Hi! I have a TF2 request/suggestion for you if you want. You can choose the mercs you like to use, though I may humbly request Engie. Romantic or platonic, and in whatever form you would like.
The team has a new recruit! They are one of the most genuine, patient, friendly, sweetest people one could ever meet. They make everyone breakfast in the mornings, they listen to people's problems, they volunteer at a puppy orphanage, talk down muggers in the street, essentially a bottle of sunshine as a person.
On the battlefield however, they are most certainly one of the scariest people alive. They are incredibly strong and durable, no need for weapons when they can tear people apart with their bears hands and teeth. They are brutal, carnage incarnate, and have absolutely no fear whatsoever.
Now, their sweetness is genuine, they are not faking anything. Outside of battle they are one of the most pleasant, stable people on the team. If ever asked, the best reply they can ever give is "This is a war with no true death. (Thanks to the respawn machine) When you can play a game with no consequences, why not have a little fun? ~"
What do the mercs think about their new teammate? How did they react to seeing their first time on the battlefield? How scary is the game with a player who doesn't care?
(sorry for the length there, I get all excited. This would obviously only really work if the respawn machine is a part of the setting.)
Thank you so much for the request!! My first one :) And don’t worry about the length!!! I love excited rambles x3
Sorry that this is short!! i wrote a little hcs list for this for a little more content, but it might take a lil longer to post LOL I'll link it here when it's ready <3 and sorry for the wait, i hope this is what you were lookin for!!
Wild, meet tame.
Engineer/GNC Reader, 1k words
It was like watching a switch flip, he'd never seen it before, ever. Not as drastically as it would with you, at least. One minute he'd be wiping encrusted blood off the turret of his sentry, remnants of some poor enemy Scout, when he'd turn his head to see you barreling into the front lines. The team's Medic struggles, then practically gives up trying to keep up with your rampaging pace.
“It's like zhey don't don't care!” Medic howls, crouching down by his dispenser to recoup lost energy. He shrugs, you're one hell of a bottled storm out here, and he can only wonder if there's anything deeper down that you're hiding away. He can see you still, just barely, from the vantage point he'd set his nest in, and by God was it a bloodbath down there. The enemies are torn to shreds in seconds, not unusual when under fire from the hulking Heavy and his repertoire of miniguns. But, the lack of gunfire is what was most unsettling.
He could see you, teeth bared, lunging in a fruitful hunt for blood, the enemy soldier screaming as he tried to kick you off of him, nearly blowing you both to bits, but sky high like a bloody firework. It was effective, and their offensive pushes were a lot weaker with someone like you guarding the captured points. There was always a nervous hum in the air when someone would call out your death, a moment for the enemy to recoup, only for them to be torn down by your wrath again.
It'd been nothing but victories recently, and it was unlike anything they'd ever experienced. Even those above them had been a little nicer recently, and boy it sure was infectious.
“Y’doing alright there, Engie?” He closed the fridge door, and looked around. What had he come in here for, that your voice had drawn him out of his search for? The cold air that brushed past him raised a shiver across his skin.
“Whatever you're after, I can cook up, I don't mind.” You're humming, pouring something into a pan on the stove, and whatever it is, smells amazing.
“Those pancakes?” He asks, stepping over gingerly, usually anyone brave enough to cook in the communal kitchen would tell any company to get out, lest they be branded by a scorching hot spatula across the face. Not you though.
“Yeah! I'll make you a few. You been eating enough, all holed up in that workshop of yours?” The sweet smell is even stronger now as you flip the pancakes, your words just as sweet, with a simple, kind hesitance in the playful tease. He knows you wouldn't poke fun at his work.
“I think there's some honey or chocolate chips around here if you want some in ‘em, hon.” And with that small mission given, you're back to humming some classical piece he'd heard playing in Medic’s office once or twice, familiar.
There's a beat of silence as he just… watches you. Only for a moment, eyes lingering where they should, just curious. He wants to ask something, but the words don't exactly come easily. He turns, and begins to rummage through some of the slightly-too-high cabinets, finding the chocolate chips, which some dickhead has placed just out of reach. He reaches high, tip toed, fingers just barely tickling the bag before he manages to swipe it down off the shelf, and bring it over to you.
The bag hits the counter with a rattly thwump, and you lean over, looking inside. “These’ll do just fine…” The smile on your face is nearly eerily pleasant as you take the bag and dump a small handful into the poured batter. There's a smoky smell in the air, but the baked goods seem fine, and Pyro isn't hanging around yet.
