Jiang Cheng deciding to trust Wen Ning but forgets to actually tell him and so it just makes it super fucking weird when Jiang Cheng approached him and is like “Hey you remember that time when I was having the second worst day of my life and you showed up and admitted you let me live half my life as a lie in order to hurt me because you’re almost a Lan Wangji level simp for Wei Wuxian?”
And Wen Ning, trying to understand what the fuck is happening “uh…. Yes?”
“Great I have to go to a conference at Qinghe Nie and I need you to watch my kids. Consider it repayment.”
Wen Ning is about to have a heart attack, the scariest guy alive with a purple whip designed to kill things like him and who has a huge grudge against him has summoned him to Lotus Pier and is now asking him to- wait what?
“Uhm… sir,” Wen Ning is so ready to bolt, “isn’t Sect Leader Jin going to the conference too?”
“Eh? Yeah, oh no not that kid, I need you to watch my kids, these ones.” And Jiang Cheng steps aside to reveal like eight 3-9 year olds who were hiding behind him.
“Zi-shushu! Mom said I’m not supposed to be friends with fierce corpses!” One of them shouts and Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes.
“One, it’s hopping corpses you can’t be friends with because you let them into your house, second of all she can’t tell me what to do. Anyways Ouyang’s brat that Zizhen said he’d come and help, he got in trouble and kicked out of the conference…. Well? Can you do it?”
Jiang Cheng returns to find Wen Ning sitting on a pier covered in lotus blossoms, and small children including some he knows are from the town, and Zizhen is being drowned in the lake by some of Jiang Cheng’s more… rambunctious kids. Wen Ning gets invited to babysit anytime, he still hasn’t been told Jiang Cheng approves of him and he doesn’t know how to explain to anyone that he’s pretty sure that these kids could probably take over the cultivation world except they all insist that “Zi-shushu” said that they couldn’t do that until he died.

Get Together
This fic was also inspired by this prompt from @mingcheng-prompts
Jiang Cheng stares at the letter in his hands.
“You can’t be serious,” he says, but when he raises his eyes at Nie Mingjue he seems deadly serious.
“Of course I am,” Nie Mingjue replies and pushes a scroll towards him. “My courtship gift.”
Jiang Cheng blinks but doesn’t move.
He knows he can’t say yes—could never, not with everything that happened—but he wants to.
Jiang Cheng learned to appreciate Nie Mingjue over the course of the last few gruesome weeks, learned to rely on him and trust him to have his back in battle—and yes, maybe even fell in love with him—so of course he wants to say yes.
But he can’t.
“I have nothing,” he tells Nie Mingjue and doesn’t make a move for the scroll. “My Sect burned. My parents died. My people are scattered.”
He’s not even sure he still has Wei Wuxian.
“There is nothing I can give you.”
“Good thing then, that I’m here for you and not your Sect or for what you can give me,” Nie Mingjue easily replies and doesn’t seem put off in the least.
“No,” Jiang Cheng tells him, though the word barely makes it out of his mouth.
Nie Mingjue observes him in silence for a few minutes, before he sags with a sigh.
“I respect your wish,” he says but he still pushes the scroll closer to Jiang Cheng. “You should still take this. Consider it a gift from one Sect Leader to another, if you must.”
“I shouldn’t take this,” Jiang Cheng replies as he gets up.
If he accepts this, and finds something thoughtful, something useful, something he would like, then his resolve will crumble.
And he can’t afford that. They are still at war. His Sect is still barely more than ground into dust.
“Nie-zongzhu,” he bows low, before he walks out of the tent, away from Nie Mingjue, without looking back.
Jiang Cheng wonders not for the first time when fate will stop taking things away from him.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng has to admit that he thought things would change between him and Nie Mingjue with the rejected courtship, but they don’t.
Nie Mingjue treats him the same as before, except that now Jiang Cheng flushes whenever Nie Mingjue comes close or smiles at him or is simply nice to him.
Jiang Cheng is flushing a lot, even though the war is still raging.
He really wishes he could have said yes to Nie Mingjue.
~*~*~
Fate does not stop taking things from Jiang Cheng. First his brother-in-law, then his sister and to top it off his brother as well.
The only thing left is Jin Ling.
And—inexplicably—Nie Mingjue.
“What do you want?” Jiang Cheng asks, a shade of desperation to his voice, because Jin Ling won’t stop crying and Jiang Cheng is inevitably going to fuck him up, just like he fucks up everything else.
“I’m here with an offer of courtship,” Nie Mingjue says and puts another letter and the same scroll on the table.
Jiang Cheng wonders if Nie Mingjue lost his mind.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” he hisses, allowing the anger to take over instead of giving in to the want and hurt.
“Nothing. I simply have made up my mind about what I want. And what I want is you.”
He sounds completely serious as he says it, too, and Jiang Cheng wonders if Nie Mingjue lost his sanity on the battlefield.
“Look around you, Nie-zongzhu,” he snaps out, aware that Jin Ling flinches at his tone and Nie Mingjue at the title.
Jiang Cheng tries to calm Jin Ling down and tries to ignore Nie Mingjue and his reaction as best as he can.
If he calls him anything but Nie-zongzhu then he’ll crumble and give in. And he can’t do that.
“I have nothing left in my life,” Jiang Cheng belatedly finishes and Nie Mingjue frowns.
“That’s not true. You have your nephew and your Sect. That is not nothing. And you have me, too, if you accept the courtship or not.”
“Why are you so—” Jiang Cheng wants to say ‘good’ but the word chokes him up.
Nie Mingjue seems to understand it anyway.
“Because you deserve it.”
“I don’t,” Jiang Cheng says over Jin Ling’s head, the boy still crying and Jiang Cheng woefully unprepared to deal with him.
“I think you do,” Nie Mingjue softly says and then stands up to correct Jiang Cheng’s grasp on Jin Ling.
It doesn’t immediately calm him down, but Jiang Cheng feels more secure holding Jin Ling like that and the small kindness is enough to bring tears to his eyes.
“I can’t,” Jiang Cheng whispers, and hides his face in Jin Ling’s baby hair. “I can’t.”
There’s a brief silence where Jiang Cheng thinks that Nie Mingjue will simply storm out on him, but then he feels lips pressed against the crown of his head.
“I’ll be here when you can,” Nie Mingjue promises him right before he leaves.
Jiang Cheng can’t bear to watch him go, and it’s only much, much later that he realizes that while Nie Mingjue took the letter with the official courtship, he left the scroll behind.
Jiang Cheng doesn’t touch it.
~*~*~
Jiang Cheng is shaking as he steps off Sandu and if he’s not careful he’s going to crush the scroll in his hand.
Maybe it would be better anyway.
“Where is Nie Mingjue?” he demands to know from the first disciple that has the guts to step close and to their credit, he is immediately led to a study room.
“What the fuck is this?” he hisses as he throws the scroll at Nie Mingjue. “What the hell are you up to?”
It seems like he caught Nie Mingjue off guard because the scroll hits him square in the chest but when he lowers his gaze at it, understanding crosses his face.
“It’s a gift,” Nie Mingjue slowly says and picks the scroll out of his robes to put it on the table.
“A gift,” Jiang Cheng hisses. “Preparing me for the fact that you’re planning to invade us?”
It’s—just the thought makes Jiang Cheng sick, because he barely had time to build Lotus Pier back up again. He only managed the most necessary buildings so far.
Not to mention the fact that he trusted Nie Mingjue, that he thought he was in love with him.
“It’s nothing like that,” Nie Mingjue reassures him and Jiang Cheng has to give it to him, he stays remarkably calm.
“Then explain what it is!” Jiang Cheng demands and Nie Mingjue sighs.
“I mean, I guess it was intended that way, once, when we first started? But it’s not anymore. We keep track of the layout of all the Sects. I know you all thought us stupid but Qinghe Nie always expected a war ever since Wen Ruohan first came into power centuries ago. We made it a habit to sketch out every Sect’s layout so that in the case of a war we could help them rebuild. None of you are as sturdy as we are.”
It’s a sensible explanation and it makes sense, Jiang Cheng guesses, but the hurt about the perceived threat from Nie Mingjue of all people still sits deep.
“Why give it to me?”
Nie Mingjue stares at him as if he’s stupid, and Jiang Cheng thinks that’s probably fair.
“It was supposed to be a courtship gift; my gift to help you rebuild Lotus Pier like it used to be if you wished it so. You rejected me, twice, and I thought it cruel to keep this from you despite that.”
Jiang Cheng can’t keep Nie Mingjue’s eyes any longer and so he stares down at the scroll again.
He had looked at it, of course, and he had studied it very carefully; there were paths and buildings on that plan that even he didn’t remember.
“Show me the other ones,” Jiang Cheng says, because he needs the proof that this was not simply to attack him again, now that Yunmeng Jiang is weakened beyond belief.
Nie Mingjue simply nods and leads Jiang Cheng to a huge library. It seems like Nie Mingjue knows his way around here very well, because there’s no hesitation as he makes his way over to a shelf and gets three more scrolls out.
“We even have one of the Wen Sect, in case someone more sensible ever took over once Wen Ruohan inevitably destroyed everything,” he says as he hands the scrolls to Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng opens all three of them, just to be sure, but they are what Nie Mingjue promised.
