sorry this took so long to come out and so long for me to update in general! i wrote half of this and then decided to re do the whole thing entirely differently and then I got stuck and started writing two other things but here it is, enjoy!
âYou will not marry himâ your fathers voice bellowed.
You had begged and pleaded and yet there was no resolve, your father was adamant in a match with the lord Jorah Mallister a man near twice your age. And not a match with the man you held dear to your heart.
Benjicot Blackwood.
You had met him near six summers ago. For six years you had been courting him in private, away from all eyes but each otherâs.
It had been easy to fall in love with him, with someone as kind and well mannered as he. But that wasnât what had drawn you to him.
At the time neither of you knew which house the other belonged too, nor cared. There seemed to be something unexplainable that drew you to one another.
You were like twin flames, so similar and yet you were your own unique force but together you burned brighter.
But this wasnât something your lord father could understand.
The feud between Blackwood and Bracken had spanned through time and was a never-ending factor. They would always despise one another, the true reason why lost to time and only fuel was added to the fire with each generation.
If the Blackwoodâs stood on one side, you can guarantee the Brackens stood on the other.
The sides of their conflict varied, no one knowing the truth, neither history book nor legend.
With both houses being old and ancient, with blood of the first men running though their veins. Both claimed to be kings, the Blackwoodâs claiming to have been kings of the wolfs wood before being driven south. And the Brackens had been kings of the Riverlands.
There it is said the Blackwoodâs usurped the Bracken lands, where the Blackwoodâs claimed the Brackens were petty lords and sells words hired to usurp them.
And though there had been a hundred peaceâs between the families over the millennia, with every blackwood comes Bracken blood, and ever bracken comes blackwood blood. But no peace lasted long enough, and each peace ended with a larger wound than before.
When it comes between the two it is often a case of, he said or she said, no one wishes to get involved and no one knows the truth, and no matter the efforts of their overlord of kings, no truce lasted.
And all because of this, a feud neither of you wished to take part in, you were torn apart.
A marriage set between you and an old lord, and the turning of a key locking you in your rooms, separating you from him.
Your father thought it was some infatuation, when in fact it was everything.
You had met as children, playing on the border between your lands. He had tripped and fell over the border stones and you, with your friends having long run off at the sight of a blackwood came to aid him.
Tending to the small cut on his head, you teased him mercilessly, claiming he must be the best knight the Blackwoodâs had if he would so easily cross the border as he did.
Andin truth that was how it all started, childish teasing, and the small gesture of caring for his small cut.
With days spent meeting at the border, playing as children did, you forged a bond. A bond that only strengthen as you were sent to ward with your motherâs family over.
With two summers spent together, the third apart it was clear much had changed when you went to meet at the border once more.
You had become a woman and he a man, and suddenly the childish games got lost and suddenly bashful smiles were exchanged in the place of teasing.
âHow are you?â he has asked, having spent he summer with no word, unable to send each other letters, with fear of being caught and your friendship ending.
It was clear much had changed, your faces had lost the baby fat, he was now a head taller than you, whereas before you had towered over him. Your clothes had become that of a lady, no longer where your dressed hemmed to your ankles, your tunics and trousers thrown out in favour of gowns and jewels.
Your hair had grown long, and now adorned with jewels and accessories alike.
You looked everything of the lady you were expected to be and more. You had grown into your features, and he was struck by you.
It was almost like you were strangers again, with you blushing as you towards him and he unsure of how to act towards you know.
Stuttering your words, as you recounted your year, blushing as you told him of your kiss with one of the stable hands. How you had helped your aunt give birth, and how you had felt lonely without him, even though you only got to see him for a few hours every few days.
He had recounted his summer, how he had become a squire and his father had started giving him duties, fit for the future lord of Raventree.
The awkwardness left you both as the day passed and the sun set, you both left with a new view of the other. A year apart changing you from childhood friends to newfound crushes.
Neither of you cared that you were from rivalling families, the skirmishes between your cousins and his cousins and even him, never affecting you bar a small argument here and there.
As time passed and you both grew older you found most of your days spent with the other, and soon the friendly hand holding was exchanged for soft kisses and wandering hands.
If you were from any other house a marriage would have been easy, but neither of your fathers accepted the other, and as tensions grew and grew you lost any hope for a future with Ben.
You had kept your friendship, your companionship a secret, a well-kept secret no one not even your closest friends knew off.
Until two days ago.
The news of a betrothal had spurred you; you had run to the border to find Ben and beg him to run away.
But instead of Ben you found your oldest brother Amos, and a man you briefly recognised to be Bryden blackwood, a cousin to Ben. They seemed to be in some argument, over the boundary stones. Luckily no swords had been drawn yet.
You approached your brother cautiously.
âAmosâ you started, nodding to the bracken men that stood with him.
âSisterâŚwhat are you doing her?â he asked, moving away from Brydenâs glare.
âI could ask you the same, arenât you meant to patrol the border not step over it?â âI knew you changed the boarder stones!â
âI did not, my sister does not know what she speaks, she rarely comes here!â
âRarely swear Iâve seen you beforeâ he stepped closer to you, your brother slowly stood to stand in front of you. âYesâŚI know you, youâre that girl my cousins spends his days with! hah a Bracken bitchâ.
âWhat does he speak of!â your brother demanded.
âNothing, I donât know- â
Ben walked over, a laugh set on his face and hand on his sword, ready to fight if needed. âWhat is going on here?â he said, facing falling as he saw you.
Bryden turned to face him, âWe were simply observing the border stones before your bitch came alongâ.
âWhat did you call her?â both Ben and Amos questioned, tone stern and glares set on Bryden.
âa Bracken Bitchâ he punctuated each word, stepping closer to Amos, only to be dragged away by Ben and a punch landing swiftly on his face.
Benâs fists pounded Brydenâs face, blood spattering as groans left Brydenâs lips, ben only stopped as his uncle, Wilheim came running up and pulled him away.
âWhat is going on here!â
âYour nephew insulted my sisterâ Amos spoke, his hand reaching for his sword.
âAnd why is Benjicot bloody blackwood taking it out on him?â he near screamed.
You looked tot eh floor, to scared to speak.
âHe called her my BrackenâŚmy Bracken bitchâ Ben spoke, his eyes glued to your form as you nervously kicked at the border stones.
Wilheim gave Ben and exasperate look, âis its true boy?â
You looked up, feeling all eyes on yours.
âyesâ he said, his face downcast in shame. Not shame for being with you, for the moments you shared or the love he felt but for the way it was revealed, for how you had been spoken off and the laughs that irrupted at the news.
Wilheim pulled him closer, âis she still?â everyone knew what he was asking, no matter how discrete he tried to be.
You knew the answer, and you knew no matter what came out of Bens mouth your brother would be forced to tell your father and your father would demand the maester check your maidenhead, something he wouldnât find.
As you waited for Ben to answer your mind went back to six moons ago.
Your mind went back to six moons ago.
It was your nameday, you had escaped the celebrations and made your way to the border, where ben awaited gift in hand.
âHappy name dayâ he greeted, pulling you in for a hug, his face buried in your neck.
âThank youâ you breathed, your touches lingering as you pulled apart, his face close too yours.
Your eyes were locked to his, as you hesitated to step away.
âMy gift?â you asked, as you stepped back ever so slightly, noticing the lingering gaze on your lips.
He smiled shyly, before presenting you the gift.
The gift, a book you had long desired. You had been unable to find it anywhere and yet, Ben had found it just for you.
âBenâ you breathed, at a loss for words as you started up at him, a shy smile on his face. âThank youâ, you said taking a step towards him once more, your bodyâs now impossible close.
âIt was no problemâ he breathed, your faces breaths apart.
A blush filled your cheeks as you leant forward your lips catching his in a soft slow kiss.
Your mouths moved in tandem, slow and soft as his hands came up to grip your waist, pulling you into him as your kiss became sloppier, his tongue teasing its way into your mouth as your hands came up to grip his hair, your lips never breaking.
Had you not been where anyone could find you, you where sure the kiss would never end, but the fear of being caught, your reputation ruined spurned you to push yourself away from him.
âwe should go somewhere more privateâ you breathed, âout of prying eyesâ âwonât they notice if your gone much longer?â âI doubt it, I said the wine had gone to my head and my maid, Farrah was more than happy to vouch the same, and that I wish to be left alone after I gave her 10 silver dragons.â
He laughed, âthere is an inn nearby, perhaps we could go there?â
âAn inn?â you asked a small smile on your face.
He nodded, âI know you may not wish to spend your nameday in an inn- â âI wish to spend it with youâ you interrupted, âI do not care whereâ.
And so, you had gone to the inn, it was barren when you got in, not many traveling to kingsâ road so near winter, a room was easy to find and for the first time you were truly away from prying eyes.
The room was quaint, at least compared to what you were used too, with a double bed in the centre of the room, a small tub and chamber pot on one side and a dresser and table on the other.
âWill anyone question if you are gone long?â you asked, taking off your cloak.
You knew he most likely wouldnât, having more freedom than you as a man and heir.
âPerhaps, but as long as I ma back by dawn I doubt I will get in any trouble.â
You nodded, âyou leave often in the night then?â you teased, a smirk playing on your lips.
He coughed awkwardly, âmy uncle and my cousins, Bryden, Davos and Bennifer took me to a brothel for my namedayâ.
âa Brothel?â you asked in surprise, though there was a hint in jealousy in your voice, âand did you?
âNo!â he said quickly, âno I wouldnât do thatâ to you, he wanted to say, but up until today you hadnât done anything, bar hold hands and lingering touches here and there.
You smiled, standing up and walking up to him, he seemed frozen, unsure of what to do or what his intentions were of even bringing you here.
You moved cautiously, your hand reaching for his as you moved yourself into his embrace.
Your fingers interlocking with his, âbenâ you whispered.
And he whispered your name back, smiling as he did.
âI love youâ you spoke, no hesitation in your voice.
âI love youâ he breathed back, his face full of uninhibited joy.
Your lips captured his once more, this time it was full of passion, your lips moving together in tandem, his hands moving to your waist and pulling you effortlessly closer to him.
With one hand still interlocked with his, the other reached up and gripped his hair pulling him even closer to you.
Your mouths never broke apart, even as a soft moan left your lips as his tongue moved with yours.
You started to step back slowly, dragging him with you until your back hit the bed, Bens body covering yours, his hips slowly began to grind against yours, feeling his clothed cock through his breeches as he grinded against your heat.
You moaned softly into his mouth as your bodyâs moved together.
âBenâ you groaned, as his lips separated from yours and moved to your neck, pressing quick sloppy kisses before leaning over you his eyes staring into yours.
He whispered your name, âdo you want to keep going?â
You nodded, leaning up to reach for the laces of your gown, you never broke eye contact as you untied your dress, allowing it to fall slightly and reveal our thin chemise.
He blushed at the sight, leaning back and allowing you to fully remove your dress, before you reached for him and started to undo the ties of his tunic and breaches.
You moved slowly, taking him in as you undid his clothes, your touches lingering as you finally revealed his naked chest.
Now only in your small clothes, he reached over you once more, his body covering yours and his lips once again capturing yours.
Your bodies continued to move against each other the friction casing moans and groans to fall from his lips and yours.
Your chemise bunching up at your waist, revealing your wet cunt to Ben.
âgodsâ he said, feeling your bare cunt rub against his length, âhis hands moved from where he had placed them at your waist to move along your thighs.
He swallowed slightly as your legs began to part, baring yourself to him.
âDo you ever touch yourself?â he asked, his fingers moved closer to your heat.
âyesâ you breathed as he lightly teased your folds.
âShow meâ
You breathe grew heavy, as you nervously moved your fingers down the length of your body.
Ben moved back from you as your finger dipped into your folds, gathering up your silk.
Circling your clit is slow motions, you never broke eye contact, soft moans leaving your mouth.
With one fingering circling your clit you began to dip another into your folds, circling and teasing yourself before finally plunging a finger into your hole.
You let out a moan as you did, slowly pumping your finger in and out of you.
âGods, your beautiful,â Ben said, his hand coming to meet yours as he swiftly replaced your fingers, plunging two fingers into your hole.
You let out a high-pitched moan. The feel of his fingers was nothing compared to yours, the pleasure entirely different, even more so when his thumb came to circle your clit.
âLike this?â he asked, his movements unsure as he watched you and took in every moan or whimper you made.
âYes! Gods yesâ you said, feeling your peak wash over you as his fingers moved faster in and out of you.
You breathed heavily, sinking into the mattress as you rode out your peak.
âGood?â he asked, reaching forward to press a soft kiss to your mouth.
âyesâ you said, before sitting up and reaching for the bottom of your chemise.
âAre you sure?â he asked, as you began to take of the last layer of clothing.
You smiled, nodding your head, and revealing yourself to him.
He moaned at the sight of you, getting impossible hard as he took you in.
He stood of the bed slowly, moving to take of his final layer and bare himself to you.
You groaned at the sight, âcome hereâ you breathed.
He slowly crawled back onto the bed, his body covering yours once more as he took your lips in a passionate and heated kiss, his legs slowly parted yours as he positioned himself at your entrance.
âAre you sure?â he asked softly, moving to caress your face.
Nodding, you reached up to kiss him, âyesâ.
And with that he slowly entered you.
Groaning at the stretch, you felt a slight sting as he slowly entered you, your face contorted in quick discomfort that quickly faded as he settled himself fully inside you, allowing you time to adjust.
He seemed lost tin pleasure at the feeling of your heat wrapped around his length, his face buried in the nape of your neck as he held back from moving.
âYou can moveâ you breathed after a minute, hands wrapping around his neck as you moved your hips to urge him.
He moved slowly, pumping in and out of you, learning every move that made you moan or whimper.
He kissed slowly at your neck as his hips pumped in and out of you, his groans muffled by your neck as he began to pump faster and harder.
Your moans grew more frequent, your hand reaching down to rub at your clit as you felt the familiar feel of your peak hitting you once more, it was fast but no less pleasurable as you and he reached your peak simultaneously.
He swiftly removed himself and finished on your stomach, as your fingers continued to circle your clit, as you rode out your peak.
âgodsâ you laughed, after a few minutes, ben having gone to get a cloth to clean you up. âI hadnât expected this for my namedayâ you said reaching for him and pulling him into for a kiss once more.
You spent the night wrapped in his embrace, dawn coming faster than you had hoped and you were soon sneaking back into your rooms.
As the moons passed your meetings became ones of lovers, with romantic rendezvous with disguises as you went to Fairmarket parading as smallfolk away from prying eyes.
Your nights spent in each otherâs embrace, whether it was in the inn or under the stary sky.
Now six moons later, you did not regret that night or the nights that followed, but the look of disappointment your brother gave you made you wish a part of you desired to take it back. Â
ânoâ Benji spoke, answering his uncleâs question of your maidenhead.
âYou will marryâ he spoke, your father will approve it and Iâm sure we could do with peace with our too sides, with the talk of war and allâ.
But your father had instantly refused, saying he would rather a whore for a daughter than a blackwood.
You had been locked in your room for three moons, wedding arrangements made for you a lord Mallister.
You had been unable to escape to leave and see Ben, your every move watched and monitored. Though you had heard he had demanded to see you, begging for your hand and even challenging lord Mallister to a duel.
All had been refused and you were starting to lose all hope of ever seeing him again.
Then there was a tap at your window.
âBen!â you whisper shouted, seeing him hanging onto the wall for dear life as you opened the window to let him in.
âHow did you- âyou began to ask only to be cut of with a demanding kiss as Bens lips attacked yours.
âI have missed youâ he breathed as you pushed you down onto the bed and began to untie his breeches. âMy father agrees we should wed.â he started, kissing you again, as he began to bunch up your skirts, revealing your heat to him. âHe says the only way your father would accept us to marry his if you were pregnantâ he breathed, his breaches now around his ancles as his finger began to tease your hole.
âPregnant?â you questioned, âhe said heâd rather me a whore than a blackwoodâ you said, moaning as he began to pump in fingers in and out of your entrance.
âYour father is also a devout man of the faith, is he notâ he said, fingers pumping in and out of you.
âyesâ you moaned, âand you and your family are followers of the old godsâŚhe would never- âyou cut yourself off with a moan as his cock replaced his fingers, plunging in and out of you at fast pace.
âAnd yet he said to my father that if a babe came, he would allow itâŚand yet he kept you from me, from any chance of usâ he groaned, leaning down to kiss you as he felt your walls clench around his cock as you came.
âI am going to fuck a baby into you, going to fill you up with my seedâ he groaned, âI will come, climb the walls of your castle every night until you a bred and then we shall get married and you will me mine, not that cunt Mallister!â his tone was harsh, but as his eyes bore into yours you saw the longing, the love and sense of purpose as he fucked you like he had never fucked you before.
It was primal, pure animalistic as he fucked his seed into you.
He lay on top of you, his cock still in you as you both caught your breath.
That night he took you in more ways than you could count, and in the breath moments his cock wasnât filling you he recounted his days apart from you.
But as dawn broke, he was forced to leave, just like every other night you shred in each otherâs arms.
But he fulfilled his promise visiting you every night until your moons blood stopped, and a pregnancy was confirmed.
Your father was furious, hated how you had defied him, found away to see Ben once more, and now he was forced to marry you.
With a slight swollen belly, it was no secret of why the Brackens and Blackwoodâs once again decided to try at peace, even more so when Ben could hardly wait for the bedding ceremony to take you as his wife.

