I am in love with the acting here, because you just see how heartbroken he is for her, he doesn't wanna leave her but he is so so afraid. "Then what are you so afraid of" and you can just see his heart drop slightly because why the hell would she ask that, and then she says Maria told me about Sarah, and his heart completely drops. Persumably he hasn't talked about her in 20 years, and he doesn't wanna dig up that grief he hasn't allowed himself to feel, not when it's so close to the surface.

You can see how he really doesn't wanna talk about it, it's a desperate head shake, don't make me do this, don't ask me about her...it's that broken grief compared to game Joel who's grief made him harden, show Joels grief broke him.

Then he gets pissed off, because how dare this kid say she lost people too, he lost his child, the light of his life. The loss of a child can never be compared, and he has that quite rage of game joel in his eyes there, that terrifying rage.
