Pretear gave us magical girl fashion, reverse harem host club boys, sentai warrior combat scenarios, Snow White subtext, Cinderella themes, Captain Planet premise AND a tomboy MC x brooding protector romance. SO REAL 😤👏🏾
So I had to do this tribute all the way for my nostalgia series. 🫡

Diamonds, Toads, and Dark Magical Girls
According to Bill Ellis in "The Fairy-Telling Craft of Princess Tutu: Meta-Commentary and the Folkloresque," the fairy tale of Cinderella can be seen as one of the earliest examples of the transformation sequences/henshin seen in magical girl anime, particularly in how the title character is given items that help her achieve a goal, usually given to her by a magical being (her mother's spirit in a tree, a fairy godmother, etc.).
Thinking again about the connection between magical girls and fairy tales--even if they aren't as meta as Tutu, many magical girls do use imagery and ideas from European fairy tales (Sailor Moon alone has references to Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault)--I wondered what other character types from the genre may have some precedent in fairy tales. Then I started thinking about the Dark Magical Girl character.
Not every magical girl story has a Dark Magical Girl, but they do crop up in a lot of works. To name a few, there's Fate Testarossa from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Rue/Kraehe from Princess Tutu, and countless others that would be too numerous to name. In general they tend to be more cynical, darker counterparts to the main protagonists, who tend to come from relatively more stable environments. Whatever magic they possess also may be more sinister, at least initially.
Tying in somewhat to the story of Cinderella is the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index fairy tale type "The Kind and Unkind Girls" (ATU 480). Many of the stories of this type involve a rivalry between two stepsisters, one being favored by the stepmother due to being the latter's biological daughter. The general idea in most versions of the tale is that both girls encounter a magical being at separate points in time. The kind girl helps the magical being in some way, at which point the magical being gives her a magical ability or magical presents. Meanwhile, the unkind girl refuses to help the magical being and is cursed in some fashion, or, worse, killed. The kind girl meanwhile usually ends up marrying a prince, or a similar character. One of the more popular versions of this story, "Diamonds and Toads," has the kind girl gain the ability to have a jewel or flower fall from her mouth when she speaks, while the unkind girl is cursed to have toads and snakes fall from hers. And while the kind girl does marry a prince, the unkind one is kicked out of her house and dies alone in the woods. (Insert something about Revolutionary Girl Utena's comment about how a girl who cannot become a princess is doomed to be a witch.)
Typically in these fairy tales, the unkind girl is never shown to be a real threat to the kind one; the ultimate threat is the stepmother, who uses her daughter as a means to an end. In contrast, Dark Magical Girls tend to have, well, magic that helps them attack the magical girl protagonist. In this regard, they're the Heavy in the plot, while the witch/mother-like figure/real enemy waits in the background (as is the case in a lot of magical girl shows--the Raven and Rue, Precia and Fate, Fine and Chris in Symphogear etc.). Sometimes the Dark Magical Girl will be a major threat, though--like the Princess of Disaster in Pretear (who is loosely-inspired by the Evil Queen in Snow White).
In The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales (1976), Bruno Bettelheim argues that the stepmother as a character is a way for children to process the negative traits of their own mothers, while still idealizing the good qualities of them. With that in mind, the unkind sister and the Dark Magical Girl can be viewed as a way of processing/externalizing the negative traits that a girl can have, being cruel, rebellious, and uncaring. They also embody their fears, too--the fear of being alone, rejected, and doomed to fail.
Of course, nowadays, Dark Magical Girls have a tendency to be redeemed and reconcile with/befriend the main magical girl, something the kind and unkind girls never seem to do in the fairy tales. Maybe it's just emblematic of society deciding that killing a girl off for being a little rude is a bit unfair. She's just a kid trying to find her place in the world, too, after all.

Saw a tweet saying that Pretear was a reverse harem.
Pretear.
For those that don't know, Pretear is a magical girl series. It's a bit unique in the fact that the magical girl transformation only happens when the female MC, Himeno, combines together with one of the male Leafe Knights (the series is also very loosely based off of Snow White, with the Leafe Knights basically being the Seven Dwarfs).
