizes the true identity of Lady Arden so would require the strength of your garrison to protect him and his family."
"Accept his terms. We'll read the banns as soon as possible, then I will apply for a marriage license so that the normal time period can be waived. As soon as it is approved, I will send for her to come to the Citadel for the marriage ceremony. With luck, we can be married after a fortnight. If there are any objections, then I can produce the original betrothal contract between our parents."
Steven placed a hand on my arm. "It will come to pass, Buck. I have faith."
"I hope you're right," I replied, draining my goblet. "Now that I have seen her, I cannot think of ever marrying another woman. By the way, we're going riding tomorrow, so we'll have to stay another night since you'll be engaged in negotiations during the day."
"Alone?" Steven and Samuel smirked at each other. "Is that wise?"
"We were alone this evening when we walked in the garden and when we sat in the conservatory, drinking wine. I'm a changed man. No more brothels or courtesans for me. A woman of her quality deserves a husband who will remain steadfast and faithful. It is my intention to be that type of husband for her."
"If you say so," remarked Steven, draining his wine. "Come Samuel, let's leave Lord Barnes to have sweet dreams of the Lady Arden."
I gave him a rude gesture then locked the door behind them. As I disrobed, I felt encouraged by their report. When our spy in Pierce's castle brought us proof of his part in the death of Lady Arden's parents, I knew the day was coming for the man's part in many similar incidents. He amassed his wealth and power by undermining the rule of law we were all supposed to live under. Even if it wasn't his men who performed all his suspected crimes, his alliances with the Walker and Rumlow houses meant he had them as his accomplices and co-conspirators. With his end game believed to be an attempt on the throne, we needed to be careful not to tip our hand too soon.
The following morning, we took breakfast with the Stark family, and I met the younger children, three daughters. The oldest was dark, like her father, while the other two resembled their mother with their fairer features. They were very well behaved, and I observed Lady Arden's interaction with them, curious about her suitability as a mother. They seemed fond of each other, and it was obvious that they were also being raised in the same manner as Lady Arden had been, for they spoke extensively of stories they wrote for each other's pleasure. They spoke French and Italian easily, making each other laugh. Their commentary was enjoyable, even bringing grins to Steven and Samuel's faces. The oldest child, Morgan, dared to ask Samuel about his childhood in Spain, then listened with rapt attention as he told her about his first time hunting with a falcon under his control.
When the meal was finished, Ser Anthony and my two friends repaired to the library to continue the marriage negotiations. Lady Arden excused herself to prepare for her daily horseback ride, agreeing to meet me in the courtyard of the keep. With the order given to prepare both of our horses I returned to my chambers to change into something more suitable for riding. I went out to check my horse, and found the care given to Soldier since our arrival the day before was exemplary. His coat gleamed in the warm sunlight. As always, he greeted me with affection, brushing his head against mine, then searching for the apple I usually gave him. The stable master offered me one and I broke it in two, feeding the pieces to him separately.
"He is a fine stallion," said Lady Arden's voice, behind me. "It is rare to find a fully black horse without a white patch somewhere on his body. Have you bred him yet?"
"Aye, he has sired a dozen foals in the past two years," I answered, before turning to look at her. For a moment, no words came out of my mouth as I took in what she was wearing. "This is your usual riding attire?"
She grinned and looked down at the short knee length skirt, and knee-high leather boots she wore. On her upper body she wore a tunic under a jacket that was styled in the same manner as a man's. It was scandalous but it also allowed her to have greater control over her horse. Her hair was loose and flowing down her back, brilliant in its colour that reminded me of a sunset or a smouldering flame.
"Do you disapprove?" she asked, almost daring me to forbid her from leaving the keep.
"No, it suits you," I answered, truthfully. I gestured to her horse, a beautiful grey mare. "Do you require assistance to get on?"
"A hand up, please," she answered.