“You wanted to help us rebuild,” Jiang Cheng whispers and Nie Mingjue shrugs.
“Qinghe Nie always wanted to help in the case of war,” he agrees and before Jiang Cheng can snap at him that he is deliberately misunderstanding him, he goes on. “But yes. I specifically wanted to help you rebuild.”
“Why?”
“It was supposed to be a courtship gift, remember?” Nie Mingjue asks with a sad smile and takes the scrolls back from Jiang Cheng.
“But why?” Jiang Cheng asks again, because that’s the part he doesn’t get.
Everyone left him alone; his family is dead, Lanling Jin is just waiting for him to die or move a toe out of line, Gusu Lan is too busy rebuilding themselves and for all that Nie Mingjue tried to court him—twice—even Qinghe Nie didn’t so much as offer help.
Well, Jiang Cheng guesses he has to rethink that part, because clearly Nie Mingjue did want to help.
“Why me?”
“Because you’re fierce and beautiful and strong. You’re a natural leader, you’re a good Sect Leader, a good uncle. Because I admire you and I’m in love with you,” Nie Mingjue easily says as if it means nothing to him to say all of that out loud, about Jiang Cheng of all people.
It means the world to Jiang Cheng.
“Ask me again,” he whispers, begs almost, because he’s tired of keeping himself from this.
He’s tired of rebuilding and of raising Jin Ling and having to do it all alone and if Nie Mingjue wants this, still, after Jiang Cheng was already stupid twice, then he’ll take it.
He will allow himself at least this happiness.
“Jiang Wanyin, will you let me court you?” Nie Mingjue asks without hesitation and just the thought that Nie Mingjue waited even though Jiang Cheng rejected him twice, that he still wants him, brings tears to Jiang Cheng’s eyes.
“Yes, please,” he breathes out and Nie Mingjue doesn’t waste any time before he pulls him into a tight hug.
“Thank you,” he mutters into Jiang Cheng’s hair as if he’s the blessed one here, when really, Jiang Cheng can’t believe that he should get this lucky.
“I’m sorry I was stupid,” Jiang Cheng says into Nie Mingjue’s shoulder.
“You weren’t. There was a lot going on, and I understand,” Nie Mingjue reassures him and Jiang Cheng slings his arms around his middle.
“I like you, too,” Jiang Cheng belatedly says, and even though he’s not yet ready to tell Nie Mingjue that he’s in love with him, too, it doesn’t seem to matter to Nie Mingjue.
“That’s good to hear,” Nie Mingjue gives back, and pushes Jiang Cheng away from him, just far enough to duck down and press a light kiss to his lips.
“We’re going to take this slow, okay? Rebuilding first.”
Jiang Cheng has difficulties swallowing around the lump in his throat, so he simply nods, grateful that Nie Mingjue seems to understand what he so desperately needs.
His Sect back to a point where he doesn’t have to fear for their simple survival every night, and a reassuring, steady presence at his side.
“Thank you,” he says again with feeling and Nie Mingjue smiles at him.
“Always,” he promises.
And for once in Jiang Cheng’s life, someone keeps that promise.

When A-Yuan gets sick and Wen Qing doesn't have the supplies she needs to properly treat him, Wei Wuxian can only think of one place to go for help.

The first time Zewu-jun plays for him he is five and the man is trying to comfort him, playing soft songs good for soothing children. It works to a degree but he wants his gege, he wants his gege to play his lullaby. Zewu-jun apologizes and tells him that his gege is hurting right now, and needs to be alone to get better.
When he plays the xiao, A-Yuan says, "you're holding it wrong!" When he turns fourteen, he learns to play guqin, and is many years ahead of his classmates in that regard. A large factor in that is how much he has practiced Inquiry. He has grown up hearing snippets from the jingshi, of Wangji attempting to reach a spirit that never answers.
When he's sixteen, he hears a familiar tune played in the forest, he and his fellow juniors battling a stone god. It's been years since he's heard it, and he wonders why this man, Mo Xuanyu, knows it so well.
Or, Lan Sizhui grows up and learns, and remembers.

Lan Sizhui was home.
tell some storm* by qurbat (31k+) *the moments with Sizhui are in chapter 2, however I highly recommend reading the whole fic, it’s adorable.
"We were raised as a generation of war, A-Yuan," Xian-gege said to him. "If your generation choses to be one of love - well, I don't think any of us would be opposed to that."
In the aftermath of the events at the Guanyin temple, the cultivation world scrambles to understand their current reality. A man roams the countryside with a string of white in his hair. Another sits on the highest seat of power with a ribbon of red around his forehead. The younger generation turns out to be full of romantics. Nie Huaisang is to blame for everything, always. Jiang Cheng realizes that happiness has been more that 16 years overdue.
Wei Wuxian declares that it's time that bitch pays up.
After a generation of war - much to the consternation of the elders, much to the delight of the young, much to the pleased shock of the subjects of the tale - the world welcomes a love story with open arms.

He huffs a sigh. “Fine. Just - let’s just make it the law of surprise, shall we? That’s nice and simple, eh? Leave it up to destiny what will bring us back in balance. Let it drop something of yours into my lap, something small, and we’ll call the debt paid.”
Three debts, three repayments.

There's a lunatic in Mo Village! And to Lan Sizhui's surprise, Hanguang-Jun has decided to bring the madman back to the Cloud Recesses! How embarrassing!
A mostly canon-compliant look into Lan Sizhui's thoughts and childhood.
on being a big boy by emberloey (1k+)
“My little A-Yuan,” Dad had said the next morning, kneeling down to A-Yuan’s height with a smile, “all grown up now. Soon you’ll be hunting without your poor old dads.”

When they have both mostly recovered, and A-Yuan is back to his smiling, playful self, Lan Wangji presents him with a forehead ribbon. A-Yuan’s little fingers bump into Lan Wangji’s thumbs as he traces the cloud motif along it.
“You are Lan now. This is very important,” Lan Wangji tells him and A-Yuan looks away from the ribbon to meet his eyes. “You must not take it off as you please. Only family may touch it.”

A-Yuan is here. A-Yuan, who Wei Ying loved so much. A-Yuan, who was taught to laugh just like him. Wangji hugs him to his chest and curls over him, ignoring the way the wounds on his back pull and tear. “I have to take care of you,” he says. “I will not leave you.”

Home is Cloud Recesses now, and that's a thing Wei Wuxian is still getting used to. He still feels like a guest here, most days, though Lan Wangji has done everything to make him feel at home. He stands out like a sore thumb amongst the serene disciples and flowing white fabric.
Cloud Recesses has been home to Lan Wangji and Sizhui for years. It is their home, where they've built their family.
The thought warms Wei Wuxian even as it sits a little ill with him. He's an intruder here, in their homes, in their lives, the same way he had been in Lotus Pier.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 17 second part
(Masterpost) (Previous Post) (Pinboard)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!!
Breaking Good
Wen Qing comes to visit Wen Ning in their backyard meth lab, and tells him that he fucked up a recipe, merely by taking a whiff of the concoction. She uses the approved "wave fumes toward self" way of smelling that you learn in high school science if you live in a country that believes in teaching science, which OP does not.
Wen Ning wants to know if they are going to have a feud, and she tells him there already is one. She tells explains to him that they're good Wens, not evil Wens, and that Jiang Cheng is fucked, and they should send the Jiangs away in the morning before Wen Chao comes around.
Wen Ning whines at her about all of this, shifting into little-brother persona and acting like he didn't just take down 40 of Wen Chao's soldiers in a single night. He does this same persona shifting in his later unlife, with Wei Wuxian. When there is trouble, he's extremely effective, and can even tail WWX and Lan Wangji without getting caught, but then he is hopeless when dealing with turnips or children.
Here, it seems like a version of Wei Wuxian's own little-brother persona, in which he pretends to be helpless so that his sister can take care of him.
#studyblr
Wei Wuxian comes into Wen Qing's head shop to ask her for medical books. He loves his brother so much he's volunteering for a research project. We've seen him be clever before; we've seen circumstantial evidence that he's a good student, but now we're going to see him actually buckling down and doing intellectual work.
Wen Qing thinks its hopeless and wants Wei Wuxian to get some rest. But he gives her puppydog eyes, so she sets him up in her library.
Wei Wuxian reads a huge pile of medical books and learns interesting things about the human body.
(more after the cut)
Hopefully he does not splotch ink all over them while he holds this wet brush directly over the page. Why does he even have a brush in his hand? Is he taking notes in the margin?
Wen Qing eventually tells him to take a break and go see Jiang Yanli.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Jiang Yanli is tending to Jiang Cheng, gently telling him to suck it up by citing their father, which is probably not the greatest idea.
Yanli's wearing dark blue with white and looks awesome. It's not Gusu Lan blue, but the blue and white is an interesting choice for the excruciating heart to heart they're about to have.
Wei Wuxian shows up looking terrible, or the Xiao Zhan version of terrible, i.e. handsome and a little scruffy. But also worn out, unhappy, and fragile.
Jiang Yanli wants him to rest, but he wants to find a way to repair Jiang Cheng's core, and his mind races, trying to think of where he can get books and who can help him. His thoughts instantly go to Cloud Recesses and Lan Wangji. His face lights up at the thought that Lan Wangji will help him, and he hops up, ready to dash off and find him.