There's been a few moments where he questions you, your motives, your actions, but… You hadn't done anything to seem like a bad person. If anything, you'd done nothing but prove the opposite! Hell, even the Doc's birds liked you, and that's a real feat! “Thank you kindly, ma’am.” He muttered, pondering you deeply, though trying not to, you'd done nothing to earn such scrutiny.
He's staring, he's sure, but he can't seem to pull his gaze away from you. “What made you erh…” Ordinary of him to start a sentence without being sure if where to take it. “Consider… this, as a mercenary, ain't the greatest work for kind folk like you.” He huffs, stepping over to your side, leaning against the flour smeared counter. “As kind as you want to be, at least.” He squints curiously, you're not quite looking at him, glancing to him out to corner of your eye once in a while.
“Am I being investigated, copper?” You coo, smiling coyly, and flip a pancake onto a plate to your left before turning right to face him, crossing your arms across your chest. “I know what you're thinking.”
The air around you is warm, and swirling with the delectable smells of baking and everything sweet. “It's different here, than out there.” You turn back to the pan, prepping another pancake.
A shrill squeak rings out from the hall, and you both snap your heads to the noise, before it squeals down the hall, away from the kitchen.
“What in tarnation— I don't think you're some… monster,” He chides, shaking his head and wringing his gloves hands.
“Not at all, but it's just… So fascinatin’. Watching you go about, tearin’ them to shreds like it's nothin’ to ya, don't even flinch when the enemy Sniper gets a pick on you!”
Even he was prone to a nervous moment or two in a fight, but you seemed to have some sort of miraculous handle on it all though.
“I know it's different.” He resigns, and you slide another pancake onto the plate, then towards him.
You shrug, and turn the stove off, placing a small cover over the larger plate of previously made pancakes.
“There’s no harm in going a little crazy out there, I might come back with a new scar if I'm unlucky, but, well…” Your lips are pursed tightly as you mull over your next words.
“Well, there's nothing to it, we can't die, Dell.” You murmur, he takes a pancake and gingerly bites into it.
“The real fight is only lost when one team gets bored and gives up, basically, so why not have a little fun with it?”

ASD spaces should talk more abt how autism affects gender presentation. its kinda wild to be branded gender conforming OR non-conforming based on how you wear your clothes/hair/etc and which colors you prefer, when youre simply choosing them out of sensory reasons
im deemed gender non-conforming bc i strongly prefer men’s clothing, which is bc its thicker, better quality, less flimsy and easy to break (i have awful motor skills so i tend to accidentally rip fabric), less tight, less complicated and more utilitarian. it has nothing to do with gender. im not ”male-leaning” bc i prefer men’s clothing. the fact that im deemed GNC in the context of my society is a neutral descriptor, like being called brunette due to having brown hair.
i also LOVE the color pink. generally, looking at a nice color makes my brain go wheee. a nice shade of pink makes it go WHEEEEEE. and the fact that a bit of pigment affects my gender presentation is absolutely bizarre. and if i have long hair bc combing my fingers through it feels good, why is that a reflection of my ”inner gender identity”? if i wear a dress bc its convenient and comfortable, why is that an act of conformity to my assigned sex?
on the flip side, its also funny that identifying as genderless (agender) due to my lack of understanding for this particular social norm means that im in the trans camp. which, in terms of gender avoidance, is like backing up from the Gender-Essentialism Pit until i fall into the Gender Revolutionary Ravine. its a much more preferable place to be, but its still weird for the non-existence of something to be seen as intentional contrast to the existence of something, thus reflecting it rather than rejecting it
navigating gender as an autistic person is just. incredibly confusing sometimes

At Diettox, we are dedicated to helping you find the best protein supplements in Abu Dhabi. This guide will also explore options for Protein Supplements in Dubai, ensuring you have access to top-quality products throughout the UAE.
Why Use Protein Supplements?
Protein is a critical macronutrient that plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including muscle repair and growth, enzyme production, and immune system support. Here are some key reasons to consider adding protein supplements to your diet:
Muscle Growth and Repair: Protein is essential for repairing and building muscle tissues, making it crucial for athletes and those engaging in regular strength training.
Weight Management: Protein can help you feel fuller for longer, reducing overall calorie intake and aiding in weight loss.
