one of the things about where are your boys tonight i really appreciated and, to me, seemed like the most significant thrust of the book (but never garnered much attention, imo), was the focus on the business side of things and particularly the way the many bands never saw long term success or stability or the way a lot of very young people were taken advantage of even after making their labels and handlers metric butt-tones of money and this really culminated with the discussion about paramores record deal and the inherently coercive nature of making a 14 year old sign a record deal (not even really mentioning that record deal was 20 fucking years lmao) and yet i still see people argue she was an industry plant or whatever. sorry ig one of my fatal flaws is i give child stars the benefit of the doubt considering the fundamental exploitation necessary for that position to exist or whatever
#sorry was thinking about this bc I saw some truly horrible and dismissive posts on twitter about hayleys contract#but i also think it dovetails into the general malaise that existed in the third wave that a lot of places are quick to dismiss#idk. i keep thinking about how so many ppl were taken advantage of (in the sense of predatory contracts or not getting paid victory style)#and how many are stuck in an endless loop of diminishing returns in order to be career musicians who can actually support themselves#and fundamentally this is the key linchpin in the emo nostalgia- some of the btier andlower bands Need stuff like#emo nites or wwwy to actually make a living (no matter how much you make up front a altrock hit single cannot sustain someone as livelihood)#and since touring is the only reliable way to make money. well why put significant expenses into ur new album#none of your fans care about anyway? its a pre-existing cycle. very thrash metal. but its almost worse#when you factor in shit like the fan perception of the used the canyon....#idk ive been thinking about it a lot and i dont find nostalgia circuits reprehensible bc of the fundamental indignities#of the recording industry and all its issues#but its hard to see people shit talk the third wave for being full of impressionable kids hoping to survive of their passion#like you do realize they dont sound like assholes in that circumstance for crashing and burning? right?#(esp when you add mental health and addiction into the mix- these bands were full of sick people being denied care bc it would interfere w/#the 'rawness' or authenticity or whatever the fuck. these bands were having their sadness wrung out of them for money)#anyway i think hayley williams should be allowed to hunt any and all current or former atlantic higherups for sport#my posts

my not so new fallout ocs!!! yuppieee
the girl's name is june, she's a radio operator and sort of an apprentice to ronald curtis. she's very cheerful and kind, but does her job very well. june never actually been to an actual active warzone, she joined maccaran just a year before the second battle for hoover dam and in this short time made a name for herself as an excellent technicial and an amazing person who can always raise the spirits of men, even in the darkest of times :)

thomas, on the other hand, is a wreck. he joined the ncr at the age of 17 and been tirelessly serving the cause ever since. he's an amazing commander, great soldier and a wonderful father. all in all, after openly criticising general lee's war tactics, the bitter springs and the boulder city bombing (where he lost his daughter) major williams was gently displaced, honorably discharged and put in a "military advisor" position with the worst wage possible. it didn't help the fact that rumors starting to spead about thomas' little brother being a high rank legionary so yeah! also no healthcare, the prosthetics were made by his sister, a follower of the apocalypse. he resides in maccaran as of now, with no money to afford himself living quarters, being the black sheep and burden to most people in camp. except his old friend james hsu and an impressionable young woman june slivovitz.

Laughing Jack Headcanons (Rewritten)
I said before that I wanted to rewrite my headcanons for the characters because I don’t like the format or what I have written for them currently, so I decided what better way to end the year than with newly written headcanons for the Creeps, starting with the main clown himself?

