So. You want to know more about King of Hell Danny, is it?

Well. Well. He's certainly Danny. Or more specifically I've decided as of recent, Dark Danny. I'm waffling on whether he's Dan Dark Danny or just... Phantom sans Plasimus. The latter feels less likely as i try to flesh him out, but you never know with these guys... he does prefer to look like his 14 yr old self though.

But whatever version he is of himself... it's post-TUE, and he hates himself more than anyone is allowed to know.

Not sure exactly how he ended up in the SPNverse (portal probably!), but he'd definitely prefer going back to his own world/dimension in a heavily buried sense of self-flagellation and unreliable narrator-ness.

Everyone is waiting for him there, not here, wherever he is exactly. This implies anyone is left alive, but he never said that. People (Crowley, etc.) just assume so.

and he's the worst lil jerk you could ever meet, at a first, second, and third, glance, anyway.

Smug cat, indeed. He does what he wants, when he wants, how he wants, and taking over Hell felt right. (isn't that where he'd go? he thinks, after learning Hell is actually real.)

he's overpowered for sure, but it also comes from a misconception for what he is. Not a demon, not human, a secret Third Thing: weird ghost.

i like to think most regular ghost counter measures work on him, but no one thinks to try them because that ain't no ghost??? He plays the part really well though, pretending to be a demon (and gets mislabelled a crossroads demon for his red eyes) -- it doesn't bother him to kill people, but he doesn't go out of his way to do it anymore.

KOH!Danny having it out for the Winchesters is a very thoughtless and fun thing, and it would piss him off when they try to summon Crowley, but in all actuality, he'd probably end up begrudgingly working with them or something.

And ultimately betray them.

I also think his goal would be to fuse with Lucifer when he's freed from the Cage. That should give him enough power to bust a hole back to his OG dimension, right?

maybe. Who knows.

You can certainly find him at DIY skateparks across the globe. He's an asshole to anyone and everyone, but god have mercy on anyone looking to cause trouble while he's trying to have a good time (he feels guilty about it, though, having fun -- it's a circle of shame/guilt/fuck it we ball mentality, here for a good time not a long time).

he can 'see' Castiel's wings and if in his presense, will pluck at them because he's annoying like that.

Crowley became his lap dog though, regardless of intial beheadings because... Hell generates a lot of paperwork the way Crowley was running it, and KOH!Danny don't got the time for all of that.

eventually I'm sure someone will figure him out, ghost weaknesses and all, but it's not 1:1 SPNverse ghost: no bones to burn, no records of him being alive ever, etc., but he's definitely solid enough.

i could see a later quest like what the Winchesters did to find Crowley's remains, but they'd spiral down a hole of "where hell did this creature even come from???" and the Men of Letters/Angels/anyone wouldn't know jack about what he even is exactly.

i'm so rusty on SPN though... but those are my cobbled together ideas. I'd place him mid-ish seasons Supernatural (because ive only really seen s4 thru s8...) but i think the 'hijinks' of later seasons could be fun with the seriousness of early, early seasons sprinked in!

Last week I started a fundraising game where I would create whichever pumpkin carving stencil won the poll, in exchange for you guys helping to raise a certain amount of money for this verified GFM by the end of that week.

Not only did you guys do that, early, but you also surpassed the goal set for that week!

So, we're going to do it again!

But first, here's the stencils you won last week. Bill Cipher won first place in the poll. And, as a reward for beating TikTok, I made a second stencil with the second-place winner of the poll, Deadpool.

If we can increase the amount currently raised from $33,146 to $33,300 by Saturday, Sep. 14th, I will make another pumpkin carving stencil of whichever fandom character wins the poll below, posting it for free download on my Ko-Fi.

That's roughly $150 dollars in a week- slightly higher than last week's goal, but this is still super doable! You guys were able to surpass last week's goal, I have no doubt we can meet this week's!

“And between record store day and Phantom Traveler’s release, Q2 is looking to break records for us,” Zachariah droned on.

“Well, it’s the least they could do,” Dick added glibly.

You couldn’t roll your eyes, you were on camera, but you wanted to. Crowley didn’t reply, but Zachariah chuckled and took a beat to agree before going on down the line of his report. Bobby huffed, but kept a lid on it, which told you how much he knew Dick was right.

“Things are shaping up well with pre-orders and the appearances Bobby and company have lined up between Vegas and New Orleans with the album release.  should outshine their previous album sales by a wide margin,” Crowley tacks on, almost bored with the success.

You set that up, not Bobby, but you kept your mouth shut, nodding.

“Y’all can thank Y/N for that, you know,” Bobby said gruffly.

“Of course,” Dick agreed offhandedly, eyes darting down to other parts of his screen.

Thank God for Bobby. You simply smiled and kept listening.

“Sounds great, people! Let’s check back the week of the release to ensure we’re still on track. We’ve got a lot of numbers to move to get in the black here, but I see good things happening,” Dick smarmed and instantly sent a meeting invite for the following month. 

“Thank you!” you replied dutifully and closed the window for the chat. After accepting the invite and adding it to your personal calendar, you exhaled long and hard. You checked your phone, Bela had called again and left another two text messages. You ignored her. She could wait.

You called Bobby for a mix of mutual griping and to debrief about where that put you all going forward. 

Without even a greeting, Bobby started, “I swear they get dumber every quarter.”

“Tell me about it. Thanks for having my back in there, though, I was starting to see red by the end.”

“You and me both, darlin’.” Bobby huffed. “The amount of stuff you get done is amazing. Even without all the run-around from the last tour, you are doing more than anybody I’ve seen in your position. We appreciate ya, even if the suits can’t see past their nose jobs.”

You beamed.

“Thanks. So, what’s on the agenda for the week? I know Dean and Sam took Gibson and Pamela to the zoo.”

“Yeap. Got the Midway Museum tomorrow if you have time, got tickets for anybody who wants to go. Might be good time for pictures if you need some candids for the socials.”

You knew this was his way of telling you to come, he even gave you justification for doing it on so called work hours.

“Maybe. I might just steal some from the band. Too much to get done before the show on Thursday.”

“Well, you’re welcome to join us if you get caught up or not.”

“Thanks.” It felt like all you could say to him today. It was a small word with a lot of connotations, but you were grateful. You owed Bobby so much. Though he never gave anything he didn’t want to give or for any form of repayment. He was too good for this industry. They all were.

“I’ll keep you posted. I have calls with the next couple of venue coordinators today and then some event security stuff tomorrow morning with Benny for some non-venue signings and stuff.”

“You still want to do the battered women's shelter thing?”

“The domestic violence survivors fundraiser in Vegas? Absolutely.”

Bobby hummed.

“I know what you’re thinking, Bobby. And that’s exactly why we’re doing it.”

“Do you think it looks like pandering?”

“I think it looks like community service. And if I didn’t think Dean could handle it, I wouldn’t have signed him up for it.”

“Even after that little disappearing act on Saturday?”

