Every now and then I get asked about ships, and I usually avoid the question both because I think it's obvious what will win and because "ship wars" just aren't fun. But, fine. Just this once, in honor of Valentine's Day, ~let the ship wars rage~. Hopefully no one sails too far west and triggers the sinking of NĂșmenor.

I don’t think any of us should ever overlook Celeborn’s love for Galadriel, because it’s really something.
Usually in Tolkien’s texts, it’s the girl following the guy. LĂșthien followed Beren to Tol-in-Gaurhoth and Angband and later into death itself, NĂniel followed Turambar to Cabed-en-Aras, Elwing followed EĂ€rendil to Valinor, Éowyn followed Faramir to Ithilien, Arwen followed Aragorn to Gondor and later into death itself, etc. Not that this is a bad thing, not at all. (It should never be deemed disempowering for a woman to follow a man she loves and who loves her and treats her right, if that is her choice.) But overall, considering the wide variety of couples in Middle-earth, it does get repetitive sometimes.
Yet with these two, it’s the opposite. Celeborn always followed Galadriel.
When Galadriel departed Doriath, Celeborn went with her. He left all his kin behind to be with her. We don’t know for sure how his kin reacted to his relationship with a Noldo, but it could very well be that they eloped. She was just that important to him.
Then for the next 2 ages, they endured all sorts of trials and tribulations together across Middle-earth and eventually settled down in LothlĂłrien. There, Celeborn never tried to make Galadriel subservient to him. She had as much say in how things were run as he himself did. They were true co-rulers, equals in every way.
Then finally, Celeborn temporarily let Galadriel go. He was alright with her leaving on the White Ship to see their daughter and her parents and brothers again, while he stayed behind to finish what needed to be finished. He didn’t force her to stay with him when he himself could not (yet) leave. He didn’t hold her back from reuniting with people she loved and had lost so long ago.
And ultimately, Celeborn followed Galadriel once again. Though he was a Sinda born and bred, and never before had any desire to cross the Sea, he left his own homeland behind forever to reunite with her in her homeland. She still was just that important to him.
This guy was down bad for this girl. He lived his whole life drunk on wifeguy juice. Respect Celeborn.

When Elrond stepped upon the ship that was to take him, Galadriel, Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo and a few others to Valinor he was nervous. So long had imagined what it might be like, and for some time even questioned if he would ever sail.
But here he was, stood upon their ship with the undying lands finally in sight after months of sailing across the unending ocean. He might be a mariners son but he certainly had no great love for boats, he didn’t have a problem with them, but the knowledge of not having ground beneath his feet still made him uneasy.
At their arrival many awaited them, to welcome the newcomers into the blessed lands.
High King Arafinwë, in Middle Earth better known as Finarfin, and his other children had come to welcome Galadriel.
Gandalf reunited with some old Maia friends of his and then escorted the hobbits that had joined them to a nice little cottage for them to spend their days in.
He himself recognized many of the faces in the small crowd. First he spotted Gil-Galad, who welcomed him with open arms. Then his beloved Celebrian, who pulled him into a hug the moment he saw her, she was much better now.
A few soldiers of Rivendell were there as well, happy to see their Lord again.
Elrond ended up settling in Tirion with all the others and moved into Celebrian‘s home. It was a nice house with a good view and easy access to the marked and other nearby shops and market places.
Tirion was flawless. The white towers with their pointy roofs, the elegant guards with their silver spears, the marked place with its various stalls and merchants.
He met many of his ancestors, some he got along with and some he didn’t.
The first he met was Turgon, it took half an hour for them to end up in an argument about the moralities of handling delicate situations within one‘s own city and when to help those in need.
Luckily his second meeting went much better. His great grandfather, Fingolfin, was much more sensible and they got along quickly due to their shared knowledge on leadership and experience of hardships throughout their lives. Though the late High King did comment to his wife AnairĂ« later about how he was sure he‘d bite his teeth out on Elrond eventually, comparing his stubbornness to someone else’s.
When he at last met Fingon it took the elf exactly five minutes to ask if he had been raised by Maedhros. To this day Elrond didn’t understand how he did it, for he himself wasn’t aware of the small details. Like how he did his hair exactly like the fĂ«anorian had or that he held himself with something of Valinorian regalness he definitely didn’t pick up in Lindon.
But as time went on Elrond began to realize something.
Tirion was truly perfect.
Too perfect.
Everyone seemed to have collectively decided to ignore any pains and hardships experienced in Middle Earth or Beleriand and live their lives as if everything was perfectly fine.
When bringing this up to Gil-Galad he just said that they preferred it that way, even if it wasn’t perfect, not everyone had made the journey and seen war, and those who didn’t weren’t comfortable of discussing or displaying it.
The more time Elrond spend in the white city the lonelier he felt. It seemed as if he was the only one prepared to speak of or even mention anything of the things that happened to so many of them.
The more he realized that the more he felt out of place.
Because he wasn’t perfect, he was far from it actually.
He had gone through things most couldn’t imagine in their worst nightmares and had seen horrors he wished he could forget.
He had seen his city attacked, had been kidnapped, even though that did turn out positively in the end. Had witnessed war and bloodshed from young on, had served as Herald and later taken on the mantel of Lord. He had seen so much that he just couldn’t ignore.
So one day he mounted his horse and rode out of Tirion. He didn’t have a destination or any idea where he was going but he just kept riding until he was exhausted.
When he looked up he saw a large city with high towers, but no pointy roofs were atop them, instead there stood guards. The walls weren’t made of white stone and marble but steadfast and resistant cobblestone and tall pillars.
The front guards let him in after he explained his situation, and the moment he stepped through those gates it was as if he had entered another world. No excessive jewelry was worn, but rather detailed braids and head dresses or simple circlets.
Scars of all types were openly portrayed instead of covered up and hidden as if they were sometimes to be ashamed of.
Elrond saw elves with walking sticks and missing limbs and crippled bodies. They were warriors, they were survivors, they were the ugly but real truth, and it felt so relieving too see them.
He had no idea where he had ended up in, but he already knew it was much better than Tirion.
No one was putting on a fake mask of perfection and instead just acted as they truly were.
Elrond walked through the streets, talked with some of the locals and listened to their stories.
He heard everything from ex soldiers to healers like him to guards and even some escaped thralls of Angband.
It was so much better than the flawlessly perfect white city. It wasn’t fake.
Elrond ended up in what seemed to be a throne room. At the end of it stood a elf, dressed in a long robe, his hair littered with many braids and a elegant silver hammer in hand.
His eyes were of piercing grey and his hair as black as the night, but his gaze familiarly gentle.
Elrond knew before he spoke.
Elrond knew before he looked up.
Elrond knew before he stepped closer.
Elrond knew before he even acknowledged him.
He knew where he was, and he knew he would stay.

this is something i have seen surprisingly little about, but sea-longing is a fascinating concept to me and frodo is my favorite character so i want to examine it.
sea-longing aka the unquiet of ulmo is of course what is experienced by elves when they are being called back over the sea to valinor. legolas experiences this in lotr. and sea-longing is not so much about the sea itself than it is about what awaits across it: valinor.
this obviously affects elves because they're the only ones permitted in valinor. however as we know, frodo sails there at the end of lotr, though he's not an elf, but a mortal. however i think it's very clear that frodo experiences sea-longing despite this.
in valaquenta, it's stated that ulmo loves both elves and men (of which hobbits are a branch of) and that from his horns music plays and "those to whom that music comes hear it ever after in their hearts, and longing for the sea never leaves them again." additionally, these horns are "wrought of white shell," and in "the sea-bell/frodos dreme," it states: "i walked by the sea, and there came to me, / as a star-beam on the wet sand, / a white shell like a sea-bell; / trembling it lay in my wet hand". the connection between the white shells stands out to me, as these white shells are from where ulmo's music and source of sea-longing come from. (and whether or not frodo is the author of the poem, it's undeniably about him)
now here we come to the text in lotr. in book i, chapter v, frodo's journey has barely begun, but he has a dream about the sea, and a "great desire" to see it. it's also mentioned that the sound of the sea "often" troubles his dreams, so this likely started even before this.
Tumblr media
the second time frodo dreams is when he is in the house of tom bombadil, in book i, chapter viii (first pic). while it doesn't directly mention the sea, we know the sea and valinor are connected. this is especially notable because the dream frodo has here is shown to have come true, almost word for word, at the very end of rotk when he sails to valinor (second pic, from book vi, chapter xi).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i don't have much to say about this one, but in book ii, chapter vii, frodo actually sees the sea, rather than hearing it, for the first time in galadriel's mirror:
Tumblr media
much later, when frodo believes the ring is lost and the quest has failed, he says this (book vi, chapter i):
Tumblr media
"only elves can escape. away, away out of middle-earth, far away over the sea"-- i love this line especially with the knowledge that frodo does get to "escape" over the sea, like the elves. and like the elves, he is experiencing this sea-longing, this call to the undying lands already.
i think this is all very, very interesting, because it seems that frodo's fate is sealed as someone who can't exist in middle-earth anymore rather early on in his journey. the idea that elves are the only ones permitted in valinor is also interesting because, while frodo is a mortal, he is described as having an "elvish beauty" and "elvish air," he is named an elf-friend, and he has a lifelong interest and love for elves, and knows a bit of elvish. also, arwen gives frodo the evenstar as this symbol of him being able to take her place on the ship to valinor that she forfeits. his connection to the elves, and therefore to valinor, is there from the beginning.

