Victorian Color Printing

These color wood-engraved images come from Victorian Colour Printing by British print historian Geoffrey Wakeman (1926-1987), printed in 1981 at his Plough Press in Loughborough, Leicestershire in an edition of 150 copies.

The first print, "Latimer Presenting the Bible to Henry VIII," was printed by the British printing firm Leighton Brothers sometime after 1866. It used a wood-engraved outline block and several transparent tint blocks.

The next print is from Wild Flowers by English botanical illustrator Ann Pratt (1806-1893) printed in 1853 by William Dickes (1815-1892) with tint woodblocks only, and no outline block.

The last print is from Picturesque Views of Seats of Noblemen & Gentlemen, 1864-1880, with wood-engraved color prints by Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893). Fawcett used an outline block and in the color blocks, had a tendency to overprint the colors in fairly heavy inks, which gives the effect of brilliance to his prints.

The series below shows the color separations for the frontispiece to a later edition of C. J. Apperley's The Life of John Mytton published by George Routledge & Sons about 1870. Each block is marked with the color to be printed: red, blue, pink (indicated on the block as "flesh"), grey, and yellow (which is printed here in black for clarity). These proofs were printed on an 1875 Albion press, roughly contemporaneous with the blocks.

The blocks all have a backing material pasted on the back, as shown on the center block in the photograph below. Some of these materials are waste prints from works by Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane, and may have come through the workshop of Edmund Evans (1826-1805), a wood engraver and color printer famous for his printings of works by Caldecott, Crane, and Kate Greenaway. These blocks may have originated in his shop.