“Dean is a domestic abuse survivor, Bobby. Part of what he’s gone through is accepting that.”

“Yeah, but Cas—.”

“Cas is still family. And he didn’t press charges. And you know Dean—- penance is something he needs to do for himself, too.”

Bobby sighed. “Remind me not to get on your bad side.”

“Trust me, this is still my good side.”

Bobby actually chuckled at that. “I bet! Okay, I should get going, promised the missus we’d hit the shops before dinner.”

“Have a good one.”

“Alrighty, bye then.”

You smiled at your desk as Bobby hung up. He was happy and Annie was good for him. It didn’t matter their pasts, they made it work, and made each other better along the way.

Which seemed utterly remarkable and unattainable for somebody like you.

But if anybody deserved it, it was them.

You put down your phone and pulled up Twitter, it was time to dig through the chaos and do what you did best: highlight the good, the band's synergy and the new momentum and bury the bad. 

Which seemed to include you this time around, unfortunately.

After Twitter, you tackled Insta, Reddit and even FB, though most people cross posted the same images and anecdotes, some people only used one of the bunch. And some only used them on pain of death, namely Dean. Meanwhile, Bela had posted a couple of great shots from the afterparties, which you liked as the band and as yourself. 

You were crabby, not petty.

And busy, damnit.

The next morning, Sam smirked at you when he caught your eye in the hotel’s gym. He was already sweating from running outside, but must have come back to stretch or work something more intensely. What you weren’t expecting was Dean to be hot on his heels, equally as sweaty, equally as mischievous.

“Trouble! How’s business?” 

You rolled your eyes and took out an earbud, not sure you really heard them.

“What’s up?”

“We’re gonna lift— you want in?” Sam was teasing you now.

You pedaled stiffly and shook your head. “Fuck no, I’m good here, got another ten mile circuit after this breather.”

“Suit yourself,” Dean taunted and grinned before he crossed his legs and touched his toes. What the hell? Luckily there was only one other guest using the elliptical, so they weren’t being complete nuisances, yet.

They weren’t even directly in your line of sight, otherwise it could have gotten awkward, and distracting.

Still, you felt them keep glancing at you, making faces, and even cheering for you when you shifted up with your ass out of the seat to get the best angle for the various hills. You flipped them off, but kept your eyes forward and your earbuds in place.

Thirty minutes later, you groaned and stepped off the stationary bike. Dean and Sam had been talking more than doing curls with the free weights, obviously being dorks about each other’s efforts.

Boys.

“Good workout?” Dean asked as you sanitized your equipment. Sweat clung to your oversized tank top, all down your back, and between your legs. Thank god you wore your black workout leggings today.

“Yeah? You?” You smirked as Dean made a show of extending his movements slowly and pointedly. Yes, Dean, your arms should be illegal, you thought.

“Good, uh— need help stretching?”

You looked at him a little dumbfounded and then back at Sam, who seemed just as surprised as you were by the offer.

“Nah, I’ve got my bands and stuff in my room. Though, I bet Sam would love to see you try and bullshit your way through a cool down routine,” you tacked on, trying to laugh off the offer. Inside you were imagining Dean’s weight against you, pushing your knees up and out, flexing your hip joints with his thick fingers digging into the meat of you…

“Hey! I was just being nice.”

“Dude,” Sam muttered.

You sighed and gave Dean an apologetic smile. “Maybe another time.”

You pretended not to hear the series of slaps that happened behind your back as you made your way to the elevator and your generic hotel shower.

Benny treated you to lunch after your video calls with the S.A.F.E. House staff and the one with the folks at the radio station who’d be interviewing the band the morning of the first Vegas show. 

“Saw your tweet on Cas’ post,” you added thoughtfully, midway through your shrimp po boys.

“Yeah, well, didn’t want him thinking he done wrong by us.”

You chewed and nodded, silently telling him that you got it, appreciated it even. 

“You hear anything else from the guys about the last show, you know, after Dean disappeared and, um, everything?”

You needed to know if the guards were loyal, but mostly you wanted to know what they had seen.

“Seemed pretty anticlimactic to most of them, from what I hear. Dean came through, sober and clean as a whistle. —Even the venue goons didn’t clock anything weird,” Benny pointed out before taking another bite, his teeth flashing in the afternoon sun.

After a few moments, Benny continued. “But, uh, that label stooge you got following Bela? He’s the one to worry about, really, seems to keep his cards close to the vest.”

Damn, you knew he was right before he even finished the sentence. Tiny would be the one to squeal to Crowley, or worse, Dick, at the end of the day. You wondered if you could buy him off or treat him in other ways while on the road. Bela wasn’t scheduled to be around until the second Vegas show, you had some time to figure out his motives. Or if he even cared at all.

“Yeah, yeah, you’re right.”

Benny sniffed and looked around the small patio outside the restaurant. “Bela’s not really Dean’s girl is she? She some kind of clout pusher?”

You swallowed and took a long slurp of your iced tea, washing away the now muted flavor of your lunch. “I honestly don’t know anymore, Benny. They’ve definitely been enjoying each other’s company more than I expected.”

“Perhaps—- but don’t you worry none. She’s not the type you settled down with and he’s got eyes deeper than the cut of her fancy tops.”

You huffed. Benny certainly had a way with words.

“It’s okay, Benny— I’m not in a place to be jealous.”

He just raised his eyebrows at you and took another bite.

“I did this— I set them up. I’d guess you’d call it reaping what I sow or something?”

Benny nodded and shrugged. “Or something.”

“You won’t— you won’t tell anybody, right? His story is safe with you?”

“Doll, I’ve been covering that boy’s ass since before Lisa— I’m true.”

“I know, Benny, sorry—- it’s just so much posturing all the time. I just want to take pictures and show the world how badass they are. I want people to hear the stories behind the songs, because it shows they’re human too. Sometimes I wish—-”

“Wishin’ for rain in the desert aint doin’ anybody a lick of good. You know the score, you just gotta beat them at their own game. Dean’s a good man, he knows what’s real. Don’t think we all don’t know that, too.”

“Thanks.”

“Anytime. Know who your people are, if you trust Bela— then she won’t let Tiny think anything is up. Friends have each other’s back against the world, right?”

“Right,” you agreed, suddenly feeling ridiculously immature for ignoring her for the past few days.

“Eat up, cher. It’s a long tour. You’ll need your strength.”

That was an understatement, but you dug in anyway.

“Y/N, listen— I’ve resorted to leaving you a voicemail. It’s come to that. I’m sorry. I am. I didn’t mean anything disparaging about you the other night— just maybe about how you treat Dean. Not that it's bad, overkill more like, but it’s not like you’re bad or weak for doing it.--- I know how much you loved her, Y/N, I know. Him too, it seems. I just don’t want you wasting so much of your life trying to make up for losing her. It hurts to see you so— subservient. You are so much more than an errand girl. So I’m sorry for my lack of tact. But I’m not sorry I brought it up. Okay? There. Call me back and yell at me properly already, Jesus.”

