Winston and Evelyn weren't rich like alot might think growing up. they were a regular middle class family until their freshman year in high school their father decided to Make "the big jump" into entepanuership. and with that jump came alot of sacrifices.

They had hand me down, or thrifted clothes, they sold a car, and downsized their home and had to live like that all the wya up until graduation.

so when they did have money after success they weren't spoiled or used to access to alot of things. hence why their not snobbish or greedy. their normal.

Dark theory for Incredibles 2 (my apologies if this discussion makes anyone uncomfortable)

A long time ago, some fans and I talked about the question of what Evelyn would have done if she had escaped at the end of the movie.  She could have gone into hiding, but ultimately, she would have been a known, wanted criminal if Helen, Bob, Lucius, or the Wannabees survived to testify against her (which she knew was likely since she left after all of their goggles had been removed), regardless of whether the ship crashed into Municiberg or not.  

Fast forward to after Helen shoots Evelyn out of the plane and then tries to save her: the fact that Evelyn kicks out at Helen and makes the choice to freefall into the ocean led me to the conclusion that she was, in fact, suicidal, but I figured that that was more of an in-the-moment kind of decision because she was so angry and realized that she had nowhere to run.

But I just realized something: the movie makes a point that Helen turns on the autopilot when she goes to save Evelyn.

Theoretically, that should have made the plane maintain course until it neared its final destination, specifically so that it wouldn't crash without anyone at the helm.  But, in fact, it does crash into the ocean, and it does so almost immediately after Helen leaves the plane.

So .... was that Evelyn's intention all along?  Was that the final destination that the auto-pilot locked onto?

I don't think that was her intention when she first boarded the plane with Winston.  She cares about her brother too much for that. But what if everything that happened, ending with Winston's desertion of her (from her perspective), made her decide that that was how the situation was going to end?

It’s so dark, and so sad, but the more that I think about it, the more that I’m convinced that this was what was in Evelyn’s mind during the scene with Helen on the plane.  Her words take on a disturbing double meaning if you assume that she’s set course for the ocean and is planning to kill them both.  

It’s almost like she’s talking to herself when Helen says, “I don’t wanna die,” and she answers, “Eh, nobody does. Really, not such a bad way to go.”

Excuse me while I *shudder* ...

Even in the end, Evelyn’s far more concerned with the fact that she’s been bested and humiliated then with the fact that she nearly died.  Helen’s the one that has to remind her of that. 

“The fact that you saved me doesn’t make you right.” “But it does make you alive.”

Thanks to Helen, Evelyn’s still alive.  Winston didn’t have to face her death, even though it seems fairly certain that that’s what she was intending.

i have an Incredibles 2 headcanon

it has to do with this guy

so i doubt that im the only one that thought about this, but when i was watching the movie, one of my first thoughts about him was ‘deavor is kind of an odd surname’

but then i thought about about it

Winston Deavor.

Say it faster and it sounds like “winst endeavor”

Again and its “wins endeavor”

Winston Deavor = Wins Endeavor.

which to me actually makes a lot of sense bc essentially that’s what he does! his character wins his endeavor, he achieves his goal which was to bring supers out from hiding and into the limelight and legalize them again.

Now, apply that deductive thinking to his sister

Evelyn Deavor.

Faster and it’s “evel endeavor”

Pronounce that first part different and what do you get? That’s right, EVIL.

Evelyn Deavor = Evil Endeavor.

Again, this is what she does basically! She pursues an evil endeavor and becomes Screenslaver, the film’s antagonist, in order to prevent supers from ever becoming legalized again

Tony Deavor Headcanon

Wait. What if Tony was Evelyn and Winston’s baby brother?

Anthony (Tony) was really young when both the Deavor parents died, somewhere around infancy and toddler years. People were ok with Winston and Evelyn taking over the company, after all Winston was technically eighteen and Evelyn was old enough to be pretty self sufficient.

Tony wasn’t, and after mass pestering Winston and Evelyn had to give in and give Tony up for adoption once they realized they wouldn’t be fit to raise their little brother. Winston was busy maintaining DevTech and Evelyn was working through school.

Evelyn proceeded to add the loss of her little brother onto the growing list of reasons she hated supers. Their lawyers made it a closed adoption, said it would protect Tony from publicity and other things that could stunt his growth. Such as people only adopting him for a chance at some of the Deavor fortune.

Winston and Evelyn were allowed to seek him out but Tony’s adopted parents weren’t allowed to know his family. Which was ok with the Rydinger’s, as far as they are concerned Tony is their’s and so help the fools who try to claim otherwise.