octavinelleâs âhappy endingsâ
***SPOILER WARNING: This post will go into detail about the dreams Azul, Jade, and Floyd experience in the book 7 part 10 update.***
OKAY, so thereâs a debate in the TWST fandom about whether or not Azul and the twins consider each other ârealâ friends or just business partners. Iâve shared my own thoughts on this topic in the past (which you can read here!). After the most recent main story update, itâs now more clear to me than ever that they do treasure each other even if they donât express that in traditional ways.
Letâs discuss them in order that they appear in book 7 part 10!! I know thereâs some vagueness surrounding how much of the dream is Malleus actively controlling the scenarios (hence the limited and shallow scope of them) and how much the dreams actively pull from the innate desires of the dreamer, but for the sake of the argument letâs assume the latter is more influential in shaping and structure of the dreams.
First up, Floyd!
So Floyd is known as the âI do what I want when I feel like itâ guy. He hates two main things: 1) being told what to do/having his freedom restrained and 2) being bored. To ensure that Floyd is happy, the dream consistently shifts to locations so he vanishes explore and experience new things.
What you might notice is that Azul and Jade arenât around in Floydâs dream. This doesnât mean they donât exist or that Floyd doesnât know who they are though. When asked, Floyd replies that Azul is simply doing his own thing (focusing on his business ventures/schemes) and Jade is there supporting him, thus leaving Floyd to his own devices. The fact that Jade and Azul are still present in Floydâs dream, just not in an immediate capacity, makes complete sense.
In the waking world, Floyd loves to stir up trouble with his brother and Azul. The thing is, Floyd also dislikes it when they tell him off, order him to do something heâs not in the mood for, or punish him for acting out. Yes, Jade for the most part enables Floyd to misbehave, and yes, Azul has largely learned by now that itâs best to sit back and let Floyd fuck off/finish throwing a tantrum rather than intervene. However, there are still times when they order Floyd around or get upset with him. For example, Azul scolds Floyd for damaging the vault where they keep the contracts in book 3 and for not selling the drinks heâs supposed to in book 5. We see numerous examples across vignettes as well: Jade forces Floyd to stand in line at a famous patisserie for Trey as penance for eating special fruits meant for a VIP client (Trey Labwear vignettes), Azul and Jade wring Floyd for his eel slime (Azul Ceremonial Robes vignettes), Azul orders Floyd to secure the rights to Samâs Mystery Drink even though Floyd shows a clear disinterest in the task (Floyd Dorm Uniform vignettes), etc.
In spite of these grievances, Floyd doesnât entirely despise Jade and Azul, nor would he be happier without them. Theyâre an important part of his life, hence why they still linger in the dream, just in the periphery where they canât butt in with whatever Floyd wants to do. Jade and Azul arenât present and compliant since that, too, would quickly bore Floyd. He loves those two goobers in part because theyâre chaotic and unpredictable, not because theyâre yes men to his every action. The dream might not be able to keep up with that demand; it only seems to operate in extremes rather than conjure enough nuance to keep Floyd stimulated and content. This is why all the places Floyd already visited bored him; he got showered with too many conveniences and eventually got fed up with it all.
If you need even more damning evidence, all previous dreams would manifest someone closely tied to the dreamer in an attempt to keep them in the dreamscape. Who does Floydâs dream summon? AZUL AND JADE. If Floyd genuinely found them annoying or didnât want them near, the surely the dream would spawn other people. BUT NO, it specifically spawned THOSE TWO in an effort to convince Floyd. It can be argued that they could very well be a source of hatred since Kalim and Neige showed up for Jamil and Vil respectively, but I genuinely think Floyd doesnât feel that degree of negativity toward Jade and Azul; the kind of hatred that Jamil and Vil have for their respective counterparts has never been expressed by Floyd toward Jade or Azul.
Floyd reacts to dream!Jade and Azul in a manner thatâs very different from the dreamers that came before him⌠with anger. And a LOT of anger too. He immediately clocks them as phonies and, he, fully waking, demands to know who the fakes are, because they certainly arenât Jade and Azul. Floyd points out their faces and voices may resemble theirs, but theyâre acting in a way that they never would (suggesting a âboringâ way of living). That pisses him off to the point where he cuts the fakes down all by himself. Brutal violence aside, this tells us a lot about Floyd... as well as Malleus.
We see that Floyd has become lethargic and bored despite the dream's attempts to sate him, which just demonstrates that Malleus, whose magic has a hand in crafting these realities, has a shallow understanding of what makes people happy. (Edit: to be clear, Malleus having a âshallow understandingâ of happiness is not a personal take; this is a direct statement made by Idia in-game and this is where I am pulling my phrasing from.) He thinks that removing all obstacles and challenge to what you want is what leads to a happy ending when, in truth, it clearly isn't the case for Floyd, who craves stimulation and change. While Malleus is motivated outright controlling the details of Floydâs dream down to the wire, his autonomous magic has decided to get rid of any challenges Floyd may face in his pursuit of happiness. (I would continue about the Malleus portion, but since this post is about the Octatrio, I will instead direct you to this post, which shares many of my own thoughts ^^) I think that's why Floyd truly "woke" when he was faced with dream!Azul and Jade; a part of him recognizes how wrong it is for the two people he chose to spend his time with because they're so fun are now turning around and preaching complacency. It tells us just how well Floyd knows those two and values their... unique perspectives, shall we say?
Next, just Jade!
What's immediately fascinating about Jade's dream is that it's also underwater, despite Floyd and co. suspecting it would be on land/in the mountains. Floyd even changes from his merform to his human form prior to hopping to Jade's dream because he was under the impression that it would be on land. This ends up not being the case, although Malleus's magic does manifest the underwater equivalent of "mountains", which are volcanic vents at the bottom of the sea.
We see Jade happily exploring alongside a dream!Azul and dream!Floyd, who are both very different than the real ones. Dream!Azul has big, watery eyes and is much more of a coward and crybaby than the real Azul is. He also seems to be very dependent on Jade, who derives great joy from watching dream!Azul flail about while trying to attain his goals (in this case, access to a gold vein). This is in-character with what we already know about Jade; he amuses himself by watching others struggle--especially Azul, whom Jade frequently teases, such as tricking him to dance as a mummy in the first Halloween event and comparing Azul's greedy attitude to the positive traits of other dorm leaders. Jade also prefers to have control over the circumstances, so he likes it when people defer to his word or advice. So what better to hand him than an Azul that listens to his every word and also provides entertainment value in his tears?
As for dream!Floyd, he presents with a very goofy face and seems to lack his usual aggression and flippancy. Instead, he has a fixation on eating other sea life around him (crabs, shrimp, etc.) and happily goes along with Jade's mountain exploration. Like dream!Azul, dream!Floyd acts dependent on Jade to guide him and even acts cowardly in a fight. Now we can sort of get a glimpse of how Jade feels about Floyd too. Dream!Floyd's pliant and agreeable nature may come in part from the dream seeking to provide Jade with more free entertainment, but it could also be that Jade wants Floyd to share in his interests. But here Floyd is not gung-ho about mountains; instead, he acts very innocently, almost like a kid going along with whatever his parents decide to do for the day. It gives me the impression that Jade doesn't see Floyd as threatening but as someone cute and child-like. This idea is reinforced when, in an attempt to keep Jade dreaming, dream!Azul tells him that Floyd is cute and not some thug (like the real Floyd is). AND JADE 100% BUYS IT. He 100% believes that dresm!Floyd is the "true" one, that his Floyd and Azul would be useless without his support.
Idia makes an important comment at this point in book 7. He explains that Jade is having a hard time waking up because he believes in himself too strongly. That also means that Jade is distrustful of others; he is the only person he counts on. This reflected in how dream!Azul and dream!Floyd present. Both are heavily reliant on Jade to tell them what to do. In real life, too, Jade uses his competency to get into others' good graces (including the notoriously hard to please Vil; see his Dorm Uniform vignettes) so then he can reap the benefits that relationship offers. Jade is just that confident that he can succeed. Indeed, he often is the one coming close to tasting success when all others have failed. If we look back at Ghost Marriage, Jade was about to win over Eliza's heart before Floyd rudely interrupted and pointed out the flowers Jade was gifting were poisonous. Back to Idia's comment; because this is dream's Jade world, he's perhaps too invested in the dream that he has made, thus Jade is choosing to believe the dream that he conjured over the reality staring him in the face. It takes fistfighting with Floyd AND a jolt from Sebek's UM to properly shock some sense into Jade. He is otherwise too stuck in his own head to consider a truth that isn't one he has constructed for himself.
Still, I find it revealing that even though Jade is essentially stuck in his own headspace, dream!Floyd and dream!Azul are the only other people around. Floyd and Azulâs dreams feature way more NPCs, but Jadeâs dream is pretty lonely. He could theoretically have several influential people to whisper in the ears of, but instead Jadeâs desire is grounded⌠just being able to explore nature with his twin and Azul. Theyâre the ones he chooses to spend his time with. No one else. And Jade actively, fiercely defends this simple thing despite usually not being one to resort to violence right off the bat. The only major time in the main story where Jade does this is in book 2, when be noticed that heâs being tailed and does not appreciate the violations of his privacy. Thatâs exactly what this dream sequence is. Itâs another violation of his privacy, and he detests that. You shouldnât be here interrupting his happy, chill time with his friends business associates. Itâs best for you to clear out.
I think it's also worthwhile to note that Floyd and Jade's waking sequences mirror one another. To quote myself from another post:
Something I find interesting is that the twinsâ moments of waking mirror each otherâs usual approaches to a task. Floyd usually foregoes a plan and prefers to use his fists to get the job done. However, he is slowly roused by reminiscing about his memories at NRC and the promise of being presented with a challenge. The final blow that shocks him awake is the presentation of a dream!Azul and dream!Jade who attempt to lure him deeper into the dream. Floyd doesnât fall for it; in fact, he gets mad instead, and that fury, so biting and clear, snaps him awake. The opposite is true for Jade. He is someone who meticulously plans before acting, and would rather control the circumstances and use other roundabout methods before resorting to violence. But ironically, the master manipulator Jade is the one who falls for his own dreamâs manipulationsâall because he trusts himself above all else. He only wakes up because of a very strong physical force (ie Sebekâs UM) striking him. Prior to this, Jade was putting up a very good fight and the blows be was taking were not sufficient to wake fully him. So⌠Floyd, the brother who prefers brawns, woke up after reflecting and experiencing strong cognitive dissonance between his fake reality and bis true reality. Jade, the brother who prefers brains, woke up after being smacked the right amount. They woke up after experiencing an intense shock related to what is essentially the opposite of their preferred problem solving strategies.
And last but not least, Azul!
Weâve arrived at what I think is the juiciest part to dissect on the subject of the Octatrioâs friendship. To start off with, everyone suspects that Azulâs dream will be one in which he is a highly successful businessman with Mostro Lounge as a chain with even more locations stretching as far as the Coral Seaâs depths. That isnât the case though! They quickly come to learn that Azul is the leader of Golden Trident, a reigning Coral Rush team. In this dreamâs reality Azul was always popular and well-liked. Because he was never bullied, he never started up his shady business in middle school and thus never attracted the interest of the twins. Notably, Jade and Floyd still exist in the dream (as Azul remembers the Leeches from elementary school), but they never got close.
Before we get into the Octatrioâs dynamics, I want to say that the setup of this dream already tells us that a lot of Azulâs desire to become a successful business owner really stems from the longing to be accepted as he is. He uses his businesses and accumulation of contracts to reinforce and inform his self worth. Azul has formed a false belief and identity entering around the concept of success and likability equating to talent and material goods. This explains why heâs so fixated in his public image and being perceived as smart, confident, reliable, and trustworthy, and why he loses it so quickly when heâs denied his collection of golden contracts. Azul is insecure as heck about his shortcomings (athleticism being one of them) and the dream may be latching onto that, as well as his desire to be liked by his peers, to overcompensate.
A little thing I'd like to call attention to is that Jade refuses to divulge the private details of Azul's past in which he was bullied. This is significant because most other instances of the twins bringing up Azul's past usually results in them making fun of him for it and continuing to rag on him to the point where Azul becomes annoyed and tells them to quit it/reminds them that they swore to not talk about it. In those other instances though, the twins never tread that far; they'll at most comment about how different Azul looked or acted back then. They never went so far as to point out how badly he was bullied and here we see Jade respecting Azul's privacy by vocalizing that he refuses to release that information. And this JADE we're talking about, the one who has zero qualms with scoping out prospective new students for their personal info so Azul can later hold it against them (Jade Ceremonial Robes vignettes). Jade even blackmails older students to attain what he wants (Ortho Athletic Gear vignette). It says a lot that, when given the option to openly blab about what Azul experienced and have a laugh about it, Jade clams up.
sdjbaslidbasib OKAY I GOT SIDETRACKED, BACK TO AZUL'S DREAM. So he remembers the Leeches from elementary school, meaning that their existence was not entirely purged from his dream world. It's just a different timeline of events since he wasn't bullied in this reality. Azul is quite friendly to the twins and invites them to join his Coral Rush team at his mother's restaurant for a celebratory dinner. When we arrive at the restaurant, Azul and his team mates start to make fun of the land creatures for very similar things that he actually got bullied for in the waking world. (For example, being clumsy and uncoordinated in their swimming.) He's no longer the bullied, he is a bully. In a twisted way, Azul is getting validation of his own identity by looking down on others; this mirrors his behavior pre-OB in book 3, as he also mistreated his anemone'd peers back then. Tellingly, the only people he doesn't bully are... that's right, Jade and Floyd. Azul instead asks them to play Coral Rush with him. Again, this parallels what we saw in book 3: Azul is asking the twins to essentially "join" him in the midst of him abusing his power and lording over others. He still cares deeply about Jade and Floyd's approval specifically. Nowhere is this demonstrated so clearly as the method by which the twins finally get Azul to start questioning the construct of the dream. They start smashing up the restaurant but then grow bored and make as though they're going to casually leave. That triggers a memory from book 3 in which Azul is angrily shouting about how he'll always be alone. Alone. That's what Azul fears, being that lonely little octopus crying in his pot. That's why he's surrounded by adoring team members and fans in his dream. That's why he breaks down emotionally and OBs after the twins refuse to hand over their UMs to him in book 3. That's why he becomes distraught enough to shake the dream at the suggestion that Jade and Floyd, his two closest friends, are threatening to leave him. In book 4, Azul tries to be cool and play off this fear as the inevitable, that he's fully aware that the Leeches will discard him if he stops being entertaining to them, and that he's prepared for that when it happens. But... is that really the truth, given how Azul reacts in book 7? Everything leading up to this moment seems to imply Azul was just lying to himself, perhaps in an attempt to quell his own anxieties about the possibility. And given how Azul is shown to be calculated in cultivating a put-together public persona, I would not be shocked to learn that. It wouldn't make him seem strong or confident if he displayed weakness or fear over losing his right-hand men. I don't even know that he's purposefully telling a lie. It could very well be something Azul tells himself and believes in, but deep down he cannot truly know how emotional he would get if it ever happened.
As soon as Azul starts to wake, the mermobs of his Coral Rush team are the ones who come in and pull him deeper into the dream. Interesting to have just mobs doing this rather than a dream!Jade or dream!Floyd, given how important they seem to be to Azul. Maybe that's just how the surface level of the dream works? Like, it prioritizes lavishing Azul with general attention rather than the attention of two specific people since, in this dream's reality, Azul never bonded with Jade and Floyd (so those two wouldn't be as convincing?).
When Azul is being dragged into the darkness, Jade and Floyd don't go after him. Instead, they kinda just sit back and claim it's Azul's choice to dream more deeply so who are they to interfere? It takes some convincing from Ortho to convince the twins to pursue Azul into the next layer of the dream--but after the twins depart, Ortho wonders if Jade and Floyd being this cold is actually their way of showing trust. This sort of behavior is why I stress so often that we cannot take what the Octatrio do and say at face value all of the time. They have completely different ways of expressing that they care, and they don't always mean what they insist they mean. (KEEP THIS IN MIND BECAUSE IT COMES BACK INTO PLAY SOON.) In the second layer of Azul's dream, we revisit the events of book 3 had he been successful. He's setting that final class trip picture on fire and relishing in his total conquest of Night Raven College. Azul has ~500 golden contracts, the UMs of the other dorm leaders, and even has Crowley under his thumb--and this time, there's a dream!Jade and dream!Floyd to enjoy that victory with him. The rescue squad has to trick Azul into accidentally sanding his own contracts again, and it's that loss that finally breaks him. Again, we see how much of his own self-worth and value Azul places in that which he collects. It all ties back to that fear of not having anything of worth--not even allies to call his own--if he loses what he believes makes him desirable. At this point, Azul begins to sink into that final layer of his dream (the part where he confronts his OB self). This time, the twins lunge after him, calling out Azul's name and instructing him to grab onto them (+ Jade tells Floyd to help him pull). UM, HELLO????? The "take my hand" imagery, that symbol of trust and connection, from all the way at the start of the game is rearing its head here đ AND YOU KNOW WHAT'S EVEN CRAZIER???? The twins just... let go after that??? But not because they don't give a crap about Azul--no, it's because they care and believe that he can fend for himself, that he's no longer a weak person who cries and needs their support to stand on his own. Jade sends him off with a "good luck" and Floyd asks of Azul to not go to hell. Azul casually says the same right back to them before descending. And, just as the twins suspected, Azul is able to win against his inner demons and return to them, safe and sound. They were right about Azul, and Ortho was right about the Leeches. For as cold as Jade and Floyd seem to act, it's actually a front for how much they care.
In the segment where Azul faces his Phantom, he cites that the weight of everything he has taken from others has made it difficult to move. Taken literally, it of course could refer to the tentacles of his merform making it hard for him to swim. Metaphorically though? It can easily mean that he can't achieve personal growth if he's burdened by the weight of his sins (stolen talents, items, etc.). These things he stole may glitter, but they are not gold and he now realizes they aren't things he actually finds valuable. Azul wants to go out there and find things of "real value". I interpret this to mean intangible things that can't really have a price put to them, things that cannot be bought in stores... like friendship, the very thing he has with the twins but failed to call it that this entire time.
Everything in these dreams, and more specifically Azul's dream, demonstrates the Octatrio's mutual respect and trust in one another. Jade and Floyd acknowledge Azul as a strong individual, and Azul's subconscious reveals that he deeply values the twins and seeks their approval even when they've been removed from the picture.

Chrisâ POV
It was nearly 3 pm, and Iâd only been awake for about an hour. Sleep didnât come easy, not with everything circling in my head, Vinceâs message, Y/nâs ultimatum, the danger Nate was in, and the weight of everything else. Vinceâs response had come through a little after 12pm, while both Y/n and I were asleep.
"Not around tonight, kid. Tomorrow at the docks. 6 pm."
Iâd stared at that message for longer than I cared to admit. Part of me had hoped Vince would meet me tonight, get this over with so I could show Y/n I was serious. But of course, nothing in this life ever worked that smoothly.
Still, Iâd tell her the moment she woke up. Iâd show her the message to prove I wasnât stalling or dragging my feet. I wanted her to see I was committed to this, to us.
I glanced over at her, still curled up against me, her breathing soft and steady. She looked peaceful, almost serene, and it made me wish I could freeze this moment. But I knew as soon as she woke up, weâd have to dive right back into the chaos.
While she slept, I lay there thinking. Vinceâs delay meant I had time, time to make things right in a different way. An idea had sparked in my mind as I scrolled aimlessly on my phone earlier. What if Y/n and I left Boston for the night? Got out of the city, out of the tension, and found some peace somewhere else, even if it was just temporary?
I opened the Airbnb app and started searching. Cape Cod seemed like the perfect spot, far enough to feel like an escape but close enough to get back if something came up. After a few minutes of scrolling, I found it, a beautiful villa near Long Pond. Modern but cozy, surrounded by trees, with a porch overlooking the water. It was available for the night, and I didnât think twice before booking it.
Next, I looked into car rentals. My car was still out of action, but I found a place downtown that had a sleek SUV I could pick up by late afternoon. Everything was falling into place, now, I just needed Y/n to agree to it.
The thought of seeing her relax, even for a little while, made me feel lighter. We both needed this, time to reconnect without the weight of everything weighing us down.
Within the next 10 minutes, she started to stir. I felt her shift against me, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she slowly woke up.
âMorning..againâ I said gently, even though it was already afternoon.
She blinked up at me, her eyes still heavy with sleep. âWhat time is it?â
âJust after threeâ I replied. âI let you sleep. You needed it.â
She sat up slightly, brushing her hair out of her face. âThree?â she said, her voice filled with mild disbelief. âI never nap that long.â
âYou needed itâ I repeated, offering her a small smile. âFeeling any better?â
âA littleâ she admitted, though I could still see the weight of last night lingering in her eyes.
I reached for my phone on the nightstand. âVince got back to me earlier onâ I said, opening the message thread and handing her the screen.
She took the phone and read his response. âTomorrowâ she said quietly.
âSix at the docksâ I confirmed. âI wanted you to see it. I didnât want you thinking I was bullshitting you.â
She nodded, handing the phone back to me. âThank youâ she said softly.
I hesitated, searching her face. âThereâs something else I wanted to ask youâ I said.
Her brow furrowed slightly. âWhat is it?â
âI was thinking.. maybe we could get out of Boston for the night. Just you and meâ I said, gauging her reaction. âI found this place in Cape Cod. Itâs near Long Pond â A villa. I already booked it but I can cancel if you want.. and I rented a car for us. We could leave in a couple of hours and be back tomorrow afternoon before the meeting.â
Her eyes widened slightly in surprise. âCape Cod?â she echoed.
âYeahâ I said, nodding. âI thought it might be good for us to get away for a bit. No distractions, no tension, just us.â
She didnât respond right away, and I could see her mind turning over the idea.
âI know itâs a lotâ I added, âbut I just.. I want to give you something good. After everything, you deserve it.â
She looked at me, her expression softening. âYou really think we can just.. leave?â
âFor the night yeahâ I said. âEverything else will still be here when we get back. But maybe, for a few hours, we can forget about it all. What do you think?â
She hesitated for a moment longer before finally nodding. âOkayâ she said quietly.
A smile spread across my face, relief washing over me. âOkayâ I repeated, already grabbing my phone to confirm the car rental.
âThank you, Chrisâ she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I glanced at her, catching the faint smile on her lips. âThank me after we get thereâ I said, leaning over to press a kiss to her forehead.
For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt a sliver of hope. Maybe we couldnât fix everything in one night, but we could start.
Y/nâs POV
Chrisâs idea to escape for the night had caught me completely off guard, but the more I thought about it, the more it felt like exactly what I needed. A break from the suffocating weight of everything going on, a moment to breathe and just be with him.
As he finished explaining the plan, I nodded. âOkayâ I said softly. âLetâs do it.â
Chrisâs face lit up, and he immediately grabbed his phone. âIâll get an Uber to the rental place nowâ he said. âPack a bag for the night, Iâll get mine and Iâll come straight back for you.â
âOkayâ I replied, already making a mental list of what to bring.
He leaned in to kiss me gently on the forehead. âIâll be back soonâ he said before heading to my balcony door out of habit. âYou can go out the front door now you knowâ I laughed.
âI like this wayâ Chris turns and smirks at me, closing the balcony door behind him. I watch him through the glass balcony door, climbing across into the treehouse. The fairy lights still in there flick on and off three times. Chris popped his head out and gave me a small smile before climbing down to ground level.
Once he was gone, I stood there for a moment, processing everything. The idea of leaving felt a little surreal, but I shook off the hesitation and moved to my closet. I grabbed a small overnight bag and started packing the essentials: pyjamas, a change of clothes, toiletries, and my phone charger. I hesitated for a moment before adding a sweater, Cape Cod could get chilly at night.
As I zipped up the bag, I realized I should probably let my parents know Iâd be away for the night. Sheâd left a note earlier saying sheâd be out for the day, but I didnât want her worrying if she came home and I wasnât there.
I grabbed my phone and dialed her number. It rang a few times before she answered.
âHi, sweetheartâ she said, her voice cheerful.
âHi, Momâ I replied. âI just wanted to let you know Iâll be away for the night. Chris and I are going to Cape Cod. Just for a little getaway.â
There was a brief pause before she spoke again. âOh, thatâs lovely, honey! You two deserve some time to yourselves. But it looks like I wonât see you for a week, then.â
I blinked, confused. âWhat do you mean?â
âYour dad and I decided to book a last minute tripâ she said, her tone a mix of excitement and nonchalance. âA bridal convention came up in Cuba, and we thought weâd turn it into a bit of a holiday. We fly out early tomorrow morning.â
âCuba?â I repeated, still trying to wrap my head around it.
âYesâ she confirmed. âWeâll be gone for a week. I was going to tell you at dinner tonight, but I guess this works too.â
âOhâ I said, unsure how else to respond. âWell, have a great trip, then.â
âThank you, sweetheart. You have fun with Chris, okay? And make sure the studio stays a float while Iâm gone!â
âI willâ I assured her.
After we hung up, I sat on the edge of my bed for a moment. Mom and Dad in Cuba? That was unexpected, but I supposed it didnât really matter. Iâd have the house to myself for the week, which was rare.
I finished packing my bag, lost in a day dream until the sound of a car pulling up outside snapped me out of my thoughts. I glanced out the window and saw Chris parked outside in the rental car.
I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs to meet him. Whatever this night away held, I hoped it would be the reset we both desperately needed.
Chris opened the passenger door for me with a small smile, taking my bag and tossing it gently into the backseat before I got in. The rental car smelled like fresh leather, and the interior was pristine, not too far off his usual car. I buckled in, glancing over as he settled into the driverâs seat, his hands gripping the wheel confidently.
As we pulled away from my house, Chris glanced at me with a grin. âIâve got you some snacks for the trip. Theyâre in the back seatâ he said, nodding toward the rear.
I twisted around and spotted a paper bag filled with goodies. Curiosity piqued, I reached for it, pulling it onto my lap. Inside, there were all my favorites: a bag of salt and vinegar chips, a chocolate bar, a can of Fanta, and even a small bag of gummy bears.
I laughed softly. âYou really thought of everything, didnât you?â
âHad toâ he replied, a playful smirk on his lips. âCanât have you complaining about being hungry halfway there.â
I unwrapped the chocolate bar and broke off a piece, popping it into my mouth. âI wasnât going to complainâ I teased. âBut this definitely earns you some bonus points.â
Chris chuckled, his eyes flicking toward me briefly before returning to the road. âGood to know Iâm earning points.â
The car hummed softly as we merged onto the highway, the city slowly giving way to more open spaces. I leaned back in my seat, letting the scenery blur past us. The tension that had been weighing me down since last night started to lift, piece by piece.
We fell into a comfortable silence, the only sounds coming from the car engine and the low hum of the radio playing a soft indie tune. I opened the bag of gummy bears and offered some to Chris. He plucked out a green one and popped it into his mouth without taking his eyes off the road.
âSo, this villaâ I said, breaking the silence. âWhatâs it like?â
âNiceâ he said, his tone casual. âBig porch, private access to Long Pond. The pictures made it look cozy, thought itâd be perfect for us.â
I smiled at the thought, imagining us sitting by the water, the world finally feeling quiet and still for a moment.
The drive stretched on, but with Chris beside me and my favorite snacks in hand, it didnât feel long at all. By the time we reached Cape Cod, the late afternoon sun was casting golden hues over the landscape, and the tension Iâd been carrying felt like a distant memory.
The villa was stunning, much bigger than I expected. It was perched near the edge of Long Pond, its pristine white exterior glowing softly in the evening sunlight. I glanced over at Chris as he parked the car, his hands still on the wheel as he looked out at the villa with a faint smirk.
âWowâ I murmured. âThis is.. a lot.â
Chris chuckled, turning off the engine. âThought you deserved a little extra.â
We got out of the car, and I grabbed my bag as Chris walked around to join me. The air smelled fresh, carrying the faint scent of the lake and pine trees. The villa's large porch wrapped around the front, and I could already see adirondack chairs with big pillows on them, set up facing the water.
Chris unlocked the door, holding it open for me. Inside, the space was bright and airy, with high ceilings and large windows that overlooked the pond. The hardwood floors gleamed, and the furniture was modern yet cozy.
âFour bedrooms?â I laughed as I peeked into the hallway.Â
Chris grinned, tossing his bag onto the couch. âYeah, thought we could have optionsâ
We walked through the villa, exploring every room. The kitchen was spacious, with marble countertops and state of the art appliances. The living room had a massive fireplace and a TV mounted above it. Upstairs, the master bedroom had a king sized bed, a balcony, and an en suite bathroom with a huge soaking tub.
âAlright, this is way too fancy for usâ I joked, sitting on the edge of the bed.
Chris leaned against the doorway, watching me with a playful glint in his eyes. âNothingâs too fancy for you.â
I rolled my eyes but couldnât help the warmth that spread through me at his words.
After dropping off our bags, Chris clapped his hands together. âThereâs an arcade down the roadâ he said. âWanna go? Thought we could make it a little date night.â
I glanced at the clock. It was nearing 6pm, and the idea of a carefree evening sounded perfect. âYeah, why not?â
âGoodâ he said, flashing me a grin. âLetâs head out.â
We left the villa and made our way to the arcade, a small, charming spot lit up with neon signs. Inside, the place was buzzing with energy, the sound of coins clinking and games chiming filling the air.
Chris exchanged a few bills for tokens and handed me half. âLetâs see if you can beat me at air hockeyâ he challenged, his grin widening. âReady to lose?â he teased, his tone dripping with playful confidence.
âLose? Oh, youâre in for itâ I shot back, already eyeing the air hockey table.
We headed straight there, and Chris slid me a paddle, smirking as he dropped the puck onto the table. âYou sure youâre ready for this?â
âI was born readyâ I replied, bracing myself.
The game started off evenly matched, the puck zipping back and forth across the table as we both focused intently. Chris scored the first point, and his triumphant grin was maddening.
âLucky shotâ I said, narrowing my eyes.
âPure skillâ he countered with a wink.
I leaned into the game, determined to even the score. The tableâs vibrations buzzed under my palms as I deflected his shots and sent the puck flying back toward him. My persistence paid off, I managed to sneak a goal past him, and my celebration was nothing short of theatrical.
âOh I have this one!â I declared, laughing.
He narrowed his eyes playfully. âNot a chance.â
The match was intense, filled with laughter, playful banter, and a few âaccidentalâ distractions from Chris. By the end, he edged me out with one last goal, throwing his arms up in exaggerated victory.
âChampion of the universeâ he announced dramatically, pointing to himself.
âChampion of being annoyingâ I retorted, laughing.
Next, we moved to the skee ball lanes. I took a moment to examine my lane, plotting my strategy. Chris stood beside me, casually rolling his first ball and landing an effortless 50 point shot.
âNo wayâ I muttered, trying not to let him psych me out.
I took my first roll and managed to land in the 40 point slot, earning a small cheer from Chris. âAlright, alright. Not badâ he teased.
The game turned into a full on competition, with each of us trying to outdo the other. Chris had a knack for the high scores, but I managed to hit the elusive 100 point slot twice, earning myself some serious bragging rights.
âLooks like Iâm not the only champion around hereâ I said smugly, watching as Chris missed his last roll.
He shook his head with a laugh. âBeginnerâs luck.â
We moved on to bowling, a tiny alley tucked into the corner of the arcade. Chris insisted on going first, confidently rolling his ball down the lane. It curved slightly and knocked down seven pins.
âDecentâ I said, grabbing my ball.
My first roll was a gutter ball, much to Chrisâs amusement. He didnât even try to hide his laughter.
âI donât have the bumpers up this shit is hard!â I said while laughing, lining up for my second roll. This time, I managed to knock down eight pins. âComeback seasonâ I declared with a grin.
The game was a rollercoaster of strikes, spares, and the occasional gutter ball, on my behalf.Â
After bowling, Chris pulled me toward a claw machine filled with plush toys. He studied the prizes like a man on a mission, his eyes locking onto a large white teddy bear holding a red rose.
âYou want it?â he asked, already feeding tokens into the machine.
I smiled. âItâs cute, but those things are rigged.â
âNot when Iâm in chargeâ he said confidently.
I watched as he maneuvered the claw with precision, lowering it carefully over the bear. The claw gripped it tightly and began lifting, and I held my breath.
To my surprise, it made it all the way to the chute without dropping. Chris reached in, pulling out the teddy bear with a triumphant grin.
âFor youâ he said, handing it to me with a flourish.
I hugged the bear, unable to stop smiling. âYouâre full of surprises, you know that?â
Chris shrugged, a playful glint in his eyes. âWhat can I say? I aim to impress.â
We left the arcade with our tickets redeemed, my new teddy bear in hand, and hearts lighter than theyâd been in days. As we made our way back to the villa, the sun was long gone, the moon casting a glistening glow over the lake.
We stepped into the villa, the lingering excitement from the arcade still buzzing between us. I set the teddy bear on the couch, its red rose contrasting beautifully against the neutral tones of the living room. Chris stretched his arms above his head, his hoodie riding up slightly to reveal a hint of his toned stomach, before plopping onto one of the oversized armchairs.
"Alright" he said, pulling out his phone, "Whatâs the plan for dinner? Fancy some Uber Eats?"
I smiled, kicking off my shoes as I sat cross legged on the couch. âHonestly, carbonara sounds amazing right now. And maybe a bottle of wine wouldnât go a miss.â
Chris chuckled, already scrolling through options. âCarbonara and wine it is. Anything else? Breadsticks? Dessert?â
I tilted my head, considering. âBreadsticks, definitely. And maybe some tiramisu if they have it.â
He nodded, his fingers flying over the screen. âGot it. Youâre lucky you have me, your personal gourmet delivery expert.â
I laughed, leaning back into the cushions. âOh, is that what you are now? Adding it to the resume?â
âAbsolutelyâ he said with mock seriousness. âItâs a highly sought after skill. You understand how many people would love to have such qualifications?â
A few minutes later, he set his phone down on the coffee table. âFoodâs ordered. Should be here in about thirty minutes.â
âPerfectâ I said, stretching my legs out in front of me. âThat gives us time to pick out a movie or something.â
Chris raised an eyebrow. âOr we could just sit out on the deck, enjoy the view for a bit while we wait.â
I glanced toward the sliding glass doors leading to the deck. âYouâre right that sounds nice.â
We grabbed a couple of blankets from the linen closet and stepped out onto the deck. The air was cool, but not cold, carrying the faint scent of pine and the water. Chris draped one of the blankets over my shoulders before wrapping the other around himself.
âYou knowâ he said, leaning on the wooden railing, âitâs kind of crazy how peaceful it is out here.â
I joined him, resting my arms on the railing as I looked out over the lake. âItâs like another world. Hard to believe itâs just an hour and a bit out of the city.â
Chris nodded, his expression thoughtful. âMakes you think, doesnât it? About what itâd be like to live somewhere like this all the time.â
I turned to look at him, my heart tugging at the sincerity in his voice. âWould you want that?â
He shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips. âMaybe someday. For now, though, Iâm happy just being here with you.â
The warmth in his words settled over me, a quiet comfort that chased away the lingering tension from the past few days.
Before we could dive further into the conversation, the soft buzz of his phone broke the moment. He glanced at the screen and grinned. âDinnerâs here. Be right back.â
As he disappeared round the front to grab the food while I stayed on the porch deck, I noticed a heater behind us on the wall, and the gas fire pit next to the table. Chris was too distracted by trying to make everything perfect to even notice them so I decided to turn them on just for a bit of extra heat. Â
As Chris came back onto the deck, his arms full with the Uber Eats bag and wine bottle, his face lit up in surprise. The orange and yellow glow from the heater and the fire pit bathed the space in a warm, cozy light.
"We have a fire pit?" he asked, a grin spreading across his face.
"We do have a fire pit" I said, laughing. "I thought we could make the most of it and eat out here. Itâs too nice not to."
He shook his head, still smiling. âYou always think of everything.â
Chris set the bag on the table while I stepped inside to grab plates. On my way back, I turned on the TV mounted on the wall of the deck, connected my phone to the Spotify app, and shuffled my liked songs.
âThis is a vibeâ Chris said, nodding appreciatively as he started unpacking the food.
I set the plates down and helped him dish out the carbonara, adding the breadsticks and tiramisu to the table. Chris popped the cork on the wine bottle and poured us each a glass, the flickering light from the fire pit reflecting in the deep white liquid.
We sat down, the heater above us keeping the cool night air at bay. The sound of the lake lapping against the shore mixed with the music, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
âThis is really niceâ I said, taking a bite of my carbonara. The creamy, rich sauce was exactly what Iâd been craving.
Chris leaned back in his chair, his plate nearly empty already. âItâs perfect. Iâm glad we came here.â
I looked at him, the golden light from the fire illuminating his features. He seemed more relaxed, the usual tension in his shoulders gone for the moment.
As the last bite of carbonara disappeared from my plate, the opening chords of Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra filled the air, smooth and timeless. My heart skipped a beat as the familiar melody swirled around us.
âOh, I love this songâ I said, the words slipping out before I could think. It had always been one of my favorites.
I leaned back in my chair, letting the music wash over me. âI want this to be my first dance song at my weddingâ I added, almost wistfully.
Chris, who had been slowly finishing his wine, looked at me with a soft smile. âFirst dance, huh?â he repeated, as if savoring the thought.
Without another word, he stood up, his eyes never leaving mine. His hand stretched out toward me. âDance with me.â
I blinked in surprise, my pulse quickening. "Here? Now?"
Chris nodded, the smile on his face playful but sincere. âWhy not?â
A smile tugged at my lips. âOkayâ I said, standing and placing my hand in his.
He gently pulled me toward him, guiding me to the center of the deck where the soft glow of the fire pit illuminated the space around us. The cool night air seemed to soften, like the world around us faded into the background as the song played on.
His hands settled on my waist, and mine naturally rested on his shoulders. We swayed to the music, the sound of Sinatraâs voice filling the space between us. There was something intimate about the moment, about the way he held me close, as though we were the only two people in the world.
âI really want to marry you one day, Y/nâ Chris whispered in my ear, his voice steady but filled with raw emotion. âIt feels so right.â
His words hung in the air between us, and I couldnât help the way my heart swelled in response. It was like every doubt, every fear I had felt about the future, about us, suddenly melted away. There was something about this moment, the way he held me, the way he spoke so honestly, that made everything feel certain.
I pulled back just enough to look at him, searching his eyes for any hint of hesitation, but all I saw was sincerity. His hands remained on my back, steady and sure, and I could feel the weight of his words, the truth in them.
âI-â I started, but my voice caught. My chest felt tight, overwhelmed by the rush of emotions. I didnât know what to say. Part of me felt like I should say something grand, something that matched the enormity of what heâd just shared, but the truth was, I was overwhelmed in the best possible way.
Instead, I just smiled, letting my heart speak for me as I reached up and kissed him softly on the lips. It was simple, but it was everything.
âMe tooâ I whispered when I pulled away. âIt feels right.â
Chris leaned in, his hand still cradling my cheek as his lips met mine. It wasnât just a kiss, it was the kind that made the world fall away, leaving only the two of us. His other arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me closer as if he couldnât bear for there to be even an inch of space between us.
I melted into him, my hands resting against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was the kind of kiss that spoke a thousand unsaid words, every emotion pouring out in the simplest but most profound way.
When we finally pulled back, our foreheads rested against each other, and I opened my eyes to find his already gazing into mine. The firelight danced across his face, highlighting every feature I adored. His eyes held a softness I rarely saw, a vulnerability that made my heart ache in the best way.
âIâm in love with youâ Chris said, his voice barely above a whisper, but each word landed with the weight of something undeniable.
My breath hitched, the sincerity in his tone sent butterflies swirling in my stomach. I could feel tears prickling at the corners of my eyes, not from sadness, but from the overwhelming rush of happiness and love.
âIâm in love with you tooâ I replied, my voice trembling slightly as I smiled at him. âSo much.â
Chrisâs lips curved into that lopsided smile I adored, and he brushed a thumb over my cheek, wiping away the tear that had escaped. âYou donât know how happy that makes meâ he said, his voice thick with emotion.
We stood there for a moment longer, wrapped in each otherâs arms, letting the weight of our words settle. The fire crackled softly in the background, Strangers in the Night played on, the timeless melody floating around us as we held each other, the worries of the past days melting away.
In that moment, everything felt perfect. Nothing else mattered, not the chaos waiting for us back in Boston, not the uncertainty of what tomorrow would bring. It was just us, standing under the stars, wrapped in the kind of love that made the world feel small and infinite all at once.
a/n: THEYRE SO CUTE I CAAAAAANT . If you've never heard this song before please listen so you get the full feels!!! Part 20 tomorrow. (Hopefully 6pm GMT)