Chapter 32: Tronco

You know what? No, I'm not done talking. I started writing this in the tags and then went "shit why am I doing that this is MY POST I can just frickin write it in the actual post".

See, the thing is: halfas, true halfas, are rare.

No, you don't get it. They are rare.

As in, they're mythic levels of rarity. It's a word for an idea more than an actual entity. Vlad and Danielle? They don't actually count. They aren't properly balanced. Vlad skews towards human and was infected by ecto; Danielle is more like a human-leaning neverborn.

Danny doesn't know this, because Clockwork has been forbidden by the Observants to tell him. So Danny isn't aware of how stacked the odds were against him coming out of that portal the way he did. Just a few of the requirements:

being in a portal while it opens. This is possibly the easiest requirement.

having enough contact with the Infinite Realms/Ghost Zone/ecto prior to this that the portal won't just kill you. This takes small amounts of exposure over the course of a(t least one) lifetime.

being of a bloodline that has had dealings with the supernatural. While not a hard-and-fast rule itself, it plays into the above: having enough contact with the other side prior to the portal opening that it doesn't kill you instantly. This is usually not a single-lifetime occurrence. This is generational. This is Danny's family going back to the Fenton-Nightingales, all living in the same area with a thin veil between the realms.

All in all, this isn't rarity on the scale of winning the lottery. This is rarity on the scale of picking a specific grain of sand from all the beaches in the world.

Which is why when a certain researcher, a man of his letters you could say, meets the Winchesters? He will be very interested in learning more about a certain phantom.

Hey DP Fandom

Has anyone come up with a word to use instead of "halfa"? My headcanon is that "halfa" is a slur used by ghosts against them, and that there should be a neutral term. (Or even possibly a positive term, something that translates from Ghost Speak [whatever you want to call Ghost Speak] to "perfect balance" or something.) Yes I know the fandom is divided on this thought; this is just where I'm currently at.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Episode Four: Phantom Traveler

Dean Winchester in the Supernatural episode Phantom Traveler

This is not one of my favorite episodes and this post is going to be shorter than most because there isn't much to delve into with Dean. So to make up for that, enjoy multiple screenshots of Dean from the episode.

Beckoned by someone John and Dean once helped with a poltergeist, Sam and Dean investigate the cause of a plane crash that left only seven survivors and seems to have been caused by something...supernatural.

So for starters, this is the first demon episode (technically if we don't count a demon killing Mary in the pilot).

It's also Sam-centric. I guess we could call the pilot Sam-centric too which would mean at episode four we have two episodes that focus more on Dean and two that focus more on Sam. Fair enough.

We get a couple of nuggets about Dean in this one. The concerned big brother is there when he worries about Sam's lack of sleep and then the big brave brother is there when he tells Sam, who isn't sleeping because he's back hunting and all the shit is getting to him, that he's "Nerver afraid" "Not really."

Sam tries to dispel this by pointing out that Dean is sleeping in the motel with a machete under his pillow but Dean rebukes that by telling him that sleeping with a weapon isn't "fear," it's "precaution."

I believe Dean. I don't think Sam does.

So someone who John and Dean did a job for calls Dean about the crash and when they get there he tells Sam that John was always bragging about him being at college and he could tell that he was proud of Sam.

"He talked about you all the time," the dude says, much to Sam's surprise.

Dean is not surprised. Dean doesn't look bothered by it either but it made me wonder how many rides in the Impala Dean had to endure where John talked about how great Sam was doing while Dean sat there grinding his teeth.

We see Dean leaving a copy place having just created spotless fake IDs indicating he and Sam work for Homeland Security. Sam comments about how very illegal, even for them, that is and I really do wonder what planet Sam lives on sometimes.

Something I'm starting to notice about Sam that I hadn't before. I always fell into that "Oh Sam's actually the more sensitive one when it comes to talking to witnesses and survivors," mindset but, with this rewatch I'm noticing that he puts on a fake sympathetic voice, going all soft and gentle, when he talks to them. It almost sounds condescending. Dean doesn't do that. He just talks to them normally, like they're people not just victims.

Another neat Dean tidbit: He created his own EMF reader out of (using Sam's words) "a busted up Walkman." Sam sees this as something to ridicule. But me? We haven't yet learned that Dean only has a GED and a can-do attitude, but with this we learn that he's fucking smart enough to BUILD HIS OWN EMF READER FROM A FREAKING WALKMAN. So STFU, Sammy.

We get some insight from Dean into demons that stops being true after a few seasons:

"Demons, they don't want anything, just death and destruction for its own sake. This is big. And I wish Dad was here."

The "I wish Dad was here" kills me because he so wants his father around and this being a rewatch we know John's just being a dick right now and not actually missing which makes just about everything that happens before they meet up with him again that much worse.

Sam actually agrees about wishing John was there but I suspect it's more because of Jessica than it is wanting his dad around.

Then we get to a part of Dean's character that I can truly relate to. We learn he's afraid, like really afraid, of flying.

And guess what Sam does with that information? If you said reacts compassionately and tries to gently explain to Dean that while he understands getting on the plane is really the only way they can save everyone, you'd be wrong. He pretends to understand and guilts Dean with the old "I can do this myself" bullshit KNOWING Dean isn't going to let his brother get on a plane alone that is destined to crash.

So when Dean sucks it up and gets on the plane, guess what Sam does? Makes fun of him for being afraid.

I do like that we get this gem from dean when Sam expresses his incredulity about him being afraid to fly:

"Why do you think I drive everywhere, Sam?"

Great way to get that into the show's canon too so fans won't ask the question.

Another cute Dean quirk: He hums Metallica on the plane to calm himself down (Which, again, Sam makes fun of him for.)

They bring in some demon lore that doesn't really hold up for the following fourteen seasons. Apparently they go after people who have addictions or emotional distress. I mean, sometimes they do after season one, but they also just jump into any old meatsuit they can whenever they want.

Sam brings this up to tell Dean it's why he needs to calm the fuck down about flying - he's worried the demon will possess Dean. Still no reason to be giving him constant shit about it Sam. There were better ways.

Also, is this the only episode where they say "Christo" to check for a demon possession? (Also don't get me started on how Christo isn't really the right word there...)

So for the sake of the story, the demon tells Sam he knows what happened to his girlfriend. Sam exorcised the demon while Dean kind of freaks out quietly and then we get pissy/emo Sam because now he has even more reason for revenge.

The flight attendant they help mouths thank you to Dean but he doesn't get a kiss...and he really deserved at least a hug for this one.

Big reveal at the end of the episode is that John reactivated his phone and his outgoing message gives Dean's phone number for anyone looking for help. Which gives the brothers a new hope for finding him - while pissing them off that he isn't contacting them.

But before that happens, the kicker for me is the guy they helped telling them "Your dad's gonna be real proud" They're 26 and 22 and this should not mean as much to them as it does. (I mean, yeah, you want your parents to be proud of you, but these two NEED John to be proud of them because, presumably, he's never actually told them he's proud of them.)