Convenience: Protein supplements provide a quick and easy way to meet your daily protein needs, especially for those with busy schedules.
Types of Protein Supplements
Understanding the different types of protein supplements available will help you choose the best one for your needs. Here are some common types:
Whey Protein
Whey protein is one of the most popular and widely used protein supplements. It is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids and is quickly absorbed by the body, making it ideal for post-workout recovery.
Casein Protein
Casein protein is another milk-derived protein that is absorbed more slowly than whey. It provides a steady release of amino acids, making it suitable for consumption before bedtime to support overnight muscle repair.
Plant-Based Protein
Plant-based proteins, such as pea, rice, hemp, and soy protein, are excellent options for vegans and those with dairy allergies. They provide a complete amino acid profile and are typically easier to digest.
Protein Blends
Protein blends combine different types of protein sources to provide a balanced amino acid profile and varied digestion rates. They are versatile and can be used at any time of the day.
Choosing the Right Protein Supplement
Selecting the right protein supplements in Abu Dhabi involves understanding your dietary preferences, fitness goals, and any potential allergies or intolerances.
Identify Your Goals
Your fitness goals will determine the type and amount of protein you need:
Muscle Gain: Look for supplements with a higher protein content per serving and additional amino acids like BCAAs.
Weight Loss: Choose low-calorie, low-carb protein powders that are high in protein to support satiety and muscle maintenance.
General Health: Opt for balanced protein supplements that provide a moderate amount of protein along with other essential nutrients.
Check the Ingredients
Ensure the protein supplement is free from unnecessary additives, artificial sweeteners, and fillers. Look for products with clean labels and natural ingredients.
Consider Quality and Taste
Choose protein supplements from reputable brands known for their quality and taste. Reading customer reviews can provide insights into the taste and mixability of the product.
Where to Buy Protein Supplements in Abu Dhabi
When searching for protein supplements in Abu Dhabi, you have several options, both in-store and online.
Local Stores
Pharmacies: Pharmacies like Life Pharmacy and Boots offer a selection of protein supplements from well-known brands.

Online Retailers
E-commerce Websites: Platforms like Souq, Noon, and Amazon.ae offer a wide range of protein supplements with the convenience of home delivery.
Brand Websites: Purchasing directly from the brand’s official website ensures product authenticity and quality.
Exploring Protein Supplements in Dubai
Considering protein supplements in Dubai can broaden your options and help you find the best products and deals. Here are some tips for exploring protein supplements in both cities:
Availability
Dubai’s larger market often has a wider variety of protein supplements available. If you can’t find a specific product in Abu Dhabi, it might be available in Dubai.
Price Comparison
Prices can vary between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Comparing prices between the two cities can help you find more affordable options.
Tips for Effective Use of Protein Supplements
To get the most out of your protein supplements, follow these tips:
Consistent Timing: Take your protein supplement at the same time each day to establish a routine. Post-workout is often the most effective time for muscle recovery.
Pair with Balanced Meals: Incorporate your protein supplement into a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help with digestion and absorption of protein.
Follow Recommended Dosage: Stick to the recommended serving size on the label or as advised by your healthcare provider to avoid potential side effects.

yeah like what the actual fuck? what is people’s end game in deciding to tell people that It Has Been Decided that a neutral aesthetic choice they made about their appearance - one that can take years to reverse btw - is a Branding of Hatred you should be ashamed of, actually.
and why do the verboten haircuts just so happen to basically encompass anything a busy woman with >2b hair might choose to adopt if she didn’t want to spend loads of time on hair maintenance but wasn’t quite confident/desirous of presenting GNC enough for something short short?
like re that video game post i was snarking at. i am particularly incensed that we now apparently think that it’s okay to go back to the good ol’ ‘god, how dare a woman who looks over 30 exist in public without apologising for it?’ canard, only now we imply that she’s a bigot and this makes it Okay Somehow

Many "transbians" and "gay transmen" are bi (like both sexes but "same gender"), many are hsts (the tw that only like tw, and t4t transmen). Anybody that's going to deride that group inevitably is going to end up targeting some of the lgb you supposedly are empathizing with, esp if you dont know of this fact because you're too busy branding them all str8 (=an easy target to complain), instead of taking the time to read abt their experiences which would take more effort and doesnt interest you
And we should target them. Wanna know why?
A trans woman dating a trans woman will probably call themselves lesbians. A trans man dating a trans man will probably call themselves gay men. That's harmful to lgb people. No male should call his relationship lesbian. No female should call her relationship gay.