The first time I watched this I was like, dude yes you’re in love, but you can’t just dash off to find Lan Wangji, not when there’s a war on. This time I was like, actually wow things would turn out a whole lot better if you got Lan Wangji to help you, instead of coming up with your own plan.
Mother Mother Can You Tell Me
Jiang Yanli tells him to slow his roll. He's pushing himself too hard and she's afraid he will collapse. Then Wei Wuxian comes out and says what's driving him: maybe all these disasters are his fault.
It's telling, I think, that he cites Madame Yu, not Jiang Cheng, in this moment, even though Jiang Cheng has blamed him much more thoroughly and consistently. He's talking about one mother figure, to another mother figure, and looking for absolution.
He super does not get what he's looking for.
Jiang Yanli slowly lets go of him and goes the fuck off. She asks, rhetorically, what he's to blame for, and then lists off all of the shit that's happened. She finishes up by saying, look at our situation; blaming won't help anything.
It's unclear, because language/translation, if her answer is "it doesn't matter who's to blame" I.E. "yes, it's your fault, but I'm letting it go" or if she is saying "how does blaming yourself help anything?" I.E. "it's not your fault, stop being a drama llama."
Her body language, though, seems pretty blameful - she lets go of him, yells at him, sits down and turns away from him. And his reaction is not one of shared grief, or of someone who is trying to get over himself; he's totally crushed, and he literally never unburdens himself to her again. Even when he asks her, much later, about love, he immediately backs out of the conversation.
There is no violence in this moment and her reaction is understandable, but this is kind of similar to that one time when his brother choked him in a beautiful field of grass, in order to make himself feel better.
Then she kind of relents and takes his hand, telling him that she needs him and reminding him that he promised that they will go back to Lotus Pier. I don't remember him promising this, but okay.
He puts his head on her lap and he cries, she cries, comatose Jiang Cheng cries; FUCK this episode.
Jiang Cheng manages to cry only one tear and does it on the side of his face that his siblings can't see because he's not going to give them the satisfaction of sharing this moment with him, I guess.
When Wei Wuxian puts his head on Jiang Yanli's lap, it's part of a ritual for them, that they both are comforted by; he does it again much later, after they return to Lotus Pier. But this ritual does not actually do anything to relieve his burdens. As a male adult, and the only Jiang Clan disciple with any abilities, it falls to him to save the clan, whatever it takes, and he is heavily aware of it.
Wen Qing comes along and sees the sweet part of this complicated Shijie-Shidi dynamic, and decides to help with Wei Wuxian's research project. When the trio had just lost their parents, gotten sick, been pursued by enemies, & had one of Yanli's little brothers horribly wounded, Wen Qing was like, eh, I'll do the doctor stuff but that's it. But lap-crying is another level.
Wen Qing: Nooo don't put your head on her knees I failed my saving throw
Group Project
Wen Qing goes and cleans up the mess in the library, putting everything in order and settling in to read systematically. Wen Qing probably has the prettiest bullet journal. (OP looks proudly at the 100 loose slips of paper and piles of random stuff on her own desk)
Wei Wuxian has shaved and rested and comes in with a tray of food for Wen Qing, and then goes to his table in the back to start working. He claims he made "porridge" for her and that she has to eat to gain strength, and she gives him an intrigued expression. This moment is just blatant het baiting.
In fact the food he brings her is clearly not porridge, which might just be a translation error, but also he totally can't cook, so it's not clear if he's joking and Yanli or Wen Ning made the food, or if this is just inedible.
The Things We Do For Love
Yanli is working in the meth lab and coughing a lot. Yanli's chronic illness is a sign of what's to come for Wei Wuxian, because strong cultivators don't get sick. Yet Yanli, as a physically vulnerable person, who has either a weak golden core, or none, is still intrinsically valuable. Her presence in this scene is a reminder that Jiang Cheng's life is not, actually, over; he just feels like it is.
While Yanli cooks the meth, Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing have a study montage that is the equivalent of a training montage, except without "Eye of the Tiger" on the soundtrack.
Jiang Cheng remains unconscious. Apparently if you stick nails in the top of someone's head, you make them sleep, and in the back of their head, you turn them into part of your zombie army. Fortunately Wen Qing's aim is good. Jiang Cheng is looking devastatingly handsome as usual the TV version of unwell, and has grown a perfect Dorito-chip of stubble on his chin to go with his new 'stache.
Eventually Wei Wuxian changes back into his non-vampire robe and he finds the answer in an old scroll book. The Ikea instruction picture shows arrows going from the guy on the left to the guy on the right. Clearly it's not a great procedure for the guy on the left.
Wei Wuxian's face shows us exactly how not great.
Like walking in the rain and the snow and there’s no place to go and you’re feeling like a part of you is dying
He goes outside and gazes up at the trees and the sky as he contemplates the sacrifice that circumstance is forcing on him. He's not even making a choice at this point; his choice was made the moment he found the procedure. But it's going to be a tremendous loss for him. He values sword cultivation at least as much as Jiang Cheng does; he even fell in love with a boy over crossed swords. So he sits and just kind of comes to terms with this new understanding of his future. (Big gifs here)
Wen Qing finds him sitting, stunned, on the porch. She doesn't know what's up so she just sits quietly with him until he's ready to tell her.
She doesn't love the plan.
Thunder, Th-th-thunder
Wen Ning is bringing food up when he sees them arguing, and he is startled by situationally appropriate thunder and lightning. Having recently watched The Lost Tomb Reboot I've come to expect thunder and lighting to appear on cue in any possible situation, so the fact that this mini-storm clears right up again doesn't bother me.
What About You?
Wen Ning dashes inside to see what Mom and Dad are fighting about. They're having a polite shouting match because Wen Qing refuses to yank out Wei Wuxian's core.
Wen Qing: I hate the idea of harming you Wei Wuxian: I don’t even understand that sentence
Wei Wuxian doesn’t, of course, feel that he is important in any way, and ignores her concerned and appalled expressions in favor of telling her to just do it anyway. Amazingly, this does not convince her.
OP’s 177cm-tall son keeps telling her this
Then Wei Wuxian plays the "you know Jiang Cheng" card, which...I guess she does? Maybe he was chatting her up more than we saw in Cloud Recesses? He hasn't given her the comb or anything yet. Wei Wuxian explains that Jiang Cheng cares about gain and loss, and cultivation is his life. If he can only be ordinary the rest of his life will be ruined.
Wen Qing asks the question that nobody ever asks him: What about you?
Wei Wuxian has literally nothing to say to that, possibly because the question is so new to him.
Wen Ning doesn't know what's going on but comes squarely in on team Wei, of course, and begs his sister to Do The Thing. How fucking horrified is Wen Ning going to be when he learns what The Thing is? What he is personally going to help do to his beloved friend? Yikes.
Wen Qing caves, warning them that the chance of success is only 50 percent. Wei Wuxian is happy to take those odds.
Lan Wangji, projecting his voice from Episode 46: fifty percent, are you fucking kidding me?

Mao’er Makes A Friend
Wasn’t it enough that Wei Wuxian got his brother a puppy? Now Jiang Cheng wants him to LIKE her, like he likes all the other dogs. Wait. What other dogs? Lan Zhan? What does he mean “other dogs”?
Part 2 of JiuJiu Gets A Puppy
Read more Kristina Writes Tiny Stories
His eyes narrowed at Mao’er. He hadn’t seen her move, but he suspected she was plotting.
“Wei. Wuxian. Are you paying attention?” He looked up at Jiang Cheng, offended. “Of course I am. You were talking about irrigation. Do I need to give you input on irrigation?”
He looked back at Mao’er. This time, she had definitely moved. Still sitting, but sitting...closer.
“First of all, I didn’t ask for your opinion on irrigation.” Jiang Cheng sounded dangerously calm. “Second of all, that was ten minutes ago. Lan-zongzhu asked for your report on how the Yunmeng Jiang juniors are progressing.”
Oh. Oops.
Wei Wuxian dragged his attention back to the meeting he had been forced to attend at Cloud Recesses. Well, “forced” might not be wholly accurate. He had been very nicely and very firmly asked to attend by Jiang Cheng, Lan Zhan and finally, da-baizi, with full Zewu-Jun formality. And everyone else was there, so he suspected it would have been considered rude if he had declined. Although, he thought, it was very unfair that Nie Huaisang seemed to be dozing behind a fan in the corner.
It wasn’t so much that he didn’t want to be there. He liked talking about the different training curriculums, and he was the only person who regularly taught in both Lotus Pier and Cloud Recesses. But these days, being around Jiang Cheng meant being around Mao’er. And Mao’er was—complicated.
Wei Wuxian was perfectly aware that giving Jiang Cheng a puppy had been his idea. It had seemed like such a good idea at the time, and he had worked very hard to accept that dogs did not have to be the terrifying beasts of his nightmares. Mao’er had been one of Jin Ling’s prized husky puppies, so Wei Wuxian had been able to spend the first four months of her life petting her soft baby fur, feeding her pieces of meat from his fingers, and trying not to flinch when her tiny teeth playfully nipped his fingers. His heart had melted a little more every time she had rolled on her back, legs curled up for a belly rub. Jin Ling had even made Wei Wuxian teach her to sit and stay, explaining that it would help Wei Wuxian bond with her.