"The Demon" by Mikhail Lermontov, and parallels with Sauron x Galadriel
This idea was pitched to me by @leto97, and now I can't get it out of my head. Because the parallels are, indeed, mindblowing. And to a degree that might suggest the show writers actually took inspiration from this to write Galadriel and Sauron’s story in “Rings of Power”. Can this poem offer some predictions for Season 3, or Season 4?
This poem, "The Demon", is by a Russian poet and is considered a masterpiece of European Romantic poetry, tells of a Demon who falls in love with — and attempts to seduce — a Georgian princess, Tamara. Can he be redeemed by love? Will Heaven even allow it?
Full text here, or here.
1. The Repentant Demon
The somber Demon [Sauron], banished from the heights, Soared aimlessly above the sinful earth, And memories of better days gone by Kept crowding countlessly before his eyes — Those days when he, secure in light’s abode, Shone radiant, a cherub free from stain; When incandescent comets, shooting past, Would pause and lovingly reciprocate His hailing smile of fond benevolence; Those days when, through the timeless mists of space, Desiring knowledge, he would keenly track Nomadic caravans of shining stars Strewn out by God across the dark expanse; Those days when he believed — when he still loved! Divine Creation’s fortunate first-born! [Mairon, the Maia of AulĂ«] He knew no spiteful enmity, no doubt, Nor was his mind yet menaced by the thought Of barren ages in an endless train
So much, so much was his, that all of it He hadn’t strength enough to recollect!
Tumblr media
Long since expelled from Heaven, he now roamed The desert of this world, without repose; One age after another passed for him Just as the minutes pass for humankind: In an unending and unchanging stream. And in dominion o’er this paltry earth, He sowed great evil — but without delight. [corrupted by Melkor/Morgoth] For nowhere did this artistry of his Meet with resistance in the hearts of men — And he grew tired of evil’s tedium.
Tumblr media
2. First Meeting with the Princess
A great and lofty house, a sprawling court, [the raft] Did grizzled old Gudal decree be built. Much toil and many tears did that house cost [shipwreck] The long-enduring slaves who raised its walls. From dawn, its shadow creeps across the slopes Of mountains ’round the rock whereon it looms; And in that rock a staircase has been hewn, Descending from a turret to the stream; And down those stairs — a glimmer, now and then — A figure hurries, in a cloak of white: It is the princess — young Tamara [Galadriel] — who Descends to the Aragvi with her pail. [ship to Valinor]
Tumblr media
Indeed: the Demon saw her. In a flash Some agitation inexplicable Arose within him, not to be denied; The silent desolation of his soul Was filled now by a glad, salvific sound — And once again he knew the sanctity Of love, of all that’s good and beautiful! Long, long did he now linger to admireThe precious spectacle — and long-dead dreamsOf his past glory, like an endless chain.Of star strung after star strung after starProcessed before his eyes as he looked on. And, shackled by some great but unseen force, He grew acquainted with a newfound pain: For sentiment began to speak within Him — in his long-abandoned native tongue. Were all these signs but preludes of rebirth? [redemption] His menaced heart sought refuge in his mind, And scoured it for shrewd and sneering words — But no! Forgetting was forbidden him By God. Indeed, he wished not to forget!
Tumblr media
Down at the river raging far below — Here every step was fraught with threat of death! Great cliffs loomed to the left — and, to the right, The fatal torrent roared, tempestuous. [tempest at sea] It had grown late. Upon the snowy peak The blush burned out. An evening mist arose... And so the caravan picked up its pace.
Tumblr media
3. The Dead Groom [Husband]
But on this day a great feast is at hand; The zurna sounds as wine begins to flow. Soon old Gudal [Finarfin] will see his daughter wed; He bade the whole clan gather for the feast. There, on the roof, with carpets rich bespread, The young bride sits among her friends, and laughs; With carefree games and songs her wedding eve Goes by. And evening falls: from distant peaks The half-disc of the sun still spills its rays; The revelers, now clapping rhythmically, Burst out in song, and watch the lovely bride Take up her tambourine and start to dance. Behold, how with her hand so delicate She twirls the tambourine above her head — One moment fluttering just like a bird, The next she sinks, alights — and, looking round, Her moist eyes glimmer softly from beneath [...] This was the last time she would ever dance. She well imagined what the future held — Alas! — for Gudal’s heir and only child [Galadriel is Finarfin's only daughter, and only surviving child], For one as used to freedom as was she: The woeful station of a wife enslaved; A homeland, new and as of yet unknown, And equally unknown [Doriath, Middle-earth] — her husband’s kin [Celeborn, prince of Doriath] So, now and then, a surreptitious doubt Obscured the smiling features of her face; And yet her every movement, as she danced, Was so full of expression and of grace, Of effortless and sweet simplicitiy,
Tumblr media
Galadriel: Celeborn was his name. We met in a glade of flowers. I was dancing and he saw me there. Theo: You were dancing? Galadriel: The war seemed so very far away then. When he went to it, I chided him. His armor didn't fit properly. I called him a silver clam. I never saw him again after that. Rings of Power, "The Eye", 1x07
4. Demon In Love
In drops of water glistening like pearls, Upon a body beautiful as hers! Nor has the hand of any mortal man Been blessed to dance across a lover’s brow And unbraid hair as sumptuous as this. No! Never, since the loss of paradise — [the light of the lost Two Trees of Valinor shines on Galadriel's hair] I swear it! — had a flower such as she Spread wide its petals ’neath the southern sun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For lo, the Demon, clever in deceit, Did rile his fancy with a guileful dream, And in his mind, concealed by darkest night, His lips caressed the lips of his new bride.
Tumblr media
“Cry not, dear child, cry not — you cry in vain! Your precious tears will not, like living dew, Fall vivifying on that voiceless corpse: Their water will but blur your brilliant gaze, Their fire will but burn your virgin cheeks! Your groom is far away; he will not see The grief you bear, nor will he know its worth; The fleshless gaze of his transfigured eyes Is now caressed by Heaven’s blessed light; His ears now hear the songs of Paradise
What are the trifling dreams of earthly life, The moans, the tears of some unhappy girl, To one who knows undying happiness? No, no, my dear! A mortal being’s death — My earthbound angel, please believe my words! — Could never, ever be deserving of A single moment of your precious grief! [Sauron sees Galadriel's grief, and asks for her forgiveness]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. The Demon Reveals Itself
Tamara - Who are you? Oh, how dire the words you speak! Did heaven send you to me, or did hell? What do you want?
The Demon - How beautiful you are! Tamara - No, tell me who you are! Give answer, now..!
Tumblr media
The Demon: I am the one whose voice you heard before Amidst the silence of the midnight hour — The one whose thoughts were whispered to your soul, And whose unending sadness you discerned. I am the one whose form you saw in dreams; I am the one whose very gaze kills hope; I am that wretched one whom no one loves; I am the scourge of all my earthbound slaves; I am the king of knowledge — freedom, too; The enemy of heaven, nature’s bane. And now, behold — I fall upon your feet, And bring to you — you, whom I so admire — A quiet prayer of neverending love, I bring to you the first pain I have felt, The first tears I have shed upon this earth. Oh! Hear me — only out of pity! — For You must know: you could, with but a tender word, Restore me unto heaven, unto good; And, in the sacred mantle of your love Once clothed, I would in love arise anew, A newborn angel, newly radiant. Oh! Only hear me out, I pray you, please! — I am your slave — And now declare my love! The moment when I first set eyes on you, I first began to secretly despise My immortality, my evil might; Despite myself, I first came to desire The incomplete and earthly joys of men; It pained me not to live the life you know — And how I dreaded life apart from you! Thus in my bloodless heart a sudden ray Of light has broken forth, to shine, to live — While all my sorrow, deep in that old wound, Keeps stirring, like a serpent long asleep. What is eternity, without you there? What good, the boundlessness of my domain? They’re nothing, save for empty, ringing words, A sprawling church — with no divinity! Tamara: Begone, O clever spirit! Leave me be, And speak no more! I cannot trust you, friend! O Lord, Creator, hear me!
What is this? I cannot pray!
My poor deluded mind Is by some deadly venom overcome! Your words would doom me to the fires of Hell, Your words are fire and poison, nothing more... [Sauron reveals himself to Galadriel]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. The Demon Temptation (he asks the Princess to help him achieve redemption)
There is an ocean vast, ethereal, Where without rudders, without masts or sails, Drift effortlessly, through eternal mists, The graceful choirs of luminaries bright; Across the boundlessness of heaven’s fields Roam sinuous and sheep-like flocks of clouds Intangible, and leaving not a trace; The hour of parting, or reunion’s hour Means neither joy nor misery to them; For they no longing for the future know, Nor do they feel regret about the past. You too, my dear, need only think of them On days of harrowing adversity; Be too, like them, without a single care, Without concern for any earthly thing! [Sauron tempt Galadriel into joining him]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. The Demon torments the Princess
As soon as night, its somber shroud outspread, Obscures the towering Caucasian peaks, And the entire world below, bewitched By some enchanted word, falls still, And nothing moves, save for some withered grass Stirred by the wind that steals along a cliff And soon inspires a bird that shelters there To spread its wings and flutter in the dark, [Galadriel is tormented by visions of Sauron, via Nenya]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For surely you have noticed: day by day I’m wilting, victim of some poison vile! A clever spirit surely torments me With some dark dream that I cannot resist; I’m lost, my end is near — take pity, please! [Tamara tells her kin she's being tormented by a "clever spirit" and needs to escape it = Galadriel tells the same to Elrond]
Tumblr media
8. The Demon visits the Princess
While far below, beneath the vineyard vines, Insatiably imbibing heaven’s dew, A flower spreads its petals in the night — As soon, I tell you, as the golden moon Ascends the sky in silence o’er the peaks, To steal a loving glance at you, my dear... It’s then that I’ll come flying to your side, And linger with you till the morning star, And waft delightful dreams of purest gold Upon the silken lashes of your eyes...” [Sauron comes for Galadriel, at last, in Season 2]
Tumblr media
And then the wondrous voice withdrew from her, And, word by word, its music died away; Now startled, she jumps up and looks around... A painful longing, inexpressible, Now seized her breast; and nothing, next to this, Was any sadness, fear, or ecstasy: Her every passion seethed within her heart; It was as if her soul had burst its chains, And flames were coursing through her every vein — [Sauron stabs Galadriel with Morgoth's crown]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that same voice, so gloriously new, Seemed still to resonate from ear to ear. Near morning, at long last, a longed-for sleep Sank down and shut her weary, reddened eyes; But sleep too stirred her disconcerted thoughts With some uncannily prophetic dream: A visitor had come from far away, And, radiant with rays of unseen suns,
Tumblr media
He stood there, gently bowed above her bed; He stood there — and his loving gaze beheld Her with such sadness, with such tenderness — And with, it seemed, compassion most profound. This was no angel sent there from on high; No guardian ordained for her by God; No halo spun from iridescent rays Adorned the locks that ringed that handsome face. Nor yet was this some awful fiend of Hell, Enduring torment for his many sins — No, no! He looked like lucid evening — Not night, not day — not dark, not light!
Tumblr media
8. The Princess choses "death" to resist the Demon
Give up your child, bereft of sanity, To the most holy convent’s certain care, Wherein our Lord and Savior all sustains; Before His Face I’ll pour my every tear. No smiles, no joys are left me in this world
Like relics shrouded in serenity, May I too find the shelter of a cell — As of a tomb — long, long before my time
” [Galadriel jumps to her death to escape Sauron]
Tumblr media
9. The Princess is sent to a Sanctuary by her kin, to protect her from the Demon
So, to a monastery far away [future Rivendell]Her kinfolk [Elves] sorrowfully sent the girl,And there in modest clothes, from sackcloth sewn, She humbly wrapped her ever youthful breast.
Tumblr media
9. In spite of her prayers, the Demon's temptation and her desire for him still endure on her heart
But still, beneath her nun’s attire — just as It had beneath a dress of patterned gold — That same illicit, sinful fantasy Kept beating in her heart, unfadingly. Before the altar, in the candlelight; Amidst her solemn, sacred songs of praise;
Tumblr media
Amidst her prayers, the same familiar voice Would oft assail her ears with tempting words. Along the gloomy temple’s mighty vault, A shape she seemed to know would sometimes glide, Without a noise, with no trace left behind, Through clouds of incense rising weightlessly. He shone there, silent, like a star, and lured Her, called to her... Where would he have her go?
Tumblr media
What happens next in the poem? Hypothetical predictions for Season 3?
1. The Demon lingers around the sanctuary
In the poem, the Demon goes to the monastery to claim the princess. At first, he hesitates and does not dare to enter, and “violate their blessed sanctity”:
A shroud ethereal of evening mist In darkness clothes the sleeping Georgian hills. True to his custom, in the still of night, The Demon flew about the cloister walls. But for a long, long while he didn’t dare To violate their blessed sanctity. Indeed — if for a moment — he seemed poised To cast aside his merciless intent. There, lost in thought beside that lofty wall, He paced about — and where his footsteps fell, The leaves would tremble in the windless shade. Again he lifts his gaze: again he stares Into her window, where the lamp still shines: [the sun still shines?] Long has she waited, waited for someone! And then, amidst the all-embracing quiet, Some graceful fingers strum the chonguri, And suddenly a lovely song resounds; Its notes drift forth, and play without respite, As measuredly as tear falls after tear. So tender, so exquisite was the song That it might well have come here from on high, Composed in heaven for this sinful earth! How like an angel’s voice — an angel who Desired to see some long-lost friend below, And secretly descended from the clouds To sing to that dear friend of days gone by To lend some sweetness to their suffering... And thus love’s ache, love’s longing restlessness, First pierced the Demon’s heart — and, knowing now The fear that love entails, he wished to flee, To flee — and yet his wings refused to move! What miracle is this? A heavy tear Falls from his faded eyes — falls to the ground — And to this very day, outside that cell, Beneath that window, one can see a stone Burned straight through by a tear as hot as fire — By an infernal and inhuman tear!
2. The Demon's love for the Princess is too strong for him to stay away
Eventually, the Demon decides to enter the sanctuary, and confess his love for her:
He enters now — his heart prepared to love, His soul no longer shutting out the good, Believing that a long-awaited life — A new life — a new day — was now to dawn. The vague anxiety of boundless hope, The fear that lurks in mute uncertainty — These unfamiliar feelings filled his soul, These feelings known to all who have known love. Alas, they did but augur things to come!
3. The Demon fights a God's messenger to get to the Princess (and wins)
When the Demon enters the sanctuary, he discovers a "agent of God" is there, protecting the princess’s soul against him:
He enters, looks — and looming there, beholds God’s messenger, the guardian angel who Stood watch above that sinner beautiful, His brow bathed in a pure celestial light, His smile impassive, and his shining wings Protecting her from her soul’s enemy; And suddenly a ray of Heaven’s light Shone forth and smote the Demon’s unclean eyes; Where words of love might have caressed his ears, An onerous reproach now thundered forth: “O restless spirit, full of wickedness, Who called you here in midnight’s tranquil dark? There are none in this place who worship you; Nor has the breath of evil breeched these walls. Dare not transgress, dare not in sin draw near To one I hold in love and sanctity. I bid you speak: who summoned you?” To this, The evil spirit glowered in reply, His gaze now burning red with jealousy; And in his demon’s soul again was stirred That age-old poison — hatred of the good. “She’s mine!” he bellowed, with abysmal might. “Abandon her, for I have laid my claim — While you, her guardian, have come too late, And you are not to judge her, or judge me. Upon her heart, replete with sinful pride, I have already set my awful seal; There’s nothing sacred here for you to save; Here, I am master now; here I now love!” The Angel, overcome, with eyes downcast, Looked one last time upon the wretched girl, And slowly, beating high his shining wings, He rose, and plunged into a sea of light.
4. The Demon confesses his eternal love for the Princess
Coming out victorious of his fight against this “Angel of Light”, the Demon eventually gets to the princess, and confesses his eternal love for her:
Tamara - So why, why do you now profess your love? The Demon - Why do I love you, lovely girl? Alas, I do not know myself! I only know That, full of newfound life, from my vile brow I’ve finally removed my crown of thorns, And cast it — all that was — into the dust. My heaven and my hell are in your eyes; I love you with an otherworldly fire; I love you in a way you cannot love: With all the ecstasy, with all the force Of thoughts immortal, and immortal dreams. For since the world began, deep in my soul, Your captivating image was engraved; Long did that image drift, beyond my reach, Through the eternal ether’s wilderness; Long, long disquieting my every thought, The sweet name you now bear did sound to me; And in those days of bliss, in paradise, You were the only blessing that I lacked. Oh, if, poor girl, you could but understand What neverending anguish I have known! [...]
5. The Princess is conflicted: she loves the Demon but wants to be on God's side
The princess still resists the Demon, and accuses him for stealing her peace, and tormenting her, but she’s conflicted because she’s in love and wants the Demon in her heart:
Tamara - Hush, hush, someone might hear us! The Demon - We’re alone. Tamara - But God sees all! The Demon - He will not deign to look: He has eyes but for Heaven — not for earth! Tamara - And what of punishment? The fires of Hell? The Demon - What of them? You will share their flame with me! Tamara - Be who you may, my uninvited friend — You’ve robbed me of my peace forever... Yet — Poor sufferer! — I cannot help but hear Your tale of sorrow with a secret joy.  But what awaits me if your feeling’s feigned? Or what if you, concealing some deceit... Have mercy, please! What love do I deserve? Of what good is my wretched soul to you? Could I mean any more to God above Than all the girls who did not draw your eye? Alas, they too are good, and beautiful, Their chaste sheets too, like those on this nun’s bed, Were never crumpled by a mortal hand... No! You must swear a sacred oath to me... You must tell me — for you can see my tears; You can discern this sinful woman’s dreams! How could you help but strike fear in my soul? But still — you understand, you know all things, And surely you will show me charity! So, swear to me... That, from this moment forth, You do renounce all things acquired in vice — Or can it really be that there remain No oaths or promises you will not break?
6. The Demons promises to abandon his evil pursuits, if he can have the Princess' soul, for them to be together
Then, the Demon makes the ultimate love confession, in which he swears to abandon all of his evil pursuits for her, and take her to heaven, where they can be together:
The Demon - I swear to you now — by creation’s dawn, I swear to you now — by its final day, I swear by evil’s base ignominy, And by the triumph of eternal truth, And by the bitter torment of defeat, And by the short-lived dream of victory; And by the hope of seeing you again, By separation menacing anew. I swear to you now by the spirit hosts, And by the fate of demons in my thrall, And by the swords of angels passionless — Those ever-watchful enemies of mine; I swear to you by Heaven and by Hell, By all that’s holy on this earth — by you: I swear to you now by your final glance, And by the first tear that you ever shed, And by the breath of your unspiteful lips, By every ringlet of your silken locks; I swear to you by bliss, by suffering — And more than all of this: I swear by love. I now renounce my lust for cold revenge; I now renounce my every prideful thought; From this day forth, false words of flattery I will not pour, like poison, in men’s ears; My inmost wish is to be reconciled With God. I want to love, I want to pray, I want now to believe — believe in good. With this repentful tear, I’ll wipe away — Upon a brow now worthy of your love — The ashen traces left by Heaven’s fire; And may this world, in placid ignorance, Live on, and prosper — I’ll not interfere! Believe me, lovely girl! I am the first To understand you, and to know your worth. In choosing you as my most sacred prize, I choose to lay my power at your feet. But for an instant of your gift of love, I offer you all of eternity. Have faith, Tamara, in my constancy, My greatness both in evil and in love — For I, the ether’s freedom-loving son, Will transport you to realms above the stars, And you will be the empress of the sky, My sole companion, and my only love; And there — without regret, without concern — You’ll soon regard this earth for what it is: A place where no true joy is to be found, Nor any beauty that is long of life; A place of naught but sin and sin’s reward; A place where only petty passion dwells, A place that’s home to no one capable Of hating — or of loving — without fear. Or do you truly not know what it is — The momentary love of humankind? The youthful agitation of the blood? But as the days race by, the blood grows cold! Do lovers long endure when forced apart? Who can resist the lure of novelty? Who can withstand the boredom, the fatigue Of indefatigable fantasy? No! Not for you, my love, are all these things! Nor yet has cruel Fate ordained for you To waste away in these repressive walls, A slave to others’ jealous crudity, Amidst the meager-spirited and cold, Amidst false friends and outright enemies, Amidst your anxious fears and fruitless hopes, Amidst your empty and oppressive toil! No! Woefully, behind these lofty walls, You’ll not live on, your passion’s flame snuffed out, Amidst orisons, equally removed From the divine and from humanity. No, no, my lovely creature: You were meant For an entirely different kind of life; A different sort of suffering awaits, As do the depths of other, unknown joys. Abandon all your previous desires, And leave this wretched world unto its fate — And in exchange, I’ll open up for you Proud knowledge’s unplumbable abyss; A host of spirits, bound to me in thrall, I’ll cast before your feet, to serve your whim; To you, my beautiful, my love, I’ll give Maidservants magical and light as air; And for your head, from off an eastern star I’ll wrest a brilliant crown of purest gold; I’ll rob some flowers of their midnight dew, And set them in that crown like precious pearls; I’ll steal some crimson from the setting sun, And wrap it tenderly about your waist; I’ll saturate the very air you breathe With breath of flowers fragrant and pristine; And every minute I’ll caress your ears With wondrous notes of otherworldly strings; I’ll raise exquisite mansions; you will dwell In halls from turquoise and from amber wrought; I’ll swim down to the bottom of the sea, I’ll soar beyond the heavens’ highest clouds; I’ll give you all, all that the earth can give — Just love me!..
7. The Demon kisses the Princess, and takes her soul
The Demon kisses the princess and she dies.
And with that, he dared to touch His lips, aflame with an infernal fire, To hers, which trembled as they met his kiss. Her pious supplications had been met By words filled with the power to seduce; A mighty gaze now looked into her eyes, And scorched her. In the darkness of the night, He shone forth, looming high above her now, A deadly blade — yet irresistible. Alas! The evil spirit did prevail! The deadly venom of the Demon’s kiss In but an instant pierced her fragile breast. A terrible and torment-laded cry Now rent the silence of that tranquil night. That cry held everything: both love and pain, Both accusation and one final plea, A last farewell, pronounced in hopelessness — A farewell to her still-young earthly life
8. The God's messenger returns to fight the Demon for the Princess' soul.
The Demon has the princess's soul, now. But the "Angel of Light" returns to fight him. And the princess, seeing the Demon's true form, is now terrified of him, and sides with her guardian angel, instead.
Amidst a blue, ethereal expanse A holy angel sent by God above Flew onward, borne aloft by wings of gold, And bearing, in his merciful embrace, A sinful soul far from the world below. And with his mild and blessed words of hope He drove away the soul’s remaining doubts, And with his tears of love he washed from it All trace of misdeed, and of suffering. And from afar, the songs of paradise Already reached their ears — when suddenly, Abruptly cutting off the path ahead, A hellish spirit rose from the abyss, As savage as a roaring whirlwind’s rage, Yet shining like a bolt of lightning bright — And proudly, in his mad audacity, He bellowed at the angel: “She is mine!” And, holding back its terror with a prayer, Tamara’s sinful but repentant soul Pressed close against its guardian angel’s chest — For its eternal future was at stake. Again the Demon loomed before her — but, Dear God, could she have recognized him now? For how malicious had his eyes become! And how corrupted by the deathly blight Of enmity that never, ever ends! And how sepulchral was the blast of cold That issued from that dead, unmoving face! “Begone, O somber spirit of despair!” God’s mighty angel thundered in response. “You were allowed to triumph for a time, But now the time has come for God to judge, And in His judgment He is merciful; The days of tribulation now are past; As from her earthly robe of sinful flesh, She has at last been freed from evil’s chains. Know this: long have we here awaited her! For hers was one of those souls so designed To live a life that lasts but for a flash, A life of torment unendurable, A life of unattainable delight: From finest ether the Creator wove The living fabric of these precious souls; They were not fashioned for the world below, For was the world below devised for them! This weary soul has paid a cruel price For all the doubts it harbored while on earth... Above all, though, it suffered, and it loved — And Heaven’s gates stand open now — for love!” And with forbidding eyes the angel looked Once more upon the Demon come to tempt, And, with a joyous wingbeat rising high, He plunged into the radiance of heaven. The vanquished Demon could do naught but curse His dreams long-cherished  — his demented dreams! For once again he found himself alone — Alone, alone in all the universe — Without a hope — without a hope of love!
Could this, actually, play out in "Rings of Power"?
The answer is yes.
Sauron (in spiritual form or through visions, illusions or dreams) lingers around Rivendell (or Lindon), looming over Galadriel, calling for her (or something of that sort);
The Elves would somehow realize this; and Gandalf comes into the picture to help (he’s a “Angel of Light” and a “agent of God”, literally, as Maia of ManwĂ«);
Eventually, Sauron arrives, in the flesh, to take the Three Elven rings of power and claim Galadriel as his;
He fights with Gandalf (the guardian over Galadriel), and wins;
He gets to Galadriel: he wants to take her to the Unseen world, where they can be together;
Galadriel succumbs to Sauron/darkness, at last, and he takes her spirit to the Unseen world, where she sees his true form (like Mirdania in 2x04), for the first time, and realises just how evil and corrupted he truly is (no chance of redemption);
Gandalf arrives to fight Sauron in the Unseen world (because he's also from that realm, and has the power to do this), and wins.
Galadriel realises her mistake, and terrified of Sauron's true form, sides with Gandalf/The Light.
By having Galadriel taken away from him, Sauron sinks into the depths of despair and suffering, and fully embraces pure evil as the new “Dark Lord” (forges the One ring?), and in Season 4, we would see him doing the most diabolical stuff yet, in NĂșmenor (human sacrifices in worship of Morgoth to piss off the Valar).