I also push back against conservatives. Are you going to tell me I shouldn't push back against harmful conservative rhetoric just because some conservatives are gay people?
Then why are you going so hard for gay people pushing harmful trans rhetoric?
Who cares if they're gay or bi? That makes it worse. That means they understand same-sex attraction and the ramifications of experiencing it, and yet they still choose to push harmful "genital preference" and "same gender attraction" bullshit.
I'd argue that bisexual trans people are the worst proponents of this nonsense because I can see how a bi person would genuinely not understand attraction to only one sex.
For the record, I have read their experiences and it comes down to literally three things:
1. A tragic case of a gay person not feeling like they can be gnc and thus they simply have to transition
2. A person with genuine gender dysphoria who just lives their life without bothering anyone. Doesn't claim to be the opposite sex. Doesn't claim to be a sexuality that they're not. Takes hrt and doesn't spout harmful rhetoric.
3. A straight girl who has flicked her bean too hard to gay porn. A straight man with either a lesbian or sissy fetish.
You wanna know what's really no empathy? Watching silently as your fellow lgb members can no longer talk about their exclusive same sex attraction. Watching as people say shit like "lesbians can have dicks" and "gay men can have pussy". Watching as people say "I'm a lesbian who likes dick" and not thinking about how fucked up that is. Watching as gay people get kicked out of their friend groups for stating basic facts.
Watching and doing not a single damn thing about it.
Don't talk to me about empathy. If you hit a dog long enough, eventually it'll bare its teeth at the mere sight of you.
I'm not going to apologize for the push back against this gender nonsense when it's clear we should've pushed back harder and sooner.

isn't @kulpreetvirdi on twitter running the whole ac sisterhood as a leader? and what's your opinion about her?
Well now that I got your ask, I went in her profile to check how she handles the situation like a real Hydra leader and realized I got blocked lololol. I never interacted with her so I give her the credits for at least not trying to slide into my DMs for...recruitments and after I declined twice, shit talking me for using mods (while dropping heart eye and heart emojis at naked Bayek pics) or calling me a cow. Gotta count my blessings here anon, lol. Actually, she did repost one of my Kassandra shots without credit, but iirc she doesn’t really credit where she gets most of the art/concept art she reposts from, unless it’s the Cisterhood logo.
As a leader, instead of choosing to address and clarify the conflict that is going on, she chooses to deflect and distract, which is practically what all of them do tbh. It’s in the Ubisoft playbook, look at how Ubisoft handled the situation last summer, and you’ll see the same circus. The thing is a simple statement like idk “Sorry the shit we say was sexist af towards gnc, queer women, we didn’t mean any harm” would more than suffice. Let’s see what she did do, I base this on my memories because I’m not gonna waste my time using incognito to check, I have better things to do, like picking my nose. Anyway, after concerns were raised, she released that flirting article as an example to highlight the “real cause” to assert the movement’s goals, along with “stop fighting and look at the bigger goal” tweet (cis, see what I did there, you can’t just tell people to stop fighting without actual mediation). Distraction? Check! Like “At Ubisoft, equality and employee wellbeing are our core values” or sth like that. Next is deflection, which is the whole “our leaders and members block you, but that doesn’t mean the movement is against you”, disassociating your personal actions from Ubisoft’s brand, check! Like “At Ubisoft, the actions of a fEW employees don’t reflect the company as a whole” deal. I don’t recall seeing her saying anything publicly or directly in the “Kassandra and Eivor are men’s skins for being built like a man, wearing men’s armors, walking like a man and that is disrespectful to women” convo, but seeing how her followers being the way they are, thinking Ubisoft is behind their back so they can do anything (which, they’re probably right), she is complacent with them. Meanwhile, her minions doing DMs to damage control. If your movement is so noble, why don’t you just release a public statement addressing the conflict once and be done with it? What kinda movement that you need to DM people to explain wym as leaders/supporters and then going around with a disclaimer that your personal opinion doesn’t reflect the movement? Is this a religion that they need to go door to doo....OHHHH!!!! Like I said before, this whole thing is just for them to solidify their followers base since they got a good bunch during their recruitment phase. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for their lore police to tell me which in-game quests/dialogues that get them to say the sexist shit that they say.