Man, this show sometimes.

Some notes for posterity:

I love that Dean is so hell bent against wearing suit. This is the first episode we see them in suits (and actually see them go GET the suits) and Dean is not happy. "I look like one of the Blues Brothers."

First episode with a demon. Lots of lore that doesn't get brought through the rest of the series.

First time we see them use holy water (it hurts the hosts body in this episode, doesn't seem to do that going forward)

First time they use an exorcism (Sam has to read it)

Sam lets loose with a "get this."

We get our first scene of Dean sleeping (On his stomach in a t-shirt and shorts. I don't think we see Dean in shorts again until season four's After School Special.)

The significant music from this episode comes from Black Sabbath - Paranoid, and Rush - Working Man, and on the plane Dean hums Metallica - Some Kind of Monster.

The brothers pose as agents from Homeland Security but don't give out their names. When Dean calls Amanda the flight attendant to trick her into not getting on the plane, he tells her he's Dr. James Hettfield from St. Francis Memorial Hospital.

This hunt takes place pretty much in the sky but also they're on the East Coast...a place they don't seem to travel to very often.

Dean wears John’s jacket in this episode.

This one is rife with movie references. The already mentioned nod to The Blues Brothers, there is a Poltergeist reference (when they are talking about poltergeists, off screen someone says "I loved that movie," Dean specifically references The Exorcist, and for good measure, he also references The X-Files with a "...we just don't have time for the whole 'the truth is out there' speech right now.")

2. Lucifer x Hazbin Hotel crossover

Charlie visiting Lucifer on earth (maybe even at the police station???). Humans are baffled bcos Lucifer always acts like a casanova and then gets soft when he sees his little girl

3. Charlie's first time on earth

This could go many ways:

- Charlie is confused about earth (why humans seemingly all hate each other)

- Charlie is confused about earth (why it's so peaceful)

The halls of Hell twist and burrow deeper than imaginable by human or demon alike, but they never let a scream escape. Century old fear flees through the winding crossroads, the throats they were dragged from long since slashed and scorched and sewn to silence. There’s room for more, always one soul off the rack set loose on new meat. Their first times are deafening, for the torturers and tortured alike.

In the center of that cruelly constructed web, poised with an ear at each door to listen for his pupils' hesitation, with eyes over every shoulder to critique their artistry, with bloody hands guiding all the whelps still trembling from the pain he dealt them to take their fear out on some fresh-faced soul they never ask the name of, is the master of torture.

And Alastair loves his work.

The sweetest point is in turning them, and he can taste it now on this soul as he strips skin from muscle and leaves it to sizzle across hot coals. Working with souls allows certain freedoms. Flesh is weak—a balancing act of where to tear and where to stop the bleeding before he didn’t have anything left to play with—but he has missed the challenge these past few decades, locked away with all his fellows demons. That'll all change, but not soon enough for his liking. He takes his frustration out on this lesser work—a mass of corruption coming to a boil—severing tendons for relief as it wordlessly screeches.

Alastair feels Sam’s presence long before he sees him.

There’s no denying what he is or how he burns. A soul like that was meant for one creature to touch. Salivating at the thought of squeezing it between Alastair’s own fingers is blasphemy at best and mutiny at worst, but if Sam wants him to stop, it’ll take nothing less than a direct command from on high. Higher than Sam himself. For now.

Their Boy King fancies himself a ruler on promises whispered by Azazel, and he likes to take stock of his kingdom when he’s not walking the Earth to break the Devil's chains. Alastair remembers the first time Sam journeyed down into the belly of the beast to meet him, horrified by all the work done in Hell’s name like he thought his inheritance was a pretty destiny and none of what had grown out of it. Alastair named Sam crimes and punishments: a murderer here set upon by hellhounds, an adulterer there frozen alive, and if he slipped a few times and forgot to tell Sam about the ones only there out of desperation or love or sheer stupidity, then that was Sam’s fault for not choosing to push. He was a smart boy; he knew they dealt an even hand to every soul, no matter how much they screamed they weren’t deserving of it. If he didn’t want to look, Alastair wouldn’t force him.

He might get less visits if he did, and he wouldn’t want that.

He lifts his head on Sam’s approach. He wonders if Sam can smell the skin cooking, burning now. If it makes Sam hungry. Alastair hasn’t been in possession of a real stomach in centuries, but even he gets phantom pangs of it when he roasts a body. (Easily satisfied, if he wants. Maybe next time, he’ll offer Sam a bite. Maybe next time, Sam will be so used to his own station that he won’t question accepting it.)

"Sammy," he lets the word slink off of his tongue to caress Sam, and the way it riles him up pleases Alastair to no end. Weaker demons make that mistake all the time. Too chummy with their king, too fooled by the human shell around the soul meant to be a mirror for Lucifer. Sam likes to drain them, blood and smoke and screams. His power runs over Alastair, but Sam doesn’t try to strangle him for his insubordination. He’d rather growl warnings at Alastair as punishment and leave it at that, and that's not going to do anything but encourage him. "Do you want to join in? I’ve got one on the tipping point for you."

Alastair was one of Lucifer’s firsts. He still remembers the face of his Father.

Sam would love to know that Lucifer wore disgust the same way he does, and that’s exactly why Alastair won’t be the one to tell him. Have to leave the boy some secrets for when Lucifer ruins him, after all.

"I’m not helping you create demons," Sam says. Alastair tuts, peeling free the first layer of muscle with a deft hand. The soul whimpers, and they both ignore it.

"But you’ll gladly use them." He beckons at Sam, curling his fingers slow enough to be a taunt. Or a seduction. "Come meet your cannon fodder." The greatest skill Alastair has isn’t his capacity for cruelty or his vast imagination; it’s in how to apply both. He sees the knot of guilt in Sam—that unfortunate way he clings to his humanity like it does him any good down here—and he presses on it mercilessly. "If you really wanted this to stop, you’d make me." He lays a hand on the red and pink lump that once resembled a person. "I think you could still save him. Tear me apart, my Lord." Sam’s jaw is twitching, and for a moment, Alastair can feel Sam’s power sink into his charred soul like fingers digging between ribs to the soft organs underneath.

He grins, all teeth, drumming nails into his victim. Anticipation courses through his veins.

Sam lets him go.

He glares at Alastair as he comes closer. Alastair admires the way the smoke from the burning skin curls around his body. (The Sam who first came to him would have gagged. He’s learning. Good boy.)

The soul squirms under Alastair’s grip. It's hard to keep it still with how slick with blood and other fluids it is. If it wants a look at Sam so badly, it can have one. Alastair releases it to flop pathetically before Hell’s king. He follows its twitching progress and kicks it in the side to speed it along to Sam. There’s something familiar in its bloodshot eyes as they bulge out of its skinless face.

Hope. Alastair licks his lips. He doesn’t see that every day. Most broken things down here stay broken, but this one thinks anyone cares about saving it.