Secondo x F!Reader - first meetings, brooding, flirting, Secondo's POV. Next in the snippet series...Secondo visits Italia for unpleasant business. Could his stay be the change he needs? @writingjourney
Dark sunglasses cover his eyes, and his expression is blank as the pallbearers walk his motherâs casket down the long aisle. It had been many, many years since Secondo had been in a Catholic Church, and this, his motherâs funeral, would be the last. A procession follows, faces heâs never seen before, and he vaguely wonders if they are cousins, or even siblings. Do they wonder who he is? The long lost son of a woman left in shame after Nihil left his wicked touch on her. Secondo hopes she lived a good life. He thinks she did, quietly watching when he was old enough to handle his own affairs, a silent benefactor. He stands when the last of them leave, his eyes staring scornfully at Jesus on the cross. Where was his grace, when all was broken?
He gets back to the abbey nestled in the hills of the Italian countryside long after dark, having spent several hours wandering the small village of his youth. With a glass of wine in hand, he steps out onto the balcony of his room, looking out over the olive grove the Siblings tend to. The Italian branch of the Ministry sells their own olive oil, a lucrative business that has kept them afloat since he was a boy. It gave him a deeper appreciation for his country, and the beauty that can be grown from the ground and used in their food.
Secondo checks his phone, his thumb scrolling past updates from Sweden, a âme meâ his brother sent, deleted, and of his particular interest, the latest on the restoration of a first edition of The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot, a book for his personal collection. He isnât eager to get back. Tensions are high amongst the Clergy, their dissatisfaction with his younger brother apparent. They simply do not like that Terzo doesnât bow.
Secondoâs time as Papa is well remembered, and bitterly ended. Too many parties, too many nights trying to drink his life away. Underappreciating what he had until it was gone. He gave Terzo the papacy knowing his brother carries a vision, and he is eager to see it realized. But like a true Emeritus, tragedy is never far. Secondo looks up at the sky and finds the North Star, and he wonders if Primo is in his observatory, looking at the same star. Italy may be where he was born, but Secondo isnât home. Not when home are three men that in equal parts infuriate him, and make him fight harder every day. He tosses the wine over the edge, setting the glass on the ledge.
âSatan Christ on a stick!â A voice shouts from below. Secondo leans over the balcony railing, looking down in shock at the Sister of Sin now covered in his spilled red wine. She shakes her hands, droplets flying from her fingertips and she looks up, her brow furrowing as she spots him. âPapa,â she says. âIâm wet.â
Well, thatâs not the first time heâs heard those words, but not necessarily in this context. Secondoâs mind works a mile a minute to catch up with everything thatâs happened in the last few seconds, and he huffs out a small laugh. âSatan Christ?â He asks.Â
âItâs a creative way to swear, but I think appropriate,â she answers, looking down at her light sweater now stained red. âI hope this was cheap.âÂ
Amusement is quickly replaced by regret, and Secondo glances around as if a rag would appear out of thin air. âA moment, Suora. I will be down,â he calls, hurrying into his room and wrenching open the linen closet. He pulls out a towel, grimacing at the light shade. That will be two things he will have to get a burgundy stain out of. He grunts, putting a hand on his back on his way to the front door. Far too much running around for his age, especially so late into the night.Â
Secondo steps outside into the night time air, his eyes scanning the place near his balcony where the wine covered sister had been standing. âSuora?â
âHere,â she says, coming around the corner, her sweater removed and in her hands. Secondo pauses, his eyes quickly taking in the sight of her cream colored camisole. He clears his throat, offering her the towel, and he watches with a small frown as she squeezes the sweater between it.Â
âDo you have something to say, Papa?â She asks, watching him with an amused quirk of her eyebrow.Â
Secondo straightens, his frown deepening, and he tilts his head in atonement. âForgive me, Suora. I should not be so careless in disposing of my beverages.â He glances away, an uncomfortable itch climbing up his spine. Today has not improved, and here he is, middle-aged man, and her superior, making a fool of himself.Â
âI didnât mean that, although the apology is appreciated. You were looking at me like I was doing something wrong.â She clenches the fabric of her sweater between the edges of the towel, and he waves his hands, reaching for it.Â
âYou are doing something wrong,â he says gruffly. âDo not squeeze. Blot. We will have to get this under a cold tap.â She laughs, and he glances at her, blowing a breath between his teeth as he begs Lucifer for patience.Â
âYou seem familiar withâŚstains,â she says, circling around him, her arms crossed over her chest. Her hair is rustled by the evening breeze, and Secondo pauses, staring at it fluttering and catching between her lips. She blows it away, and he swallows.
âRed stains in particular,â he murmurs, returning to the task at hand.
âThatâs something a murderer would say,â she responds, her lips curled at the corners, her smile mysterious. It reminds him of the Mona Lisa.
âThere are plenty of rumors about my family, Suora. Choose one,â he says with a flash of teeth. She tilts her head in response, and they stare at each other for a moment. Secondo is used to intimidating people. He doesnât want to intimidate people. His looks, his demeanor, something somewhere went wrong, and he is paying for it. He gets to watch his brothers be treated like gold by the Siblings where he is dulled copper, dented and used. Secondo garners more fear than respect, and that is acceptable. Or so he tells himself.
âI like the one where youâre all vampires,â she says.
He laughs. A real, genuine laugh, and it makes her smile. Heâs caught in that smile, so sweet and full of joy, and it makes him warm. She isnât intimidated, sheâs silly, she cusses in the strangest ways. Is it childish to think this woman is a gift from his mother? Someone real, someone who isnât afraid.
âCome inside,â he says, holding her wrinkled sweater with a long-suffering sigh. âWe shall see if we can save it. I am sorry for drenching you. And tell me about this vampire rumor, will you?â
She follows after him, passing through the open double doors into a hallway lit by old, metal chandeliers that cast a soft yellow glow. âIâll tell you plenty if you tell me what compelled you to throw your wine off the balcony,â she says.
Secondo leads her up a flight of stairs, his hand gripping the railing, his knees aching from all the walking he did earlier that day. âIt displeased me,â he says, unwilling to unload his inner turmoil on a woman he just met.Â
âRemind me to stay in your good graces then,â she says, snickering a laugh. He joins her. It feels good to laugh.Â
âAh, do not worry,â he says. âMy knees cannot take another trip down the stairs.â

Length: 3700 words
Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Female OC
This story is part of the Beer Boy and Sugar universe but can be read on its own! Adult Education masterlist
Seriously, who let Jake on my masterlist!? Banner by @mak-32
Jessica couldn't remember the last time she felt this comfortable and confident around someone else. She had grown into the understanding that her own company was the best company for her, and especially for the past year, she had kept contact with most people to a minimum. Keeping them at a professional arm's length as much as possible. But when she was with Jake, she didn't feel like she needed to be quiet and keep her head down to survive.Â
"I got pretty much every kind of snack for today," he told her as they stood in his kitchen. "Just because I don't know all of your favorites yet."
Yet. That was the second time he'd made her heart flutter like this. He also told her he was getting attached to her. And now his cheeks were a little pink as she picked up some chips and salsa.
"I told you I'm not picky as long as you have Sam Adams for me."
"I'll make sure I always have it," he promised as he took two bottles out of the refrigerator and followed her to the living room. "You relax and shout to me if anyone scores, okay?"
"Where are you going?" she asked from her spot on the couch as he set the beers down and left again. She noticed the stack of journals she'd given him were sitting near the corner of the coffee table.Â
"Just going to add everything to the crockpot so we can have dinner later."
Jessica settled back into the cushions and watched him walk away, his shirt hugging his broad shoulders. He was perhaps even more handsome than Brian Conley, which was something she would have never thought possible. When she and Brian were sleeping together, she thought he was the most attractive man she'd ever seen. Ten years older. Gray hair mixed in with chestnut brown. Icy blue eyes. But now she was coming around to the idea of someone her own age, with lighter hair and pretty green eyes.Â
When Jake returned a minute later and settled down right next to her, even though there was plenty of room, she asked, "How old are you?"
He took the jar of salsa from her hand and opened it as he said, "Thirty. I'd ask you how old you are, but my mom would be really disappointed if she ever learned that I did. So if you'd like to tell me, that's fine, but I'm not asking."
Jessica laughed as she opened the bag of chips and curled her legs up onto the couch so her thigh was resting on his. "How would your mom ever find out anyway?"
Jake scoffed as he scooped salsa onto a chip. "You don't think she's going to want to meet my girlfriend?" He shoved the whole thing into his mouth before grabbing more. "She'd get the information out of you somehow, I'm sure."
She sat there quietly and broke a chip in half before nibbling on it as she tried not to smile. She hadn't been in a relationship since right after grad school. Most guys didn't seem inclined to want to do more than sleep with her. Her brand of nerdy was a hard sell. She was smarter than almost everyone else, she was introverted, and she preferred playing Dungeons & Dragons or reading a book to going out. Well, excluding an evening at Chippy's.Â
"I'm thirty one," she said softly with a grin.Â
"Perfect," he replied, casually scooping more salsa onto a chip. "I also wouldn't be upset if you told me if you bought that green underwear you were looking at on your phone."
She started nibbling on the other half of the chip as Jake's arm rubbed hers. "Maybe." He was looking at her out of the corner of his eye before turning away from the football game completely to face her. "Okay... yes, I bought the set," she said, biting her lip. "You're missing the game."
"I don't really care about the game all that much. Like I said before, I think I've gotta be the world's worst Longhorns fan."
"You're terrible," she confirmed as he held out the jar of salsa for her.Â
His gaze dipped down to her lips. "Why are you so far away?" he asked softly.Â
She wanted to laugh, because she was practically sitting on his lap. Instead she leaned in and kissed his cheek as she said, "What was I thinking?" Jake's body was big and warm and cozy as he draped his arm around her shoulders. She snuggled in close to him with her cheek resting on his chest. She dipped a chip into the jar he was holding and teased him with it before she shoved it into his mouth.Â
"Thanks, Baby," he murmured as he chewed it up. Then she took the jar and the chips and set them on the table and grabbed the beers instead. They sat cuddled up, sipping the drinks, and Jake was actually less annoying when the Longhorns scored than she had anticipated. She just relaxed into him as the condensation from her bottle dripped occasionally onto his jeans, but he didn't complain, so she didn't move.Â
"You want another one now?" he asked, taking her empty bottle in the same hand as his and kissing her hair.Â
"No," she whispered. "And don't get up. I'm comfortable."
"Okay," he replied softly, leaning forward just enough to let the bottles drop with a thud onto the area rug.Â
Jessica pushed him back with her palm on his abs, and she bit her lip as she felt his muscles. "I said don't move."
"You're in charge, Reedy."
--------------------------
This was all wildly thrilling for Jake. He was with a beautiful woman who wanted to chill on his couch and run her hand back and forth across his abs while they watched football together. He never did this kind of thing. Ever. This was indulgent in a way he didn't usually operate.Â
When Jessica looked up at him through her eyelashes, he reached over and adjusted her glasses. Then he felt her hand dip inside his shirt and come to rest just above his jeans, fingers stroking almost to the point of tickling. And he wasn't even watching the game. Maybe it was halftime. He wasn't sure. It didn't matter.Â
Why did he suddenly want a girlfriend so badly that he kept thinking about it? He was thinking about how this could be a normal weekend for him. And how he could have Jessica curled up with him like this in bed.Â
He was staring. He knew he was. But so was she. And her small hand was moving across his skin in the most addicting way. "Reedy," he whispered, and that was all it took. She planted her hand with her fingertips inside his jeans, and Jake groaned as she kissed him. When her hand slid up his abs to his chest and pulled his shirt up with it, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her until she was in his lap.Â
In the deepest recesses of his brain, Jake knew he couldn't let anything too wild happen today. Just kissing. Just like this. But when he let his hand trail down to Jessica's round ass, he realized the fabric of her leggings was thin and that he could feel her thong through it. It felt lacy. He wanted to know what it looked like.Â
He palmed her a little rougher, until she broke the kiss and rubbed herself against him. "Oh, Jessica," he groaned, taking in the sight of her wide eyes and crooked glasses. She was raking her fingers slowly through his chest hair while Jake squeezed her butt. He couldn't think straight as her lips met his again, and then his hand was up the back of her shirt.
Her skin was so damn soft, and Jake was not going to be able to conceal the fact that he was getting hard for her when her knee kept nudging him through his jeans. Her feather soft kisses were becoming more demanding as she brought her other hand up to ruin his tidy hair. And fuck if he could control himself.Â
In an instant, she was on her back along the couch with Jake on top of her. She let out a surprised giggle as her head came to rest on the cushion. "This okay?" he asked, kissing along her jaw.Â
Jessica responded by spreading her thighs so he could settle against her, and Jake had to keep reminding himself that this was a marathon, not a sprint. But her body was warm and inviting, and she was so responsive to his touch. Every gasp from her lips had him pushing his hands a little further up her sides and sucking a little harder on her neck.Â
"Jake," she moaned, rolling her hips up against him.Â
"Fuck," he gasped, one hand sliding between her back and the couch as he pushed himself against her this time. Her lips were parted, and she was digging her fingers into his shoulders. Jake moaned when she wrapped one leg around his hip. Her shirt was pushed up almost to her tits, and he wanted to taste all of her skin. But she pulled him close for another kiss, and Jake knew he had to pump the brakes.Â
He slowed it all down, easing his hand up to her back instead of her perfect ass. He let each kiss taper off until his lips were barely brushing hers. And then he felt her leg slide down from his hip as she took his hand and guided it further up her shirt until he was touching her bra. She chased his lips as he pulled away from her, and now she looked embarrassed.
"Jessica. Not a horny quickie on the couch. Not for our first time together."
"Okay. Right," she whispered, her fingers tracing along his neck. "Do you want to go to your bedroom?"
He kissed her cheek and said, "I think we should save it for another day."
As he slowly let his hand trail down her tummy, she turned her face toward the TV and laughed a little awkwardly. "Is it that obvious that it's been a long time for me? I'm sure that's not the case for you."
He didn't quite know what to say. "No, it's not obvious. And no, you're not wrong," he murmured, his brow creasing as he leaned closer for a soft kiss. Had it really just been two weeks ago that he brought someone home from the bar? "But it has actually been a very long time since someone mattered like you do. So the pacing is kind of important to me."
"You're sweet." A pretty smile touched her lips, and then he let himself kiss her belly before pulling her up so she was sitting and looking at him. Her hair was a little messy, and her glasses were crooked again, and Jake was suddenly afraid he was going to fuck this all up. She adjusted her glasses with the backs of her fingers and leaned in to kiss him one time.Â
It really was halftime now, and Jake watched her stand and look through the stack of journals on the table. Her voice was still soft and breathless as she glanced at him and asked, "Where's the one with my phone number? I wanted to show you something in the article I wrote."
Jake wanted to laugh or maybe cry. This woman thought he was smart. Well, he knew he was smart, but nobody else ever seemed to care if he was. "It's in my bedroom."
"It's in your bedroom?"
"Yeah," he replied easily. "I'm keeping that one for sure. You can have the rest of the journals back, but not that one. I worked hard for that phone number."
She giggled. "You really did. And you did great. Can I get it out of your room?"
He thought he was going to respond by telling her yes, but instead he suddenly asked, "Are you seeing anyone else?"
Now her expression was surprised as she came to stand between his spread legs, and he looked up at her. "Are you asking me if I'm meeting other men at Chippy's and during my office hours?"
Jake nodded and swallowed hard as she bent at the waist and let her hands rest on his knees. "Yeah. I'm sure Chippy would be delighted to see you with someone else."
"No," she laughed. "I'm not seeing anyone else. Are you?"
"Absolutely not."
"Good." Her hands slid up to his thighs as she kissed him, which was doing nothing to help him get rid of the awkward half erection he was sporting. "Is it cool if I grab the journal from your room?"
"Yeah," he grunted. "You'll see it in there."
When he watched her walk away, he groaned and sprawled out on the couch. He needed to pull himself together, or she would definitely be taking someone else to Chippy's soon.
-----------------------------
To Jessica's immediate delight, she found the journal on Jake's nightstand. It was even folded open to the page with her article and phone number. She picked it up and headed back to the couch where he was sprawled out now with his head propped up on the pillow. Hot, needy sex had sounded delicious twenty minutes ago when he was grinding against her, but when she looked at him right now, she knew that's not what she needed. She'd had plenty of that in Brian's office and the backseat of his SUV.Â
She didn't want to think about him. Not when Jake was reaching for her hand and pulling her down on top of him like she weighed nothing. He didn't even grunt or groan as she settled chest to chest with him. Her legs were tangled with his as he wrapped his arms around her, and she tried to keep the journal from getting smashed.Â
"What do you want to talk about? I think I have the whole thing memorized," he said softly, keeping his attention on her even though the second half of the game was on.Â
"I wanted to show you how I wrote about your Super Hornets," she said, unable to stop smiling now.Â
"Yeah, I saw that. You know more about the damn things than I do, Dr. Reed."
She laughed. "I'm Dr. Reed again?"
"Jessica," he whispered in that drawl that made her heart clench as he rubbed her back. "You ever been up in one before? You wanna fly with me one day?"
She let the journal slide to the floor as she gaped at him. "Would I be allowed? I've always wanted to!"
He shrugged. "I can investigate it. Or I could always sneak you out onto the tarmac after dark so you can sit in the cockpit."
"That sounds scandalous."
"It would be," he confirmed with a smirk. "You could sit on my lap. I could show my throttle. Teach you how to use it."
Jessica felt warm as she kissed him, his hands heavy on her lower back. But it was sweet and intentional instead of rushed even though she was straddling his abs. She was always at least slightly turned on when she was around Jake, and she was starting to suspect he felt the same way. But his restraint was sexy.Â
"I like this," she whispered between soft kisses as she ran the tip of her nose up along his.Â
"Me too, Baby," he replied, and when she bit her lip and pulled away a few inches to smile, he looked like he was in awe.Â
"What?" she asked.Â
He shook his head. "I just can't believe you're into me."
She rolled her eyes. "You're handsome. Everyone is into you."
"That's not what I meant," he said with a laugh. "And you're obviously better than everyone else."
Jessica had to reel in her ridiculous grin as she threaded her fingers through his soft hair. "Hey, can I ask you something? And feel free to say no, because it's probably going to be really, very dumb, and I won't be upset if you don't want to go-"
"Yes."
She stared at him for a beat. "I didn't even ask it yet."
"I know. Whatever it is, I'm in."
Once again, he was making her feel warm inside. And he still hadn't looked at the game. "So you'll be my date for a posh fraternity fundraiser for alumni weekend?"
He pushed her hair back behind her ear and said, "I don't think posh and fraternity belong in the same sentence together, but yes. I'd love to be your date. Since we're exclusive now."
"Oh, that was smoothe Lieutenant." She found herself tracing the lettering on his shirt as her cheek came to rest on his shoulder.
"I thought so, too," he whispered. Then she dozed off on him.Â
-------------------------
Jake held Jessica while she slept, her breaths soft on his neck while he watched the end of the game. He should really get up and stir the chili, but he didn't want to disturb her. If dinner wasn't edible, he would just order a pizza instead. No big deal.Â
She finally seemed fully comfortable with him. She was letting him hold her while she napped, and she wasn't shying away from the idea of them dating. He knew there was more to the picture with the way she made him work for it and the rumors Bradshaw's wife told him about. But she was so fucking sweet, Jake didn't care about what anyone else said. And it honestly turned him on when she made him earn his privileges with her.Â
She moaned softly in her sleep and wrapped her arm around him. He was going to have to ask Bradshaw or his wife what to wear to a frat party. That's somewhere he never thought he'd be caught dead, but he found himself wanting to make Jessica happy. So exceptions could be made.Â
Suddenly she popped up with both palms planted on his chest. "I can't believe I fell asleep," she mumbled, and Jake smiled at the mark on her face from where her glasses had been pressing.Â
"You want dinner?" he asked as she sat up straddling his hips. Her shirt had slipped a bit, and he could see the strap of her bra. And honestly, this position was enough to get him going, the way her breasts were clearly pressed together inside her A&M tee. When she nodded, he scooped her up as he sat and then stood.Â
She slid down his body with a little giggle, and soon they were both sitting on the stools at his kitchen island. He watched her dip a tortilla chip into her bowl of chili and take a bite. "This is so good," she gushed. "I don't know how to cook anything. You just put stuff in a crock pot? And it just cooks it into a meal?"
"Yep," he replied, trying not to laugh at the look on her face. Now he was thinking about buying her a crock pot. What the fuck was wrong with him? She took another bite and closed her eyes like it was the most pleasurable thing she'd ever tasted. "Baby, has nobody ever cooked for you before?"
"No," she moaned. "Unless you include my mom, and I only get to eat that for holidays. If I can manage to get back to Massachusetts."
He stroked her cheek with his fingers and said, "You want me to bring you dinner again this week? When you have office hours?"
She moaned again and climbed onto his lap to finish eating. Which turned into her straddling him again while he ran his hands all over her perfect ass again. And once again he could hardly believe he pumped the brakes so hard earlier, because eventually her lips were on his neck and her glasses were pressing into his jaw.Â
"If you come by on Tuesday, I'll wear something cute to work," she informed him, and his head tipped back.Â
"You always look cute."
"Then I'll wear something sexy."
Jake grunted. "Baby, you always look sexy." A few more brushes of her lips, and he found himself asking, "Do you want to spend the night?"
"Oh," she gasped, but she kissed his Adam's apple before pulling her lips away from him.
"We could cuddle. Make out," he clarified, meeting her eyes as she adjusted her glasses. "I could make you breakfast."
She bit her lip and then said, "See, this isn't fair. Now you know that the secret way to get me to do anything is with food. And I don't know what your secret is yet."
"Apparently it's girls with glasses."
Now she was laughing as she planted her hands on his shoulders. "I have a lot of work to do tomorrow at home. I need to start making up midterm exam questions."
"I could help you," he murmured, only half joking. "I solved your problem correctly the day we met, remember?"
"Jake, I will remember for the rest of my life how earnest you were the day we met."
He smiled, and he found his heart swelling with pride. "So you'll stay?"
"Next time," she whispered. "Next time I'll stay. And we can do more than cuddle and make out."
Jake pulled her a little closer with his hands still on her butt. "Yeah. Let's do that."
Eventually he packed up a container with the extra chili and linked his fingers with hers. He walked her to her car and kissed her until they were out of breath, and then he let her leave. But he missed her warmth and her hands on him. He ended up rereading her journal articles and looking up a recipe to make for Tuesday while he imagined just how sexy her outfit might be.