#Cisterhood#AC Sisterhood#ask#anon#I'm not gonna repeat what I said before#so check my Cisterhood tag for the discourse#I don't have time for 1-on-1 evangelizing#misogynistic feminists

hi. hello. i've only been following you for a short while, so apologies if there's already a post about it somewhere on your blog, but would you be willing to expand on duck newton a little bit? the thing is that i'm terribly stupid and i feel like i see your point but don't know. why exactly...
Hi! There’s not one comprehensive post about it but I’m more than happy to make this one it. And don’t beat yourself up!! I think some of this does come from “I am a trans man and his experience resonates with me” and personally, I think that being an argument for identifying someone as gay/trans/queer coded is valid. But that’s not, imo, the only reason why many folks (including myself) really see Duck as a trans man. So here are a few more. Spoilers for the ending of TAZ: Amnesty ahead.
Goes by a nickname & treats revealing his “actual”/proper/non-nickname name as a sign of intimacy - I think this is the most obvious one but the way that Justin plays it gives it a genuine quality that really fits with Duck being trans. I love the exchange between Duck and Aubrey where she asks for his name, he replies “Duck” and when she presses him he says “we’re not there yet” and she says “we’re not at names?!”
Names being an intimate symbol is not exclusive to trans folks, but for many of us, choosing our names is often a literal and symbolic first step towards redefining the lens through which the world sees us. This time, in a way we want to. Duck’s earnest insistence that no, he is Duck, and that’s enough, comes off as very trans. So much so, that I wasn’t sure initially how I felt about his name reveal to Minerva in the finale. But the more I sat with it, and after my Amnesty re-listen, I think it actually puts a really fine point on this.
Choosing a name for yourself is really vulnerable. From what we know about Duck’s past, it really sounds like Duck has gone by Duck since he was a kid. Juno has known Duck since they were both teens, at least, and she’s always called him Duck, even in flashbacks. Duck remarks in another flashback that his mom doesn’t like the name Duck, yet he still insists on using that name. To me, it’s very easy to take a trans reading of Duck here. Duck has had clear discomfort with his birth name since he was a kid, whether or not he realized it was for a trans reason. He starts going by a nickname very early on, and later chooses a more traditionally male name (Wayne) as his legal name when he transitions. But in a sense, he was Duck before he was anything else. Revealing the secret name he chose for himself to Minerva, in this reading, just makes that an even more intimate moment.
Part of an alternative subculture as a kid - this is somewhat anecdotally based, but we know Duck was a skater and kind of a punk as a teenager when he was going through his own period of self-discovery. Alternative subcultures are often refuges for lgbt and gnc folks as teens, because they can be safe spaces for alternate gender expression. For me, being part of the pop punk/emo subculture as a kid gave me a lot more freedom to experiment with gender neutral and masculine gender presentation. I see Duck’s past as a skater and a punk a good parallel for this. We also know that Duck had kind of a fraught adolescence, and this was an outlet for him. I think this reading is even stronger when you consider him as a trans character, trying on the identities of different subcultures in parallel to understanding his own gender identity. His character arc redefining his identity as the chosen one is a genuinely great parallel for the trans gender euphoria, self acceptance, and taking an active role in reshaping one’s identity - this is absolutely my favorite one. Duck’s literal journey as the chosen one works really well as a metaphorical trans narrative, and I honestly think it strengthens his character arc to read him as a trans character redefining what it means to be the chosen one. Duck is caught between who he is as part of the Kepler community and who he is as the chosen one in an interstellar war. And his character arc is finding what it means to be all of these things and also Duck. From a young age, Duck is told he’s the chosen one, and his whole life is redefined in front of him. He’s very resistant to accepting this fact. What will this mean for his family? What will this mean for him and his future? What if he doesn’t want this? Why him? Who picked him? What if I don’t want all this baggage? Can I please give this to someone else? His first scene with Minerva is very reminiscent of the first moment of “wait, am I trans? What does that mean? Who am I, actually? I don’t want this.” Many trans folks, myself included, sort of know they’re trans before they know they’re trans. In our transphobic society, it’s a lot easier to just not be trans. It sort of sits there in the back of your mind, and sometimes you can ignore it, sometimes you even forget about it, but it inevitably always comes back. Because to ignore you’re trans is to ignore the truth of your life. The same thing happens to Duck and his identity as the chosen one. Minerva literally reappears to him throughout his life to remind him that he can’t run from his destiny, as much as he tries to shut her out. Duck even goes through periods of accepting “hey, maybe this chosen one thing isn’t so bad” only for something to go a bit wrong and him to completely reject it again. Minerva gives Duck Beacon, and for a moment he’s like “hey, this is kind of cool” before his