Appearance:
Jack has pale, ashen grey skin. Its texture is felt-like, like a doll. His hair is raven black and straight, but very messy. It sticks out all over the place but has a greasy texture from lack of care.
His eyes are icy blue, and stand out against his monochrome palette. They’re the only pop of color on his being after he loses all his colors.
Of course, Jack is the tallest of the group, standing at a whopping height of 8’5. He loves to rub it in and use his height as a weapon against others.
He is very lanky and his body resembles that of a raggedy Anne doll in my mind. He’s filled with a soft cotton stuffing and has no internal organs or genitalia. He’s soft to the touch and even though he isn’t exactly alive he’s warm. His cone nose and long claws are solid and very sharp though.
Backstory/Life:
Similarly to the original story, Jack was created by a guardian angel to befriend Isaac and keep him safe. The two of them had a brotherly bond and were very close before Isaac was sent away.
When Jack witnessed Isaac killing for the first time, he was still very impressionable and naive. He truly thought it was just some sort of new game Isaac wanted to play, so when he was released from his box and he killed Isaac, not knowing what was happening in the moment but in the aftermath finally understanding he had just murdered his best friend, he had a complete breakdown.
He understands that Isaac didn’t mean to abandon him. Isaac was sent away against his will, and eventually grew up. He has unending guilt for killing Isaac, so when he found William he believed that taking care of him was a way he could make up for what he did. He loves Will like his own son and is very protective of him.
Personality/Other Facts:
Jack can be bipolar. There are moments where he’s buoyant and bubbly, others he’s bereft monotonous. It just depends on what’s going on in that complex mind of his at the time. He can be a bastard and a bit of a jerk sometimes and can accidentally take things too far.
He steals people’s things to piss them off. Not anything super important, and he always gives it back after a short while of teasing. If there’s something that Will doesn’t want him touching, he’ll respect that. He’ll also hold people’s belongings over their heads where they can’t reach it.
Makes a lot of ridiculous jokes, some that don’t even make sense, and does the stupidest and randomest shit just to get reactions out of the people around him. He can be terribly loud and has no sense of noise whatsoever.
He’s a bastard to everyone, especially Frankie, but Will is the exception. He loves Will like a son and does everything in his power to make sure he’s taken care of and knows how much he’s cared for.
He’s fiercely protective of the people close to him, but specifically Will. He isn’t afraid to slap (or maim) the fuck out of anyone insulting his people.
His favorite food is Oreos! Just thinks they’re tasty.
He’s also fiercely protective of children. He was created for kids and still harbors a strong bond with them, but his way of punishing parents who don’t treat them well border over extreme.
He’s asexual. Romantically, he doesn’t know what he is. He just wants love and that’s all he knows.
His birthdate is December 24th, 1854.
He knows all the clown tricks and will perform them if he sees one of his people is sad. He’ll do anything to make sure the ones he cares about are happy.
His music taste is all over the place. He’s been around for a long time and has been through many decades, so he’s picked up a lot of things over his existence. From classical of the Victorian era to 30s jazz, 70s funk and pink girly pop, he loves it all. He’ll listen to everything but some days, depending on how he’s feeling, he’ll only listen to one genre. One day Will came home to Jack just sitting on the sofa like a gargoyle with sad classical playing in the background and it scared him a little bit.

Art Nouveau appears at the end of the 19th century and spreads widely across Europe and the United States. It draws inspiration from the Japanese, Oriental, Byzantine and Celtic arts as well as Impressionism.                                                      The peculiarities of the style are highlighted decoration and strong interest in the ornament and curve line. Stylised floral motifs and human images combined with asymmetric compositions are used. The emotional suggestions that are inherent in style are: refinement, elegancy, spirituality, variability, expressiveness, romance, love, tenderness, nostalgia, dreaminess.

Origin of Art Nouveau. 
On the one hand, it is the English Arts and Crafts movement from the middle of the nineteenth century and headed by William Morris. The basis of this movement is Morris's idea of affirming the value of handmade handicrafts against the industrial products. His followers replace cheap mass production with quality handmade items. They stem from the beauty of natural forms, the tradition of old medieval styles and folklore.
On the other hand, the ideas of Art Nouveau are also based on the works of Augustus Pugin, who seeks reforming society through the plastic forms of Gothic, which he considers to be the bearer of Christian values.The artists and designers of the 1990s developed the ideas of Puigin and Morris and enriched them with new forms and materials. This also determines the aesthetic basis of the new style. The materials used for everyday use are very high quality.
It has been assumed that all forms of plastic visualisation are equally valuable (until this moment it is believed that such activities are under the artist's dignity.) 
The essence of Art Nouveau is that the art shape is particularly important, it is even more important than the content and even the most prosaic content can be represented in a highly artistic shape.
Another important aesthetic feature is the appearance of the female figure. Portraits of women are common in this style. The most common image is just a woman as a center of composition, in the way that the figure is an integral part of the ornament in the whole.