As promised here's my comparison post about how similar the Haladriel (Sauron/Galadriel) and Hùra/Wulf ships are from the LOTR projects "The Rings of Power" and "The War of the Rohirrim". 😀 I loved the movie and totally rec it and am a fan of ROP, and now ship both of these ships. I figured they would be alike, but it was even more than I thought. Putting most of this behind a cut for spoilers for both and length but will say again like I did in my review post that Hùra & Wulf both by themselves and their relationship felt like how we've written a lot of 1st Age fics about Galadriel & Sauron back when they were Artanis & Mairon and during The War of Wrath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To start with the characters themselves, HĂšra is very similar to how Galadriel was in the 1st Age and the beginning of ROP as she was a princess named Artanis and the only daughter of one of the Nolder elves.
Also with their costumes she wears mostly green, white, and gold, while he wears dark colors. They also look somewhat like the actors on ROP, especially Wulf with Sauron's Halbrand form.
Like Galadriel, she also has 2 older brothers: Haleth, the heir to the throne and a warrior like their father, and Hama, a musician. Galadriel's oldest brother Finrod was actually similar to both of HĂšra's brothers.
HĂšra's father Helm Hammerhand is the King of Rohan, similar to how Galadriel's father is one of the elvish kings in Valinor. Helm also notices how his daughter is very head strong and more like her brothers, and grows to respect that. One of Galadriel's older names Nerwen means "man maiden" and she was described as being the same, athletic (both projects have them climbing icy mountains), and excellent with horses.
The people of Rohan are descended from the NĂșmenĂłreans which this movie seems to suggest they've inherited things from Elros, Elrond's twin brother who were part man, elf, and Maiar. Helm and Haleth seem to have superstrength, Hama is not only a skilled musician but archer, and HĂšra's own character, warrior like nature, and personality came across more elvish to me too and she ends up being able to get help from the eagles.
Now with Wulf he's from the wild men that lived on Middle Earth before the NĂșmenĂłreans came, or the Southlanders as they called them in ROP. He, as well as Haleth and a few other characters have the same accent Halbrand has, or Northern English.
Because of this Wulf and his people are made to feel less than, which is why Wulf's father Freca partly wanted to marry Wulf and HĂšra to unite their peoples (but Freca also wanted to take over).
This difference is also pointed out because Helm was going to marry off HĂšra to a prince from Gondor, which not only angered Wulf and his father, but HĂšra herself as she had no idea of it. Reminded me of how Galadriel's husband Celeborn is a prince from Doraith.
Wulf's also influenced first by his father and then General Targ to seek vengeance, which twists him similar to Sauron when he was Mairon and turning his back on the Valar to follow Morgoth.
Unlike Sauron though Wulf actually tells HĂšra that he loves her multiple times. He's been in love with her since they were kids, so it started from a natural and good place but sadly it turns toxic as he gets eviler.
Like the elves too HĂšra comes across as being asexual, likely demisexual, which a lot of the elves, Maiar, and Valar seem to fit that. They usually only fall in love once or twice, and some even decide to never marry. I feel HĂšra fits into this as I feel she did care for Wulf, especially how he used to be and with her trying to find him when he disappeared. I do feel if what happened between their fathers never happened, which started Wulf's downward spiral and the war, that their childhood friendship would've turned into love. He already loves her, and I feel with time she would've realized she loves him too. Sadly, it just never happened.
At one point Wulf kidnaps HĂšra and proposes to her a 2nd time, similar to how we thought a scene with Haladriel was going to happen. She pretends to accept at first (similar to Galadriel in the season 2 finale with Nenya) but then Wulf realizes she's lying and cuts her on the face with his sword. She actually accidentally cut him on the face when they were kids and he claimed it marked him for her, so he left a mark on her too. This also happened with the crown wound in the season 2 finale with Haladriel.
After the cut and fight HĂšra jumps out of the building similar to Galadriel jumping off the cliff. Wulf lets her go for now knowing they'll battle again soon.
Sadly, like Galadriel both of her brothers are killed by Wulf and his men. Galadriel's brothers all died during The War of Wrath by Sauron and his forces. Unlike Wulf, Sauron actually apologized for it in season 1.
Then the final fight at the renamed Helm's deep HĂšra saves the people of Rohan by going out to face Wulf alone knowing he'll only be focused on her. Galadriel also helped the people of Eregion escape before facing Sauron in the s2 finale.
During this fight (which is pictured above) she wears an old wedding dress which angers Wulf as he mentions it was supposed to be them marrying instead of fighting. Reminded me of how in the show ROP we see Nenya as being the engagement ring Sauron (with Celebrimbor's help) made for Galadriel and she keeps it. Wulf is also wearing her father's crown, like how Sauron had Morgoth's crown in the show.
Then the line she says when Wulf asks her who she's marrying then if it's not him and she replies "Death". LOL Obviously Galadriel still ends up with Celeborn but that line was fantastic as I could see her saying it too to Sauron.
There's a moment in the fight too where it looks like Wulf is going to surrender and become prisoner. You can tell this is the ending HĂšra wants as she still cares for him and hopes he can repent and redeem himself. Sadly, he tricks her and it's clear he's gotten rid of his goodness and only death can stop him.
After he dies you can see her sadness at losing him too along with almost all her family. Now for Sauron we know there was a chance he could still be redeemed after everything with him and Galadriel being immortal and that Tolkien was going to write Morgoth coming back in Dagor Dagorwrath. They all were supposed to unite to defeat Morgoth for the final time. So, there's always a hope that Sauron will be redeemed and that there's still a chance there for him and Galadriel, unlike here where both characters will die human deaths with unknown afterlife fates.
The ending too had a slight similarity as Gandalf contacts HĂšra, now a shieldmaiden in her cousin's kingdom, to help assist him as she saw two orcs looking for rings for Sauron. So, it was a nice connection there and I love that HĂšra is involved in the War of the Ring somewhat, which leaves it open a bit that she could be included in future projects for either anime or the live-action movies, and what we're seeing the show play out too.