Lacing my hands together, I boosted her up after she put her boot into them. She easily mounted the rest of the way, and I realized the many folds of her skirt hid the fact they were cut like trousers. It gave her as much control over her horse as a man would have. I mounted my horse and signalled to her to lead the way. With a nod to the stable master, we left the keep and began with an easy canter towards a wooded area. She slowed up once we were well out of eyesight. Looking back at me, she waited for me to ride beside her.
"You go out on your own?" I asked. "Are you not afraid of being accosted?"
"I can defend myself," she answered, then reached into her boot and pulled out a long knife, flipping it over in her hand before reinserting it. "Minerva is fast and can outrun almost any horse in the area."
I wondered if she would be so unconcerned with her personal safety if she knew who she really was, but it wouldn't be my place to tell her until we were married, so I kept my observation to myself. As we rode, I took time to scan our surroundings. It was evident why she chose this area. There were many trees already covered in the finery of autumn. The reds, golds, and oranges were everywhere. Whenever a breeze came up, we were showered with the leaves pulled from the branches. It was peaceful and, in her company, I found myself relaxing just enough to forget the affairs of state.
At one point, she glanced at me then nudged her horse into a gallop. I watched with admiration as her hair flew behind her, proving the moniker Flame of the Forest. She was beautiful and magnificent, and if I had my way, she would be my wife in just over a fortnight. Perhaps, just perhaps, she would be safe from those who wanted her for their own purposes.
Note about The Wife of Bath’s Tale. It recounts the story of a knight who is accused of rape. He is given a year to find out what it is women most desire, in order to spare his life. An old crone says she will tell him if he agrees to her request. He agrees and she tells him that women desire sovereignty over their own lives more than anything. When he offers the answer to the courts he is spared and he returns to the old crone to fulfill her request. She demands that he marries her. Since he is a knight and is bound by his oath he agrees. In bed on their wedding night she asks if he would like an old ugly wife who is faithful or a beautiful one who is faithless. He leaves the decision to her, declaring himself bound to it. For his honesty and concession to her she becomes beautiful and faithful, and they live happily as husband and wife.

Alicent’s three sons really amp up the courting of their Aunt after the Greens win the war. It’s three years later, and Lady Hightower remains unmarried. She journeys to Red Keep to be closer to her elder sister… but walks into a mess.
Aegon thinks he can have two wives, like his namesake. He is tactless in romance, however, and fumbles at communicating his feelings while sober. With a cup or two of Arbor Red, Aegon is far more touchy. Demanding she sit next to him at all meals, tourneys, feasts, anything. He speaks to her about his loveless marriage, the loss of his only son— emphasizing how Helaena refuses to let him touch her again. Laying down the loose framework of a seduction.
Aemond thinks he’s earned himself a pretty bride for his loyalty. He is far more straightforward after a few million kills under his belt. Aemond will mention how he is still without a bride… and his beautiful Aunt is somehow still a maiden. He lavishes her in compliments and gifts he knows that she will like. When she asks him why he is being so generous, he just kisses her hand and smirks.
Daeron thinks he has the best relationship with Lady Hightower. Now, he just needs to show her that he is a Man. He fights harder during his training. When he sees her, he will take off his shirt and grin at her. Daeron starts to resist her touch if she tries to coddle him. With how inexperienced he is with sex and romance, he starts to seduce ladies in court for practice. Once, at a feast, Lady Hightower went to the Godswood for some air only to find Daeron with his hand between a lady of the court's thighs. She was moaning against his shoulder.
Oh Aegon is just a beast and is hardly subtly after a drink or two, but his pretty wife only gives him such sympathetic strokes of his hair and listens to his grievances. "I am sure your wife will return to you," she whispers her promises whilst the King only burrows into her neck. Gods, she smelled so good.
Aemond's love language is gift giving and her chambers are full of such things. All the nicest of silks and jewels from the many corners of the world. She is a blushing mess with each gift as well as the most rare books the Prince could find.