The art of posters is also developing in Paris.The emblem of this art becomes Alphonse Mucha. He designs theatrical posters and settings, but also made designs multiple packaging and patterns for mass consumption. Frequently used in them are stylised images of women whose long hair has been turned into complex decorative ornaments.

Like many of his peers Toulouse Lautrec follows the principles of Japanese engraving, which is based on the flat construction of the shapes, the exaggerated facial expressions and the strong theatrical compositions. The objects of his inspiration are dancers, actresses, singers, courtesans. He works a lot in the field of poster and advertising, raising this genre to the level of real art.

Gustav Klimt is the leading figure of the Vienna Secession. His works are very decorative and filled with erotism. Again, the woman is his main inspiration and is elevated to a cult.

In conclusion, Art Nouveau is one of the last attempts to create a common style in plastic arts, architecture, interior and furniture design, poster, book design, and more.

The aim of the architect, the artist, the designer is the creation of a synthetically complete work of art that enters the private life of man through the items that surrounds him. That's why this style is cosmopolitan.
As far as Art Nouveau artists and designers are concerned, it can be said that they develop and enrich the ideas of Pugin and Morris, and because of everything listed above we can define their work as a top-class art.

There are no 'Evil Beings' in this Universe, despite what we were taught as children.
There are no devils, demons or malevolent spirits, no matter what the fear-based religions preach, and despite the striking images and ideas that myths, fairy tales, novels and movies imprint in our young, impressionable minds.
There are no monsters under the bed. No supernatural creatures out to get us.
There are only people - people who do bad things. Abusive things. Manipulative things. Violent things. Narcissistic things, yes. Things that hurt and scare us.
There are only people - people who forget they are people, people who take out their unprocessed rage, shame, guilt, grief and anxiety on other people.
And we call this behaviour ‘evil’.
But it has no supernatural source. Its source lies deep within our nature. Or rather, within a misunderstanding of our nature. Within ‘sin’, which is the imagined separation from our true loving nature.
There are people on this planet who are certain that their vision and version of reality is singularly correct, and who are unwilling to open up to possibility, to meet others in vulnerable intimacy and joyful doubt.
And from that narcissistic place, they hurt, manipulate, control and even kill others, because they are deeply traumatised, and they do not know love, and they are unwilling to stay close to their raw experience, and do the hard work of healing.
They are not ‘possessed’. They are unconscious, fragmented, and uneducated about the true nature of love, rather than inherently ‘evil’.
Instead of sitting with their pain, disappointment, anger, fear, critical thoughts, instead of making a loving home for these energies, these discomforts, these tensions, these ancestral wounds, they turn to the external world for relief, and blame others for their unhappiness, and seek to destroy the imagined 'external source' of their misery.
Instead of taking full responsibility for their own unmetabolised feelings, and their own profound longings for love, they become unloving towards others.
To hide their own ‘evil’, they may even call others ‘evil’.
They scapegoat. Project ‘evil’ onto an innocent goat (victim) and slaughter it and feel some relief for a while. This is their addiction.
'Evil' is tunnel vision, then. It is a painful constriction and rejection of the flowing wholeness of life, a forgetting of our true nature as vastness and divine capacity, which is the absence of a separate and solid 'self'. It is a fearful holding-on to stories and opinions rather than an expansive letting-go into the liberated ocean of consciousness.
There are no 'evil people'. But there are those who live in fear of life and who act out of that fear.
Evil is simply 'live', backwards. It is backwards living.
It is a lost innocence, a cosmic ignorance, a fall from the Grace of self-knowledge.
There is no dark force out there, no malevolent energy or all-powerful Creature opposing Love, for Love is the only Power. But there is the forgetting of Love, the unwillingness to sit with the sacred body and its discomforts. There is the Self-Abandonment Project, and all the unconscious behaviours that emanate from that sad and lonely - and often hellish - place.
This recognition - that nobody is truly 'evil', but only disconnected from Source, from Love, from Mother - is the beginning of great understanding and maybe ultimately even compassion for those who we rush to judge and label as 'evil'.
Behind every 'evil' act, there is a very human story.
And no, this is not to condone or justify violence - there cannot be any place for violence in conscious, civilised society - but to try to understand its very human, rather than supernatural, source.
In that sense, then, we all contain the potential for 'evil'.
And so, we must all take a good hard look at ourselves:
Where does violence live within me?
How am I adding to the violence of the world?
How am I disconnecting from Source?
Can I be a little kinder to myself and others today? Soften, where I usually contract? Breathe, where I usually suffocate? Slow down, where I usually speed up?
Can I take responsibility, where I usually blame others?
Can I be accountable, where I usually scapegoat and project my own faults onto others?
The end of evil lies here in Presence, in our collective willingness to breathe love into our own pain, to drench the sore places with Light, to wake up to our loving nature, moment by precious moment.
To stop blaming, and start healing, and listening to each other.
To remember the divine light within each and every one of us.
All dark shadows require a light source; they are never more powerful than light, having no power of their own.
Evil, then, is a distorted plea for love, for help, for understanding, for more light. It is a longing for the womb.
It would cry, if it could, “Please, I’m hurting, I want to hurt others, help me!!!”