MĂriel's trajectory in The Rings of Power
This analysis, like Elrond's, will not be about a dynamic, but about the life and trajectory of MĂriel, the last legitimate Queen of NĂșmenor.
And to understand who MĂriel was, what motivated her to follow Galadriel to Middle-earth and how she will reach her bitter end, let's analyze what MĂriel's life was like, and even more importantly, how NĂșmenor came to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When EĂ€rendil came to Valinor and asked the Valar for help in the war against Morgoth, Men fought alongside the Gods and Elves. These Men, brave and courageous, were rewarded for their help, for their countless years of suffering.
An island, they were given. Prosperous, immense, full of animals, of nature, of everything most prosperous that the Valar could grant to Men. There, they would find peace and live far from the Shadow and the malice of Middle-earth, which did not disappear with the imprisonment of Morgoth.
In NĂșmenor, the days of Men would be good and joyful. They would know no pain or suffering. The people of NĂșmenor became more like the Elves. Long life was granted to them, and their deaths would not be painful or distressing.
When their bodies grew weary after long years of living, they would cast off their bodies to find peace. But long life is not immortality, and as the years passed, what had seemed a blessing brought anguish to the hearts of the Men of NĂșmenor.
While some Elves left for Valinor, others remained in Middle-earth. Elros, Elrond's twin brother, chose his human half. Elros became the first king of NĂșmenor, and they called him Tar-Minyatur.
Tar-Minyatur was the first king, but not the last, and his reign was long. Peace was in NĂșmenor for many years, and Men and Elves maintained friendship.
Of the Elves, Men gained great learning and knowledge, and were nearest to them in Wisdom and Beauty, and were considered almost gods by the Low Men of Middle-earth.
But the people of NĂșmenor loved the Sea above all things, and they became great seafarers, and their greed grew. The Men of NĂșmenor began to desire more, to sail farther, to visit more Middle-earth.
Far from the horrors of Middle-earth, the shadow began to weigh heavily on their hearts. NĂșmenor seemed too small for them, and as time went on, the friendship between Men and Elves came to an end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is in the Second Age that we meet Tar-MĂriel, Queen Regent of NĂșmenor, daughter of Tar-Palantir. But who was Tar-Palantir? To understand his daughter, we need to know her father. Tar-Palantir was the twenty-fourth king of NĂșmenor.
And unlike his father, Ar-GimilzĂŽr, Tar-Palantir loved the Elves, as he was taught by his mother. Many kings before Palantir were estranged from the Valar. Tar-Palantir wished to return to the old ways. He was known as a great seer, and he alone foresaw the future of the White Tree of NĂșmenor, Nimloth.
It is during this period that we meet MĂriel. When Captain Elendil arrives in NĂșmenor, accompanied by Galadriel and Halbrand, MĂriel is surrounded by her court. From a distance, MĂriel may appear to be a cold and distant queen, contrary to elven customs.
Behind this mask, however, lies another MĂriel. Galadriel's arrival in her kingdom is an unexpected attack. MĂriel was chosen to rule NĂșmenor in place of her father, but Tar-Palantir's ideas disgusted the people and to quell the revolt, his daughter assumed the throne.
Alongside MĂriel, we find PharazĂŽn, her cousin and faithful advisor. In the books, it is reported that in the beginning, MĂriel was in love with him, but I firmly believe that this context does not exist in the show.
Returning, Galadriel, unknowingly, threatens MĂriel's rule. Once Galadriel demands a ship and soldiers, believing that Men owe something to the Elves, for having obtained the Island of NĂșmenor. But, as Queen MĂriel said, they owed nothing.
At the end of the First Age, Men fought for the destruction of Melkor, they deserved their Island and all its gifts. Galadriel was too consumed by her pride to think about it. And MĂriel, obviously, was on the defensive. Her reign was on a tightrope, and an Elf demanding in her court was dangerous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Convinced by the Great Deceiver, Halbrand and Galadriel will remain in NĂșmenor, but under guard. I really like the scene with Elendil and MĂriel. When MĂriel says:
"The Faithful believe that when the petals of the white tree fall, it's no idle thing, but the very tears of the Valar themselves, a living reminder that their eyes and their judgment are ever upon us."
And there were petals already fallen on the ground around the tree. I believe that this moment between MĂriel and Elendil was the most honest MĂriel has felt in a long time. There is a great weight on her shoulders, the weight of the truth she hides.
Because like her father, she is not an enemy of the Elves, but she fears the destruction of NĂșmenor. Her father foresaw the future of NĂșmenor and confided it to his daughter, and only she knew it. A very heavy weight to bear.
When Elendil helped Galadriel, I imagine that MĂriel felt that she had finally found an ally after so long. Someone who, like her, does not hate the Elves, but keeps it a secret. And she chooses Elendil, of all people, to help her.
In my opinion, MĂriel is always tense, rigid, afraid that someone might discover her secrets. This becomes obvious at the end of the episode, when we find MĂriel sneaking around the castle of NĂșmenor. After being forced to hand over the throne to his daughter, Palantir, was imprisoned at the top of the Tower, far from everyone on the island.
MĂriel is apparently one of the few allowed to be in the king's presence. MĂriel's words to the king are interesting. Galadriel's arrival was not unexpected, but rather untimely. Her arrival proved that the terrible end of NĂșmenor would come to pass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In her dream, MĂriel relives the vision granted by the PalantĂr. The end of NĂșmenor never changed, no matter how hard MĂriel tried. And while MĂriel is in the Tower with her father, tormented by the vision, PharazĂŽn is quelling the revolt of the people of NĂșmenor.
Not because he wants to help MĂriel, not because he trusts her decision, but to increase his influence. While PharazĂŽn calms the people, MĂriel is seen with an Elf-Friend, a dangerous position for a queen of NĂșmenor.
And now we find Galadriel confronting MĂriel. After gathering information about the Symbol branded by Sauron on her brother, Galadriel returns to speak to MĂriel and tell her of her discoveries.
However, the Galadriel of the first season is far from being good at talking. She is as proud as when she faced Gil-galad's sovereignty, but she is also desperate. Because Galadriel's internal struggle, for her, must be everyone's struggle.
She demands that MĂriel fight by her side, that she save the people of Middle-earth and put an end to Sauron's power. Was it worth taking so many risks? For MĂriel, probably not. Her reign was not entirely legitimate, not while her father was alive.
And Galadriel loses all her chances when she throws this truth at MĂriel. Her greatest fear, her greatest insecurity. Because the others cannot know about her father's health. And if the people revolted again? Too many risks.
To avoid a revolt, and because of Galadriel's insolence, MĂriel was right to arrest Galadriel. But Galadriel never knew when to stop, never knew when to stop demanding things that were not her right.
It was indeed absurd for Galadriel not believe that the king would go against his own daughter to help her in her mission. Galadriel spent a long time hunting Sauron to remember how a royal court worked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Galadriel finally realizes the king's condition, she finally calms down. I believe that recognizing how much MĂriel needed to be strong to contain a revolt on the island, made Galadriel feel ashamed of her arrogance.
MĂriel maintains her firm stance, stating that Galadriel will be sent away, but it is her father's calls that soften her. She may be the strong queen of NĂșmenor, but here, alone, she is just a daughter worried about her father.
Galadriel questions her about her refusal to follow the ancient traditions and MĂriel is honest once again. She tells how the vision harmed him, how he believed that the Valar would condemn them if they did not return to the old ways. This revolted the people and MĂriel was chosen to contain the storm.
A fragile position, easily taken. She kept the vision a secret, hiding the destruction of the island from everyone. It must have cost MĂriel a great deal to tell Galadriel the truth, to let her contemplate the haunting vision.
MĂriel and Galadriel seem to understand each other in this scene, two lonely women who have long been fighting a silent war, a war where no one else would stand by them. And MĂriel cannot risk everything, not for Galadriel.
The people are glad that Galadriel is gone. Halbrand does not matter to them, since they believe he is only a mortal. For the people of NĂșmenor, the Elf's departure would bring peace once more.
PharazĂŽn and MĂriel watch Galadriel's departure, but this is the point of no return for MĂriel. Because she can pretend to NĂșmenor that she does not trust the Elves, that she does not believe in the old traditions, but she is her father's daughter and her belief cannot be changed.
When the petals of Nimloth fall, MĂriel knows that the path of NĂșmenor's destruction is by the Elves, but because of the distance between Men and Elves.
There are many meanings in the exchange of glances between MĂriel and PharazĂŽn. She believes in the judgment of the Valar, and to my mind, his gaze is skeptical, but he is tense, because he understands what his cousin has decided, and he cannot go against the queen, not directly.
MĂriel's speech is strong, powerful and full of bravery. She will not send her people to war in her name, she will fight by her side to protect the people of Middle-earth. A grandiose action for a queen to take. To me, this demonstrates MĂriel's strength and kindness. She is brave enough to fight alongside her people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reunited with Halbrand and Galadriel, MĂriel investigates the Enemies' advances in Middle-earth. But, once again, Galadriel is forcing the decisions of others without realizing it. Which worries MĂriel.
MĂriel risked a lot to help Halbrand, to help Galadriel. Her weakened position in the kingdom became even more unstable when she decided to help an Elf. She needs Halbrand to actually be present on the mission, or everything could go wrong.
MĂriel leaves it up to the two of them to decide how to proceed, encouraging Galadriel to make things right with Halbrand. In the Tower, with the king, MĂriel tries to calm her father. After all, he has achieved what he always wanted, peace and friendship with the Elves. But there is a darkness in MĂriel's destiny. A destiny that only he can see.
Darkness awaits her in Middle-earth. But it is too late to turn back, MĂriel has no choice. She trusted her father in helping Galadriel, but now she is unsure of what to do.
As the people of NĂșmenor prepare to leave, their ships are attacked. The people are discontented, many fearing the departure for Middle-earth. PharazĂŽn tries to convince MĂriel one last time, but she trusts, whether by choice or not, Galadriel and follows the Elf's advice, as long as she keeps Halbrand in line.
With Halbrand present, they are ready to leave. It is like the pride before the fall, is it not? All of NĂșmenor is happy, excited about the departure. Love, however, can turn to hate just as easily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What the people of NĂșmenor did not know was that they were not going to seek Sauron, the Great Enemy, the Follower of Morgoth, because Sauron was already among them. All along.
Adar is a new enemy, totally different, one they never thought they would fight. Meanwhile, without knowing what awaits them, MĂriel and the warriors of NĂșmenor are arriving in Middle-earth, and it will take time to find the army of Adar.
Their arrival saves the people of Middle-earth, they would not be able to fight for much longer against the forces of Adar. Even more so because MĂriel brought her soldiers, strong men capable of fighting Orcs, not ordinary people who just hoped to survive.
Proving her strength, MĂriel leads the soldiers as they fight for Middle-earth. It is not a difficult fight, they still have the advantage. And Miriel is happy to help all those people, she truly believes that this will save them all, that with it, NĂșmenor will be safe.
And for Miriel, delivering Halbrand to the people of Middle-earth is a good thing, because they will finally have the king they have been waiting for. And with Miriel's blessing, they quickly believe in Halbrand and his lineage. After all, he lied to everyone.
Sauron is not the only enemy. And MĂriel never thought that after the capture of the Orcs and Adar, they would be in danger. The awakening of the mountain scatters the queen's forces and many are lost in the world of darkness and fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MĂriel is not only a queen, but a great leader, a great warrior. When she sees that her people need help, she wastes no time and goes to fight, saving everyone she can.
MĂriel, when she suffers an accident, is deprived of her sight. Once again, she recognizes her fragile position. Not even in her most vulnerable moment can she show weakness, show that she needs help.
She leaves as best she can, accompanying the survivors of NĂșmenor and Middle-earth, all wounded and hopeless. Elendil is always very good at breaking down MĂriel's barriers. When he asks about what she sees, I think it was too much for her. She was strong, but it was another heavy weight for her to carry. So she asks him to keep going.
When everyone is safe in the camp, she no longer needs to pretend. Yes, a blind queen was a vulnerable queen, but did that erase all of MĂriel's strength? A setback did not diminish his strength, just as the loss of an arm did not make Maedhros any less powerful.
MĂriel’s strength knows no bounds. Because she is not lying or trying to convince Galadriel, she is being honest. NĂșmenor may have suffered losses, but they will not give up.
They will not let their enemies destroy all that is good and pure that remains in Arda. She will fight, as her ancestors fought, she will fight for the freedom of the people of Middle-earth, as the founders of NĂșmenor once fought. Is MĂriel's loss of sight the darkness her father foresaw? Or all the darkness that will come to dominate NĂșmenor by her choice?
Back at sea, heading towards NĂșmenor, MĂriel is trying her best. She may be without her sight, but she will not be vulnerable, she will not let others deceive her.
She will not even accept help. Elendil, perhaps, is the only one she trusts now. But she feels guilty, because he lost his son, because of her, because of her mission.
The loss of Elendil is hard, but his loyalty to the queen is unshakable, and MĂriel leans on him, because she trusts him. Because she desperately needs friends, allies. And Elendil is true.
Was it at that moment that everything changed? Maybe. Now, MĂriel was not only the queen of NĂșmenor to Elendil, but a new feeling arose through the loss, the war, the suffering they shared together.
And returning to NĂșmenor is uncertain. MĂriel will have to bear all the consequences of the war, of all the deaths. But the worst part is that she is alone, because she doesn't know that her loss was even greater.
There's one thing I think about a lot when I watch the first episode of season two. When the people of Middle-earth were leaving in search of a better place, it seemed like they were talking about NĂșmenor. And I wonder what Halbrand's arrival in NĂșmenor would have been like (if they hadn't been attacked, of course) without Galadriel's presence. Everything could have been so different. There are so many possibilities. And before I start analyzing season two, I have to be honest. I was furious with how little NĂșmenor was involved in this season. NĂșmenor will be of great importance in the course of the series, and they simply threw its development aside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since MĂriel's arrival in NĂșmenor, many things have happened in Middle-earth. But the people of NĂșmenor do not know that Sauron has returned, that he is forging Rings and deceiving the Elves. The problems of Men are different.
MĂriel's situation in NĂșmenor is not at all favorable. She returned with half of her people, many perishing in Middle-earth, dying horrible deaths and their bodies could not be rescued and taken to their families.
The king, her father, died while she was away. And above all, the people were furious with her. All the odds were against her. Which made everything easier for her enemies.
It is in NĂșmenor that MĂriel realizes that her situation has changed. She is no longer the queen who keeps the peace, pushing aside the old customs, but rather the queen who caused countless deaths.
At her father's funeral, her doubts begin. Nobles, men of power, all are very close to Pharazîn. Some even think he should rule in Míriel’s place. The people’s anger seems very good for him.
But MĂriel still has Elendil. He is her eyes and ears, and he keeps her informed of the intrigues of the court. It is a beautiful scene, when MĂriel comforts her grieving mother.
Grief is a difficult thing, ugly to deal with, ugly to feel. Often angry. And MĂriel understands this. She is not angry about the mother, she feels sympathy. She wants to erase her pain, and that is what connects her to her people. She does not rule by fear, but by love and strength.
I was uncomfortable with the way PharazĂŽn took advantage of MĂriel's limitations, and I believe that was the intention of the producers. He sees her as vulnerable, unable to see everything around her, and that is good for him.
But he does not deceive MĂriel and she refuses to show him what she has hidden. The conversation, the choice of clothing, in my opinion, proved PharazĂŽn's intentions towards MĂriel. She chose white, obviously this motivated him to wear red. This contrast is present for all the nobles of NĂșmenor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It must have been desperate for MĂriel not to find her PalantĂr. The enemies were inside the castle, not just the outside people. Did she suspect her cousin? Maybe. But I doubt she suspected Elendil's daughter.
The coronation seemed more like a play created by PharazĂŽn. And MĂriel was the main attraction without her knowing it. When she stares at him, blindly, wearing her white dress, while he wears red, she perfectly represents the future sides of NĂșmenor. The faithful and the King's Men.
MĂriel positioned herself with grace and power against those who want her downfall, against those who want her to give up the crown. EĂ€rien is the change, the storm, what will define the Fall of NĂșmenor.
Because they expose MĂriel as an Elf-loving queen, a follower of the old ways. This is the spark that her cousin's supporters have been waiting for. Did EĂ€rien ever imagine that she would play a part in the Downfall of NĂșmenor? Probably not.
Chaos ensues at the coronation, until the arrival of the Eagle. Proof that the Valar were choosing MĂriel, but PharazĂŽn uses this as a power play, his way of getting the better of his cousin. He is imposing, a man, and beloved by the people. He knows that MĂriel has no chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the Scepter has passed to another hand, MĂriel is confined to her Tower. Just as her father was before. It is ironic, how the people of NĂșmenor, who consider themselves superior and wiser than the Men of Middle-earth, continued to act like the followers of Morgoth.
It is a sad end. To be a great queen, to fight alongside her people, and to be imprisoned as an invalid, as a threat. It is PharazĂŽn's way of showing his strength, his power. To show how he has MĂriel in his hands.
Elendil is one of the few faithful to her, while her daughter uses her pain as a mechanism for revenge. Alone in her Tower, MĂriel is visited by Elendil. She talks about how the people call for PharazĂŽn, how they easily accepted him as king.
Elendil does not agree with her, there are still faithful clamoring for their queen. When he says that MĂriel has opened his heart to the faithful, I wonder if she has not opened his heart completely.
When Elendil tells his vision in the PalantĂr, that's when MĂriel gives up fighting. Because for her, her defeat would be the salvation of NĂșmenor, the last chance for her people to survive.
So she begs Elendil not to fight for her, not to harm the future of her people. But she does not know what NĂșmenor will be like without her power, without her leadership.
Because all the men of the Sea Guard must abandon their posts if they remain faithful to MĂriel. Because the king's men, with Kemen, have destroyed the altar of the faithful, destroyed the statue of Nienna. MĂriel has always been NĂșmenor's only salvation. And by choosing to give up MĂriel, the people of NĂșmenor have doomed themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know that Tolkien's universe is not focused on romantic love, but I like to think that Elendil was in love with MĂriel. PharazĂŽn gave him a choice, he would be free if he chose him over MĂriel. But Elendil is not capable of doing that.
And despite being deeply angry with MĂriel (caused by pain) EĂ€rien knew, deep down, that Elendil would only listen to MĂriel's words. So she begs, and asks that MĂriel be allowed to visit Elendil.
Elendil remains firm in his decision, he is incapable of betraying MĂriel. But she is desperate, because she wants to save him. It is a beautiful dynamic, because there is no need for kisses and romantic declarations, the love, the affection, is there.
Because MĂriel is crying for him, because she does not want to lose him, because she does not want him to suffer. And he prefers to die, because he cannot betray her, because he would never be against his queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MĂriel is a queen of sacrifice. She sacrificed herself by taking the throne in her father's place. She sacrificed herself by leaving for Middle-earth and fighting the forces of Adar. And she sacrificed herself again, by choosing Elendil.
It is her true sacrifice. The risk of perishing, of abandoning her people, abandoning the faithful who believed in her, who wanted her on the throne. Because she had to take this step. Take this risk.
By choosing to take Elendil's place and be judged by the Valar, MĂriel has proven herself to be a powerful queen, good, strong, and capable of feeling empathy for everyone in her kingdom. She tells Elendil that he must take the first step, if they are to save NĂșmenor through faith.
And she is choosing this path, for Elendil. She does not fear the sea, the sea is always right. She accepts judgment. And the Valar know her heart, they recognize that her intentions were never bad.
She is declared innocent, but it is not enough, not now. Those who believe in her still cry out for her, but it is difficult to fight against an entire kingdom of traitors, of liars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Elendil, NĂșmenor is lost and they must leave. Let Men follow PharazĂŽn, let them choose their own fate. But MĂriel, as a captain, will not abandon ship. She will not abandon NĂșmenor.
But she needs Elendil to guide them, to save the faithful, to protect the good people who still reside in NĂșmenor. Because NĂșmenor may be lost, but there is still hope.
MĂriel cannot leave NĂșmenor. It is her home, her kingdom, where her father reigned and died. For better or worse, she will remain. But Elendil does not have to fall with her. He must be the last hope of his people, the one who will lead them to the day of light. She presents him with Narsil, and asks him to reclaim his place of nobility with the sword.
In season two, this is MĂriel's ultimate sacrifice, as she agrees to give up her freedom for the future of NĂșmenor, so that those who remained faithful to the Valar may know freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Poppy's devastating speech, we see Queen MĂriel one last time. MĂriel, shackled, before PharazĂŽn, on his throne. But she doesn't bow, as no one does in NĂșmenor. She doesn't lower her head to PharazĂŽn.
Because he may have the Scepter of NĂșmenor, or the throne, or even the love of the people. But he cannot be greater than hope, than faith. MĂriel has a warrior spirit and it won't be PharazĂŽn and his allies who will destroy her strength.
In my opinion, it was a strong way to end the season. Even though she is imprisoned, it shows that MĂriel remains with her queenly spirit, with her unshakable strength.
And for those who have read the books, we know what awaits her, we know what her future will be like, but I'm still curious to know how her journey will be addressed.
Before the show, MĂriel didn't have much prominence in Tolkien's works. She was practically the daughter of Tar-Palantir. PharazĂŽn has always received more attention for his alliance with Sauron. But in Rings of Power, MĂriel is the true protagonist.
And I loved the development of this strong and complex character. There is so much to discover about MĂriel still and I can't wait. The actress's impeccable performance also helped, of course.
Since there were three trajectory analyses that received the most votes, I started with the one with the most votes, Elrond. Now you all have received MĂriel's. And the next and last one will be Sauron's.

