Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen (subtitled excerpt - PART 3) ▶️FULL VIDEO👉 FULL POEM VIDEO ▶️ https://youtu.be/kEYK0aiRPmg 👈
"Dulce et Decorum Est" was written by the British poet Wilfred Owen during World War I. The poem depicts the horrors of war and the harsh realities that soldiers faced on the front lines. Owen draws upon his own experiences as a soldier in the trenches, where he witnessed the devastating effects of gas attacks. He refutes the idealism in the Latin phrase "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori," meaning "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country," a commonly held belief during the time.

The Burying Party is released this week
The time has come when we are able to release our film, The Burying Party to our friends who have been so supportive. It has been quite a journey. Crowdfunding campaigns, festivals and public receptions like the one in Birkenhead where we met Prince Harry and Meghan, Sir Kennneth Branagh and last week in Edinburgh where the Lord Provost invited us to a public screening for the City.
Our film tells the story of the tumultuous final year of probably the greatest war poet, Wilfred Owen as he makes his way through the the literary circles of England and Scotland in 2017 then culminating in the fatal ‘research trip’ where he returns to the front, earns the Military Cross for a successful assault at Joncourt. He is asked by High Command, not previously renowned for basic logic, to do it again at the Sambre Ors Canal which had been held by the Germans since the start of the war.
What our film did not shy away from was Owen’s sexuality. It had always been shelved in our home country of the UK. His brother Harold decided to burn his letters after his death at Ors, but that didn’t stop many of his followers reading between the lines and citing his his admiration of Sassoon and his attraction to fellow lumimaries such as Charles Moncrieff.
Any independent film maker will tell you that it isn’t easy. So why do we do it? For 95% of film makers it is not lucrative. It is more about doing the best you can with the budget available. Ultimately it is about being noticed by those with the real funds. It is possible, as has happened in the last two Oscar years, that an independent film has emerged from a festival and become an an Oscar winner. For such a perfect storm to happen, you need friends, influencers and a chain of positive events to happen which either involves much champagne drunk in smoke filled rooms or an issue which is prevalent to the era.In the 100th anniversary of that horrific conflict, it was always our intention to drink less champagne and raise awareness of the the dangers of empire building.
The film won 15 awards and has received an average of four stars which is incredible for us, given our operating budget. If you count our crowdfunding effort alone (discounting private funds), we raised £21k. When famous actor and film director (Dunkirk, Harry Potter, Hamlet, Murder on the Orient Express, Thor) Sir Kenneth Branagh came to see his sister play Owen’s mother, he said it was just so refreshing to see actors act without too much recourse to CGI. That was music to our ears.

We hope you enjoy the film as much as we did making it and thank you once again to everyone, particularly in the Tumblr LGBT community for tagging and re-posting for us during that crucial time when we were raising funds. Your help and support will never be forgotten. Finally Firmin ‘Oceane’ Lanoix, a young man from France should receive special attention as it was he who galvanised that support and helped us to reach our target.

Futility
BY WILFRED OWEN
Move him into the sun— Gently its touch awoke him once, At home, whispering of fields half-sown. Always it woke him, even in France, Until this morning and this snow. If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know. Think how it wakes the seeds— Woke once the clays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides Full-nerved, still warm, too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall? —O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth's sleep at all?

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.— Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,— My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen Owen perished on the western front a week before the end of the war. The majority of his poems, including this one, were published posthumously. #wilfredowen #wilfredowenpoetry #wwi https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ_1wXlhD37/?utm_medium=tumblr

YOUTUBE CHANNEL AD MAIORA - SARA ALBANESE https://youtu.be/u0l3DtclI8w Wilfred Owen belonged to that group of War Poets who denounced the horrors of the First World War and especially "the old Lie" of propaganda: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, which means that dying for the motherland is sweet and glorious. In this video we analyze Owen's work and we compare it to Rupert Brooke's opposite perspective (see my video about War Poets, part 1, Rupert Brook and his sonnet "The Soldier") NON SOLO PER I #maturandi Ma anche per tutti coloro che credono nella #poesia come avvertimento, testimonianza e strumento di comunicazione #english #englishliterature #literature #war #warpoetry #warpoets #wilfredowen #owen #rupertbrooke #brooke #dulceetdecorumest #soldier #wwi #firstworldwar #propaganda #lie #englishlecture #englishclass #matura #matura2019 #maturita2019 #maturità2019 https://www.instagram.com/p/BysQckkiLp1/?igshid=fy0pp61j3pmv

Regeneration Just finished reading - how historical fiction should be done, giving voice to real characters in a novelistic form, conjouring a world in which we can explore and reflect upon. Nominally based around the renowned poet Siegfried Sassoon's time spent in Craiglockhart mental hospital in 1917, where he happens to meet another patient, the as-yet-unknown war poet, Wilfred Owen, and Dr Rivers the hospital's lead psychiatrist. The book expands upon this First World War era setting to bring in themes of male friendship, homosexuality, medical ethics, equality, choice, stammering, creativity... Not bad going for a short, austere novel. Can't wait to read the next two parts of this award-winning trilogy.         #books #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #goodreads #latestread #reading #PatBarker #Regeneration #war #poet #SiegfriedSassoon #WilfredOwen #book #bookish #bookaholic #bookphotography #bookaddict (at Craiglockhart) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv1xrHXAWa_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=t6wkkhtmv9x0