As usual: great chapter!! Loren and William’s chemistry is so well written and amazing! I want that energy in any relationship with a man now. It’s so sexual but like intimate and light and fluffy. Like just him kissing her shoulders when they reunite at the end of the night made me feel all giddy, and then her just wanting to be with him in a corner of a club, just cause she likes him.
Excited for the Paris trip and let’s hope Margot doesn’t embarrass herself too much. Like even if she’s probably a bit superficial and all, having a crush on guy (even if it’s also a surface level type of crush) and then you end up sleeping with him, but that night is the catalyst for him to realize that he’s still wants and needs this other girl (and he thinks of her while you are both fucking); that’s so embarrassing 😳 I would be mortified…
But at the same time, William never lead her to believe that they were more than a one night stand, and if it was agreed on, like can’t blame him. And he made pretty clear not just verbally, but his actions during that moment were detached, no intimacy, and purely primal/sexual…But I can’t blame Margot for being delusional and surely Isla hyping her up and William did not help!
Anyhow, you are great and thanks for providing us with a great story that just keeps growing and growing. Hope you don’t get tired of Loren and William even after this story. The way you write about feeling and intimacy is really well done: I have read your other William AU with singer reader, and it’s also really well done!

This is such an amazingly thoughtful note, Nonnie - I am not even sure I know where to begin. I just really appreciate knowing that the emotion is being felt (I am a very emotion-based person lol). You've brought up some really excellent points regarding Margot. She originally in my mind was only meant to be that catalyst to make William realize how much he was truly longing for Loren - she did her part and then I didn't really give her much thought beyond that. But then, I began to realize that she's young and maybe a bit impressionable - and she slept with William...so it's likely that she would have a lot of residual feelings from that, despite knowing deep down, she's not the one for him. Isla is sort of someone that is a bit careless with people's feelings so absolutely, her trying to orchestrate things between William and Margot was not helpful. It's was a last minute thought to have her watching him and Loren in the club, as it will lend itself to a very crucial moment later on.
I not entirely sure what I'm going to do once the Loren and William story ends. I have a lot of ideas for actual short blurbs (no mammoth 11k parts but actual short stories - I think I can do it 😆) - but sometimes it seems that the fics are sort of low-key flops, just in terms of interactions. They're just not hugely popular - and I'm ok with that - but I do put a ton of time into these (especially when I should be doing other things, but that's on me) and I was honestly weighing out whether I would keep writing on here or not.
But this - your note makes me think differently, and I am so thankful that you take the time to write in with your thoughts. The William x singer lived in my head for so long prior to ever finding Tumblr - I would love to get back to her someday.