8+8+8 Silmarillion Fic Recs 2024!
I was inspired by @sallysavestheday and @polutrope's recs to revisit some of the Silmarillion fandom fics I read and loved in 2024, arranged in lists of 8 long fics, 8 short fics, and 8 bite-size fics that made my year delightful. With plenty of things still on the TBR, I figured I would nonetheless share a few faves!
Fics and summaries under the cut!
Longer fics
Penumbra by @imakemywings (Maedhros/Thingol, M, 18k)
Maedhros presents himself as a diplomatic guest to Doriath, certain he can convince the king to do as Maedhros wishes him to if he only had the chance. It is possible Maedhros is less than prepared for Doriath than he expected.
This is the kind of longer fic that feels so beautifully fleshed out and lived-in to read. Thingol characterization here is INCREDIBLE as is the slow build court romance, political dynamics, and light mentor/mentee. So key to my conception of this amazing ship.
naught green upon the oak series by @welcomingdisaster (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 37k)
Maglor returns from the Bragollach. Or someone returns, anyhow.
I love this Gothic widower Maedhros so much. This CoH-inspired Maedhros/Maglor (in which much is being compartmentalized) is so dreamlike to read. Himring feels like a house in a fairytale, Maglor its lost princess. Also, really sexy.
MĂ©lamar by @buds-of-marjoram (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 40k)
Nelyafinwë doesn't have the sight, yet his dreams are filled with blood, fire and screams. Even in the peace of Valimar.
Please imagine a world where Maedhros foresees the dreadful events and moral spiral of Silm in advance, shares his misgivings with Maglor, and then the tragedy is averted by their close bond and increasingly public D/s relationship as Maedhros takes the reins of politics in Valinor to arrange the pieces on the board differently than in canon. This lavish, sexy fic brings me SO much joy.
What Blooms on Ard-Galen in the Springtime by @jouissants (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 8k)
The grasses and flowers sleep beneath a blanket of white feet thick. When spring comes and Maglor walks among them again, all will be different.
I could not resist the chance to rec Maglor lady-lord of Himring of my heart. This accidental pregnancy AU is so gorgeous and tender. Maglor doubting Maedhros' valuing of him and then it being so plainly affirmed and reaffirmed heals me. Please also read jouissants' absolutely epic postcanon Strange Currencies, which I can't say enough about!!
The Worst Are Full of Passionate Intensity by steadfastalysanne2022 / @last-capy-hupping (Thuringwethil/Ungoliant, E, 7k)
In which Ungoliant comes to Middle Earth, nearly slays Morgoth, and recruits a new servant within a week.
This is so incredibly hot and unhinged and such a gift to fandom femslash. Thuringwethil attracted to power and enmeshed in its hierarchies, served by others and seeking someone worthier/worthiest to serve herself, then biting off way more than she can chew with Ungoliant, is all just so good. Reading it for the first time made like my whole week.
And Love Grew by @polutrope (Maglor & Elrond & Elros, T, 23k)
As a host of survivors makes the journey from Sirion to Amon Ereb under Maglor's leadership, old bonds unravel and loyalties crumble. But from the scraps and ruins, new and unlikely bonds take shape. A story of perseverance through suffering.
This is written in such a classic and considered style--it's beautiful canonverse feelings and atmosphere. I love this story's grim yet so expressive tragic hero Maglor and very bleak (hurting me) leader Maedhros.
Kiss and Marry by @thecoolblackwaves (Celegorm/Curufin, M, 4k chapter fic)
Curvo and Tyelko get married. What could possibly go wrong with these two together?
Curufin thinks carefully and chooses a spouse: who better than Celegorm? This is such good crackfic, it had me cackling aloud to read. This isn't a ship I usually have a lot of feelings about, but the marriage premise and the hilarity/sincerity of it all really made it for me.
Laurë by Huiniel (Glaurung/Maglor, Fingon/Maedhros/Maglor, E, 29k)
Glaurung takes Maglor captive, hypnotizes him, and fucks him on a pile of gold. That's all I have.
(I love this summary, which I read via googletranslate, along with the rest of the fic--it's originally in Russian if you prefer to read in the original!) I can't not mention this fic, updates of which have been such a prominent (and thrilling) feature of my 2024 reading experience. Maglor is rescued from Glaurung's clutches, but he isn't the same as he was before. I love the dynamics between Maglor and Maedhros and Maglor and his other brothers and the angst and smut of it all.
Shorter fics
one whole with my other by @i-am-a-lonely-visitor (MĂriel/Indis, E, 4k)
“Indis-i-Noldóran,” spoke the Maia through a mouthful of rain. “I bear news of one who will return to your house.”
God... god. So poetic and beautifully written, so tender and sexy. This fic makes me cry every time I reread it. I love arranged marriage setups and this story, with newly and vividly alive Míriel returned to a lonely, proud, and noble Indis in a reconfiguration of the Finwë-Míriel-Indis relationship/Statute, is such a beautiful take on them.
The Patience of the Oak by @imakemywings (Galadriel/Melian, G, 3k)
Galadriel is determined to show Melian she is capable of more than Melian believes. Melian wonders if her pupil grasps her lessons.
This is just incredible--so poetically written, so magical and atmospheric. The power dynamics and mentorship and osanwë are amazing and Melian's vast and eerie presence are peak weird Maiar. Young, reckless, proud Galadriel is captured perfectly. Also, one of the sexiest G-rated fics out there.
To Wear a Heart So White by Tilion / @tilion-writes (Maedhros & Maglor, T, 2k)
“Will all great Ulmo’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?” Maglor whispered hoarsely. “No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red.” “My hands are of your color,” Maedhros growled, “but I shame to wear a heart so white.”
Maedhros and Maglor at Sirion, and dialogue from Macbeth. I've been captivated by this ever since I read it. Each line is so well-placed and the dynamic between them sings. I love the way this concept is used to express the canon violence and tragedy of it all, too.
Banked Fires Blaze by Chestnut_pod (Aerin & Fire Pot; Aerin/Brodda, T, 2k)
What is it to be made for a kinder world?
This fic is SO creative and brilliant--telling Aerin's story and the burning of Brodda's hall as part of a longer folktale/myth about women and hearths and Brodda's people and the coming Dagor Dagorath. I really love examinations of non-normative/human/"bad" traditions and cultures in Tolkien and I was blown away by this portrait of a different kind of Silmarillion myth!
Proxy by @aipilosse (Celegorm/Celebrimbor, E, 3k)
Celegorm's nephew seeks him out one evening in Nargothrond. Celegorm is playing king, but Celebrimbor's game is less clear.
This is so juicy and gendery--masc transmasc Celegorm comparing Celebrimbor to LĂșthien. Celegorm leaning further and further into playing the villain and Celebrimbor struggling with the family's deeds, the break between them imminent, makes for such a good dynamic. Dark and sexy and fraught!!
the ways of birds by @welcomingdisaster (Maglor & Maedhros, T, 4k)
When Maglor is captured in the aftermath of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, he doesn't expect a rescue.
Whump in the venerable whumpfic tradition and honestly so formative to me. I love how gritty this is and how vividly I can picture the wretched goblin march through the landscape. I LOVE Maedhros rejecting political expediency and rejecting pragmatism to save Maglor.
My Son by @polutrope (FĂ«anor/Maglor, E, 3k)
“Father, I assure you: it is nothing. I would choose you a thousand times before any husband. Ever would I choose my own blood before that of a stranger.” After his exile to Formenos, Feanor locks himself in the vault with the Silmarils. Makalaure goes to him.
This is such an eerie and beautiful dark fairytale. With how entwined the Feanorians all are by the Oath and their loyalty to FĂ«anor, this relationship makes only too much sense in this story. I love Maglor's desire and the gender and selfhood of it all, and how unsettling and selfish FĂ«anor's taking possession of him is.
make me come alive by @queerofthedagger (Maedhros/Maglor, E, 6k)
Maglor struggles to give up control. Maedhros makes sure that he learns.
MY SILMSMUTEXCHANGE GIFT!! Himring Maedhros + osanwë lifestyle BDSM + Gap Maglor. This builds deliciously--it is sooo sexy. Maglor's loyalty and Maglor struggling to accept Maedhros' authority--but needing it, it settling his guilt and unease--are fantastic. One of the hottest unhinged Maedhroses I have read. I love the way his presence looms in Maglor's mind even in his absence and how convinced he is that he has Maglor's best interests at heart.
+ 1 extra: Forbidden Prey by @whovianofmidgard (Celegorm/Maglor, M, 3k)
Celegorm doesn't know that he is attracted to his older brother, Maglor. He ends up pushing him away, while searching for Maglor's traits in his other potential loves.
I have to mention this fic because I simply enjoyed reading it SO much. I love a feminine Maglor and a Celegorm who wants Maglor and is taking that out on him. The hints of background Maedhros/Maglor, Celegorm's jealousy and obsession, and the way this spirals into Celegorm's attraction to LĂșthien are all just catnip to my brain.
Really short fics (under or around 1k)
The Fortress by TheLegendCreator (Himring & Maedhros, G, ~500 words)
A Dwarf visits Tol Himling and wonders about the craftsmanship. He listens to the stone-song, and it tells him the tale of an Elf-lord that wove his heart into stone.
I love the mythic/fairytale vibes of this--the way Himring's stones remember Maedhros, and the dwarven OC is chilled hearing his tale. It strongly evokes to me the "deep they delved us, fair they wrought us" memory and history of Tolkien's ruins and landscapes.
sundial by @swanmaiden (Pengolodh/DĂrhavel, G, ~500 words)
Pengolodh meets a kindred spirit in the market square at the Havens of Sirion.
This is so bittersweet--the humble but bustling life of Sirion before the kinslaying and the mutual recognition of these two historians and tellers of tales. Knowing what's to come makes their brief connection and Pengolodh's resolution to share his feelings hit all the harder. You get the feeling that he never gets the chance to.
One Thousand Days by @melestasflight (Uldor & Maedhros, T, ~800 words)
Uldor has spent one thousand days carefully observing the Lord of Himring. Because everyone has a weakness, and Maedhros’ weakness lies in the West.
I just love the POV switch here on Tolkien's "villainous" peoples, the way this story makes Uldor's betrayal seem not only compelling but reasonable from his perspective. The arrogant preoccupation of Elves with other Elves, the rumors of the kinslayings, Uldor's dying curse flung at Maglor.... all so good.
Fire by @buds-of-marjoram (Maedhros/Maglor, M, ~300 words)
My brother came back; an inferno.
This brief ficlet is so evocative and so sensual. I love the BDSM dynamic here and the Maglor POV of Maedhros--the way Maedhros has changed, become cruel even, but they adore each other and are completely entwined.
Let the water hold me down by BloodwingBlackbird (Daeron/Melian, E, ~900 words)
Daeron and Melian and songs.
Melian captivates Daeron and Daeron gives himself and his music over to her as her conduit. An absolutely incredible eerie, otherworldly Melian and the patron/artist dynamic is so sexy. Daeron's juxtaposed with Maglor--who can't understand what he shares with Melian and can't decide whether to pity or envy him for his queen's patronage. So vividly and poetically written. My Innumerable Stars gift!!
crowns and other trinkets by @thelordofgifs (Maedhros & Maglor, G, 1.4k)
In the years of Maedhros’ captivity Maglor would indulge himself, sometimes, and open the chest, and admire the treasure within as though he were yet a fanciful child trying on his brother’s baubles; and he would tell himself that he would hear Maedhros’ laughing voice at the door any moment now, saying, Are you going through my things again, little magpie? Before the Mereth Aderthad, Maedhros and Maglor sort through some jewellery.
I always adore Maglor haunted by guilt from his "kingship" and this scene brings so much of that for me in subtle ways. I love Maedhros' attention to Maglor, the way he wants to foist adornments on him, and the way the pieces of jewelry link past and present, bringing younger and happier moments into the room in bleak Beleriand where they must decide which of their few things to part with. Hints of Celegorm being cruel and accusatory to Maglor during Maedhros' captivity are the cherry on top for me.
Atonement by @jouissants (Maedhros/Maglor, G, 1.5k)
Maedhros and Maglor, home at the end of the world.
Out of so many amazing fics and amazing Maedhros/Maglor fics from jouissants this year I struggled to pick what to put on this list but it had to include this one--so comforting and tender, I've reread it so many times. I LOVE this weary canon divergence Maedhros--how determined he is to love Maglor well despite everything, to stay with him, to not choose death--how he's deeply satisfied by Maglor's small comforts, too, despite things not being easy and their life being so humble. Maglor pregnancy literally can fix them I believe it.
Surfeited by sabcatt / @shinraelectricpowercom (Celegorm/Dior, E, 1.1k)
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die. After the Ruin of Doriath, Celegorm has some fun with his prize. Dior would like to get off this ride.
This is like the best evil "tender"(-ish) noncon ever. Celegorm/Dior is such a good ship all the time but especially when Celegorm gets the chance to be horrific and to take out his thwarted attraction for LĂșthien on Dior. This brilliantly crafted smut is bringing it all. Go read it...