Anyway, here are all the male characters in Pretear:
Himeno's Dad who is madly in love with his new wife and is the MC's literal dad, so, you know:
Tumblr media
Mr. Tanaka, the chauffeur, who still holds a flame for Himeno's new step-mother:
Tumblr media
Three literal child characters (all of whom Himeno treats more like little brothers, and she interacts more like a motherly figure for the littlest one, who is a literal toddler) :
Tumblr media
Kei, who is absolutely queer and is definitely not straight, like, please:
Tumblr media
Sasame who is nice to Himeno, but has his own love interest and is more important for Mawata, who definitely has a crush on him:
Tumblr media
Go, he is the mandatory pervert character (though, thankfully, this aspect of his character didn't show up too much, still gross). That being said he never hits on Himeno and honestly doesn't even interact with her all that much (like, there were barely any images of him in the quick Google search I just did):
Tumblr media
Hayate, he is literally the only male character in the series that has overtly romantic interactions with Himeno and is very clearly her designated love interest:
Tumblr media
How does someone watch the show in full and think it's a reverse harem? Like...I just don't get it. Male characters talking to, interacting with, and having bonds with the female character doesn't automatically equate to romantic feelings and therefore a harem (especially when three of those male characters are literal children). The above also applies to Furuba, btw. People still view that series as a reverse harem too, which is just...???

Legacy of Snow Ch.3 || Stray Kids
FANDOM: Stray Kids
PAIRING: Han x Minho
WORD COUNT: 1634
RATING: PG
POTENTIAL TRIGGERS: Mentions of blood and violence
SUMMARY:
Freshly graduated from a prestigious university for music and the arts, Han Jisung is ready to take on the world when he accepts employment at District 325 Records. Han’s dream of taking the world by storm with his talent hits a slight hiccup when a literal spark emanates from a high five he shares with his new boss. That moment brings him to the discovery that he is a direct descendant of a previous Pretear, a guardian to the world. With that knowledge he also finds that Chan isn’t entirely human, he’s what is called a Leafé Knight and he isn’t the only one who resides in the human realm.
Thrust into a fray of magic, learning his own abilities and fighting monsters of darkness, Han has a lot to endure fresh out of college. On top of it all, he has to deal with a growing attraction to one of the seven knights who fight alongside him. It’s a whirlwind for Han, but can he find his footing in the new world he’s found himself a part of?

Chapter Three: Observations
At 1:45, Han was finishing up the setup of his computers in his office, music playing from his phone when there was a knock on the door and he looked up to see Chan. “Hey there, boss.” he chimes as he grins, waving one hand. “Lunch time already?”
“Yeah. You ready?” Chan asks as he leans against the doorway.
“Yep!” Han hops up as he speaks, grabbing his messenger bag out of habit and looping it over his body. “Where are we going?”
“You'll see. It's my favorite place, honestly.” Chan motions for Han to follow, leading the way to the elevators. “How are you settling in?”
“Pretty good. I was customizing my system and wallpapers.” Han replied, the pair finding pleasant conversation as Chan led the way down a few blocks. Han learned that Chan had two siblings that he doted on at every chance he was able. They talked about their families and the way they’d begun their journeys with music, and Han felt like he’d found a new older brother. It felt like no time had really passed when they reached a cafe and grill, Chan grinning as he lifted a hand to motion they had arrived.
“Here we are! Best place in the district.” Chan announced, reaching to open the door.
“It smells amazing in here.” Han mused as he walked in, looking around at the two sides of the building - to the left was a large cafe setting that had a few students working at tables. On the right side, a beautiful restaurant with most of the tables seated. “It’s gorgeous, too.” His attention was grabbed by a white cat trotting over, moving to nuzzle at his leg. “Hello there, cutie.” He cooed, petting the cat as he babbled at it.
“Channie!” a female voice called, drawing his attention as a strawberry blonde walked over, long hair pulled into a ponytail. “I was wondering if we’d see you today.”