”I think it had more to do with the fact he was never held accountable for anything in his entire life.” He’s also incredibly impressionable so absorbs the traits of those around him. If he’s with people who are a positive influence on him, he seems happier and well-adjusted. I think that’s why Hero Harry worked because he was listening to ELF and had some purpose. That was the height of his popularity. While Hero Harry was ELF’s creation, Harry did have to play the part and sell it, which he did for the most part. However, if Harry is around negative influences then well we’re seeing that now. I’m not saying he isn’t responsible for his actions because he absolutely is and is clearly making these choices. He just may not understand how impressionable he is by the people around him.
This is very true.
He was spending more time on his patronages and working with William and Catherine on their foundation work.
He was also seeing a therapist after William convinced him to go to therapy.
It is said that Meghan had Harry quit this therapist before they got married.

Another Long Running OC - Meet Ludwig Ungerer!
Don't worry - ARTHUR ISN'T DISAPPEARING! But Arthur, while cool and also rad, isn't the only typa guy I wanna write about!
Normally when I write about OCs they're either Arthur Keane or they die within minutes of their introduction. I wanted to break that pattern a little bit, though, and see what I could do with a SECOND guy running around!
Is he like Arthur? Soft spoken, simple tradesman with a heart of gold and looks to match?
no.
This new guy is a very serious composer. In the 20s.
BACKGROUND
Ludwig Maria Ungerer was born in Alsace on December 7th, 1904. He was the youngest of 6, and was raised by a family of church musicians and organ tuners.
Suffice to say, much like Arthur Keane, music was with him at an early age - but not with strings.
Quickly becoming somewhat of a virtuoso when it came to keyboard instruments, Ludwig eventually started to attend schools specifically meant for music. When his family came to America around his 12th birthday, he started studying with the finest musicians in the city, and even spending time in New York. His family wasn't well off - this cost a lot of money.
His siblings resent him for this.
PRESENT DAY
Ludwig currently attends the same college as Ivy, and is obtaining his masters in composition. He has become very interested in serialism, but has always leaned more towards impressionism and post-tonal styles in his work - think a mixture of Vaughan Williams and Mahler, with little Webern-esque experiments on the side. He even experiments some with Indeterminate music - hear that John Cage? He sorta beat you to it! (But not really)
To make ends meet, he works as a copyist during the day and a part time conductor - he has a knack for running rehearsals. He also helps with charts for the band at the Daisy. He's friends with Ivy and owes her the favor.
He lives in a small apartment owned by Bapka. He's in there often - you can hear piano, scribbling, and German swear words leaking from it most days.
HOW'S THE FELLA LOOK?
Ludwig is a German Rex, with the same fur color as Ivy. He's tall, lanky, and has big, beady green eyes. He looks like something out of an expressionist film. He has a deep, quiet voice, and a thick accent.
He does wear glasses - round ones, that only serve to make him look slightly more frightening.
He's unusual in how he dresses, as well - he often wears turtleneck sweaters, and when it's too warm, long or even short sleeved Henleys. In public. In the 1920s, that's at least a tad eccentric.
LUDWIG AND THE GANG
One thing that Ludwig has going for him is his relationship with the Daisy. It's genuinely a good one! He even managed to find them a beer supplier!
Despite his rather awkward and stilted nature, he tends to get along with the Daisy folks just fine. He's intimidating at first, but he really does try to be friendly, even if he accidentally scares people. A lot.
LUDWIG AND LOVE
I have more than one idea for Ludwig shipping wise, but they're a bit far out and would require a lot of planning. He's not going after Lacy, Lacy is Arthur's! But I do eventually want him to end up with...someone. Not sure who, though.