destiny scares him and he falls back into what the hell am I doing and eventually gives Beacon to Ned. He shuts away a symbol of the identity he’s running from, much like a trans person might hide objects or experiences that give them gender euphoria, because to accept them is to start to accept the truth of who you are. I also like this reading because it makes Leo Tarkesian a great parallel for older trans mentors. Leo lived the life of the chosen before Duck. He’s gone through this all before and now his role is to keep Duck safe and make sure he safely comes into his own identity as the chosen one. The found family? The generational mentorship? The fact that Leo and Duck talk about the emotional weight of being chosen in a way Duck can’t really express with others? Even Minerva? Very trans. When Duck stops running from who he is he realizes he might actually like being the chosen one. When he loses his abilities, he realizes he misses them. But the solution isn’t to just become what Minerva tells him. The solution isn’t to just abandon all of his principles and values, abandon everything that makes Duck Duck and transform into the model of a chosen one. Duck won’t kill anybody. Duck chooses to make decisions with arguably worse outcomes for himself to avoid killing anybody (like saving Billy the Goatman). Duck gets to define what it means to be Duck The Chosen. He won’t settle for anything less. This, to me, is a really awesome parallel for not just accepting one’s gender but accepting oneself and your experiences of gender, and making it your own until it feels euphoric. Two other quick things that are more my opinion than textual analysis:
Duck’s brand of a softer masculinity made me feel euphoric as a trans man and it’s a kind of masculinity I see a lot of trans men aspire to have. Yes, not all trans men are masculine in this way. However, I think the gentle streak in his masculinity codes him as this type of trans man. This great thread goes into more depth on that.
Duck is characterized quite strongly as a staple of the Kepler community. He knows everybody and they all know him and they all call him Duck. It’s just, “that’s our Duck.” That’s a wonderful thing for me as a trans person, to see a community come together around accepting a trans person they’ve known all his life, and certainly known since before his transition. That just makes me happy.
This was long but I hope it helped better understand why Duck is so important to me as a trans character! Thank you for the ask. I had a lot of fun writing this up.

Feminism means equality. Equality includes everyone.
Because apparently it needs to be said, for the safety of my followers, I would prefer you to unfollow me if you identify as a TERF. I stand with my transgender and gender non-conforming followers. You deserve love, respect, and equality.
I have a lot to say about this, but I put it below the cut because I know transphobia can be a painful topic.
I want to openly and loudly reject TERFs because their version of “radical feminism” only exists to deny rights to people that they perceive to be different from them in unacceptable ways. The fact is that it takes nothing away from you, as a woman, to recognize transgender and non-gender conforming people as just as human as you are, and therefore just as deserving of rights. It costs nothing to listen to a trans/GNC person, read a book by a trans/GNC author, or otherwise seek out views that are not just going to reinforce your own thinking. Of course you can ask questions. Of course you can feel uncomfortable or confused. Of course you may not understand everything right away. It’s not transphobic to be curious, to question what you hear or read, or to own your biases. It is transphobic to outright reject someone else’s identity on the premise that you don’t understand it.
If you choose to learn more, please proceed with respect. Transgender people are more likely to experience harassment, mistreatment, discrimination, unemployment, poverty, and violence than the general population. Piling on to transphobic hate, spreading transphobic ideas without questioning them, and denying transgender people their identity only adds to these problems. Even if you personally don’t understand transgender or GNC identities yet, surely you can understand that hateful rhetoric only spurs on those who would act violently against trans and GNC individuals. At the most basic level, this is about recognizing our shared humanity. There is no reason to attack other people for their identity when you know perfectly well that they are already at risk. Oppression is not a contest.
If you are a person who believes in “radfem” ideology: I would ask you to consider whether your exclusion of this particular group from your brand of feminism comes from a place of love or a place of hate. If the answer is hate, then the beliefs you espouse are not so much beliefs as they are a complex way to justify your pre-existing hatred. Ask yourself why you believe certain people are undeserving of basic dignity and respect. Ask yourself why you’re trying to justify this inequality under the guise of “feminism.” Instead of creating false competitions for equal rights, we can all work together to understand each other and lift each other up. No one should feel like they have to justify their existence in order to be treated with respect. Consider that anyone telling you that a certain group doesn’t deserve equal rights must therefore believe that those rights are reserved only for them, as though rights are intended to be served on a silver platter only to those who are deemed “deserving.” Ask yourself if you believe that’s okay.