She thinks Daeron has out grown her and does not want to be around his old aunt. Oh, how wrong she is. A part of her could not deny the jealousy coming over her body as she watched the woman move in pleasure. A soft gasp escaped her when Daeron's eyes locked with her

Minette watches Medici, part 11 (Obstacles And Opportunities)
- Look, I don’t mind episodes of this show having basic ass titles, but this one is... Just far bellow basic, if you know what I mean.
- A small, but still embarassing correction - there’s no Lucrezia M in this show so far, that was the other sister of Lorenzo the Magnificent, that was married off very young, which is presumably why she’s not in the show. Fahriye-sultan-but-lame is named Bianca.
- My suspicions about Lorenzo being the bestest, smartest, specialest little boy in the writers’ eyes were unfortunately not disproven in the slightest. For Lorenzo, nothing is a problem, he never makes big mistakes and has no major flaws. Like, his Gary Stu status becomes obvious trough comparison to Cosimo, who was allowed to make much bigger mistakes and lose much more badly, making for a more compelling character. And while there were hints of the Medici maintaining the moral high ground over their opponents, this season amps this up to a truly ridiculous degree. I mean, “making Florence a true republic” is an interesting way of putting “becoming a populist autocrat akin to Julius Caesar”.
- That said, I don’t hate the love triangle so far. Clarice and Lorenzo still have nothing in common and don’t even really know each other, but Lucrezia D’s “I feel protective of her” gives me hope for a decent polycule, in my delusional headcanons if not in practice. The instant consummation of their marriage made me rise my eyebrows, especially after Lorenzo passed the opportunity to be a gentleman (yes, in a somewhat anachronistic way, but still less absurd than the Bianca subplot - see bellow). Then again, he IS riddiculously attractive, enough to drive even a repressed renessaince virgin who probably barely knows what sex is mad with lust, so I’ll allow it. Still, the chemistry between Lorenzo and his new bride is still very much not there.
- Speaking of shitty romantic subplots! It really doesn’t help my enjoyment of the show that hurrempilled ever so graciously reminded me of the existence of Bali/Armin “romance”. Tsundere girl x presumptuous fuckboy is truly the worst romance trope in existence, which may be why Giuliano went in this episode from mildly to severely annoying. Poor Simonetta also has two other options, apparently - an equally presumptuous simp and her older, but reasonably attractive and only a little bit douchey (not nearly comparable to Giuliano, I’ll tell you that) husband. My money is on the husband.
- The Bianca subplot finally got interesting, but only at the price of becoming a thousand times stupider. Okay, them realizing there’s no way their families will reconcile anytime soon and eloping was stupid in an understandable way. Their reactions, though... First off, even if Lorenzo was eventually able to forgive Bianca and didn’t force her to join the monastery ASAP, he would be much more pissed off than that. There is no goddamn reason for old Pazzi to be angrier at his nephew than Lorenzo at Bianca - and don’t give me that “Gugliermo’s honor was threatened too”, because IT WASN’T. Of course it would be much worse and more embarassing for Bianca and her family! She’s a woman! Promised to another man and still supposed to be a virgin! Lorenzo should be negotiating with old Pazzi with tail between his legs, but I guess we couldn’t do that to our precious golden boy, so the show doesn’t make it entirely clear just how big of a leverage old Pazzi has over his family.
- Well, at least he’s forced to make some real concessions, like give up his leverage over old Pazzi, which is to say blocking Salviati from Pisa. But that’s still kinda dumb, because it’s not made clear how can Lorenzo boss the Pisans around, to the point they would close the gates to their own archbishop for him. Like, the real Lorenzo could presumably count on having, like, some high-ranking magistrates there being in debt to his bank, but the show doesn’t bother explaining it. The fact that politics in Rome are simplified to the point of farce is also a bit stupid, like, it’s almost as if there were sum total of three cardinals including Salviati in the entire city of Rome, plus one priest of unspecified rank i.e. uncle Carlo.