He stores that bit of inspiration away for later. An artisan who can't quickly adapt new methods is hardly worthy of being called a master of his trade.

The soul raises pulpy, naked hands up towards its only possible savior. Its flesh barely clings to its fingers. Sam reacts without a thought, stepping out of its reach and slapping them away. Alastair watches him waver between seeing this thing as once human and understanding it as worthless meat, fit only to be remolded in the image taught to Alastair by Lucifer himself. Sam's part in this is over, though Alastair delights in watching his empathy die to revulsion as he rejects the soul a second time. The soul’s hands fall in despair, then shake in rage, then rise again to Sam with one last plea for mercy. Alastair watches its humanity fully rot away as Sam slams his foot into its chest. A meaty thud sends it rolling across the floor into the coals, its burnt flesh sticking to its back. Now when it crawls back towards Sam, it understands its place. Another supplicant to throw to the front lines. Maybe this one will even break a seal all on its own and be rewarded with Sam not killing it for a quick fix.

Probably not. Alastair knows his own handiwork very well. He won’t be seeing this one again if it leaves Hell, except melted on the insides of a human once an angel makes short work of it.

"That’s your king you’re groping. Careful. He bites," he tells it. It cringes from him, afraid of one creator and revering the other. He scoops a coal into his hand as it gazes up at Sam, worshipful, and strikes it in the back of the head with one throw, denting its skull. "Get out," he spits at it. Sam can’t even bring himself to look at what he's helped make. It drags itself from the room, leaving behind only a slippery trail of blood and the scent of burnt flesh. "Good job with that one," Alastair praises.

Sam’s eyes flick to his, full of pride before his failing morality gives another wheeze and reminds him what shame is.

"If I could break all the seals myself-"

"But you can’t, boy." Sam takes a step towards Alastair. Another demon might have faltered. Alastair holds his gaze. "You waste all your time moping about this, and you won’t break any at all."

"I can replace you," Sam snaps. "Lilith learned to torture first-"

"But I learned it best." Alastair sounds gleeful, and only half of his delight is for the skill he wields. The other half is at the picture of Sam trying to order Lilith to do anything. He might be all of Lucifer that they can touch right now, but he is not Lucifer.

Sam huffs furiously. Sometimes, Alastair gets the sense that Sam can see the path between his little lamb hooves, bursts of clarity as he’s lead to slaughter that make him want to slip the leash. Too bad for him, the crown’s too heavy to escape now that he’s accepted it, and Lucifer is inevitable.

He’s glorious in that way. He’s the broken hope in every soul’s eyes made manifest. Alastair tries to repaint his vision for them all, again and again and again, maggot after maggot.

"Do you want me to put you on the rack, Sam?" Alastair can barely keep the mocking tone out of his voice. Everything Sam allows just makes him want to push further. It’s intoxicating, like talking back to his God and always getting an answer. Lucifer would never have tolerated it. Sam’s more fun than he ever was, the one quality he has over the devil.

Alastair moves in before Sam can react. Sam still carries his body in Hell, unlike every other human soul Alastair gets to play with. He can die. That’s so much further than he’d allow Alastair to go, but the tease of it makes Alastair want to moan.

"I’ve played with vessels before. They fall much easier than you’d think," Alastair says. "A load of martyrs begging for me to start carving, like enough suffering would win back Heaven’s attention." Sam stiffens as Alastair touches him, running his hand up Sam’s chest. His pulse is pounding in his throat, and Alastair could rip it out of him with one swift motion, teeth bared to see if any of him tastes like Lucifer did, too. If Sam burned Alastair's gums off and turned his teeth to ash, it'd still be worth it. "Is that what it’ll take to ease your guilty conscience?"

At his most base, Alastair’s no better than the kowtowing demons who worship at Sam’s feet and crave his touch. He’s just a little more aware, a little more willing to take from Sam than to wait to be given attention. He slides his hands over Sam’s body. Sam’s breath is coming fast and hot against Alastair’s face, and he steals it like he needs the air at all, like Hell didn’t suffocate him a long time ago.

"Do you want it, Sam?" he says. "Do you think it’ll bring you closer to Him?" Alastair is drawing bars of a cage down Sam’s chest—one, two, three—before Sam grabs his hand and finally puts a stop to it.

"Or I could throw you on there," Sam snaps back. "How long has it been since someone put you on the rack, Alastair? Maybe that’s what you need to learn your place." His grip is crushing, and his power turns to a fine knifepoint against Alastair’s throat.

Alastair starts to laugh.

"Please, Sammy." Sam’s mouth twists in a snarl. "I’d love to give you pointers. What’s your poison? Boiling water? Ants and honey?" He tips his head into the invisible pressure of Sam’s power to murmur to him. "You always seemed like a disembowelment man to me. I can show you wonderful things you could do with my insides." There’s hunger across Sam’s face now. Alastair wants to stoke it until it rises out of Sam’s control. "Say the word, and I’ll lay out the tools for you myself."

He knows Sam can feel it the same way he can. There’s always further to fall.

Alastair will push him right over the edge of a cliff.

Sam can’t take his eyes off of Alastair. His power, glutted on blood and fury, coils up and around Alastair's corrupted form like barbed wire. When he chokes on it, he still laughs. Sam has drive and talent and absolutely no finesse.

(And Alastair's had far worse clay to mold.)

The strength with which Sam throws him back would shatter bones to dust. Another thing that'll serve him well, now and when Lucifer gets to him: a flair for the dramatic. Hell obeys its King better even than his demons do. It reshapes itself. The rack is a bed of nails that Alastair is pressed into, each point pinning him further. His true form stretches to touch as many as he can and feel them pierce deeper.

Being given this life is a fond memory, the Devil kneeling over his body as he renamed him, gave him new purpose. Sam looks more like Lucifer with every step he takes.

Sam is still too human. Alastair isn't going to make a demon out of him—either a sniveling wretch fresh off the rack or the cream of the crop of Lucifer's finest. No, he needs to bring Sam closer to Lucifer. How do you squeeze a human soul until an archangel bleeds from it?

"Start slow," he urges. "You don't want to lose the stomach for it too soon." He twists under Sam's power and pulls himself barely free from the nails only to expose soft parts for Sam to tear into.

Sam bears down on him like he can force Alastair into submission. He considers playing along for Sam's benefit, a reward for good marks, but in the end, it's better to provoke Sam than to praise him. They all have their roles in aiding Sam's becoming. If Azazel's is to guide him and Lilith's is to challenge him, than Alastair's here to break him in for Lucifer to ride all the way up to the pearly gates.

Sam stops himself. Alastair watches his hesitation bend under the weight of everything Sam's made of. All the times he's been told this path is the right one for him. All the moments he's caught his breath enough to realize he never had a choice in it anyway. All the angels he's learned to slaughter that look down on him. All the demons who wait for him to contain their God. And every little jab of Alastair's own picking away at the cracks in him until he can't take it anymore and shatters what's left of his restraint all on his own.

