322: Rival Boys // Animal Instincts
Tumblr media
Animal Instincts Rival Boys 2014, Tiny Records (Bandcamp)
Rival Boys were an Ontario indie rock band active in Toronto from the late ‘00s to the mid ‘10s. They were a three-piece comprising sibling vocalists Lee and Graeme Rose (on bass/violin and guitar, respectively) and drummer Sam Sholdice, with a sound somewhat like Vancouverites Mother Mother on a blue day. (Whom, as an aside, I have discovered are now way more popular thanks to TikTok than they ever were at the time—they have 8.3 million listeners a month on Spotify, which is like… 38 times more than the New Pornographers.) Both Roses affect a mewl somewhere between Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano and Sarah McLachlan, with Lee’s more powerful bellow usually taking the lead. In conjunction with the cold mountain violin that periodically sweeps the floorboards, it gives their otherwise youthful affect a nostalgic somberness. They were emphatically a rock band though, capable of kicking up a surly crunch: they didn’t have the dance rhythms of the Metric/Land of Talk acolytes who were all over CBC Radio 2 (the national public alternative music station) at the time, preferring to lope along like the Pixies.
Rival Boys were no longer a going concern by the time I moved to Toronto in 2017; I discovered them when I found a CD of their 2009 EP Life of Worry in the basement of an Ottawa house I shared with a friend who’d known somebody in the band back in high school. It was the first time I can remember coming across a group remotely in my social radius that struck me as unequivocally good. I listened to that five-song EP to death for a few years, and I still think they really nailed their sound with it; as a result, I had kind of a chilly response to their 2014 farewell Animal Instincts when I found it at a punk flea market. They’d shed just a touch of the raw-boned vulnerability that had made their loose, imagistic lyrics cling like a thin flannel against a harsh wind; a bit less bite to the guitar; a hair less heedless urgency to the vocals. The serviceable cover of Wolf Parade’s “I’ll Believe in Anything” seemed on the nose; the new rendition of EP highlight “Construction Work” didn’t make my heart stagger around like the original.
But listening to it now, I think Animal Instincts’ real sin was just not being the record I’d fallen in love with. Life of Worry is special, but there’s plenty to like on the LP. Opener “Fortune” edges the hell out of the listener before finally giving us some of Lee in full thunder; “Young and Old” is a showcase for the close harmonies, wet-eyed violin, and martial drumming that were Rival Boys’ most distinctive element; “Don’t Bloom” gives us a little of everything Lee does well, flowing from a distracted, introverted croon to a high wail that arcs like a flaming arrow at a Viking funeral. On this listen anyway, even the new version of “Construction Work” is doing it for me. There’s a nice closure to the fact that it was both among the first and last things they cut: the original with its blazing, desolate frustration sweeping into a folk reel outro that feels like transcendence; the revision more brittle, reserved, like people on the cusp of leaving adolescence behind giving it one last go, the quieter outro never quite taking off but settling into a low, churchy organ drone. It feels like a dignified goodbye.
Which the record in fact was, although it may not have been clear at the time. Graeme dropped out of the music scene altogether; Lee was quiet for a few years, but soldiers on with the very good Ace of Wands; I’m not sure what Sam’s up to these days. Time moves on—it’s 15 years since the EP, 10 now since the LP. I’m sure for the band members and their fans it feels like barely half that time, like finding a book you set down just the other day covered in dust and all your friends so old all the sudden! If ‘00s indie music can be said to have been about anything, it was surely about digging deeper into the experience of being alive, celebrating the wild joy of it while you can, making something of that. Rival Boys surely made something, and it’s nice to have something physical of it to keep.