Bring Back What Once Was Mine - Finrod x gn!reader
After the War of the Ring, you return home to Valinor, hoping to finally be reunited with your husband.
Words: 1k Tags: mix of fluff and angst, mention of canon character death, bilbo makes a cameo because why not
A/N: “being reunited after a long time“ is one of my favourite tropes, it‘s the perfect mix of angst and fluff. also i feel like finrod‘s apparent psychic abilities get overlooked way too often in fics, so i had to include them.
Tumblr media
You never would have thought you’d see the white shores of Valinor again, after thousands of years. Waves of nostalgia washed over you as the grey ship approached the harbour. Memories of more innocent times passed through your mind. Of being young and in love with Findaráto, of a blissful marriage before the darkening. You wondered if he had decided to return to Arda, if there was a chance you’d finally see him again.
You still vividly remembered the day Orodreth had sought you out to tell you your husband wasn‘t returning from his mission. Up until that moment, you had been praying to the Valar that FindarĂĄto’s vision had deceived him – that he simply hadn‘t interpreted it correctly. You were still amazed that you hadn‘t faded away right then and there, your fĂ«a seemingly torn apart.
“What a magnificent sight!” You were drawn from your sombre thoughts by the elderly hobbit next to you, whose eyes were full off fascination. You couldn’t conceive what it was like to see the Blessed Realm for the first time, but you imagined it must have been overwhelming. “Your stories haven’t done it justice, (Y/N). I never could have imagined such beauty.” You simply smiled politely and nodded. Normally you delighted in engaging Bilbo’s worldly curiosity (only Eru knew just how many stories you had told him about Findaráto specifically), but the inner tension was robbing you of the energy to engage in conversation. What if he hadn’t returned? What if he would never want to return? Shaking off the thought, you told yourself to hold off on the negativity.
Stepping off the ship beside Artanis felt almost surreal. You had been gone for thousands of years and now it felt like you had only left yesterday. A large crowd of elves was gathered at the docks, each of them hoping to be reunited with their friends or loved ones, just like most passengers on your ship. For a moment you thought you had spotted Findaråto,  but on second glance it turned out to be your father-in-law and you were once again stunned at how much his eldest son took after him. Your mother-in-law stood beside her husband, hope shining in her eyes as she scanned the descending passengers.
Artanis called out to her parents in delight and the three of them came together in a tight hug. You lingered behind a little, not wanting to intrude on the moment. It didn‘t take long for ArafinwĂ« and EĂ€rwen to take note of your presence, however, and you were taken into their arms as well. Has he returned? you wanted to ask but ArafinwĂ« seemed to have already read your mind. “Yes,“ he simply said, “but he does not dwell with us, as much as it pains us. He seeks solace and only rarely comes to see us.“ Your heart sank. You knew how much FindarĂĄto adored his family and to avoid them like this was entirely out of character. The horrors of his death must have still haunted him too much. Not that you could blame him – your own dreams had been haunted for weeks by what had been described to you of his death.
You strolled along the beach, following the directions Findaráto’s parents had given you. After a while, a house appeared in the distance – sitting lonely and far away from other dwellings. A lump formed in your throat. What would you even say to him? What would his condition be after what his father had told you? The questions  echoed in your mind until you finally reached the house. It was simple enough, clearly not meant for more than two people.
A familiar, beloved voice reached your keen ears and at last you saw him. Harp on his lap, feet dangling across the water, Findaráto sat on the pier singing a song you knew all too well – he had written it for you in the beginning of your courtship. “Findaráto!” You exclaimed, adrenaline filling your entire body. He turned around at the call of his name and when he spotted you, he hastily sat aside his harp and started rushing to meet you half-way. The two of you collided so hard it almost sent you toppling onto the ground. You couldn’t tell who cried harder.
Even after thousands of years, his smell had remained the same – a mix of lavender and berries, with a hint of sea salt. You breathed him in deeply, feeling the tension leave your body and being replaced by a sensation you could only describe as coming home. Hopefully he felt the same. Entangling yourself a little from his embrace, you finally gazed upon his face. Not a thing had changed, even if this was not his original body – that one would forever rest in the depths of drowned Beleriand. One of your hands came up to caress his cheek and he leaned into the touch immediately. “I have missed you so much,” you whispered. It was an immense understatement, there were no words that could adequately describe the feeling of abruptly having half of your fĂ«a ripped from you. “Me, too,” he whispered back and bent down to nuzzle your nose and press a tender kiss to your lips, sighing as he did so.
“I knew you‘d come back to me, I just didn‘t know when,“ Findaráto said, a shadow briefly passing over his face. He didn‘t need to elaborate, you knew he was talking about him having had yet another vision. Your heart ached at the thought of how exhausting it must have been for him these past millennia, living in constant uncertainty as to when he would finally be reunited with his beloved, as his visions had promised. Did these promises make him leave the halls early, foregoing valuable time of healing? You decided to push the oncoming guilt away for now. There was plenty of time for these conversations to be had later.
“Well, I‘m here now, and you best believe I‘m not going anywhere anytime soon.“ It wasn’t a mere promise. Nothing would ever divide the two of you again and no amount of sinister visions would be able to change that.

The Phantom of the Middle-earth
I don't know how many of you know, but Galadriel's brother Finrod and Sauron fought each other with songs of power (Finrod lost). So they competed by singing.
Tumblr media
Tolkien liked to use his poems and songs in his works...
"He chanted a song of wizardry, Of piercing, opening, of treachery, Revealing, uncovering, betraying. Then sudden Felagund there swaying sang in answer a song of staying, Resisting, battling against power, Of secrets kept, strength like a tower, And trust unbroken, freedom, escape; Of changing and of shifting shape, Of snares eluded, broken traps, The prison opening, the chain that snaps, Backwards and forwards swayed their song. Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong The chanting swelled, Felagund fought, And all the magic and might he brought, Of Elvenesse into his words. Softly in the gloom they heard the birds Singing afar in Nargothrond, The sighing of the sea beyond, Beyond the western world, on sand, On sand of pearls in Elvenland. Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing In Valinor, the red blood flowing Beside the sea, where the Noldor slew The Foamriders, and stealing drew Their white ships with their white sails From lamplit havens. The wind wails, The wolf howls. The ravens flee. The ice mutters in the mouths of the sea. The captives sad in Angband mourn, Thunder rumbles, the fires burn- And Finrod fell before the throne."
I wondered what would happen if Marion (Sauron) also tried to seduce Galadriel in song, similar to the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera.
youtube
I would really like that.

Silm Advent calendar 11: Eagles
Warnings: some late NĂșmenor, but not descriptive.
Tumblr media
Tagroval landed on the mountaintop which still smelled of freshly-hewn stone, and, of course, of hallowed ground. Maybe rock would be a better word. Was rock a ground? Surely it was something to sit on. Below, at the roots of the mountain, Lady Yavanna and her Maiar planted the forest.
Yes, this would be a good place to live. Not as far as Middle Earth, but not in Valinor proper. Somewhere more quiet and a little more subdued.
He took to the air again, circling around the mountain, seeking a good place for a nest.
Some years later — a dozen or two — a fleet of ships appeared in the distance, like a white flock, and it wasn't long until they landed. A multitude of Men came on the shores, and into the land. Their exclamations of awe rose into the sky. In a few years, they built the first cities, and a road to the mountain. Fortunately it wasn't too close to the nest of Tagroval’s family.
One day the Edain came to the mountain: a perfectly silent crowd led by a descendent of Melian. There was something about them that felt both ancient and new, and none of the eagles dared to land. Instead they circled above, silently pondering what it could all mean.
Since then the Men came often, but rarely in such a large and profound group.
Years passed, the trees grew and so did the cities of Men, and eventually a new king led the procession. And later, another. Tagroval didn't pay much attention to those changes.
On the distant sea, ships grew bigger and started leaving for long. He had to look really carefully to see them — visible only in good weather — at the distant shores in the east. Then a great war was fought there, but the eagles did not concern themselves with Middle Earth much, except to agree that they'd made a good decision to not live there.
People came to the mountain less often, and Tagroval appreciated the peace, but a shadow darkened his thoughts.
The cities grew bigger and richer, and the Men became restless. They sailed back and forth, talked louder and often smelled of fear. One day a brilliant ship came from the West, and Tagroval saw glimpses of his friend, but they did not talk. The visit was short and focused on the king's palace, and the shadow thickened.
Years passed and Men stopped coming to the mountain almost completely. They spoke to each other more angrily, and not in the melodic words of Sindarin. But the forest was still green and full of game.
The ships sailed back and forth, but most didn't resemble birds anymore, they were more like dragons — full of gold and yet greedy for more. The smaller, birdlike vessels sailed east from time to time, but never came back.
One spring a new king came to the mountain. His company was much less numerous, but his eyes were sharp almost like Tagroval’s and his heart willing to take flight — but too many burdens weighed him down and with each season he grew more tired. And the processions weren't getting any bigger. One day he did not come again.
Not long after, the fleet went to war.
When it returned, the wind smelled of fire and Tagroval shivered in apprehension.
Soldiers patrolled the low part of the mountain road, and a new silver dome shone in the city. Nimloth screamed wordlessly in fire and soon many Men followed her.
It was time to leave.
Storms came and later earthquakes, and one day when a host of his brothers and sisters appeared on the horizon, Tagroval joined them, and with him all the Eagles of the island.
The fleet followed them.
The Eagles flew back and forth, seeing, remembering, witnessing. The screams. The smoke. The laughter. The fleet.
It finally landed and — like a rat into a nest of much nobler creatures, the king led his army into the white shore.
Unseen, brighter than Taniquetil, higher than the flight, both ancient and new — and the world broke.
Somewhere beyond the storm a queen climbed, too late.
Even further, a flock of ships took flight.

So I know not a lot of people in the world have a strong opinion on who is best to ship Middle Earth’s Sun with but I am obsessed with The Lost Tales era EonwĂ«/Arien (or FionwĂ«/Urwendi) and the parallels with Elwing and EĂ€rendil.
The Arien/Tilion thing of Moon in love with the Sun of course makes sense in a sort of collective unconscious mythology type way but something about a romance between Bird and Celestial Body is just đŸ”„
In both versions our bird flies through the air seeking lover lost at sea
Manwë sent Fionwë his son, swiftest of all to move about the airs, and bade him say to Urwendi that the bark of the Sun come back awhile to Valinor, for the Gods have counsels for her ear; and Fionwë fled most readily, for he had conceived a great love for that bright maiden long ago, and her loveliness now, when bathed in fire she sate as the radiant mistress of the Sun, set him aflame with the eagerness of the Gods. (LT I, VIII)
Indeed for a while mishap fell even upon bright Urwendi, that she wandered the dark grots and endless passages of Ulmo’s realm until FionwĂ« found her and brought her back to Valinor (LT I, IX)
For Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the water to seek EĂ€rendil her beloved. (Silm, ch 24)
who sails in a hallowed ship through the Door of the Night.
Ulmo draws the galleon of the Sun before the Door of Night. Then speaks Urwendi the mystic word, and they open outward before her, and a gust of darkness sweeps in but perishes before her blazing light; and the galleon of the Sun goes out into the limitless dark, and coming behind the world finds the East again. (LT I, IX)
But they took Vingilot, and hallowed it, and bore it away through Valinor to the uttermost rim of the world; and there it passed through the Door of Night and was lifted up even into the oceans of heaven. (Silm, ch 24)
And then our birds Eonwë and Elwing end up being the ones to deliver the Silmarils to their fated places (from Elwing to EÀrendil to Air, from Eonwë to Maedhros and Maglor to Fire and Water)
And thus it came to pass that the Silmarils found their long homes: one in the airs of heaven, and one in the fires of the heart of the world, and one in the deep waters. (Silm, ch 24)
There are several more similarities like the early idea that both EĂ€rendil and Arien encountered mermaids while they were at sea (LT I, commentary on The Tale of QorinĂłmi and LT II, V) and Tilion originally chasing EĂ€rendil instead of Arien (LT II, V)
And also I just think Eonwë should be allowed to do the apocalypse as revenge for his girlfriend because come on:
For ’tis said that ere the Great End come Melko shall in some wise contrive a quarrel between Moon and Sun, and Ilinsor shall seek to follow Urwendi through the Gates, and when they are gone the Gates of both East and West will be destroyed, and Urwendi and Ilinsor shall be lost. So shall it be that FionwĂ« Úrion, son of ManwĂ«, of love for Urwendi shall in the end be Melko’s bane, and shall destroy the world to destroy his foe, and so shall all things then be rolled away.’ (LT I, IX)

