Unit 4 Reflective Journal - Lim Lin Year 1 Production Arts for Screen (WEEK 6-10, Creative Research)
Continuing from the previous post, I appended the flowers modelled by Jin into the scene and tried drawing a cloud using a Ghibli film still as reference, however the result of the clouds did not turn out well due to the shadows casted by the tree.

Week 6
After the Easter break, we showed the tutors the current progress of our project. Franciska was able to edit the animatic with sound effects and the result was shared. The main issue the tutors had was the timing of the shots and certain camera angles. They suggested the animatic to have longer pauses and the inclusion of more frames.
For the environment concept art, we were told that the garden did not resemble an Italian garden as the tones were not warm enough and we missed certain elements that should have been made to make it loom authentic. Instead, we were told to make it a British garden.
The feedback given for the 3d environment was the textures and length of the grass particles. For the corrected version of the scene, I shortened the length of the particles and changed the shaders of the fence. As the image texture clouds looked off, I also replaced them with a HDRI which worked much better with the environment. The texture of the fence was also changed for the noise to be more prominent as to be more consistent with the rest of the scene. After making those changes, the fixed environment looks like this.

Daisy helped in designing the supporting characters and Jin modelled them with colour variations.

Week 7
As the bird had yet to be rigged, we decided to work on the Previs instead to get the blender files for each individual shot confirmed, making the workflow easier once we began animating. The Previs and animation work were split between me, Franciska, Jin, and Marina. I did shots 1-11, and 36-42. Although we had to add an extra step in the pipeline for a placeholder of the bird model, this was useful in organising the shots and setting up the camera angle.

Week 8
The Previs was complete, and Franciska helped to create a side-by-side reel to check the timing of the shots.

For the animation, the work was also split between the four of us as shown below, with my section marked in blue.

The bird rig was also sent to us, however there were some problems with the eyes. I eventually realised the main problem was with the modifiers, as the mirror modifiers were not applied before the model was sent to Molly, and the separate eyelids were hidden so it was not moving with the armature, but there were still some issues with the hips and joints so we spend most of this week on shots that require little to no change in the bird's movement.
Week 9
By this time, the rigging of the bird had been fixed and we continued working on the animations. As the time taken to render the shots was too long, our tutor Paul told us to render the viewport animation instead to review the entire animation rather than individual shots. This was my personal favourite shot as I didn't expect the animation of the eyes popping out of the binoculars to work.
After most of the shots were animated, Franciska compiled all the viewport renders onto the animatic which was then reviewed by Paul. He gave us feedback on the timing and camera angles of certain shots, as there were a few continuity and flow issues with the scenes. Once those shots were fixed, we began fully rendering the project.
However, the main thing that disappointed me was the rendered grass particles as they looked different from the viewport. I assumed the grass particles looked okay through the material and rendered view and proceeded to do the Previs with the viewport render. The main problem was how it looked in the actual rendered scenes, as for some reason it appeared more rigid and unnatural with many objects clipping into each other. As I had already uploaded the file as the final environment and everyone had completed their section of the Previs, it would be unfair to fix the environment and make the other members redo the camera and object placements.
Week 10
The last week of this unit went smoothly, given we chose a simple story and had an effective production pipeline. The key issues we had in the final lap was the rendering quality of the shots, as we had to redo most of the renders to a 4k resolution to reduce the number of artifacts in each shot. Given that we decided to render everything in a large resolution, it took much longer than expected. This also made me realise how badly optimised the main file was since there were too many calculations made outside the camera view that were still being processed in the render. Fortunately, we did manage to render all the shots before the deadline and Franciska helped with adding post editing effects as well as the transitions.
Overall, I am thankful to be put in a group of people who have vastly different skills and worked in the areas we were strong in. Marina helped to lead out group not only by doing tedious portions of work such as the storyboard, and making sure that we stay on task and meets the goals of each week. Franciska contributed a lot in the planning stage of the production through the prop and character sheets, then helping us with her great expertise in 3d software and video editing. Jin gave us unique ideas in stylisation and modelled many of the props that needed to be interacted, with incredible attention to detail. Daisy also helped in giving us the idea for the story itself and created many 2d illustrations that gave life to the characters.
I hope to do more in the early stages of production such as storyboarding in future projects and will learn from the mistakes I made this time to create a better quality work for my groupmates in the future.
Creative Research
For this unit's creative research portion, we were given a lecture on researching objects. There are varied reasons to research an object and a general definition of an object in this unit's context. The idea that objects are “relational” guided me in understanding this topic as strong storytelling could be done through the physical items. After each lecture, we were also given time to discuss what was covered through seminars. I found the seminars to be useful in helping me understand the content of the lectures at a better level, as well as allowing us to develop our own opinions about what was taught.
A lecture that helped me greatly for my research topic was about researching makers. This was interesting to learn more about as the discussion about the "Death of the Author" has been prevalent on social media, and learning different ways to perceive a creator's authorship of their work especially in collaborative media, as well as the importance of being critical towards the actions of a maker.
For essential readings, the few that stood out to me as engaging and eye opening. Ursula Le Guin's 'Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction'. gives a unique perceptive of fiction that I had yet to consider. The idea of fiction as a "container" and the "botulism" of narratives stuck with me throughout the discussion. Edward Said's 'Orientalism' also made me more aware of the level of otherness which is placed involuntarily of those from different cultures and ethnicities, and is also an informative reading due to current tragedies of the world and the global reaction to the situation. These seminars and lectures have genuinely helped me in analysing the texts I read more critically and these skills would be useful not just for school essays but with the media seen in everyday life.
After the weeks of lectures and seminars, the topic I decided to choose was the production behind the Spider-Verse films. This topic interested my greatly as this franchise had one of the greatest impacts on me as an aspiring artist, and I distincly remember the disappointment I felt hearing about the mistreatment and harsh working conditions behind one of my favourite sequels and films of all time. I ended up using a lot of online articles as research as I found those to be the most useful in obtaining direct sources from producer interviews and recounts from the production staff.