They are exclusive. She ordered the green set. She's dressing sexy on Tuesday. I'm ready. Thanks @mak-32 and @beyondthesefourwalls

A DC X DP #18
You want a taste of my brain? Okay, it's yours anyway.
Imagine disâŚ
This time I get inspiration from an A03 fic, and some of its parts just stuck with me and now Iâm writing about it, if some of you want to read it go for it. If you are asking for the name donât ask, I am not going to sell my soul to the devil to find it in my ever-growing history. If you do manage to find it, kudos to them.
TELL ME I AM GETTING DESPERATE OVER HERE
Credits to them as well. Also, as youâve noticed I decided to post less, now it is due to a good old lack of inspiration. So, donât go getting your hopes up on this one.
âŚ
Ever since Danny Phantom had become the Ghost King he repeatedly entered the reincarnation cycle willingly to retain his morals when he was human. He still retained his ability to stay in the middle of life and death. But when he as the High King of the Infinite Realms gained immortality he found himself losing his ideals and values, he began forgetting. With Clockworkâs insistence, every few hundred years he would become human to experience a lifetime. Sometimes he would go another round in the same dimension, but only when he needed to finish an unfinished business.
Sometimes he is lucky sometimes he is not.
Sometimes he would be born into a loving family with either as the only child or him having siblings. He has experienced the life of royalty as the heir prince. He experienced the life of a knight who was known for his skills with the sword. He was born into a normal family which made him second guesses his every choice due to his lack of normality in his life. He was also born into some wild dimensions that of which could look like it came from a book. From wizards and sci-fi worlds, he never had the time to sit and be an extra.
But there were also times he was born far too unlucky.Â
He was born in a salve ridden society, a parent who were core members of a rebellion so when his current parents died, he was expected to be like his parents. Born in a society where the rich trample the poor and he was forced into early child labor as expected in society to work at a very young age. Born where he and the people around him had never seen peace in a war-consumed country, a war that separated his family from each other not knowing whether one is alive or not, leaving only him and his siblings to stay alive. Being abandoned by a pair of druggies for his parents left alone inside a dumpster and died in the middle of the night, looking through the dimension he saw that some homeless people found his body and reported it to the authorities leaving his parents in jail while some prisoners seem to leave them at the near bottom of the hierarchy in prison.
âŚ
It seems this time he was born in an assassin cult this time he wasnât alone. A twin, an older sibling that was with him in the womb and both came into the world together. The moment he laid his eyes on his grandfather he can already tell that he is a major fruit loop from the way he both look at both of them.Â
His name is too formal for his liking, Dylan Al Ghul, he already convinced Damian to call him Danny when it was just the two of them. Danny tries to downplay his abilities both ghost and human seeing that his grandfather is too power-hungry to the point of misusing ectoplasm that is corrupted but still ectoplasm to achieve some sort of immortality, he tried to give Damian a childhood in the form of showing him the stars whenever he could sneak him outside. He saw the absolute worship and awe Damian would give to their mother and their grandfather whenever they visit or supervised their training, Danny didnât care for their approval nor their presence but seeing his brother seem to at awe and do anything to please the two made his heart shatter, his older brother never needed to prove anyone something.
Danny has repeatedly shown his disdain for the two most powerful people in the organization yet it is a miracle he still lives. It is because he is a spare, a spare yes not the heir but a useful spare one, twins one who specialized in stealth and espionage a twin who is a perfect copy of Damian aside from his eyes mirroring their supposed father. Both Talia and Ra seem to make it their life mission to drill his only purpose in his head, it may have never worked due to his adult mind but he pretended it would be as to not raise any suspicion.
âŚ
The day Deathstroke attacked not only he dared to kill the demon head but also choose to kill the chosen heir, by removing an eye and some of his organs as a form of slow torture but also killing him as he made the organs unable to go back to their ownerâs body.
Danny couldnât look away from his bloodied brother, Talia slowly approached him from behind and put her hands on his shoulder, and whispered some honeyed words on how his role as the spare will be fulfilled at a much earlier date and promptly injected with a sleeping drug.
âŚ
Danny was already awake when he noticed the cold metal bed behind him the lack of clothes as well the number of doctors seemingly in a rush to prepare for a last-minute surgery. He saw the unconscious form of Damian on the other side and suddenly heard the loud ticking noise of a grandfatherâs clock.Â
It seems that it was meant to be, Danny thought as an image of Clockwork flashed in his mind.Â
He fell back asleep knowing that Damian lost an eye, kidney, a lung, some ribs as well an ungodly amount of blood, possibly more. Danny knew that this vessel of his wouldnât survive at the sheer need and he already felt that he would not leave the room alive. So, he took one last peek at the sleeping Damian and promptly closed his eyes, the moment he opened his eyes once again he was back in his chambers in the Infinite Realms clutching his left eye in his face whilst looking at the mirror as he felt his eye be the first one to be removed.
It seems this time he died months before he and his brother celebrated their 10th birthday.
âŚ
Damian woke up with a pounding headache being the assassin he is he immediately looked around seeing that his last memory is being tortured by Deathstroke.
He immediately took notice of his loose clothing and tried to walk towards the door but his knees immediately gave out. As he tries to gain his bearings, he noticed a scar right in the middle of his chest, it couldnât be from the time when he was captured by Deathstroke as he noticed that this scar is too clean, too sterilized as if someone had just come out of a surgery type of scar. As he tries to loosen his shirt to take a better look at his scar when he noticed a mirror facing his way and noticed his eyes, instead of his usual pair of emerald eyes he was greeted with an emerald eye of his own and his brotherâs icy blue eye in his left eye.
Damian remembered that Deathstroke took out his eye, as according to him it reminded him of the Demon head, and decided to promptly pull it out with his bare hands.Â
Dread began to fill his very being and tried to go and look for his brother but deep down he already knew what happened to him after all, he is the heir while his brother his beloved younger brother is just a spare.
âŚ
When Damian had met his fatherâs wards most of them commented on his heterochromia eyes and promptly greeted back with his sword in their faces.
The rest grumbled that Damian couldnât take a tease or two, but immediately chased the demon brat as he chases each and one of them with the intent to kill.
Damian couldnât tell them; another son was hidden from Bruce. Another son he had failed, another son who died before they could even meet him.
From the first few interactions he had with his father when he first met him, he knew where his brotherâs bleeding heart came from.
Sometimes he could still see him, Dyl- no Danny, every time he looks in the mirror. The constant reminder that his brother was seen by the league as nothing but a spare. Whatever love he had for his mother disappeared the moment he laid his sight at his brotherâs eye embedded in his supposed empty eye socket.Â
The constant reminder that shows every time he looks at the mirror and the scar in the middle of his chest, Dannyâs organs that were used on him to ensure his survival while Danny was left behind.
âŚ
He was 14 years old when he went wide-eyed at the stranger across him and his brothers in a heavily populated area.
A teen looks exactly like him with a medical eyepatch on his left eye as he sits in a wheelchair chatting idly with an older man.
Damian heavily thought of a clone, did Talia, not mother never mother, make another clone after him after weeks of silence?
Damian still remembered the first time he encountered a clone with blue eyes, his running theory is that due to his new organs have bonded with him thus creating a batch of clones with blue eyes. Timothy had spoken up that since babies have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the colored eyes of either parent made a new branch of clones.Â
Damian was already planning on disposing of the supposed clone when the said clone suddenly laughed exposing his neck that have a feign white line across indicating a scar. But that scar made Damian double guess, all clones he encountered are scarred free thus leaving him to have no trouble disposing of each and one of them but the existence of the scar he barely caught is something both brothers swore secrecy to it.
The laugh oh god, his laugh, only his brother laughs like that, Damian thought mournfully.
As he tries to look the other way, he suddenly faced the same doctor who was the assistant doctor that foresees his surgery years ago. He may have distanced himself from the League after he had fulfilled his debt but it was no mistaking that it was the same doctor that operated him that time.
A chemist they said, an insufficient man who is more cowardly than any other man yet his talent in poisons made him quite a gem in the League.
A clone who had broke out of their collective mind control? Possible, but why this clone? What made this look alike so special that this man dared to leave the League?
âŚ
Robin began to follow the two, the other bats thought that he had a new case on his lap that requires recon. They didnât question Robinâs new behavior as they have seen him do the same actions when he landed himself a case or when he was following a lead. Yet they couldnât shake the feeling that something is not right, whether it is the fact that Robin refused any assistance or just the fact they have no idea what kind of case Robin is working on.
They should have listened to their guts then maybe they wouldnât be surprised at the bat screen, showing a maternal and paternal match to a picture of a blue-eyed black-haired kid with a medical eyepatch on his left eye looking like Damian in a good day.
âŚ
Danny was doing some paperwork when a flying thought passed by him about his last reincarnation. All memories from his adventures when he got reincarnated are usually put behind the back of his hand yet worries about the well-being of his brother made him distracted, and kept close a special one-way mirror to monitor his baby brother.
Danny felt nostalgic at the family drama and chaos that he canât help but cackle at each interaction Damian has with their fatherâs adopted children and wards. He found himself majorly of his time watching for hours and hours, he canât help but wish he was there. As if he was summoned Clockwork appeared in front of him and told him to go back, which confuses Danny since it was Clockwork who implemented that he cannot go back to the same dimension/ world if his body is too far gone to be revived by him, yet Clockwork told him to give someone named Alfred his regards and vanished. Looking bewildered at his mentor/ grandfather he tried to sense his vessel with little to no hope seeing that the League has his body, but surprises himself when he felt his own body submerged in a portion of the Lazarus pit.Â
âŚ
Going back, he was greeted by an assistant doctor that used to be in the League due to his ancestorâs debt. He explained that he cannot in good conscience do what he was instructed to after the operation, stole his body, and submerged it in an undiscovered pit due to its small size, enough to dump a child not enough for a grown adult.Â
After an initial check-up, both he and the doctor discovered that the mini Lazarus pit regenerated all of his organs except his eye seeing that it was his entire body submerged excluding his head. The assistant doc theorized that those organs of his may be weaker since they were generated from nothing, Danny in all his eldritch glory as well as being the most powerful being across the Infinite Realms played his part perfectly of a now disabled child.
After all who would accuse this disabled child putting the daughter of the Demon Head in an endless nightmare by his command to Fright Knight? Who would accuse that innocent blue eye of his that he had killed any assassin in their tail ever since he and his now temporary guardian began exploring the world? Who would accuse an adorable child that he was the one who had put the Joker in a definite MIA? Who would accuse this child who smiles like the sun despite his setbacks be the one who tortured Deathstroke to the brink of insanity? Danny is pretty sure his temporary guardian knew of his secret endeavors but remained quiet due to his habit when he was in the League or just to prevent any grayer hairs from growing in.Â
âŚ
Now if only his brother stopped moping around the building across their apartment complex and just come inside, he made his infamous fudge to share with his brother. His brother didnât have to drag the rest of the bat brigade in watching him across the building, he even made extra fudge, if only they could just go through the front door instead of rescuing him first in every rogue attack and pretend, they donât him. Well, if they are playing a game then count him in to win. But for some reason all of them made a face of being constipated whenever they talk to him, Danny is so sure he used clean ingredients to make his fudgeâŚ
God dammit just enter the front door like a normal person, better yet tell Batman to stop looking at him as if he died! Those windows are not paying to fix themselves each time one of them decided to stop dropping and roll every other night!
âŚ

Bobby's 2023 Media Wrap-Up
So! Like I said before, this past year I kept a running list of everything I watched, every game I finished, every new album I listened to, etc., and wrote one-paragraph blurbs with my thoughts on every single one. Please enjoy this journey through everything I liked, or didn't like, in 2023, with my favorites of the year listed at the bottom.
(Yes! This is long!!)
Some notes:
I mainly only included things I finished. Exceptions are marked with an asterisk.
I included some YouTube stuff as "TV shows" - mostly particularly long, high effort video essays and documentaries.
I was a bit less adventurous than I'd like to have been this year. Part of this was just that I felt like I was constantly playing catch-up with Big Releases I felt obligated to check out, and part of this was just executive dysfunction from burnout. Wait until you see how long it took me to beat Mario Wonder lmao
Yes, I need to read more books. I don't read a lot of books these days. I need to get back to Discworld.

January
1/15: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (MSQ) - Very slow at times, the Primal shit is generally extremely lame to me outside of the boss fights themselves, but god if the quality of life improvements over WoW, the JRPG energy, and the fact that it Actually Has A Story carry it pretty hard.
1/18: Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island miniseries - One of the most creative and compelling uses of the Sonic IP⌠ever? Fantastic little self-contained arc about the struggles of Eggmanâs abandoned creations that gracefully weaves between heartfelt optimism and moody horror with some of the best art ever seen in a Sonic comic.
1/18: Mega Man X4 - Glad I finally actually beat this after never even beating any of the Mavericks as a kid! I can see why itâs a lot of peoplesâ favorites. The gameplay has very little of that X series bloat and is just fun, especially after getting Xâs armor upgrades. (But the story really is a long series of missed opportunities.)
February
2/2: Donks - Felix Colgrave continues to be an exceptional artist. The sound design on this is fantastic and really sells this short as something unique. Had to go back and watch his older stuff again after this.
2/4: Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward (3.0 - 3.3 MSQ) - I get it now. I get why people say this is just a proper mainline Final Fantasy game built into the framework of an MMO. That shit ruled. Not even walking back the drama in UlâDah from the end of ARR can sour me on it because the main storyline was so strong.
2/8: Disneyland's Forgotten Sci-Fi Rock Band - Live From the Space Stage - A nice and honest tribute to a group of artists who could have easily been forgotten. In hindsight this feels like a precursor to Kevinâs Disney Channel jingle video, a tribute to the unsung artists pouring their hearts into âlesserâ art for a megacorporation, art that was designed to be transient but sticks with people nonetheless.
2/9: Metroid Prime Remastered* - Not gonna finish because I just played through the Wii version in 2021, but still. Very, very pretty remaster.
2/16: Theatrhythm Final Bar Line - Itâs more Theatrhythm. What more could I want
2/17: JoJoâs Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean (anime) - Probably the best part of the anime so far (assuming they continue on to SBR). A near perfect mix of the more structured plot of part 5 with the goofiness of parts 3 and 4 that crescendos into a fantastic, bombastic, emotional, bittersweet ending. The use of footage from the original opening and the new ending set to Roundabout in the finale were perfect, and made me intensely nostalgic for the early days of my JoJo fandom between seasons 1 and 2 of the anime.
2/22: Aggretsuko Season 5 - I donât really know what to make of this one. Once you get past the agonizing initial arc all about Haida where Retsuko has to be his overbearing mommy GF who flips out and starts spying on him when sheâs left on read and chides him when he misbehaves, it feels like an improvement over the previous seasons. But I donât know how much of that is due to the extremely low bar set by season 4. And then the ending is extremely rushed and anticlimactic. They got legally married and the only acknowledgement was a shot of them signing the paperwork in a montage partway through the final episode?????????
2/24: Double Fine PsychOdyssey - God, what a journey the making of this game was. I already loved 2 Playerâs past efforts at documenting Double Fineâs process, but this takes it to a whole new level. This feels culturally significant. The depth and honesty with which they depict not just the nitty gritty of making a game, but also the inherent struggles of working on a collaborative creative work for years at a time, is astounding. Not to mention that they were there to capture the shift from office life to remote work as COVID hit. So much of this would have been nightmarishly stressful to watch if I didnât already know how successful the game was, but thatâs just because they really didnât sugarcoat it. And yet even after all that, it leaves me feeling optimistic about video games as an art form in a way that the constant headlines about cynical live service games donât. There are still people out there pouring their hearts into making real art, and this is their story. Everyone who plays video games should watch this.
2/25: Cracker Island (Gorillaz) - New Gorillaz albums feel like less of an event these days, but after Humanz it feels like theyâre just more chill with the project and their ambitions with it. Every couple years we get some more laid back jams from Damon along with some fun new collabs. Hard to complain. Favorite track: New Gold
2/25: Pool Kids (Pool Kids) - I discovered this band because Derek knows them and was excited when they got a song added to Fortnite through the Bandcamp collab. Always down to find more cool indie rock bands I can vibe with. The mix of dreamy vocals and energetic riffs on some of the tracks here almost fill the Crying-shaped hole in my heart. Almost⌠Favorite track: Conscious Uncoupling
2/25: Insane in the Rain (insaneintherainmusic) - I thought it was really funny timing when Carlos announced that his first original project would be a jazz fusion album inspired by acts like T-Square and Casiopea right as I was getting into those two specific bands. The final product does not disappoint. Favorite track: Insane in the Rain
2/26: Get Up Sequences Part Two (The Go! Team) - Iâve never been one to believe that a bandâs sound has to remain exactly the same forever, but it really does hit you hard that the first two tracks here sound like classic The Go! Team. Their more recent cleaner sound is still here too, though, for a nice mix of old and new. Favorite track: Divebomb
2/28: Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (Season 1) - Oh my god. Oh my god. I got distracted around the time I was finishing SLARPG, but finally catching up now, wow. My assumption that the seemingly lighter tone of the series compared to the prologue was there to lull us into a false sense of security before twisting the knife when war finally breaks out was spot on. This is peak Gundam.
March
3/4: Pizza Tower - One of the best platformers Iâve played in a long time. It transcends its blatant Wario Land inspirations with the sheer speed at which Peppino can move and the way things like the level design, his wall running, and even the hidden ability to do a second lap around the level reward getting into a flow state where youâre just constantly moving. This is the type of game that wants to turn you into a speedrunner. My only real complaint is a few iffy enemy designs that I wish would get patched.
3/6: Bloons TD 6 * - I bought this before bed one night on a nostalgic whim and then the next morning woke up and saw the Steam receipt email on my phone in one of the most âwhat did I do last nightâ moments of my life. I like when the monkeys pop the balloons.
3/7: The Book of Boba Fett - I put off finishing this show for a very long time but finally caved upon the release of The Mandalorian season 3. This show spends four episodes failing to make me give a shit about Boba Fett trying to be âthe daimyoâ and drive the drug trade off of Tatooine, then just gives up and becomes season 2.5 of Mando, which in turn feels like it undercuts the main series. It fails as both its own story and as a spinoff. I know that finishing this after Andor did it no favors, but WHOOF.
3/12: Obi-Wan Kenobi - Some interesting ideas in the first half hinting at a more introspective show, but itâs mostly swept aside in the back half so it can become a generic Star Wars adventure remixing things from A New Hope and Rebels (and apparently Jedi: Fallen Order). Action scenes have zero stakes because you know nothing can happen to any of the returning characters and none of the new ones are particularly interesting. Why thereâs a second climax hinging on a Luke Skywalker death fakeout eludes me. Obi-Wan throwing the rocks at Vader is one of the funniest things in Star Wars history. But it was still better than Book of Boba Fett, I guess.
3/19: The King of Braves GaoGaiGar - Wow, cool robot indeed⌠GaoGaiGar isnât going to blow anyone away with its writing, but sometimes you just need a really fun monster of the week mecha show with great action and lovably goofy characters. This is a show where like 20% of every episode consists of recycled transformation, combination, and signature attack sequences and I ate it up every time because they look fucking cool as hell. I donât care. Iâd watch Final Fusion another 49 times.
3/21: The Last of Us (HBO) * - Watched the first two episodes out of curiosity, but Iâm not sure if Iâll continue because I donât give a shit about The Last of Us. Itâs definitely a well done adaptation, though, even if I know itâs inevitably going to devolve into miserable torture porn with questionable politics if they adapt Part II faithfully. The ending of episode 2 also lines up perfectly with where I stopped in the game in 2013 lmao
3/27: The Future is a Dead Mall - Decentraland and the Metaverse (Folding Ideas) - Another banger from Dan Olson. This time the premise inherently gives him more time to just show off a bunch of stupid ugly bullshit made by crypto guys, which is fun. My main complaint was that I wished he wouldâve brought up Second Life more as a point of comparison (a thing I basically always want out of discussion of âthe metaverseâ), but he at least did touch on it in the last section.
3/31: The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog - I canât believe after years of begging for the supporting cast to get more and better material in a Sonic game I got my wish in the form of a freeware murder mystery VN released for April Fools. This kicked ass.
April
4/7: Berserk - Completed Miuraâs run and caught up on the chapters that have been released posthumously. Itâs hard to say anything that hasnât been said about Berserk, universally agreed upon as one of the greats of manga and fantasy fiction as a whole. What begins in its first few volumes as a nihilistic and edgy action comic built to facilitate as much sex and gore as possible quickly evolves into something deeply human and vulnerable and beautiful, both figuratively and in terms of its lavish art. The world sucks and is immeasurably cruel, and you will see that cruelty illustrated in graphic, sickening detail repeatedly throughout the series. (Perhaps a little too often throughout the Golden Age, where it feels like Miura never misses an opportunity to threaten Casca with sexual assault mid-battle.) But the point isnât to wallow in that misery. Itâs the story of a victim of horrific abuse learning to slowly open up to others, having those people he cares about torn away from him in the worst night of his life, hardening himself into a cold killing machine, and then slowly learning to open back up again, even if it means leaving himself vulnerable to more hurt. Anyone who says that the series peaked with the eclipse and went downhill in the âGutsâ JRPG Partyâ era is missing the point. Guts needed to find new people in his life to care about, to begin to find happiness again. Because no matter what unspeakable things Guts has gone through, itâs still possible for him to heal and to be loved. It takes time, but eventually you stop and realize that life has moved on.
4/8: Dededeâs Drum Dash Deluxe - Skipped it upon release because I didnât particularly care for the minigame in Triple Deluxe, and I didnât miss much. Itâs fine as a little distraction, but not as a standalone rhythm game with only seven songs. If you donât bother with the hard modes or chase after high scores this game is 15 minutes long. Oh how I yearn for Kirby to get the Theatrhythm treatment.
4/10: The King of Braves: GaoGaiGar FINAL - Eh⌠It was okay. Lots of cool robot fights, but said fights are stitched together with a mediocre plot that tries too hard to be more âmatureâ than its unabashedly schlocky kidsâ show predecessor. Not crazy about the ending, either, which tries to be a bittersweet farewell closing off the series once and for all while also teasing that maybe thereâll be ANOTHER sequel after the OVA series they literally called âFINAL.â Ah well.
4/11: The Owl House - Sad to see this one go, but itâs hard to imagine them doing a better finale than this, even if they had gotten the six seasons they deserved. Iâm not as obsessed with The Owl House as I probably wouldâve been had it come out when I was, like, 20, but itâs a really fantastic show for all the reasons people always say. Great characters, great world, great story. I love that this starry-eyed fantasy story about a teenager finding love and a place where she belongs is also set on the rotting corpse of a titan with Hieronymous Bosch-inspired scenery and freaky monsters everywhere. What a great mix. If anything, I just wish I wouldâve watched the first season as it aired so I couldâve had more time with it.
4/29: Mega Man Battle Network 3: Blue Version - FINALLY beat this via the new collection, 20 years after playing it as my first Mega Man game. (Technically my first was White, not Blue, but whatever.) There are more annoyances than I remember - lots of really really bad forced backtracking sections where you have to revisit every previous part of the internet, low chip drop rates, some really aggravating bosses like BubbleMan and KingMan, etc. But itâs still a great time overall. Itâs Battle Network. In the back half the story gets surprisingly emotional, too. I was always under the assumption that the Hub stuff never came back up much in the story after 1, so I was pleasantly surprised with how relevant it was to the emotional arc of 3.
4/30: Mega Man Battle Network 4: Red Sun * - Yeah Iâm not playing through the whole thing lmao. I just wanted to play the first couple hours for nostalgiaâs sake, and as a baseline for how much better the rest are. Even before getting deep in the game and having to deal with all the shit gated between doing two new game+ playthroughs, itâs immediately obvious how much of a downgrade this one is. Tons of glaring errors and typos all over the script, blander music, a way more boring aesthetic for the internet, and a premise that mostly just recycles the tournament idea from 3.