And oh, it had been worth it. There had been the smallest twinge of apprehension when he’d slid her into a basket to give to Jiang Cheng. But the look of hopeful love on Jiang Cheng’s face when he’d seen Mao’er for the first time had dissolved whatever trepidation Wei Wuxian harbored. It was one of the best moments of Wei Wuxian’s life, and not just because Jiang Cheng had cried.
Somehow, though, over the last year, puppy Mao’er had turned into adult Mao’er, and it worried him. No, she wasn’t big. She didn’t bite or snarl or try to steal his food. In fact, she was very well behaved, always glued to Jiang Cheng’s heel, moving when he moved, sitting when he stopped. But she was smart. Eerily smart.
For one thing, she could sword fly. Not on her own, of course, but in a moment of weakness, Wei Wuxian had made a flat platform that expanded like a fan and hooked to Sandu’s hilt. He never thought it would actually work, but of course, Mao’er turned out to be adept at balancing. Jiang Cheng took her everywhere with him, her nose always turning up to sniff the wind as they flew. It was unnatural.
And for another, she would carefully hold anything Jiang Cheng handed her until he asked for it back. He even let her carry Sandu once, glaring at Wei Wuxian when his mouth had dropped open in shock.
Most unnervingly, Wei Wuxian was sure she watched him when he wasn’t looking.
Today, she was inching closer to him, and he couldn’t figure out why. He’d only caught her doing it once, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that every time he looked away, she did this odd sitting scoot that moved her closer to him without ever standing up.
“Stop looking at my dog like that,” Jiang Cheng snapped, and Wei Wuxian blinked up at him, surprised by the sharp tone. It had been a long time since Jiang Cheng had seemed this upset with him.
“She’s moving toward me,” Wei Wuxian tried to explain, but it sounded ridiculous even to him.
“Of course she is.” Jin Ling smoothly interrupted Jiang Cheng’s growing annoyance, patient as always when it came to dogs. “She adores you.”
“But why?” Wei Wuxian asked, trying not to whine and failing. Next to him, he felt Lan Zhan’s tiny sigh.
Jiang Cheng was less subtle. “I can’t imagine,” he snorted. “But she’s trying to win you over. She did it with Huaisang too.”
Wei Wuxian grimaced, thinking Mao’er might have been more successful with Nie Huaisang if she hadn’t eaten so many fans when she was teething.
Jiang Cheng misinterpreted the expression and splotchy red indignation bloomed across his face. He stormed across the room, followed by Mao’er, to stand in front of Wei Wuxian, hands on his hips.
“How can you still be afraid of her? You picked her out! You trained her! You even got to name her! And you were never afraid of anyone else’s dogs until Fairy. Why is it just mine?”
The room got very, very quiet. Again, Wei Wuxian sensed Lan Zhan’s reaction, tension this time.
“What other dogs?” Wei Wuxian asked, confusion knitting his brows together.
Jiang Cheng exploded, shifting into outrage in the blink of an eye. “What do you mean, what other dogs? You live in Cloud Recesses with the country’s most famous dogs, and I have never once heard you complain about them!”
It did not seem possible, but the room got even quieter. Wei Wuxian felt the blood drain from his face as he turned to look at his beloved husband who would never, ever lie to him.
“Lan Zhan? What dogs?” Wei Wuxian’s voice cracked, and he could not believe the guilty look on Lan Zhan’s face. It was not possible.
“Wei Ying, I did not know you were afraid of dogs before...” Lan Zhan trailed off, a flush creeping up his neck. “Before you came back. You were here numerous times and did not seem bothered by them. But once I knew, we made sure you never had to be around them.”
The tone in Lan Zhan’s voice was almost like pleading.
“Laodie, the pekes live all the way over in Mengshi,” Jingyi added unhelpfully, as if Wei Wuxian had any idea what Mengshi was. “In the last four years, they’ve never caused you any trouble, so what difference does it make?”
Wei Wuxian shot out of his chair. “Show me. Now.”
Lan Zhan clearly did not want to, so in the end, da-baizi sighed and beckoned for Wei Wuxian to follow him down a twisting path toward the edge of the great forest. They ended up at the gate of a house he’d only ever seen from a distance and had always thought was empty. There were half a dozen golden, furry logs galloping around inside a fenced courtyard, their flat black noses snorting with enthusiasm. It wasn’t a particularly graceful or elegant run like Mao’er’s, more of a rolling waddle, and Wei Wuxian had a hard time believing these were dogs.
A Lan disciple was sitting in the yard with them, throwing a small wooden ball and ruffling the long hair of the animals whenever they got close to him. Wei Wuxian knew that disciple.
“A-Yuan?” Wei Wuxian didn’t yell, but he didn’t have to.
Sizhui glanced up and froze.
“Adie,” he started, jumping to his feet.
Wei Wuxian pointed a finger at him. “Don’t ‘adie’ me! You knew? This whole time? I thought pets weren’t allowed in Cloud Recesses!”
Sizhui paled and looked around nervously, waving his hands at the yard.
“Wei-qianbei, don't say that. These are not pets. These are Lan-laoshi’s award-winning Pekingese. Lans have bred Pekingese for so many generations, they are considered members of the family. Lan-laoshi has been teaching me the art of bloodlines and traits for breeding.”
Sizhui smiled fondly at one of the ridiculous things that had come over to pant on his feet. Wei Wuxian surrendered immediately, swayed by Sizhui’s obvious pride and affection.
“How did I miss this?” he asked, turning to Lan Zhan for some kind of answer. But when he was immediately distracted by the dark pools of Lan Zhan’s eyes, the slope of his nose, and the faint curve of his lips, he remembered that perhaps he didn’t spend quite as much time observing his surroundings as watching his husband’s face.
Jingyi patted his shoulder consolingly. “So now you know. Who cares?” He muttered under his breath, “They’re barely dogs anyway. Not like the Nie mastiffs.” “Yeah!” Jiang Cheng was annoyed again, and Wei Wuxian was confused again. “You aren’t afraid of the Nie dogs either, and I know you see them all the time!”
“Nie Huaisang doesn’t have dogs?” He heard the question in his own voice.
Everyone turned to stare at him except Jiang Cheng, who grabbed his arm and dragged him over three decorative bridges, around one large koi pond, and down the hill to the Gusu Lan stables.
“I thought those were small horses,” Wei Wuxian exclaimed, peering at the shaggy animals Jiang Cheng pointed at.
Granted, he’d never looked at them that closely, but now that he thought about it, it was very strange for horses to be rolling around on the ground. And those did look more like paws than hooves.
But no.
Wait.
No.
“They have saddles. I’ve seen the saddles. I’ve seen your son ride them,” he accused Jiang Cheng, who did not look even remotely repentant.
“You didn’t think it was weird that Chifeng-Zun had miniature horses in his war room?” Jiang Cheng thundered, and Wei Wuxian looked at him blankly.
“No. Not really.” Everyone knew the former Nie zongzhu was crazy about horses.
They all paused for a moment until da-baizi laughed, the light music of his voice breaking the silence.
“That is exactly something Mingjue would have done,” he agreed with a wry smile.
Something occurred to Wei Wuxian, and he slumped heavily to the ground.
“Jin Zixuan’s dog statues? Those were real dogs, too?”
He didn’t even bother to look up at their reactions. Of course they were. Those fragile-looking sculptures with the silky crested ears that sat on decorative pillows had been alive, and he’d just never noticed. He shuddered. Thank the gods he’d never tried to touch one.
To his surprise, Jiang Cheng sat down next to him, bumping his shoulder.
“You really didn’t know? This whole time, all these years, I thought…” Jiang Cheng swallowed audibly, and Wei Wuxian looked at the damp corners of his brother’s eyes with dawning horror.
“I thought it was just me. That you just didn’t like dogs and you made a fuss because you didn’t want to live with them.” Jiang Cheng’s voice was low and hoarse. “I mean, it was fine because you were more…”
Wei Wuxian cut him off so he wouldn’t say something that would make them both cry in front of everyone they knew. “I really didn’t know.”
He felt something cold and wet under his hand and he moved his fingers, absently scratching a soft nose and velvety ears, thinking about all the stupid misunderstandings of the past. Would he ever stop finding things he needed to apologize for?
He looked back at Jiang Cheng, ready to say he was sorry. But Jiang Cheng was looking past him, a soft smile on his face. Wei Wuxian followed his gaze to his own hand resting on Mao’er’s head, a wide-open doggie grin on her face.
As soon as his eyes met hers, she licked his face and laid her head on his lap. He had to laugh. He had to. She had finally won.
He looked up into Lan Zhan’s face, overwhelmed by the love he always found there.
“Lan Zhan, I think we’re going to need to get a dog.”

