I think the Wingmaidens are very underutilized in the Httyd fandom, like they could be so many things! A tribe of only women with a divine mission to take care of the Razorwhip population specifically with cool armor and bonded through some higher power to baby Razorwhips that can sense who the right person for them is and that have wings strong enough to carry a full-grown man?
They could be a safe haven, they could be a cult, they have a canonical connection to Valka, an accidental connection to Heather, there's an interesting aspect between them and the Dragon Riders as they're two groups with kind of the same goal, except the Dragon Riders fight for a wider range of dragons. Trans!Hiccup is a thing that I've been seeing (and exploring) a lot of as of late, what would the Wingmaidens view of him be? How do the Razorwhips know when their Wingmaiden wants to take flight and where? They can't even see and there is no obvious communication going on in the show itself, other than that whistling thing they do to call them.
So many possibilities!

Why Can't Minlout Be Together? (RTTE)
Tumblr media
Minlout | Heathlegs | Ruffthrok
The Short Answer? Because Minden isn't a Film character, and thus can't exist outside of the show. 😢
The Long Answer? Because Minden cannot leave the island.
Do not forget that she is a Wingmaiden. As such, she cannot leave the island for as long as the Razorwhips exist.
Since Wingmaidens spend their whole lives, or at least their entire maidenhoods (a period when a woman can marry and have kids before they get too old) caring for and protecting the Razorwhip dragon population. Since this would be a major decision and undertaking that cannot be reversed once made, let us assume that they're similar to many religious sects where newcomers have a grace period to see if this is right for them or not before they become full-fledged clergy members of a sect or congregation. As such, new Wingmaidens could have up to 6 months to learn the ropes and decide if this is for them or not.
With that logic, Minden, being Atali's right hand and obviously having been a Wingmaiden for a long time, cannot leave, as a result. Even if their customs allow for women to leave once they turn 40, it would still be a long time. However, since we're talking about an organization that exists to keep Razorwhips safe and their existence a secret, it might very well be that once a woman becomes a full-fledged Wingmaiden, she's there for life.
And since men aren't allowed to live on the island, Snotlout can't stay except for short visits. And obviously s*x is out of the question, since any man smell can affect a Wingmaiden's interactions with the female Razorwhips, who have instincts to be hostile against any male on account of their male counterparts being hostile towards their hatchlings and are even known for eating them. So it's likely that any male scent on a Wingmaiden could endanger a young Razorwhip from being accepted by their mother.
Of course, I'm just assuming due to the information we've been given by Atali. Though much is still unknown about how they operate and their rules and customs.
So, because of this, and because Minden isn't a Film character, Minlout is forever doomed to be star-crossed lovers. 😭
However, I have an article that will detail possible scenarios about how they CAN get together. (Click Here)
Hope you guys enjoyed my article on Minlout. Have a wonderful weekend!

wingmaidens have entered the chat!! background characters will be as if in-game gerudo since it makes no difference (wingmaiden bg characters have no distinct personalities either way)
Tumblr media
as the gerudo champion, i was originally going to make heather gerudo, but after thinking on it, i decided having her lose a set of parents and end up being taken in by someone else was more reflective of her canon story
to give minden relevancy (i love her) i thought it best that an actual gerudo be slated to inherit the throne from atali, rather than heather, who is hylian and has no blood claim
minden is a couple years older than heather, and they're super close. they're both warriors, but she held nothing against heather when the latter was chosen as champion. she's very proud of her cousin

11. What are your favourite locations in the Barbaric Archipelago?
I think I'd have to go with Vanaheim and Wingmaiden Island (yeah I cheated and picked two, it's my blog, deal with it lol) because I love that RTTE went so in depth with not only the characters, but also fleshing out literal culture and history for the dragons. The islands and their designs are so cool on their own, but the implications of what their functions are in dragon society are just so cool

ONE of the Thorston twins is transgender and you cannot change my mind. Basically, there's a really common trope in Medias (especially animated ones) for there to be a set of twins who are incredibly similar in look, save for the fact that one is a girl and one is a boy. Ruff and Tuff fit this trope. every official source for HTTYD stuff refers to them as fraternal twins, but my brain refuses to see them as anything but identical.
however. identical twins are pretty much always the same sex. there are incredibly rare exceptions, but that's boring imo. so that brings up my point- in order for them to, realistically, exactly resemble one another and also be a girl and a boy, one of them is trans.
question is, which one? it could be either. my vote is for Ruff, but there's pretty much an equal amount of evidence for either. Ruff, at multiple points in RTTE gets mistaken for a man, which while that's not necessarily indicative of anything, it happens multiple times, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. in Tuff's case, throughout the latter two movies, he ties his hair in front of his face and insists that it's his beard, getting really upset when it's cut. damn near EVERY other viking man shown has some sort of facial hair, except for tuff. what're the odds that he just Happened not to inherit the gene?
anyways, I think it's Ruff for no reason other than that I don't usually headcanon many women as trans and I think they deserve this one.

I wonder if the team behind RttE based the Wingmaidens on the Bog Burglars, considering the fact that they're both a tribe made-up entirely of women only and they both have quite a low view on men except for one man, that man being Hiccup. (Or Camicazi's sole exception is Hiccup)

if that preamble inspires you at all id love to see your take on kid heather with windshear as a hatchling!!!
I meant to get to this one for a while jidejdieniw it’s such a cute idea!! And then I got myself the new iPad, and it finally came in, and I remembered to get to this one! But omg I had so many different ideas for this one

Me: narratively speaking it doesn’t make sense for the dragon hunters, outcasts or berserkers to be comprised entirely of men.
Berk clearly has women warriors and doesn’t discriminate or delegate them to safer roles such as home defence. Women seem to be encouraged to be warriors and be muscly. There is a lot of interesting backstory to delve into with this, either drawing inspiration from the irl female vikings, or the darker implications of a war torn Berk desperate for all the warriors it could get its hands on regardless of birth rates (a man can have a hundred children a year, but a woman is limited to 1).
There are other tribes who blatantly follow these same practices, in some cases to higher extremes than berk. The Wingmaidens value female warriors above males as they are unable to manage the razorwhip population due to the animals gender bias. The defenders of the wing have equal male:female ratios in their village and seem to have a mandatory military service for all citizens, including women as all are in armour. Not to mention that they have a queen rather than the stereotypical chief, possibly mimicking the dragon kingdom that they worship.
Dagur doesn’t take offence to heather being a warrior, and there seems to be warrior women on berserker island, but the armada is shockingly made up entirely of men. The outcasts and dragon hunters take it a step further and have no women visible at any point. Compared to berk, the wingmaidens and the defenders of the wing, this is a massive discrepancy.
The obvious answer is that the creators didn’t have the budget for multiple character models, and so they prioritised the male models to fit the audience expectations. The defenders of the wing only have 1:1 gender ratios because their models are reused hiccup and heather models. The wingmaidens are the only culture with consistent multiple female models because it came later in the series, when the creators realised they had an extreme male heavy cast.
This is incredibly gross and should be talked about more as most modern (5 years old is still modern) cartoons have a male heavy focus in both characters and viewerbase despite a great deal of people claiming that women are fairly represented in media, and that feminism is no longer needed.
Tumblr Guy: women weren’t included for historical accuracy.
The dragons: 👀