5/14: The Venture Bros. - Glad I finally sat down and watched all of this with Anthony after having seen one (1) episode as a teenager and a bunch of random clips in the years since. Great show. Some jokes in the early seasons havenât aged gracefully, but what the show grows into over time... man. Hank and Dean go from being the butt of the joke to being characters you actually sympathize with - while still also being funny little goofballs. And the journey Henchman 21 goes on throughout the show. Man. Amazing that a comedy like this could run for 20 years and maintain its level of quality. Canât wait for the movie.
5/18: Future Me Hates Me (The Beths) - Okay yeah Iâm now just discovering bands through Fortnite lmao. I canât complain really, they pick some really great indie artists for the in-game radio stations. Anyway: Itâs very easy to win me over with a combination of energetic power pop, catchy guitar riffs, and earnest lyrics like this. One of those albums where three or four tracks in I know I have to buy it. Favorite track: Not Running
5/18: Jump Rope Gazers (The Beths) - Ditto. Favorite track: Dying to Believe
5/18: Expert In A Dying Field (The Beths) - Another good album. (Iâm listening to these in release order.) Iâve been a bit slower to warm up to this one, initially thinking it was a little too mellow overall, but it might be my favorite after a few listens. Some real high highs. Interestingly, the lead singerâs New Zealand accent is also coming out more in her singing? Favorite track: Your Side (or maybe Head in the Clouds)
5/19: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - As a Mario fan, I think I enjoyed it? As a movie, less so? It was decent, in spite of feeling like they came up with a list of fun action setpieces first and then wrote the absolute bare minimum possible for the story scenes tying it all together. Full thoughts here. (This is the first movie Iâve seen this year, huh? I really donât watch a lot of movies.)
5/23: Don't Know What You're In Until You're Out (Gladie) - I feel like I donât like Gladie as much as I should. Their style of noisy indie rock is very much in my wheelhouse, and I do enjoy listening to them, but I dunno. Maybe itâs that the particular style of vocals makes it more monotonous to me. A good album nonetheless, if not 100% my thing. Favorite track: Nothing
5/24: City Slicker (Ginger Root) - Yes I am still making my way through Bandcamp artists I heard on Fortnite donât @ me. Any excuse to get me to listen to some cool city pop-inspired funk like this is a good excuse. Favorite track: Loretta
5/24: Rikki (Ginger Root) - Favorite track: Why Try
5/25: Spotlight People (Ginger Root) - Favorite track: The Classic
5/29: Succession - A good dramedy series that increasingly focuses more on the drama than the comedy as it progresses, but itâs hard to complain about that since the drama is so compellingly produced. I enjoyed it. That being said, I kind of rankle at the claims that itâs The Greatest TV Show Of All Time. Itâs great, donât get me wrong. Amazing performances all around. But the show LOVES to spin its wheels, to repeat itself, and to let most of its interesting dramatic developments fizzle out before anything really comes of them, almost as if the show is constantly getting bored with its own ideas. To some extent this is intentional - Logan Roy is the untouchable billionaire, his kids fail at everything (but will nonetheless remain billionaires), and in the long run none of them really give a shit about anything other than their own status. But itâs not like things tend to visibly impact anyone else, either, be they supporting characters or the world at large. Even the Big Scary Election, where the Roy siblings are directly responsible for plunging the nation into chaos, ultimately has zero impact on the finale a mere two episodes later. Certain Other Things do have an impact in the last season, though, allowing things to meaningfully change for the cast and for the show to sit with the ensuing drama, which has stopped me from souring on Succession more. There was finally a payoff for something. But it does still kind of feel like a show that goes in circles until itâs ready to call it quits, even if those circles did contain a lot of great acting and music along the way.
5/29: Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts - Iâd watched the first 12 episodes when they originally released, but I guess the Netflix binge release and the fact that all three âseasonsâ came out in one year led to me waiting until it finished⌠and then I just never got around to finishing it. Glad I fixed that! Really fun and stylish cartoon with an art style reminiscent of Teen Titans, a hip hop-filled soundtrack, dynamic fight scenes, and a colorful post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant (mostly anthropomorphic) animals. Iâll admit that at times I do kinda roll my eyes at Kipoâs unshakeable belief that everyone can be friends in a way that I donât necessarily with similar shows like Steven Universe, and not every joke lands, but I dunno. Itâs a kidsâ show. Thatâs to be expected. It doesnât detract from the overall package for me.
June
6/1: Craig of the Creek (Season 4) - Itâs been years and Iâm still processing the fact that kids can turn on Cartoon Network and hear Jeff Rosenstock. Anyway! Craig continues to be one of the best cartoons on TV, consistently funny and creative and way more engaging than a show about a bunch of kids LARPing in the woods has any right to be. This season turned into One Piece with the gang effectively hunting down the Poneglyphs in search of a legendary treasure. The kids think itâll be magic. It isn't. An increasing number of cartoon logic gags aside, this show is firmly set in the real world. Does that make it any less interesting? Hell no. Season 3 turned a game of capture the flag into an all-out five episode war between the heroes and villains, filled with dramatic turnabouts and a climactic guest appearance from Del the Funky Homosapien. Iâm sure however they wrap things up in the (sadly shortened) final season, itâll be great. (Also? I would watch a whole show based on that âwhat ifâ episode that jumped forward to everyoneâs 20s.)
6/6: Barry - Holy shit, what a show. I ended up binging it in less than a week in a cycle of âokay, just one more episode.â The way this show is able to swing between tones and genres while still feeling like a cohesive whole is truly masterful. Itâs a layered character drama, a tragic crime thriller, a farcical comedy, an understated action series, a surrealist morality play, and a scathing satire of Hollywood, all in one. Even within the criminal underworld subplots the show ranges in tone from Breaking Bad to Paddington 2. And it works! While the show naturally gets bleaker over time as it confronts the repercussions of Barryâs murders, it never completely loses sight of its comedic roots. My favorite episode was easily season 2âs âronny/lily,â a mostly self-contained episode that somehow manages to keep throwing the perfect curveballs to escalate its dark comedy.
6/12: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition) - Yâall heard of this movie? Pretty good, it turns out. (Iâd seen the theatrical cut before, but this was my first time watching the extended edition. Iâve also only seen parts of the other two movies, so itâs time I finally watch all the extended cuts. The Gollum game pushed me to this.)
6/13: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Extended Edition) - give it to us RAW and WRIGGLING
6/17: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Extended Edition) - Iâm not crying YOUâRE crying
6/22: Clone High (Season 2) - While the first episode being about âcancel cultureâ (or, more accurately, a teenager from 2003 being transported to 2023 and putting his foot in his mouth a lot) put a lot of people off, I ended up enjoying the new season of Clone High. The new clones grew on me as the season went on and their roles in the web of teen romance melodrama crystalized, and it made me laugh a lot, and Cleo/Frida is galaxy brained. Also they played one of my favorite Antarctigo Vespucci songs like a minute into the first episode. I donât think I could really ask for much more.
6/28: The Mandalorian (Season 3) - I'd been watching this weekly but put off the last episode for no real reason. Responses to this season have been all over the place, but my blistering hot take is⌠it was fine. Is it as good as the first season? Probably not. But Mando no longer needs to carry the whole franchise on its shoulders and set the bar for how good the live action Disney Star Wars shows can be, because Andor exists, and itâs never gonna top Andor. The Mandalorian is free to just be a pulpy space adventure show where Giancarlo Esposito plays a scenery-chewing cartoon villain and a little puppet does wire stunts. These are things Andor cannot and should not do, but thatâs Star Wars, baby. Itâs delightful. I could watch Grogu get underhand tossed like a sack of flour all day.
July
7/2: Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Season 2) - LOVE WINS. (More nuanced take from way later: It definitely feels like a lot of the more messy political conflicts in this show got swept aside by the big final battle where some more easily resolved family conflicts take center stage. Iâm not sure the ending is the most satisfying. But also this show only got half the episode count that damn near every other Gundam show ever made got, so that might be a factor here. Idk. Still one of my favorite Gundams.)
7/4: Final Fantasy XVI (watched Anthony play) - I had to write my longest Medium article ever about this one because I was so frustrated
7/10: Home Movies - âThings I like that Iâve never seen in fullâ has certainly been a recurring theme this year. Home Movies remains an all-time classic of animated comedy that went out on a high note before things got stale or the characters became parodies of themselves. While itâs mostly known for its funny improvised banter, throughout the last season you can really see the arc where Brendon no longer enjoys making movies, yet he feels obligated to keep using them to escape from the real world. In that light, the ending where the nature of their dysfunctional makeshift family is cemented, Brendonâs camera suddenly breaks, and life moves on really does feel like the perfect note to end on. Truly one of the best to ever do it.
7/15: The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom - Wow. Just⌠wow. I had serious doubts about TotK in the months leading up to release due to how close Nintendo was playing their cards to their chest. I didnât want this to be a Saints Row IV, where the game is fun enough but the recycled map makes it feel like a rehash. Instead, I found a game that made me look at BotWâs map in a whole new light, brimming with so many more things to do and people to meet. Add on a better, more versatile set of tools, more varied dungeons and bosses, and a story that I felt was told somewhat better and weâve got a real contender for my new favorite Zelda game. It was hard to tear myself away, but as this list shows, itâs been basically the only game Iâve played since it came out.
7/16: Sonic Prime (Season 2) - I liked the parts with Shadow and Chaos Sonic, but Iâve come to the sad conclusion that most of this show is just mediocre. More thoughts here.
7/18: We ⼠Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie - âIâm a dog, but I love Katamari Damacy.â Truer words have never been spoken.
7/19: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - Pretty good! It didnât blow me away, but after how bad the Bay movies got Iâm just thankful to have a decently cohesive Transformers movie where the human story is okay and I like the bots (although half of them needed more screen time), even if it is just another Hollywood blockbuster about two sides fighting over a macguffin that devolves into a big CGI battle against an army of nameless monsters in the third act. This is basically a mid-tier MCU movie but with Transformers, which wonât do much for most people, but again: the bar was underground.
7/22: The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart - God DAMN. A phenomenal ending for the series. While I would have loved to see a full final season to get some more one-off episodes in there, this doesnât feel creatively compromised in any wayâeither due to the time constraints, or due to a desire to make it more marketable as a movie. It really does feel like they just took their outlines for the canceled final season and gently massaged them into the shape of an 84-minute movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. Itâs completely on par with the previous seasons. A hilarious and fitting sendoff for one of the greats of adult animation.
7/23: Beautiful Katamari - This was one of my first Xbox 360 games, but a frustrating temperature-based level made me put it down for 16 years. âMaybe it wonât be as bad now that Iâve beaten the first two games and am better at Katamari,â I thought. Nope! Still an absolutely dogshit level. But also, turns out the whole game is only like two hours long lmao. Itâs still Katamari, so itâs still fun - the final level in particular, which seamlessly takes you from ground level all the way to space, feels like a logical endpoint for the series - but beyond that it just doesn't have the same soul without Keita Takahashi's input.
August
8/4: Doom Singer (Chris Farren) - Iâve been waiting so long for Chris and Jeff to do another Antarctigo Vespucci album, but god damn. This is the best of Chrisâs solo work, and a contender for his best record, period. Every trackâs a banger, with more energy than some of his previous solo work but also a good deal of variety. Favorite tracks: First Place, Cosmic Leash
8/4: Transformers Earthspark (Season 1) - This show had a bit of an uneven start, unsure if it wanted to have the emotional maturity of a more serious action cartoon or a preschool cartoon where the characters have little kid mood swings and outbursts and learn basic lessons. It also felt like it was speedrunning its Wholesome Found Family Dynamic with characters who just met, which didnât feel earned. While these problems never completely go away (see: the cheap and corny way the otherwise very dark season finale suddenly resolves), the show improves quickly, and the positives outweigh the negatives. Itâs so great to have a Transformers cartoon that feels fresh, giving us a post-war setting with a bunch of new characters and new dynamics between the Cybertronians and the humans. The returning characters are also uniformly great as the old veterans overseeing the new generation. (Reformed Megatron! Danny Pudi as Bumblebee! Steve Blum returning as Starscream! Keith David as Grimlock!!!) And those super dynamic action scenes! I can nitpick, but Earthsparkâs a ton of fun, and easily the best new Transformers cartoon since Prime and Animated.
8/5: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (remaster) - Everyone who told me this game was a masterpiece was right. I had played the first chapter when it dropped as the demo for the iOS version years ago, but never went further than that until now. What a game. Absolutely incredible through and through. Great story, great twists, great characters, great puzzles, great art direction. Everything comes together so perfectly to form a totally unique, unforgettable package, a top tier video game murder mystery. Everyone should play this, preferably going in as blind as possible.
8/15: Itâs Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Season 16) - Wow! Recent seasons of Sunny have been kind of up and down, with some interesting experiments (Mac Finds His Pride, the Ireland arc, etc.) paired with some comedic duds. Most of this latest season is standard fare for the series with fewer big creative swings, but itâs just hit after hit in terms of comedy. Not a single dud, whether weâre seeing Mac and Dennis try to start a rental business for inflatable furniture or watching the gang meet Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, believing the entire time that the latter is Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle. Even the attempts at topical comedy landed better. Easily the funniest season in years.
8/16: One Piece Film Gold - Itâs easy to see why this one has kind of been forgotten in the wake of Stampede and Film Red, which revolve around established fan favorite characters, but this was still pretty fun. Perhaps a little too long, but itâs fun to see the Straw Hats fool around in a giant casino and do a heist. They definitely cranked the fanservice up even more than usual in this one, though, as I probably should have expected for a movie made alongside the animeâs adaptation of Dressrosa.
8/17: One Piece: Stampede - This one goes for a different kind of fanservice. While most One Piece movies are isolated from the ongoing plot and its expanded cast of characters, Stampede instead asks âWhat if we just put damn near every active character on the same island and had them fight?â The answer: a fun time! It would get old if all of the movies were like this, but after a bunch of movies that are just like âthe Straw Hats are gonna land on another new island and fight some more weird guysâ itâs fun to see characters like Law and Buggy and Smoker get in on the fun. Itâs also nice to get a movie with the Wano era art style, and Usopp surprisingly gets some really good character moments in here.
8/18: One Piece Film Red - This really is the best of the One Piece movies, huh? (Baron Omatsuri is a close second.) It really feels like a change of pace after the last four with the most interesting and emotionally engaging story out of any of them. And even if the events of these movies are never canon, it still feels significant in my understanding of Shanks as a character as we move into the final phase of the manga.
8/21: Pikmin 4 - The opening hour of the game made me really question if theyâd changed too much, with all the focus on your new dog unit over your Pikmin and the extremely dull, drawn out dialogue scenes with your new companions back at the base. But once I got into the swing of things I had a blast. This is probably my new favorite Pikmin game. Thereâs a great mix of activities here to keep things fresh. I also really ended up liking Oatchiâs role as basically your second captain who can also serve as your tank or a rideable mount. The Dandori stuff and nighttime missions in particular show off how useful Oatchi is for your multitasking without necessarily overshadowing the Pikmin.
8/22: Never Get Tired: The Bomb the Music Industry! Story - I literally backed this on Kickstarter eight years ago (my name is in the credits!) and then never got around to watching it for no reason. Itâs on YouTube now, and Jeffâs got a new album out next week, so now feels like the perfect time to watch it. And man⌠what a great documentary. Obviously Iâm just a fan of the band, but this also really spoke to me as an artist. Jeff wanting to stick to his principles and give out his music for free and play cheap all ages shows, his discomfort over the idea of selling merch, and the struggles that come with not playing the game like that⌠It's hard. They readily admit that Jeff is an idealist, that people fight him on this stuff, that heâs missed out on some big opportunities because of these stances, and that heâs had to compromise a bit on some of these things over time. But that incredible climax with their final show, including a full opening performance of the slowly building âCampaign for a Better Next Weekendâ and the closing performance of âFuture 86â where the whole audience is singing along as the members of the band are hugging and crying⌠itâs beautiful. This may have been a band where the members had to go back to their shitty day jobs after every tour because they werenât selling out arenas, but their art meant something to people, and that makes it all worth it.
8/25: Nimona - I havenât read the original comic (yet), so I canât compare them too much, but itâs nonetheless pretty apparent that some things were softened and easy kidsâ movie jokes were added by the studio to squeeze this graphic novel for teens into a PG animated movie. Regardless, the emotional throughline hits REALLY hard, particularly the very blatant trans allegory and the climax. (Itâs no wonder Disney was afraid of this movie seeing the light of day lmao.) The animation is also very squishy and fun to watch throughout. Great movie.
8/26: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - Spider-Verse really has done so much for animation, huh? This one was as good as everyone said. Beautiful use of stylized color and lighting throughout, and every time this movie very conspicuously shifted to different framerates for a flashy fight scene it owned. Very cute and heartwarming story, too, which thankfully gave its second act plenty of time to explore the cast and let them go on their journey, unlike a certain plumber movie that came out a few months later. Also I would let Death [redacted]
8/28: Holocure: Save the Fans! - This isn't really something I can beat, but I've been addicted to Holocure lately. I don't even watch VTubers aside from maybe seeing a funny Korone animation every now and then, this is just a really, really good freeware Vampire Survivors clone with a huge roster of varied characters to pick from.
8/31: HELLMODE (Jeff Rosenstock) - A new album from Jeff is always a major event for me. If there were any worries that he was starting to go soft at 40 (because one of the three singles off this album was a gentle acoustic piece), the frantic opening of this album put those worries to rest. The first two tracks are Jeff screaming out for help as heâs pulled in a million directions by the chaotic state of the world, a theme that becomes the thesis of the album. Iâd say it lags slightly in the middle, but overall this is another extremely well-rounded record full of bangers thatâs unapologetically Jeff, with possibly my favorite closing track heâs ever done. Favorite tracks: I WANNA BE WRONG, 3 SUMMERS
September
9/3: One Piece (live action, Season 1) - They did it. I canât believe it, but they did it. While I have my nitpicks (Usopp and Sanji donât get enough big moments to shine), this is an extremely solid and faithful adaptation of the first few arcs of One Piece with a great cast. For the most part the changes feel smart and logical, and the big emotional beats of the story are all there and executed very well. I doubted it a little in episodes 2-4, where the Orange Town and Syrup Village arcs saw some major changes to shift the action indoors, and the increased focus on the drama in favor of repeating every gag and battle from the manga 1:1 took a bit of getting used to, but by the end I was having a blast. Itâs a different take on One Piece, but it still feels like One Piece. Genuinely very excited for season 2.
9/4: Pseudoregalia - A great little N64-style 3D Metroidvania focused on platforming and very satisfying movement. I always love entries in the genre that are less prescriptive in what order you have to tackle areas in, a la Symphony of the Night or Hollow Knight, and this oneâs great in that regard. While there are a number of new moves to find, most of the map is open to you very early in the game, and smart use of your moveset can allow you to âsequence breakâ without even realizing it. (You would not believe how long I went without getting the wall run.) I do wish it had a map, but thatâs already being patched in.
9/6: Bomb Rush Cyberfunk * - Not a bad game at all, but I quickly remembered how bad I am at skating games, so like⌠eh? Not sure I have much desire to play past chapter 2. Also the soundtrack is sadly kinda hit or miss for me outside of the obvious Naganuma tunes.
9/9: The History of the Minnesota Vikings (Dorktown) - Jon Bois never misses. Even as someone who doesnât actively follow sports, Jon Bois is a master storyteller, using graphs and statistics and funny anecdotes to explore these deeply human stories. He can convey why people care so much about these teams, these people, and sports in general, and how our popular sports reflect on American culture. He could tell the story of just about any team or player in any sport and I just know Iâll come out the other side a misty-eyed fan. And what a fascinating cast of characters we have this time, with origin stories for everything from the Hail Mary pass to a Minnesota state supreme court judge to the Griddy. Nine hours well spent.
9/10: Timespinner - A fun and highly polished Metroidvania that maybe doesnât quite have enough of its own identity in its quest to replicate Symphony of the NightâŚbut also, like, this was pitched as a Symphony throwback on KickStarter in a pre-Bloodstained, pre-Hollow Knight world, so I canât really blame âem! Stopping time to avoid boss attacks is fun, the pixel art is gorgeous, and I liked the dark science fantasy story about warring empires and meddling with time a lot more than I thought I would - lore journal text dumps and all.
9/14: The Decay of Sam & Cat (Quinton Reviews) - All the stuff at the end with Matt Bennett (the actor who played Robbie on Victorious and Sam & Cat) in this was really good and sweet. Itâs that kind of thing that makes these videos feel like theyâre still worthwhile on some level. But the padding and the things Quinton chooses to spend the colossal runtime on does drive me more and more insane with each passing Nick sitcom video. I donât know how much longer he can keep this schtick up. I hope heâs able to move on to other things before too terribly long instead of continuing to extend this âminiseries.â
9/19: Marvelâs Spider-Man: Miles Morales - AKA Insomniacâs Marvelâs Spider-Man 1.5. Itâs fun for the same reasons Peterâs first game was fun. I had a good time swinging around New York again in preparation for the sequel, and thereâs a lot of cute stuff with Miles becoming Harlemâs neighborhood hero, but WOW did the Underground v. Roxxon conflict fall flat for me.
9/20: I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson - I understand so many posts now.
9/25: Spider-Man (2002) (rewatch) - Itâs you whoâs out, Gobby! OUT OF YOUR MIND!
9/25: Futurama (Season 8) - I was ready to be a hater, recalling the fact that Futurama has already had three âperfect endingsâ with the show getting a little weaker with every revival. Then I watched the first new episode on a whim and thought it wasnât bad, so I was like, eh, sure, Iâll watch the rest. Overall Hulurama is hit or miss. There are chuckles to be had, and it sure as hell beats modern Simpsons, but almost every episode is either a belated take on an overplayed Topical Issue (the pandemic, Amazon, cancel culture, etc.) or a direct sequel to an old episode people liked. Or both! Itâs also really noticeable that certain voice actors sound way older - Billy West is struggling with the Fry voice in particular, and it hurts his comedic timing. But just when all hope seemed lost after the nigh-incomprehensible toy-themed anthology episode, possibly the worst episode of the entire series⌠the last episode, where the Planet Express crew explores whether or not the universe could be a simulation, was really, really solid. Great note to end on to make me not regret my time with this season as a whole.
9/26: Spider-Man 2 (2004) (rewatch) - Once the GOAT, always the GOAT.
9/27: Spider-Man 3 (rewatch) - Revisiting this movie for the first time since I saw it in theaters⌠itâs not bad. Itâs fine! It continues to have the heart and sincerity that make the first two movies work. Itâs just not as concise with three villains vying for the spotlight, but I also wouldnât cut any of them, necessarily. I guess Eddie/Venom would be the easiest, but Peter getting the black suit and giving in to his resentment feels too central to cut. (Yes, even with Emo Peter becoming a meme.)
9/28: Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake - I wasnât really sure what to expect with this one, especially since I was never really a fan of the genderbend episodes in the original show. (At the time they mostly just felt like an excuse to crank up the teen romance stuff to 11.) But MAN. This was a fantastic coda to the original series. It made me care about Fionna and Cake and their friends as their own characters separate from their original counterparts, it gave the Simon/Betty arc a much more satisfying (if no less bittersweet) resolution than the original finale had time to do, and it even managed to be a multiverse story that didnât make me roll my eyes in 2023. A+ all around. Makes me wanna rewatch the original show again. [spoiler: I did]
9/29: Meanwhile (aivi & surasshu) - Itâs been a whole decadeâthey were busy with, you know, all the music in Steven Universe, among other thingsâbut we finally have a new aivi & surasshu album! Their chiptune/piano fusion style is familiar, but theyâve definitely grown as composers in subtle ways. Favorite track: Time Travel