Evelyn keeps track of Tony throughout the years and shares some things with Winston. She’s almost obsessive about knowing everything about him. Hobbies, sports, academics, and friends.

Fast forward to after Incredibles 2; Winston comes over for dinner at the Pate’s and sees Tony and Violet. Violet introduces Tony as her boyfriend and Winston just about loses it. He admits everything and begs for forgiveness.

Tony is a cinnamon roll and understands completely. He tellls Winston he understands, because really he does. Violet (who Tony doesn’t know is a super) is a supportive girlfriend and tells Tony all she knows about Winston.

The Rydinger’s are ok with joint custody because they see how broken Winston is, especially since his sister is in JAIL. They share pictures and stories with the older brother along with Sunday dinners.

Violet visits Evelyn in jail and tells her everything about Tony, because no one deserves to not know anything about their sibling. Tony starts visiting once he’s had some time to think about it and some gentle nudging from Violet. Once this happens Violet stops visiting, realizing that Evelyn won’t need her to relay information anymore. Besides Evelyn only begrudgingly listened to her because it was info about Tony.

When Evelyn realizes he doesn’t know about Violet’s powers, and Violet was actually the one to push him towards seeing her she can’t help but feel grateful. She also wishes to talk to Violet again because the young super is DATING her brother, and wanted the two youngest Deavors to be able to interact.

Nice sibling headcanons for Evelyn and Winston

-When they were younger they shared a room until they started to turn to teenagers and asked their parents for their own rooms.

-They probably also stayed up all night in their room talking about school, comic books, crushes, everything.

-Sometimes, in the morning, they'd be very tiered and would regret having stayed up so late.

-They would get into little game wars in which they hid each other's things until they eventually got tiered of it.

-They both were always good at drawing and sometimes would just sit together and draw stuff. Evelyn would draw designs and ideas, and Winston preferred drawing people like his family or the supers.

-They both also really liked Dancing and had created their own little jig together. As they grew up Evelyn started to hate dancing and would never do it, but secretly even as an adult she still remembered her choreography with Winston.

-Winston is 2 years older than Evelyn.

-Winston is an Aries and was born April 4, and Evelyn is a Taurus and was born on March 29

Win and Ev I imagine have a great sibling relationship, she teases him mercilessly but he’s a good sport and always positive. They have their disagreements but don’t let it get between them They’re the only family they have left in the world after all.

Violet and Voyd become BFFs, Violet has a small crush on Karen because of course. Karen is soooo cool and has BLUE hair and her powers are incredible! But Karen teases her about the cute boys at school and helps her navigate social situations and swears up and down that she’s not cool ‘At All’.

Sometimes Violet gets permission from her mom to go hang out with Karen and her college friends and she takes her to Beat Poetry nights at jazz clubs and lets her smoke off her cigarettes and Violet doesn’t really understand and doesn’t like cigarettes but pretends like she gets it all because she wants to be cool too.

Some more general headcanons

Evelyn used to love Supers as much as her brother and father did- especially the female Supers. Blazestone, Stratogale, and Psycwave where her ultimate favorites.

No one ever calls Winston ‘Win’ no matter how many times he’s said for people to (except for Mr. Incredible that one time in the movie). Evelyn used to when they were but she stopped completely when their parents died.

After being put on house arrest Evelyn will occasionally call Winston ‘Big Brother’ both playing on the fact that he’s older and referencing the novel 1984.

Headcanon here: One time after rather exhausting week fro the two of them, Evelyn and Killian spend their entire weekend doing nothing but drinking, watching TV and doing the “horizontal hug”, all inside Evelyn’s apartment. 

This does on for so long that Winston, worrying about his sister, goes to her apartment looking her her, when he gets there he finds the both of them lying on Evelyn’s bed, naked, watching TV covered in a blanket of beer bottles, their hair crazier then usual and laughing and delirious.

First Fic: Voyd is trans. And she just came out to Helen faster than that one trans lady in Mass Effect Andromeda.

Me: 

Tumblr? Tumblr, please, listen to me. Making a character a minority does not automatically make them better or more interesting. 

In fact, this seems remarkably contrived. Voyd barely knows Helen. "I used to be Cody” seems like something you’d work up to, not just drop in your first chat, especially if the fic is supposed to be set in the vaguely-sixties. Which I’m not entirely sure it’s supposed to, given Voyd’s job at Target in a modern uniform, but even in the present, there are very few people who would just drop that on a woman who’s nearly a stranger.