I met my first (ftm) boyfriend while on a psychiatrist-approved week-long vacation to attend a LGBT youth camp at the tail end of my 4 month mandatory stay at a mentally unwell child jail for wet cardboard box babies or whatever because my psych team was like u r not actually all that unwell u r just being subjected to things which you should perhaps not be subjected to and we think it would be good for your wellbeing to be around other gay people and it was except I formed this really warped relationship under these circumstances and then went to stay with him in the city for like a month after I was released and he was a few years older than me and his parents were both dead so that went as well as one could expect. I don't really remember it. I remember sleeping on a futon on a floor in a basement and being shown around the city and acting like a neurotic freak and having sex and it was all so wrong and off and it doesn't feel real it was all horribly disturbing because I was disturbed and I feel bad for him. He really liked me, and treated me astonishingly well, but I was nothing but a pain. I was still really unwell and after he broke up with me I hitchiked from the small town I had been unfortunately returned to and went to a city few hours away so I could sleep with another older ftm I met at that camp and I had all these delusions that he would let me stay there with him but once the orgy dispersed and all these 30 year olds intermingling with teens left the apartment he instead just gave me change for the bus and directions to the youth emergency shelter where I would stay for a month until they were like umm hey social services can u find a home for this kid cuz the parents ain't getting involved. The older orgy ftm is a sailor now btw. No clue about my ex. I think there was a point to this at first. I've forgotten. Thinking about tomorrow has given me a stomachache. I am considering just hitchhiking to Toronto and figuring it out when I get there. Seems far less stressful than anything else I may be put through tomorrow. Goodnight.

"T.T.C. CAR OPERATOR COMMITTED FOR TRIAL," Toronto Star. March 8, 1934. Page 3. --- Accused of Endangering Safety of Persons - Charge Follows Crash ---- Alfred Kinsman. T.T.C. one-man car operator, charged with endangering the safety of persons, was committed to trial by Magistrate Browne in police court this morning. Bail was set at $500.
The charge arose out of a collision that involved an oil truck and a street car on the morning of Feb. 12, at the corner of Parliament and Dundas Sts.
"I got on a street car the morning of Feb. 12 at Pape and Danforth Ave.," testified Mary Heppleston. "I paid my fare and got a seat. We were going along Dundas to Parliament St. and we stopped at Parliament to pick up a passenger. When we started up again I felt a collision and was thrown across the street car back against the seat again and then fell on the floor and someone fell on me." She said she received injuries to her back, chest, ribs and side, and was still taking treatment for them.
"No one asked us if we were hurt. The inspector took over the car."
"I was driving north on Parliament St. to Rosedale," said a truck driver for a big oil company. saw this car stopped, picking up passengers. I saw the car start up again and I had to swing to the west to avoid it but its front end hit the rear of my truck."
"What happened to both vehicles?" queried the crown. "The truck had the pipes at the back broken and the street car was rocked." "The first thing I did," said witness, "was to shut the pipes to prevent the oil going all over the street." Kinsman, he said, didn't leave the scene of the accident.
Pavement Was Wet "Was the pavement slippery?" "It was wet."
"In reality you hit the street car," declared Defence Consel I. S. Fairty. "You were coming at such a high rate of speed that you skidded into the side of the street car."
"It is impossible to go at a high rate of speed in a truck as heavy as that," retorted witness. "I was going at about 10 or 13 miles per hour."
Witness admitted he had not driven that type of truck very long.
"I was just going to cross over Parliament St. ahead of the street car when I saw this truck coming north," said George Goddard, a witness, who was driving his own car. "I stopped and I saw this truck swing west in order to miss hitting the street car, but his rear end swung over and hit the side of the street car."
Witness said that he had stopped when he saw the truck coming, although the street car didn't.
Cross-examined, witness said the truck had "skidded" into the side.
Defence contended that there was no case established. Mr. Browne decided otherwise. "He will be committed for trial."
"Don't get into trouble again in that time, or I will bring you back and send you down to the reformatory." Magistrate Browne warned Parkyn Coates, 17, charged with theft, as he put him on probation for two years. He was caught sleeping in the basement of an unoccupied house. He had in his possession a silver cigarette case that he said he stole out of a parked car.
"He has no record, but he has been causing trouble," declared Crown Attorney C. L. Snyder. "He has the habit of running away from home." His father admitted accused had been in juvenile court several times before.
"Do you think a mental examination is necessary?" queried the bench. "No." replied the father.
"Well, he is young yet. I will give him a chance and put him on probation," decided Magistrate Browne.

Now that I understand Dream Scenario more I like it more like it’s by no means a perfect movie. The last 1/4 is fucking nonsense like the fake ad for the dream technology is way too fucking long and it’s confusing the fact it jumps from the plot to that and then back to the plot it 100% could have eased into a timeskip rather than hitting you in the face with a shovel. I think because of how long the fake ad is too the last portion of the movie after that feels so rushed. Some scenes also could’ve been trimmed a little like the fuckin jizz fart scene absolutely could’ve used some Trimming in the editing department holy shit. It slows down the movie so bad. Like keep the scene or keep parts of it but cut out a lot of them just like. Sitting there.