basilone’s gif tutorial (part I)
I have been getting so many lovely comments on my gifs (thank you!) that I feel like I can give something back to all of you who want to create that sort of thing but have no idea on where to even begin. A lot of people have mentioned the colouring of my gifs in particular as something they really like, so I wanted to do a little tutorial on how to achieve it!
Part I of this tutorial will focus on how to go from absolutely nothing to the most basic of gifs. Most basic, in this case, means entirely unaltered: all this part of the tutorial will talk about is how I create a gif. (Other people may have other methods but this is the one I’m most familiar with.)
Part II will include how to go from the basic gif we created in the first part to the kind of gif you see me publish in my gifsets, with all the colours and sharpening settings and all that jazz.

What you need for this first part:
A video file of whatever you want to gif
KMPlayer
Photoshop (I use CS6, other versions are cool too)
A little bit of patience
My end result once I have followed all the steps of part I looks like this:

Step 1
Open your video in KMPlayer. I used episode 4 of The Pacific for this tutorial! Search in the video until you find the exact scene you want to make a gif of. (For the sake of part II of this tutorial, I’ve chosen a scene with lots of daylight and colours.)
Step 2
Pause the video, if you haven’t already, and then click CTRL+G. You will now see this box appear:

Use my exact settings (shown above) for this one. In Extract to, choose the folder you want the screencaps to land in. Make sure the option Every frame is selected. Now click ‘start’.
Step 3
Play the video until the scene you want to gif is done. Pause it again. Click CTRL+G once more and press ‘stop’.
Step 4
Go to the folder on your PC that you saved the screencaps to. You’ll likely have hundreds (if not thousands) of them, but please don’t panic! Delete all the screencaps that don’t belong to the part of the scene you want to gif.
Important rule of thumb! How many screencaps you need depends on the size you want to make your gif. For gifs that are 540x304px, use no more than 50-60 screencaps tops. For gifs that are 268x151px, use no more than 80. For 151x85px (please love yourself what are you doing), just go crazy – you can easily use more than 100 for that. (You don’t wanna be in the situation where you’ve created and coloured your gif, only to find out when saving it that it exceeds Tumblr’s petty 8mb size and you have to go back to delete some frames.. believe me. :’))
Step 5
Start up your Photoshop (yay!) and go to File → Scripts → Load Multiple DICOM Files. Select the folder your screencaps are in, then click ‘ok’.
Make sure you’ve got all the tools open that you’re gonna need for both parts of this tutorial. You do this by going to Window in the Photoshop menu bar and selecting the following:

Step 6
Timeline is gonna be your new best friend! Click on Create Frame Animation. Then click on the little downward arrow that has three small stripes next to it, which is gonna make this next menu appear:

Select Make frames from layers and watch how all the individual frames are loaded into the timeline. Good, right? (You can see the individual frames in the Layers box as well, which we’ll get to in a hot moment.)
Step 7
Select all the frames on the timeline and click the little arrow next to where it says 0 sec below the frames. We don’t want to set our gif to 0 sec. We want to set it to 0,08. So, we select Other and type in 0,08 and then click ‘ok’ like we know what we’re doing.
That’s the movement part of the gif done, believe it or not, so we must be doing something right!
Step 8
So, yeah, we got it to move. Now what, you might ask? ;) Now it’s time to actually make sure that Tumblr doesn’t freak out about us uploading it. Here’s how we’re gonna do that.
Make sure all the frames are still selected on the timeline. Now select the Crop tool, set it to 540 px by 304 px or whatever size you want your gif to have, and start fiddling around with the corners of the image. You can select the part of the frame you actually want in your gif that way. Double-click on your selection once you’re satisfied with it or click the check mark that appears on screen. Tadaa! Gif is resized!

Step 9
Now, I assume that you’re like me in this case but if you’re not please feel free to skip past this step. I always have more frames than I technically need. I start off with about 70 screencaps/frames for big gifs, which I then need to select down to ideally 40-50 screencaps/frames total!
What I personally do is that I will make the gif the way I just described with all 70 frames in place, and then I will play it a couple of times in the timeframe mode to see which sections can feasibly be cut away. You can do the same thing, try it! (And you get to see how nifty the gif is gonna look, too!)

Select the frames on the timeline that you want to get rid of and click the little garbage can on the timeline. That gets rid of half of the trouble, but now you gotta do something else. Remember me saying something about the Layers box? That’s gonna be your other best friend in this first part. Go to that box and select the layers you just deleted from the timeframe.

How do you know which layers you’ve deleted? Select all the frames you’ve still got on the timeline. Those layers will get a little eyeball in front of them in the Layers box. Any layer that does not have the eyeball is one you’ve deleted. Select those layers and delete them by simply pressing delete on your keyboard or clicking on the garbage can in the Layers box. 
(Alternately, as shown in the screencap above, select the first frame on the timeline. It will get an eyeball in front of it. Delete everything below that layer in the Layers box. Select the last frame on the timeline. Delete everything above that layer in the Layers box. NEVER delete frames in the middle, it’s gonna disrupt the flow of your gif like whoa!!)
Step 10
Almost there!
Click the button on the bottom left of the Timeline box, which will say ‘convert to video timeline’ when you hover over it.

Now select all your layers in the Layers box and right-click on them with your mouse. You’ll see the following pop-up. Select Convert to smart object.

Save your gif as follows. Go to File → Save for Web. Use these settings:

Click ‘save’, give your gif a name, and you’re all set!!

Hey, thanks buddy! You’re hecka sweet. I can give you a little preview into my own process, but keep in mind that I’m sure there’s a heck of a lot of better tutorials (I’ll link them in the tutorial, they’ll be under part 2 coloring section). But this is how I go about it:
Part 1: Prep
Believe it or not, this is where most of my time goes. I’ll assume that you have some kind of photoshop that can make gifs at this point (I personally use Photoshop CC 2015) as well as the video files for whatever you want to gif.
First thing after having the video files for what’cha want to gif, we’ll have to upload the frames to photoshop. My method depends on how short the video files actually is. 
If it’s a short mp4 files (e.g. a trailer from yt), I can just upload the part I want to gif by directly opening photoshop and clicking on the top menu: file >> import >> video to frames. Click on the video file and select the range you want to gif.

Easy peasy, you can now skip to step 2 in that case!
Unfortunately, the file is usually a large, 2-3 hr long, mkv file so that won’t cut it. Instead, you’ll need create a file that contains each frame as a screenshot (don’t worry, it’s not as tedious as it sounds!). There’s several ways to go about this, but I personally use a combination of Adapter and VLC.