Sweeter than turning a soul himself is watching Sam break all on his own and revel in it as he descends on Alastair to learn the same techniques that Lucifer passed to him. The mirror is Sam, but the reflection is Alastair's, standing in Lucifer's place to shape Sam until the final seal breaks.

s01e04 - Phantom Traveler

This episode is one I honestly haven't watched a lot, the first 3 supernatural episodes I know like the back of my hand, but every episode until we get to 'home' I barely remember.

So this'll be fun to rewatch in much more detail.

All I remember about this episode is that it's about Demons - but demons before supernatural understood what they wanted demons to be, and also Dean is afraid of flying.

We start with a demon entering and then crashing a plane. I feel like media in the early 2000s was more careful about depicting destroying and crashing planes, but maybe that’s just me. It feels brave of supernatural to be showing a person actively making a plane crash. I suppose maybe that was more the immediate aftermath of 911 rather than in 2005, but I’m not researched enough to talk about this with any confidence.

We then get a very random full body shot of Dean sleeping. I feel like this type of shot is usually left for woman, while men get the objectifying shots of chests and muscles - the cameras are usually lingering on the one aspect of the man’s body they want to show off. Women are usually the objects of these long panning shots, but in Supernatural it’s Jensen that is gifted these objectifying panning shots and best believe I’ll point it out when I see it again.

I also feel generally uneasy about this start because until you know it’s Sam who walks into the room, it’s a very creepy scene. As a first time viewer it is laid out in a way that makes you feel uneasy about Dean’s safety - especially in the way they linger on him lying in bed, this is the most undressed we have seen Dean and thus the most physically vulnerable.

You get Dean in bed clearly undressed and also it focuses on his legs as an establishing shot.

The camera then pans up his body to his face, showing him with his eyes closed. It not a quick camera movement either, it takes its time.

You hear the door open and linger on Deans eyes opening.

A shadowy man walks through the door and stares through the glass seemingly at Dean - which is not a comforting shot.

Now substitute Dean with a random woman, if you didn’t get the uneasiness that I did, you should maybe understand now.

This doesn’t strike me as a scene meant to imply safety, and I am not implying that they want the watcher to not trust Sam, but until you see his face, it could be anyone and it’s just interesting framing, but Supernatural doesn’t always frame these boys in the stereotypical male way other shows might - exhibit A is the way they show off Dean lying in bed.

I want to make it clear that I am not saying Sam is a bad guy in this, nor am I implying that the show gives me the vibes that Sam is dodgy, if anything, seeing Sam come round the bend is actually a comfort.

Dean asks after Sam, he is making sure he’s okay. We hear that Sam hasn’t been sleeping, Dean makes it out like Sam not sleeping is bad because he’s meant to watch Deans back, but actually Dean is just worried about his brother and trying to pry in a way that doesn’t seem emotional. No chick flicks goddamn it!!

Sam says he’s still having nightmares about Jess and also that the job is getting to him. Dean makes it sound like the job doesn’t ever get to him, and Sam reaches under Deans pillow to pull out a knife, thus proving that the job does indeed get to him.

I like that we hear that after a few years away from hunting, getting back into it is messing with Sam a little bit, because it would - and it is a very alien mental place to have to stay in.

Then we get a phone call from someone asking for help - Winchesters Assemble!!!

The boys meet up with someone John and Dean had helped in the past, and get the rundown on the hunt.

While this is happening we gauge what John seemed like to others. This man - Jerry - said that John talked about Sam a lot, and Sam seemed surprised by that. While this could be an instance of Sam remembering childhood differently, I reckon it’s more likely that John was actually complementary of his children - or at least Sam when he went to college - but never to the boys faces because John is just kind of awful. But to others people, John has to look at least semi normal, so he boasts about his kids in a way he would never to them.

We hear a tape from the flight that went down and hear the drama and the boys begin their hunt.

Dean gets them the fake IDs they need, and they discover that the news is saying no one survived the plane crash, but the boys know seven people survived. They throw around ideas for what the monster could be, they never reference it being a demon which shows their inexperience with demons... boy how this will change. They immediately assume and guess ghost and haunted plane.

One of the survivors has checked himself into a mental health clinic, which fair enough, if I saw what he did and hadn’t seen supernatural, I’d probably do the same.

The boys go to see one of the survivors and speak to him, I love that they don’t try and assume he’s mad, nor do they disbelieve anything he says, they take it as fact and go along with it. Something like seeing a supernatural being would freak anyone out, and it would be easy to play it as ‘funny’ and try and make fun of someone who thinks they have mental health issues, but they don't, its played straight.

They continue their investigation with a lot of failing and confusion, nothing in this case is fitting with anything they have dealt with. Sam keeps saying ‘this doesn’t make sense’ as a transition and I find it very funny.

The boys finally, finally wear their suits.

And as a note to supernatural, trying to make it seems like Dean doesn’t look good in a suit or that he looks like a ‘seventh grader at his first dance’ is just a failure waiting to happen, Jensen doesn’t look bad in things, and as much as Dean may try and say different, he likes clothes and ‘dressing up’.

(I don’t mean dressing up in a sexual way nor in a belittling way, but I don’t love the implication that changing outfits for hunting and stuff is dubbed ‘dressing up’, also Dean just is fashionable. I mean have you seen the finale of the Winchesters, also some of the coats and suits the boys get in later seasons are just nice and they picked those out themselves).

Anyway… the boys go to the warehouse and look at the wreckage for more clues, some great fake fbi’ing from them. The set of the wreckage is very cool, good set dec and design on the episode.

We get an instance of Deans intelligence where he made an emf reader out of a Walkman, and that is impressive stuff and it takes knowledge and skill. But Sam is Sam, so he puts Dean down, which I kind of hate. Again we don’t need a smart brother and a dumb brother, they can both be intelligent. It makes Sam look bad as well and doesn’t endear him to me in the slightest.

For once the boys are caught out as being fake law enforcement but they get away.

We then see the demon possess someone else, and thank god the demon cgi gets better cause the smoke is way too pixilated.

We see that sulfur is all over everything and the educated among us know that means demons, but the boys… alas they are still sweet summer children and don’t know the implications.

We get the lore dump on demons and we get a nervous Dean who doesn’t really want to deal with demons saying ‘it’s not their usual gig’. It’s not the usual reaction for Dean to wish the monster was something else, which immediately raises the stakes of what a Demon is and how infrequently they are come across.

Dean wishes his dad was here, Sam agrees and then we get the phone call from Jerry where he tells them that his pilot friend died - which we saw a few minutes ago. I hate those tiny 2 seater planes, they freak me out a little bit and I’m not a nervous flyer.

So off the boys go to Nazareth 😂

They see that sulfer is again in this second crash, and that ‘get this’ the crashes happened 40 mins into the flight. We get some more of Dean intelligence when he mentions how the number 40 has biblical connotations - ‘It means Death’ and he puts together who the demon is going after.