In fact, I’ve read all four fics, and Voyd being trans has basically nothing to do with the overall plot, except for the part where it gives Helen a chance to Show Concern and “adopt” Voyd. The other three fics don’t mention it even once. You could’ve replaced it with “I’m poor and estranged from my family over the whole powers thing”, which would actually be more relevant to the themes of the franchise, and something Helen could empathize ov -

Wait a second. Wasn’t Voyd getting a salary from the Deavour company? They must’ve paid her something, right? If nothing else, Evelyn mind-controlled them, which arguably makes the company liable, and that’s even if Winston wouldn’t just throw money and therapists at them out of sheer moral conviction. Voyd personally helped save the day-

Oh, wait. This whole “Voyd is trans” thing is a fandom meme, because she’s not traditionally feminine. Needless to say, 

Brick is much less popular for trans headcanons, even though she’s much, much more butch than Voyd. Says something about the fandom, doesn’t it?

Personally, if I was writing Trans Voyd, she wouldn’t come out until she trusted, really trusted Helen, after their friendship/”adoption” had more time to develop. Maybe Helen figures it out herself; we already know she’s good at sleuthing, so it wouldn’t be hard for her to go “hey, wait a minute” and have a talk with Voyd, who expects to be rejected*. There’d be hints before then, but I wouldn’t dump it on people right out of the gate. Heck, I’ve written LGBT characters before, and I somehow managed not to beat my readers over the head with their sexuality or use it to pander to diversity fetishists.

“Hey, aren’t you a Christian?” I hear you say. Yes, yes I am. And I’m complaining about a story which wrote a trans character poorly, and talking about how it could be done better. Being a minority should not be treated like a “you should care about this character now” button.

* To be fair, her body language, as described in the fic, appears to be anticipating a bad reaction, which leads to the question of “why are you just blurting this out?” Narratively speaking, it means a lot if Helen is the one who makes the first move. Especially if she has to take a second for it to sink in; even if she’s progressive - and she probably is - people need time to recontextualize things. Like that one scene in this season of The Flash with Barry in the van. Reaction shots are important, even in prose.

And if Voyd decides to come out, it should be in response to realizing she feels safe with the Parrs. Again, after development.

Do you have any winston and/or gazerbeam hcs?

Winston:-He’s the older sibling between himself and Evelyn. (Also, if you wanna add the approximately 500 siblings I’ve headcanoned into their family, he’s the eldest of them all.) 

-Despite the fact that he was older, Evelyn often stood up for him against bullies on the playground. He was sometimes bullied as a younger kid for being nerdy and a superhero geek. As he got older, though, his natural charm started attracting a lot of friends. 

-He and Evelyn grew up around supers due to their father’s close ties with the NSA. There were often supers around DevTech, and young Winston was on friendly terms with a lot of the OG supers (the generation before Bob and Helen’s). Teenage/college-aged Winston was personally acquainted with the new generation of glory days supers (especially Gazerbeam, wink wink).

-He’s got his Masters degree in marketing, and he’s very knowledgeable and savvy about the business world. He wanted to eventually take over his father’s business from an early age, and Mr. Deavor encouraged his son’s ambition.

-However, his passion for superheroes almost led him down a different path. In his early 20s, he scored a job at the NSA as Rick Dicker’s assistant (in no small part due to his parents’ past donations to the organization), and became even more passionate and well-versed about the world of superheroes. He thought he’d found his true calling, and his parents supported his dream. 

-However, only a few years after he got the job, supers were banned, and then shortly after that, his parents died, forcing him to abandon his work at the NSA to take over DevTech. 

-He’s a glass-half-full kind of guy, but sometimes he wishes his life had taken a different path; he wonders what could’ve been, if only supers had stayed legal and he was still at the NSA today. 

-After the events of Incredibles 2, when supers are re-legalized, Winston becomes the world’s most prominent supporter/advocate for them. He’s a direct benefactor for Voyd and the other wannabes, he stays close with the Incredibles, and he’ll always pay for an up-and-coming super’s costs, no questions asked - whether it be a suit consultation with Edna, special tech, publicity, he won’t hesitate to help supers with whatever they need.

Gazerbeam:-He has two sisters; he’s the youngest of the family.

-He grew up in the countryside of New York state, and moved to California as a young man to further his law education.

-His family loves him, but they never really understood him. He’s autistic, and on top of that, he’s got superpowers, and his family couldn’t really relate. However, he was still unquestionably One Of Them, and everyone knew his sisters would beat up anyone who messed with him.