“Sana!” Chan chimed, opening his arms to hug the female. “I’m showing my new hire the best places in the area. This is Han. Han,” he turned to look at Han, who looked up from once again petting the cat and stood up. “This is Sana, owner of the cafe.”
“Pleasure, Miss Sana!” Han greeted, holding out a hand, glancing down as the cat wound its way around his leg.
“Oh, I see you’ve met Yuki.” Sana smiles as she shakes Han’s hand, eyes looking down at the feline.
“Oh, is that his name?”
“It is. He’s our little prince, so I can’t let him go, but we do have a few wandering around who need homes.” Sana confirmed, laughing when Han’s face lit up.
“Wait, this is a cat cafe?”
“Yep. I help out a couple of the shelters when their cat roster is too big. Currently, the cafe houses nine cats other than Yuki, all of them fixed and up to date on vaccines.” Sana explained. “So if you’re considering, let one of the staff know.”
“I will, thank you.” Han replied.
“Minho is here, too, if you’d like to join him?” Sana turns to Chan as she speaks, head nodding towards the back wall.
“Sure, save the tables for strangers.” Chan teased, motioning for Han to follow.
The pair head over and Han recognizes the man sitting at the table scrolling through his phone - the one from this morning in the practice room. Dark purple hair actually has a dimension of color, the overall hues just close enough to look like one shade from afar. Now up close, Han was able to see the full effect of ice blue eyes that almost looked like a sunburst crystal. The man looks up as he hears them approaching, and Han feels like he can’t breathe for a moment being so close to such a gorgeous male.
“Hey there, Minho.” Chan greeted, moving to slide into the booth across from the man, leaving room as Han blindly slides in as well.
Minho nods, eyes going to Han as his head cocks to one side. “Who’s this?”
“Oh, this is my new hire, Han.” Chan replied. “He just started at 325 today.”
Han is aware of Minho’s gaze on him, like his soul is being examined, and he lifts a hand to wave a little, his own pink gaze watching back. “Hi.”
“Hm,” Minho hums as he nods, appearing thoughtful for a moment. “I hope Chan here hasn’t given you all the boring stuff to do.”
“Not at all! It’s actually been nice, but it’s only day one.” Han replied.
“Is this the one you hand picked?” Minho’s attention was on Chan as he spoke, arching a brow when Chan confirmed. “Well, if Chan picked you personally, you’ll do fine. His instinct is never wrong.” Something in the way Minho says the words makes Han pause, glancing at Chan as Minho speaks again. “By the way, Chan, Yeji said to say thank you as always. It’s nice to have a space without the coach breathing down our necks.”
“You know he just wants you guys to succeed.” Chan countered.
“He paired us simply because we’re his top skaters, Chan. You know how long it took to find chemistry.”
“You guys seemed to have good chemistry this morning?” Han chimed in, catching Minho’s eyes even though he’s engrossed in the menu. “What song were you using?” When he looks up, he smiles a little nervously at the unreadable expression on the other’s face and preoccupies himself with the menu again.
“Minho, be nice. He means well.” Chan playfully scolded, looking up as a waiter came to get orders.
“Isn’t that fascinating?” Minho rolled his eyes, but there was the faintest hint of a smile, which both confused and concerned Han. “But, to answer your question Han, we haven’t officially decided. We’re debating a broadway track or medley, but we can’t find one that can work what we need in the routine.”
“Broadway?” Han asked, perking up. “I actually have a medley I designed for a project if you’d like to listen? It’s a Phantom medley.”
“Like Phantom of the Opera?” Minho asked back. He takes a moment to look between the two across from him before he nods. “Sure, why not?” As Han grins and starts scrolling through his phone, Minho looks to Chan with a look of inquiry to which Chan merely shrugs. While Han is looking for the track, he reaches into his own bag to pull out a pair of headphones as he waits.
“Ah, here it is!” Han bounces a little as he holds his phone out. “You just have to hit play.” He lets Minho take the phone, watching as the other plugs his headphones in and puts the earbuds into his ears to listen. The moment Minho’s eyes close so he can listen to the track, Han feels himself become nervous, self doubt evident as he suddenly looks down at the table where his hands are wrapped around his cup.