Lassie's Fic Prompts: Tolkien Edition
Usually I haunt mutuals or the prompt channels of Discord communities but the Tolkien ones are all massive and I have anxiety, so I'm gonna shove them in the tag instead! Fic concepts from your friendly local prompt goblin, because god knows my ass will never get around to writing them. This post will get updated as ideas occur to me. Tags are mostly to help express The Vibeℱ. Anyway feel free to come talk to me about this shit I have feelings.
Bagginshield
T+ || Fluffy || Post-Canon, Reunion Fic
When the ringbearers arrive in the Blessed Realm, as a reward for the great peril they have suffered on behalf of all of Middle Earth, they are granted a single boon by the Valar.
Bilbo Baggins knows that elves, dwarves and men go to different realms after death. But Mahal's halls are vast and grand, and he is only a very small Hobbit. Surely room can be found for a single burglar in the dwarven afterlife?
Barduil
G+ || Angsty || Post-Canon, Loss, Closure, Bonus Points For Bard's Memorial Surviving To Be Unearthed In The Modern Day
Before leaving Middle Earth, Thranduil pays a final visit to the memorial he had carved for Bard.
Saurondriel
T+ || || Debates & Bickering, Sauron Drawing Parallels Between His Life & 'Halbrand's', Sauron As A Calming Influence On Morgoth's Genocidal Tendencies, Galadriel's Black & White Thinking, Small Moments Of Goodness
Halbrand takes Galadriel out to eat with his first week's wages from the forge in Armenelos, but the puppetry performance going on in the plaza - in which she is the heroine and he one of the villains - proves a distraction from their definitely-not-a-date.
When Halbrand admits that he's never seen the Sauron/Morgoth duo portrayed as utterly evil before, coming as he does from a land of their allies, Galadriel asks him what kind of stories the Southlanders tell. Sensing an opportunity to humanise himself in her mind, Halbrand dredges up some painful memories to introduce her to Mairon, Melkor and the path to hell paved with twisted love and good intentions.
T+ || Comedy || 5+1 Fic, Sauron Doing His Best, He's Not Spectacular At Being A Human But He's Trying, Galadriel Is Suspicious But Doesn't Know Enough About Humans To Call Him Out, Entirely Normal Mannish Behaviourℱ, Galadriel Will See A Guy Leave Scorchmarks On The Bedsheets When He Comes & Be Like 'It's Fine They Probably All Do That'
Halbrand is quite possibly the most realistic fana Sauron has ever created. He's designed to be so believably human he'll fly completely under the radar. But ultimately, a disguise is only ever as good as the actor wearing it. Halbrand is a fire spirit piloting an exquisitely crafted meat suit, and Sauron's idea of Totally Normal Mannish Behaviour is sometimes...slightly off base.
Galadriel is beginning to suspect the truth: her new significant annoyance is many things, but human is not one of them. But that's a terrifying prospect. And - and she hasn't spent all that much time around the race of Men herself, really. She's used to other elves. So it's probably fine. It's totally fine. Men are just Like That, is all.
AKA, five times Galadriel notices Halbrand's weird-as-fuck Maia traits/behaviours, but deliberately excuses them as Just Human Stuff because she doesn't want to deal with who and what he really is.
And one time where she already knows who and what he is. Many years into their marriage, Galadriel is mostly accustomed to her king's more unusual quirks. But sometimes, Mairon can be so human it almost breaks her heart.
T+ || Future Fic || Redemption Arc, Sort Of, Ainur Family Drama, Where Is Celeborn? Who Knows, Sauron Slouching Less Into The Light Of Goodness & More Into The Mist Of Moral Ambiguity, For Galadrielℱ, Dagor Dagorath
At the close of the Third Age, the last of Arda's elves take ship for Valinor, leaving Middle Earth - and the disembodied spirit of its former Dark Lord - to the race of Men. For thousands upon thousands of years, the Undying Lands enjoy a hard-won peace.
But when Morgoth manages to escape the Void, that peace is shattered, and with Valinor itself under threat, Ossë is dispatched to the world left behind to find the one soul who knows the enemy as well as Morgoth knows himself. He tracks Sauron to the deep south, where he's managed to claw back a physical form and has been living out his powerless exile as Hal Brand, old-timey blacksmith to the local ranchers.
When Ossë appears on his doorstep with news of Morgoth's escape, offering clemency in exchange for information, Sauron suspects a trap, and turns the offer down, intending to go into hiding rather than face his old master's rage at what's become of his dark kingdom and faithful servants. To sweeten the pot, Ossë leverages Sauron's greatest regret: the knowledge that Galadriel is in Valinor, and the implication that she'd like to see her old enemy again. Unable to resist the opportunity to reconcile with her, Sauron agrees to finally go home and share what he knows of Morgoth's plans and likely next moves with the Valar.
But with age-old grudges and rivalries causing trouble in Valinor, and Morgoth determined to retrieve his wayward lieutenant at any cost, can Sauron really turn back from the darkness long enough to hand victory to the Valar in the Last Battle?
T+ || Hurt/Comfort || Trauma, Nightmares, Identity Reveal, Sauron Has Seen Some Shit, He Probably Has Impressive Telepathy Defenses Most Of The Time But Shh, He Loves Her & He Wants To Be The Person She Thinks He Is,
Fighting for his life on the road to Eregion, Halbrand slowly succumbs to a murky world of fever dreams and infection-addled hallucinations. Trying to ease his restless sleep, Galadriel reaches out to to touch his mind...and finds herself dragged into a disjointed maelstrom of her most hated enemy's worst moments and greatest fears: Morgoth's bitter rage, the judgment of the Valar, the agony of bleeding out in the snow at Adar's feet, the inevitable pain of her own rejection if ever he's discovered.
Too weak to repel her or even really realise what he's sharing, Sauron lets her in, taking comfort from her presence. Presented with an opportunity she never thought she'd have - to look through the mind of her enemy unhindered - Galadriel stays her hand long enough to look for closure, for confirmation that he is the monster she's been hunting, that he's been manipulating her all along. Instead, she might just find something worth saving.
T+ || AU || Enemies To Lovers To Enemies To Friends To Lovers Again, Yelling At Sauron As Therapy, Halbrand!Mairon, Probably Because He Feels The Most Himself With Her Or Something, Aulë Knows Whats Up, He 100% Lets Slip On Purpose, Healing
After the destruction of the One Ring, what's left of Sauron's spirit is rounded up by the Valar and imprisoned in Valinor.
Galadriel does not find peace in the Undying Lands. After everything she has seen and done, she struggles to settle back into the realm of winterless spring. When a slip of the tongue from Aulë gives her the location of Sauron's prison, her restless nighttime wanderings begin to take her there to see him.
Sometimes, she is incandescent with rage and betrayal, and she vents her age-old anger on him without expecting any answers. Sometimes, she comes for information, and her questions are cold, cruel, demanding things flung through the bars. Sometimes, she is just sad and tired, and her questions are quiet things passed between them as they sit either side of the door. At first, there is no fight left in him: he takes what she throws at him in defeated silence. But the more she visits - to berate him, to needle him, to call him names, to ask him why, to reminisce - the more he starts to respond to her. And as her anger finally begins to die out, and their time together is increasingly spent remembering, and talking, and getting to know one another anew, the more the broken, amorphous creature in the cell begins to resemble the Man she once thought she knew.
M+ || Shameless Smut || Romance, Sauron's Complicated Relationship With Sexuality, Service Top Galadriel, Maybe Grayspec Maiar, The Mortifying Ordeal Of Emotional Intimacy, He Thinks She Wants To Subjugate Her Enemy, She Actually Wants To Love Her Idiot
Millennia ago, Mairon learned the value of sex as a bargaining chip, and he's been using it to get what he wants from the Incarnates - and Melkor - ever since. It's become a well-honed staple of his negotiation toolkit, a performance so well-rehearsed he barely needs to think about it. It's almost unheard of for anyone to notice that he tends to zone out partway through.
Almost.
Halbrand's tendency to seduce his way out of the doghouse hasn't gone unnoticed by his new queen, and nor has the way his eyes glaze over just as things start to get interesting. She's beginning to wonder whether anyone ever actually told him that intimacy is supposed to be fun. Determined to keep him in the moment with her, she decides she'll just have to teach him that herself.
AKA, Galadriel notices that Halbrand tends to dissociate and put on the act he thinks she wants from him in the bedroom. Concerned, she makes it her mission to show him he's safe to relax and enjoy himself with her - and absolutely wrecks him to make her point.
T+ || Canon Divergence || Galadriel Says Yes, Ainur Family Drama, Mairon's Aulë-Shaped Daddy Issues, Arondir & Theo, Could Be 5+1, Angst & Fluff, Maybe Comedy, Lucifer-Style Therapeutic Breakthrough, Aulë & Mairon Have Different Love Languages/Communication Styles, Galadriel Eyeing Sauron Suspiciously: What Are You Scheming Now, Meanwhile Sauron To Arondir: IDK Man I Just Never Felt Like I Was Good Enough YK? Why Wasn't I Good Enough?, Arondir Just: Your Majesty Have You Considered Therapy
Galadriel names Bronwyn advisor to the newly-restored crown of the Southlands, which means the new king and queen start seeing a lot of her husband and child. Mairon seems fascinated by the little family, and the pseudo-paternal relationship developing between Arondir and Theo - suddenly, he's full of questions about family dynamics for humans and elves. Gradually, the advice of his new wife and friends helps Mairon realise a few things about his own relationship with Aulë.
Alternatively, five times watching Arondir and Theo interact recontextualises a memory for Mairon, and one time he makes a parenting choice with Celebrían and saltily realises Aulë had a point in doing the same thing to him
T+ || Time Travel/Time Loop || Sauron Fucks Up The Timeline, Then Tries To Fix It Without Killing Finrod, Bonus Points If Halbrand Finds He Begrudgingly Likes Finrod, Alternate Meeting, Maybe She's Still A Soldier But Doesn't Remember Him, Maybe He Has To Go Back To Valinor To Even Meet Her, IDK Lots Of Options
The thing about Galadriel's rejection is that it all goes back to the death of her brother.
Either by his own power, or by the power of a Vala who wants to teach him a lesson, Sauron finds himself transported back to shortly before everything fell apart, and realises that, as Halbrand, he has an opportunity to fix everything...by breaking Finrod Felagund out of his own dungeon.
But he's surrounded by dangers, not least of which is his own former self, and time travel is tricky. Saving Felagund's life may have unexpected consequences - without her quest for vengeance, would he ever have met Galadriel at all?
T+ || Canon Divergence || Body-Sharing, The Equivalent Of Having Your Shitty Ex Crashing On Your Couch, Road Trip, There Was Only One Body
Ever since their falling out on the banks of the Glanduin, Sauron has been trying to get into Galadriel's head. One night, furious at yet another invaded dream about a man who never existed, she lashes out. She channels all her power into shoving him off the raft, or stabbing him with Finrod's long-lost dagger - and wakes, shaken and convinced that she just felt Sauron die.
She's half-right. She's successfully caught him by surprise, and ripped him out of his body. Unfortunately for her, since they were connected at the time, she's failed to leave him formless and impotent.
She's dragged him into her own head.
When he awakens, psychological warfare erupts as they battle for control of her body and mind, a twisted back and forth - she tries to drown him in his nightmares, and he tortures her with her broken heart. Eventually, as it becomes clear that the only way to evict him from her brain is to bring him back into proximity with his own body, they reach a tentative, fragile truce. They can hold off on killing each other for as long as it takes to journey across Middle Earth. They hope.
But it's a long way from the Shipwright's home in the Grey Havens to the half-finished tower of Barad-Dur, and a long time to get to grips with someone else's pain. When Halbrand reawakens in Mordor, Galadriel might find she's not so keen to kill him after all.
T+ || AU || Kidfic, Single Mom Galadriel, Halbrand Has A Dog And He's Gonna Make It Everyone's Problem, Step-Sauron, Romcom Vibes, Quite Wholesome Actually, Modern AU
Galadriel's marriage has been hanging by a thread for years, but when her estranged husband Celeborn is confirmed KIA overseas, she unexpectedly finds herself utterly lost in the world. Now a single mother to their heartbroken six-year-old daughter Celebrían, she takes a job offer that moves her little family halfway across the country and finds herself struggling to adjust to her new normal as she tries to settle in to a new area while transitioning from stay-at-home mom to
well. Putting a roof over her daughter's head and making sure Celebrían can see the play therapist a couple times a month.
Lonely, struggling and beginning to wonder if she fucked up by moving away for a fresh start, if she ought to just go home to her parents with her tail between her legs, Galadriel is delighted when CelebrĂan announces she's made a friend in the next garden over, and goes to introduce herself to her neighbours and invite their child to dinner.
The man who answers the door has tattoos, no kids, and is very happy to introduce her to the new friend CelebrĂan has been playing catch with over the fence: Carcharoth, an absurdly oversized shepherd mix.
While Galadriel is initially wary of her child getting friendly with a strange man and his rowdy dog, it's nice to have someone her own age to talk to. Someone who looks at her like he sees her, and doesn't find her wanting. Someone who supports her, and lets her support him in turn.
As their lives begin to twine together and they figure out how to fit their jagged edges together in a way that works, Galadriel starts to think she might just want to stay here after all.
AKA: Halbrand kept the dog in his messy breakup with Melkor. Carcharoth learns to play fetch
and fetches Halbrand a whole-ass family
M+ || AU || Wrong Number, Text Fic, Modern AU, Romcom Vibes, Strangers To Friends To Lovers, But Also Strangers To Rivals To Lovers, Halbrand's A+ Flirting, Found Family, Halbrand Uses His Middle Name In His Personal Life I Guess, Tevildo Is Spoiled And Orange
When Galadriel is offered one of four coveted associate spots at a prestigious inner-city law firm, she barely stops to think before wrestling a lifetime's worth of belongings into the trunk of her sensible hatchback and exchanging her sprawling family home in Tirion for an overpriced one-bed apartment in Eregion, halfway across the country.
While she's settling in, she receives a text from an unknown number - a picture of the sender's cat. And although she's not usually the type to strike up a conversation with a stranger, she's feeling rather alone and isolated in a new city while she waits for her first day at work, and so she responds with both a 'wrong number' warning and a question about the cat.
Unexpectedly, Wrong Number Guy texts back.
And keeps texting.
Over months, she develops a friendship with this stranger she's never met. Wrong Number Guy is apparently called Halbrand, has bizarre taste in music, can recommend an excellent restaurant for almost any cuisine, and should be jailed for excessive use of the smirk emoji. He sends her a good luck text on her first day at work, sends her pictures of Tevildo the cat to cheer her up when she's having a bad day, and once orders pizza to her apartment when she's having a really bad day. He also listens to her vent about her fellow associate and work archnemesis, Mairon, who's smug, shady as all hell, and gunning for the same promotion Galadriel wants, which naturally makes him the worst person alive.
As their relationship evolves, Galadriel starts trying to get Halbrand to meet her in real life. But he seems strangely hesitant for someone so charming and sociable, and it makes her wonder. Who is he, really? And what is he hiding from her?
M+ || AU || Modern AU, Sex Work, Accidental Voyeurism, Porn With Plot
Halbrand, being the fortunate owner of a Sexy Voice, has a nice little side gig doing audio porn on OF/Patreon/whatever, and he's Galadriel's go-to jill-off material. When her elderly neighbour transitions into a nursing home and the most obnoxious man alive moves in next door, she can't help feeling as though she's met him before. But it's not until she hears him getting off through their shared bedroom wall that she realises why his voice is so familiar.
G+ || Canon Compliant-ish || Half-Maia CelebrĂan, Werewolf!Sauron, Father-Daughter Bonding
When CelebrĂan is small and life is peaceful, Galadriel believes her lands to finally be safe, and the little princess of LothlĂłrien is free to wander the forest at will. Near the outskirts of her mother's realm, she befriends a strange wolfish creature with yellow eyes.