Episode 46: The One with All the Yunmeng Bros Angst
gross, ouyang and yao are talking. let’s ignore them!
blah blah plot plot blah
ooh thank god, wwx is now the one talking
being all detective-y and asking relevant questions
I LOVE MY SUNSHINE BOY WHEN HE'S BEING CLEVER
wwx makes some Plot Relevant Point and yao is like I DISAGREE bc ofc he fucking does
LOL WWX'S FACE WHEN YAO INTERRUPTS LIKE THAT
IT'S LIKE HE'S BITING DOWN ON HIS TONGUE TO NOT SNAP SOMETHING BACK
kudos to him on his self-control tbh but it's wasted on yao.
wwx is all asking things like why are you ladies fessing up now, oh and btw that's a real neat bracelet you got there...
and then nhs is like, gee i wonder what kind of person would've sent these ladies here today
LOLOLOL NHS IS SUCH A TROLL OMG
and yao is like DETAILS DON'T MATTER, WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING ANYWAY LET'S GO MURDER FOR JUSTICE AGAIN
and everyone else is like, HEY, THIS LOUD GUY HAS A POINT LET'S GO MURDER
okay, they don't actually say anything about murder but they're harping about "justice"
The last time they did that, it resulted in murder so i'm gonna go ahead and assume this time isn't any different
lwj: many skeptical points remain
THANK YOU, LWJ, FOR BEING SENSIBLE
oh, and i would like to point out that the crowd had been getting rowdy
but the minute lwj interjected there they all fell silent
My guy didn't even raise his voice and was able to shut up a whole room full of people.
I LOVE YOU HANGUANG JUN
lqr: what are they?
wwx: SO MANY.
wwx makes some Points and is like so we got some witnesses now but where's the HARD EVIDENCE GUYS??
and yao is like, whatever, we'll find it sooner or later now that we know THE TRUTH
and wwx's reaction lolol
it's like oh my god how stupid is this guy, that's not how it works, that's not how ANY of this works
I FEEL YOUR PAIN, WWX, I FEEL IT IN MY SOUL
ppl are blabbering Plot Stuff
i'm just gonna enjoy the occasional shots of wwx and lwj's beautiful faces
blah blah blah plot plot plot blah
gosh, my boys are so pretty
LOOK AT THEM BEING PRETTY, I LOVE THEM
(i say as the crowd devolves into vicious mob mentality)
wwx's had enough of this and turns to leave bc angry mobs are old news at this point
And we all know how he ended up last time there was an angry mob
but yao and some rando interrupt his exit as if they have ANY RIGHT to speak to my sunshine boy at all
Eventually we DO escape sword hall and the mob of stupid people and our boys are alone together wandering lotus pier!!!
they're reviewing Plot Info and bouncing ideas off each other and IT'S BEAUTIFUL, THEY'RE SO SMART AND IN LOVE
They determine that they don't have enough clues to say who the mysterious 3rd party is
but they def have enough evidence showing jgy murdered nmj and is generally an evil conniving bastard.
lwj mentions that he's going to send word to his brother to be careful since jgy is EVIL FOR SURE NOW.
oooh, our boys just came upon the jiang clan's ancestral shrine
wwx freezes, eyes red-rimmed and shiny, MY POOR SUNSHINE BOY
lwj: what's wrong?
ALL OF HIS ATTENTION IS GLUED TO WWX'S EVERY MOVE ALL THE TIME, ISN'T IT??
SEE HOW INTENTLY HE LOOKS AT WWX??
me too, lan zhan, me too
wwx: nothing. it's the ancestral hall of the jiang clan
he says this softly, like it hurts to acknowledge it or smth
lwj: do you want to enter?
wwx: no
WHICH IS A BLATANT LIE
EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM IS SCREAMING HOW MUCH HE WANTS TO GO IN THERE
they make to turn away and pause for a moment, during which wwx looks back at the shrine longingly
cut to the next scene where we see wwx burning some incense sticks in the shrine
AND OUR BOYS BOW TOGETHER 3x TO M-YU, JFM, AND JYL
wwx greets his deceased loved ones solemnly
wwx: it's me. i'm here to disturb you again.
idk about m-yu and jfm, BUT JYL WOULD NEVER THINK WWX'S PRESENCE WAS A DISTURBANCE
now wwx is telling lwj about how he used to spend a ton of time in that shrine bc m-yu would punish him by sending him there to, idk, reflect on his sins before the ancestors or smth
and lwj is like, yeah, i heard about that
then wwx comments on how he's never met a woman as irritable as m-yu, and how she punished him for trifles all the time
then he laughs bashfully and says "my fault, my fault" and bows another 3x bc omg wwx you can't speak ill of the dead, especially not at their shrine
this is a nice moment between them so far, actually.
it's nice to hear wwx reminisce in a way that's not 100% painful
and the fact that he's sharing these little bits of inconsequential info with lwj, his soulmate, is just very sweet to me
lwj: won't you tell jc?
wwx: idk. at least not yet
lwj: after all, you two are sworn brothers
it's nice of lwj to acknowledge that, without any sort of rancor in his tone, considering how much he does not care for jc (to put it mildly)
wwx: since the misunderstanding between us is so deep, it's not that easy to solve
HE SOUNDS SO RESIGNED, AND THE LITTLE SMILE THAT FLASHED BRIEFLY THERE WAS JUST SO SAD
and then he's like, besides, I created Plot Device 2, regardless of whether or not jgy ended up using it to make Plot Device 3
UH OH, HERE COMES JC
jc: wei wuxian
OH GOD, CAN HE PACK ANY MORE BITTERNESS AND VENOM INTO THAT NAME??
wwx stands immediately when he hears jc call, he doesn't look at him tho
lwj stands a beat after as jc enters the shrine
jc: you still take yourself as one of the jiang clan? come and go at any time you like, then bring people here when you wish. Do you remember whose house this is? who's the owner?
YIKES
THAT ONE HURT.
and wwx just takes it
wwx: i didnt take hanguang jun to any confidential places in Lotus Pier. i just brought him here to offer some incense to clan leader jiang and madam yu.
he's so submissive here and not even in a fun way
it’s in his posture and tone of voice, even in how he still doesn't look directly at jc...it makes me sad
wwx: we're leaving
He tries to retreat bc he def doesn't want this this confrontation to happen
jc: you really should kneel down to them, for coming to their presence to destroy the view and ruin their quiet.
DOUBLE YIKES.
that one hurt EVEN MORE
and lwj, who had been following wwx's lead and staying quiet, intervenes
lwj: clan leader jiang, pay attention to your words
oh boy if looks could kill, jc would be dead as a doornail
he's like HURT MY SOULMATE AGAIN, I DARE YOU. JUST GIVE ME A REASON AND I WILL STRIKE YOU DOWN
which is pretty gutsy since jc is higher ranked than him, technically, as clan leader.
AND they're both in jc's domain rn!
jc: what did you say? i think someone else needs to watch his behavior
he's glaring at wwx's back and he's got a mean twist to his mouth that would be a smile if it weren't so cruel
jc: you have already been kicked out of our family. how dare you enter and face my parents and my sister?
STOP HURTING MY SUNSHINE BOY
wwx is just accepting this. he's just accepting all these cruel things with his eyes downcast and submissive
BC IT HURTS AND HE BELIEVES HE DESERVES IT
lwj: jiang wanyin
HOLY SHIT
lwj fucking HISSED that name
and he took a VERY MENACING step towards jc
MY GUY
MY GUY, YOU CAN'T ATTACK A CLAN LEADER
ESPECIALLY NOT IN HIS OWN HOME
LIKE, I TOTALLY GET WHY YOU'D WANT TO RN, AND, Y'KNOW, I'M NOT THE MOST POLITICALLY SAVVY PERSON AROUND
BUT THIS JUST SEEMS LIKE A BAD IDEA ALL AROUND
thank god wwx is there
wwx stops him, pressing the palm of his hand into lwj's torso (!!!!!)
wwx: lan zhan. lan zhan, let's go
he practically whispers this, head bent down, AGAIN SUPER SUBSERVIENT
but jc is looking for a fight and he's not letting go until he gets one, apparently
jc: go as far as you can. i don't want to see you AWFUL PEOPLE again before my dead family
wwx just halts in his steps.
he had been all prepared to go after taking that tongue lashing that he thinks he's earned, but at that he takes a deep, fortifying breath bc jc crossed a line
he purses his lips a moment before turning to finally face jc head on
wwx: jc, scold me as you like but not the others (aka LWJ)
oooh, but that was the wrong thing to say to jc right now bc jc goes off on a VERY PAINFUL rant
he's like, oh, i should be nice to lwj? don't you remember that MY PARENTS WERE KILLED AND LOTUS PIER FELL bc you just HAD to play hero and save lwj?? and it wasn't enough! you HAD to play hero and SAVE THE WENS too, which killed my sister!!
oh he's getting really mean here
he's like, how generous you are wwx! letting wn wander the entrance of lotus pier and letting lwj offer incense!!
the minute jc started his rant, wwx cast his eyes to the side, again just enduring everything jc is throwing at him
oh but now jc starts in on lwj again
he's like, lwj, the great second jade, ignoring his reputation to side with wwx, your brother and uncle must be so proud
wwx: JIANG WANYIN!
wwx shouts at him
he's shaky and almost panting here.
wwx: apologize this instant.
jc: apologize? why should i? bc i insulted your great friendship?
