i prefer amateur art with its mistakes and rough spots so much over overpolished professional art. if something's created perfectly i tune out the effort it takes to make it perfect. but if somethings created poorly, on purpose or on accident, it draws me in so much more because i can conceptualize the creative process more easily

Another great thing about "Gen-X" was the flat-out body horror of some of these powers! Sure, we've had the odd morlock running around, but now we've got some fully tragic and messed up body horror front and centre, baby! A boy whose chest and face were blown up because of his power! A girl who tears off her own flesh to reveal a new form beneath. And our resident badass, Angelo Espenosa aka: Skin! Sporting six (?) extra feet of.... well... skin. As powers go, it's no optic blast, but my dude made it work!

Women talk about all sorts of things that a lifetime spent with a brother doesn't factor into, and the ones sitting around her are no exception. They'd been teasing one another about best dates and worst dates, and when Beth hadn't volunteered any information one way or another, she was asked point blank. The little mutant nurse hems and haws her way through the explanation that she really doesn't do the whole dating scene. That unlike most people she knows, she's never found herself romantically attracted {or...physically craving the same kind of intimacies...} to people the same way that many others are. She might see a smile that seems alive, or an interesting face she might want to sketch. That the few and far between times that she's found herself actually attracted to someone, it's been a friend she knew inside and out, and even then...she laughs, awkwardly. "Is...complicated." Because complicated is a better word than broken. Other questions include hobbies and interests, and she confides that besides being a voracious reader, she likes to dance. Surf. That there isn't a lot of time between gruelling work-shifts and her dedication to going to Mass at least twice a week, and never missing confession. She is Catholic, after all, and her parish often needs her more than she needs social engagement. They smile at each other and then her, leaning in like the fates themselves. A single name comes from them like a choir, all their voices at once.

Beth blinks. Turns away from their proud looks. And she blushes.

Kurt is wonderful, and very sweet. He has been the kindest person to her here and in the wilds beyond the embrace of the X-men. She has to admit they have much in common and a quiet way when they have time to spend together. She would be lying if she didn't say his velvety indigo fur, his gleaming eyes, and his unspeakable grace weren't things she found pretty about him. Okay, and his accent, the gentle German lilt of his voice. But... Why, with everything he has to offer...would he want someone so....ordinary? "I can't imagine he be remotely interested in me, but he is a lovely person," she says. ~*~ She spends the rest of the afternoon, sketching.

This week I watched “Barber Westchester” (2022) Inde/Drama

Wow this was a trip. A very surreal story about a kid named Barber who gets their dream job only to find out it’s not what they thought it would be. It’s very funny and surreal, full of meanings, twists and turns. The animation is excellent, very unique and highly expressive.

The movie has a lot of meanings to interpret, but in my eyes it’s mostly about the pain and horror of growing up and changing as a person, and about learning to be ok with not knowing the answers to life’s big questions.

I really enjoyed the storytelling, and how the film plays with your expectations, it’s basically impossible to predict where it’s gonna go.

The music was great, very inde, I’m pretty sure it was all made for the film.

My favorite part was the animation, it’s very simple and messy, but full of shape and color. All the characters were extremely expressive. I loved the parts where a character’s face would literally take up the whole screen. The character and place names were also very funny.

It’s free on YouTube, and I highly recommend it to people who like art and surrealist work. 9/10