I liked the fact it had horror elements to it like the genre is difficult to describe, it’s like if Inception had a baby with Nightmare on Elm Street and when there’s that one dream of Paul beating that kid with a hammer it was horrific. The sound of the hammer breaking his skull was so realistic it was genuinely disturbing. And that’s good I liked that it was disturbing. I liked that it was fairly realistic outside of the fact it’s a dude in peoples dreams.
I think it’s a tour-de-force of Nick Cage’s acting chops. People forget he’s a good actor and he is. He’s just been in a lot of absolute garbage. In Dream Scenario he manages to play a totally normal guy thrust into the limelight and he plays it so realistically that you forget he is Nicolas Cage. I could 100% believe he’s a frumpy college professor in Massachusetts because I had frumpy college professors in Massachusetts who are exactly like that. He’d fit right in in the bio department of the college I went to.
One thing I also really loved was the set design like my biggest complaint with a lot of modern movies is that the set design is so sterile. Everything looks like a shitty hallmark movie set where it’s the same plastic house and everything’s painted white. The sets in this movie looked lived in. The daughter’s bedroom has stuff in it and stickers all over. The basement has a shitty old tv with a bunch of DVDs like YES. That is what a real house looks like. That’s what a real house feels like. Fantastic. Even the college settings like I think it was filmed in Toronto but it looked exactly like colleges in Massachusetts where it’s like 60’s concrete walls and that particular style of tile floor that’s a bitch to walk on in wet boots. It’s an amazing touch that makes the movie feel real.
All in all I think Dream Scenario was a well-made, excellently acted film that has some issues with the ending. If you’re someone who likes movies and likes looking at movies with a level of analysis, you’ll probably like it. But for the average filmgoer I think it might be too weird or off-putting because the experimental dream shit can easily overshadow the actual point. 7.5/10.

How is Mold Getting into Your Building
Mold is an unwelcome intruder in many buildings, causing potential health risks. The initial step in preventing mold growth and preserving a healthy indoor environment is understanding how mold infiltrates your building. Because mold travels through often microscopic spores, it can gain access to your property through a number of entry points when triggered by moisture and supported by organic materials. Mold most commonly enters indoor spaces after water damage through windows, open doors, and insufficient vents. To address mold effectively from flooded basement cleanup and mold removal in Toronto, contact Canada’s Restoration Services.
For more insight into how mold is entering your buildings, read on.
Poor Insulation
Aging or water damaged insulation contribute to condensation, which, in turn, promotes and supports mold growth. When warm, moist indoor air encounters a cold surface, such as inadequately insulated walls or windows, condensation arises, offering the moisture that mold spores require. Ensure that your building is well-insulated to maintain consistent indoor temperatures and diminish the likelihood of surface condensation. Proper insulation not only conserves energy but also functions as a barricade against moisture penetration.
Moisture Trouble
One of the primary factors enabling mold to thrive within your building is water damage in Vaughan. Mold spores are ubiquitous and can become problematic when they discover a humid environment in which to take root. Leaky roofs, a flooded basement, compromised foundations, malfunctioning plumbing, and improperly sealed windows and doors all serve as potential entry points for moisture. When rainwater infiltrates a vulnerable roof or when water accumulates in a poorly ventilated space, it creates the ideal breeding habitat for mold. To prevent mold's entry through moisture intrusion, consistent maintenance is imperative. Regularly inspect your building for leaks and ensure that seals are tight to keep moisture at bay. Additionally, maintaining well-ventilated indoor surroundings can help regulate humidity levels, making the premises less hospitable to mold.
HVAC Systems Need Maintenance
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are essential for maintaining a comfortable indoor atmosphere, but they can also facilitate the spread of mold. Mold spores can infiltrate the HVAC system through outdoor air intake vents, and if the system is not properly maintained, it can become a breeding ground for mold itself. Wet, dirty, dark, and often overlooked, HVAC ducts can accumulate dust, debris, and moisture, making them an ideal habitat for mold to flourish. Consistent HVAC upkeep, including regular cleaning and filter replacements, can aid in preventing mold. It’s a good idea to consider the installation of air purifiers or UV-C lights within the system to exterminate mold spores and forestall their growth.