We hear that Amanda is the only survivor left to get to and it seems like they are cutting it too close to reach her ‘even with Dean behind the wheel’. But Dean saves people and he feels the responsibility to save people so he steps on the gas and he will get there and they do get there.

Dean tries to get her away from the flight and messes up, but here is another example of him going with a lie into another lie after he is caught out. He is however unsuccessful and we get to discover another facet in the complexity of Dean Winchester.

Dean Winchester is afraid of flying.

Sam understands and immediately offers to go on his own, which is very nice. I like this from Sam, other than assuming Deans joking which… fair enough, he takes it very seriously and doesn’t make Dean fly.

Responsibility is however, a very big thing to Dean so he does get on the flight.

Dean humming Metallica is a mood, when I’m nervous I listen to music so I totally get it.

Sam reminds Dean that he needs to be focussed on the hunt which helps Dean to try and ignore his fear and concentrate on the job.

They talk about how to check if anyone’s a demon and mention using ‘Cristo’. WHICH IS NEVER USED AGAIN!!!!!! Make it make sense, but I suppose I do get it, using lube based holy water is much funnier - for those who don't know, prop water for tv is water based lube, there will definitely be gifs out there of all the times Jensen gets splashed with that stuff.

Dean talks to Amanda and falls into generally easy conversation, as Dean usually does. He’s slightly awkward with the whole cristo bit, but it’s okay.

Dean gets nervous at some turbulence and Sam tries to gently coax him into calming down, but that doesn’t work, so he adopts what I would assume is his ‘John Winchester voice’ and is a lot more firm about Dean calming down and reminds Dean that the more nervous he is the more likely he is to be possessed. The firmness works better with Dean… probably because he’s used to it from John.

There is a weird moment where this man just leers at Dean while he is walking up the aisle, which is weird and unnecessary and slightly uncomfortable. Just another example of Dean being objectified/sexualised in some way, interesting that they make a man leer at him, it doesn’t reflect on Dean in any way, but I suppose it’s meant to make it weirder or maybe in the early 2000s it’s meant to be funny - it doesn't feel funny.

The boys discover who the Demon is and immediately talk to Amanda to try and fix everything. They do the speech and try and get her on side, which they do.

She gets the demon out of the cockpit and they subdue him… kinda.

She leaves and Sam begins the first of many exorcisms we will hear in the long running story of Winchesters vs Demons in Supernatural.

The demon distracts Sam by mentioning that he knows what happens to Jess and gets away, the plane begins to plummet, but Sam recites the exorcism while Dean screams 😂 and all is good on the plane.

Sam mentions that it knows about Jess, Dean counters that by saying that demons lie, that’s just ‘what they do’.

John Winchester is a dick. I said what I said. And we have barely even got to many of the clear signs of being a terrible father yet.

We find out he’s changed his voicemail and if anyone has a problem to ‘phone his son Dean’. Sam is visibly upset by the fact that he’s changed his voicemail so is clearly alive, but hasn’t got in touch with his sons in any way. They both listen to the voicemail and then I’m silence, they get in the car and drive away.

Sam is obviously angry, whereas Dean just seems resigned to the fact that this is now happening, he’s being sent on jobs and it’s what he has to do. I like the choice to have the boys sit in the silence.

I’m flying to Amsterdam tomorrow so maybe I shouldn’t have watched this episode but I’m not a nervous flyer so it’s fine.

Generally it was a very good episode and a good way to end with more questions, but it's not an episode that I really ever have the want to rewatch.

"I know you’re just doing your job, but the police have been here all week already. I don’t see why we have to go through this again. The more he tells the story, the more he believes it’s true." Mrs McKay said to us as Sam, Dean and I were now posing as state policemen. We came here cause a man had gone missing under suspicious circumstances and that Mrs McKay's son had seen what happened.

"Mrs. McKay, we know you spoke with the local authorities." I said as we take off of our hats. "But, uh, this seems like a matter for the state police, so…." Dean said, shrugging. "Don’t worry about how crazy it sounds, Evan. You just tell us what you saw." Sam said to the young boy.

"I was up late, watching TV. When I heard this weird noise." Evan explained. "What did it sound like?" I asked him. "It sounded like….a monster." He replied and the boys and I exchange a look. "Tell the officers what you were watching on TV." Mrs McKay said to him. "Um...Godzilla Vs. Mothra." Evan said and Dean smiles.

"That’s my favorite Godzilla movie. It’s so much better than the original, huh?" Dean said to Evan, excitedly. "Totally." Evan said, smiling. "Yeah." Dean said then he nods towards Sam. "He likes the remake." Dean said. "Yuck!" Evan said, disgusted, while I shake my head and Sam glares at Dean and clears his throat at him.

"Evan, did you see what this thing was?" I asked him. "No. But I saw it grab Mr. Jenkins. It pulled him underneath the car." Evan said. "Then what?" Sam asked him. "It took him away. I heard the monster leaving. It made this really scary sound." Evan said.

"What did it sound like, Evan?" I asked him. "Like this…whining growl." He replied and Sam, Dean and I exchange another look. "Thanks for your time." Sam said to them and we walk out.

That night at Kugel’s Keg, Sam and I were having a beer at a table, doing  some research while Dean was throwing darts. "So, local police have now ruled out foul play. Apparently, there were signs of a struggle." Sam said. "Well, they could be right, it could just be a kidnapping. Maybe this isn’t our kind of gig." Dean said, shrugging. "Yeah, maybe not. Except for this—Dad marked the area, Dean." Sam said and Dean comes to the table and looks at their father’s journal. 

"Possible hunting grounds of a phantom attacker." Sam said. "Why would he even do that?" Dean asked. "Well, he found a lot of local folklore about a dark figure that comes out at night. Grabs people, then vanishes. He found this too—this county has more missing persons per capita than anywhere else in the state." I said. "That is weird." Dean mutters. "Yeah." Sam and I said.

"Don’t phantom attackers usually snatch people from their beds? Jenkins was taken from a parking lot." Dean said. "Well, there are all kinds. You know, Spring Heeled Jacks, phantom gassers. They take people anywhere, anytime. Look, guys, I don’t know if this is our kind of gig either." Sam said. "Yeah, you’re right, we should ask around more tomorrow." I said and Sam nods. "Right." He said as he takes out his wallet.

"I saw a motel about five miles back." He said and Dean holds a hand out. "Whoa, whoa, easy. Let’s have another round." He said to Sam. "We should get an early start." Sam said. "Ah, c'mon, Sammy." I pleaded. "Yeah, you really know how to have fun, don’t you, Grandma?" Dean asked and Sam smiles. 

"Alright, I’ll meet you guys outside, I gotta take a leak." Dean said and he grabs his coat and heads to the bathroom. Sam and I gather up his research then I turn to Sam. "I'm gonna use the bathroom too. Meet you outside." I said and Sam nods as I hand him his stuff and I head to the bathroom.