THIS WHOLE ENCOUNTER IS A SHIT SHOW AND IT HURTS.
wwx just loses it here and grabs jc by the collar of his robes and gives him a shake
wwx: ARE YOU DONE?
and jc is still the little brother, you know, so obvs he does not back down here, he's not intimidated at all
jc: LET'S FIGHT THEN. should i be afraid of you two?
wwx's breath is all shaky and he's trembling and he would've given into jc's demands for a fight anyway but then he sees jyl's nameplate
and he must remember how upset jyl would get every time they fought
ME TOO, JYL, ME TOO. I HATE THIS, I HATE THIS, MAKE IT STOP
so he lets go of jc and stumbles back. he's looking very weak right now AND I’M VERY CONCERNED
lwj, obvs, catches him by the arm when he stumbles
lwj: wei ying
wwx: lan zhan, let's go
lwj agrees and the two of them turn and leave the shrine, lwj still gripping wwx's arm and providing support bc wwx is NOT looking good what’s happening to my sunshine boy, somebody fix this RIGHT NOW
BUT JC IS LIKE A DOG WITH A BONE BC HE JUST STORMS AFTER THEM, HE WANTS HIS FIGHT
he freaking leaps across the little lotus pond and lands before them, blocking off their exit
he starts antagonizing wwx, and he grabs wwx by the collar now, and again, wwx just takes it BUT LWJ DOESN'T
lwj slams his hand around jc's wrist (the one that's grabbing wwx), WRAPPING HIS FINGERS AROUND JC'S ZIDIAN, EVEN
lwj: let him go
holy crap. Stone Cold. LWJ'S STARE IS STONE COLD, AND HE TIGHTENS HIS GRIP ON JC'S WRIST
god damn, if lwj ever looked at me like that, i'd drop to the ground and beg for forgiveness. i'd be scared witless
when jc makes no move to let go of wwx, lwj releases his wrist and hooks his arm under jc's forearm and shoves upward to FINALLY break jc's hold on wwx
wwx stumbles at the force of it and his nose starts to bleed
MY POOR PRECIOUS SUNSHINE BOY LOOKS SO WEAK AND OUT OF IT!!
lwj looks at him, eyes wide with worry
lwj: wei ying!
even jc looks concerned (i would even say scared, tbh)
wwx reaches up and wipes his nose; he's not steady on his feet AT ALL
wwx: lan zhan, let's go.
lwj: okay
and he immediately starts to leave, practically dragging wwx with him bc wwx is barely able to stand at this point
lol, lwj shoulder checks jc as they walk past him
but jc is a stubborn bastard and brings out zidian and whips at their retreating backs
brief moment here to admire how FREAKING COOL THE ZIDIAN IS OMG,
*GRABBY HANDS* I WANT ONE OF MY OWN SO SO BAD.
IT'S A SNAKE BRACELET!!
THAT TURNS INTO A WHIP!!
A PURPLE WHIP!!! OF LIGHTNING!!!!!!
LITERALLY NO ASPECT OF THIS WEAPON IS UN-BADASS
so jc whips purple lightning at them but the hit never lands bc lwj swings his still-sheathed bichen and bats that attack away like nothing
but as he does that, wwx starts to fall
lwj spins around and AUDIBLY GASPS, eyes wide with worry again, as he watches wwx lose consciousness.
he dives forward and catches his soulmate in his arms and cradles him gently
jc doesn't see this happen and swings right back with another lash but wn swoops in out of nowhere to take the hit instead.
AND HERE WE'RE GONNA GET THE BIG REVEAL OH GOD I'M NOT READY
jc is all who let you in, how dare you?? and whips wn again
BUT WN WILL NOT STAY DOWN, NO SIR
HE'S GOT STUFF TO SAY AND BY GOD, HE'S GONNA SAY IT
he offers up suibian to jc but jc whips him and sends him flying again
Wn gets right back up goes back to offering the sword to jc, DEMANDING HE UNSHEATHE IT
AND IN A FIT OF FURY JC PULLS AT THE HANDLE AND SUIBIAN COMES FREE
SHOCK, UTTER SHOCK ON HIS AND LWJ'S FACES
(also YIKES jc nearly sliced out wn's eyes with the force of his unsheathing of siubian. he obvs didn't expect anything to come of him pulling at the handle)
GOLDEN CORE TRANSFER REVEAL!!
FLASHBACK to wn's part of the story
we see wn holding an unconscious jc and wq is telling wwx to come out from where he was hiding behind a convenient boulder
and we see wwx give the go ahead to start the golden core transfer
back to the present, jc looks like his whole world is a lie
bc it kinda is
I'm still kinda mad that wwx never told him anything.
like, i get why he didn't and i sympathize but informed consent in medicine and surgery is kind of a big deal!
and then omg, we got a close up shot of lwj's face
his eyes are wide and shiny and his jaw is dropped open just a bit. HE IS SHAKEN TO THE CORE
HAHAHA GET IT? THAT THING WWX DOESN’T HAVE ANYMORE?? Oh god i’m sorry that was AWFUL
he turns his gaze back to wwx, who is still resting gently in crook of his arm
i love the camera angle here btw
the scene is at a slant, with the white of bichen's handle, and the white of the flowering tree behind them filling all of the right side of the screen
it makes the dark bundle of wwx and the dark flow of lwj's hair more stark
the slant of it really emphasizes how the whole of lwj's attention is on the man in his arms
And how his whole world is off its axis at this revelation
god lwj is really just letting his whole heart pour out of his eyes as he watches wwx
jc and wn are arguing loudly in the background but lwj makes NO INDICATION of hearing ANY of it
now we get to watch the emotional confrontation between jc and wn
lwj finally looks back at them when wn starts reciting details that no one outside of jc would have known unless they were there themselves
another flashback as wn describes everything in excruciating detail
oh this line gets me every time
wn: the reason you thought it was repaired was because of my sister, the best doctor in the wen clan of qishan, Wen Qing
WN LOVES HIS SISTER SO MUCH. HE WAS SO PROUD OF HER
AND HE LOST HER. HE DOESN'T HAVE HER ANYMORE
GOD DAMN IT, SHOW, LET THESE BOYS KEEP THEIR SISTERS
and now we go back to lwj, gazing soulfully at wwx and a single tear rolls down his cheek as it really hits him what exactly wwx did, what wwx gave up
wn is going off on jc, like, didn't he ever wonder why wwx never picked up the sword again?
wn looks hardcore here tbh.
we cut back to lwj, who is now holding bichen tightly, and boy, he's got his jaw clenched so hard.
at least until he looks back down at wwx, and his mouth softens as more tears drip down his face
flashback to when jc first found wwx after the burial mounds, and a series of flashbacks of every time jc brought up wwx's lack of suibian and wwx brushing off his questions
THEY SHOULD'VE JUST TALKED IT OUT, MY GOD, THEY COULD’VE SPARED ME ALL THIS PAIN IF THEY JUST TALKED
another flashback to that time that jc pushed wwx and wwx fell hard to the ground and jc thought he was just drunk
I AM DONE WITH THESE FLASHBACKS, THX. CAN WE NOT, ANYMORE? IT'S HURTING TOO MUCH
and we also keep getting shots of lwj's face, STREAKED WITH TEARS
HE'S GOT A TEARDROP ON THE TIP OF HIS NOSE
ALL OF THIS IS PAINFUL
PLEASE STOP
oooh, lwj's mouth twists into a firm scowl and he slams bichen on the ground with a loud CLANG
this is too much for him too! he's furious, he's had enough of hearing how wwx suffered for jc
so he scoops up wwx, carrying almost all of his weight, as he walks the both of them outta there
wn leaves suibian with jc and tells him to have anyone else try to unsheathe it if he doesn't believe him
jc doesn't want it. he doesn't want it at all.
he desperately wants it to be untrue
AND I CRY A RIVER FOR MY YUNMENG BROS
WE'RE ON A BOAT NOW
UNCONSCIOUS WWX SPREAD BACK, HELD LOVINGLY IN LWJ'S ARMS
Now we get some lwj & wn bonding time where they discuss a-yuan! (after lwj promises not to tattle on wn to wwx)
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!! WE'RE GETTING A FLASHBACK FROM LWJ
LWJ IS ENTERING WWX'S LAB CAVE THING, ALONE, FRANTICALLY SEARCHING FOR WWX
lwj: on that day, when the wen clan were captured and killed, i went to the burial mounds to seek wei ying but discovered a-yuan instead
we see him find a-yuan, who is unconscious and clammy.
lwj immediately drops to his knees beside him and checks his wrist, then presses the back of his hand to a-yuan's forehead
oh, lwj's hand is all roughened with dirt. That’s very striking, for some reason.
he purses his lips making a split-second decision, and scoops a-yuan up
lwj: he was hiding there for so long that he had a fever and was severely ill
wn figures out that the fever is probs why lsz doesn't remember anything, and hasn’t mentioned wn at all. lwj looks surprised
lwj: didn't you tell him?
wn: about his birth origin? he's happy now. knowing too much about the past and remembering something heavy, would make him less happy than now
HE'S SUCH A GOOD PERSON
WHY DO THE BEST OF THEM HAVE TO SUFFER SO?
lwj: sooner or later, he will know
and wn doesn't deny it. he's like, yeah, sooner or later. just like master wei and jc with the golden core transfer.
at this lwj looks back down at wwx
lwj: is it painful?
the way lwj's throat bobs before he asks tho.
like he's forcing himself to ask, bc he needs to know even if he already suspects the answer.