- I sincerely hope Lorenzo giving up all gains from the deal with Milan to Bianca’s spurned groom will have some major consequences down the line for the Medici bank, or so help me God... Like, at this point they extended Galeazzo’s loan and got fuck all out of it in the long run, this should be a major hit for the bank!
- And don’t think I’ve forgotten about the subtle foreshadowing that Galeazzo is untrustworthy, because that was truly an eyeroll worthy of Shadow And Bone season 2. Again, I hope this will come back later when Lorenzo will consider turning on Galeazzo somehow, but I am not getting my hopes up on the show being that smart. I mean, Giuliano knowing about Bianca and Gugliermo’s whole deal also didn’t go anywhere. Like, c’mon, people, have some imagination! Magnificent Century would milk the shit out this stuff!
- The crowning moment of stupid in this episode was Francesco de’ Pazzi turning on his uncle, because... He turned on Gugliermo for the whole marriage to Bianca?! Which, fine, Francesco siding with his brother over his uncle is whatever, but to side with the MEDICI for this?! I call incredible bullshit on that.
- This was just straight up not a great episode. It had its moments, but overall the amount of stupid stuff on display in this one lets down the entire show.

Daily Devotional for December 28, 2022
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living Devotional Scripture: Proverbs 31:23-24 (KJV): 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sitteth among the elders of the land. 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
Proverbs 31:23-24 (AMP): 23 Her husband is known in the (city's) gates when he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes fine linen garments and leads others to buy them; she delivers to the merchant's girdles (or sashes that free one up for service).   Thought for the Day
Verse 23 - We may recall that in Biblical times, cities were enclosed by high walls with huge gates, where the elders met who presided over the affairs of the city. To be "known in the gates" meant that a man was a person of influence in the community. There is truth to the adage: "Behind every successful man is a successful woman." A man and woman become one flesh when they marry (Ephesians 5:31-33). A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband. Her conduct and accomplishments bless and prosper him, and bring him honor. She will be an asset to him in every way. What we are and what we do influences others, especially those closest to us. How sad for a woman to disgrace her husband and family. "A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones" (Proverbs 12:4). We also should always remember that we are Christ's bride and strive to always bring Him glory.
Verse 24 - The virtuous woman was so industrious and her work of such high quality, that she had enough garments both to clothe her entire household and others to sell. She presented her products as a wholesaler to merchants who in turn sold them in the marketplaces. This was another way in which she gained money for her family. In yesterday's study, we saw that linen garments represent the righteousness that comes with salvation. Selling fine, white linen is a picture of sharing one's faith with others.
In addition to fine linen, the virtuous woman sold girdles or sashes. The girdle was an important piece of clothing used in two primary ways: First, it enabled one to move freely when necessary. In ancient times, all people wore long robes. A girdle was worn to hitch the garments above the feet so that one could walk about freely when the task called for it. Certain activities might require the robes to be hitched higher than the ankles, in which case the sash was wrapped around the waist very tightly, and the garments pulled through the knees and tucked up into the girdle. This is where the expression "girding up one's loins" came from. The girdle was associated with strength. Wrapping it around the loins supported the back much as back supports do today. Second, the girdle provided a pouch for holding money and other items. Men also carried their swords or knives in their sashes.
Ephesians 6:13-17 tells us to put on the whole armor of God to stand against Satan's schemes. Part of that preparation is to "gird up our loins" with the truth. When we embrace and walk in the Bible's truths, we will also walk in victory over the devil.
Prayer for the Day Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for my loved ones, and may I always bring honor to them and You, by living my life in a godly manner. Lord, may I do the things in the natural to care for my family friends and future loved ones, and more importantly, may I attend to the spiritual things that will cause all of my family to know the plan of salvation and the Word of God? May I be mindful to put on the armor of God, so that I will be protected from the attacks of the devil so that I will remain steadfast in the cause of Christ? I ask this in the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen. From: Steven P. Miller CEO/ Founder of Gatekeeper-Watchman International Groups Jacksonville, Florida., Duval County, USA. Daily Devotionals for December 31, 2023
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 31:30-31 (KJV): 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:30-31 (AMP): 30 Charm and grace are deceptive, and beauty is vain (because it is not lasting), but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord, she shall be praised! 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates (of the city)!