-As I mentioned he’s autistic! He avoids eye contact (partially due to his laser vision), he has trouble with humor, a flat affect when he speaks, and isn’t the best at making connections with others - but those who get to know him have nothing but kind words to say about him, and once you’ve befriended Simon, he’s a loyal friend for life. 

-He wasn’t super popular in school, but he did have a few close friends who were glad to listen to him infodump about his interests. 

-He’s very intelligent, and he started college at the young age of sixteen; he always had a passion for law and intended to become a lawyer. Four years later, he finished his bachelor’s degree and moved to California to pursue further education. 

-He always had a passion for superhero law in particular, and he always wanted to put his legal education to use by defending superheroes in court. Eventually, he’d get his wish - he became a well-known superhero advocate and defender in the courtroom. 

-His friends - at least, those few close friends who are aware of his secret identity - marvel at Simon’s work ethic. He balances a large workload of hero work with his law career, and it seems like he’s always got something on the go. 

-He’s a very confident, competent superhero. In person he’s kind of awkward, blunt and a little “weird,” but doing hero work, he’s basically perfection. People everywhere marvel at his levels of BDE. 

-At the time when Simon died, he and Winston had been together for over 15 years, and were starting to discuss adopting a child. Simon’s not too good with kids, but he softened when he saw how much Winston wanted a family.

honestly its complicated.. bc mirage is co-responsible for so many deaths of supers and winston probably Knew some of these people (especially gazerbeam) but also saved the incredibles family and helped them escape. winston supports his sister having someone but its gonna take him some time but honestly he can tell mirage is a genuinely changed person and deeply regrets what she did. a lot of the parrs, while thankful that she helped them, still probably have a hard time fully trusting her but both helen and bob support evelyn and mirages relationship and are glad they have each other

Oh I could be here forever on this, too. Thankfully I've already written a massive post about the fixes I would have made to the movie.

Anyway, specific fixes aside, as a whole it's a good movie but I really feel like there's two camps of people who enjoyed/didn't enjoy the movie. The people who were in it for seeing the Parrs again loved it, but the people who were in it for seeing the villains, spy inspired stuff, and parody of classic superhero tropes (aka me) really didn't get any of that to the point that I legitimatly have trouble acknowledging it as like, an actual, canon sequel and not like, a movie length spinoff episode.

The movie isn't bad, of course, but personally it lacks what made the original so great to me.

I wonder how much of that was due to the fact that the movie got pushed up a year from it's original schedule, and how much of that was just because it didn't match my tastes. That being said, even if it did match my taste, I think the writing did suffer, and while that is likely due to the lost year of work part of me feels like Brad Bird is losing his edge? Like there are just some parts narratively that don't make a lot of sense, or could be a lot better with some minor fixes and Incredibles 2 just seems to lack the general polish of the first, and feels like Bird substituted a lot more content for fluff, whereas the in original literally the smallest details were plot relevant.

I also think that the art style change is a little weird. It's pretty difficult to notice at first, but the character designs are a lot more proportionally realistic than in the original, and while the returning characters have been tweaked to fit the new style (and just have more realistic designs for the most part anyway) the switch from the original cartoony style is really apparent when you compare characters like Syndrome and Mirage with characters like Evelyn and Winston. Not saying it's bad, but it is... weird.

Enough negativity aside though, I'm glad the movie exists. Without it Syndrome wouldn't be my f/o, and I'd probably still be horribly depressed and paranoid. Hell I'd rather have gone through all the bs that the Incredibles fandom caused than not have that movie.

The animation is beautiful, especially in action scenes like the helicopter scene and screenslaver fight. It's so well choreographed and it's those scenes where I can really tell that Brad Bird is putting his heart and soul into because I've never seen another director set up an animated scene quite like that. He shows so clearly that he believes animation is a medium and not a genre, because those scenes are shot the same way I'd expect a live action scene to be shot.

Michael Giacchino captures the same energy as the original score, even if it's not as spy-heavy in tone as the original (which, is what I personally loved out of the original soundtrack) but I think being able to carry that mood in a different genre is a mark of incredible talent regardless if the music doesn't personally appeal to me anymore.

The new character models are beautiful, and I wish the flashback memorial scene hadn't been cut because then we would have gotten to see Syndrome with the updated animation. That and a lot of the deleted scenes were really cool in general and I wish those had actually made it into the movie.

Also I really love the background characters. I headcanon her name is Barbra and someone needs to give her a break bc she was present in both the runaway train incident and the apartment explosion.