Adapter will allow you to input a range and create a file to save your frames. Makes sure to pick a custom place to save your files (under directory) and your export frame rate to be ~24 images per second. At the bottom of the screen, you can also pick the file type of your screenshots - I personally will save them as PNG. I use VLC to find the range (since it’s the only video player I can find that opens mkv files AND works on mac) since unfortunately Adapter won’t let you preview the actual video, unlike when uploading to photoshop.

Once that’s all done, we can finally upload to photoshop. To do this, you’ll go to the top menu like you would to directly download the video file, but instead click file >> scripts >> load files into stack. Click “Browse” and select all the screenshots in your file. Click okay.
Give it a few moments (or in my case, 15 minutes or so bc it’s slow for me for some reason ;_;) until the upload is complete. Once it’s complete, you click “create frame animation” at the bottom (if you don’t see the timeline, go to the top menu and select window >> timeline).

You’ll see only one frame so far. No worries, select the 4 little lines at the top right of the timeline and select “make frames from layers”.

So close! Now we need to reverse the frames and the layers. This does get a little tedious, so bear with me. Select all the frames and go down to the same drop down menu (with the 4 little lines) and click reverse frames. To reverse the layers select all except the bottom one (for some reason it’ll give me an error if I try to select all of them) and go to the top menu: layer >> arrange >> reverse. Then click that bottom, troublesome layer and click layer >> arrange >> bring to the top.
A tedious method indeed, but you can make it easier by memorizing the hot keys or, better yet, creating an action (which allows you to save numerous steps).

Finally (I swear there’s light at the end of this tunnel), go to the bottom of the timeline and click “once” and select “forever” to the gif will loop once you save it.

OKIE DOKIE, FINALLY READY TO ACTUALLY MAKE THE GIF.
Part 2: Coloring + Sharpening + etc
There are loads of methods on coloring, which heavily depends on your preferences. No matter what, I usually start with levels to up the contrast. Add a little bit of darkness (leftmost slider��thing - don’t go too crazy, I stay within the 5-15 range unless I’m doing something special), and up the brightness by sliding the other two sliders to the left.
Now it all depends on you. Do you want vibrant? Single color specific? Pale? Whatever you might want, I tend to use the following the most: levels, selective color, color balance, hue/saturation, brightness/contrast, vibrance, and occasionally gradient map.

Okie dokie, before moving forward, we’ll need to resize the gif if you haven’t already. Tumblr specifically allows for only different three widths: 540 px (one gif across), 268 px (two gifs per row), and 177 px/178 px/177 px (three gifs per row, yes the middle is 1 px more). The height has less limitations, but all your gifs should generally be the same within one gifset (unless you’re going for something interesting); each gif in a row specifically has to be the same height, however, or else you’re gonna get some funky results.
Note: my most generic sets tend to be 8 gifs, 2 per row. These tend to have a height of 154 px. But all up to you, my dude.
Once you’re all done coloring and resizing, it’s time to sharpen. The quickest way to sharpen is to convert your timeline to “video timeline”. But I personally dislike that method for various reasons (mostly bc saving a gif while in that mode takes like 700 years for my poor computer and I have less control over each individual frame), so I’ll show you my tedious as heck way (hint: once again, I use actions to do this). 
To sharpen each frame, you have the frame and corresponding layer selected. Then in the top menu, select filter >> sharpen >> smart sharpen. My settings are as follows: amount ranges between 250-400%, radius is 0.3-0.4 px, reduce noise is 10%, and remove gaussian blur. You’ll have to do this for each frame/layer, so again I suggest either learning/downloading actions or learn the video timeline method.
Lastly, make sure your gif delay is around 0.5 secs - or at least that’s what I use. Sometimes I’ll go up 0.7 or even 0.9 secs if I have a really really small amount of frames and I want to make the gif look like it lasts longer ^^;.
Part 3: Saving and Posting
Okie dokie, so this should be the easy part, right? Maybe? All depends on your gif. You see, when you save (top menu: file >> export >> save for web), you gotta make sure your gif is under 3M…but I usually try to get under 2.87 M to be safe (I’ve saved at 2.9M before and the file ended up being bumped up to over 3M when I checked the file itself….very rude).
Anywho, the best way to cut down size is deleting frames. Other methods include playing around with the coloring (less vibrant, for instance) and height (especially for 540 px gifs).
So once you get a decent size, click “preview” to see how your spiffy gif will be looking. Once you’re satisfied, you can finally save! Upload those bad boys to tumblr and tag them with appropriate tags (e.g. the fandom edit tags or tagging blogs if that’s your sort of thing). Finally done to show the world :’D

Hi! I'm no expert, but I've been making gifs for at least like four or five years, and over that time I've learned a lot, so I want to share that stuff :) Also, someone requested that I teach them how to gif. I hope this helps!
This tutorial will teach you how to create simple but quality gifs, like the ones in the gifset above! Those gifs are all from TV shows, but it should apply to giffing almost anything. I’ll be using KMPlayer and Photoshop.