He needs to know even tho knowing will hurt. he's steeling himself against the pain already.
wn: what?
lwj: taking out the core, is it painful?
wn: you won't believe me if i say it's not, right?
lwj: i thought wq might have some method
he sounds desperate, hoping against all odds that it didn't hurt wwx as much as he suspects it did
and here wn explains that wq wanted to ease the process, make it less painful, but due to the nature of the procedure, she couldn't use any anesthetics
wn: the one who donates the core has to be awake the whole time
THE WHOLE DAMN TIME
HE HAS TO BE CONSCIOUS TO WATCH IT GET CUT OUT OF HIM AND EXPERIENCE THAT CONNECTION SLOWLY BE SEVERED OTHERWISE IT DOESN'T WORK
HOW MESSED UP IS THAT OMG, HOW MUCH TRAUMA MUST THEY PUT MY POOR SUNSHINE BOY THROUGH
lwj: awake?
HE SOUNDS HOARSE AS HE SAYS THAT
wn: two nights and one day. he has to be awake
MY SUNSHINE BOY, MY BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE BOY SUFFERED SO MUCH
lwj's lips purse briefly. he's staring at his wei ying
lwj: at the time, what were the chances
wn: fifty percent
lwj looks at wn here with horrified disbelief
lwj: fifty percent?
wn proceeds to explain how wq didn't want to do it but wwx kept insisting that the odds were worth
AND OH MY GOD LWJ FLASHES BACK TO THEIR FIRST CONFRONTATION AFTER THE BURIAL MOUNDS, WHEN THEY FINALLY FOUND WWX AFTER 3 MONTHS OF SEARCHING
IT HURTS JUST AS MUCH AS THE FIRST TIME AROUND
Wwx must have some sort of sixth sense for knowing when Emotional Discussions are Done, bc he regains consciousness only AFTER wn & lwj finish bonding lol
he sits up, head aching, and pulls himself from lwj's embrace
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY, BC LWJ OBVS DIDN'T MIND HAVING HIM THAT CLOSE
IN FACT even as he helps wwx sit up, you can see his hand trail up wwx's arm, grip loosening and tightening sporadically
He's def trying to prolong contact here, very reluctant to let go of his wei ying
wwx: lan zhan, how did we get out?
lwj: we had a fight
AND ~THEIR SONG~ STARTS PLAYING
wwx: i knew that jiang cheng wouldn't let me go that easily. so unreasonable.
and then he looks at lwj and hurries to assure him that jc didn't mean all those cutting remarks. that that's just how he gets when he's upset.
lwj looks off to the side, pressing his lips closed bc he couldn't care less about jc or jc's words. THEY MEAN NOTHING TO HIM
wwx covers lwj's hand with his own and very earnestly says: so don't take it seriously
BC HE HASN'T YET REALIZED THAT LWJ DOESN'T ACTUALLY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT JC'S ENTIRE EXISTENCE
lwj doesn't look him in the eye as he's told this, and his lips are still pressed together in a firm line.
he probably doesn't actually want wwx to realize just how little jc means to him.
wwx notices they're on a boat on a lake now lol
wwx: i often played here with jyl when we were children
AND HERE HE HALLUCINATES HIS PRECIOUS BEAUTIFUL KIND AMAZING SISTER JYL
Jyl: a-xian come have some lotus seeds
WWX'S EYES REDDEN WITH TEARS AND HE CALLS OUT FOR HIS SISTER
AND I'M FIGHTING BACK SOBS
WHILE JYL'S SWEET GENTLE MUSIC PLAYS AND JYL SMILES WARMLY AT HER LITTLE BROTHER
wn snaps wwx out of it
ONLY FOR WWX TO FLASHBACK TO JYL CRYING AND SAYING THAT THEY'RE THE CLOSEST THREE IN THE WORLD
WWX LEANS HIS HEAD ON HER KNEE AND SULKS ADORABLY ABOUT HOW HE'S HUNGRY
AND I WANNA DIE FROM ALL THE FEELINGS I'M HAVING
back on the boat, wwx eyes are still filled with tears and it's awful
wn is all, wwx what's wrong? and wwx shakes it off and just says he's hungry
so he yanks out some lotus pods from the lake and gives one to lwj and one to wn and one for himself
HE'S SMILING NOW, THANK GOD
wwx: it's perfect timing to be here now!
and he's happily tearing into the pod
I LOVE SEEING HIM HAPPY AND SMILING
SUCH LITTLE JOYS AND HE REVELS IN IT
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH
HE SHOULD ALWAYS BE HAPPY AND SMILING.
NOTHING SHOULD EVER BE ALLOWED TO MAKE HIM SAD. NOTHING
lwj: wei ying
wwx: what
lwj: does this lake belong to someone?
LOL, HE GAVE THE POD A SUSPICIOUS LOOK BEFORE ASKING THAT AND HAS NOT TRIED GETTING ANY SEEDS OUT YET
wwx: of course not
HE SAYS IN A COMPLETELY NOT BELIEVABLE WAY
YOU CAN TELL BY HOW HE DOESN'T LOOK LWJ IN THE EYE AS HE RESPONDED AND KEEPS MUNCHING AWAY ON THE SEEDS AS A DISTRACTION
Lwj is watching like, yeah, i’m not buying it.
lwj: i heard that lakes here all have owners.
lolol wwx pauses in his chewing for a second and looks around guiltily for a bit before letting out a nervous laugh
wwx: hanguang jun, you really hear much, don't you? i didn't even know that.
he's looking at him all innocently and LWJ LOOKS BACK STILL NOT BUYING IT LOLOLOL
wwx looks away and then looks back, relenting
wwx: fine.
HE'S ALL POUTY, IT'S ADORABLE, I LOVE HIM
he sulkily tells wn to get them moving
and sulkily tosses his lotus pod at the bottom of the boat
HE'S JUST HAVING A SULK-FEST RN AND IT'S SUPER CUTE, I'M ENJOYING IT A LOT
wn starts to get the paddles to get the boat going, when lwj suddenly leans over the side of the boat and snaps up a lotus pod
he very seriously offers it to his wei ying, who is watching him wide-eyed and surprised
lwj: only for today
bc i just found out about your traumatic golden core transfer for your awful ungrateful little brother and i feel horrible that you suffered alone, he doesn’t say
bc i wish i could have done something to help but i couldn't so now i'm gonna steal you a lotus pod bc that's literally all i can do right now, he also doesn’t say
LOL
THE WAY THE CAMERA CUTS TO WN HERE CRACKS ME UP
WN IS JUST PASSIVELY MUNCHING ON A SEED AND WATCHING THAT EXCHANGE HAPPEN WITH HIS BIG BROWN EYES TAKING IT IN, WITH A VAGUE, "HUH, THAT'S INTERESTING" MANNER
wwx looks at the pod and then back at lwj before taking the pod with a nervous laugh
I am convinced that he had WAR-FLASHBACKS to that time drunk!lwj gave him roosters
He’s probably frantically trying to remember if lwj drank ANY alcohol earlier
TRYING TO CALCULATE THE CHANCES OF SOMEONE SLIPPING SOME ALCOHOL TO LWJ BETWEEN THEIR FIGHT WITH JC TO THIS BOAT ESCAPE LOLOLOLOL
he clutches that pod with both hands and gives lwj a pained smile
The exact pained smile he had when he accepted the roosters that time
LMAO WWX TURNS TO LOOK AT WN, HIS BROWS ALL FURROWED IN CONFUSION LIKE, WN WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING, EXPLAIN WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
but wn just smiles cheerfully at him
cut to the next moment where we see the boat's floor is now littered with a bunch of lotus pods and wwx is happily munching on seeds, all smiley
BUT OF COURSE I'M NOT ALLOWED TO ENJOY HAPPY PEACEFUL MOMENTS EVER
SO A GLOWY GLITTERY MESSENGER BUTTERFLY APPEARS AND LANDS ON LWJ'S OUTSTRETCHED PALM
I mean, wwx giggled happily there for a moment there!!!!! WHY CAN'T THEY LET ME BASK IN THAT FOR ONE MINUTE, GOD.
anyway, the butterfly
wwx: the paper butterfly messenger from the jin clan?
(side note to say that the butterfly messenger is actually very pretty. i like it a lot)
wwx pats lwj on the knee after the butterfly flies away
wwx: what happened? what did it say?
Lwj’s like, jgy is in yunmeng now and my brother hasn’t responded to my message...
wwx: you worry jgy would harm him when desperate?
bc wwx can tell right away when lwj is worried. BC THEY'RE SOULMATES AND THEY KNOW EACH OTHER SO WELL
And then bc my sunshine boy is a GENIUS, he remembers the deed jgy had hidden away in the secret chamber, for Yunping City in Yunmeng
he excitedly tells lwj that this is where jgy will be
lol he was so excited he tipped himself over a bit and jostled the boat so lwj had to reach out to steady him
we cut to the next scene we see people dying fabrics and our boys wander through
Wwx confirms with some random worker lady that they’re in the right place and tells lwj they should explore the city as a date for Plot Investigation Reasons
lwj nods in agreement and then wwx turns back to look at the lady and gives her THE SWEETEST SMILE, THE ONE THAT SQUINCHES HIS EYES CLOSED AND MAKES ME SWOON
BUT LOL LWJ SEES HIM SMILE AT THE LADY LIKE THAT AND IT NOT AMUSED BY IT AT ALL
oh god, just the way his eyes flick from wwx to the lady and how his lips firm up before he stalks off in a snit cracks me up
GREEN IS NOT YOUR COLOR, LAN ZHAN, I'M JUST SAYING
LET THE GUY SMILE AT ME, I MEAN AT PEOPLE. IT'S NOT A CRIME
wwx is confused by the reaction but hurries off after him
oh wwx, you dense idiot. you're lucky i love you so
now we see come random guys bully wn for no reason 😞
wwx tells them to back off but they don't listen and lwj very nonchalantly pulls out a talisman from his sleeve and offers it to wwx
wwx looks at the talisman and then back at lwj with SUCH A PLEASED SMILE
OMG I WOULD DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING FOR HIM TO SMILE AT ME LIKE THAT
wwx: lan zhan, you even kept it until now?