TLDR; Even if you can’t personally understand non-binary identities, that doesn’t invalidate them. It just means that you have more listening and learning to do. Please consider educating yourself on this issue.
I’m sure that I myself have much more learning to do here, too. I would appreciate if people could add book recommendations, articles, videos, or other information on non-binary identities. For those who are completely new to this, you could start here.

SKETCHY BEHAVIORS | INTERVIEW WITH LAUREN YS
From large scale murals to multi-layered works on canvas, LA based artist Lauren YS’s art captures everything from the female experience, addressing topics like sexuality, death, aliens, monsters, and the occult. Her works are complex much like her own experiences, so we’re super stoked to find out more about what drives her, who and what inspires her, and what challenges and advice she has for our readers in this awesome Sketchy Behaviors interview..
Take the leap!
Photographs courtesy of the artist.
Introduce yourself. Hey! I’m Lauren YS - Hmm, something you might not know … I used to play ice hockey and my favorite candy are Peach O’s. I am a really good listener, but that also means I hate being interrupted. I dream, often, about being underwater.
Tell folks a little about your artwork and what do you love to make works about? I make work about the female experience, sexuality, identity, space, aliens, heritage, death, monsters, nature, emotions, natural phenomena, the occult and whatever else I might be obsessing about. I like slimy creatures, kitsch, psychedelia, sex and Halloween, and mixing repulsion with attraction. I want the viewer to feel unsettled as much as engaged. I make things in an effort to try to process the beautiful shit rocket that is the world around me.
When did art become something you were aware you could do for a living or as a career you wanted to pursue? I have always been making art, but I never thought it was possible to support oneself as an artist: It seemed really out of reach or surreal. It wasn’t until I had already been fully freelance for a year before I realized I was actually doing it. I think it’s just something that comes out of necessity, it’s like – if I want to keep making art as much as possible at the rate I am living, then damn, I’m going to learn how to make money off of it.
What’s a typical studio day for you like? I tend to work nocturnally. I’ll paint through the night and sleep through the day and watch horror movies, listen to podcasts about art, serial killers and cults, and eat anywhere from 1-2 sacks of tangerines every day. I like to really plow through paintings as well, it’s hard for me to stop working on something once I start. After about three weeks in the studio like this, your mind starts to wander off into deep strange places, and that’s when the really good stuff comes out.
What’s your studio or creative space like? What do you keep around to constantly motivate or inspire you? I have always worked best in a bit of “artistic chaos”–I like to fill my space with odds and ends, knick-knacks, items from my travels, talismans. I believe in the power of objects. I love my lava lamp and need to buy seven more. I also have this drawing I made of an Asian grandma screaming “DRAW, MOTHERFUCKER” which I plan to make into a screen print and give to all my artist friends.
When working on a body of paintings and works for a show, what is your process like? How long does it typically take you to complete a painting from start to finish? Depending on the size of the gallery, it can take anywhere from 2-6-10 months to create a show, given that it is often punctuated by mural tours and big projects to pay the bills. I like to work on lots of pieces at the same time, so generally it’ll take a few days to a week or two to finish a piece. I am trying to get better at reworking pieces rather than just pushing through them one by one. Workflow is still sorting itself out. I also make a ton of pieces that end up being nixed from the final show. I am very prolific but also very psychotic.
Not only do you work on canvas, but you are also known for some of your amazing murals! When did you start going from painting on a regular scale to large scale works? What’s your process like for mapping out these large works? Well shucks, thank you! I started painting murals around 2013, which was a sort of natural transition because I wanted to work bigger and bigger, I wanted to travel and be in the sun and use giant machines to make my art. I actually started learning color from using spray paint. I freehand everything because I like to feel independent of projectors or machines, especially if I’m in a foreign country or don’t have time or resources.
It makes me feel empowered to be able to make big things on my own. Maybe that comes from growing up under the common experience girls have, especially asian girls, where you’re expected to be small and quiet and obedient. I have always worked in active aggression against that stereotype.
Is there a medium you’d love to get your hands on, but yet to have the chance too? And what are your go-to materials? I’d really love to learn how to use an airbrush, a la Sorayama. Outside of 2D I am dying to get back into stop motion animation. My favorite brand of spray paint is Montana Black (high pressure forever!), and I use a wide variety of acrylics and gouache in my paintings, specifically the Holbein gouaches from Japan.