Mold Removal Experts in Toronto
Understanding how mold infiltrates your building is imperative for effective prevention and management. By tackling issues related to moisture intrusion, maintaining HVAC systems, guaranteeing proper insulation, and opting for mold-resistant building materials with a leading restoration company, you can substantially diminish the likelihood of mold infestation within your premises. Regular inspection and maintenance by Canada’s Restoration Services offer a proactive stance on moisture control which will go a long way in keeping your building free of mold and ensuring the health and well-being of its occupants.

A flooded basement is a large pain – to not point out a potential insurance coverage nightmare. You want to stop being caught off guard by a flooded basement.
If you wish to have your basement water free, we've professional basement waterproofing providers. This will save you time and money on DIY projects as sump pumps and sewage systems are quite difficult to put in or repair. Our skilled plumbers have the background and years of expertise in dealing with these companies and supply water leak detection and sump pump installations. In some instances, they can pick up future sewage issues that would occur and help prevent these points from main to break and costing you a fortune to repair. The competent teams concerned also carry out common upkeep to ensure that your techniques are up-to-date.
Some towns and cities may supply a sump pump set up rebates. For instance, in Toronto the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program offers as much as $3400 should you set up a flood protection device in your home. In this submit from Home Help, they offer a diagram on the elements of a sump pump as shown under. This consists sump pumps repair of such parts as a check valve, a float change and float. Cast iron sump pumps are usually stronger than thermoplastic, but each are designed for lengthy life. Besides the stronger materials, the advantage of cast iron pumps is that they distribute heat from the motor higher, maximizing the cooling capacity of the sump pump.
Water underneath the basement floor automatically activates the pump when it reaches a selected stage. The pump redirects the water away from the home to stop imminent flooding. The sump pump set up cost could be as high as $5,500 if you would like to construct a new system, with the possibility sump pump of the amount lowering to $2,500 when you solely need some parts. When comparing costs based on the sump pump type, a pedestal pump prices between $60 to $170, and a submersible one ranges from $100 to $400. I recommend getting a battery backup sump pump system with sensible wi-fi capabilities.
If you uncover moisture in your basement, dry it out with a dehumidifier and examine again a few days later. If DIY isn’t your factor, name a professional to service your pump. They’ll ensure the pump is working at capability and check the backup energy source and alarm. Of course, that is dependent upon the dimensions and magnificence; pedestal pumps are less expensive than mixture pumps, for example. In the same means, properties have a small pit that’s dug into the floor of the basement to collect water that filters by way of the unfastened earth surrounding your foundation.
For instance, properties in wet areas want stronger or greater pumps than these in dry areas. Check the horsepower of the pump when considering size – it should be proportional to the volume best sump pump canada of water underneath the basement. The larger the water volume, the larger the horsepower must be. The performance of pedestal pumps is much like that of a flushing toilet tank.
One of the most typical weaknesses of sump pump methods is the float swap that turns on when the water rises. If this swap jams in an "off" or "on" position, it can sump pump replacement lead to sump failure or sump pump burnout. The Zoeller® sump pump swap contains several design elements that help prevent jamming.
Mold, rust, mildew, and decay can improve your dangers of airborne disease, and enhance the depth of bronchial asthma attacks, colds, and flus. Regularly testing your sump pump is an effective way to make positive that you have constant protection from flooding. Check your pump for any indicators of mildew and that the sump pump float change just isn't sticking. If you discover the pump is running quite loud, has a musty scent or has not been turning on after a heavy rain, you could need it repaired. Both forms of sump pumps could be computerized or operated by hand on demand. Both typically have a float swap, which prompts the sump pump when the water degree within the sump pit reaches a certain height.
Your issues shall be examined by an professional that will assist you find the proper sump pump resolution. Count on Hy-Pro for skilled sump pump installation and repair services for your house or business building. Choosing the right sump pump repair and best sump pump is extremely beneficial to your own home and your pockets in the lengthy term. If your own home has a basement, you’re most likely or ought to be familiar with sump pumps.
When that water reaches a certain degree, the float activator will set off the pump leading to emptying the pit of water. Once it's activated, the pump will move water by way of the discharge pipe to outdoors your house. Once the equipment pumps repair is activated, it uses about one gallon of city water to pump two gallons from the pit. A whole of three gallons might be moved away from your own home, limiting the prospect of flooding.