AHHHHHH SO CUTE, I LOVE HIM
lwj doesn't respond but it doesn’t matter bc wwx does that squinchy-eyed smile AGAIN AND I DIE, I DIE
wwx activates the talisman which releases a whole bunch of glittery butterflies that distract the guys and allow wn to escape.
omg guys, this is the same trick lwj used to distract wen chao and wen zhuliu to escape ages and ages ago WHICH MEANS LWJ HAS BEEN CARRYING A PIECE OF WWX WITH HIM ALL THESE YEARS AHHHHHHHHH
And after that wonderful, touching revelation, the episode ends.
SO, we had lots of depressing Yunmeng Bros Feelings that made me wanna die
BUT we also at the end here get rewarded with MULTIPLE squinchy-eyed smiles from my most precious darling sunshine boy that made me wanna die but, like, in a good way
I WOULD ENDURE SO MUCH MORE FOR THOSE SMILE, NGL

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 09 second part
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Blather)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Wen Chao’s Weird Bird, Redux
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji walk away after killing the dire bird, and then Wen Chao, who was standing like 2 feet away, comes to collect its resentful little corpse. He totally heard Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji talking about him.
Wen Memorial
Now we visit the Wen memorial, which Wei Wuxian 2.0 won’t remember when he sees it again. Everyone who isn’t a Wen is confused and awkward while the Wens have an impromptu family conference. Agenda: 1. weeping 2. apologizing to ancestors for involuntarily being turned into temporary zombies. 3. getting the fuck out of dodge before it happens again
This is a burial place, and the non-Wen cultivators are deferential and tentative where before they were bossy. Wei Wuxian’s affect is particularly different from his normal swagger and decisiveness.
Look how gently he asks Wen Qing about this place, thinking carefully and making his expression conciliatory before he opens his mouth to speak.
(more after the cut)
The others react to this revelation by becoming even more awkward and uncomfortable...
But Wei Wuxian responds with shock and sympathy, once again showing why he makes friends wherever he goes, and why he is so vulnerable despite his many strengths. There is no “not my problem” setting in Wei Wuxian’s heart.
It occurs to me, in watching his reaction, that Wei Wuxian doesn’t have a single living blood relation, as far as he or we know, and at this point he has never met a single member of his own clan. Yes yes, he has an adoptive family, and that’s lovely; I’m an adoptive parent myself. But genetic family is also super important, particularly in the ancestor-revering culture we see depicted in The Untamed.
In any case, this moment of standing before the grave of Wen Qing’s people, with these few remaining members of her family--people who he will later get to know so well--seems to resonate with him.
Baby Wen
The scene at the shrine includes our first look at random cute kid massively important character Wen Yuan.
Let’s pretend Wen Yuan is a different age from however old he will be at the end of the Sunshot campaign, since the actor did not magically change ages. Here the character is probably two years old.
Rich Gege Lan Wangji in this scene is wearing the same gorgeous blue color he will be wearing years later when Wen Yuan grabs him and won’t let go. Maybe A-Yuan’s pre-fever memory was super good, and he remembered that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian belonged together.
Chicken Hunting
Wei Wuxian seems to be all in on this chicken hunt, making sure Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang join him, but then he circles back to talk privately with Wen Qing and Lan Wangji. This was a ruse to distract Jiang Cheng.
Wei Wuxian is very good at manipulating Jiang Cheng and he does it frequently. He takes this ability way, way, way too far when he concocts the whole golden-core plan, which I’ll get into in the relevant episode. But this sibling dynamic is not great in either direction.
Incidentally, nobody asks about the giant chain mark on Wei Wuxian’s throat after he and Lan Wangji come back from their time in the woods together. What kind of rep does he have, exactly?
Having cornered Wen Qing, Wei Wuxian starts to question her seriously, but can’t resist an opportunity to flirt with Lan Wangji like an embarrassing dumbass.
Lan Wangji’s communication skills continue to improve, as he angrily tells Wei Wuxian "bì zuǐ! “ instead of storming off or shanking him with Bichen. [Chinese vocab OP has learned from watching CDramas: bì zuǐ (shut up), duì bù qǐ (sorry), nú cái zuì gāi wàn sǐ (your servant deserves to die for her offense)]
Wei Wuxian makes a visible effort to drag himself back over the line into propriety.
While Wei Wuxian apologizes to Lan Wangji with his eyes, Wen Qing wonders what she ever did to deserve being stuck in the middle of this crap.
Eventually the boys get the whole Wen backstory, and Wen Qing hits the road.
In what will become a repeating motif, Jiang Cheng asks Wen Qing to forget her family, abandon her clan, and bail on her little brother.
What the fuck, dude. You wouldn’t do that to Wei Wuxian and he’s your shige, not your didi. You are on this very road trip out of a sense of concern for him. As a female orphan who is the elder to her male sibling, Wen Qing’s obligation to Wen Ning is enormous even if she didn’t love him to bits. Not to mention she seems to be the clan leader for the Dafan Mountain Wens at this point. Jiang Cheng should understand her, but doesn’t.
Club Ruohan
God I’m boring
At some point in the episode we stop by Club Ruohan. Yawn. WRH tells Wen Chao he’s a dumbass for targeting Wen Qing’s people, and to get back to his fucking project already. Wen Chao talks about wanting to get “Wei Wuxian” and his homies - he doesn’t namecheck Lan Wangji, the ringbearer Yin Iron having person. Just bird-killer Wei Wuxian. That doesn’t bode well for Lotus Pier.
Wen Ruohan is actually fairly reasonable, for a power-hungry megalomaniac who’s busily corrupting himself with dark energies. Most of the atrocities in the “fuck all of the other clans” campaign were Wen Chao’s idea.
Downtown
The gang goes to Qiting and Lan Wangji gets ready to go doorknocking to find out where the next hunk of Iron is. Wei Wuxian stops him and says that his plan is stupid and it sucks.
In a truly amazing display of his developing trust in Wei Wuxian, socially awkward Lan Wangji asks WWX for advice on how to proceed.
Wei Wuxian’s answer is to go drinking. But...he’s not wrong. And he explains his reasoning to Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji before the grabbing and dragging part. Lan Wangji seems to be getting used to that part.
In fact Lan Wangji has already become a lot more comfortable with Wei Wuxian’s extroversion and high spirits than Jiang Cheng is, even though Jiang Cheng isn’t nearly as introverted as Lan Wangji. That’s love for ya.
Tavern Talk
Wei Wuxian slaps a heap of coins down on the table and proceeds to extravagantly order...three jugs of wine. That seems pretty moderate, but they all react like he’s a big spender.
Wei Wuxian: No worries, Rich Gege's got me covered
Wangxian’s old-married-couple dynamic appears on the scene fully formed, as Wei Wuxian slowly undresses a bottle of wine and Lan Wangji tells him to stop dawdling.
Chatting with the guy at the Inn works exactly as well as Wei Wuxian said it would, as he tells them about creepy doings at the old Chang place.
Lan Wangji’s bag of holding, which was definitely not tucked into his perfectly smooth chest placket a second ago....
bursts forth like the xenomorph in Alien, startling everyone and causing Lan Wangji a lot of pain and brow furrowing.
Wei Wuxian leaps over and puts a steadying hand on his shoulder, and tells him to relax and concentrate, in a bit of a role reversal from earlier. Lan Wangji doesn’t shake him off.
Once the Yin Iron settles down again, they dash off to investigate the creepy doings, leaving Nie Huaisang behind to meet up with Meng Yao. I’m sure everyone will be glad some day that they created an opportunity for Meng Yao to join them and the new enemy they are about to capture.
Cheng Compound
At the Cheng compound, the door is shut and there are creepy noises. Time for a talisman!
It’s sweet how when anything fucked-up and necromantic happens, these guys immediately look to Wei Wuxian for the right way to deal with it.
The outfits here form a nice a nice contrast, with the two clan lineal descendants dressed in near-matching blue with silver crowns, while Wei Wuxian has changed out of his blue and red robes and into his future signature black. The leather hair band is as fancy as he gets - he wears his outsider status pretty proudly, even at this early age.
The boys open the doors on a scene so grotesque, even gravity has become meaningless.
Lan Wangji: This is horrifying, so extremely untidy
Jiang Cheng: Do I know any of these people? No? Ok, this is fine then
Wei Wuxian: I wonder if I could kill this many people all by myself. That would be epic.