What do you love about where you live, and what is the art community like in your area? I never thought I’d move to LA, but I’ve been really enjoying it here. I’m a communal living person (been in and out of communities for about 9 years) and I am lucky to have found somewhere that fits with my work ethic (intense) and social vibe (weird). I like to be able to work alone while still having people bustling around and making things all the time. It helps me to feel like I’m not dead or a total solipsist.
I’ve also found that the artists in LA–especially the female artists–have proven to be really kind, generous and welcoming. There’s a lot of room for weirdos here; it might take a while to find them, but they’re here. We also have a one-eyed cat, did I mention that?
Who are some artists you’re inspired by and have influenced you throughout the years? I’m a big fan of dark/psychedelic/erotic artists like Keiichi Tanaami, Suehiro Maruo, Sorayama and the whole Ero Guro movement. I also love Goya’s dark paintings and the sculpture work of Bernini. Some contemporary artists I’ve been into lately are Christian Rex Van Minnen, David Altmejd, Robin Francesca Williams and the fabric sculptures of Do Ho-Suh. Jamie Hewlett, Swoon, Andrew Hem, Aryz. I find that my taste changes constantly and I am always thirsty for different influences.
What’s been the most challenging part of your art career? What’s been the most rewarding? What do you do to keep the balance? Something really challenging has been learning how to trust myself while growing in the industry and balancing business, work and travel. It’s a really solid test: moving to a new city, providing for yourself, going on tour, shifting from place to place, managing gallery work and mural work, all while protecting and nurturing your own ambition and positivity, and not feed into the shitstorm of capitalism and social media past what is required of you.
The muralist life is not for the faint of heart. I would hardly say that I keep any type of “balance”–art is my life and there isn’t much room for anything else, and that’s how I like it. It is the most rewarding thing to look around and feel like you’ve created something new and good and powerful, all on your own terms. It is similarly rewarding to feel the need to level up - I enjoy feeling stressed arguably more than I enjoy feeling accomplished.
What would your dream collaboration be? What do you enjoy most about collaborations with other artists or clients? I would love to do something with Takashi Murakami and/or his gallery (Kaikai Kiki Gallery). There’s also this amazing Australian animator named Felix Colgrave whose work I’ve been obsessed with lately, I’d love to find a way to make an animated short with him! I love collaborating - especially on mural work - because it’s such a cool experience to be able to intermingle your visual world with someone else’s. Working with ONEQ in Hawaii this year was really great, she had so many suggestions and ideas from out of left field that made me rethink my own work as well. It also forces you to relinquish some control on the way you work, and reflect on the basic joys of making shit in the first place.
If you could paint a portrait of anyone living or dead, who would you choose and why? I really want to do a tripped out portrait of Yayoi Kusama or Bjork or maybe Steve Buscemi—all heroes of mine.
What’s your advice to folks who see what you do and want to pursue art as a career? I would say, go at it as hard as you possibly can! Make sure you really enjoy doing it! Not all parts of painting murals are glamorous (actually, few are) and it’s important to truly love every part of it if you’re going to commit your life to it.
This means: hustling walls, handling machinery, travel, people, logistics, finding somewhere to pee, dealing with unexpected bullshit, not complaining, being comfortable handling yourself in dangerous situations, being independent and resourceful, etc. I have reservations about artists who genuinely don’t seem to enjoy all the elements of mural painting going too deep into it. But if it’s something you love, there’s nothing better.
What are your FAVORITE Vans? I’ve been rocking the classic authentic Vans in black/burgundy as paint shoes for years now. But I also love the Sk8-Hi boys in burgundy… I never wear them because I’m too scared to get paint on them, haha!
What other artists would you love to see interviewed for Sketchy Behaviors? I’m currently really into Andrea Wan, Louise Zhang and Caratoes. It would also be really cool if you covered a GNC or trans artist, like Nomi Chi or Laughing Loone!
What’s next for you that you can share? My first book is coming out this year with Von Zos, and I’m also going to be designing a tarot deck with them. April is my first mural tour in several months; I’ll be hopping from Australia - Guam - Peru, and then moving around South America for a while, trying to practice my spanish. After that, I’ll be starting work on my next big show, scheduled for a city in Asia, which I’m really, really excited about - keep an eye out!