Thought for the Day
Verses 30-31 - Bathsheba's instruction concludes that the fear of the Lord is our greatest asset, for it leads us to obey His commands and serve Him faithfully. We all reap the fruit of what we sow, and only what we accomplish for Christ through the Holy Spirit will merit God's praise. Everything else is vanity. It will perish and be forgotten.
Physical beauty is temporary, but the spiritual beauty of a good character will endure into eternity. When we are young and our whole lives lie ahead of us, we may not consider that we will grow old and die one day. What kind of legacy will we leave behind us? Will it be one like the virtuous woman whose works were praised by all who knew her? When we are older, we may not have the opportunities to serve God that we have today. Let us live each day by the wisdom found in Proverbs so that we will not regret how our days on the earth were spent. This is the sum of Solomon's wisdom: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
While these verses present a model for all women, it is also a spiritual type of the "Bride of Christ" and her relationship with her heavenly Bridegroom, the Lord Jesus Christ. Re-reading it with this in mind, we shall receive a wonderful revelation of what we can accomplish for the Lord when we are committed to Him.
Prayer Devotional for the Day Dear heavenly Father, thank you for including the book of Proverbs in the Bible. Lord, may we take heed of the wisdom in this book and apply it to our lives. Teach us the truth, and give us knowledge and revelation of Your Word, so that we might live an overcoming life on this earth. Guide us so that we might daily walk in the Spirit and do the things that You have called us to do in our lifetime. May the contributions we make to this world be those that are inspired by You, and come from Your heart. Let Your will be done in my life now, and always. We ask this in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. From: Steven P. I never liked the forced marriage part of the mcd story because a: gross but also b: I could never figure out how to explain my thoughts on what happened after because Fenrir going from “prince who can’t do anything because he’s also being forced into this” to “guy who blames the woman who was almost forced to be his bride for the death of the people at his wedding even though it was 100% her companion and she SAVED HIM FROM HIM but of course gotta make another antagonist” enraged me
Literally just let Laurence admit that what he did was not the right thing but he thought it was his only option. Have fenrir admit that yes, he blames aphmau and laurence for the deaths but understands that Aphmau was at no actual fault and that Laurence was only trying to protect himself and his friends.
Instead, from what I remember: Fenrir wanted aphmau mauled before she was brought to him and if it would make her suffer worse, he’d make her marry him. He went from victim to even worse than his dad. Like why?? That was such a good opportunity to show that actions that can be even somewhat justified are still going to leave harm. Laurence was trying to protect the people he loved and himself. Yes, there was a genuine threat of death, and yes, Laurence was one of the people at risk, but those werewolves still had families and Fenrir had to watch the death of his father and a massacre.
i could talk about this storyline forever and that is exactly what i am going to do. i was genuinely obsessed with it i drew a million scene redraws and came up with a detailed idea of what i think would’ve happened before diaries was cancelled.
i personally really liked the storyline in season 2,, it’s insanely fucked up but it’s so enticing as it felt like a genuinely terrifying and stressful situation because,, there’s like,, no way to get out of it without shit hitting the fan. aphmau is locked in a bedroom until the wedding,, laurence is stuck in a jail cell,, only being let out to be humiliated by the king and to see the wedding and katelyn. katelyn literally has no idea what’s going on and was probably kept in a cell far away from laurence so he couldn’t fill her in on anything. the wedding scene altered my brain chemistry in so many ways,, it’s ingrained in my mind. literally iconic. i think it’s because it’s the first sign that laurence is beginning to go down a dark path. it’s the first time he transforms into his shadows knight form and his possessiveness towards aphmau amps up from this episode onwards.
about his actions specifically i don’t really blame him for what he did because what else was he supposed to do?? if he simply transformed,, grabbed aphmau and bolted then they would’ve had guards chasing after them and with the king still alive they would’ve most definitely been hunted - assuming they would’ve even escaped. obviously him massacring half of the wedding attendees was awful but him shoving the king off the cliff was kind of understandable. the guy deserved it.