“Hey.” Chan nudges Han when he sees the way the younger looks, smiling encouragingly when Han looks at him. “I’m sure it’s a great piece.”
“I haven’t let anyone hear it since my project.” Han replied. “I don’t know how a normal person will-”
“Don’t think like that, Han. I’ve seen what you’re capable of, but more importantly, you know what you’re capable of.” Chan interjected, voice more firm. “Why do you think I chose you to be the first immediate hire, hm? Don’t let that confidence vanish just because you aren’t sitting in a studio or at a soundboard. You can believe in what you create without the audio program open in front of you.”
Han is grateful to hear the words, Chan’s voice enveloping him in a wave of calm. He nodded in thanks, startling a little when a waiter approached to take their order. As the waiter walked away to put the order in, Han leaned back in his chair, sipping his drink as he waited. “That piece came out better than I expected it to, honestly.” he admitted softly. “I fought with it for over three weeks.” Chan is opening his mouth to reply when ice blue eyes open and Minho pulls his headphones out of his ears.
“You arranged this medley?” he asked, tone indiscernible.
Han bites his lower lip nervously as he nodded. “It was one of my last projects.”
Minho hums to himself before fiddling with the phone in front of him, glancing up to see the amused look on Chan’s face. “What?”
“Just ask for the file, Minho.” Chan teased.
“What?” Han’s pink eyes widened, a grin spreading across his face. “You liked it?”
“Yeji still has to listen to it, but I can see a routine or two to it. I put my number in your phone so you can send it.” Minho replied nonchalantly. Han’s excitement was tangible, though, and he found himself unable to keep one corner of his mouth from quirking up. “Don’t get too excited, she can be a tough sell.”
“Do you have to act so cold, Minho?” Chan scolded playfully, his own cup setting back on the table.
“Isn’t that my nature, Christopher?” Minho teased with a smirk, reaching over to pat Chan’s arm. “You of all people should know that by now.” As he withdrew his hand, his fingers brushed Chan’s cup, reaching to pick his own up and take a drink.
“Maybe I keep hoping you’ll open up that frozen heart.” Chan countered with a laugh, shaking his head. As the waiter appeared with a cart of food, he lifted his cup to take a drink, stopping and frowning before leveling a stare at Minho. “Seriously?” he asked, sighing. “You owe me a fresh one.”
“Worth it,” Minho shrugged with a faint laugh as he thanked the server, letting them walk away before getting up to go to the counter.
Han, lost in the excitement to try the food that mingles with the scent of coffee, comes back to reality when Minho gets up. “Hey, where’s he going? The food just got here.” He cracked his chopsticks and began preparing a wrap, bouncing a little as he put it together and closed the lettuce around the ingredients.
“He just went to get another drink, no big deal. He likes to pull pranks from time to time, you’ll get used to it once you get to know him.” Chan assured, moving to take a bite of his ramyeon.
At the reassurance, Han continued to munch on his food, moaning at the taste. “This is probably the best wraps I’ve had in ages.” he praised, stuffing another bite in his mouth. Minho returned with fresh drinks, and the trio fell into a comfortable rhythm as they ate with light conversation.
“You look like a quokka.” Minho said suddenly, head cocked to one side.
Han looked up in confusion, cheeks puffed with food as he ate. “Hm?”
“You. Look. Like. A. Quokka.” Minho reiterated slower, earning himself a smack from Chan from across the table.
“Be nice, Minho.”
Han made a noise as he swallowed his food, shaking his head. “No, no, it’s fine. I’ve been called a lot worse, actually. At least quokkas are cute. My brother calls me ‘Little Squirrel’.”
“Is that name from how you eat?” Minho inquired flatly, one brow arched up.
“Lee Minho,” Chan scolded despite Han’s laughter. “Would it kill you to be nice to my employee?” Han’s laughter only increased at the words, reaching to wave his hand to show it didn’t bother him.
“You cannot tell me he doesn’t look like a quokka, Chan.” Minho countered.