Step 1: getting Photoshop, KMPlayer, and quality videos
Get Photoshop: I was able to buy my Photoshop, so I don’t have any free downloads to recommend, I’m sorry! But there are plenty of other Photoshop blogs on tumblr that can help with this stuff :) And there are some deals from adobe that might help you afford it if you want to buy it instead. They had a great one for college students that totally helped me. Anyways, if you can get it somewhere/somehow, here are the next steps...

Get your video: If you’re going to download a movie or show, I recommend getting torrents from thepiratebay.org and using μTorrent to download them. (Here's a tutorial for how to download stuff with it.) Be careful with viruses and stuff, though! When you look for a video, try to get one that's as HD as you can find, meaning one that is 720p or 1080p! That tells you what the height of the frames will be, in pixels. They are usually big files, but should be much better quality than others. Also, try to find videos that do NOT have network logos or ads on them!! They can make gifs look pretty bad, and it takes some serious cropping to get rid of them, which then makes it look even less quality.
Step 2: taking your screencaps Open your video in KMPlayer. (Open KMPlayer and press CTRL O.) Get to the exact scene/clip you want to gif. (Tip: it's hard to find the exact place you're looking for, so I recommend using your right/left arrow keys to skip through a little at a time.)
Once you're at the part of the video you want to gif, press CTRL G. This brings up the "frame extraction" window. This is where, as you can probably guess, you extract the frames for your gifs! Here are the settings I use:

I use these exact settings almost every time, except for the image format section. I go between JPEG and PNG. I use JPEG if I'm making a smaller gif (like 268px width or less) and I use a PNG if I'm making a larger gif (like 540px width.) This is because (or at least I've heard) PNGs are the highest quality option, JPEGs are the middle, and bitmaps are the lowest (don't use them!!) The only downside is that the higher the quality, the higher the screencap's file size. So use PNGs sparingly if that matters to you.
You can also change the "prefix" of the screencap filenames.
After figuring out all of these settings, click "start"! Then press play on the video, play until the end of what you're giffing, and press "stop" and pause it.
Then, in the frame extraction window, click the "open" button that’s to the far right of the "extract to" bar. This will open up the folder location of your new screencaps.
Step 2.5: organizing your screencaps What you'll want to do now is organize the screencaps into separate folders for each individual gif. This is something that's good to do whether it's all from one scene or you're doing a compilation of different clips. This is because, when you upload the screencaps into PS, it's best to have them in their own little folders!
(Tip: Personally I use 75 frames or less in each gif. This is because that’s the limit on the sharpening action I use, but I also think it's a good amount to stop at.)
Step 3: importing your screencaps into Photoshop
Next, we're finally going to move the screencaps you took into Photoshop. Yay!
Open file > scripts > load files into stacks. (Tip: Sometimes this function doesn't work on certain Photoshop downloads. If this is the case for you, here's a tutorial on how to get around that!) This brings up this window:

Click "browse" and find the folder with the screencaps you want for your gif. Select all of them and click "open". Then click "ok" and wait for them to load. Each screencap will load as its own layer in the layers panel, which is what you want to start with.
Step 4: changing the screencaps from layers into frames in the timeline
Once they're all loaded as layers, go to window > timeline. This brings up the timeline!
At this point, things should look something like this:

Now we can start using the timeline! In this method we convert the layers into frames that live inside the timeline, which we’ll use to make the gif move.
First click on the button in the middle of the timeline panel that says "create frame animation" right here:

Then click on the little three bars icon on the top right corner of the timeline. Click "make frames from layers" on the thing that pops up .
It depends, but you might need to reverse the frames (if it imports them in backwards). So just click on that three bars icon again and click "reverse frames".
Step 5: cropping the gif
It's really important to know the Tumblr dimensions! If you have a gif that doesn't fit the dimensions most Tumblr users view it at it can get distorted.
So the width dimensions you should use are:
A row of just one: 540px wide 
A row of two: 268px wide each 
A row of three: 177px & 178px & 177px