NOW FENRIR,, he’s complicated. looking solely at what we’re shown his want for vengeance against APHMAU OF ALL people is baffling. it makes no sense how he solely wants to kill her. it completely ignores how the two of them bonded over their horrible situation and the fact he disliked his father. i understand that no matter what you’re parent has done seeing them die,, especially in such a gruesome way,, is devastating and i think fenrir wanting revenge makes sense. but like you said it would’ve made most sense for him to be partially angry at aphmau for “betraying” him (in his mind) but mostly at laurence as he was the one who slaughtered his people and his father. my personal interpretation of fenrir’s actions in season 3 is the cycle continuing. his desire to have aphmau mauled and to invade the phoenix capital makes him arguably worse than his father. he’s continuing the obsession and lack of rationality that his dad had. he even wants to still go through with the wedding. i think his misconstruing of the facts to fit his motives and feelings about what happened further prove this. he’s spiralling,, literally dedicating the past three years of his life to hunt down aphmau. you’re supposed to see how messed up this is and how far from truth his point of view is. obviously it’s unlikely jess intended this but i like my interpretation better.
i also wonder how his mother fits into this. she too was horrified and upset at her husband’s death but in the moment,, she still chose to help laurence,, aphmau and katelyn escape. i feel like maybe she would’ve been able to stop fenrir in season 3 if laurence apologising to him didn’t work. would’ve liked to see how she felt about how much her son had become like her husband and maybe that could’ve been what brought him to his senses. once he realised that he had become like the man he despised the most he would’ve given up on his rampage for revenge.
i’ll probably make a post about my scenario about what i think would’ve happened in season 3 but i’d rather not add it here because this is already a monster of a post lol

Prompt 5/25/21: ‘Meadow’
From: Reylomicrofic Hub (@reylomicrofics)

This is a brief continuation to my #GingerRoseWeek2021 piece “A Proposal”

“Queen Rose, Prince Armitage.” Solo nodded politely at them as they approached. “Good of you to come.”
Rose clung to her husband’s arm, giving the hulking man a brilliant smile.
“Of course! You were gracious enough to attended our wedding. I wouldn’t dream of missing yours with Miss Rey. Oh!”
She spotted the other young woman across the meadow.
The grounds of the Organa estate had been transformed into a whimsical reception venue, dotted with long tables bursting with sweet delights and overflowing with baskets of flowers.
Rose hurried off towards the new bride, leaving the two men standing alone together.
Hux cleared his throat. Solo wasn’t his favorite for conversation, but he knew how to feign politeness.
“It was a beautiful service,” he said.
Ben grunted.
“The large event was my mother’s idea. I rather liked your ceremony on Hays. Small, quiet. Intimate.”
Hux couldn’t help a soft sigh at the memory. Their nighttime nuptials had been draped in glistening crystal and candlelight. He and Rose had been joined under a heavy bough of snow grapes with a shared cup of blessed ice wine.
Hux glanced over at the two women who were speaking, laughing; embracing like sisters. A content warmth curled inside him.
“The galaxy works in mysterious ways,” he remarked with a warm chuckle, hand resting idly on his ceremonial sword belt.
Who could have imagined an exiled prince, flung far from his homeland, would fall for a future Queen? That she would want him with equal passion?
“We certainly are lucky, Solo.”
The other man cracked a grin.
“Yes, we are.”