Struggling to feel attractive and reclaim her sexuality after the breakdown of her marriage, Galadriel impulsively signs up for OnlyFans following a night out with Nori and one too many cocktails. It's fun and validating and boosts her confidence to get back into the dating scene. The war is over. Morgoth, brought back to Aman in chains, has sued for clemency, but the Valar do not fall for the same trick twice: it will be the Void for him this time. Thousands of his Úmaiar have been imprisoned in Valinor. And Galadriel, her oath fulfilled, joins the legions of Eldar taking ship back to the Undying Lands.
As she struggles to pick up the threads of her old life, embroidering and baking and waiting for her brothers to return from Mandos, a figure begins to appear in her dreams - in the background at first, becoming increasingly prominent the more she notices him - and she comes to know him as Halbrand the blacksmith.
Galadriel is no fool: she knows "Halbrand" is a Maia, paying court to her through her dreams. And she knows well the Aulendili who worked the Smith's forge when she was apprenticed there: she is certain she can discern the identity of her admirer, with a little time and effort.
But her dreams, she will come to realise, are not coming from Aulë's forge, and her Halbrand is no simple worker.
AKA: The war ends with Morgoth's defeat. Imprisoned by the Valar, Sauron's only escape is osanwe. Galadriel, a powerful telepath in her own right, gets unwittingly signed up to a prison pen pal program.

Sauron has spent hundreds of thousands of years devoted to Morgoth, in a relationship where every dynamic was characterised by power and domination - corrupter and corrupted, king and general, master and servant. In that time, he's learned that pain and punishment are unpleasant but essential components of absolution. When he fails or angers Melkor, he is punished for it, and then - eventually - forgiven.
Now, as Halbrand, he's not getting that same routine, and it's making him antsy and unsettled. Galadriel may have agreed to stay with him and bind him to her light, but he's painfully aware of her hatred for Sauron, the way her brother's corpse still lies between them. But she hasn't taken her retribution, and he hates waiting for the hammer to fall. He remembers all too well what happened the last time he failed to address this kind of resentment from an important ally. He wants her to get it over with.
At his invitation - and after a considerable amount of goading with which he manages to make her snap - she vents centuries of loathing and long-nurtured pain on the monster she's hunted for entire lifetimes - and, for reasons she cannot understand, he lets her. This makes Halbrand feel more stable, but she's horrified at her own loss of control. Together, they try to figure out a better way forward.

When baffling intelligence informs Galadriel that Halbrand has returned to what's left of the Southlands and taken up the crown she helped him steal, her conscience cannot allow her to sit idly by and leave those innocent people ignorant of the snake in their midst, vulnerable to whatever foul plan he's concocting for them. At the head of a train of humanitarian aid from Lindon, she rides for Pelargir to reveal Sauron's secret to his people.
As it turns out
they know. They've noticed. Several people saw him shield the village when the volcano erupted. Those who were imprisoned with him in Mordor have heard him use or understand Black Speech, or seen him calm the wargs. Bronwyn, who spends most of her time with him as Chief Advisor, is convinced that he doesn't sleep enough to be human, and he occasionally references events that happened long before he should've been born. But Sauron - an enemy most living elves have personally fought against - is a name from the very oldest of the Southlanders' stories to these people. A fairytale evil, defeated before their grandfathers' great-grandfathers were even thought of. They're more inclined to judge Halbrand based on what they've seen him do in person - save their lives, suffer for them, shield them from Adar - than on oral history from thousands of years ago, and as it stands, they're feeling considerably safer with their odd Maia king protecting them than they would feel without him. They're giving him a chance to prove he's changed for the better. So, shh, Commander. Let him pretend. He thinks nobody's noticed. There's a betting pool on when he'll figure out that they all know.
To Galadriel, this is
a rather alien viewpoint she has to wrestle with. Can someone really change that much in just a few thousand years?

Sauron and Morgoth were still telepathically connected when Morgoth was thrown into the Void. A fragment of his consciousness remains in Sauron's mind, manifesting as a hallucination that only he can see and hear. At first, he is Melkor, the doting lover Sauron chooses to remember, amusing and affectionate and comforting and so, so missed. But, as rage and fear take over and the Void begins to drive Melkor mad, he increasingly behaves like Morgoth, the side of himself Sauron would rather forget - the cruel master whose wrath he fled after his defeat at Tol-in-Gaurhoth. With 'his' Melkor appearing less and less, Sauron becomes more and more burned out under the slew of criticism and mockery, and his confidence in his own ability to lead takes an additional battering when his subordinate turns on him at Forodwaith. When he happens to cross paths with Galadriel, he realises almost immediately that the light in her silences Morgoth's voice in his mind. As they grow closer, her unwavering belief in him - or, at least, in "Halbrand" - makes him want to do good, to please her and prove he's worthy of her support. Secure in their relationship and trying to support him, she suggests a threesome to liven up their staid, predictable sex life - and, after some thought, Celeborn agrees. His one condition is that the third should be a professional, so that the situation won't get messy. Halbrand is the professional; they have a fantastic time with him and begin seeing him regularly. A long time ago, Galadriel married Celebrimbor. They're fond of each other, but since circumstances so often keep them apart (Galadriel hunting Sauron for decades at a time, Celebrimbor inseparable from his forge), they've been quietly maintaining an open marriage for centuries, each occasionally seeking out discrete companionship when they feel the need.
This arrangement has worked well for them for hundreds of years. Neither of them expects it to ever change, or cause drama.
Enter Halbrand.
When Galadriel returns from NĂșmenor with her wounded Southlander king, Celebrimbor is delighted to discover his wife's lover is a fellow smithing nerd. As Halbrand convalesces, Celebrimbor finds himself increasingly drawn to the charming young man and, in spending time with him, actually grows closer to his own wife.

The Men of the Southlands have always been a stubborn, difficult people. Having waited over a thousand years for their royal line to reassert itself, and having seen control over their occupied lands ceded by no less than an elvish general, they're now proving very reluctant to give up on their shiny new king. When Halbrand trades his own surrender for his people's freedom, the displaced refugees descend upon the elven realms, petitioning Gil-Galad and Celebrimbor - Halbrand's apparent allies via Galadriel - to mount a rescue.
Although Galadriel's unsanctioned diplomatic manoeuvring has put him in a difficult position, Gil-Galad opts not to intervene; he thinks leaving Sauron and the orcs to duke it out between them will spare elven lives. For Galadriel herself - still reeling from the shock and betrayal of Halbrand's identity reveal, firmly in the doghouse with her High King, and demoted from her military station - this decision is a difficult one to stomach, as she struggles to reconcile her hatred for Sauron with the sudden fear and concern she feels for Halbrand, along with her own loss of her king's trust and inability to influence or counsel Gil-Galad to her advantage anymore. She's been cut out of the decision-making completely.
When she hears that Celebrimbor - for reasons she cannot begin to understand - has disobeyed Gil-Galad to send soldiers into Mordor to retrieve Halbrand, she rides for Eregion immediately, still not entirely sure whether she wants to see for herself that he's safe, or take the opportunity to kill him personally.

Galadriel does not find Sauron in Forodwaith, but she does find something that catches her attention: a strange ooze that moves almost like a living thing. Disturbed and suspicious, she catches it in a container and takes it back to Eregion with her, hoping one of the scholars there will be able to tell her what it is. Despite a few odd moments on the journey that make her wonder whether the goo might somehow be sentient, Eregion's scientists determine that the ooze is not an animal - it's a highly magically potent substance, probably leftover from Sauron's experiments.
Galadriel has some misgivings, but ultimately, Celebrimbor has some projects he thinks the goo might prove useful for, and she hands it over. He incorporates it into his Rings.
It's not until Galadriel slides Nenya onto her finger and begins having some strange dreams/hearing voices that she realises the truth: they've accidentally trapped a disincorporated Maia in there. Now they have to figure out how to free him.
And all Sauron has to do is not let on which Maia they've unwittingly imprisoned.
AKA: Mairon's Ă«ala is in the Three, and he wants out. This has consequences (whether funny, romantic, horrifying, etc) for the ringbearers.

The only hope in this endless night
Is to follow you through the shadows of the deepest blue, away from the light
I hear your voice is calling me: "Don't be afraid"
But there's something deep inside of me
Forcing me to turn away, to turn away
Take my hand, don't turn away, I need you to stay
I know a place where the light and the dark can become as one
This loneliness is killing me
Is there a place we both can live?
You're the dancer in the dark
You're the child of the light
You're the sinner of all time
You're the saint with wings so white
You're the distant shape in the night
You're all the innocence left alive
You're like tainted sun
You're the star shining bright
This is one of my favorite songs ever and I think the ship captures this trope so well. It's the ship of ships, the archetypes of light and darkness and their volatile symbiosis and contradiction.
I wanted to share the lyrics as well with the song bc I think it fits (you gotta genderswap it bc the male voice is the light and the female voice is the dark, but otherwise):
Sauron is the Deceiver, the form that knows and dances in the dark recesses of marred Endórë, wrongdoer of all time from the memory of the Noldor, servant of the Darkness Everlasting; the shape-shifter with power over of the unseen world, burning mightiest among the tainted flames of Anor.
And yet since the Wrath, out of fear, and out of pain, and out of missed redemption, a loneliness, a yearning consumes him.
Galadriel, the Child of IlĂșvatar, Lady of Light, warrior-lady and rallier of men, a sorts of Saint Joan of Arc in Arda, moved by forces Men lack the conviction to name; - and yet at the same time, just the inner child, the little girl, who does not understand and misses her older brother, who wants to restore him, restore the unmarred innocence and love she knew in Valinor, her true home that no longer is.
What is home, then? An aspiring ruler, a houseless inheritor of the House of Finarfin, whose Star is branded in her armor over her heart.
The flame of that Star burns bright, both is her Light, her compass since the Doom was spoken - but also burns with the same FĂ«anorian Fire that burned too bright, and consumed itself.
It must be tempered - but not doused, never doused. No one understands that, so she knows a loneliness, too.
That compass leads her to empower what she sought to destroy, and nobody shall forget, that He lives because of her.
She knows he knows.
He knows her loneliness, because he knows the same loneliness.
And he knew it in her before before she did, so he saw her, and sees her, and she doesn't have to be lonely ever again.
As he leads, she follows, but turn away she must; and the further she gets, the more she will have to follow back. Even if she makes a dwelling and wears a crown, she knows it is not her true crown, that it does not match Nenya; that it will never be home.
Home will be that place, where light and dark can become as one. She will yearn for that place, the place where she'll take his hand and not walk away. Even if it is not within the spheres. Even if she has to wait for the world to be remade. Even if she has to plead to the One, like LĂșthien plead for Beren.
And she will curse the world, and curse him, and curse herself. Was a greater test, a greater burden ever placed upon a Child of IlĂșvatar?

I don’t understand why the most common interpretation of the battle of Finrod and Sauron I see is that Finrod lost because Sauron had the moral high ground, or even because Finrod felt particularly guilty about AlqualondĂ«.
It's certainly possible that Finrod felt some measure of guilt over the First Kinslaying, whether that be for not stopping it, for not turning back with his father, or for being willing to take the ships of his mother's people. You can certainly argue that he had some sort of moral culpability for not taking a stand with Arafinwë, though I personally think that's taking personal responsibility to a rather absurd length given that Finrod neither killed anybody nor actually ever set foot in a stolen ship.
Rather, I think what defeated Finrod was the invocation of despair. Looking at the relevant passage from the Lay of Leithian:
He chanted a song of wizardry, Of piercing, opening, of treachery, Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
Sauron is trying to figure out who they are.
Then sudden Felagund there swaying Sang in answer a song of staying, Resisting, battling against power, Of secrets kept, strength like a tower, And trust unbroken, freedom, escape; Of changing and of shifting shape, Of snares eluded, broken traps, The prison opening, the chain that snaps.
Finrod is saying, "No, I will not tell you who we are," but look at specifically how he does it. He's saying, "everyone with me trusts me, and I trust them. You can't overcome that."
Backwards and forwards swayed their song. Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong The chanting swelled, Felagund fought, And all the magic and might he brought Of Elvenesse into his words. Softly in the gloom they heard the birds Singing afar in Nargothrond, The sighing of the Sea beyond, Beyond the western world, on sand, On sand of pearls in Elvenland.
ok this part always makes me cry cuz it's so beautiful, but more to the point: Finrod is backing up his statement that Sauron cannot recognize them with power. What power? The power of Elvenesse, of Elvenhome: of Elven strongholds. He specifically invokes Nargothrond - a beautiful kingdom, the symbol of friendship between Elves and Dwarves, and more to the point a place of safety for Elves, whose location Morgoth does not know. And then he invokes Alqualondë. Unwise, perhaps; but he is right that Alqualonde was never touched by Morgoth. It was under the protection of Ulmo and also too far for the light of the Trees to be reached, so Morgoth didn't directly harm the Teleri on the day of the Darkening. Finrod is saying, here: even in the hour of his greatest triumph, Morgoth couldn't harm all Elves. Ulmo is on our side. We will always be able to escape.
The captives sad in Angband mourn. Thunder rumbles, the fires burn— And Finrod fell before the throne.
To Finrod's argument, Sauron responds: guess what? Morgoth didn't even have to attack the Teleri. The Noldor did that for him. There are no safe places, because the Noldor have set themselves against gods: even if you escape Morgoth, you will fall under the Doom of Mandos. The battle is hopeless, and always will be hopeless. The Noldor are doomed.
Interestingly, he does address Finrod's two points directly. He first points out that even if the Teleri escaped Morgoth, they couldn't escape the malice he had sown among the Noldor. But then he invokes "captives sad in Angband" and "the fires burn," which seems to be a pretty clear reference to the curse laid upon HĂșrin and the eventual fall of Nargothrond to Glaurung. Sauron is saying: Nargothrond will fall too.
The thing is: he is right. The Teleri were slaughtered. Nargothrond fell. Gondolin fell. Doriath fell. Sirion fell. The Noldor are in a tragedy, and they know it. Finrod knows it, and he cannot argue back.
Of course, the thing that makes The Silmarillion so powerful is that even in Finrod's hour of darkest despair, neither he nor Beren nor his Ten give up their names and their errand. Finrod gives up his life to buy Beren a few more hours; and by his valour the line of Beren and LĂșthien was saved, and the Doom of the Noldor lifted.
Endurance beyond hope is a central theme of Tolkien's work, no matter the Age: in Frodo's desperate errand, in Celebrimbor's refusal to give up the Three, and in Finrod's refusal to accept Beren's death no matter the cost. Finrod lost; how could he do otherwise? But even without hope, he kept going. And in the end, he was returned beyond hope to joy: "...Felagund laughs beneath the trees / in Valinor, and comes no more / to this grey world of tears and war."