oh i like this!! i want to add some:
the eerie quality of henri de toulouse-lautrec's work (at least imo) feels like it'd be appealing to hoffman. along the same vein, i'd say edvard munch too. ALSO FRANCISCO GOYA. im surprised he wasn’t also painting fucked up shit on his own walls.
amanda would love louise bourgeois, ana mendieta, joan mitchell, and eva hesse. i feel like she'd also be really into fiber arts in general (tamara kostianovsky, kiki smith, raija jokinen). also we know she likes some renaissance/stylistically classical art bc she has the birth of venus print next to her bed in saw 3! i think this is more for gay reasons but i bet she'd like john william waterhouse’s mythological paintings.
i love this one for john! the obvious one for him would be da vinci as well- john's drawings actually remind me a lot of his. i think he wouldn't be into abstraction because “it lacks intellect” or some shit. probably dark, dramatic, pensive baroque art.
i feel like lawrence would be into impressionism but NOT post impressionism!!! he'd be so annoying about it. monet, degas, cassat, etc. i also think he'd enjoy botanical illustrations. probably a fan of edward hopper too.
adam would like jc leyendecker. just based on vibes. others i think he'd enjoy include john singer sargent, norman lewis, lee krasner, yoshitaka amano, salman toor, yayoi kusama... these are all over the place uhhhh i just think he'd enjoy a wide range of styles. now ofc he has favorite photographers, but that is not at all my area of study and the only one i could think of off the top of my head that would fit him is robert mapplethorpe.
for lynn, andrew wyeth makes sense to me- the lonely, empty, desolate feeling his paintings give you would probably speak to her :( agnes martin (ESPECIALLY agnes martin) and louise nevelson would probably appeal to her too.
strahm liking caravaggio is basically canon to me. like of fucking course. for one, he'd just loooove telling people that the Old Master painters are the finest of fine artists just bc he's a dick (and doesn't know shit about art made after like the 18th century). but also caravaggio was gay and killed someone and was murdered so. it fits. he'd probably scoff at rene magritte paintings but deep down he'd really enjoy them.
im obsessed with this ask and i've been drafting this response for a hot minute bc i wanted to put some real thought into it. VERY fun and a great way to procrastinate on work as an art history grad student

The To Do List (2013) centers on a recent high school grad Brandy Klark (played by Aubrey Plaza) who wants to lose her virginity before going to college. In order to make this goal happen, she makes a “to-do list” of all the sexual acts she wants to engage in. The To Do List is the epitome of a sex-comedy similar to popular American films like American Pie or Superbad, but it also parodies the genre. Most of Brandy’s sexual experiences turn out to be awkward or disappointing, and her strong and dorky personality only adds to the situational humor. 
In Linda Williams’ article Film Bodies: Gender, Genre and Excess, she writes about sex and bodies in film, and how gendered filmmaking affects how we view female roles in films. The To Do List, directed by a woman (Maggie Carey), actually combats a lot of the problems of female roles in comedy movies. The movie is a sex comedy, so most of the sexual acts end in some sort of humor. William writes in her article that physical clown comedy is a form of body genre, but “it has not been deemed gratuitously excessive” because impressionable audiences don’t feel like they have to mimic the characters’ actions. This means that in some “body genres,” or films where they show sex or human bodies, there is some human desire for audiences to mimic what they see on screen (for example: trying to mimic a scene from a “sexy” movie). But, when the sexual acts become undesirable (for example: in one scene Brandy performs oral sex on a man in the shower but then gets his hairdye in her mouth), it destigmatizes the sexual acts and makes them something relatable and funny instead of a desirable intimate moment.

Williams writes, “the image of a sexually ecstatic woman [is] so important to the [pornography] genre [because it] is a celebration of female victimization and a prelude to female victimization in real life.” In The To Do List, a woman with a sexual desire is an empowered woman. While her quest does begin with feeling left out from being inexperienced, her ultimate journey helps her realize that sexual acts don’t make her any more or less of a woman. In an interview with writer/director Maggie Carey, she said that she wanted to make a movie about sex from a girl’s perspective, showing that sex can be fun but also very confusing and uncomfortable for a teenage girl. She said she drew on her own and her friends’ experiences as young girls because she wanted to represent this common experience.

Would you consider a film like this to be “feminist”? (keep in mind everyone has a different definition of feminism!)
Do you think Carey making “sex” part of the humor of the film destigmatized it? 
 Do you think showcasing casual female sexuality in film is empowering or the opposite?
Another interesting thing about the movie is she doesn’t really sexualize any characters. When sexual acts occur in the film, a lot is left up to the imagination and barely any nudity is shown. Do you think this actually is helpful?