“Victor, straighten your tie.” Mrs. Van Dort’s voice jerked Victor from his thoughts as she reached forward and grabbed him by the shirt collar before he had a chance to react, tightening the offending piece of material so tightly around his neck that he nearly choked before his mother was happy with his appearance. She brushed imaginary lint off his shoulder and turned to go harangue his poor father about his own attire. As soon as she closed the door behind her he loosened the tie and inhaled deeply before sinking into a chair. He hadn’t felt this tired in a long time; anxiety and worry pressing down on him all night, demanding his focus and keeping him awake when he wanted nothing more than to sleep it off.
He would be getting married tomorrow. He knew nothing more about the woman who was to be his bride except for a name. Victoria. Victoria Everglot. He wished that was all he needed to be happy with his parent’s decision but it wasn’t. Did she like music? Did she like to read? Did she like to take walks and stop to take in the flora and fauna? They were simple questions, he knew, and he knew that if he asked his mother and father they would laugh and tell him it didn’t matter… but it did. He knew deep down that his parents meant well even if their reasoning seemed a bit selfish at first glance. He knew that this marriage would benefit them all but what if he didn’t… couldn’t love her? The thought nagged at him well into the wee hours of the morning; his sheets twisting around his ankles like something malevolently alive.
Of course he’d thought of numerous bullet points he could make in favor of his own argument. One, he was thirty years old; an adult. Surely it fell to him to choose his own partner. Two, love was important to him. It always had been. He deserved to at least meet her before they said their vows. Three– Well, it didn’t matter. He had always been much braver in his head. Those thoughts, as wild as they had been, would never leave his mouth. His mother, though she meant well, would never allow him to speak to her in defiance and his dad, though less controlling, would always agree with his wife. There was no escape. Victor sighed heavily and stood, leaning over his desk to open the window. A rush of sea air came in through the window, reviving him a bit as he pulled back. His hand rested on a small jar in which a small blue butterfly rested. He had caught it yesterday on one of his walks but it didn’t seem fair to keep it. He knew what it was liked to be trapped. At least one of them could get away. He unscrewed the lid and held the jar out the window, gently shaking it until the little bug fell loose and flew away. It was beautiful and he was alone. He watched it long after it vanished, wishing he could go with it as he fiddled with the cuffs of his suit. He wanted, more than anything, to belief that his parents would never steer him wrong… but something didn’t feel right and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was irrevocably wrong. Still, it wouldn’t do to be full of doom and gloom on the day before his… his wedding. He adjusted his cuffs and tie one last time before heading downstairs, a soft smile on his dark features. He would be fine…. Wouldn’t he?
___ He really should have been paying attention to his surroundings but he was easily sucked into his own thoughts and his own imagination. He was thinking about the blue butterfly when they pulled to a stop in front of the Everglot estate. It was dark; austere, and looking at it made his stomach do uncomfortable somersaults but he got out and ran a hand through his wild hair regardless of how he felt because that was what he was expected to do. His parents joined him and his mom reached up, pinching at his cheeks before he had a moment to process what exactly was happening. “Ow!” He gently took her hands and pried them off his face, only letting go when she relaxed in his grasp.
“Oh, Victor, you’re so pale! I’m just trying to get some color back in your face!” He wanted to ask her how it was possible that he could be pale but he bit back the sarcasm. Now wasn’t the time. He gently pinched at his own face until she smiled and nodded her approval at him before heading up the steps to the heavy front door of the mansion. He couldn’t help but roll his eyes as soon as her back was turned. This was ridiculous and he wished he was brave enough to say so. He just followed them inside. Unfortunately, the inside was just as gloomy as the inside, the large entry way echoing with the sounds of their footsteps as they were let inside.
They were met by the equally austere Mr. and Mrs. Everglot. Although seeing them brought Victor up short behind his parents; his parents didn’t seem to have the sense to be intimidated by them in the slightest. They just began to talk their legs off and follow them into the room beyond. Victor didn’t follow. Instead, he stood there and looked around, willing his heart to slow down. This day, while… admittedly not ideal, was special and he wanted; hoped, that he could feel good enough to enjoy it.