10/1: This is Financial Advice (Folding Ideas) - A lot of the nitty gritty finance law stuff turned into white noise for me, but still, great video. I had no idea that the GameStop stock craze devolved into this bizarre cult that thinks theyâre going to crash the global economy and rise from the ashes as the new kings with the value of their GME stocks. Glad this video exists to try and balance out the narrative.
10/5: Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon DLC - Good ideas, absurdly frustrating and tedious execution. Full thoughts here.
10/10: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (rewatch) - I didnât plan this, but very fitting that I would end up rewatching this on 10/10.
10/12: Half-Life Alyx but the Gnome is Self-Aware (wayneradiotv) - ha he! (Seriously though, that finale was a fucking masterpiece. The RTVS crew has an incredible knack for using the framing device of video game livestreams to blur the lines between comedy and horror, or ironic anti-humor and complete sincerity. Iâve never seen anything else like this.)
10/15: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Not sure how much I can say that hasnât already been said. The most visually creative movie Iâve ever seen, grounded by some really excellent storytelling about Miles (and now Gwen) thatâs probably better than his actual comics. But it also does feel like itâs about to end and then the movie just keeps going like ten times over lmao. Canât wait to watch this a second time on a better TV.
10/20: Sonic Superstars - A mostly really solid and fun 2D Sonic game thatâs unfortunately dragged down by an extremely hodgepodge soundtrack and some overly drawn out boss fights. I spent HOURS trying to beat the final boss of the bonus scenario (which is required for the true ending in this one) before giving up. Really a shame that thatâs the note Iâm leaving the game on, because I otherwise enjoyed it, but ah well. More thoughts here.
10/27: Marvelâs Spider-Man 2 - Another good Spider-Man game from Insomniac. Liked the story more than the one in Miles Morales, but maybe not as much as the first game. Extensive thoughts here.
10/28: Venom - Was in the mood for more Venom after the game. As expected this was not a very good movie, but the dynamic between Eddie and Venom made it a fun watch. Tom Hardy is constantly about to shit his pants in this movie. Itâs great.
10/28: Venom: Let There Be Carnage - I had a way better time with this one. Is this a good movie? No. But it cranks the insanity of the first movie up to 11. Goofy as fuck in an extremely watchable way.

11/5: Pluto - An absolutely masterful series that anyone interested in sci-fi needs to watch. The anime adaptation was great, and I immediately understand why people whoâve read the manga speak so highly of it. Really makes me want to get into Astro Boy more, and also read some of Urasawaâs other works.
11/18: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - Wow, just wow. When news of a Scott Pilgrim anime broke I was cautiously curious to see if weâd get a more direct adaptation of the comics, and instead it veered off in the exact opposite direction in the best way possible. This is almost entirely a different story, one thatâs in conversation with the previous versions (sometimes in very meta ways), and I think itâs really valuable to see OâMalley revisiting these characters with new things to say about them. The major story divergence gives us a chance to examine the characters from a new angle - particularly Ramona, whoâs the real protagonist of this version, and the evil exes, who completely steal the show. This was a great reminder of why I fell in love with this series as a teenager. I now genuinely hope we get more Scott Pilgrim.
11/22: Void Rivals (Issues #1 - #6) - The first arc of the new Robert Kirkman series that kicked off Skyboundâs new âEnergon Universeâ is now complete, and Iâm left thinking Void Rivals is⌠okay? I thought the first issue was a decent (if not particularly original) sci-fi comic with an appealing art style, which just so happens to also briefly have a Transformer in it so there can be a Big Surprise. And the series still hasnât quite shaken that feeling to me. Itâs an okay sci-fi series that arbitrarily dedicates a couple of pages of every issue to something from Transformers, but Iâm not really sure what the shared universe stuff adds to Void Rivals, or what Void Rivals adds to Transformers and GI Joe. I guess weâll have to wait and see.
11/22: Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History (Defunctland) - Yeah, gotta be honest, I only got halfway through this one. It seems like Kevin just 1) really wanted to push himself creatively and 2) make a love letter to Epcot, and while I respect that, I think it suffers as a historical documentary. Itâs Fantasia but for the creation of Epcot. That might be very impressive on a technical level, but it feels more like a piece of Disney propaganda than prior Defunctland videos due to a lack of context and nuance.Â
11/24: Aperture Desk Job - A short, sweet, and funny little tech demo for my new Steam Deck set in the Portal universe. More effort was definitely put into this than was strictly necessary.
11/26: ESCHATOS - I am not good at bullet hell games, but I enjoy them from time to time and I really love this oneâs FM synth soundtrack, so I picked it up on a whim in the Steam sale. I only beat it on Easy, but still, I had a lot of fun with it! Itâs straightforward but very flashy, with the camera dynamically zooming around from set piece to set piece at ridiculous speeds and each level segueing directly into the next. The lack of a powerup system on the main mode in favor of just needing to know when to use your different shot types makes it feel very approachable.
11/27: Lunistice - A great little 3D platformer with a good soundtrack that I had fun hunting down all the secrets in. This is an easy recommendation for fans of games like Kirby or Klonoa - whimsical games set in colorful dream worlds where the underlying story can get a bit more somber. (Although the story in this one is mostly told through mildly cryptic lore dumps, so your mileage there may vary.)
11/28: Spark the Electric Jester 2 - The leap from 2D to 3D here is impressive, but this is very clearly a rough draft for Spark 3. Very, very fun Sonic-style 3D platforming, but the combat is lacking and the storytelling is just kinda bad. More extensive thoughts on this and the above two games here.
December
12/2: Fortnite (Chapter 4) - This was my first full chapter of Fortnite, after having been roped into the game by the siren songs of Zero Build mode and Goku during Chapter 3. This means itâs harder for me to compare this chapter to previous ones, but still, Fortnite remains a genuinely very well made Battle Royale shooter thatâs a blast with friends. If I have any complaint about this Chapter, itâs that they would regularly introduce zany ideas and then slowly reel them back in, whether it was the Augment system or the increasingly mundane movement items. It also felt like it was a little too easy to get the perfect loadout in every match, meaning the final showdown would almost always be against players with Slurp Juice and gold shotguns. And I missed the smaller mid-season map updates of Chapter 3. But overall I still had a really good time, and look forward to playing more for the foreseeable future.
12/4: Plagiarism and You(Tube) (HBomberguy) - This will get written off by many as âYouTuber drama,â but this really is an excellent video essay that feels like the kick in the pants that YouTube needs. If video essayists are gonna be a major source of information for so many, then they gotta have standards. I also think it does a good job of highlighting the people that have been plagiarized and trying to drive more attention their way in an attempt to right those wrongs.
12/6: Transformers (Skybound comic) - We only got the first three issues of this in 2023, but I just HAVE to say something about how incredible this series is here. Daniel Warren Johnson is knocking it out of the park. This is the new bar for Transformers. The hand-inked art is extremely dynamic and full of character, and the story is using the familiar beats of G1 Transformers but doing very new things with them. You can tell this from the very first page, but the emotional scene of Optimus accidentally crushing a deer in the forest and realizing how fragile life is on Earth sealed the deal for me. And yet in the very same comics Optimus can do suplexes and clotheslines and lord knows how many other wrestling moves on Decepticons, and it doesnât feel like tonal whiplash? These comics just fucking rule, and anyone with even the slightest interest in Transformers should be reading them.
12/8: What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5) - [spoilers] WWDITS has very much settled into being a status quo show. Every season has its own little arc where one or two things change to keep things interesting, but then everything returns to normal by the end. Guillermo finally becoming a vampire, only to become a human again in the end, might just be the most egregious example of this yet. But also⌠the showâs still really funny? And I continue to be happy that Kristen Schaal has stuck around as a series regular as the Guide. So itâs hard to complain. I could see the show running out of steam over the next few seasons, but itâs still hitting for me right now.
12/12: Pony Island - Finally got around to this since the trailer for the sequel dropped. I feel like playing this years later in a post-Inscryption world where Pony Island is a known quantity kind of lessens its impact, but still, itâs a fun and funny puzzle game where you try to hack your way out of a possessed arcade machine. Iâm not sure I found it particularly scary, but Iâm not sure itâs supposed to be? The way the game messes with you during the Asmodeus âboss fightâ was probably the highlight for me. I also like being able to say things like âThe part where you have to not kill Jesus was so hard. I kept getting terrible butterfly patterns.â
12/16: Breaking Bad VR but the AI is Self-Aware (wayneradiotv) - As always, Wayne and co.âs commitment to the bit is unrivaled. This kind of got interpreted as just a way to troll HLVRAI fans, but so many moments in this genuinely made me laugh out loud.
12/18: Soul of Sovereignty Prelude - As someone who would list Cucumber Quest as a big creative influence, I was naturally very excited for this first chapter of GGDGâs new visual novel. Their mentality of both scaling things back in terms of labor while also going more shamelessly self-indulgent in terms of storytelling after burning out on making webcomics has really spoken to me, and WOW, the end result of that new process of theirs is shaping up to be something really special. The art and music are sparse but extremely evocative, giving you the rough sketch of the world and letting your mind fill in the rest. The story blends literary high fantasy vibes with the style of fantasy seen in â90s JRPGs (you can definitely tell this came from an idea for an RPG), but rather than constantly winking at the audience and making self-aware video game references it plays these storytelling ideas extremely sincerely, giving them real dramatic weight while still indulging in fun tropes to their fullest extent. While itâs a far cry from their most famous work with much more mature content, GGDG always excels at creating characters and worlds that immediately grab me. I canât wait for the rest.
12/18: Barbie - Iâm only⌠what, five months late for the whole Barbenheimer thing? Perfect timing. Anyway! On the one hand, I get the critiques saying that this movie is just a major corporation funding a self-aware feminist critique of their own product as a marketing ploy. And I kinda agree with that. And the movie is a little too long, and I donât really know what to think of the way the Barbie/Ken conflict plays out. Anthony asked me to summarize what the story ended up being about, and I had no idea what to even say. But also⌠I did still like the movie? We donât get a lot of cartoonish, absurdist, fourth wall breaking comedies like this anymore, and this is a good one of those. Also the whole cast is great, the set design is kind of stunning, and the cinematography is consistently appealing. I wouldnât say itâs a revolutionary work of feminist filmmaking by any stretch, but itâs a good comedy movie.
12/21: Dr. Stone: New World - Man, Dr. Stone is great. Iâve said this many times, but I just love that this series uses all the trappings of shounen that would normally be used to hype up the protagonist learning a new move to instead hype up things like the protagonist building a loom or a hot air balloon. Itâs shounen Bill Nye. I didnât completely love everything about the Treasure Island arc this season, but it all built towards a really fun climax with a lot of satisfying turnabouts where the heroes use their ingenuity to just barely win.
12/23: The History of Mike Tysonâs Punch-Out World Records (Summoning Salt) - Truly one of my favorite Summoning Salt videos ever, even with how repetitive Punch-Out can get to watch. Itâs just so hard to beat âand that runner⌠was me.â
12/24: Super Mario Bros. Wonder - What more can be said that hasnât already been said? Itâs the best and most creative 2D Mario game since the â90s. The only real flaws are that itâs a little easy, the Search Party stages are annoying in singleplayer, and I wish that every boss prior to the final boss wasnât just some form of Bowser Jr. fight. But those arenât nearly enough to drag the whole experience down. It was a blast.
12/24: Do a Powerbomb! - Got this from Anthony as a birthday present. This is the previous series by the creative team currently doing the new Transformers comics I was gushing about a few entries ago. Even with the high bar set by those comics, Do a Powerbomb! exceeded my expectations. Holy shit. An absolutely entrancing fantasy wrestling miniseries full of dynamic, energetic action and tons of heart. These comics where a guy wrestles a giant talking orangutan almost made me cry. Twice. An instant favorite.
12/25: Adventure Time (rewatch) - We ended up finishing our rewatch of Adventure Time (the main series, anyway) on my 30th birthday, which feels appropriate. I already kinda knew this, but this rewatch has truly confirmed that Adventure Time is my favorite TV series of all time. The entire show is even better on a full series rewatch. In hindsight, even parts that annoyed me when they aired end up being important parts of the beautiful tapestry that is this series. The many low points of Finnâs adolescent love life are important stepping stones in his growth as a person, which leaves him in an extremely satisfying place by the end. Jake having kids didnât get to be a huge status quo change because they grew up instantly, but then they did a bunch of fun episodes about Jakeâs relationships with his adult children that deepened him as a character. And most of the big lore questions they kept teasing over the years (âWhereâd the humans go?â âWho are Finnâs parents?â âWhenâs Finn gonna get a robot arm?â etc.) ended up getting satisfying and creative answers, because the show left itself the room to figure those things out later. This is a truly special, one-of-a-kind series, one that lasted nearly 300 episodes and yet still seems like it was over too soon. And yes, I did in fact cry during the final montage, like I knew I would. I will always cherish this show with all of my heart.
12/25: Olive the Other Reindeer (rewatch) - Havenât seen this one since I was a kid! It was a favorite of mine back then, and while it might not be quite as funny as I remember itâs still very cute, with a 2D/3D hybrid art style that remains very unique and appealing. As an adult I can also appreciate the cast they got for this, with like half the cast of Futurama bolstered by guests like Michael Stipe from REM and The Sopranosâ Joe Pantoliano.
12/26: Guillermo Del Toroâs Pinocchio - Anthony and I capped off our Christmas with the most jolly and festive stop motion movie of all! Jokes aside, man, what a beautiful movie. The animation is immaculate, and we really just donât get childrenâs animated films like this anymore. Ones that overtly feature real world politics and religion and so many other dark themes in a way that doesnât talk down to kids or sugarcoat things. This one hits hard. We need more movies like this.
12/31: Oppenheimer - This was an interesting one. Despite being three hours, the way that first hour jumps around in time makes it feel like Oppenheimer is constantly being propelled forward through life at a breakneck pace, swept up by the rising tide of nationalism in spite of his personal left wing politics, never really reflecting on what heâs doing until itâs too late. Then when heâs no longer useful to the empire, heâs chewed up and spat out, only to eventually be honored as a national hero as a symbolic gesture. Itâs a compelling story. However, Iâm a little torn on how certain aspects of history were framed. Does the abstraction of the bombings detract from the true weight of those events, in favor of sympathizing with the man who built the bomb? Or is it clever a way to show how the realities of the war were compartmentalized away by people who were complicit in its most heinous acts of violence? One minute a bunch of physicists are talking theory, thousands of miles away from the theaters of war, and the next theyâve killed 200,000 people. So which is it? Eh, probably somewhere in the middle, I guess. But I liked it overall.
12/31: Kirbyâs Return to Dream Land Deluxe - Iâve been really surprised by how good this rerelease is. It kind of flew under the radar for me. I liked the original game, but at the time it also almost felt like the New Super Mario Bros. of Kirby. It was a straightforward throwback game where you went through a grass world, then a desert world, then a water world, etc., and also they added four player co-op. But returning to this one after the kinda mid Star Allies has made me appreciate just how solid RtDL is as a Kirby game. I really like the updated graphics, too - yes, even the new cel shaded outlines around the characters - even though I didnât think it looked that great in screenshots. Also the two new copy abilities (Sand and Mecha) are fun, the minigame collection is shockingly fleshed out to the point that they couldâve sold it as a standalone eShop game, the collectible character masks are fun, and the new epilogue mode where you play as Magolor is one of the coolest bonus modes theyâve ever done. This is a top tier Kirby remake any fan of the series should check out.
Ongoing things I followed in 2023 that don't have a blurb:

Somethinâ Stupid
Cedric Diggory x Reader
âWhat the hell happened to her?â Ron asked referring to his friend pacing back and forth and looking sheepish.
âCedric Diggory happenedâ Harry states blankly and Ron just rolls his eyes already used to his friend freaking out daily because of Diggory.
âWhy did I even bother talking to him in the first place?!â I say trying to prevent myself from crying out of embarassment, âMerlin Iâm never gonna show myself again!â
âYouâre being dramatic, it wasnât that bad!â Hermione says trying to calm me down.
âAre you sure?â I ask, âSheâs lying it actually was bad.â Ginny chimes in.
âGinny! Seriously?!â Hermione yelled, âWell I donât want to lie to her.â She shrugs.
âWhat exactly happened?â Ron asks.
Earlier that Afternoon
Cedric walks up to the table where the group of Gryffindors are sitting, he stops and takes a seat next to Y/n.
âHey guys!â Cedric greets them, completely oblivious to the fact that his presence alone was able to make Y/n redder than the Weasleysâ hair
âHello Diggory what brings you here?â George asks, âOh well my cousin baked some cookies and she asked for my help with selling them, do you guys want to buy some? Itâs only 7 sickles each.â He states.
âIâll take oneâ Fred says, âIâll take twoâ Ginny adds. Most of them wanted to buy cookies and so did some other Gryffindors near them that overheard, so Cedric insisted that they made a list to make things easier and to just give him the list when theyâre finished.
âAlright! Weâre done, Y/n you give Diggory the list.â Ginny says, âWhat?! Why me?!â I ask.
âCome on this is your chance to atleast have an interaction with him!â She suggests, âYeah you could start a conversationâ Hermione says, âAnd maybe even flirt a little!â Ginny adds, sending me a wink.
âFineâ I say as I stand up and walk to the Hufflepuff table, I poke Cedric on the back to catch his attention. He turns around slightly to take a look at who was poking him, âOh, Y/n! Itâs you!â
âHey, so we um- I wanted to let you know that theyâre done with the list.â I state trying to act cool and unbothered, obviously I failed.
âOh great, Can I take a look?â He asks and I panic realizing that I forgot the list, Merlin why am I like this?
âShoot, I forgot to take it from Ginny! Iâll just go and get it.â Before I can walk away he stops me, âNo itâs alright Iâll just go there.â He says.
âOkay..â I say, following him to the Gryffindor Table.
âHey you do know you forgot the list!â Ginny states, âI know!â
I stand there awkwardly next to Cedric who was checking out the list when I hear Ginny coughing to get my attention. She then mouths, âTalk to himâ. Well I think thatâs what she was trying to say Iâm not very good at lip reading.
âSo, Cedric did you help bake those cookies?â I ask in a horrid attempt to initiate conversation.
âOh yeah, I helped my cousin out a bit.â He says, taking one glance at me before looking back to the list.
âSo did you make the cookies in one of those wood-burning ovens?â I ask trying to keep the conversation going.
âOh I wasnât really there when she actually did bake it but Iâm pretty sure it was Gas.â he states.
âGas? Wow!â I remark, fidgeting with the rings on my fingers. âHey uh, yâknow that smell gas has?â I pause for a second âThey put that in- the gas is odorless but they add the smell so you know when thereâs a leak, I read it from a book.â I rambled, âA lot of other gas smells..â I continued, âMeth- methane smellsâ I added.
Cedric smiles at me awkwardly, looking a bit confused. âGood to know.â He pauses not really knowing how to reply to my rant about gas, âWell I have to go, Iâll give you guys your orders tomorrow!â He says to the group before walking back to the Hufflepuff table.
âMerlinâs beard was I fucking talking to him about Gas?!â I exclaim.
The next day
I sat quietly in the library rewriting my horrible notes from Potions class when I feel someone tap on my back, I immediately panic when I turn around and find Cedric smiling at me.
âHey Y/n!â he says before taking a seat next to me. âHello Cedricâ I reply awkwardly, trying to avoid his gaze.
âSo what are you doing?â He asks, trying to take a peak at what Iâm writing. âJust writing some notes for potions.â I answer.
âCool.â he says, while fiddling with his tie.
I try to break the silence by speaking up, âListen, Iâm sorry about yesterday with the whole Gas thing..â I state. âOh itâs alright, it wasnât really a big dealâ he shrugs.
âYeah, Iâm not usually awkward around people. I just get awkward around you cause I am a little intimidated by you, which is not your fault, this is totally a me problemâ I continue to ramble âThatâs just- I guess how I act when I have a crush on someone-â
he stops me âWait what?â, he pauses âYou have a crush on me?â He smiles.
âMy god I have got to start talking less!â I say covering my face with my hands out of embarassment, Cedric only chuckles.
âYouâre really cute yâknow?â he teases, I only look up at him still embarassed cause of my accidental confession.
âHow bout I take you out to The Three Broomsticks this weekend?â he suggests as he takes a strand of my hair and tucks it behind my ears. âIâd like that.â I say giving him a sheepish smile.
He smiles at me, âSo besides gas, what else do they add smell to?â
A.n: Hey guys, so as you can see my writing skills are still way below average but Iâm working on it lol. I made this fic cuz Iâm extremely bored and Iâve been in a robert pattinson phase these past few weeks so I figured, why not write about Cedric?
Btw credits to f.r.i.e.n.d.s- season 5: episode 19, which is where I got the whole gas thing idea from, that episode was really funny lol
Honestly I think this is shitty especially the bit with the whole list thing but idk what else to put there so I just did that
Well thatâs it, I hope yâall like it!!
A.N number 2: I WROTE THIS MONTHS AGO, BUT I LEFT THIS IN MY DRAFTS CUZ AT THE TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS HORRIBLE AND CRINGE, I STILL THINK IT IS CRINGE NOW BUT WHY NOT POST IT IDK JUST PLS DONâT JUDGE LOL LUV YALL