Minutes later, I walk out of the bar and see Dean by the car looking around, confused. "Dean?" I said as I walk up to him. "What's wrong?" I asked him. "Sam's not here. He left his stuff on the hood." Dean said. "He's not in the car?" I asked him and he shakes his head and begins to walk around the parking lot and I join him.

Then a group of people, who seem really drunk, come out of the bar and we walk up to them. "Hey, you guys been outside, around here in the last hour or so?" Dean asked them and they shake their heads and walk away.

"Sam!" I shout as we look around frantically. "Sammy!" Dean shouts as I turn around and notice a surveillance camera on top of a streetlight. Then Dean and I walk into the middle of the deserted road and look around as we said, with fear. "Sam." 

"So, what can we do for you and your partner, Officer Washington?" Deputy Kathleen asked us after she looked at our fake IDs. We thought maybe the local police could help us with Sam as we couldn't find him at all last night. We introduced ourselves as Officer Greg Washington and Officer Joan Miller.

"We're working a missing persons." Dean replied. "I didn’t know the Jenkins case was being covered by the state police." Kathleen said to us. "Oh, no. No, there’s someone else." I said.

"Actually, it’s my cousin. We were havin’ a few last night at this bar down by the highway. And we haven’t seen him since." Dean said. "Does your cousin have a drinking problem?" She asked us. "Sam? Two beers and he’s doin’ karaoke." I said, jokingly, and she smiles. "No, he wasn’t drunk. He was taken." I said. Kathleen nods and sits down at her computer. Dean and I follow her and sit across from her.

"Alright. What’s his name?" She asked. "Winchester. Sam Winchester." Dean replied and she looks up at us. "Like the rifle?" She asked. "Like the rifle." We said in unison. She types Sam’s name in the computer and brings up his police record.

She observes the page, then clicks on something and reads whatever popped on her computer. "Samuel Winchester. So, you two know that his brother, Dean Winchester, died in St. Louis. And, uh, was suspected of murder." She said as she looks up at us. I glance over at Dean as he tries to look nonchalant.

"Yeah, Dean. Kind of the black sheep of the family. Handsome, though." Dean said and I rolled my eyes. "Debatable." I said and Dean narrows his eyes at me and I give a smirk then stuck my tongue out at him as Kathleen types something else on the computer. "Well, he’s not showing up in any current field reports." She said. "Oh, we already have a lead. Joan, here, saw a surveillance camera by the highway." Dean said as he gestures to me.

"Uh-huh. The county traffic cam?" She asked. "Right. Yeah. We were thinking the camera picked up whatever took him. Or, whoever." I said. "Well, I have access to the traffic cam footage down at the county works department, but—well, anyhow, let’s do this the right way." Kathleen said and she stands up and gets some paperwork from a filing cabinet.

 "Why don’t you fill out a missing persons report and sit tight over here?" She said as she hands Dean a clipboard.

"Officer, look, uh, he’s family. I kind of—I kind of look out for the kid. You gotta let us go with you." Dean pleads. "I’m sorry, I can’t do that." She said and she starts to turn away. "Well, tell me something." I said and she turns to me. "Your county has its fair share of missing persons. Any of ‘em come back?" I asked her and she gives me a sad look.

"Sam’s our responsibility. And he’s comin’ back. We're bringin’ him back." Dean said and she stares at us.

Later, we were sitting on a bench outside as Dean's leg bounced a bit. "Hey..." I said to him as I placed a hand on his shoulder. He looks over at me and I could tell he had a worried look on his face. "We'll find him." I assured him and he nods just as Kathleen comes up, holding some printouts.

"Greg. Joan." She calls out and we stands up. "I think we’ve got something." She said and she hands us the printouts and we look through them. "These traffic cams take an image every three seconds, as part of the Amber Alert program. These images were all taken around the time that your cousin, Sam, disappeared." She said as we see just a bunch of pictures of either empty roads or some passing cars

"This really isn’t what we're looking for." Dean said as he flips through the pictures and I look over at the. "Just wait, wait���next one." Kathleen said and Dean turns the page and we see an image of a rusty truck driving. "This one was taken right after Sam left the bar. Look at the back end of that thing." She said and we do and see the license plates. 

"Now, look at the plates." She said and he turns another page and we see a close-up image of the truck’s license plates. "Oh, the plates look new. It’s probably stolen." I said and Kathleen nods. "So, whoever’s driving that rust bucket must be involved." She said just as we hear a whining noise.

Dean and I turned around and see a beat-up van driving by. "Hear that engine?" Dean asked. "Yeah." Kathleen said as I nod and watch the old van. "Kind of a whining growl, isn’t it?" I asked. "Sure." She said as Dean and I stare at the van as it drives away. "I’ll be damned." I hear Dean mutter then he and I exchange a look.

"Okay, the next traffic cam is fifty miles from here, and the pickup didn’t pass that one, so…." Kathleen said as she drives her cop car and Dean sits in the front seat and I sit in the back. "So, it must’ve pulled off somewhere. I didn’t see any other roads here." I said and Dean nods. "Yeah, neither did I." He said. "Well, a lot of these backwoods properties have their own private roads." She said and Dean sighs at this. "Great." I said, annoyed, as I stare out the window. 

We sat there in silence for a few moments until Kathleen speaks up. "So, guys." She said and Dean and I turn to look at her. "Yeah?" We said. "I ran both of your badge numbers. It’s routine when we’re working a case with state police. For accounting purposes and what have you." She said and I started to bite my lips.

"Mmhmm." Dean hums. "And, uh, they just got back to me." She said and she pulls the car over to the side of the road. "It says here both of your badges were stolen." She said and we look at her surprised.

"And there’s a picture of you." She said as she turns the computer to Dean, where we see a picture of a heavy African-American man.

"And there's a picture of you too." She said and she shows me a picture of an old woman with grey hair. "I lost some weight. And I got that Michael Jackson skin disease." Dean chuckles. "And I dyed my hair and use lots of make-up." I explain as she takes off her seatbelt.

"Okay, would you two step out of the car, please?" She asked us. "Look, look, look." Dean and I said and she stops. "If you wanna arrest us, that’s fine. We’ll cooperate, I swear. But, first, please—let us find Sam." Dean pleads to her. "I don’t even know who you two are. Or if this Sam person is missing." She said. "Look into our eyes and tell us if we're lying about this." I said and she scoffs as she looks between us 

"Identity theft? Both of you are impersonating a couple of officers." She exclaims. "Look, here’s the thing. When we were young, I pretty much pulled him from a fire. And ever since then, I’ve felt responsible for him. Like it’s my job to keep him safe. And she's been helping me in anyway she can. I’m just afraid if we don’t find him fast—" Dean said as his voice breaks. "Please....He’s our family." I plead to her.

"I’m sorry. You two have given me no choice. I have to take both of you in." She said then she glances at her visor. I look at it and see a photo of her and another man, smiling. She looks at it then sighs.

"After we find Sam Winchester." She said as she fastens her seatbelt. Dean looks at her, confused, then to me and I shrug at him as we begin to drive off.