How To Avoid Mold and Water Damage in Your Basement
Assuming you live in the Canada , you may not be familiar with seeing many homes with cellars; in any case, in all honesty, there are a few homes all through the area that truly do as a matter of fact have cellars. Most homes are worked without Flooded basement Toronto in view of typhoon related issues. Building regulations demand that residence floors be worked above storm flood rise. On the off chance that a storm cellar is permitted to be fabricated, it for the most part is worked as a "non-decent" space, thus, at the end of the day, property holders can have the cellar for additional capacity however no rooms. Regardless, while storm cellars give additional space to capacity and cooler puts to hang out on hot days, they likewise have their portion of dampness related issues.
With regards to storm cellar inconveniences, dampness is the most well-known issue in storm cellar. The dampness most generally enters from outside sources however can be delivered inside too. Frequently, most mortgage holders are uninformed that the dirt around the storm cellar walls can contain a lot of dampness. The justification for high dampness content in the dirt could incorporate surface water that is leaking down into the dirt or even from a high water table. A high water table could be made sense of by weighty downpours that cause the water table to ascend higher than the cellar floor. Frequently, water can find its direction inside a storm cellar by gravity or through a break or imperfection in the water security layer of the establishment. Water can likewise be pulled up by a "wicking activity" or "pushed up" by hydrostatic tension from the dirt under the walls or floor. In the mid year, warm clammy air from outside can go into the house and lead to buildup on the cool cellar walls or floor. In regions that might encounter frigid temperatures, the accompanying circumstance can happen assuming there is a break present: the water will enter through the break then freeze and grow. With every virus season, the break will ultimately get bigger because of the broad properties of the frozen water.
No matter what the reason for water harm, storm cellar dampness issues frequently include: establishment breaks that release, standing water/overflowed storm cellar floors, pasty colors (blooming), shape development, wet protection, soggy rugs, stodgy smells, high stickiness and rotting wood. In the event that a mortgage holder encounters any of these issues, they ought to direct a through examination of the cellar and cellar environmental elements. While checking the outside, a property holder ought to check the ground slant around the cellar - is it permitting the water to empty in as opposed to away out of the residence? What sort of downpour seepage does you home have? An unfortunate downpour seepage framework will keep on giving an enormous volume of water that can spill in or overpower storm cellar waste frameworks. Are there any noticeable breaks in the outside or inside structure? Serious or dynamic breaks might be a sign of future primary issues or even present hazardous circumstances. Likewise, they could be an illustration of a sink opening under you home. Check the window wells - are there any indications of spilling? Water might gather in the wells, prompting conceivable spillage into the cellar through or around the window.
There are multiple ways of forestalling dampness harm issues in a storm cellar. The principal general guideline is no soil cellars. Albeit these are more uncommon in this day in age, it is great to bring up that soil floors hold a gigantic measure of dampness as well as can emit different gases. While building a cellar, verify that you have a story channel with a snare introduced at the absolute bottom of the floor. Without a story channel, any water that is spilled inside can't get out. If necessary, introduce a sump siphon and ensure that the sump cover is firmly fixed. Sump siphons are much of the time utilized where flooding because of a high water table may be an issue. Furthermore, waterproof the beyond the establishment walls and introduce an edge waste framework.
A frequently ignored issue in cellars is dampness that comes from moistness. The most straightforward method for controlling stickiness is to deplete water fume delivered in the house to the outside. Indications of high stickiness include: buildup on windows, pipes or different surfaces too a general feeling of dampness in the air, soddenness and smells. Frequently, mugginess will be made by uncovering the cellar outside air (open windows), having wet clothing hung to dry in the cellar, putting away kindling in the cellar, as well as a dryer vent that depletes inside. To decrease mugginess, there are a few things a property holder can do: introduce energy-proficient windows, protect walls and cold water pipes, protect floors if conceivable, run dryer vents to debilitate straightforwardly outside and don't dry clothing or kindling in your cellar. In summer, utilize a compact dehumidifier or cooling to decrease moistness. In warm, moist climate, keep storm cellar windows shut. Run the heater fan ceaselessly to flow house air. The way to keeping storm cellar mugginess low is to keep them very much ventilated and to keep extra dampness out of the storm cellar.
One more perspective to consider with regards to keeping your storm cellar liberated from dampness and shape is capacity. Too many put away things, particularly on the floor, will permit stowed away corners to get considerably wetter and support shape development. Dispose of unused things and store things on racks. Try not to store in cardboard boxes that promptly assimilate dampness and effectively experience the ill effects of shape harm. The way to appropriate cellar stockpiling is to permit air to course.
Dampness issues are brought about by a development of an assortment of water sources.