So to crop it, go to the crop tool (duh, sorry) and enter in the dimensions you want into the area I highlighted here:

You'll probably notice it moves really fast and stops moving after playing once. That's because we haven't gotten to the step to fix that yet. But that's next!
Step 6: timing, looping, etc.
Timing: Select all of the frames. You can do this by selecting the first frame, holding shift, and clicking on the last frame. Now click the little arrow next to where it says "0 secs." under any of the frame previews right here:

Click on "Other..." and type "0.14" into the text field. That represents the number of seconds, or usually the fraction of a second, that each frame will play for. (It's "0.14" in this case because of the way we entered the settings in KMPlayer in the "Frames to Extract" section. The number depends on what you enter there.) Press enter/okay.
Looping: Next change the looping setting from "once" to "forever". Here's where I'm talking about:

Step 7: sharpening the gif frames
This step can either be done at this point (before coloring it) or later (right after coloring it.) I go back and forth on which is better, and different people say different things. So just play around with it!
I use this sharpening action. It can sharpen up to 75 frames, which is a really good amount in my opinion.
Once you have a sharpening action downloaded, go back to Photoshop and go to window > actions. Click this little menu button, then click "Load Actions...".

In the window that pops up, choose whatever sharpening action you downloaded and open it. This will load it into your actions panel!
Next, click the menu button on the upper right corner of the timeline panel and click "Flatten Frames Into Layers". Now there will be a new set of layers that are labeled Frame 1, Frame 2, Frame 3, etc. Keep those, and then you can delete the OLD set of layers. (That can significantly lower the file size, and it doesn’t mess anything up if you do it right!)
Now select the very first frame in the timeline, labeled "1", and select the corresponding layer, labeled "Frame 1".
Then open the sharpening action's folder within the actions panel and select the folder labeled with the number of frames you have in your gif. For example, I have 18 frames in my gif, so I selected the folder labeled "18 frames". Or at least that's the way they labeled things in the action I'm using. You may have to explore yours to figure it out.

Step 7.5: grouping your layers (a baby step!) A bonus step that I recommend you do is to put all your layers into a group to keep things neat. Just select all of them and press CTRL G.
Step 8: adding a PSD and/or coloring it yourself!!
Here's the fun part! Now you can let out your creativeness with the coloring. It takes a LOT of practice to get good at this, trust me. I've been doing this for YEARS and I still hate my results sometimes. But if that happens to you, too, don't let that stop you from trying again! (God, I sound like a motivational speaker or something, sorry!)
Here’s some background on PSDs for beginners, but you can totally skip this bit...
"PSD" stands for "Photoshop document", meaning a file you make or edit in Photoshop (sorry, kind of self explanatory). On Tumblr, when people talk about PSDs, they're usually referring to a document with layers that add effects (mostly adjustment layers) to a gif/photo/graphic, etc. Also referred to as a "coloring". They usually include things like brightness/contrast, vibrance, curves, selective color, etc. People post these so you can download them and use them for your own work! (Just don't repost and claim as your own. Not cool, man.)
All you have to do is download the file, open it in Photoshop, make sure you have the layers panel open (windows > layers), and drag the PSD file's window on top of your file's window, but keep them separate so you see both at once. Then drag the PSD file's group of layers (but not the background!) over to your file.

(Then you can close the PSD window.) Then on YOUR file, mess around with the adjustment layers and stuff to change it to whatever you want it to look like. I usually edit mine like crazy!

Coloring it yourself
I'm not going to do a full-on coloring tutorial right now, but here is my tag for those made by other people!
Basically you should learn how to use the most important adjustment layers: curves, brightness/contrast, selective color, color balance, hue/saturation, vibrance, levels, exposure, and gradient maps. At least those are the ones that I use the most and find super useful. Many of the tutorials in that coloring tutorial tag I just linked go over how to use those. So check them out!
In this case, I used my current fave PSD by dracoharry. (I’ve noticed it works on most shows I gif, so it’s super useful! I actually used it for all of the gifs in the gifset I made for this post.)