One of my last reblogs got me thinking about this so here is
How all four Zaynes + Sylus would treat you for low iron
Warnings: mentions of hunting, blood, suspicious food and drink. Everything aside from Doctor Zayne's section is not rooted in reality so don't take this as medical advice. If you feel tired all the time, go ask your doctor about it and get a blood test. Trust me, you're not supposed to be tired all the time.
Doctor Zayne
By the book treatments. You'll get iron pills and recommendations for iron-rich foods. If your stomach can't handle the pills, he might recommend iron infusions, all supervised by medical personnel. On his free nights, he'd take you out to dinner or cook for you to make sure you eat iron-rich foods, even if it's only in his presence
Dawnbreaker
He'd repeatedly remind you to rely on him. Just stay in bed, he'll take care of the rest
In his world, everything you need to live is packaged in nutrient drinks or in pills, so he'd gather all these less than tasty nutrient drinks and pills but he'd also go to the outskirts of town, where the wild animals have taken over a part of a forest. They don't entirely live in harmony with the wanderers there. Some say they're no longer animals, but meat is meat, and only fresh meat will do for his beloved, especially when she's sick
He'd come home with freshly butchered meat, and the blood from the meat in large bottles, hoping she'd be able to get some benefit from drinking such a valuable and rare fluid
Foreseer
He wouldn't treat you. You don't belong in the tower. You'll only get sicker here.
"Go back to your people. Only they can help you. I have no means or the experience to cure you here."
But you won't leave. Stubborn, even in the face of an illness that makes you weaker and weaker by the day. But you've experienced this before. It's nothing new
Soon, you and Jas annoy him enough to convince him wild game is actually high in iron and, with his powers, he'd easily be able to hunt one near the tower
It would be his first meal with someone. A warm, hearty meal with the girl he's seen his other selves eat with so many times before
Master of Fate
"Close your eyes and hold my hands. Imagine my energy flowing out of my body, crossing over our hands like a bridge, and being absorbed into your body. Take as much as you need."
The Master of Fate is also a master of ancient energy magic, so something like mana or energy transfer would be easy for him if you're ill or need a boost
This won't fix the cause of your low energy of course, but this would be a start to get you on your feet
Once you have enough energy to travel down the mountain, he'd bring you to a healer, someone who works with and sells all sorts of dried herbs and Chinese medicines
Protest all you want but these bitter, smelly concoctions are going into your mouth one way or another. He'd laugh at your reaction and call you a child for making a fuss about taking your medicine, and he'd promise you a sugary treat if you take it like a good girl
Sylus
"Are you ignoring Zayne's advice again? You're really putting him through his paces, huh? I'd have my own personal doctor take a look at you but I have a feeling you'd listen to him even less. Well, if it's iron you need, then tonight we'll have steak. And we'll have steak for as many nights as you like after that. I'll have the chef work on a meal plan with you."
With your steak dinners, he'd offer you a particular red wine. It tastes a little sharper, a little richer... The way he watches so carefully when you take a drink, and the way he smiles at you when you swallow... You'd be suspicious about it, if it weren't for the fact that you did in fact feel much better after each meal
#Gotta be the most self indulgent posts Ive made so far#And I've made a ton lmao#love and deepspace#zayne love and deepspace#sylus love and deepspace#Scenarios#fluff

ok so i just finished my book cover for First, Best Destiny - Part 1 by the amazing @ophelia-j !!
admittedly i was going to wait until i actually attached the text block to the cover before i posted this haha, but i was SO excited after making this cover that i decided to just post it and then update with the finished product later!!
this book is absolutely embedded in my soul, and words cannot even describe how gorgeously itâs written. itâs a book that made me realize - hey, the adventure doesnât end as you grow old.
you can read it here. i promise you wonât regret it!!!
anyways!!! hereâs all of my other bookbinding steps for anyone interested.
camâs somewhat incomplete bookbinding guide
please note that i am an AMATEUR hobbyist. please do not actually use this as a tutorial.
oh also!! bookbinding terminology will have a * by it which will be explained at the end in order to make this flow better. iâll also link the tutorials i used at the end of this for anyone interested.
1) Formatting the document! I downloaded the original text as a PDF, and then designed a cover page, grabbed some art from the internet (i know, frowned upon, but this is just a personal copy so it is what it is), and then designed a table of contents and chapter icons!!
*side note! i added which episodes each chapter follows to the table of contents (pictured below) as this book was written as an accompaniment to TOS and the movies.
2) Next, I printed out all NINE HUNDRED PAGES??? admittedly i could have done it in less if Iâd used a bigger page size, but sending things out to be printed is expensive so we made do. after printing, i folded them into signatures*.
*thereâs an additional note about the paper i used at the end
3) punching out holes in all the signatures! although not technically necessary, I honestly donât think i wouldâve been able to sew this behemoth without doing it.
4) sewing the pages into a real!! actual!! book!! this was the part i was most nervous about. iâve NEVER attempted to sew anywhere near this large of a book before, so i tried out a new method of sewing in hopes of making it a bit more sturdy. we wonât know if it worked until this book endures some wear and tear, but iâm pretty optimistic!
5) next up is glueing the spine! this is where it really hit me that a lot of bookbinding is justâŚglueing shit together. later i also added cardstock to the spine in hopes of helping it adhere to the cover better, and a book headband* for decoration.
5) now weâre onto the book cover!! they only sell bookboard in minor bulk around here, so weâre not even gonna discuss how much bookboard i now own⌠anyways! i glued the faux leather onto the bookboard and then let that dry.
6) last up! off to the cricket! a huge thank you to my friend for letting me borrow her cricket AND supplies! anywho, this is where i designed my cover art. i then adhered the design to the cover. after this step, i realized iâŚdefinitely need some kind of sealant - so, if any more seasoned bookbinders have suggestions for this i am all ears!!
all in all, this was a super fun project, and a great way to kill some time while i recover from surgery! i absolutely plan to bind the sequel at some point, but that may be aâŚways away. iâm a STEM major and school starts back up soon soâŚtime will be in short supply lol!

can i request any words/ phrases/ themes linking to the word ârelicâ?
Writing Notes: Relic
Relic - an object esteemed and venerated because of association with a saint or martyr; souvenir, memento
Relics - remains, corpse; a survivor or remnant left after decay, disintegration, or disappearance; a trace of some past or outmoded practice, custom, or belief
Reliquaries - the containers that store and display relics
Where the bones of martyrs are buried, devils flee as from fire and unbearable torture. âSt John Chrysostom
Etymology
Middle English relik, from Anglo-French relike, from Medieval Latin reliquia, from Late Latin reliquiae, plural, "remains of a martyr", from Latin, "remains", from relinquere "to leave behind"
Related Words
Afterimage - a lasting memory or mental image of something
Artifact - an object remaining from a particular period
Corpus - the body of a human or animal especially when dead
Decedent - a person who is no longer living; a deceased person
Memento - souvenir
Oddment - something left over; remnant
Oeuvre - a substantial body of work constituting the lifework of a writer, an artist, or a composer
Remnant - a usually small part, member, or trace remaining
Souvenir - something kept as a reminder (as of a place one has visited)
Vestige - a trace, mark, or visible sign left by something (such as an ancient city or a condition or practice) vanished or lost
Martin Luther complained about the profusion of relics and the absurd claims being made for them: "What lies there are about relics! One claims to have a feather from the wing of the angel Gabriel, and the bishop of Mainz has a flame from Mosesâ burning bush. And how does it happen that eighteen apostles are buried in Germany when Christ had only twelve?"
Examples
ANCIENT GREEK RELICS. At Athens the supposed remains of Oedipus and Theseus enjoyed an honor that is very difficult to distinguish from a religious cult.
BUDDHIST RELICS. Relics of the Buddha and various saints were (and still are) venerated. Following the Buddha's death, his bones and teeth were divided for the purpose of being used as relics in order to illustrate his teaching of impermanence (anitya). These relics were so valued that they caused armed conflict between factions for possession of them. Afterward, these relics were taken throughout Asia with the gradual spread of Buddhism.
CHRISTIAN RELICS. Since the dawn of Christianity, relics have been an important part of Christian devotionalism. During the Middle Ages, the selling of relics became a lucrative business. The concept of physical proximity to the âholyâ was considered extremely important. A pilgrim's possession and veneration of a relic was seen as a means to become closer to God. Instead of having to travel hundreds of miles to become near to a venerated saint, a Christian could enjoy closeness with him/her through their relic at home.
MUSLIM RELICS. Although certain sects of Islam strongly discourage (or outwardly prohibit) the veneration of relics, a very large collection of Muslim relics is preserved in the Sacred Trusts, located in Istanbul, which contains more than 600 treasured pieces in the Topkapi Palace Museum.
The Roman Catholic Church makes a distinction between veneration and worship of relics and icons.
3 Categories of Relics According to the Vatican
First-Class Relics: Items directly associated with the events of Christ's life (manger, cross, etc.), or the physical remains of a saint (a bone, a hair, a limb, etc.).
Second-Class Relics: An item that the saint wore (e.g., sock, shirt, glove). Also included are items that the saint owned or frequently used (e.g., a crucifix, book). An item more important in the saint's life is considered a more important relic.
Third-Class Relics: Anything that has touched a first- or second-class relic of a saint.

âWhat you need baby? You want my lips? Wanâ me to teach you how a woman should be loved?â Henry cooed tracing his thumb under her bottom pouting lip, his hands were holding in place the same toy she had made for him, her voices coming out strained as she ground her hips against the soft plush; Henryâs other hand cupping her face affectionately as he denied her of his kisses
Y/n bit her lip in anticipation as she watched a rough group of men entered the Saturday market, the stuffed crochet toys she had made all laid out on the table; her eyes widening as she watched all the other stall owners leave in such a hurry. Eventually leaving her as the only stall in the whole street. Her smile never faltered as the head of the group approached her, his facial hair grown out, his hair black and short. His blue eyes staring into hers as his heavy books clinked while he walked over, his skin slightly tanned and glowy with sweat.
âHey sir welcome! Iâm (insert business name) and I make crochet cuties based on your auraâ Reciting her business selling phrase, she played with the ears of one of the woollen rabbits on the table as he simply just looked at her. His other companions dawdling by their bikes near the entrance, cheeky grins on all their faces as they watched their supposed leader interact with such a pure innocent soul.
âReally? What one would I be then dollface?â He inquired looking over the array of absolutely adorable stuffies on her wooden table. Y/nâs stomach grew warm and flutter just at the simple nickname, her face felt warm and dare she admit she felt a certain wetness start to pool at the core. âU-uhm I think maybeâ Y/n cut herself off trying to distract herself, looking up at the big burly man in front of her, before returning her gaze back to her works. âThis one is you dadd- sir, big nâ cuddly, a bearâ
âHowâd you know iâm cuddly?â His southern accent thickened, leaning forward onto the table, his head cocked to the side. âWell I uhâ
âIâm just playing sweetcheeks, how much for the bear then?â Chuckling he brought out his leather wallet, âSince youâre here visiting, you can just have it! I think he needs a nice adventurous lovin familyâ Wrapping the brown bear in nice tissue paper she handed the plush over, her eyes widening at the mere size of his hands, thinking about how he could man handle her into any position he wanted.
âYa from around here then?â Quirking his brow up, âHen stop it, youâre scarin my customers awayâ Y/n whined when Henry walked around to the back of the stall where she was, his hands reaching around her waist, leaving her breathless as little one of his hands pushed her into him. Her arms trying to swat away the grabby arms of her playful man, he loved rocking up to her work acting as if he was trying to pick her up. Leaving his woman bashful and bothered, with her wanting nothing more than to just come home with him already. Their own little game of roleplay.
âAwk mâsorry pumpkin, ya know I canât be away from my doll for too long, mâgoin through withdrawalsâ Henry growled into her ear, lowkey grinding his hardened cock onto her dress covered thigh. Her voice coming out in gasps, quietly thanking the tarp that was covering them from the rest of his rowdy group of bikers. âIâve- Iâve only got a few more hours here at the marketâ She whispered feeling him nip her ear, his hands gripping her waist tightly. âA few hours too long pup, I need you now, you gonna deprive me of my pussy?â
âNo but- but you know the rules! You get me at home daddy, not here, not in front of themâ She nodded towards all the small plushies facing them, her hands on each of his pecs, âFine. Whateverâ He grumbled chasing her lips with his, his scruff scratching her cheeks in all the best ways, giving her the tingly burning sensation. âI live for your lips, want them all over my bodyâ He gasped breaking their kiss, his tongue swiping over her bottom lip, Y/nâs lip gloss already covering his lips in pink speckles of glitter.
It was an understatement to say that Henry was in love with Y/n, he was absolutely obsessed. The way she talked, walked, breathed and just everything about her made him swoon and hard. Henry first met her on one of his bike stops on the other side of the country, she had been working as an ice cream girl when he stumbled upon her sweet self. He devoured her being, teaching her about herself, helping her to explore her own body. How to pleasure herself.
âDonât leave me please, iâm tired of beinâ peopleâs summer romanceâ Y/n whimpered after one of their lovefuck sessions, his hand grazing up her arm affectionately as they lay on her bed, the sound of crickets ringing through her small bungalow home. Small trinkets decorating her room of all her own little travels around the country. She hadnât given herself like this to anyone before, but she had her fair share of romances from the different men that had travelled through the town. Only for her heart to be broken each time when they would leave to go back home, to never return.
âThis isnât a summer thing, this is a for life thing doll, if youâll have meâ He whispered looking down at her, leaning forward for a soft kiss onto her lips, her eyes gleaming up at the man she had now fallen in love with over this new summer. âIâll have you, foreverâ She giggled wrapping her arms around his torso, nuzzling her head to his hairy chest, his warmth enveloping her with so much love and affection. âCome with me baby, travel with meâ He suddenly said out of the blue, leaning up on his body to look down on her, brushing back some of her hair behind her ear.
âW-wait what? Just out of nowhere? What about all my things? Where would we even go-â
âshh babydoll, just tell me yes or no nâ iâll handle everything else. I just wanna hear your answerâ Henryâs hand traced along her jaw, a smirk growing as she nodded into his hand, âYes, I-I wanna go with you Henry, take me with youâ
That sentence was all Henry needed before he packed up his babygirlâs belongings over the last few weeks of summer, hauling them into a truck and got it delivered to his stationed home somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Where Y/n now found herself truly chasing her dreams, living her days out in the sun with her own hunk, using her passion of crochet for a small side business.
Soon enough they fell into a dynamic where Henry found himself wanting to do nothing more than to care and provide for his baby, with them finding comfort in the newfound love they had for each other.
(Back to present time)
âCan I have a few of these ones delivered then? I want them to delivered homeâ He said pointing at the whole bunch of stuffies on the table, âAll of them? You want all of them?â Y/n tilted her head with furrowed brows, âYes pup, I want all of âem, put each of them in the nurseries mâbuildingâ
âShut up, we still got a ways to go with babiesâ Y/n whined pushing him away playfully, feeling his fingers cup her face to make her look at him, âmâ beinâ serious, I wanna buy them all and I want them delivered homeâ
âY-you just want me to come homeâ She smiled swaying side to side, she knew how much he loved her, in fact it was as if he couldnât breathe without her right beside him. âIs that so wrong doll? Wanna feel your tight little pussy clench around my cock, been thinkinâ about you all day, even had this just to sniff at every so oftenâ Looking down he showed her, her purple lacy underwear from the night before which undoubtedly had her juices on it. âYouâve had my thong in your pocket? All day? Really Henry?â She whispered shocked, shoving the fabric back in quickly just in case anyone walked in.
âWhat you embarrassed pup? You smell fuckinâ divine, the way you took control nâ fucked yourself all on meâ Pulling back he looked up and down, taking her in, the way she looked so fresh and ready for the day. âYouâre so annoying sometimes, now go awayâ
âYou want me to go away? Your future husband nâ father of your kids? Câmon pup donât play like thatâ Henry joined her in putting all the cute animals into a huge ikea bag, hauling it onto the back of his bike. Helping her secure herself onto the second seat, her turned around to give Y/n her own customised helmet. A pink fluffy one with bunny ears, made just for her. âY-you have to make me your wife first Henâ She smiled widely as he secured the fastening of the helmet, his heart pounding at just how adorable she looked in her own biker jacket and pink helmet.
âYou wanna be my baby wife? Want me to take care of you pup so you donât have to think about anythinâ but lookinâ pretty nâ makin cute little toys for our babies?â
âMhm yeah, wanâ it so badâ She giggled leaning forward and kissing the cleft of his chin through the stubble, the prickly feeling reminding her of when he gave that same sensation between her legs just last night. âYeah you do pup, I want it bad tooâ
âThen jus ask me already!â She whined stomping her foot that was on the ground only to pout when Henry lightly tapped her on the thigh, âEy you know I donât do well with attitude pup, thatâs not the same happy girl I knowâ
âM-mâsorryâ She whispered leaning up for another sloppy short kiss, her hands gripping onto the bottom of his shirt, watching as he then settled in front of her with her hands wrapped tightly around his waist.
âRight pup youâve got five secondsâ Henry whispered as soon as they got through the front door of their home, Y/nâs arms filled to the brim with the animals she made, only the top of her forehead peeking out as she insisted to carry in her woollen babies. âF-five?â She squealed out quickly throwing the stuffies onto the couch as she ran upstairs in a hurry, her heartbeat quickening once she heard his thundering footsteps chasing after her.
Her breath getting caught in her throat when she felt his arms latch around her waist and ironically lay her down gently onto the soft cotton sheets of their shared bed. âYou look so pretty pupâ He gushed showing his canine smile, pulling her down towards him as her dress went up to her waist. âReally pretty?â
âSoso pretty baby, prettiest of them allâ He leant down unbuttoning the front of her beautiful dress, her bare breasts popping out all sun kissed from the recent heatwave that had hit their small town. Courtesy of the fact that she had spent the weekend tanning nude (as per Henryâs request) by the pool in their backyard.
âWhat you need baby? You want my lips? Wanâ me to teach you how a woman should be loved?â Henry cooed tracing his thumb under her bottom pouting lip, his hands were holding in place the same toy she had made for him, her voices coming out strained as she ground her hips against the soft plush; Henryâs other hand cupping her face affectionately as he denied her of his kisses. Using the same bear from earlier which he had hidden for himself, he held it under her pussy just letting her play herself with it
âW-what are you doinâ pup?â Henry looked taken aback as Y/n threw off the rest of her dress before turning onto her stomach, her ass in the air as she looked back at him playfully, wiggling her hips just to add on some tension.
âI-I think I wanna try somethinâ new Henry, I want you hereâ She said shyly once again shuffling her ass back onto Henryâs denim covered shaft, feeling it start to strain against the zipper he just had to strip himself down, still in disbelief.
âBaby, you finally gonna let me take your ass? Is that whatâs goin on here? Youâre givinâ yourself to me wholeâ
âYes, iâm all yours, b-but be careful iâm nervousâ She rushed out leaning on her elbows, âAw pup donât worry, daddyâll take care of ya wellâ Henry whispered feeling that primal animalistic side of him come out, opening one of their bedroom drawers to reveal a bottle of lube they had, âThis might feel cold but iâll warm it up okay baby?â He whispered pouring a generous amount of lube onto her ass cheeks, using his hands to massage it onto her puckered backdoor. âFeels weirdâ
âDoes feel weird doesnât it honey, but youâre doinâ so well for me pup, let me just feel it out with a finger or twoâ He softly shushed her whines and moans as he pushed in his index finger into her tight ass, her thighs tingling already wanting more. âF-feels so good daddyâ She whispered feeling herself fall into a more vulnerable headspace, wanting nothing more than for her Henry to coddle and fuck her to sleep.
âFuck pup your ass is so tight, canât believe youâre givinâ me this sweet treat tonight, so desperate to be my wife huh?â
ân-no thatâs not why!â She argued back only to be interrupted by her own moan when Henry slid his finger back out only to insert back in two, ultimately stretching her poor muscles even more, âgah look at it clench over nothinâ, my pup is a slut for her daddyâ He cooed pulling his two fingers out, watching as her ass basically winked back at him with every pulse of her muscle.
âwhat are ya babyâ He whispered out more to himself, looking over her face which was looking over her shoulder, her expression flustered as her skin glimmered in the soft light of their bedside lamp. âMâyour babyâ She whispered out, her hand reaching behind her to graze up his slightly pouched belly and wide chest. âYeah? What does my pretty baby wife wantâ
âI-I want your cock in my ass, please daddyâ
âmâso proud of you pup, always rememberinâ your manners, gotta reward you havenât Iâ He state slapping his cock onto her behind while she nodded eagerly, her hands fisting the sheets out of anticipation. Henry took a deep breath in whilst he pushed the reddened head of his cock inside her warm wet hole, the lube helping a fuck ton. âA-ah daddy, so bigâ Y/n gasped out arching her back more, Henry leaned over to affectionately rub her back to help soothe the stretching pain, kisses being placed on the dimples of her back. He himself struggling to find words as his cock was being squeezed tightly in the best way possible.
âyou okay baby? you want to keep goinâ?â
âY-yes, wanna feel fullâ She gasped once she felt him push himself in inch by inch, stopping every few seconds to let her catch her breath, Henry on the other hand was really holding himself back, her ass just felt too damn good on his cock. Both of them finally let out sighs of relief when Henry had bottomed out inside her ass, although none of them dared to move knowing it would cause the start of a very hard fucking. âFuck me daddy, please, I want itâ
âYa remember your safe word baby?â Nodding her head eagerly Y/n herself started moving her ass up and down his cock, squealing at the burning yet amazing feeling it gave her, ultimately making her weak in the knees. âOh fuck yeah, my fuckinâ whoreâ He growled out, his head falling back as his hands gripped onto her soft hips while they together rocked back and forth slowly. Everything was going more or less smoothly until the friction between Henryâs cock and her ass made an embarrassing sound, causing her to completely clench around his cock.
âs-so embarrassingâ She whined plopping her head down onto the sheets in front of her, âa-ah baby donât squeeze daddy so hard or else heâs gonna finish real fuckinâ fast and you donât want that do ya?â Shaking her head she listened to the rest of what he had to say, âBaby that was not embarrassing, fuck do ya think we can make that sound again?â Smirking darkly he pulled his cock all the way back out before pushing it all in slowly, hearing that same airy sound from their fucking.
âCan daddy play with your clit sweetheart? Is that okay?â Henry whispered kissing again the dimples of her back watching as she nodded, his one arm reaching under her to play with her slick wet folds. Running his fingers through her folds thrice to lube it up with her own slickness, he started toying with her little swollen nub, her body immediately jerking forward at the sensitive touches. âgonna cum daddy, real soonâ She gasped writhing in his hold, his hips smacking against her ass as he slowly picked up the pace, all the while circling her clit over and over again until she saw stars.
âLet go for me sweetness, let daddy see his pretty baby let go, wanâ me to cum in your ass sweetheart?â
âYes daddy want you to warm up my ass, flood it with your cum pretty pleaseâ She whined half screaming into the sheets as Henry continued to rub her clit whilst she orgasmed, it was slowly causing her to feel overstimulated, his own cock following soon after as he felt her ass pulse around him; completely milking him of all he had to offer. âYou take me so good pup, my best girl, you did so well ya hear meâ
In a strained voice he continued to spill out heartfelt praises to his baby who was still lying limp and tired on the sheets, slowly pulling his cock out he winced, âp-plug daddyâ He heard her whisper making him smirk, his baby loved being full of him, who knew that the best souvenir heâd bring back from his travels was her. Reaching over to their bedside drawers he found her purple sparkly plug, inserting it carefully with shushed tones, taking extra precautions to make sure it went in comfortably.
âI wanna be here, daddy hereâ Y/n smiled turning her head, crawling up to claim her spot on his chest, his arm coming around her to pull her even closer to him. âYou want me to put on somethinâ in the background?â Teasingly he put his thumb onto her plug, tapping at it, causing Y/n to move away and whine, âstop it!â
âmâsorry baby couldnât help it, you nâ your ass are too cuteâ Softly scratching her back, he watched her eyes focus on the random Disney movie he chose on the TV, her lips smacking until she reached up for Henryâs hand to put his thumb in her mouth; another soothing act of aftercare reserved just for her, ânight night daddy, l-love youâ
ânight baby, love you so muchâHer face squished against his chest until she eventually started drooling, once she fell asleep âYou are just too precious for your own good pup, thankfully youâre mineâ
âââ