Once he calmed down he moved to follow them but was instantly distracted by the grand piano sitting by the stairs.
Victor had always been fond of music but his parents had frowned upon it because it didn’t help them with their fish business and he couldn’t make a living off it either. Still, he’d learned and it was a passion that he held dear to his heart; squirreling it away to comfort him when he was having a bad day. He knew he shouldn’t mess with it but he couldn’t help it, sliding onto the bench and placing his long fingers against the smooth keys.
It felt like home. He began to play and suddenly it didn’t matter. His parents, the wedding, the whole situation melted away as he played…. That is until he felt a hand rest against his. He panicked, flailing hard enough to knock a vase of flowers over on top of the piano before he had even had a chance to register who it was. Once he saw who it was, time seemed to stop.
His heart was in his throat but this time it was for a good reason. Victoria Everglot was the most beautiful person Victor had ever seen. She was tall and slender, pale with the faintest hint of pink along the apples of her cheeks like a porcelain doll. Her lips were roses he tried to keep alive in the little garden by his bedroom window. He could talk about how beautiful she was for days without ever stopping. He couldn’t deny that he would be thinking of her gentle smile for days to come and found, surprisingly, that he felt….. happy.
Of course that feeling was fleeting. They barely had time to exchange pleasantries before their parents descending on them in a flurry of anger. They were not supposed to be alone together; a chaperon a must if they wanted to spend time together. The impropriety! What would someone say if they happened to see them like that? The audacity! Victor didn’t have a chance to say anything and neither did Victoria before they were spirited away to the living area to recite the vows they’d be saying for real the following day.
It all went downhill from there.
He couldn’t remember his vows. He was shaking so hard he dropped the candle and lit the priest’s robes on fire. Mrs. Everglot was upset. His mother even more so. He wanted to apologize to Victoria but all he could do was look at her face and realize that there was nothing he could do to be worthy of her. He ran for the door and kept running until he crossed the bridge that led into town and ended up in the woods. He stopped when he couldn’t breathe, shivering in the snow as he gasped for air. He had lit a priest on fire. His incompetence astounded even himself sometime. He pulled the ring from his pocket and looked at it, inhaling deeply before he began attempting to recite his vows again. “With this hand I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.”
With a flair, he slid the wring onto a gnarled tree branch sticking out of the snow. He couldn’t help but smile in spite of himself. Maybe this was a good sign. Maybe he would be worthy of Victoria after all one day….
He suddenly realized how still the forest was. The trees were still and no animals rustled around in the underbrush. He found himself straining to find signs of anything alive around him. He had backed up and nearly had a heart attack when something strong closed around his wrist. He looked around wildly before gasping and trying to pull away from the tree branch he’d slipped the ring on. He’d calmed down slightly when the terror was amped up to a whole new level. It wasn’t a branch at all. It was the arm and hand of a skeleton covered in dirty, tattered lace. He shrieked and yanked backwards, falling into a snowdrift with a pained, strangled sound. The hand and arm that it was attached to came with him. He tried his best to shake it off but soon realized that what ever this was, it was the least of his worried because something was starting to claw its way out from under the dirt in front of him.
Cold and filled with terror, Victor watched as the once pretty face of a girl hauled herself out of the ground; her skin a sickly blue. She was clothed in the remains of a wedding gown, the veil blowing behind her in the wind. She smiled and it did nothing to ease the horror he felt in his thundering heart as she extended her hand towards him, the ring glimmering in the light from the moon that drifted through the canopy of leaves above their heads. She spoke and he found her voice as cold and sharp as the evening air, penetrating the silence with two words. “I do!”
There were a lot of things that Victor could do in that moment. He could run, go back to his parents and apologize profusely. He could show up tomorrow and act like none of this had ever happened; pretend that it was all a dream and that everything would be okay when he woke up…. He didn’t do any of that though. Instead, with all the fear built up inside his wretched self, his eyes rolled back into their sockets and he passed out in the dirty snow.