“Regardless-”
“It’s okay, really.” Han brushed off, finishing making the last of his lettuce wraps. “I don’t mind being called a quokka.” He took a bite of his wrap when he finished speaking, humming contentedly.
“I should get to the rink. I have my solo stuff to work on today as well.” Minho mused, moving to stand up and grab his jacket. “Say Chan, how is our little problem going?”
Chan gave Minho a pointed look, but shrugged it off after a moment. “Day to day, but no luck yet. I’ll follow up later.”
“Later it is.” Minho nodded, waving a hand at Han. “It was nice to meet you, Han. Don’t let this one work you too hard.” Even if his face wasn’t particularly readable, Han could hear the playful note in the words.
“I won’t. You be safe.” Han replied, a breath before Chan spoke up.
“You don’t go causing any trouble, Minho.”
“Who do I look like, Seungmin?” Minho laughed a little, waving over his shoulder as he headed out, leaving the two at the table.
“He doesn’t seem too terrible,” Han mused, popping the last bite of his food into his mouth.
“You were with me.” Chan laughed a little, lifting his cup to take another drink. “He had no reason to detest you. If there’s anyone he trusts when it comes to people, it’s me.”
“How come?”
Chan hums to himself, thinking for a moment. “I have a way with people, I guess. I can get a feel for their intentions really well.”
“So you’re good at reading people.” Han concluded.
“You could say that,” Chan agreed, pulling his wallet out to put a tip on the table. “I’m gonna go pay. Are you ready?”
“Yeah, let me finish my drink and we’ll be good to go.” Han assured, lifting his cup as he slid out of the booth to let Chan out. He watched Chan walk away, taking his last drink and setting the now empty cup back on the table. The motion brought his attention to one of the cups sitting around Chan’s bowl, the light casting a sheen over the frozen block inside the mug. Confusion distorted his face as he tried to understand what he was seeing, but Chan’s greeting when he came back pulled him from his thoughts. “Are we all set?”
“Yep, let’s head back.”
“What’s the plan?”
“Well, I have two recording sessions scheduled. Would you like to see my process and meet the artists?”
“Sounds like a plan if I’ve ever heard one!” Han excitedly chimed, falling in step with Chan as they walked the distance back to the building. His excitement was enough that the memory of the frozen cube on the table was forgotten as he looked forward to the rest of what the day would hold.

Finished Sailor Moon R's Makai Tree Arc, and for a filler arc, I thought it was pretty good for something that was clearly made to stall for time. Most notable is the fact that Ail and An are also looking for energy, which is functionally just like what the Dark Kingdom wanted.
But what really stood out to me was that Junichi Sato worked on this arc as a director, and it contains themes and images that would be expanded on in Pretear later on. Most notably, one episode has the cast put on a Snow White play, while the Makai Tree is a tree that feeds on life energy. Pretear later on would use Snow White as the basis for its story, while an evil tree stealing life energy becomes the final threat of that show. This fairy tale theme pretty much reaches its logical conclusion with Princess Tutu.
Hard to blame Sato for doing that, though... Magical Girls seem tailor-made to reference fairy tales in their storylines (Sally the Witch is self-explanatory, while Smile! Precure used a fairy tale theme, for some other examples.)

How would you like it if there was a Fairytale Mahou Shoujo?
I would very much like it, at least if they did something with the premise, like give the characters plotlines that reference the fairy tales they're based on.
Fairy tales are a topic that's at least been used a lot, but not quite in the way I'd really want (I'm hoping for something like Ever After High). I'm currently watching Smile Precure which has a fairytale theme, but I don't have high hopes on exploring them in a particularly deep way. I also hear Märchen Mädchen is based on fairytales but also that it was really bad. And Pretear is based on the Snow White, which to my embarrassment I didn't realise until it was over even though it's literally in the title... At least Princess Tutu is there to do more with this idea than the rest put together but it mostly sticks to Ugly Duckling (and Swan Lake) for the heroines, while I'm looking a magical girl team with everyone heavily leaning on different fairy tales in their design and story.