Timeless (CS55)
Carlos Sainz x f!reader
Warnings: much much fluff, bits of heattbreak, flashbacks
Summary: Carlos has had many supporters, even during his first years in racing. Deep down he knows that only one of them stands truly out and will be by his side until the end of the line.
A/N: The story is from Carlosâs POV :)
Two lovers laughing on the porch of their first house.
âWill you make me wait any longer? Iâm bored, letâs go!â Y/N handâs weâre grabbing my legs, pulling me off of my bed. It was Saturday afternoon and exactly a week after Iâd fly to England for two whole months.
Two entire months without being near Y/N. Hearing her voice. Feeling her touch. Being hugged by her and kissed on the forehead. Being encouraged by her praising words. Feeling the butterflies in my stomach every time she is around.
âOkay, fine, fine. You win! Letâs go. We will take my car this time. Yours is always squeaking and Iâm afraid we will be stranded.â I gave in on her suggestion of going to see a new romantic movie that had just been released. All our mutual friends had invited her with them, but she always refused to. Two were the main reasons why.
First, they all went as couples and she didnât want to be third wheeling. And secondly, I wasnât here. I was in Barcelona for testing. Now it was finally her time to see the movie in the comfort she chose.
I was never planning on going to see that movie. Like Lando has told me, romance movies are not my cup of tea. But Iâd sit and admire her passion about those films all day and night.
âIâm so sorry miss, but we are sold out. Maybe come tomorrow morning to check for new tickets?â The cashier tried to sound a little bit hopeful for Y/Nâs sake, but that didnât quite work.
âOh yeah, sure. Thank you very much!â Y/N put on a fake smile and took my hand in hers, leading us back to my car. Disappointment was drawn all over her face. I couldnât bare looking at her like this. I felt so bad that I couldnât do anything.
âI shouldâve gone with the guys. Why did I think there would still be availability for tickets? Itâs the highest selling movie and has such a big demand.â She was scratching her head, trying to hold back the frustration.
âIâm so sorry amorcito. I wouldâve booked you tickets if I knew earlier. We can try again tomorrow. Iâm up for it.â Truth be told, I would have fallen asleep on the cinema seat if we went to the next dayâs screening, since my father had taken me to practice.
âNo worries Carlos. Letâs just go home and we can order something. My parents are out so we can find an old dvd or play a board game.â She wouldnât even look at me. She was staring at her phone, typing to her girlfriends how in the end we didnât find any tickets.
What took me by surprise was some of the messages I peeked as I was trying to catch her attention, clearly failing.
âWill Carlos take you anywhere romantic?â
âI bet if you asked him to go to the fun fair heâd speed thereâ
âTELL HIM THE TRUTH GIRLâ
What truth? Did she want to go to the fun fair? Where should I take care? What was she hiding from me?
I turned on the car and took the opposite direction from her house, which lead to one of Madridâs biggest fun fairs ever. Especially this time of the year, it was really enjoyable and nice.
I wanted Y/N to enjoy her time. Have fun. Live freely. See her happy. I was driving as fast as I could, so she wouldnât notice where I was taking her.
Comfortable silence had take over the car ride, but after a few moments I heard slight snoring. I looked next to me during the red light to see that she had fallen asleep.
I donât even know how many hours of sleep sheâs lost due to talking with me on the phone, keeping me company, from the other side of the world. While I was warming up her voice was calming me down. It was like a ritual. But I didnât understand that I was affecting her negatively this much. I had to make it up to her.
I decided not to wake her up until we reached our destination. I turned off the radio so the music wouldnât bother her and focused on the road.
I wouldâve read your love letters every single night.
âMi guapa, do you mind waking up for a second?â I softly whispered in her ear, not wanting to startle the peace she was in. Slowly, she was rubbing her eyes and only the bright lights of the fair hit her eyes, her mouth fell open in surprise.
"Wha-Carlos what is this?"
"A way of trying to bring your smile back"
Y/N took my hand in hers and squeezed it very tightly, as if I was going to disappear. The sparkles in her eyes gave me hope and her cheeks, even though light was limited, were as maroon as ever.
"What are we waiting for then? Let's go have some fun." I opened her door and she quickly grabbed my bicep and guided us inside the funfair. She was swirling and shouting at all the games she wanted to play or the rides she wanted us to go in.
I am not a funfair guy. Even as a kid, when my sisters brought me here, I would sit out most of the rides with an ice cream on my hand, enjoying the view. I feel like with Y/N being so excited and thrilled, my inner child found what it was looking for.
What excites me is racing and speed. That day, I had found an even better reason to be excited and happy. I didn't mind the noise, the screams, the swearing, or the chilly air. I was purely happy just being alongside Y/N and seeing her with a massive smile plastered on her face.
When we entered the haunted house, we had been warned that actors pop up every now and then. She wouldn't let go of my hand, scared that in the darkness of the room I would run away. But no. I had to stop running away from her. From my feelings towards her.
I was holding her waist firmly, wanting to balance her and prevent any possible accidents. As we were close to the end of the 'tour', a witch actress scared the both of us for the last time with skeletons surrounding us.
Y/N screamed at the top of her lungs. But what she did say, almost made me fall on the ground.
"I do not want to die without having kissed you"
She wanted to kiss me? My Y/N wanted to get a taste of my lips? And as it seemed as badly as I did?
I wasted no time and in utter dark, I held her face against mine, smashing my lips onto hers, bringing the heat of her body closer to mine, wanting to secure her.
The taste of her lips was as I had imagined. The feeling I had in my stomach was levels superior to the thrill Formula One had ever given me. From race win to podiums, I had never felt like this before. It was everything I wanted. Everything I desired.
When I broke the kiss, we walked outside of the haunted house and being confronted with a visible shock on her face, but it being painted wine red. Her fingers were touching her lips, unaware of what had just happened. The other hand was on her chest.
"Is it possible to die from butterflies or being in love?" she whispered softly, coming closer to me and eyeing me directly. My own heart warmed at the sight of her being so shy and innocent. Jesus we were 20 but at that moment I felt like a 15 year old boy again, falling in love with my best friend, with whom I would share irrelevant information about my mechanics on my home's front porch.
"Don't die on me cariĂąo. I haven't even said 'I love you' yet."

honestly writing this cuz I saw @gin2212 's comment and made me teary, so were gunna finish this bad boy! not today but you know... it will happen
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, part 5, part 6
Explicit mentions of death (but of characters that are currently living) Kind of OG version of their deaths
Danny had only walked through the Wayneâs home adjacent gardens once, in a direct route to the barn. Batcow was a highlight of that little excersion.
Now, however, they were actually looking at the shrubbery shaped like boring spheres and rectangles.
He felt Jason become distant and floated back a bit, heâd turned left into a very small opening.
Inside were three unmovable cement benches that curved slightly into one circle. The well cut bushes were wilder in here, making it cramped and impossible to see over the hedge.
âThis spot used to be my favorite, when the weather was nice. Iâd come out here with a book and whatever drink Alfred had decided to make that day.â Jason looked down at a square of cement in the middle, probably where a table had been. The indents on the side of the seats, likely from the mold it was made from, had moss growing in it.
âThis seems like the perfect hideout.â Danny smiled and sat on the bench opposite Jason.
Jason hummed in agreement, he coughed awkwardly even for Dannyâs standards and spoke up again. âSo, youâre the god of death?â Jason was probably really good at looking casual and intimidating to most people, but Danny could sense the tension emanating from his core as he sat near a branch mere inches from his face with his hands in his pockets, probably wishing he could lean against something to look nonchalant.
âNope, Iâm the king of the dead. They arenât the same thing.â
âSo, youâre not Hades?â
âI hope not, Iâve met him and heâs kind of a dick.â
Jason laughed softly, he liked how it sounded âOkay, cool, so the Greek gods exist.â
âAll of the gods do, technically.â He waited for Jason to look at him. âI know itâs hard to wrap your head around, but the infinite realms isnât really a dimension on its own. Itâs the space between all dimensions. When you die you have to pass through it to get to your destination. Some people donât have a place and they end up part of my realm, some get lost, some sell their soul, others forget their lives entirely and are part of my people from the second they pass over. Then there are the never-borns: souls that form from pure will of the infinite realms. All that is part of my domain.â Danny floated up a bit to try and catch a glimpse of the stars, the smog from Gotham blocking everything. He looked back at Jason and his stomach did a little flip that he decidedly did nothing about. âBut just so were clear; hell, the underworld, and all those other things are in the infinite zone. They arenât all the same thing.â
âOkay. So, you rule over those too?â
âAgain no, once a soul gets into the correct dimension, I donât really have anything to do with it.â
âWait so if someone who believes in an afterlife sells their soul what happens?â
Danny slouched in the air and grunts, âThatâs where all the fucking paperwork comes in. I really want you to imagine the most bureaucratic way to possibly move to a new country, but you have none of your documents. Being stuck in this dimension was a fun break at first, but now all I can think of are the stacks of A-13 forms that are probably covering the castle floors.â
Jason shifted and with it came a wave of uncertainty. âIf someone was killed and brought back, what then?â
Danny has seen how ghosts in the zone get when they talk about their deaths. For many itâs all they remember of their life. If a ghost with years to think it through reacts explosively heâs not sure how it will go with a newbie. âWell, a few things. The soul could come back to a place without a body in which case you have a true haunting. If the death was quick, it could have flash formed a core, thatâs like a soul that has died fully, and then shoved back into the living body. Thatâs how you get halfas like me.â
Jason still looked cool and collected on the outside but there was unbelievable turmoil seeping out of him. âWhat if the body was dead for a while? What if a soul or core was shoved back into a body on purpose?â
âIâve only seen one revival before, but there was a lot of time warping there. The necromancers Iâve met who were trying to bring someone back didnât have access to ectoplasm which had results that are very different to⌠having it.â Danny breathed out to calm himself, letting that calm wave wash over Jason as well. âSorry.â
âNo, itâs alright.â Jason shuffled his leather jacket, âYou call it ectoplasm.â
âYeah.â Danny answered with a lilt in his voice.
âThe green goop filled pools you said you emptied, you mentioned they were corrupted.â
âI did yeah.â
âWhat would happen if someone was exposed to that?â
âHonestly, itâs not the first time Iâve come across it but never that much. For ghosts it can leave them sick and weak for days. Not like polluted water, more like if you switched out the water a healthy person drank for soda exclusively. It wonât kill them, but it will have a negative effect.â Danny thought for a second and remembered the one-time Sam got covered in a mix of good and contaminated ecto during a fight with Undergrowth. âI saw how a diluted version of it affected a living person, her mind was warped and she had the same sort of tunnel vision a ghost has if they have a particularly strong obsession.â
Jason took a breath, heâd been going strong so far. Danny may come to regret this, but he put a hand on his shoulder and floated where theyâd be face to face, letting his bottom half fade away into the ghostly tail. âI wonât do it if you donât want me to, but I can subdue your emotions a bit if you want to talk about it.â Jason looked up quickly and Danny scrambled to correct himself. âI havenât been doing that! Well, like not in a controlling way, more like the ghost version of calming down a friend whoâs freaking out. If you pushed past it I wouldnât hold you back.â
âYou should.â Danny couldnât help the questioning noise that came out of him, âThe first year I came back, I donât remember it well, but I tried to kill Tim⌠and possibly Damian. If I do go too far hold me back.â
Danny nodded, âBack in the hall, when Tim was taking an unorthodox amount of coffee cups out of his room,â Jason snorted a bit and smiled, âyou didnât fight me stopping your emotions from bubbling over. I think, with even a little help, you do in fact make the right decisions.â
Jasonâs hand came up to hold on to Dannyâs forearm, âI went out to stop the top villain at the time, the Joker. I really did think I could beat him so I turned off my coms. He⌠He beat me to an inch of my life and left me to die in the explosion heâd rigged up.â Jasonâs body was hot to the touch and he was obviously timing his breaths. âI can still feel the damn crowbar he used whenever I fall asleep. Batman had never been late before; heâd never let something like that go past him. My plan B was him, and he didnât make it.â
Danny hummed. A benefit of their shared ghostliness in needing not to use his words, he pushed through waves of camaraderie and understanding.
âI had dug myself out of my own grave. I donât remember much other than pain for months. Then Talia, Damianâs genetic mother, threw me into a Lazarus pit. The first thing I remember seeing was looking up at her terrified face, tinted in green.â
There was anger as he spoke her name, Danny controlled the waves of corrupted ecto that were threating to turn those emotions against Jasonâs true wishes.
âI was fifteen, how does someone let a child do that. I was a kid!â Jasonâs emotions were switching around and Danny could hear the forming core start too fuss. âI was just a kid.â
Danny came closer and wrapped all four of his arms around Jason, squeezing him just enough to feel a weight on him, but not so much it was restrictive.
Jason still seemed tense so, Danny did the only thing he could think of, he talked of his own death.
âMy parents built the first ever physical portal to the realms. I was messing around with friends and they dared me to walk into the useless frame. My parents always had a tendency of forgetting lab safety and making just one mistake in every build. Iâm not sure how they managed to put the on button inside it, but I tripped, hitting it on my way down. I could feel every bolt of electricity ripping me apart as the link between worlds opened directly on top of me. I died separate to my body and ended up like this.â Danny moved back and looked down at himself without letting go of Jason. âI tried to tell my parents at first, but they were always busy.
They spent the day I finally gave up trying to trap my sister; thinking she was the ghost their devices weâre picking up.â
Jason rested his forehead on Dannyâs, sighing against the cold touch. âHow old we-â
âFourteen.â
âWe were kids.â
âYeah,â Danny kept his forehead against Jasonâs. Two arms he left at Jasonâs shoulders, the other two caressing his arms.
With a wave of confidence and fear Jason grabbed Danny by the waist and pulled him in for a real hug.
They held each other there, hidden amongst the foliage, until it started to drizzle.
âWe should-â
Danny cut him off, pulling back to show the tears running down his face. âCan we go to your room?â
âYeah, come on.â
They didnât touch on the walk through the garden, or at the entrance, or in the hall. No, it wasnât until the door was closed behind them that Danny came forward and just barely touched his arm.
Jason grabs him and pulls him in again, this time resting his chin on the top of Dannyâs head. The attempt to calm Danny down just as he had for Jason made him start to cry again, this time much happier.
The surge pushed his kingly nature to shift into something more human. His arms went back to only two, his skin became that of a pale humanâs (for the most part), his ears shrank down and his pointy teeth rounded out. And, surprisingly, his form gave him pajamas.
The ecto the change required didnât accept the contaminated ecto that Jason had sent and Danny sagged into Jason, his knees buckling.
âHey, hey.â Jason hushed, âIâve got you.â
He sat Danny on the bed and went to get pajamas for himself. Once changed he laid down beside Danny and curled around him.
Danny was laying on his back, his legs bent over Jasonâs thighs, who was laying on his side up against Danny. Creating a cocoon to hold Danny in.
They fell asleep quickly, Danny held Jason's hand on his chest throughout the rest of the night.
Neither of them had nightmares.

P.s. not betaâd. So.. there might be grammar mistakes..
Thank you to @kayaedits and @kitsunecafe for the dividers!
âIt wouldnât be that bad, sweetheart. I swear. Me and your dad promises that the house is really pretty! Plus, you get the spacious room that you have always dreamed off!â
Your mom tried to pacify you, telling you all the things you will like about the new house that they bought at Hawkins, Indiana. A place you did not know even exists when they mentioned that they were planning to sell the house where you currently live and move to the said place. Eyes a bit puffy and red while your lips tremble and jutted out in a pout. Hugging your soft stuffed teddy bear, you were feeling overwhelmed. With their decision already made, you cannot help but look around your room.
The soft pinks and pastel blues are adorning every corner, the trinkets that you collected along the way throughout high school were neatly piled and arranged. The medals, awards, trophies, and books that are lined up on the shelves that pretty sure had indents on them for how long the pile has been there. She looks at you with pity, before sighing and pulling you in a hug. They know that youâre not crying because of how youâll miss you best friend. Or how youâll miss the town. No, they know you donât really care much about those.
You hate big changes. Knowing how shy and timid you are, you always prefer staying home or discovering new spots where you can just relax and let your mind drift away while reading a book or jotting down notes on things you find interesting. And your parents know that. Being painfully aware of the times their jobs affected your upbringing, they try to make it up to you every single time. With you being on their minds when they bought the house, they chose the biggest that they can find which is full of greenery in a quiet neighbourhood.
âBut.. itsââ you tried to reason out your frustration, tears slowly filling up your eyes again. âI know honey,I know. Iâm so sorry. Me and your father just wants whatâs best for you,you do know that.. right? Its not just for work but we can just see that house as our permanent house. No more moving after this.â Your mum apologised in a gentle manner, still patient while hugging you and rubbing your back. You just groaned under her hug, sniffling as you continue to bury yourself on your momâs arms. âBesides, there are public and private colleges around. You can also get a summer job there too while you are still deciding on what to study. Iâve heard that thereâs a book shop and a record store near our house, too. Maybe theyâre hiring? Oh,we even have lovely neighbours! Too nice, actually! Me and your dad happened to meet them while we were inspecting the house..â you listened to your mum telling you all about the new place, fiddling with your fingers while it slowly sinks on you that you really donât have any choice. âIts a really beautiful place, honey. I promise. We promise.â Your mum ended softly, giving you a forehead kiss.
âAndââ your dadâs voice popped the bubble you and your mum had, slightly jumping at his voice. âMaybe you can find a decent boyfriend out there. You know, better thanâ what was his name again? Frank?â He asked, his nose scrunched in disgust. You laughed at how he tried to remember you exâs name. Giving your mum a tight hug before standing up to give the same to your dad as well, you answered him while copying his expression. âYes,dad. Frank. What an ugly name, huh?â Your whole family giggled, slandering your ex while talking about what you and your mum should cook for dinner, the anxiety slowly easing in the background.
âHey mom, where do you want these?!â You shouted after your mother who is already carrying a box of kitchen utensils with a laugh out of excitement.
After a grueling 6 hour car ride, the first thing you did was immediately jump out of your family car and stretch your limbs. The air was sticky and humid, feeling the spring season already ending. You definitely did not expect the temperature on the way here despite it still being early morning. With the heat making your shirt stick to your skin, you slumped your shoulders, already tired at the thought of moving. Putting your sunglasses up your head, you made your way to the carâs boot, quickly grabbing some of your boxes that you wonât clumsily drop.
Hawkins is definitely an eye catcher. Sure, a small town. But there is something mysterious about it that you cannot help but be curious about the said town. You like how snug and tight the community is. People smiling at your parents here and there, striking up a conversation with them too. It eases your nerves that it looks like your parents chose the right place to settle after all. It looks like you will be spending the upcoming summer exploring the never-ending variety of stores your whole family drove by.
The day ended when the last piece of furniture is inside and assembled. âIâm dead..â you muttered under your breath when you plopped face-down on your bed. The house is beautifulâ Pretty is not even enough to describe it. The outside definitely shows the history and age of the place. Vintage, painted with neutral colors, while hints of greens, moss, and crawling plants adorn the vast spaces near the windows. It is definitely different from the two houses on both sides of your house. Your mind is already racing on how you are going to decorate your bedroom, already allocating the empty corner for some massive book shelves and a shrine of trinkets and random journals that you collect for fun. You just finished taking a much needed bath, giggling to the comforters when you became too excited on buying new stuff for your bedroom, not noticing your momâs footsteps as she make her way upstairs.
Your mom stood in front of you,a big smile on her face. Your giggling stopped when you noticed her presenceâ and how she is holding two pies that are meticulously packed with a bow on top of each boxes. God knows when she had the chance to bake a pie amidst the chaos of never-ending boxes and assembling furnitures together. You went quiet, noticing how your energy is not matching hers as you press your lips in a line while hoping whatever she plans on asking you for is not the one that you are currently thinking. âSweetheart can you giveââ she started sickeningly sweet before you immediately answered âno. Nope. No,no,no. Goodnight!â You tried to evade her favor, quickly hiding under you fluffy blanket and closing your eyes. Your mom, expecting the behaviour, had quickly put down the pies on top of your study desk and snatched the blanket from your body. âYou will!â She exclaimed before laughing loudly as you fight her back for your blanket. âNo! Why am I always the one handing it to the neighbours?! Iâm always the sone doing it!â You whined, already losing from your so called âbattleâ against your mother. âBecause! Me and your dad are still busy!â She tried to reason out when you know sheâs just planning to make you go out and hopefully make new friends or just meet new people. Your mom tugged a bit too hard that made you sit down. You continued whining and whinging, knowing that you already lost and you have no other choice.
You changed from your tank top and sleeping shorts to a cropped cream sweater and a plain pink skirt before brushing your hair and swiping some cherry lip gloss on your lips to at least make yourself looks presentable. With a last look to the mirror, you have put on your glasses and sneakers, before turning around to your mom. You find your mom holding the boxes once again with a cheshire-like grin before handing it to you. âYeah, you tricksterâ you mumbled and your mom knows that you are only joking as her loud laughter and giggles together with yours echoed throughout the house.
The air cooled down quite a bit when you stepped out of your house, the gate creaking as you try to push it close using your foot. Trying to ease your nerves, you looked around and drank in your surroundings. How the cul-de-sac is surrounded by trees that makes the place a bit eerie but also dreamy when the sun had set today. How the clouds are soft and plush, orange and yellows slowly disappearing while the moon and the stars slowly peek out. Slowing your steps as much as you can, you focused on the feeling of the gravel underneath your feet and just avoiding the dread of meeting new people. On your way, were slowly starting to hate the whole thing and how you wish the houses are far more apart.
Finally, you made it towards your neighbours gate, seeing that its slightly ajar which made you hesitate before deciding that you just want it to be over with and stepped inside. âScrew itâ you say to yourself while walking towards a black stained oak door. Trying to balance the other pie on top of another to fix your glasses from being crooked and your hair from being destroyed slightly because of the wind, you lifted one of your fist and is already thinking of how to escape the social interaction if they end up being too talkative.
âWell fuck that.â You heard a deep, husky voice as he talk to someone that you cannot hear clearly. You dropped your fist beside you, anxiety slowly creeping in while your mind runs hundred miles per minute if you should just come back later than to interrupt their conversation. âThey keep on trying to sell their god to me for how many fucking years already!â The man clearly exclaimed before another man let out a roaring laugh. âIf god is fucking real he will present me or you with someone that can fucking blow my balls off and suck my dick so deep that I will be convulsing at the end of the night and heâ whoever the fuck he isâ will tell me how its his gift for me,likeâ someone fucking made for me and youââ
It was the last thing you heard before the huge wooden door opened, the manâs rambling abruptly stopped and two of the most breathtaking men entered your view. One with long, curly hair that looks like itâll be soft under your fingertips. While the other one has thick, luscious hair that is not as long as the other but is styled to perfection.
âHi..?â with your face red as a beet, that was the only word you can whisper.

I'm not sure where I saw it but there are a few references to classes and teachers (like in the character book where they have subjects they're best and worst at, in a few chapters where they reference "class/es", and in an interview with satoru nii, I think, though I can't find it) â the Reddit pinned post for the manga is ood for the interview where they talked about it. In the interview, it sounded like they said it was just a pragmatic thing; the story follows the action, so there's not really any need to flesh out the school side of Furin, but that could have just been a deliberate obfuscation. I hadn't really thought about it (generally, I don't care to, because that side of fandom can get really condescending and form echo chambers of "no one else is thinking about this right or as much as us") but I found your thoughts interesting to read and thought you might have wanted to know about the teacher thing, because even if teachers are there, they haven't been included in the main story at all, and don't seem to be trying to teach them anything beyond the academic curriculum.
Thanks! I had seen that, but I try to mainly base my analysis on what's in the text itself ("the author is dead" and all that). However, I appreciate the input and I actually do have some related thoughts on this.
By the way, if you or anyone else seeing this post can tell me any specific chapters where the Furin kids talk about school stuff, please share! I totally missed any mentions of that, so my views below are all based on the assumption that the kids never mention anything school related.
A few messy thoughts:
I accept that the Furin kids do go to class, but to your point, their teachers seem ineffectual at best (and, as I'll get to later, extremely trusting). I figure that anyone who'd teach at a delinquent school notorious for year-round fighting is probably not great at their job. Before Bofurin, I imagine the teachers had all given up any hope of teaching anything and just tried to survive. Ever since Umemiya took over, they've probably been so happy to finally have some peace that they just let him and the other kids do whatever they want.
While I try not to speculate too much about authorial intent, it often feels to me like Nii has challenged himself to take as many stock tropes as he can and to use them as effectively as possible (or maybe he's just a really good writer using a lot of stock tropes lol). For example, Sakura is a classic tsundere, but it's actually rationalized in a really compelling way by his characterization. Likewise, WBK also takes the trope of invisible teachers and actually fits it into the broader themes of the story (as previously discussed in the post you're referencing).
I kinda wonder if Nii was forced to show the protagonists going to high school in order to be published, and thus chose to do it in the most cursory way possible. It kinda feels like the story was meant to be told with a cast of young adults, but maybe Nii or the publisher felt like it'd sell better with teenage protagonists in a school setting. I also suspect it would be controversial (and understandably so) to publish a series aimed at teenagers where the teenage protagonists choose not to attend high school, so I've thought the whole invisible teachers approach could be a workaround for that.
That said, the absence of teachers (and any other responsible adults) just feels so conspicuous that it's hard to write it off as purely pragmatic. Plenty of series have seemingly nonexistent teachers, but they usually avoid showing kids in settings where teachers would appear. WBK could have easily done that (e.g. by giving Bofurin an HQ near the school where they spend all their time), but instead it practically goes out of its way to rub the school setting in your face. For that matter, Nii also could have chosen a different setting where kids wouldn't have to attend school at all, but he explicitly chose to set WBK in what is very clearly present-day Japan. I don't think it's worthwhile to speculate about what Nii "really meant" by this (or if he really meant anything at all), but from an analysis point of view, this is just too conspicuous for me to ignore.
A theme in WBK that I'd like to explore in-depth at some point is trustânamely, how WBK challenges us to imagine trusting these so-called delinquents who are rejected everywhere else and to imagine that they might make their world a better place of their own accord. The absence of visible teachers really highlights this trust. The kids have been given free reign of the school to do whatever they please but, despite adult authority figures being functionally nonexistent, they've still managed to turn it into a better place.
Lastly, while I have to admit I probably fall closer to that "no one else is thinking about this right or as much as us" side of fandom than not, let me just say: fuck anyone who's condescending about it. I personally enjoy deeper media analysis and am trying to cultivate more of it around WBK in my own way, but everyone is allowed to engage with media how they want. The angle I'm trying to take is more "Hey, here's this neat thing I noticed!" as opposed to "You're enjoying this wrong." and I hope that others will do the same.