4. What art work or artist got you interested in art history? In early high school I loved William Adolphe Bourguereau because there was a really intricate painting at the Detroit institute of Art & I was so interested in how he was able to paint hair specifically it was so fine. But very shortly after that I learned about impressionism and had some favorite artists immediately were Morisot & Degas (I also liked Renoir but later really came to dislike his work) I really liked that whole romantic victorian/edwardian aesthetic in high school & that definitely was apparent in what started my interest in art history.

Best Man Speech (6th September 2005)
Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. I would first like to thank you all for coming today and helping to make Paul and Becky’s wedding such a memorable and special occasion. Personally, I wish you'd all stayed at home and made my job less nerve wracking.
To put my nerves about speaking here today into perspective, this is the 5th time this afternoon that I have risen from a warm seat with a piece of paper in my hand!
At the bride's request, yesterday Paul and I paid a visit to the barbers … me for a haircut, Paul for a chat Paul was my best man too many years ago and he did a wonderful job. However Paul, there are many reasons why you should get married and I’m not sure if revenge is one of them.
I believe Paul chose me because after all the lurid, depraved and immoral things he got up to as a teenager he was eager to appoint someone with tact, rather than someone who would tell the truth But, it is a great thrill and honour, and Paul’s already agreed that I can do it again next time!
When it came to writing this speech I wasn’t short of material. Although most of it I’ve had to edit, throw away, or burn. So this is what’s left.
Obviously, this is a pivotal moment in the speech where I am meant – in good taste – to put the groom down. So, minus the good taste, I'll proceed. There are some stories you can tell at a wedding and then there are others that might be interesting to tell, but can't really be told. The ones that Paul invented about himself for the Reader's Letters section of Penthouse magazine would be a perfect example.
I really should grasp this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reveal to you all Paul's past misdemeanours. Unfortunately, I have played a part in most of these incriminating events, and I really don't want to tarnish my impeccable reputation.
So instead, I'll keep things very short by talking about Paul's achievements Paul and I have known each other a long time, close to 30 years. We met at Highbury Technical College near Portsmouth and we have been friends ever since.
So, for those of you on Becky's side who are just getting to know Paul, here is some advice. Never let him date a member of your family. My first impression of Paul was a guy with a really distinctive sense of fashion style and, being impressionable, I started to copy him in the sorts of things he used to wear - until my mother grounded me for taking clothes from her wardrobe
You could say we’ve been like brothers in some ways. I watched him drink from a bottle, I watched him stagger around naked, I watched him crawl, I've dressed and undressed him, cleaned up after him and that was only last night!
One of my duties was to get Paul to the registry office on time. Not an easy task, particularly since Becky's nickname for Paul is 'Everlast' - not for his bedroom skills, but for his time keeping. We have GMT, we have BST, but is anyone here familiar with PWT? Well, Paul Williams Time runs about 40 minutes behind either GMT or BST. But despite this, I suppose he does have a knack for being in the right place at the right time - if he didn't, he wouldn't have met Becky who I must say looks absolutely stunning today.
Becky, I don't feel I can stand up here and commit you to married bliss without offering you this one crucial piece of guidance for the years ahead - the remote control is Paul's, and Paul's alone! Paul, she’s a lovely person and deserves a good husband, so make sure you are. You have really scored in marrying Becky. You’ve found someone who is attractive, funny, smart, loving and caring. And Becky, you have found … well, you have found Paul. But seriously, I think you’ve made a wonderful choice for your first husband.
To bring things to a conclusion, I'd like to thank you all for your attention. And let me just say that if you've enjoyed listening to this speech as much as I've enjoyed making it, then all I can do is offer my sincere apologies. Thank you
There remains just one more task for me There are obviously two very important people here today, without whom very little of this would have been possible. And the great thing is that as the evening progresses, most of us will get to spend more and more time talking with them. So please join me in a very special toast – to the bar staff!
I'd like you all to join me in wishing Paul and Becky the very best for their future journey together. And I hope, when they look back years from now on this, their wedding day, they realise it was the day that they loved each other the least
