Friday, December 20: Van Halen, "Honeybabysweetiedoll"
R.I.P. Edward Van Halen (1955-2020)
A few years after his passing, the general perception of Eddie Van Halen continues to evolve away from the seemingly effortless virtuoso with a boyish smile to a more complicated and frequently troubled genius.  And when that is taken into consideration, certain aspects of Van Halen’s music begin to take on different dimensions.  For instance, while so much of the band’s music radiated effervescent joy there were moments where Ed went out of his way to bulldoze just to prove how heavy he could be, even though nobody ever doubted or even remotely questioned his capacity to tear the roof off.  This strange fixation lasted to the very end, and if ever there was any point when one might’ve felt sympathy for David Lee Roth it was on “Honeybabysweetiedoll”: the track was first written in 2000 when the original lineup tried (and failed) to get back together, and 12 years later Diamond Dave still couldn’t figure out exactly where he fit in the maelstrom.  Eddie’s guitars absolutely smothered the track, and while it was nice to hear Alex roaring with a percussive fury he hadn’t delivered in decades he was also fighting to be heard alongside his brother.  All of that said, the Van Halen family had a telepathic way of locking into each other, and with Wolfgang snapping his father into focus the magic was still there.  In that respect, Dave was almost an afterthought, but he sounded engaged and committed both here and throughout A Different Kind of Truth, seeming to recognize that he was generally considered the weak link and therefore stepping up to at least justify his place in the band.  The smothering ferocity of “Honeybabysweetiedoll” obscured some of Van Halen’s natural talents, but at the same time ripped with such force that, if nothing else, it illustrated that Eddie and Alex had lost none of their power some 35 years after their debut.

RE-REVIEW: Van Halen - A Different Kind of Truth (2012 CD/DVD set)
VAN HALEN – A Different Kind of Truth (2012 Universal CD/DVD set) When this album was released in 2012, we all wanted Van Halen to win.  Eddie had been through some tough times, but he finally did what the fans demanded:  get back together with David Lee Roth, and record a new album.  Sure, we all lamented that Michael Anthony was gone, but it was new bassist Wolfgang Van Halen that made it…

Friday, June 9: Van Halen, "China Town"
R.I.P Edward Van Halen (1955-2020)
David Lee Roth opened “China Town” with one of the most infamous newspaper headlines in history, using it as a springboard to spin his own adventurous yarn about the dangers of the big city.  But of course, Dave was still Dave, so when it came to actually singing those words he sounded much more bemused and excited than cautious or scared.  And with Eddie Van Halen opening the track with bumblebee tapping, the track made good on the promise of Diamond Dave rejoining Van Halen as it brought back all of the bombast, flash, dexterity and reckless fun of Roth’s original run with the band.  And as one of the few newly-written tracks for A Different Kind of Truth (although that remains unclear: Wolfgang Van Halen claimed about half the songs were fresh for the album, but later on Roth insisted nothing was more recent than 1984), “China Town” showed that Eddie and Alex in particular had lost none of their verve- in fact, they hadn’t sounded like they were having this much fun since arguably 1986.  And even if nobody could pretend Dave sounded great, he clearly put in the effort and sounded engaged.  This was the sort of track that had everything we originally loved about Van Halen, maybe a few years older and just a tiny bit wiser, but the magic was still there.

WOLFGANG VAN HALEN On DAVID LEE ROTH: 'I Thought We Were On Good Terms' Until Recently
In a recent episode of the “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast, Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen‘s son who joined VAN HALEN at the age of 15, was asked about his relationship with the band’s singer, David Lee Roth. “Not really, at least as of recently,” he responded (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “I thought we were on good terms, and he actually made a couple YouTube videos about me, about how…

Break out the Jack Daniels (Bass): Michael Anthony Turns 70
Though he’s not named Van Halen or Roth or Hagar, Michael Anthony’s got to be pleased he’s not a Cherone.
The bassist may be the least- or second-least-famous member of Van Halen; however, he’s not the most infamous, as Gary Cherone is.
Born June 20, 1954, Anthony turns 70 today and more than 30 of those years were spent in rhythm-section partnership with drummer Alex Van Halen. Anthony survived David Lee Roth’s departure, Sammy Hagar’s arrival, Hagar’s departure, Roth’s re-return and departure, Cherone’s arrival and departure and Hagar’s second arrival until he was unceremoniously dumped for Wolfgang Van Halen when Roth re-re-returned.
A soap opera to be sure, which probably explains both the Jack Daniels bass and the Jack Daniels itself.
But now Anthony’s touring with Hagar. So, tequila it is.