Step 9: adding text & learning font settings (optional)
This is usually when I add text to the gif, if relevant.
There are various fonts and settings you can use for this, but to make things easier, here's a font PSD by adorkablelena. It’s for subtitles/quotes. I recently started using it. It's really cute! If you're not into it though, here's my tag for other font PSDs you can check out.
When you find a font PSD you like, open it and drag it into your document the same way you would with a regular PSD.
Select the text tool and replace the text with your quote. (Tip: Try not to misquote or misspell things if you can help it! I've done it and it sucks when that happens. Ugh.)
As far as colors go... For the primary quote I make the text white, and the secondary quote I usually make it yellow (#ffde00). And if there is a third I'll use some shade of orange, and anything after that I just use whatever I can make look the best. The stroke color I use varies sometimes, but I usually use black (#000000).
Finally, select the move tool (V) and make sure "smart guides" are turned on. To check this, go to view > show > smart guides, and make sure it's checked. Now when you drag around the text (select its layer first), you can see little purple vertical/horizontal guides pop up when you drag the text to the center of either direction. For the subtitle we're making, we want it to be centered horizontally and close to the bottom of the gif, but not too close. Also, if you have more than one line of text, just press enter somewhere in the text that splits it into similar-sized lines. Here's an example of all of this stuff put together:

Step 10: saving for web
There are a lot of settings to remember and play around with when saving for web, and specifically for Tumblr. 
First, go to file > export > save for web (legacy).
Here you'll see a lot of settings to choose from, but they're not as intimidating as they may look!

Red highlight: There are multiple options in the top drop down list in the area I highlighted that are good to use. I usually use “Adaptive”, but “Perceptual” and “Selective” are good options too. In my experience, the rest make your gif look pretty gross. For the drop down list under that I choose "Pattern". This arranges the pixels in a pattern, and I like the look of that more than the two other viable options, ”Diffusion” and “Noise”.
Orange highlight: This is where you choose the number of color shades that are in the gif. I use the top amount allowed, 256, because this achieves the highest quality possible! If you need to make the gif's file size smaller, you can lower this amount, but I don't recommend it. If it's a B&W gif you can sometimes get away with using less and have it still look just as quality.
Yellow highlight: Looping options: Forever. Very important! Like I showed earlier, you can also set this setting before you get to the "save for web" option. Either way, this makes it so the gif loops forever.
Green highlight: Gif size! As I mentioned earlier, there is a limit for Tumblr. This example is a pretty small gif (592.9K) and the current file size limit on Tumblr is 3MB. Tumblr seems to change this limit a lot though, so you may want to look that up once in awhile to stay up to date.
Turquoise highlight: Always check the box next to “Convert to sRGB”. I just learned that this setting is important. It basically keeps the vibrance intact when you take it from Photoshop to Tumblr. Read a much better explanation here! :)
Then just click "Save...", choose the file location, and press "Save" again.
Step 11: uploading/posting to Tumblr
Now, last but not least, it's time to upload it to Tumblr! I probably don’t need to explain this, but I’m going to anyways. It's super-duper easy. Just go to your dashboard and click on this button:

Then the post creation window pops up, and just go on from there. Upload your images/gifs, drag them around to arrange them however you like, and add a caption if you want.
(Tip: Don't forget to add tags! It's super important to add tags if you want people to actually find your post. Only the first 5 tags show up in the main Tumblr tag-search results (ugh wtf, right?) but sometimes the other ones you add will show up on the general search page. I don't really get how to explain it or how it works tbh, sorry! But I do know that many fandoms have developed their own tagging-language to find people's posts more easily (and avoid spam) which is very useful once you figure it out. For example, if I was posting a gifset of Cheryl Blossom from Riverdale, I'd tag it with things like "riverdaleedit" and "cherylblossomedit" and maybe "madelainepetschedit". So basically the name of the show/character/actor/ship plus "edit", no spaces. Or an abbreviation of any of those, like "spnedit" or "dwinchesteredit". I hope that at least makes a little sense? As far as the amount of tags that will show up on individual blogs, I'm not positive, but I believe you can use up to 30. After that the post won't appear on the tag's page. Grrr.)
Then, of course, just post it! I recommend saving it as a draft and then posting it at a time when a lot of people are likely to be on Tumblr. (There's research done on this timing!)
