Avoiding Plagiarism: Tips and Tricks for Original Writing
Tumblr media
Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work or ideas without proper acknowledgment. It's a serious offense in the academic and professional world, but donā€™t worry, there are plenty of ways to avoid it and keep your writing authentic.
Tips and Tricks to Avoid Plagiarism
Understand What Constitutes Plagiarism: The first step in avoiding plagiarism is to understand what it entails. Plagiarism isn't just about copying text verbatim; it also includes paraphrasing someone elseā€™s ideas without credit, using someone else's research or data without acknowledgment, and even self-plagiarismā€”reusing your previous work without permission.
Always Cite Your Sources: Whenever you use information, ideas, or quotes from other sources, make sure to cite them properly. Different academic disciplines use different citation styles (like APA, MLA, or Chicago), so be sure to follow the guidelines for your specific field.
Paraphrase Effectively: Instead of copying text directly, try to paraphrase the information. This means rephrasing it in your own words while still giving credit to the original source. This demonstrates that you understand the material and can convey it uniquely.
Use Quotations for Direct Quotes: If you need to use a direct quote, always put it in quotation marks and cite the source. This clearly shows that the words are not your own and gives credit to the original author.
Keep Track of Your Sources: As you research, keep detailed notes of where you found each piece of information. This will make it easier to cite your sources accurately later on.
Use Plagiarism Detection Tools: There are many online tools available that can help you check your work for potential plagiarism. These tools compare your text to a vast database of sources and highlight any matches.
Understand Common Knowledge: Not all information needs to be cited. Facts that are considered common knowledge (like "The Earth orbits the sun") do not require citation. However, when in doubt, it's better to cite than not to.
Get Permission When Necessary: If you want to use someone else's work in a way that isn't covered by fair use or academic conventions, be sure to get permission from the copyright holder.
Letā€™s put these tips into practice with a fun quiz!
Quiz Questions
Question 1: What is the most effective way to avoid plagiarism?
A) Use direct quotes without citations
B) Paraphrase without giving credit
C) Cite all sources and give proper credit
D) Copy and paste information from the internet
Question 2: Fill in the blank: Plagiarism can be avoided by using ____ to give credit to original authors.
Think youā€™ve got it? Drop your answers in the comments and letā€™s see whoā€™s mastering the art of original writing! āœļøāœØ

Going through things to upload in my queue and forgot I had these edits from one of @akanemnon's Twin Runes pages from a long while back. I debated for a bit on whether this is something I'd throw up or not because of Kris' scar not being very visible from the angle used. Decided to share the edit since I was more interested on what Kris' appearance would be without the shade over their face.

What the fuck is going on in schools of business?
It seems like so many grifters come out of business and marketing.
I think I'm missing something, some nuance, but it seems like there is a very serious lack of accountability and ethics in business and marketing that isn't as prominent in other fields.
I gotta finish up my shift, but man, I wanna look into what ethics are taught in business classes in the U.S.

Knowing people are making six figures by copying and pasting Wikipedia articles, stealing information and tracing art, I now feel more proud of every single piece of work I create and engagement I receive because I do not resort to theft for my work!

Things my ADHD has made me forget:
Where I put my damn keys JFC-- (they are in my hand)
Due dates if I don't set alarms
What day it is
Whether or not I gave my dog her after dinner treat (which she's fine with because it usually means she gets to double dip)
The 200+ videos in my "Watch Later" playlist
To Eat
Things my ADHD has not made me forget;
That I copy pasted an entire book into a paper and didn't cite it

tbh i know it's me being biased because irma is a summoner main but there's something so funnily accurate about the wol being a summoner re: the whole azem thing. convoker outfit huh! azem's special spell being Use Party Finder and summon allies HUH! and as we've established*, summoning is the missing link between creation magicks and regular sundered arcanima. though of course the funniest reveal of them all was to find out WHY the phoenix rotation had spells called shit like "brands of purgatory" (extremely ā“ for most of the MSQ) and that the true reason is that you pirated copyrighted material created by none other than lahabrea himself and then fixed it yourself. the DRAMA
*as we have obviously all read and agreed with my archon thesis on the topic

gonna say, something or someone being misogynistic is on its own a good enough reason not to like it or not to spend time with that person. It's not just that misogyny is so normalised that not watching a show or not spending with someone just because of misogyny is treated as not enough of a reason - it's also that as a woman, you are under constant scrutiny and constantly thrown tests to show that you are 'not one of the difficult ones', that you can 'take a joke'.
But 'your friend keeps saying degrading things about women' is a good enough reason not to hang out with that person or not to go to a gathering. 'i read the last book by his author and it was deeply misogynistic' is a good enough reason why you don't want to read things by that author anymore. 'This comedian specifically makes a lot of mean-spirited jokes about women' reason enogh not to watch that or see that show, even if your friends want to go. 'This content creator keeps going on weird tangents about women' reason enough not to watch their stuff or support them.
and it is especially a very good reason not to date someone.

Okay - re Ficbook.net and the (unauthorized) Russian translations.
I spoke with @karlachismylife (who is a gem and a delightful person).
You have to have an account to report fics there, and the author that I was told about has locked comments.
If you want instructions (and to make an account), I'm happy to help you with what needs to be done. Basically, it's spam the report until the system locks you out.
Juju's gone ahead and:
messaged the author about it, asking them to take the fics down since they don't have author approval.
messaged her friends (who are also Russian and have accounts) to report the works. (note: it is also very late/early in Moscow, so it may be a bit before they wake up.)
She told me (verbatim) that it is a very bad translation - it is not adapted to Russian and used a phrase verbatim instead of the intent.
Most likely, this person threw it into Google Translate, adjusted some of the super egregious stuff, and threw it up. It happens in other fandoms too - to the point there are ads out there looking for people to do exactly what this person has done.
If you're one of these people that has copied works over to ficbook.net or similar sites, I hope you perpetually stub your pinky toes and your shoes are always a little leaky/socks are always damp. Fuck you.
People put so much love and passion into their work and you decide to try and make a dollar off their back (when in the US, fanfic cannot be monetized)? How disgusting, awful, and shitty of you. That is how you lose those fics and those authors in the first place - by plagiarizing, copying and translating works without consent.
I'm sorry I don't have more concrete actions for us non-Russians to take - I was hoping making an account wasn't necessary, but I refuse to give that site more clicks and revenue and accounts that support them.

hbomberguy really made a video ending like, five different careers just so he could make it 100% clear that he's a bisexual bear who owns fetish wear and would definately dom a fuckable twink.
Bizarrest dating agency tape ever.
EDIT - To the people reblogging this in outrage because 'he's not a bear' um... it's a silly tumblr post, fuck off.
